When I began my work as thel
horticultural agent here in Okee-
chobee, I was amazed to find
that there were no local groups
dedicated to the greener pursuits
of life. Rumors persisted that
there once was a Garden Club in
town, but I've not found out
much about this organization,
what they did, or why they are
not around anymore.
It's been one of my goals to
help local plant lovers get
together and enjoy the pleas-
ures of plants. Thanks to a
recent visit by a nurseryman that
has been transplanted from Stu
art, Okeechobee may soon
break this drought and get an
orchid group started.
Our office has agreed to host
the initial meeting of folks inter-
ested in learning all about
orchids this Tuesday night, Jan.
23, at 7 p.m., here in our office.
The program will be led by Mr.
Harry Hoffner, past president of
the Martin Orchid Society, and
now a commercial orchid grow

er here in town.
Why Orchids?
Orchids are exotic symbols
of tropical allure, and are
thought to have an incredible
amount of beauty -and mystery
that surrounds them. Those
with green thumbs will either
love them., or not, based on their
ability to provide the necessary
growing conditions that can
allow them to produce their
enchanting floral displays.
These plants display an
unlimited range of colors and
forms, from the flamboyant
Cattleya that is popular in cor-
sages, to native Butterfly
orchids found in local ham-
mocks. Gardeners may enjoy
growing many orchid species
and hybrids. Many of these
pllnis growv well and flower
profusely wilh a miniium of

care under Florida's conditions.
Contrary to common belief,
these plants may be purchased at
prices comparable to other flow-
ering pot plants. When a few
basic cultural requirements are
met, any orchid will satisfy the
owner for many years.
And for those interested in
another kind of green, please
note that there is a thriving com-
mercial orchid industry in Flori-
da. Statewide production has
risen steadily, with over 6.5 mil-
lion plants being sold in 2004.
Which Orchids
to Grow
One of the more difficult
decisions facing new orchid
fanciers is which of the thou-
sands of commercially avail-
able species and hybrids
should they grow. To answer
this question several factors
must be considered, includ-
ing: (1) How much time do
you want to spend? (2) How
much money is available? (3)

Continued From Page 1
Do you have a hobby green-
house? and (4) Do you have a
suitable growing area?
Species and hybrids of six
orchid types are widely recom-
mended to homeowners because
of their adaptability, ease of grow-
ing, and beautiful flowers: Cattleya,
Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, Oncid-
ium, Vanda and Epidendrum.
These are the most common and
can be grown successfully in Flori-
da, but they represent only a minor-
ity of orchid genera available.

Basic Orchid
Growing Tips
Florida gardeners have a num-
ber of choices on how their
orchids should be grown. Tradi-

tionally, plants were grown in
osmunda fiber in clay pots. Other
media such as chopped tree fern
fiber, certain bark materials,
porous volcanic stone, peat, char-
coal and combinations of these
materials are now used. Plastic
pots and other containers have
replaced clay in many cases.
Repotting is perhaps the least
enjoyed chore in the orchid
hobby. As a general rule, popular
orchids need to be repotted every
two to three years. Repotting can
be done by transplanting to a larg-
er pot, or by division. Knowing
when and how to repot will be
shown at future meetings of this
orchid group.
Fertilization is a controversial
issue among orchid growers. Many
debate the merits of inorganic and
organic fertilizers and some even
question the need for fertilizer.
However, most growers use fertiliz-
er and obtain excellent results.

Rates and kinds of fertilizers
depend on the kind of plant and
type of growing media used.
How often should orchids be
watered? This is a common ques-
tion to which there is no one set
answer. As a general rule, orchids
in small pots dry more rapidly and
require watering more frequently.
Plants grown in porous clay pots
should receive water more often
than those grown in plastic pots.
When watering, saturate each pot
so that moisture drains from the
bottom of the pot then don't
water again until the surface of the
medium becomes dry.
Most orchids require partial
shade for optimum growth and
flowering. High light intensities
degrade chlorophyll causing the
foliage to yellow, and frequently
may burn the leaves. Orchids need
to be protected from cold tempera-
tures. Generally 50 degrees Fahren-
heit is the minimum temperature

that tropical orchids can handle
without cold damage. However, if
orchids are exposed to too much
heat (two hours above 110 degrees
Fahrenheit or 10 minutes above
120 degrees Fahrenheit), the leaves
and flowers will burn.
There's lots to learn and much
more to share with this fascinating
group of plants. I hope to see you
Tuesday night here at our office to
help explore the wide world of
orchids.
I've placed more information

In a remote section of Italy, there
was a small village that was known for
its prized possession, an active and ele-
gant aqueduct which wound its way
down the mountainside. For centuries,
it had stood and served...carrying water
from the pure mountain pools to the lit-
tle village below.
Modernization came to the village.
A modem water system was installed,
and the old aqueduct was no longer
needed to bring in the precious moun-
tain water.
The townspeople decided to keep their
much-loved aqueduct as a memoiaL.and to
preserve it as a famous landmark
"It has served long...let's cut off its
supply of water, so we may keep it for-
ever." they said.
The water was diverted from its
source, and the aqueduct was given
what they thought to be a long-needed
rest. In a few days, the sides began to
split, and as the moss and the ancient
stones dried in the sun...the wonderful
old aqueduct began to fall apart. In a
very short time, it was almost complete-
ly destroyed. What centuries of service
had failed to do, idleness had accom-
plished in a few short weeks.

Letters to the Editor

Why have we
been lied to?
In the past several months, the
community of Okeechobee has
learned that the ACLU has filed a
lawsuit against the Okeechobee
County School Board because the
school board has taken the posi-
tion of denying the formation of a
Gay-Straight Alliance Club (GSA)
at Okeechobee High School
(OHS).
This position is based upon
school board policy 4.30 2.i.
which states: "A student club or
organization shall not conduct
any activity or act which violates
Florida statutes. Florida statute
1003.46 (2) (a) states as follows:
"...a school shall: (a) teach absti-
nence from sexual activity outside
of marriage as the expected stan-
dard for all school-age students
while teaching the benefits of
monogamous heterosexual mar-
riage."
The school board therefore
promotes abstinence only for our
students and neither promotes
nor condones sexual behavior of
any nature. The school board
approved a contract with Gibbs
Law Firm from St. Petersburg to
represent them in this lawsuit.
Now, as a minister, I could very
easily give you a Biblical under--
standing about what the Bible
says about homosexuality and
also show you that the Scriptures,
in every area where homosexuali-
ty is mentioned, has not one
favorable response to the lifestyle
or behavior that is involved in this
chosen way consciously or
subconsciously to live one's
life, but most all of us already
knows this.
Yes, homosexuality is a
"detestable" sin in the eyes of
God. Those who try to find for-
giveness without repentance of
this sin are only fooling them-
selves and definitely not fooling
God.
A Biblical case is very easy to
make, but unlearned Christians,
lukewarm Christians or non-
Christians may have a very hard
time in seeing what the big deal is
with all of this. I believe that even

a non-Christian can reason with
understanding why having a GSA
meeting at the high school cam-
pus is not a good idea.
There are three main reasons
why it makes good sense to not
allow the GSA to hold meetings or
be recognized on school grounds.
Like all positions that people take,
not everyone will agree with 100
percent certainty but everyone
can understand the reasons why
with 100 percent certainty
whether they agree with them or
not.
There are three reasons that
we can understand why having
GSA meeting on school grounds
should not be allowed: (1) the
school is an abstinence district;
(2) sexual orientation should be
addressed at home or with a
' licensed counselor; (3) and, there
are very questionable motives on
behalf of the ACLU, the media and
the GSA members.
The first and foremost reason-
ing comes from Florida statute
1003.46. Dr. Patricia Cooper,
superintendent of schools,
enforces this Florida statute by
saying, "We are an abstinence-
only district and we do not con-
done or promote any type of sex-
ual activity." Isn't this a great
policy for a school to have? So
why abandon an abstinence only
policy that doesn't promote sexu-
ality. The words, "gay and
straight" in the Gay-Straight
Alliance alone are promoting sex-
uality because it is promoting
awareness of homosexuals and
heterosexuals. This club would
be founded because of students'
sexuality. This alone is in violation
of Florida statute 1003.46, which
means the ACLU is suing the
wrong school board they
should be suing the Florida State
School Board.
Secondly, even though there
are many clubs that meet at the
high school, not one of them is
sexually oriented by description
or agenda and I don't believe a
good parent would want them to
be. If you had a child who was
confused about their sexual ori-
entation would you want them to
go to Yasmin Gonzalez or any

other member of the GSA, or how
about an unqualified sponsor to
figure out a very serious issue in
one's life? That would be a horri-
ble decision for a parent to make
and not one that would show
good wisdom.
Unfortunately, in an issue like
this, kids will sometimes look to
other kids for answers before let-
ting mom or dad know what is
going on with them. We need to
protect our children against the
ability of making a very bad deci-
sion.
Also, if the GSA becomes a rec-
ognized club it could request an
assembly where all kids would
have to attend and listen to their
speaker. Is this something that
you would possibly want your
children exposed to? Sexual ori-
entation should be addressed at
home by parents or with a
licensed counselor and not with
other kids who may be struggling
with the same issues.
Schools are not the place for
students to figure out about their
sexual orientation. It is a place for
learning.
And lastly, there have been
some very questionable motives
on behalf of the ACLU, the media
and the GSA leaders and mem-
bers. When the story broke, the
ACLU and the media have flooded
the news print media and air
waves with a very one-sided argu-
ment that contained untruths.
They have led people to believe
that anti-gay harassment and dis-
crimination are serious problems
at Okeechobee High School.
Amber Sewell, one of the
club's founders has been quoted
in saying: "Straight kids cannot
turn their backs on the plague of
violence and discrimination
against gay and lesbian students."
This is avery serious charge.
I wanted to know the truth
about this charge, so I asked Dr.
Pat Cooper and OHS principal
Toni Wiersma at a meeting that I
had attended if it was true.
"Is there a plague of violence
towards gay students at the high
school?" They said, "No."
So I asked them: "How many
recorded acts of violence during

this school year do you have that
are gay related?" They agreed and
both said "None."
We have been lied to by the
ACLU, some news print media
and GSA members.
Why? Why, have we been lied
to?
I have also learned that some
of the pictures used by the news
print media and TV media had
nothing to do with our high
school, so why the deception? I
believe it is because sometimes
people want things so badly that
they are willing to lie if they have
to about it. Lies that liars tell are
always a pack of lies.
As Christians we need to resist
wrong doings. Anything that tries
to base itself on lies isn't worth
having.
We don't need the ACLU to
dictate school curriculum or what
the school board's positions
should be on the policy for cam-
pus life. Teaching abstinence on
campus is beneficial and fair for
both homosexual and heterosex-
ual students.
Our schools should be focused
on learning that leads to a future
for all students, and not the
understanding of each student's
sexual orientation, because that is
a serious nature in a child's life
that should be for the parents or a
counselor to help work out and
not some group of kids at our
schools who may be struggling
with the same issues.
Pray for our schools and its
leaders as they think, plan and
make decisions for what is best
for all students. And also pray for
their strength and courage to
stand up for an abstinence-only
campus life where learning for all
students is a priority and fair for
all.
And, let us not forget those
who struggle with their sexual ori-
entation. Pray that they will find
the guidance and wisdom from
their parents or a licensed coun-
selor to help them makes sense of
their feelings and desires with
God's help, they can.

Assistant Pastor,
First United Methodist Church

Some newspapers seem to take pleasure in the bad news. Not us.

We do print "bad" news. (It IS newsworthy when things go
wrong, and citizens need to know about problems.)

Still, we give most of our attention to good news the kind you
clip and tape to your refrigerator door. (This isn't difficult. The
vast majority of what happens in our community IS good.)

How are we doing?
