OCSO plans
special operation
The Traffic Unit of the Okee-
chobee County Sheriff's Office
(OCSO) will be conducting
Operation Move Over Jan. 22
through Jan. 27 throughout
Okeechobee County.
The purpose of the opera-
tion is to provide safety while
officers are conducting traffic
stops and to educate the public
on the Move Over Act.
During the period 1996 to
2000, 1,793 working law
enforcement vehicles were hit
while stopped or parked along
Florida highways. As a result of
these incidents, 419 law
enforcement officers were
injured and five were killed.
This operation will also
include enforcement of aggres-
sive driving habits.
RR crossings
will be closed
The CSX Railroad crossing
at N.W. Ninth Ave. will contin-
ue to be closed for improve-
ments until Friday, Jan. 19.

OCSO to crack down on ATVs

Due to a high volume of com-
plaints, the Okeechobee County
Sheriff's Office (OCSO) is going
to start cracking down on the
illegal operation of ATVs in
Okeechobee County.
"It's a problem that's not get-
ting any better," said OCSO
Major Noel Stephen, "and, we're
going to put a stop to it."
According to OCSO Lieu-
tenant Billy Markham, from Nov.


1, 2006, until Wednesday, Jan.
17, the OCSO has received 206
reckless driving complaints. Of
those, 174 were ATV com-
plaints.
Tuesday, Jan. 16, Maj.
Stephen said warnings about
the use of ATVs on city, county
and state roadways and rights-
of-way, as well as underage rid-
ers, "... aren't getting the atten-
tion of the people."
The first step to the height-
ened enforcement he said will
be educating the public. After

that, deputies will begin issuing
citations. And if the operator of
the ATV is under the age of 16,
the citation will be issued to the
,operator's parents.
Also, if the ATV is being oper-
ated on someone else's property


- which is trespassing and
there is damage to that property,
the operator or the parents of
the operator will have to pay for
the damages.
According to Lt. Markham the
minimum fine will be $58.50.
However, there may also be situ-
ations that end up in an arrest.
"Although there may be
instances where a citation will
be issued, the basic premise of
this enforcement is education
and warning," he added.
Maj. Stephen explained that


there is some misconception
surrounding the use of ATVs and
the belief that it is legal to ride
them on roadways and rights-of
way. While the State of Florida
did pass such a law, the state
also made it possible for coun-
ties to 'opt out' and adopt their
own ordinances governing the
use of ATVs, which the Okee-
chobee County Board of County
Commissioners did Oct. 26,
2006.

The alley closing applica-
tion by InSite Development
Group, LLC in the Southern
Trace development in the
northwest section of town was
the hot topic at the city council
meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
The application concerns
five alleys in the northwest sec-
tion of town where they are
planning to develop townhous-
es.
At a previous city council
meeting engineer Steve Dobbs,
from Rudd Jones, P.E and Asso-
ciates and.,who represents
InSite Development Group,
LLC, was told that the major
concerns for the development
were the drainage issues.
While Councilman Lowry
Markham touched on the issue


of density, the main concern
was thought to have been the
drainage issue as the council
instructed Mr. Dobbs to show
them there would still be prop-
er drainage if the alleys were
signed over to the developer.
In response to their request,
Mr. Dobbs presented site plans
for the development that
showed eight retention areas
underground in the area.
These retention areas are tied
to a retention pond by culverts
that channel water to the pond,
of which 75 percent has to be
12-feet deep. The water in the
pond is then connected to the
city limits ditch, which ulti-
mately goes to Taylor Creek.

City planners will face con-
flicting issues concerning a pro-
posed special exception for an
adult entertainment establish-
ment and a residential single
family rezoning request for
neighboring properties.
If the rezoning is granted,
this could pose a violation of dis-
tance requirements in the land
development codes for the adult
entertainment establishment.
The rezoning application is
from property owner William
Mason. The application asks
that the zoning designation be


changed from holding to resi-
dential single family for property
located at the west entrance of
the City Commerce Center.
The property consists of just
over 13 acres that currently have
a future land use of residential
single family, but a zoning of
holding.
Mr. Mason is requesting the
rezoning in order to build a sin-
gle family residence on the
property.
Across the street from this
property at 508 N.E. Ninth St.,
the board will hear from appli-

At their Tuesday, Jan. 16
meeting, the Okeechobee
County School Board recog-
nized the cream of the crop
among their employees.
Sue Horrick, a paraprofes-
sional at New Endeavor High
School, was named Okee-
chobee County School Related
Employee of the Year over 10
other applicants.
The 11 applications, repre-
senting all of the county's
schools and the transportation
department had a total of 89
years experience.
"Mrs. Horrick has a special
talent for getting things done,
and for projecting a positive
image for our school," wrote
New Endeavor Principal Gary
Kirsch in his nomination letter.
"She has a caring concern
for kids that extends beyond her
classroom to the entire school
community."
"It is evident that Mrs. Hor-


rick not only works hard herself,
serving as a model for all para-
professional instruction and
office staff, but also provides
leadership and motivation for
productivity on and around
campus," Mr. Kirsch wrote.
"Ms. Sue understands her
position calls her to work with
special education students, but
her personal calling requires
her to help any student or any
person that is in need, regard-
less of background," wrote
New Endeavor's dean Sean
Downing in his recommenda-
tion letter.
"Ms. Sue's unofficial position
is mother to everyone," he con-
tinued, calling her "the New
Endeavor Sunshine Commit-
tee."
Mrs. Horrick said her attitude
was to "accentuate the positive
and eliminate the negative."
The employee of the year
was selected by a three-person
committee consisting of Mary
Hurley, assistant superintend-
ent, Heather Siler-Dobbs, assis-


tant principal at Osceola Middle
School and India Riedel, school
board member.
All the applicants were
employees of the year at their
school or at the transportation
department.
The other applicants were:

Okeechobee High School; Mary
Morgan, custodian at Okee-
chobee Freshman Campus;

Local detective honored by USNSCC

A detective with the Okee-
chobee County Sheriff's Office
(OCSO) was honored with a
Distinguished Service Ribbon
this week for his work with the
United States Naval Sea Cadet
Corps (USNSCC).
OCSO Detective Lieutenant
M.W. Muros was presented the
ribbon Tuesday, Jan. 16, by
Sheriff Paul May.
Lt. Muros has been in charge
of the local Sea Cadet program
- also known as the Naval Spe-
cial Warfare Trident (NSW-Tri-
dent) Team for the past
seven years. Six times during
that period the local unit has
been named the top unit in the
United States. TWice, the unit
has placed second.


In 2002, Governor Jeb Bush
and the Cabinet recognized the
Okeechobee unit as a world
class youth development activi-
ty and as a nationwide example
for such programs.
In the citation presented to
Lt. Muros this week, Capt. M.D.
Ford (Ret.) wrote: "Your profes-
sionalism, commitment and
devotion to duty reflect great
credit upon yourself and are in
keeping with the highest tradi-
tions of the Naval Sea Cadet
Corps (NSCC) the Navy League
and the United States Navy."
The ribbon was bestowed
upon the OCSO detective for
distinguishing himself during
the 2006 NSCC summer training,
program.
"Volunteering for this ardu-
ous and challenging assign-
ment, you continued your out-


standing support of the NSCC
and filled a critical need in the
summer training program of the
Naval Sea Cadet Corps," wrote
Capt. Ford, the executive direc-
tor of the Naval Sea Cadet
Corps. "This training simply
would not have been accom-
plished without your support
and expertise."
The summer training session
was held in Little Creek, Va.
During summer training,
cadets attend training at military
installations throughout the
eastern United States. Examples
of this training include: recruit
training, advance seaman train-
ing with the U.S. Coast Guard
stations; and basic airman and
basic medical school at the
Naval Air Station in Jacksonville.

Special magistrate declares dog dangerous

Special magistrate Bill Selmi
administered swift justice Tuesday
afternoon, Jan. 16 quickly render-
ing decisions on five code viola-
tions, imposing one fine, reducing
one fine and hearing one animal
control case.
The cases of Diane and Leo
Eppley, Joseph and Robin Herbst
and John and Dorothy McKinney
were dismissed because they were
found to be in compliance. At the
request of her attorney, Melba
Franklin's petition for a fine reduc-
tion was tabled until next month.
George F. Garrett was cited by
code enforcement officer Blanca
Saucedo for having a condemned
mobile home on his Okeechobee
Little Farms property. Mr. Selmi
ruled that he would be libel for a
fine of $250 a day for every day of
noncompliance if the mobile

According to a letter from Mr.
Game: "... his company will pro-
vide a safe environment to view
adult style entertainment in a set-
ting that will be secure from illegal
activities and be operated in a
respectable manner so that not to
hurt the county's overall reputa-
tion ... the location chosen is a
somewhat private, off the beaten
path ... where no residential
homes (are) in sight of the proper-
ty which will lessen the appear-
ance to minors."
Mr. Game also states that they
"do not permit the drinking of
alcoholic beverages within the
establishment."
According to City Planner Jim.
LaRue's staff report, this is an
authorized special exception use
within this industrial zoning dis-
trict. The requirements, according
to the land development codes, of
an adult entertainment establish-
ment are: an adult entertainment
establishment may not be permit-
ted in any area of the city except as
permitted within the industrial dis-
trict within the provisions and con-
ditions of this code; and, an adult
establishment shall not be permit-
ted to open, operate, or be
enlarged so as to come within the
following distances: 1,000 feet of a
permitted, pre-existing adult enter-
tainment establishment; 1,000 feet
of a pre-existing commercial
establishment that in any manner
sells or dispenses alcoholic bever-
ages for on-premises or off-prem-
ises consumption; 1,000 feet of a
pre-existing religious institution;
1,000 feet of a pre-existing educa-
tional institution or library; 500 feet
of an area zoned for residential

zoning without the closed alleys
would allow the developer to put
46 units per block. If the alleys are
closed, the developer would be
able to put in 54 units per block.
This developer is proposing to
develop 255 units on a total of
approximately 26 acres.
These units, which will be
sold, will be two-story units with
a garage. Some of the units will be
two bedroom, two bath, and
some will be three bedroom with
two baths.
While this number is in com-
pliance with the 10-units per acre
as a whole, the development will
have a higher number per block
because of the additional reten-
tion areas needed and the layout
of the development.
The density is not calculated
on a block-by-block level, but as a
total development.
The arrangement of the devel-
opment is based on the develop-
er's best use of the land. This
causes one block in the develop-
ment to occupy 54 units while
another block only occupies 27
units.
"If the development is required
to decrease the density, they will
have to heighten the price of the

officer Beth Albert, Basilio Ruiz
built a structure on his Okee-
chobee Gardens property without
a building permit. If he has not
obtained a building permit by Feb.
18, he could be fined $150 a day.
Because he had been charged

his U. S. 441 S.E. property, Charles
Waddlington was fined $250 a day.
However, at Mr. Waddlington's
request, Mr. Selmi gave him two

had made some progress toward
cleaning up his S.E. 39th Avenue
property. Therefore, Mr. Selmi
imposed a fine of $25 a day if full

requirement of 500 feet from an
area zoned residential, the rezon-
ing of Mr. Mason's property would
not be in compliance.
Mr. LaRue brought up the point
in his staff report that because of
the future land use of Mr. Mason's
property being residential single
family and the current zoning
holding, the only thing that it could
change to would be residential sin-
gle family.
Given that information, it
would be logical to state that even
if the said property was not cur-
rently pending a rezoning applica-
tion the adult entertainment estab-
lishment would be in danger of
being out of compliance in the
future if approved at the present
location.
There has also been a letter
from a neighboring property
owner. Carl Weidling, who is
opposing the adult entertainment
establishment.
In an unrelated matter, the city
planning board will discuss a small
scale future land use map amend-
ment submitted by Brad Good-
bread on behalf of property owner
G-4 Land & Cattle Company and
George A. Goodbread on .325-
acres located at 2104 S.W. Second
Ave.
This is located behind the land
that is currently in the process of
being rezoned to heavy commer-
cial for the potential use of a chain
restaurant agypss frq nWal-Mart.
The board will consider chang-
ing the zoning from residential sin-
gle family to light commercial.
According to Mr. LaRue's staff
report, the owner is requesting the
future land use map change in
order to operate a professional
office or to accommodate the
heavy commercial use across the
street by alternating as a parking


townhouses," said Mr. Dobbs.
"The developer is trying to make
the best use of the land in order to
offer a lower price for the units.
The developer is looking to sell
the units in the price range of
$150,000 to $175,000."
The board chose to pass the
first reading of the ordinance to
close the alleys by a 4-1 vote, with
Councilman Markham opposing.
In an unrelated matter, the city
passed the rezoning for applicant
Brad Goodbread on behalf of
property owners G-4 Land and
Cattle Company and George
Goodbread concerning a portion
of the property in the 2000 block
of Southwest Second Avenue.
The property, currently zoned res-
idential single family, is to be
changed to heavy commercial.
This property is to be used
with the surrounding property,
which is also owned by Mr. Good-
bread, for a chain restaurant.
Turning another housing
development, consideration of
the Royal Professional Builders
housing development is being
delayed until the Technical
Review Committee (TRC) has
approved a conceptual site plan
for the planned unit development
.(PUD).
Royal Professional Builders is a
division of Royal Concrete Con-
cepts, which is planning to open a
plant in Okeechobee County. The


young men and women between
the ages of 13 and 18. The local
unit averages between 30 and 45
members.
The NSW-Trident is oriented
toward Naval Special Warfare -
the Navy SEAL's and is considered
one of the most challenging pro-
grams for cadets in the nation.
Together with the U.S. Navy's
SEAL Association and the SEAL
Museum Association, the NSW-
Trident is sponsored by the OCSO
as their pro-active youth develop-
ment activity. The OCSO is dedi-
cated to the pursuit of excellence
for the cadets, and it is the belief
of the community that this type of
challenging youth program
results in reduction of juvenile
crime, delinquency, dependency
and drug abuse in the Okee-
chobee community.

inoperable vehicles and care of
premises. Code enforcement offi-
cer Saucedo stated that the proper-
ty had been cleaned up and the
vehicle on the property has been
licensed. Mr. Selmi gave him until
Feb. 18 to get the required permit
or face a fine of $100 a day. The
property in question is located in
Okeechobee Little Farms.
In the animal control case Mr.
Selmi determined that a pit bull
named Chomper owned by Phillip
White of S.W..72nd Terrace be
declared dangerous after biting
one of Mr. White's neighbors.
According to Animal Control
Officer Claire Hudson, Chomper
will have to be confined by his
owner in a six-sided pen. Whenev-

He also goes on to state in his
report that, "... public facilities
would be available, but traffic

to commercial would create an
incompatible use with the sur-
rounding neighborhood and
would not be in compliance with
the standards set forth in the com-
prehensive plan.
The board will also consider
another small comprehensive
plan map amendment from prop-
erty owners Glenda Bellamy and
Renee Ellerbee for property locat-
ed at 203 S.W. Fourth St. behind
BMJ Towing.
This .54-acre of land is currently
zoned residential single family and
is occupied by a one story single
family residence. The owners are
requesting the use change in order
to be able to utilize the existing
structure as a commercial office
for Big Lake Title due to the
required relocation of their busi-
ness.
This relocation is because of
the future development at their
current site that is owned by
George Goodbread that is pro-
posed for heavy commerce* for
the purpose of putting in'a chain
restaurant.
According to Mr. LaRue's staff
report, "The current corridor of
land designated as commercial
future land use in this area does
not cross Southwest Second
Avenue south of Southwest Fourth
Street."
It went on to say that this
change would "present inconsis-

will have to meet the deadline for
the Feb. 28 TRC meeting in order
for approval. The applicant
missed the deadline for the Janu-
ary TRC meeting.
Because this development has
become such a-high profile proj-
ect, the council may choose to
call a special meeting for this pub-
lic hearing once all requirements
have been met, and pending the
review from the Department of
Community Affairs (DCA).
If approval from the TRC
comes before the issues with the
petition are resolved with the
DCA, then the council will defer
the approval until the petition is
resolved either through mediation
or by hearing.

and Al Huggins was filed with
DCA to attempt to revoke the
change in future land use from
single family residential to multi-

The local NSW-Trident training
program is very intense and
begins with the fall semester.
New recruits are required to
undergo an indoctrination period
of approximately six weeks,
which ends in a very rigorous
four-day training exercise.
In addition to the diverse local
training program, cadets are
required to participate in physical
fitness training, pass periodic
physical fitness tests, behave
according to the standards for
military discipline and, most
importantly, maintain their grades
in school.
Although cadets undergo mili-
tary training and must maintain

Even though Joseph Jordan
had removed two RVs and an air-
boat his Treasure Island property,
Mr. Selmi ruled that he was still not
in compliance .Beginning Jan. 17,
he will be fined $200 a day until the
property is in compliance.
Omar Nafal and Maha Ishamil
were granted a 25 percent reduc-
tion of their $7,500 fine for con-
struction without a permit.

The property is also being con-
sidered for rezoning from single
family residential to commercial.
Again Mr. LaRue is recom-
mending denial based on the
inconsistency with the compre-
hensive plan that would create an
incompatibility with the surround-
ing neighborhood.
Mr. LaRue stated in his report
that "... the existing future land
use category, the existing zoning,
and the existing use are all more
compatible with the immediate
surrounding area."
All existing use, zoning and
future land use are currently single
family residential.
In other business, the planning
board will:
consider a recommendation
to the Okeechobee City Council to
completely rewrite the billboard
policy.
create a special exception to
the sexual predator ordinance to
provide for the allowance of an
institution, rehabilitation facility,
half-way house, camp, retreat or
6ther similar lodging offered as a
condition of an organized course
of treatment of sexual offenders
that may be permitted within a
zoning district designated for that
purpose or as a special exception

an ATV on public roads or
streets is prohibited "... except
that an ATV may be operated
during the daytime on an
unpaved roadway where the
posted speed limit is less than
35 miles per hour by a licensed
driver or by a minor under the
supervision of a licensed driv-
er..."
But, the commissioners
voted to exempt the county
from the state statute and
adopted an ordinance that
makes it illegal to operate ATVs
(three- and four-wheelers as
well as go-carts) on any road-
way or right-of-way.
The only time they can be
legally operated is on private
property.
"This will also apply to (the
underage operation of) golf
carts," said Maj. Stephen.
While golf carts cannot be
operated on any city, county or
state roadway and right-of-way,
it is legal for an operator with a
valid driver's license to operate
them on the streets and side-
walks within a housing subdivi-
sion or mobile home park.
Lt. Markham indicated that
anyone under the age of 18


found operating an ATV on a
roadway or right-of-way will be
stopped and, when possible,
the parents will be cited. He
said this is a second-degree mis-
demeanor.
If the operator is over the age
of 16, the operator will be
issued a citation and, if neces-
sary, the ATV or go-cart will be
towed at the owner's expense.
As part of the education
process of this heightened
enforcement, it has been pro-
posed that classes be held for
community awareness purpos-
es.
"Basically, we want to
inform them this is the parent's
responsibility and we want to
eliminate these ATV com-
plaints," said Lt. Markham.
Besides reducing the num-
ber of complaints, the enforce-
ment is aimed at curtailing the
increased number of accidents
and, in some cases, fatalities
brought about by improper use
of ATVs.
"We just can't have them on
county roads any longer," said
Maj. Stephen. "We're tired of
picking up their sons and
daughters off the road."

SFWMD re-opens equestrian areas
The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) has re-
opened equestrian areas at the DuPuis Management Area and Hick-
ory Hammock Wildlife Management Area.
The DuPuis Management Area is located in western Martin Coun-
ty, while Hickory Hammock is in Highlands County.
The areas had been temporarily closed on Dec. 22, 2006, after the
recent equine herpes outbreak.

My Safe Florida Home Program expands services


TALLAHASSEE- Working
with the Legislature to make a
number of improvements to
the state's newly-created miti-
gation fund, Florida Chief
Financial Officer Alex Sink
Wednesday commended legis-
lation moving through the
House of Representatives that
will expand protections and
access to the services available
through the My Safe Florida
Home program.
Sponsored by State Repre-
sentatives Trey Traviesa (R-
Brandon) and Franklin Sands
(D-Weston), the House legisla-
tion (5A) includes new require-
ments for wind inspectors to
pass a Level 2 background
check which includes finger-


printing, removes obstacles for
low-income homeowners
without insurance to partici-
pate in the program and cre-
ates a study committee to fur-
ther explore additional ways to
help Floridians strengthen their
homes against hurricanes.
"I share the Legislature's
goal of ensuring the proper
protections are in place and
serving a greater number of
Floridians through the My Safe
Florida Home program," said
CFO Sink. "This program pro-
vides valuable information, and
we are finding that many
homes are better fortified than
are currently recorded by insur-
ance companies. Many home-
owners are eligible to receive


discounts from their insurance
companies without even mak-
ing a single improvement."
The My Safe Florida Home
program was created by the
Legislature during the 2006
Legislative Session. Former
CFO Tom Gallagher created an
initial pilot phase of the pro-
gram comprising more than
13,000 home inspections,
which-has ended. As home-
owners receive their completed
inspection reports, they will
learn the potential improve-
ments they can make to their
homes, along with applications
for matching grant funds of up
to $5,000.

To date, the My Safe Florida
Home program has received
more than 65,000 applications
for wind inspections. CFO Sink
will continue to work with the
Legislature to make the neces-
sary improvements. Additional
applications will be processed
once the program restarts, as
early as March.

the My Safe Florida Home pro-
gram to determine the best
course of action going for-
ward," said CFO Sink. "I want
to make certain that Floridians
are given the tools and infor-
mation they need to fortify their
houses and keep their families
safe during hurricanes."

Burnard W. Walker
Burnard W Walker, age 81, of
Clendenin, W.Va., and Okee-
chobee, died Tuesday, Jan. 9,
2007, at CAMC. Mr. Walker was a
disabled Navy veteran having
served on the USS Colorado. He
had many war stories to share.
He was born April 8, 1925, at
Weir, V. Va., now known as
Falling Rock, to Martha and
"Bud" Walker. He was the third
child of seven.
Mr. Walker was preceded in
death by: his ex-wife of 50 years,
Helen Swiney; sisters, Vernida
Chandler, Maxine Engle; and,
brother, Richard Walker.
He is survived by: his chil-
dren and spouses, Charlene and
Reg Smith of Charleston, WVa.,
B. Wayne Walker, Jr., and Cheryl
of Michigan, Bobby Joe of Okee-
chobee, Paula and Kevin Paul of
Hurricane; brothers and their
spouses, Pete and Imogene
Walker of Clendenin, W. Va.,
Junior Walker of Minnora, Don-
ald and Marie Walker of Castelia,
Ohio; brother-in-law, Charles

In a remote section of Italy, there
was a small village that was known for
its prized possession, an active and ele-
gant aqueduct which wound its way
down the mountainside. For centuries,
it had stood and served...carrying water
from the pure mountain pools to the lit-
tie village below.
Modernization came to the village.
A modem water system was installed,
and the old aqueduct was no longer
needed to bring in the precious moun-
tain water.
The townspeople decided to keep their
much-loved aqueduct as a memorial.and to
preserve it as a famous landmark
"It has served long...lets cut off its
supply of water, so we may keep it for-
ever." they said.
The water was diverted from its
source, and the aqueduct was given
what they thought to be a long-needed
rest. In a few days, the sides began to
split, and as the moss and the ancient
stones dried in the sun...the wonderful
old aqueduct began to fall apart. In a
very short time, it was almost complete-
ly destroyed. What centuries of service
had failed to do, idleness had accom-
plished in a few short weeks.

WORKERS: Once again our local politicians didn't do their
homework. They have approved of another company bringing in
hundreds of uneducated cheap laborers and their families to come
to Okeechobee and put more stress on our school system and our
health care system. Not to mention what it's going to do to the work
force in Okeechobee. How many of these will be driving around
Okeechobee with no insurance or driver's license? The company
says they will hire 1,500 people from the Okeechobee area. Anyone
taking bets on who these people are going to be? These are the
things we have to remember at election time.

AGRI-CIVIC CENTER: Let's face it, the Agri-Civic Center is a huge
waste of our tax dollars. How much profit have we made on this
place? I'd love to see the numbers. And now our commissioners
want to basically hand it over to the Cattlemen's Association for
almost nothing which will cost us $50,000 in improvements. Is it me
or are the cattlemen stealing this? I've got a better idea. Use that
$50,000 to pay someone to supervise the skate park and close the
Agri-Civic Center down. Our kids have nothing to do in this town
and people wonder why there is vandalism at the skate park, which
is down the street from the sheriff's office and makes me wonder
how that can happen. Let's stop wasting money on that Agri-Civic
Center and put it where it's needed into our kids.
Editor's Note: In a story published in the Okeechobee News on
Nov. 7, 2006, the Agri-Civic Center currently costs the county
$1,471.92 a day, or $10,303.14 per week. If the facility was booked
every weekend for 104 days, or 52 weekends, at $1,000 a day that
would generate $104,000, which is about one-third of the operating
budget. County records indicated in November of 2006 that the
facility had taken in $43,358.89, or $138.53 per day. This means that
as of that date the facility is operating at a loss of $1,333.39 per day.
In round numbers, the county's expenses are $821.92 per day.
Their debt service payment on the center is $240,000 per year, or
$650 per day. This means the Agri-Civic Center has to generate
around $10,000 per week to meet the budget. As to the proposed
improvements, if the county would agree to enter into the agree-
ment as proffered by the cattlemen's group the county would have
to make improvements that would total over $500,000.

IMMIGRANTS: To everyone who is talking about illegal immi-
grants, how do you know if that gentleman who turned himself in
does not have children? If he does, eventually his children will ask
"Where is dad?" How do you explain this to a younger child? Stop
being so negative about these people. There are other people who
deal with drugs and commit crimes out there and not all of them are
illegal immigrants. Fining them $10,000 is not going to stop them
from coming into the country illegally. These illegal immigrants who
come here and those that are already here work their tails off. It's
ridiculous how this society is. What we should do is vote for the law
to change in their favor. The law should allow any illegal immigrant
to a certain extent, who can prove themselves as good citizens to
become legal in the U.S. This would help us in paying out taxes and
everything else. This would stop illegal immigrants from entering
the U.S. Whether you like it or not they are all the same as anyone
else and should be treated as such. In 2004, I became a U.S. citizen
and yet will I never vote for anyone. My vote will not count. The law
will do whatever they please. I will vote when the illegal immigrants
are treated with respect like everyone else.

Brahman grapplers take first place

The Brahman wrestling team
traveled to Martin County High
School Saturday morning and
returned to Okeechobee with
another first place trophy for the
school's trophy case.
The Brahmans won the four-
team pool to advance to the
finals.
They defeated Palm Beach
Gardens 42-25 in the first round of
competition.
In the second round, the Brah-
mans defeated Ft. Pierce West-
wood 72-9.
In the semi-finals match, the
Brahman grapplers continue their
dominance with an impressive
63-6 victory over South Fork.
The Brahmans were pitted
against a tough Dr. Krop High
School of Miami in the finals.
They defeated Dr. Krop 44-27 to
bring home the championship
trophy.
"We are starting to pull togeth-
er as a team," said Brahman head
coach Bruce Jahner. "The
younger kids are gaining experi-
ence and the veteran wrestlers are
competing at their potential. We
were a bit shallow in a few of the
weight classes earlier in the year
due to injuries. However, with
everyone in the line up and
healthy, the Brahmans will take a
shot at winning back-to-back dis-
trict titles."
The Brahman dual record
stands at 9-3 with two duals
remaining on the schedule. They
are Jan. 25-Vero Beach Dual at
Vero Beach-7 p.m.; Jan. 31-Trea-
sure Coast Dual at Okeechobee-
Parent and Senior Night-7 p.m.
The girls' team saw action last
Saturday at the Harmony Tourna-
ment in Kissimmee. Lady Brah-
man senior Candi Rivera captured
third place in the all-girl tourney.
The Treasure Lake Conference

The American Legion Post #64

open Monday to Saturday from 10
a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sunday from

Our kitchen is open daily serv-
ing a regular menu. The hours of

The 51st American Legion
Free Fair will be held Feb. 1-11 at

Officers to


explain military


health benefits


Local area military retirees and
their families will have the oppor-
tunity to hear of various medical
benefits available to them on Sat-
urday, Jan. 20.
A team of officers headed by
Air Force Colonel Michael T. Cul-
hane, MacDill AFB Hospital Com-
mander, will be making presenta-
tions at the monthly luncheon
meeting of the South Central
Florida Chapter of the Military
Officers Association of America
(MOAA).
The luncheon being held at
the Sebring Sun 'N Lake Golf and
Country Club's Candlelight
Restaurant, will be open to all mil-
itary retirees, regardless of rank,
announced retired Air Force
Colonel Roy P. Whitton, Lake.
Placid, chapter president.
"This will give the military
retiree and his family an opportu-
nity to hear of the services offered
at MacDill AFB as well as details of
military mail order pharmacy
benefits," Whitton explained.
Colonel Culhane assumed his
present duties as the MacDill AFB
Hospital commander in Sept.
2006, following his previous
assignment as Chief, Medical
Inspection Division, Air Force
Inspection Agency at Kirtland
AFB, N.M.
Joining him for the MOAA
luncheon briefing will be Lieu-

Bike rally benefits local charities
Splinter Productions will present an Okeechobee Memorial Day

Artists wanted for mural project
Okeechobee Main Street's Mural and Visual Arts committee is
seeking an experienced mural artist to paint an outside mural.-The
building the mural will be painted on is the Embarq/Sprint building
located in the heart of the City of Okeechobee at 110 S Parrott Ave.
The expected size of the mural should cover the front of the two-
story by 30-foot building. The theme of the mural will feature the his-
tory of the telephone service in Okeechobee. Two portraits will be
required for this project. The mural committee is accepting designs
and proposals for this mural project. Project is to begin in the spring
