Cobras pins Brahman
grapplers 41-28
The Brahman wrestling
team hosted the Cobras of Ft.
Pierce Central High School and
came up short 41-28.
The Brahmans began the
dual meet giving up six points
with a forfeiture in the 189-
pound weight class. They
wound up winning in four
weight classes by pin and one
weight class by major decision.

European Circus: Thrills, fantasy and fun

The Anastasini European Big Top Extravaganza Circus Spectacular has come to town.
Some of the events the show will include are aerial fantasy balancing, clowns, jugglers,
comredpshow and-a dog show. The Anastasini family has p1ai5ihted and performed the
European circus for generations. Shows will be on Friday, Jan. 12, Saturday, Jan. 13,

The Big Top comes to town

The Okeechobee Chamber of
Commerce has brought the Anas-
tasini Big Top Extravaganza Cir-
cus Spectacular to Okeechobee.
The show includes aerial fan-
tasy, balancing, clowns, world
champion jugglers, aerial rocket
stars, a comedy show, outdoor
show, dog show, magic show and
thrill show.
The dogs used in the dog show
are trained by the Anastasini fami-
ly and all were saved from animal
shelters.
The show is being held at the
American Legion Fairgrounds
behind the City Fire Department.
The Anastasini family has been
performing and presenting the
European circus for generations.
They have been in the United
States for 25 years but are original-
ly from Milan, Italy.
They currently reside in Engle-
wood. They travel all over the
United States bringing their Euro-
pean Circus to entertain the citi-
zens of many towns along the
way. Asua Espana, 17, is displaying aerial fantasy on the

escapees hail


from N. Florida

The identities of two
escapees from the VisionQuest
facility on U.S. 441 N. have been
released by the Okeechobee
County Sheriff's Office (OCSO).
The two females, ages 15 and
16, fled from the facility around
10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10.
According to OCSO Lieu-
tenant Billy Markham, both girls
are from north Florida.
The 16-year-old is described
as a black female who stands 5-
foot-4-inches tall and weighs 120
pounds. When last seen she was
wearing a bright green shirt,
navy blue sweat pants and ten-
nis shoes. Lt. Markham said she
is from Crawford.
The 15-year-old is described
as a white female who stands 5-
foot-7-inches tall and weighs 130
pounds. When last seen she was
wearing a bluish gray T-shirt


with a collar, blue sweat pants
and tennis shoes. She is from
Dunedin, said Lt. Markham.
OCSO deputies were made
aware of the escape at 11:06
a.m. and were sent to the facility
to help search for the girls. Lt.
Markham said authorities were
also searching on horseback.
Also assisting in the search
was the K-9 unit from the Okee-
chobee Correctional Institute
(OCI).
"We tracked them toward
the Florida Turnpike but the
track discontinued," said OCI
warden CharlesLambdin-
Since the trail went cold at
that point, the warden theorized
that someone may have been
waiting for the escapees and
then aided in their escape from
that point.
He went on to say the two
bloodhounds are kept and

Family searching



for missing teen


Investigators are seeking
information as to the where-
abouts of a local girl who has
not been seen or heard from
since Dec. 29, 2006.
Detective Sergeant T.J.
Brock of the Okeechobee
County Sheriff's Office (OCSO)
said Thursday that Donna Faye
White, 15, was reported miss-
ing by her family on Jan. 1,
2007.
Sgt. Brock said the girl is
described as being 5-foot-4-
inches tall and weighing 105
pounds. The teen has blond
hair and blue eyes.
He said she may be in the
Mosquito Creek area and living
with someone, but that has not
been substantiated.
She has not been seen since
leaving her home on that Fri-

tiple diabolos can be spun on a
single string which makes a huge
variety of tricks possible using the
sticks, string and various body
parts.
They also use the Chiffon,
which is a long piece of material
that the performer climbs and
does various aerial stunts by
wrapping the material around
their arms or legs.

12, at 7:30 p.m. Three shows will
be held on Saturday, Jan. 13, 1,
4:30 and 7:30 p.m. There will be

Here are our "Students of the Week" for Jan.8 through Jan. 12. The following students
are achieving excellence in the classroom, (in no particular order), Kindergarten stu-
dents are, Caleb Joiner, Angel Garcia, and Brenda Abonza-Yanez. First grade students
are, Carolina Trejo, Rebecca Starnes, Colton Rhoden, Alexis Garcia and Yasmine Cabr-
era; Second students are, Montana Margeson, Devon Jones, Carlie Sujeta, Mariah
Whaley, and Adriana Hernandez. Third grade students are Kourtney Souder, Breanna
Sellers, Regina Buettner, April Hogenkamp, and Karina Campos. Fourth grade stu-

Mrs. Wright's class wrote
about the gingerbread houses
that they decorated. The stu-
dents enjoyed chewing "Pop
Rocks" bubble gum while learn-
ing about the letter "Bb". They
also had a lot of fun playing with
balloons and blowing bubbles.
Many of the students know their
letters and sounds. In math, we
are studying the numbers
between 11 20. We have a new
job wheel that gives all students
a daily responsibility. Our class
is going to have a great New
Year!
Mrs. Claypool's class started
off the New Year reviewing all
our letters and sounds. We are
working hard on blending let-
ters into words. We are learning
the letter "Bb" and the sight
word "do". We will be working
on writing a narrative story. In
math, we are learning all the
numbers to 20. We are seeing
2007 with an exciting start!
Mrs. Smith's class' is busy
learning about 30 shapes or
"Geo Solids". We are finding
cones, cylinders, spheres,
cubes, and prisms all around us.
We have been investigating
which objects will stack, slide,
and roll. We love math!


Second Grade
Mrs. Brady's class is back and
busily working! We are studying
owls and are going Ito dissect
owl pellets to find bones. We are
learning about counting money,
famous inventors and scientists.
Also learning to add more detail
and describing words in our
writing. Our learning will never
end! Keep reading 100 Book
Challenge! Happy New Year!
Ms. Hunt's class really missed
each other! It was fun to share
our Christmas stories and some
of our favorite gift. Right now
we're brainstorming some real-
istic resolutions to make for
2007. Some are definitely easier
than others. Happy New Year!
Mrs. Campbell's class is look-
ing forward to reading the sto-
ries in our new reading book.
We'll be working on counting
money. It takes a lot of practice!
We all enjoyed our Christmas
vacations. We say what's not to
like. You get to" eat a lot of great
food and open fantastic pres-
ents. Now we are ready to make
our New Year's Resolutions and
start the new year off right. Mrs.
Kirby's class says, "Watch us go,
we're powered up for a great
new year."
Mr. Wright's class is working
on a money unit in math. We
have started a new reading
book, and we'll be writing about
summer vacations. We are also
studying about scientists.
What an awesome New Year!
Ms. Stokes' class is eagerly antic-
ipating the challenges of the sec-
ond half of the school year.
Everyone is excited to begin a
new reading book. We begin
Monday with the story, "The Day
Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash."
Congratulations to our class

Pineda and our alternate Brean-
na Blount.

Third Grade
Miss Kauffman's class contin-
ues to work on multiplication in
math. We are finding out how


science and math are connected
as we begin a unit on measure-
ment. In reading, we are work-
ing hard on improving our fluen-
cy and summarizing stories.
Social studies is fun and exciting
as we learn new things from
"Scholastic News". We will even
be writing about some of the
articles we read!
Mrs. Laughlin's class is work-
ing very hard on reading com-
prehension and fluency.
Remember to read 30 minutes
every night!
Mr. Vien's class is working on
multiplication in Math. Also
FCAT binders challenge us daily
with FCAT type questioning. We
are working on fluency and Indi-
an tales genre in reading.
Remember to read 30 minutes at
home every evening We are writ-
ing about our New Year's resolu-
tions and will show them off at
the next PTO 'meeting. We have
earned an incentive party (pop-
corn and a movie) by having
great behavior each day!
Ms. Tilton's class is finishing
up a math unit on multiplication.
Soon we'll be exploring new
ideas like mean, median, mode,
range and average. In science
we are exploring ways to esti-
mate and measure length,
weight and capacity. As always
we continue to practice our
FCAT reading skills with 100
Book Challenge and daily skills
worksheets.

Miss May, Mrs. Enrico and Mr.
Bonasera are happy to be back
and ready to start the New Year.
Our students are gearing up to
take the FCAT in February and
Florida Writes. Parents please
remember to read with your
child each night!

Obituaries


Jane Daniels Maddox
Jane Daniels Maddox, age 59,
of Okeechobee, died Tuesday,
Jan. 9, 2007, at her residence.
Born April 5, 1947, she had been
a resident of Okeechobee for the
past 34 years. She was a retired
schoolteacher working with the
Okeechobee County School Sys-
tem for 31 years. She enjoyed
flowers, wildlife, gardening,
reading and cooking.
She is survived by sisters,
Lynda (Carson) Callahan of
North Port and Sandra Maddox
of Pittsburgh, Pa.
A memorial service will be
held Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at 2
p.m., at the Buxton Funeral
Home.
In lieu of flowers the family
has asked donations be made to
Hospice of Okeechobee, P.O.
Box 1548, Okeechobee, Fla.
34973.
All arrangements are under
the care and direction of Buxton
Funeral Home and Crematory,
110 N. E. Fifth Street, Okee-
chobee.
Carol L. Spray
Carol L. Spray, age 92, of
Georgia, died Jan. 10, 2007. Mrs.


Spray was born Oct. 3, 1914, in
Florida to the late Elisha and
Minnie (Hendrix) Prevatt. She
was a homemaker.
Mrs. Spray is survived by her
daughter, Carolyn Smith of
Colquitt, Ga.; two sons, Donald
Spray of Isle of Palm, S.C. and
Loue Spray of Tavares; two
brothers, Mark Prevatt of Erevin,
N.C. and Robert Prevatt of

Lavelle R. "Chick" Hargis, age
91, of Okeechobee, died Mon-
day, Jan. 8, 2007, in Levy County.
Born June 7, 1915, in Sulphur
Spring, Texas he lived in Okee-
chobee for 16 years, but resided
the last nine years in Williston.
He enjoyed fishing and was a
member of the Church of Christ.
Mr. Hargis is preceded in
death by his wife, Pauline Har-
gis.
He is survived by his son,
Robin Edward (Jenee) Hargis
and a daughter, Paul Sue (Sid)
Johnson of Miami. In addition he
is survived by grandchildren,
Todd Robinson Hargis of Willis-
ton and Matthew Lavelle John-
son of Miami.
Services will be Friday, Jan.
12, 2007, with visitation from 10
until 11 a.m. followed by servic-
es at 11 a.m. at the Buxton
Funeral Home. Interment will
follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

Talented middle and high
schools artists are being
sought by the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Com-
mission (FWC) to participate
in its 16th annual Manatee
Decal Art contest. The winning
artwork will become the
design for the 2007-08 state
manatee decal and sold at
county tax collectors' offices to
benefit manatee research and
protection programs.
The contest is open to all
middle school and high school
students who attend public,
private or home schools in
Florida.
"This art project has been
very successful in encouraging
students to learn about mana-
tees and their role in Florida's
environment," said Bonnie
Abellera, manatee decal coor-
dinator. "It's great to see the
artistic variety, but the most
rewarding thing for us is seeing
how interested kids are in













We were thumbing through
a book of children's prayers the
other day. It contained the usual
beautiful little prayers for chil-
dren, and they were all well
done -- striking illustrations and,
in general, good taste through-
out the book.
There was one prayer in this
book, however, that was out-
standing! It was illustrated with
the picture of a little boy lying on
the grass with his puppy dog
beside him. The puppy had one
of his forepaws bandaged, and
here is the prayer:
"My pet does not feel well
today, God. He doesn't want to
play with me. Please help me to
take care of him."
A child's prayer? Yes, but
isn't that the true prayer that all
people should pray? "Help me
to care..." Here we find no self-
ishness -- just a petition for guid-
ance in service.

PHONE NUMBER: I had a reason to call the Post Office today and
when I looked up the number in our directory under businesses I
found out they are not listed. I then called information and got an 800
number, which then gave me a whole long list of options and finally
found out the Post Office number here in town is (863) 763-3616 in
case anybody would like to put it in their book perchance they have to
make a call to the Post Office. Editor's Note: The phone number for the
Post Office in Okeechobee can also be found on page 6 of the pink
pages in the phone book.

IMMIGRANTS: I see where they caught another boat load of illegal
immigrants. I think they need to fine them at least $10,000, let them
spend six months in jail then send them home. Maybe that would cut
down on everybody coming across illegally. Maybe they would get the
message that they can't enter the country illegally.

LETTER: This is about the Jan. 10 letter to the editor. She needs to
know that when Moslems declare a. holy war they think that they get
everything they didn't have money, power, wealth and so forth.
They also have a different mentality when it comes to our way of think-
ing. I agree with her. You don't get all that.

LEGISLATORS: I just heard on TV where they want to raise mini-
mum wage to $10.25 an hour. I think that is great. Now if you can get
some of the congressmen and senators to quit giving themselves rais-
es up to $128,000 to $150,000 a year for doing nothing maybe we
could get rid of some of the dead weight in Washington. They got peo-
ple who have been up there since 1966 or earlier that are 80 and 90
years old. It's time for them to get out of there.

ESCAPE: This is in regards to the kids who escaped from the Eck-
erd's Youth department where they beat the people up out there.
We're the last to know. It's been two weeks ago and they just got it in
the paper? The people could have been running around in our neigh-
borhoods and we didn't know it? How about letting us know when it
happens so we can be on the lookout. Editor's Note: We are not
aware of any escape from EYDC in the past couple of weeks, nor is
the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's office said there
was an 'escape' there a couple of weeks ago, but it was a mock
escape done for practice. Is it possible the escape you are referring to
took place at a facility in Glades County? We reported on that escape
when law enforcement was having little to no luck developing leads
or information. Two guards were beaten in that escape, one serious-
ly. At that time we could not tell our readers where the escapees were
or their direction of travel because law enforcement didn't know. The
name of that facility is the Florida Environmental Institute (FEI). It is
also called the Last Chance Ranch. Two of those escapees have been
apprehended in Homestead.

SKATE PARK: About the skate park, just close it down. If they can't
take care of their own park where they had a place to skate and go by
the rules, they don't need one. Make it into a ball field. The little kids
are out here playing ball. Do they have a problem with their conces-
sion stands with vandalism? Where are their parents when they play
ball? Get with it kids. If you want a skate park, take care of it and follow
the rules.

WAR: I would like to know why the politicians don't send their chil-
dren to the war. They want to send 20,000 troops, let them send their
kids too. I have a kid in the Army.

MORE TROOPS: If you are going to send 20,000 more troops to Iraq
send them on but have the politician's sons and daughters lead the
way.

Benefit shoot slated for Jan. 20
A sporting clay fun shoot will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, at Quail
Creek Plantation on S.R. 68 E. five miles east of U.S. 441 N. Pro-

An AARP driver safety course will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, and
Saturday, Jan. 27, from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at St. Theresa's
Catholic Church fellowship hall at the corner of Chobee Loop and
S.R. 78 in Buckhead Ridge. Both days must be attended to com-
plete the course. You do not have to be a member of AARP or have
AARP auto insurance. All seniors 55 and over are invited. Consult

Church will host Christian band
The Annie Moses Band, a high energy Christian music band,
will be at the First Baptist Church, 401 S.W. Fourth St., on Tuesday,
Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. This group sings and plays the violin, viola,
cello, harp, keyboard, piano, etc. They are a group of at least six
that puts a whole new enthusiasm into playing strings.

The Brahman wrestling team
hosted the Cobras of Ft. Pierce
Central High School and came up
short 41-28.
The Brahmans began the dual
meet giving up six points with a


forfeiture in the 189-pound
weight class. They wound up
winning in four weight classes by
pin and one weight class by major
decision.
The following Brahmans won
their matches by pin: Robbie Har-
rell-103 lbs.; Donny Bush-130 lbs.;
Brandon Ashley-160 Ibs. and


Chris Curtis-heavyweight.
Michael Brishke won by major
decision (10-1) in the 119-lb.
class.
The Brahmans now have a 5-3
season record. They will take to
the mat again on Jan. 13 when
they travel to Martin County High
School for a dual tournament.


The Lady Brahmans will also see
action on Jan. 13 when they travel
to Kissimmee for the Harmony
Girls Tournament. Both tourna-
ments will begin at 10 a.m.
The Brahmans will host the
Treasure Lake Conference tour-
nament on Saturday, Jan. 20.

City to fence in loading ramp

BELLE GLADE At a special
meeting that held Jan. 5, Belle
Glade commissioners voted to
fence off the loading ramp area
near downtown Belle Glade.
Commissioners say the fenc-
ing will be at least six feet high,
and will feature barbed wire. Two
16-feet wide gates will allow
entry and exit of the perimeter
and will be fortified with two
combination locks at the loca-
tion, on Southwest Avenue D
between Southwest Fifth and
Sixth Streets.
Vice Mayor Don Garrett pre-
sented the motion, supported by
Mayor Ray Torres Sanchez and
Commissioner Shelly Miller.
Commissioner Mary Kendall
opposed the action; Commis-
sioner Gwen Asia-Williams was
not in attendance.
The city has plans to put no
trespassing signs around the
perimeter to keep people out of
the area. Anyone who trespasses
will be given a warning by the
sheriff's office to stay off the
premises. A second violation will
result in arrest.
There is currently no definitive
timeline for the construction of
the fence.
Commissioner Garrett said his
purpose for fencing off the area is
in curbing criminal activity in the
area.
The commissioner said he
came up with the idea of the
fence after taking a late-night tour
of the loading ramp, a local gath-
ering spot where dozens of peo-
ple meet in sometimes large
crowds that remain well into the
night.
Commissioner Garrett, with-
out being specific, said he was
surprised by the amount of crimi-
nal activities he saw.
A shooting there ended with a
death at the beginning of the year.
Already the motion has been
met with opposition by some on
the board.
Commissioner Kendall said
she believed the motion was
rushed, and lacks thought. She
encouraged the board to allow
for more community input before
going forward with the proposal.
Some in the community are
worried that if the loading ramp is
kept off-limits, criminals will sim-
ply find other placesJ.a. gather.
One of those concerned is Leon-
drae Camel, the coordinator of
the local Weed and Seed pro-
gram.

and Seed program sees him and
his staff working on eliminating

plague the city, including criminal
activity and other issues. The pro-
gram identifies the problems and
comes up with alternative solu-
tions to keep them from reoccur-
ring. His program focuses on the
loading ramp as part of its cover-
age area.
Placing a fence around the
loading ramp will not solve the
problem, Mr. Camel said, it will
simply move it to a different area,
or mask it without directly
addressing it.
"I believe that this will in effect
disperse crime here in Belle
Glade," said Mr. Camel. "It's
wrong to put fencing around the
loading ramp where the majority
of African-Americans in Belle
Glade congregate. They should
not make that move within the
Weed and Seed community,"
said Mr. Camel.
Business owner Clara Brown-
Hessing, who owns Cookee's Hot
Spot on Avenue D, across the
street from the loading ramp, has
also expressed concern at the
commission's decision.
"The loading ramp is not the
problem," said Ms. Brown-Hess-
ing. "The gangs that have been
allowed to develop and gain
strength are responsible for the
rampant crime that is currently
happening in this community,"
she said.
The loading ramp she is famil-
iar with has been a gathering spot
for the community for at least 50
years she said, with middle-aged
and elderly citizens gathering
there to catch up on the latest
sports news or reminisce.
The gang problem, she said,
has only recently begun to crop
up.
The city instead of continuing
plans for a fence should direct the
sheriff's office to concentrate
more of their efforts to targeting
that issue, Ms. Hessing said.
"I am safer being at my busi-
ness here at the loading ramp
rather than being at a stoplight or

said Ms. Hessing.
Ms. Hessing said she was
shocked when at Monday night's
city commission meeting the
mayor, vice-mayor and one of the
commissioners abruptly
adjourned the meeting after sev-
eral citizens in attendance voiced
their displeasure at the decision.
Commissioner Asia-Williams,
who was absent from the Friday
meeting, also felt there could
have been more community
involvement.
"It is apparent that the com-
mission is not seeking communi-
ty input to solve their community
issues. I wonder why the loading
ramp issue would not be includ-
ed in the already scheduled meet-
ing set for Monday night," said
Ms. Williams.
Ms. Williams feels that there is
a need to be open and sensitive
to the needs of the community-at-
large. Her concern is that while
crime is rampant in Belle Glade, it
is not primarily based around the
loading ramp, as echoed by con-
cerned residents of Belle Glade.
"My thing is that we need to
use the resources available to the
city beginning with the Weed and
Seed program, as well as our
churches and local organizations.
I also believe that the PBSO needs
to implement community polic-
ing due to underdeveloped rela-
tionships with our residents," Ms.
Williams said
Anything less than that
approach is too harsh, some say.
"It's like treating the residents
of the southwest part of Belle
Glade like they're in a concentra-
tion camp," said Mr. Camel.

Parade, concert for MLK Day

Glades 2007 Martin Luther King
Committee will sponsor the
MLK Annual Parade on Monday,
Jan. 15. The parade will con-
vene at 10 a.m. with the line-up
at Lake Shore Middle School.
The parade is open to
marchers, floats, cars and flags.
It will begin there at the middle
school and end at the Old Lake
Shore Middle School, located
on Southwest 10th Street.
In its sixth year of operation,
the Committee's vision for the
event is to represent all the dif-
ferent cultures that live in Belle
Glade. Therefore, flags of no
fewer than 19 nations will be
displayed throughout the
parade.
The theme of the parade this
year is "United and Continuing
the Dream VI."
Ms. Hammond, along with
concert committee member
Dax Dunn and Glades Area
Youth Council Advisor Percy
Naper, also plan to have a
memorial in remembrance of
Dr. Martin Luther King.
The memorial will follow the
parade at noon. A reggae con-
cert will be held later that day, at
4 p.m. at the loading ramp by
Southwest Fifth Street.
Mr. Naper and Mr. Dunn are
especially excited about the reg-
gae performance.
They believe it will bring a lot
of positive energy to the Glades
community and will provide for
fun and entertainment for the
community at large.

committee is expecting a big
crowd to come out and support

the Dream," celebrating Dr. Martin
Luther King's life.
"We are planning to have mul-
timedia and performing arts fea-

FOR THE OKEECHOBEE COUNTY AIRPORT
Notice is hereby given that Okeechobee County, Florida, hereby requests proposals
from qualified firms to provide on-cal consulting services at the Okeechobee County
Airport. Qualified firms must have recent experience (i.e. within the last five (5)
years) in airport system and planning work, and be familiar with FAA and FOOT re-
quirements and procedures. The successful proposer shall be responsible for on-
call airport consulting services, FAANFOT grant planning and coordination, and
such other tasks as assigned, e.g., studies, planning design, permitting, inspec-
tions, testing, estimating, reports, and like services, he contractor shall provide all
labor, materials, equipment and supervision necessary for the completion of any
work provided.
The proposed general consulting contract period would cover an initial three-year
period, with a one-time two-year renewal option. The proposed agreement for pro-
fessional services Is expected to commence on or about March 1, 2007. The annu-
al level of expenditure for contract services is expected to not exceed $10,000.
Proposals to provide the on-call consulting services shall include a narrative de-
scription of the proposers qualifications to provide the required services, and an
hourly rate table of the proposers employee classifications to provide the required
services.
