Group's lease deal unsettled

Commission
takes no action
on cattlemen's offer
By Pete Gawda
Okeechobee News
Where the Okeechobee Cat-
tlemen's Association will hold
future rodeos is still undecided.
Although the Okeechobee
County Board of County Com-
missioners discussed the matter

at their Tuesday, Jan. 9, meeting
no action was taken.
"I've had to put something on
paper to be a starting point," stat-
ed county attorney John Cassels
concerning his draft proposal on
leasing the agri-civic center to the
cattlemen's association.
Commissioner Marvin Wher-
rell said that Mr. Cassels' propos-
al was "definitely a good start."
"We need to do this," he
added.
Mr. Wherrell said the county

needs to be involved in a joint
effort with an organization that
has been conducting two money
making events a year that bring
people to Okeechobee.
In their draft proposal, the cat-
tlemen had requested improve-
ments including enlarging the
arena seating capacity and build-
ing two ticket booths and a rodeo
office. These improvements
were estimated to cost about
$500,000. They also request that
the facility be named after the

Central Elementary: Spelling champs

OK--.chobee News/Lorna Jablonski
Central Elementary School held its annual spelling bee on Tuesday morning. Andrea
McKinney (left) finished in first place; Jessica Mond (center) took second place and
Candace McGlamory (right) came in third. Ms. McKinney and Ms. Mond, both fourth
grade students, will now compete in district competition at South Elementary School on
Feb. 15. Ms. McGlamory will serve as an alternate school representative and will com-
pete if one of the other girls is unable to compete.

cattlemen's group for perpetuity.
Mr. Cassels noted that the
improvements requested by the
cattlemen could be used
throughout the year. He said that
50 percent of the use would be
by cattlemen and 50 percent
would be for the general public.
Therefore, he proposed in his
draft that the cattlemen pay for
half of the proposed improve-
ments.
The contract would be for five
year increments.

The payments were set up
such that the cattlemen would
pay off their share of the
improvements in 15 years. Mr.
Cassels said if, after five years, the
county cancelled the agreement
the cattlemen would not have to
pay the balance. However, if the
cattlemen cancelled the agree-
ment, they would be obligated to
pay off the balance of the loan.
Under Mr. Cassels' draft propos-

Impact fees would
likely pay for 30%
of capital projects
By Pete Gawda
Okeechobee News
Although they took no
action, the Okeechobee Coun-
ty Board of County Commis-
sioners spent a considerable
amount of time discussing
impact fees at their meeting
Tuesday, Jan. 9.
The item was not on the
agenda because the informa-
tion was not received in time.
The board met on Tuesday
rather than their regular meet-

ing day of Thursday because
the two newly elected com-
missioners, Marvin Wherrell
and Noel Chandler, will be
attending classes in Ocala on
Thursday.
Walter Keller, the consult-
ant hired by the county to do
an impact fee study, presented
a draft report to the commis-
sioners on his findings. He
told the commissioners that
impact fees would pay an esti-
mated 30 percent of capital
projects. He recommended
that impact fees be adjusted
annually to compensate for
cost of living increases and

Man's death not

By Eric Kopp
Okeechobee News
MUSE Based on the
Medical Examiner's findings,
the skeletal remains found last
month near a pond in rural
Glades County were those of a
missing Muse man.
The remains were found
near a pond on private proper-

ty shortly after noon on Tues-
day, Dec. 5. According to
Detective Steve Harris of the
Glades County Sheriff's Office
(GCSO), the site is about 5 to 7
miles from the Charlotte
County line and about 25 to 30
miles from Moore Haven.
Muse is located in the west-
ern portion of Glades County.
Detective Harris said on

al, the cattlemen would pay
$50,000 up front and $25,000 a
year.
The proposal also suggests
that the cattlemen pay a percent-
age of the profits over a certain
amount as well as paying for utili-
ties during the time of the lease.
"This is closer to a true cost
share than we looked at the first
time," said Commissioner Elvie
Posey.
Facility manager Pete Keogh
and the agri-center advisory com-
mittee were asked to look at the
draft and bring back a recom-
mendation for the Jan. 25 meet-
ing. It was the board's consensus
that after that meeting a work-
shop be set up with the cattle-
men's association and the fair
committee since the fair would be
going on at the same time as the
Speckled Perch Rodeo.
In a related matter, commis-
sioners approved two Florida
Department of Transportation
(FDOT) projects. One project will
fund design, building and installa-
tion of landscaping at both

entrances to the agri-civic center.
The other project will fund the
design, building and installation
of two "Welcome to Okee-
chobee" signs to be installed on
U.S. 441 N. and State Road 78 W.
near the county line.
In an unrelated matter, com-
missioners approved a memoran-
dum of understanding to partici-
pate in a program to attract
industry to the central Florida
area. The catalyst project is
designed to attract industry to the
area served by FHREDI DeSo-
to, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, High-
lands and Okeechobee counties
and the communities of
Immokalee in Collier County and
South Bay, Pahokee and Belle
Glade in Palm Beach County.
Each county would be able to
receive ad valorem taxes from the
project.
The memorandum of under-
standing does not obligate the
county in any way.
In other action, the board:
abandoned a county right-
of-way on Newcomer Road, or
S.E. 48th Street;
directed staff to begin road
abandonment of N.W. 16th Street
in order to afford Royal Center

A dog house is a place Arrest Report

for Fido to call home

COLLEGE STATION- If you
want to stay out of the dog house
with Poochie, make sure that he
,has a warm, dry, place to sleep in
,the winter and a cool place to nap
'in the summer.
Dr. Lore Haug, a veterinarian in
,Texas A&M University's College of
Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical
Sciences, says "The perfect dog
house for any canine companion is
the climate controlled house that
its owner calls home." But many
'pet owners rely on dog houses
-either as primary shelters or as an
.alternative to their pet staying out-
side to brave the elements while
his owners are at work.
Selecting the perfect home-
away-from home for your canine
should take some thought and
planning. In fact, when you're
shopping for dog houses, the most
.important point may be that one
size does not fit all.
"The dimensions of the dog
'house really should be determined
by the size of the dog," said Haug.
"Your dog should be able to stand,
turn around, and lie down com-
fortably inside of the dog house."
'And, the dog house should be ver-
satile enough to accommodate the
extreme temperatures and humidi-
y where you live.
Metal and plastic can absorb
heat or freezing temperatures,
negating some of the benefits of
having the dog house for shelter.
,"Wood is the best material for
making a dog house," said Haug.
"Make sure the wood is unpressur-
ized and be wary of toxic treat-
ments." Basically, if the wood and
the paint used in constructing the
,dog house are identified as being
safe for children, they should also
'be safe for Fido. "When dogs get
pored, they tend to chew on their
dog houses. You have to make sure
that if they do, it won't make them
sick," added Haug.
Peaked roofs can facilitate

drainage but flat or slightly slanted
roofs may provide Fido with a loft
bed. "Many dogs prefer to lie on
top of their dog houses, so, you
might want to consider a flat roof."
It is also important to make sure
that there are no sharp edges on
the dog house and that the hard-
ware has been well concealed,
minimizing the chance for injury.
And, while your canine may not
need designer digs, there are some
features worth the extra time and
money that will provide added
comfort and convenience.
"Look for a dog house with an
offset door or a second room
which will provide a wall which
can break the wind or shelter him
from a blowing rain. Adding a
weather flap can accomplish the
same goal." If possible, elevate the
dog house to help with parasite
control and to deter flooding. Set-
ting the dog house on a few well-
placed cinder blocks or on a stable
wooden pallet will do the trick.
"If you can, you'll want to get a
dog house with a hinged roof to
make it easier to clean out," said
Haug. "To provide the ultimate in
outdoor living, consider hinged win-
dows which can provide additional
ventilation and an awning to pro-
vide some shade in the summer."
"Whether your canine com-
panion is short or tall, skinny or
plump, don't forget that your dog
deserves a home that fits his style
and physique. So when consider-
ing whether to purchase or build
your next doggie dwelling, remem-
ber that one size doesn't fit all," she
adds.

HIT AND RUN: To the person who hit my SUV at a local store park-
ing lot and left, shame on you. I know it was a full sized truck with a
large muffler system because the imprint of your pipe cut a hole
through the bumper and broke the chrome grill. In case you read this
and have a conscience, I just thought I'd let you know that SUV was a
gift to me from the community to serve the homeless and the needy in
our county. My husband and I work 12-14 hours a day in this commu-
nity and then someone like you gives us a bad feeling we don't like to
have about our fellow man. The replacement parts will have to come
out of our pockets as we don't want that on our insurance due to
someone else's ignorance. Just one more reminder, the parking lot
has cameras and God saw you.

LEASE: I read about the proposed rental agreement for the Cattle-
men's Association at the Agri-Civic Center this morning. I suggest we
don't take that. Let's not give them the Agri-Civic Center too.

Letters to the Editor

We reap
what we sow
As I watched television on the
night of Dec. 29,1 I waited with the
world for the announcement of
the death of Saddam Hussein,
also known as the 'Butcher of
Baghdad.'
As we all know, he murdered
many people comparable only to
Adolf Hitler. Yet, as much as I
believed that this evil tyrant must
be eliminated, I felt sorrow for his
lost soul and for his family.
Moments before his execution, I
said a prayer for this hated man,
although he himself saw no need
for any repentance.

As difficult as it is for us to
imagine, it is very possible that
this man thought what he did was
right. This kind of perverted think-
ing can be dangerous in the mind
of such an individual, as we've
seen.
I thought of how ironic that
not too far from his own country
there in the Middle East was born
a savior, even for Saddam Hus-
sein. Sadly, he saw no need for
salvation and his sins followed
him to the other side of eternity.
Such a waste of humanity.
The last words of John Wilkes
Booth came to mind as I watched
and listened. The assassin of
Abraham Lincoln asked as he lay
dying for his hands to be raised so

he could look at them. Then he
said, "Useless! Useless!"
II Samuel Chapter I verse 27
declares, "How are the mighty
fallen, and the weapons of war
perished?" This mighty dictator
who once owned lavish palaces
and dined with kings was now a
hated man gone from the earth to
answer to the King of Kings. The
law of the harvest is that we will
reap what we sow.
For years we have heard the
song which asks the question,
"Will the circle be unbroken?" Of
course, this means in heaven, but
what about the other circle of
loved ones gone on? I'm referring
to those who followed in the foot-
steps of evil does and specifically

of the two sons of Hussein who
were hunted down and killed like
the animals they had become.
Saddam Hussein was hung a
little before 10 p.m. our time. It
crossed my mind that before mid-
night, he would be united with
these two children he had
fathered and raised. It wouldn't
be a reunion in heaven, but in
hell.
I am not being judgmental.
The Bible tells us that "As the tree
falls, so shall it lie." We can't live
wrong and die right. Don't forget
that "Unto you is born in the City
of David, a savior which is Christ
the Lord."

Hunt named

Red Cross

chief officer
Appointment
follows 10 years
of dedicated service
PALM BEACH The Greater
Palm Beach Area Chapter of the
American Red ..
Cross
announces that
J.B. Hunt is the
chapter's new
chief executive
officer, effective
immediately.
She will oversee
the four coun-
ties within the J.B.
chapter's con-
fines, including Hunt
Glades, Hendry,
Okeechobee and Palm Beach.
"We are pleased to have some-
one on board who knows our
community and our chapter so
well," says Robert Dillingham,
Chapter Chairman. "She has
worked closely with us for the past
three years, and we look forward to
her leadership."
Hunt has an extensive history
with the Red Cross. After joining
the organization in 1996, she
gained knowledge through CPR
and First Aid courses, and worked
her way up to an elected official
with the Florida Voluntary Organi-
zations Active in Disaster (VOAD).
During her tenure, she coordinated
with other statewide agencies to
enhance disaster responses during
numerous tropical storms and hur-
ricanes. From 2003-2006, Mrs. Hunt
participated in the Florida VOAD as
state Red Cross liaison, represent-
ing all 20 chapters, and providing
vital information to state and feder-
al agencies and non-profit organi-
zations responding to the 2004 and
2005 hurricanes.
Her work brought her to Palm
Beach when she was named chap-
ter solutions manager for the Amer-
ican Red Cross National Headquar-
ters. She partnered with the Greater
Palm Beach Area Chapter and oth-
ers, supporting chapter staff and
volunteers through hurricane
responses, expansion of Health
and Safety programs and volunteer
development.
Hunt helped rewrite training
courses and became sought after
as an expert presenter at various
American Red Cross conferences
and training meetings.
"My life is typical of that of many
Americans, with the Red Cross
woven throughout generations,
and throughout stages of my own
history," says Hunt. "I have had
many opportunities to get to know
the board, volunteers and staff at
this chapter, and I am looking for-
ward to diligently responding to the
needs of this community."
In addition to her above posi-
tions, Hunt is also an experienced
disaster responder, and assisted
those displaced in Florida by the rav-
aging hurricane seasons in 2004 and
2005. She also responded in New
York City in the aftermath of 9/11.
In 2003, she received the Partner-
ship Award from the American Red
Cross of Greater Miami & the Keys
for her services in the Stockings for
the Troops program, which provid-
ed holiday packages for thousands
of service members overseas.
About the Red Cross
The American Red Cross is a
humanitarian organization led by
volunteers who provide relief to vic-'
tims of disaster and help people
prevent, prepare for and respond to
emergencies. For more than 80
years, the American Red Cross
Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter,
which includes Glades, Hendry,
Okeechobee and Palm Beach
Counties, has been providing shel-
ter for families during a hurricane,
flood or fire, and teaching First Aid,
CPR, AIDS Prevention and Water
Safety.

Syble's Flowers & Gifts turned their wedding chapel into Santa's Workshop. Terry
and Maureen Burroughs, owners of Syble's, provided the space needed by My
Aunt's House "The Closet" to distribute Santa's gifts to children of Okeechobee.
With the help from many sponsors: Toys for Tots and Children's House Society, My
Aunt's House provided Christmas to 289 Okeechobee children. We want to send a
special thank you to everyone who sponsored a childrenn, or a family, who donated
gifts, or provided money to purchase gifts for children who did not have a sponsor.
Standing among the donated toys are: (front to back) Judy Watts, Reba Folsom and
Maureen Burroughs. My Aunt's House's volunteers not pictured are Janet Berry and

Tax

fili

WASHINGTON The Inter-
nal Revenue Service today began
a busy 2007 filing season that
features telephone excise tax
refunds, a new refund deposit
feature and recently enacted tax
breaks that may require extra
attention from taxpayers.
"Taxpayers will have a num-
ber of new tax benefits and fea-
tures available this year," IRS
Commissioner Mark W. Everson
said. "We encourage taxpayers
to take a few minutes to review
these changes, particularly those
involving the recently enacted
tax law provisions. The IRS will
do everything it can to minimize
the impact on taxpayers."
This week, the agency is
sending 17 million 1040 tax
packages for 2006 to taxpayers
who have previously filed paper
returns. The number of paper
tax booklets being mailed to
Americans continues to decline
as more people opt for electron-
ic filing. The IRS expects to
process about 136 million indi-
vidual tax returns for 2006, with
more than half of those filed
electronically.
Among the major changes
taking place this year:
Telephone Excise
Tax Refund
Individual taxpayers will be
able to request a refund if they
paid the federal excise tax on
long-distance or bundled serv-
ice. The government stopped
collecting the federal excise tax
on long-distance service in
August and announced plans to
provide refunds of these taxes
billed after Feb. 28, 2003, and
before Aug. 1, 2006. More than
146 million individual taxpayers
are expected to request the
refund.
To request the refunds, tax-
payers have several options:
Individual taxpayers can
request the refund by using the
standard amounts, which are
based on the total number of
exemptions claimed on the 2006
federal income tax return.
Choosing the standard amount
saves taxpayers the time and
trouble of digging through 41
months of old phone bills. The
standard amounts are $30 for a
person filing a return with one
exemption, $40 for two exemp-
tions, $50 for three exemptions
and $60 for four or more exemp-
tions. For example, a married
couple filing a joint return with
two dependent children (for a
total of four exemptions) will be
eligible for the maximum stan-
dard amount of $60. To get the
standard amount, eligible indi-
vidual taxpayers will fill out an
additional line on their regular
2006 1040 return. (Line 71 on
Form 1040; Line 42 on Form
1040A; Line 9 on Form 1040EZ.)
Alternatively, individual tax-
payers who want to request a
refund of the actual amount of
tax paid should figure that
amount using Form 8913 and
report it on their income tax
return.
Businesses and tax-exempt
organizations can also request a
refund under a different proce-
dure; more information is avail-
able at IRS.gov.
New 1040EZ-T Form
For people who don't need to
file a regular tax return, the IRS
has developed a special, shorter
form to allow them to request
the telephone refund. Copies of
the Form 1040EZ-T will be avail-
able on IRS.gov, over the phone
and at a variety of other loca-
tions. The IRS encourages peo-
ple who qualify for the 1040EZ-T
to file electronically through the
Free File program, which will be
available for free beginning later
this month. More than 10 million
taxpayers who aren't normally
required to file a tax return may
be able to use this new form.
Taxpayers can either claim the
standard amount on this form or
attach a Form 8913 to claim
actual amounts.
Recent Tax
Law Enactments
The IRS is taking a number of
steps to help taxpayers get the
information they need to take
advantage of tax law provisions
enacted in December after IRS
forms went to print.

This new legislation affects a
number of areas of tax law, but
the most significant effect on
individual taxpayers involves the
deductions for state and local
sales tax, higher education
tuition and fees, and educator
expenses.
Taxpayers can visit IRS.gov
for updated information on the
late legislation. The IRS will con-
duct a special mailing of Publica-
tion 600, which will include the
state and local sales tax tables

ng seas'
and instructions for claiming the
sales tax deduction on Schedule
A (Form 1040), to 6 million tax-
payers who also receive the 2006
Form 1040 package this month.
For taxpayers using a paper
Form 1040, they will have to fol-
low special instructions if they
are claiming any of the three
deductions. The key paper 1040
Forms went to print in Novem-
ber, so taxpayers will have to
make special notations to claim
the deductions if they use these
paper forms. Specific details are
available on IRS.gov. For people
using IRS e-file or Free File, tax
software will be updated to
include the three key tax provi-
sions, and e-file will get the
refunds to taxpayers faster than
paper returns.
"As we always do, we encour-
age taxpayers who think they
may claim these deductions to
file electronically," Everson said.
"They will get their refunds
faster through e-file. Even more
importantly, e-file will greatly
reduce the chances for making
an error compared to claiming
the deductions on the paper
1040."
The IRS will not be able to
process tax returns claiming any
extender-related deductions
until early February. All other
returns can be filed and
processed as normal. Whether
claiming an extender provision
or not, the IRS notes that using
IRS e-file is the most accurate to
file any return and the quickest
way for taxpayers to receive their
refunds. Based on filings last
year, only about 930,000 tax
returns claimed any of the three
extender provisions by Feb. 1.
New Split Refund Option. For
the first time, taxpayers can split
their refunds among up to three
accounts held by up to three dif-
ferent U.S. financial institutions,
such as banks, mutual funds,
brokerage firms or credit unions.
To split their direct-deposit
refunds among two or three dif-
ferent accounts or financial insti-
tutions, taxpayers should com-
plete the new Form 8888, Direct
Deposit of Refund to More Than
One Account. Taxpayers can
also continue to use the direct
deposit line on the Forms 1040
to electronically send their
refunds to one account.
Free File Improvements

The free electronic filing pro-
gram begins later this month fea-
turing improvements to benefit
the 93 million taxpayers 70
percent of all taxpayers who
qualify for the program. Free
File, a partnership between the
IRS and the private sector Free
File Alliance, is available for tax-
payers who earn $52,000 or less.
This year, the program features
an agreement by private sector
partners to remove Refund
Anticipation Loans (RALs) as
well as other ancillary offerings
from the program.
IRS.gov, E-file
Helps Taxpayers
Given the large number of
changes this year, there are sev-
eral easy options for taxpayers to
turn to for help. IRS.gov will
have information on all the tax
changes and new features this
year. Key features include:
1040 Central. This is a one-
stop online shop for people
hunting key forms, looking for
what's new in the tax code and
answers to frequently asked
questions.
Where's My Refund? Once
taxpayers file their tax return,
they can track their refund

LICEI ISE #CPC14l5 75

on kicks off with new features

through the online tool
"Where's My Refund?" at
IRS.gov. Taxpayers will need
some of the exact information
from their tax return in order to
use the tool. Access this secure
Web site to find out if the IRS has
processed the tax return and
sent the refund.
Filing electronically will pre-
vent problems for many taxpay-
ers sorting through this year's
changes. With IRS e-file, taxpay-

ers can get their refunds in half
the time of filing a paper tax
return and receiving a refund
check, even faster with direct
deposit. IRS computers also
quickly and automatically check
for errors or other missing infor-
mation, making e-filed returns
more accurate and reducing the
chance of getting an error letter
from the IRS.

place, this is a good year for

Taxpayers consistently give

Wall named 'Woman of the year in agriculture'

TALLAHASSEE Florida
Agriculture Commissioner
Charles H. Bronson has
announced that Iris Pollock Wall
of Indiantown has been selected
to receive the "Woman of the
Year in Agriculture" award for
2006.
"Iris Wall is a lifelong cattle-
woman and rancher and a tal-
ented businesswoman," Bron-
son said. "She is a living
representative of the history of
agriculture in our state. She
spent her youth cowhunting,
and over the years established a
number of successful business-
es and became a leader in her
community and her industry."
The award, now in its 22nd
year, recognizes women who
have made outstanding contri-
butions to Florida agriculture. It
is sponsored by the Florida
Department of Agriculture and
Consumer Services and the
Florida State Fair Authority.
Bronson is scheduled to present
the award to Wall on Feb. 8 dur-
ing the opening-day luncheon at
the Florida State Fair in Tampa.
Tickets for the event are avail-
able by calling the fairgrounds at
1-800-345-3247.
A fifth-generation Floridian,
Iris was born in 1929 in
Indiantown. She spent most of
her childhood on the back of a

horse, cowhunting with her
father or just riding for the fun of
it. During the 1940s, when the
screw worm was at its worst,
she rode every day, roping her
family's cows and calves and
"doctoring" them with medicine
she carried in her saddlebags.
In 1948, she married Homer
Wall, her high school sweet-
heart, and they started a family,
which eventually grew to
include three daughters. Today,
Iris owns a sprawling ranch and
six lumberyards, but she and
Homer started with nothing
except an eagerness to work.
They began their life together in
the Everglades, hunting alliga-
tors and cutting fence posts.
They made their living fencing
other people's ranches, living
frugally and putting money aside
to buy their own land.
They were soon able to start a
small cattle and timber opera-
tion, High Horse Ranch, located
just outside of Indiantown. Over
the years it grew and prospered.
Iris has always been a. good
steward of her land and has
worked with her local forest
service, water districts, county
extension office, and farm serv-
ice agency to ensure the best
management of the ranch's
resources. She still rides through
the pastures and hammocks

almost daily and offers tours to
school and civic groups. The
tours often include a big barbe-
cue and lots of storytelling about
Florida in the old days.
Iris and Homer got into the
lumber business in 1962, when
they partnered with their friends
Jack and Fay Williamson to open
W&W Lumber in Indiantown.
After three years the
Williamsons sold the Walls their
half of the business. W&W Lum-
ber thrived, and today it has
expanded to include locations in
West Palm Beach, Jensen
Beach, Okeechobee, Lake
Placid and Sebring.
A ranch and a flourishing
lumber business might be
enough to keep most people
busy-but not Iris. In the early
1970s, Homer and Iris pur-
chased and restored the historic
Seminole Inn, where her mother
once worked as a cook. The inn
was built in 1926 by S. Davie
Warfield, a Baltimore financier
who dreamed of turning
Indiantown into a railroad hub
until his plans were dashed by
the Great Depression. The inn is
one of the few reminders of
Indiantown's boom years in the
twenties, and Iris and Homer
intended their careful restora-
tion of the landmark to be their
gift to the city. Today, the inn is

filled with period antiques and
serves authentic Southern food
in its dining room. It was recent-
ly named one of Florida's top 20
inns by the St. Petersburg Times,
and is listed on the National Reg-
ister of Historic Places.
Preserving the best of "old
Florida" is a passion for Iris. She
serves on the board of the Flori-
da Cracker Cattle Association
and the Florida Cracker Horse
Association, and is dedicated to
conserving these rare old breeds
as living links to Florida's histo-
ry. She often hosts the Cracker
Horse Association's annual
meetings at High Horse Ranch,
treating everyone involved, her
friend Nelson Bailey says, "to
generous helpings of genuine
old-style Southern hospitality
and food." Iris keeps a herd of
Cracker cattle on the ranch and
still rides a Cracker horse.
Iris is also an active member
of the Florida Cracker Trail Asso-
ciation, a non-profit dedicated to
preserving Florida's cattle and
horse heritage and to providing
an east-west greenway from
Bradenton to Fort Pierce. Each
February she participates in the
group's annual cross-state
horseback and wagon ride,
telling stories around the camp-
fire about her cowhunting days
and helping to keep Florida's

history alive. As her friend David
Reed, president of the Cracker
Trail Association, says, "With a
gentle ease, she delivers us into
the old world of woods, cows,
camps, rare nights in town, and
long, lonely months on the
prairie. Were it not for the partic-
ipation of people like Miss Iris,
who actually lived the life grow-
ing up, it would be far more diffi-
cult, if not impossible, to pro-
mote our purpose."
Iris took part in the Great
Florida Cattle Drive of 1995,
which celebrated Florida's 150th
year of statehood. She was part
of a group of cattle ranchers,
farmers, and historians who
drove 1,000 head of Cracker cat-
tle across the state in a historical
reenactment of Florida's 19th
century cattle drives. In 2006, Iris
helped to organize a second cat-
tle drive, this time to benefit the
Florida Agricultural Museum,
and she rode again, at the age of
77, accompanied by family and
friends.
Iris is a member of the Florida

Cattlemen's Association and the
National Cattlemen's Associa-
tion. She was recently elected to
the board of the Martin County
Farm Bureau and has been
inducted into the Florida Cracker
Hall of Fame.
Iris Pollock Wall lives in
Indiantown, where her authen-
tic Cracker tales have put her
much in demand as a speaker
and storyteller. Her beloved hus-
band, Homer, died in 1994, but
she is surrounded by her chil-
dren, grandchildren, great
grandchildren, and many
friends. Today, her daughters
and sons-in-law manage the
family lumberyards and the inn,
which is just wonderful, Iris
says. The arrangement leaves
her with plenty of time to devote
to her first love; High Horse
Ranch.
