Good things come to those
who wait.
That could be the motto of
Jerry Bryant who was sworn in
on Friday afternoon, Jan. 5 as
Okeechobee County Judge. It was
the fulfillment of a dream Judge
Bryant has had for over 20 years.
Judge Bryant, who said it was
his dream to be elected county
judge ever since graduation from
law school, finally made it after at
least two unsuccessful attempts.
Flanked by judges from the
Nineteenth Judicial Circuit and
other county judges, he was
administered the oath of office by

Senior Judge William Hendry in a
packed courtroom at the Okee-
chobee County Judicial Center.
An overflow crowd watched
the ceremony from another room
through closed circuit television.
In his opening remarks, Chief
Judge William Roby, who
presided over the ceremony, paid
tribute to Judge Bryant's Marine
Corps service. He noted that the,
Marine Corps motto is Simper
Fidelis 'always faithful'. He stat-
ed that Judge Bryant would be
required to be ever faithful in fol-
lowing the spirit and the letter of
the law. He noted that Judge
Bryant had served his nation,
state and local community.
"Judge Bryant we look to you
to be ever faithful."
"I am certain you will accom-
plish great things"
Special Magistrate William
Selmi, who has practiced law
with the judge for many years,
described him as "skillful,"
"polite", "ethical" and "thor-
ough".
Mr. Selmi said that his dad told
him the highest calling for which
one could aspire was to be a
lawyer.
He said his father was wrong,
"I have no doubt in my mind
that being a judge is the highest
calling there, could be."

During the great depression in
the 1930s, jobs were scarce or
non-existent. Under President
Franklin D. Roosevelt, work was
sponsored by the federal govern-
ment to provide jobs. For
instance, the Civilian Conserva-
tion Corps, which built the early

the Herbert Hoover Dike around
Lake Okeechobee and replanted
many of Florida's forests. In addi-
tion, the Federal Writer's Project

government under a program
called the Works Progress
Administration (WPA).
President Roosevelt, in his
wisdom, realized that like many
others, writers and artists were
out of work. The resulting collec-
tion of transcribed accounts of
life in the United States before the
Great Depression stands, waiting
for readers in the Library of Con-
gress today.

taken from an interview with
Mary Brennan Burrell, written
down by Bertha A. Comstock on
December 16,1938.
Mary's family came to South
Carolina from England and then
to Madison County in North Flori-
da before the Civil War. The
account states that she was 78
years old in 1938 when she told
this story.
Mary met John Burrell, a cit-
rus grower from Manatee while
visiting in Fort Myers. Eventually,
they married. Mary and John
lived in Fort Myers for five years
and their oldest son, Wilbert, was
born there.
John bought land down in the
edge of the Big Cypress and built
a 'cracker house' for them on
foundation poles of cypress. The
open corridor had rooms on
each side; a porch was built
across the front and then a rear
porch for 'doin' the work'. It was
wilderness.
When the Burrells arrived at
their new home down on the
edge of the Big Cypress, twenty-
four miles away from Fort Myers,
there was nothing there save
some very good soil, which had
the makings of a good garden
and fine grove. Four times a year
the Burrells went over the old
wagon trail to Fort Myers, to "lay
in" supplies. Every three months
the trip had to be made to bring
back supplies; cornmeal, bacon,
molasses, rice, maybe some
cloth or shoes. In fact, all food

you had to just trust God and the

Kerdyk
Bowled
Over
As I sit and write this column,
I'm listening in the background to
what must be my tenth bowl
game. I'm anxiously awaiting the
National Championship (Go
Gator's!). The PGA Tour kicks off
another season this week in Maui.
However, last weekend, just down
the highway, at the legendary Bilt-
more in Coral Gables, there was a
bowl game of another kind being
contested. While many Floridians
played, none were Hurricanes. This
bowl-game was the 43rd Junior
Orange Bowl Golf Championship.
The locals fared well, but
favorite Peter Uilein from Braden-
ton was edged-out by California's
Shiwan Kim who calmly sank an
eight-foot birdie putt on the 72nd
hole to claim the championship by
a single stroke.
Breezy conditions and tight pin
positions had players on defense-
strategy and it was eleven holes
before Kim made a birdie, immedi-
ately followed by a bogey. Uihlein
birdied his opening hole but he
also gave one back at the 2nd so
with no charges from the rest of the
field, the closing holes became a
head-to-head battle.
The soon-to-be champion dou-
ble-bogeyed the par-three 14th to
give Uihlein a two-stoke advantage
with four to play but thereafter
Kim's tenacity was unmatchable.
He birdied the tough.par-five 15th
;into the wind, followed .up with
another deadly birdie putt to draw
level, then retook the lead at the
17th when Uihlein failed to save
par.
Both birdied the final hole but
for Uihlein, also runner-up in 2005,
it was a bitter disappointment. "Shi-
Fairways and
Highways
by Daniel Shube
wan and 1 have played a lot togeth-
er and I know he's a really tough
competitor. I thought it might be
my day when I hit a 230-yard 3-
wood at the first close, but after that
I didn't make the putts when it mat-
tered," Uihlein said.
"I only hit six greens in regula-
tion," Kim said ruefully, "but my
putter saved me all the way. I knew
it would be the toughest of the four
rounds with the wind and the very
fast greens, so I tried to stay patient,
even after my double. I'm obvious-
ly delighted with the way it worked
out for me at the end." Kim's final
round of even-par 70 closing round
gave him a four-day total of 273, 11-
under par.
On the girl's side, Maude Aimee-
LeBlanc of Quebec City won by a
three-stroke margin over Mel-
bourne's Vicky Hurst. Aimee-
LeBlanc was overcome with relief:
"Did I win, honestly? That's so
great! It was a really tough struggle
today, hard pins, the wind. I just
kept telling myself that it was diffi-
cult for everyone, so keep on try-
ing, every shot, and every hole."
Hearing how excited these kids
are to compete is extremely
refreshing. At this week's Mercedes
Championships, an event that is
only open to winners during last
year's PGA Tour, several of the top
players were no-shows. In Maui no
less! I hope these youngsters make
it big and don't forget what a thrill it
is to be invited and to compete!
five miles east of U.S. 441 N.
Proceeds from the event will go
to the Children's Miracle Network.

Program aims to
develop future
agriculture leaders
Gainesville As the New Year
begins, 26 agricultural producers
from North, central and South
Florida will embark on a two-year
program designed to position
them as future leaders of the
state's agricultural community.
About six times a year they will
interact with Florida Farm Bureau
staff and leaders, legislators, regu-
lators and other producers from
Florida and other parts of the
nation, getting practical experi-
ence in leadership. Ben and April
Butler of Lorida and Trey White-
hurst Ill of Okeechobee are among
this new class.
Ben is responsible for the daily
operation and management of
Butler Oaks Farm, Inc., a dairy
farm in Okeechobee. The farm is
owned by his parents, Bob and
Pam Butler. It has 1,000 lactating
cows, 150 dry cows and 800
heifers on 1,400 acres nestled in
the Kissimmee River Valley. Butler
Oaks Farm has participated in
numerous environmental pro-
grams. The farm has 16 full-time
employees.
April grew up in Tallahassee,
was an active FFA member, and
received a degree in criminology
from Florida State University. Ben
and April were married in April
2006.
Trey Whitehurst is the owner of
ROW III A Consulting, which serv-
ices citrus crops and commercial
sod, a sales representative for
Helena Chemical Co. and a sales
associate for Florida Inland Realty,
Okeechobee. He earned his Bach-
elor of Science degree in food and
resource economics at the Univer-
sity of Florida and lists as his major
interests production agriculture
(winter vegetables, citrus, beef cat-
tle and commercial sod), and agri-
cultural real estate. He serves on
the board of directors of the UF
CALS Alumni and Friends and on
the board of directors of the Okee-
chobee County Farm Bureau. Trey
and his wife, Ginger, have a nine
month old daughter, Hadley.
The group comprises the latest
class in the Florida Farm Bureau
Federation's Young Farmer and
Rancher Leadership Group, a pro-
gram for rising leaders between
the ages of 18 and 35.
"Farm Bureau's success can be
traced to the exceptional leader-
ship found among its active farmer
members" said John Hoblick,
who in October was elected presi-
dent of the Federation. "In order
for the organization to maintain
this heritage, it is vital for new lead-
ers to be developed to guide the
organization in the future."
Hoblick, a Volusia County fern
producer, is himself a product of
both the YF&R Young Farmer and
Rancher Program and the Wedge-
worth Leadership Group.
The other new members of the
YF&R Leadership Group are:
Stephen and Tracie Fulford of
Monticello, Bryan and Wendi Jen-
nings of White Springs, Charlie
and Kelli Hofer of Ocala, Justin and
Kelly Mosley of Middleburg, Clay-
ton and Erin Archey of Oviedo,
Kyle Story of Babson Park, Maurice
and Leslie Turgeau of Lee, Josue
Aponte of Ft. Myers, Jason McK-
endree of Brandenton, Trey White-
hurst III of Okeechobee, Ben and
April Butler of Lorida, Roland Yee
of Port St. Lucie, Weston and Leslie
Pryor of Moore Haven, Lucas and
Kendra Killam of Jay and Ben and
Jamie Ellison of Pace.
In addition to the Leadership
Group, The Young Farmer and
Rancher program promotes three
contests designed to recognize
leadership and involvement. They
are the Outstanding YF&R Contest,
the Excellence in Agriculture
Award and the Discussion Meet.
Winners are announced at the
FFBF annual meeting each Octo-
ber.
The members of the YF&R
Leadership Group have commit-
ted to a two-year program. This
program offers educational, pro-
fessional and leadership develop-
ment, said Rachel Kudelko, the
FFBF staff member who coordi-
nates the program.

of the Secretary of the District. You may examine and/or obtain a copy of the District Engineer's
Report during normal business hours at 504 NW Fifth Avenue, Okeechobee, Florida 34972 and file

proposed First Amendment to the Plan of Improvements on or before the later of January 29, 2007

The Engineer's Report recommends or finds as follows:
(a) The estimated cost of construction of the improvements and provision of the servic-

So why do some banks act like you were?
You know when it comes to financial matters, there's no room for
fast talkers. You want experienced, local decision makers right
across the desk, and you want a response in a hurry. Oh, and you
also want convenient hours, handy locations and a person who
actually answers the phone. That seems perfectly reasonable to
us. Seems like you ought to come in to Seacoast.
