DEATH ROW: The U.S. ought to take note of what happened to
Saddam Hussein. If you get the death penalty, you should be put to
death within 30 days. The U.S. has people sitting on death row for 30
and 40 years Charles Manson, for example.

HONESTY: After driving back in town for the winter, I decided I
had better get propane for the grill. Checking my tank I was sure it
was empty and I went to a local business on U.S. 441 S. for the first
time. The lady inside was so nice as she took my money for the
propane. The gentleman at the tank filled my canister and as I
reached down to pick it up to go he reached into his pocket and
handed me a $5 bill. I asked him what it was for and he replied, "Your
tank wasn't empty." I assured him I had no way of knowing that and I
would never have known. To this he replied, "I don't like to be
gouged and I don't want to be guilty of gouging anyone else." I had
never met these folks but I want you to know I left there.not only feel-
ing great about them but also great to again know that there are a lot
of good, honest business people in this world. Thanks to the folks at
that business. You are a real credit to Okeechobee.

BADMOUTHING: This is in response to "No law" in the Viking
area. To the person who wrote the article, you need to find out your
information before you start badmouthing an area. You may be from
down south, but Miami is the biggest crime area there ever was. Acci-
dents are called accidents because they are not planned. People may
have been shot out there but look at Riviera Beach. If you don't like
living there please don't badmouth it for other people that do enjoy
it. If you haven't driven a four-wheeler, you need to try it sometime or
have somebody take you on an airboat or a buggy. The game com-
mission is out there and nobody is out there shooting all hours of the
day and night unless it might be your kids or somebody else's kids
with no better knowledge. And the roads, they might not be safe, but
they are not private. They are public. They are maintained by
Coquina Water District and all the people that own property out here
pay taxes to the county and Coquina maintains the roads and ditches
and theywork with the state in conjunction with the county.

PRAIRIE: This is in response to the Prairie. If you don't like it, leave
it. Property owners have rights too. Accidents are just that. As far as
the murder of that one man, we are sorry he passed on but they did
catch the person. We have no control over what they did nor do we
have any control over your thoughts or your actions. You seem to be
paranoid. If you live out there you should be more concerned about
snake bites, spider bites, scorpion bites or even bee stings. Maybe
you don't see the law, but do something wrong and they will have
you in jail real fast. What are you going to do when a fire starts
because God has struck lightning? Whose fault is that? Who are you
going to blame? Please be a little bit nicer to your neighbors and quit
being paranoid. If you don't like your surroundings, you don't have
to be around it. Decisions don't make themselves.

CLONING: I have been reading in the news about the cloning of
cows and that we will probably not even know if were buying it,
meaning there is no difference? I am wondering what the cattle folks
around here have to say on this subject. Do any of our ranches have
plans to clone? My daughter goes to IRCC and she did a paper on our
resources. She discovered that it is projected that we will be in dan-
ger of not having enough food to go around, and they figure this will
be a big problem during our lifetimes. My personal view is that this is
why the U.S. is allowing cloning to take place.

CLONED BEEF: I don't think you'll ever see cattle cloned around
here. The majority of producers here are commercial cow-calf oper-
ations. Cloning is way too expensive and complex for the ordinary
rancher. The people that use cloning will be the pure bred operations
that want to maintain a specific bloodline or trait. They can clone an
outstanding bull and keep producing offspring long after he's dead.
Probably the only way cloned meat would be sold in the store would
be the offspring sired by a cloned bull. Cloned beef just for consump-
tion would likely cost $200 per pound to produce.

SAFE: The FDA gave preliminary approval Thursday, Dec. 28,
2006, to use neat and milk from cloned animals or their offspring.
Federal scientists found virtually no difference between food from
clones and food from conventional livestock. The government
believes "meat and milk from cattle, swine and goat clones is as safe
to eat as the food we eat every day," said Stephen F. Sundlof, director
of the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine. Meat and milk from the
offspring of clones is also safe, the agency concluded.

DEAD COWS: I fish the Rim Canal a lot and have noticed over the
last year that there are a lot of cows perishing in the pastures along
those canals. I know a stretch down near Indian Prairie where I have
seen at least eight cows that have perished for no apparent reason.
Two weeks ago I saw one perish right in front of me, it literally
dropped to the ground and sat there for 15 minutes on its hind quar-
ters and then just went over backwards into the water. I have thought
about trying to contact those ranchers and asking them if they have
noticed a reduction in their herd or maybe some regulatory agency.
This does not seem like a natural process to me since there are so
many in so short a time.

LOST CAMERA: One camera in a case was found at the Sports
Complex on Saturday, Dec. 29. (Editor's Note: If you lost your cam-
era, please call our office at (863) 763-3134 and we will put you in
touch with the person who found it.)

Winn-Dixie has successful Weddings

fundraiser for Toys for Tots

JACKSONVILLE Winn-Dixie
customers helped spread Christ-
mas cheer as they did their normal
grocery shopping during this holi-
day season. During a four-week
period leading up to Christmas,
Winn-Dixie customers donated
more than $37,000 to help the
Marine Toys for Tots Foundation
provide toys to parents unable to
afford gifts for their children. Winn-
Dixie jump-started the program
with a $25,000 donation.
"Cash donations go a long way
in helping us fill the gap between
the toys we receive as donations
and the toys that we have to pur-
chase," said Major Bill Grein, USMC
(Ret), vice president for Toys for
Tots. "Our mission is to make sure
every needy child receives a toy for
Christmas. We couldn't do that
without the tremendous help of cor-
porate partners like Winn-Dixie and
individual volunteers and donors."
During the four-week cam-
paign, which began on November
29 and ran through Christmas Eve,
customers at Winn-Dixie stores
throughout the Southeast could
designate an amount ranging from

50 cents to $50 to be added to their
grocery bills at the time of check-
out.
"This program gave our cus-
tomers an easy and convenient
way to donate while filling an
important need for Toys for Tots,"
said Terry Derreberry, director of
neighborhood marketing for
Winn-Dixie. "We were thrilled to
work with our customers and
make an impact for so many chil-
dren this holiday season."
The nationally recognized Toys
for Tots campaign is a 59-year
Marine tradition. Last year, the
Marines distributed more than 18.4
million toys to more than 7.5 mil-
lion children in 520 communities
throughout the country.
Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. is one of
the nation's largest food retailers.
Founded in 1925, the company is
headquartered in Jacksonville. For
more information, please visit

Spotlight on Okeechobee

Thank you everyone
This letter is to warn everyone,
you can't be too careful with can-
dles. I am an 80-year old "kid" who
was careless and learned the hard
way. On Dec. 6,1 went to the bath-
room and returned to my room to
find my recliner engulfed in flames.
In what took years to complete
was destroyed in an hour or so. I
immediately called 911 and it could
have been much worse without
their quick response.
Deputy Paul Jackson was there
in five minutes and helped me and
my two dogs get out of the house.
Donnie and all the fire rescue peo-
ple and fire department came. My
kids returned in five minutes and
were so happy to find my animals
and me all okay. The Red Cross also
came that night to help. Thanks to
the good Lord and everyone's help,
we will be okay.
I lost my home in the 2004
storms and was so happy with
what my kids did for me. The insur-
ance adjuster said we would be
back in six months. That's not long
if you say it fast. In my case, life
begins at 80. I found getting old
ain't for sissies.
What a wonderful town we live
in! The doctors are helping me get
new teeth, glasses and a hearing
aid. I lost pretty much everything,
but my faith. I still have my loving
family and many friends.
Oh, I can still have candles. I just
can't burn them!
Thanks again everyone,
Ms. Edwina "Eddie" Carter
Thank you, Okeechobee
The Salvation Army says thank
you to Okeechobee. As always, the
good comes out for a good cause.
This year, the "Bell Ringer" volun-
teers were at their stations ringing
to bring in the needed funds for

Okeechobee's neediest. Although
we did not meet last year's post
hurricane season's collection, we
came close. It is not too late to still
send your donation to Okeechobee
Units Kettle Drive, P.O. Box 1702,
Okeechobee, Fla. 34973 or call 863-
763-6020.
Sincerely,
Kip Gardner
Thank you Wal-Mart
Some stood absolutely expres-
sionless, some trickled tears, others
embraced with a never let me go
embrace, and all were deeply
touched.
Lives of emptiness and broken-
ness were, for a moment, filled
with hope. Someone remem-
bered. Someone still cares.
Thank you, personally and in
their behalf.
Local pastor, Joe Bishop

Habitat House
Habitat for Humanity of Okeechobee County has begun construction of its second house
in Basswood. In the first two days of building we have framed up all the walls, set the
trusses and sheathed the exterior. Even a little rain didn't slow down these intrepid vol-
unteers. A special thanks to R. Mossel Construction for providing the crane to fly the
trusses into position and Brandon Baily and Jimbo Hodges for directing the crane work.
We've had over 20 volunteers each day and they are each a blessing. Marc and Jamie
Rediker have been there alongside the volunteers helping to build their house. Several of
their family members have also come to help see this dream come true. The Swinfords
and Pat Hall have provided excellent food and drink for the volunteers to keep them going
strong. Our next big build day will be on Jan. 6 starting at 8 a.m. Please join us in this
labor of love for a deserving family.

Ad Litem program
needs volunteers
This year, hundreds of kids on
the Treasure Coast will be
abused, neglected or aban-
doned. If you have as little as two
hours per week, then you can
help. Guardian Ad Litem volun-
teers are needed to speak up for
these children. Training for new
volunteers will be held in your
area soon. Volunteers are need-
ed in St. Lucie, Indian River, Mar-
tin and Okeechobee counties.
Call the Guardian Ad Litem pro-
gram at (772) 785-5804 for infor-
mation and an application. Just
two hours of your time each
week will make a difference in
the lives of these children.

Center offers parent-
ing classes
The Pregnancy Resource
Center, 1505 S. Parrott Ave.,
Suite D, offers a continuous ten-
week free parenting class on
Monday from 7 until 8 p.m. at
New Endeavor High School, 575
S.W. 28th St. The school is locat-
ed across the street from Osceo-
la Middle School. For informa-
tion, call Al Jaquith at (863)
462-5000, ext. 282, or (863) 763-
0437.

Foster parents
desperately needed
Okeechobee is in desperate
need of people willing to provide
foster children a normal family
life with nutritious meals, good
daily care and a stimulating envi-
ronment. Foster parents may be
married, divorced or single.
Their most important character-
istic is that they are caring indi-
viduals who understand the
problems and needs of foster
children. For information call
(800) 403-9311.

EYDC needs
volunteers
Volunteers do make a differ-
ence. This statement is proven
daily by hundreds of private citi-
zens who, as volunteers, enter
juvenile justice programs
throughout the state. The Eckerd
Youth Development Center
(EYDC) needs you to share your
skills or special talents in making
a difference in the lives of trou-
bled youth. Volunteers are need-
ed as tutors, translators, arts and
crafts instructors, mentors, job
preparation and search instruc-
tors, recreation aides and assis-
tance in developing a youth
choir. Wouldn't you like to make
a difference? If so, please contact
EYDC, 7200 U.S. Hwy. 441 N.,
Okeechobee, Fl. 34972. (863)
763-2174, ext. 234.
