you placate the environmentalist in you, and
save money at the same time. According to a
study done by the UF, the average cost of a
funeral is over $6000, but may cost as little as,
$1000, or over $10,000. A funeral that is car-
ried out by the family, can be much less ex-
pensive.
In years past, it was not uncommon for a
persons family to take charge of their funer-
al when they passed away When grandma
shuffled off the mortal coil, her kin would
clean her up, make her presentable, and lay
her out in the parlor for the family to gather
round and say their goodbyes. Nowadays.
most of this is handled by a funeral home, as
many can't seem to undertake the task of
undertaking their loved-ones. A common
misconception, however, is that the hire of a
funeral director is required by law. Many
hospitals may tell you that they can only re-
lease the remains of your loved one to a fu-
neral director, but this is incorrect.
The confusion,comes from Florida Statute
382.006(1), which reads:.

"The funeral director or person acting as
such who first assumes custody of a dead
body or fetusshall...",
You see the difference that first line
makes? It used to say "funeral director or
person acting as such..." the new statute
says funeral director, period. Now, doesn't
that seem to mean that only a funeral direc-
tor can take charge of-one's mortal remains?
It sure does. However, if you have a look at
Florida Statute 382.002(8) you'll find this def-
inition of funeral director:
""Funeral director" means a licensed funeral
director or direct disposer licensed pursuant
to chapter 497 or other person who first as-
sumes custody of or effects the final disposi-
tion of a dead body or a fetus as described in
subsection (6)"
Which means that if you, as next of kin,
take charge of your loved ones remains, you
ARE the funeral director, and are authorized
to act as such.
The first thing needed to start with is a
death certificate. This document will gener-
ally be signed by a physician and will state
the cause of death, if known. A death certifi-
cate must be filed in the county that a person
died in within 5 days of their departure, and
must be filed before they can be buried.
Second, you will need a transporting and
disposition permit. This must be obtained
within 5 days of the death, before the burial,
and must be filed in the county that the per-
son will be buried in within 10 days. This i

We, the deadbeats?
According to some yo-yo by the name of Ban Ki-moon, the
SUnited States is a "deadbeat donor" to his organization. Like
we, as a nation, owe his outfit or something.
Did I forget to mention, the organization in question is the
'United Nations? And that the yo-yo in question holds the pres-
tigious office of Secretary-General? Not that either makes
much difference, just thought you might like to know. '
Sinceyou are probably an American citizen if yourEe'reading
S this,'perhaps you'd be interested in knowing what this pip-
squeak from South Korea is using as an excuse for calling us
"deadbeats." It seems he doesn't think we're paying our mem-
bership dues promptly enoi~gh. Our dues, by the way, come to
* 220 of the UN's total budget, even though we're only one of
192 member nations with the same one vote the other'191
have, and most of them vote against us when the UN is edin-
sidering a resolution. That's from a charter membership of 51i
in 1945; at the end of World War II. Since that time. the UN
has granted membership to places like Togo. Burundi and
' Mauritius. Never heard of them? Neither had I until I looked
up the membership list.
R IRemember the "one man, one vote" mantra during the civil
rights protests in the 1960's? It seemed reasonable then. and it
still does; however in the UN our country gets the same vote
as those places most of us have never heard of, and there are
not just states, but cities and counties here in Amierica with
larger populations than some UN member nations. But that
doesn't seem to bother those of the internationalist mentality.
There's something else that Ban Ki-moon ought to be thinking
about. He's from South Korea, or the Republic of Korea, as it
is formally designated. To his homeland's immediate north is
a country going by the improbable name of the Democratic
People's Republic of Korea, better known as North Korea.
'Following World War II, the Korean Peninsula was divided at
the 38th Parallel, with the Communist Soviet Union in charge
of the northern part and the Utfited States the southern half.
In 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea, and the United
States became involved in another conflict, the final result of
which was the re-establishment of the 38th Parallelas the
border. '
To this day, we keep a considerable security force in place to
ensure the survival of South Korea. Had we not gotten in-
volved in 1950 and had we not maintained a securt-ity force in
Korea ever since, Communist North Korea would own the .,
S whole peninsula. North Korea's current urohymenopteran-in-
charge is Kim Jong-il, an obnoxious little twerp who has un-
fortunately succeeded in acquiring a weapons-grade nuclear
capability, with which he seeks to intimidate neighboring
c countries both large and small. Considering these things, one
cannothelp wondering why the Secretary-General of the UN, "
being ftom South Korea, would have the audacity to insult the
nation that is keeping his intact. If we were to pull out tomor-
row, Ban Ki-moon's home real estate would be in more trouble
than a small pig at a pit bull convention.
I'm not suggesting that we should pull out of korea; we have
entirely too much blood and treasure invested in that place to
just let.a.belligerent Communist government take it over. But
by the same token, we should let Ban Ki-moon and his govern-
ment know that we expect a little respect for our efforts.
Where we should pull out is the UN. And since they're set up
in our country, an eviction notice would be very much in or-
der. I'm sure most of the members would be happier in Mauri-
tiuis, wherever that is.
Political tags such as royalist, communist,
Democrat, populist, fascist, liberal,
conservative, and SO forth are never basic
criteria. The human race divides politically
into those whb want people to be controlled
and those who have no such desire.

actually read Dr. Seuss'ABC without looking at
I Can Read With My Eyes Shut. (Although, I can'
Read With My Eyes Shut with my, eyes shut, it's
*my favorites.) This is going to make no sense to
who doesn't'know that Dr. Seuss has a book calle
Read With My Eyes Shut, but, oh, never mind.
Anyway, I told you all this' to explain why a weir
popped into my head the other day while I was %
Obama talk about removing George Bush's rule
funding for embryonic stem cell research. All I
was '"A person's a person no matter how
small." It's from Horton Hears a Who, a book
about an elephant who discovers a tiny little
world in a flower. 'Dr. Seuss has his liberal
,moments,'like in the Lorax, a childlike rant
about destroying the environment, but the
Horton books are teeming with good old con-,
servative values. (Maybe that's why Horton is-.
,n elephant? I never thought of that before.)
Horton Hatches an Egg is all about how Hor-
ton takes over sitting on an egg after a silly
bird (the poster child for bad, irresponsible pare
off on vacation and leaves him to raise the little
own. Horton promised the.wayward mama he w
her egg, and the book is all about being serious
promises. "I meant what I said and I said what I
elephant's faithful, 100%," Horton repeats const
big fan of Horton.
Our new president could take some promise-kee

questions of principles, val-
ues. and (yes) even God...on
network TV! Isn't there sup-
posed to be a federal law sep-
arating church and TV?
Beck has the audacity to in-
timate to his viewers that
maybe solutions to our prob-
lems can be based on princi-
ples, values, and belief in
God. In his blog on March

only in the media but in our
own discussions is the fact
that we concentrate too
much on the other guy"
What-kind of crazy talk is
that? Psychologically speak-
ing, that's counterintuitive.

making a difference for good

do.
Why don't the liberal MSM
care or cover what he's do-
ing? Obviously, progressives
cannot lead us forward if we
keep trying to go back to
that day of unity The pro-
gressives are in charge of
Washington and the MSM
for the foreseeable future,
That's politics.
But, Beck is raising an alter-
native to politics as usual.
He's asking America to re-
turn to her root values and
principles. What effect
would such a movement
have on national politics and
our economy, particularly if
it grows to significant num-
lbers of Americans?
We are witnessing a battle
for control of America be-
tween liberal progressives
on one side launching con-
tinuous smear campaigns
against conservatives, and
the rest of us wondering
how in the world we got to
where we are today.
When will this battle end?
Thomas Jefferson gives us a
clue: "The democracy will
cease to exist when you take
away from those who are
willing to work and give to
those who would not."

tion Commission (FWC) arrested three people in an al-
ligator poaching case last week in Glades County.
While on routine patrol, Officer Scott Van Buren and
Lt. Pam Steelman observed a pickup truck pulled
halfway off County Road 731, which is south of Rainey
Slough. There, they observed a man in a canal along
the road; he was retrieving an alligator. A woman was
in the bed of the truck, and a 17-year-old male stood
next to the truck. Upon inspecting the truck, officers
found three loaded rifles, four pieces, of fresh alligator
meat and two live hatchling alligators. The officers
found three butchered alligator carcasses near the
canal.
Three people -- Joshua J. Todd, DOB 10 12 90,., of Alva;,
Natalee M. drant, DOB 1/13/91, of 'Lehigh Acres: and a
juvenile -- were charged with seven misdemeanor
counts of taking and possessing American alligators.
All three were booked into the Glades County jail.
"We hope this case sends a strong message to would-be
wildlife poachers," Steelman said. "'We will find you ,
and hold you accountable for criminal acts."

Four South Carolina anglers on hook,
1,268fish seized
Friday the 13th proved unlucky for four South Carolina an-
glers when a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commis-
sion (FWC) officer seized their entire catch of 1,268 freshwa-
ter fish. The case is believed to be the largest of its kind ever
filed in Polk County by the FWC:
Veteran FWC officer Jim Adams received an anonymous tip
that led him to seize 1,264 shellcrackers, one warmouth, one
spotted sunfish and two undersize largemouth bass from the
group of out-of-state anglers fishing on Lake Kissimmee.
Each angler is allowed 50 panfish per day, with a maximum of
two days' bag limit in possession. Possession limit violations
are a second-degree misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up
to $500 and/or 60 days in jail .
Sam C. Shumpert, (DOB 01/01/42), of 1508 McNeil Drive, West
Columbia, SC, was charged with possession of 294 fish over
the legal possession limit.
Daniel Shumpert, (DOB 04/24/43) of 17 Dunbar Rd., West Co-
lumbia, SC, was charged with 294 fish over his legal posses-
sion limit.
Richard L. Richenbaker, (DOB 12/08/62), and his wife, Maura
R. Richenbaker, (DOB 11/28/62), 54 Rick Road, St. Matthews,
SC, were each charged with 340 fish over the legal possession
limit.
The four anglers had been fishing out of Grape Hammock
Fish Camp on Lake Kissimmee for three days. They told
Adams they had been coming to Florida to fish every spring
for a number of years and that fishing in South Carolina was
never as good as it was here.
"The FWC depends upon partnerships forged with conserva-
tion-minded sportsmen to ensure the future of our freshwa-
ter fisheries," Adams said. "Reports to the Wildlife Alert Hot-
line of potential violations are a key component of that part-
nership."
The FWC donated all of the fish to Natural Encounters in
Lakes Wales. The fish will provide a six-month supply of food
for the birds that Natural Encounters trains for Disney Pro-
ductions.

UNIT 383 Can Drive & Bake Sale
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 383, Old Town, will hold
another can drive to help the United Christian Services an-
swer the growing number of requests for help in'the com-
munity Non-perishable food items and common household
supplies are urgently needed by area families.
The Unit took their act on the road on Sunday, March 15th,
participating in the Adopt-a-Highway Program. Lillian
. Welkie, Shirley:Newnian, Leslie Henson, Betty Wickard,
and Jeri Gifford formed the Work crew, picking up thirty-
two bags of trash from a two-mile stretch of US Highway
i9 North's roadsides. Another Bake Sale will be held in
. front of Gail's Cafe on Saturday, April 4, and will start at,
8:00 AM, but check us out early if you want any brownies,
they go fast! The proceeds will go into the general fund.

Having the opportunity to be in church again Sunday was a
true blessing, as our choir operied the service with beauti-
'fully done hymnrs. As an added bolus, we were blessed
with some very fine singing and playing by Mr. Buroh Rev-
els...welcome back anytime, Bro. Buron! After this fine
start, Bro. Billy brought an outstanding message from God's
Word, choosing his text from Acts 26:9-15. giving all much
about which to think.
Our monthly Fellowship Supper is scheduled for Wednes-
day evening. March 18th, at the church annex. On Thurs-
day evening, Kimbo and Katrina VanAernam are having a
cookout for son, Bobby, and his bride-elect, Brandi Osteen,

March 10, 2009 at Grady General Hospital in Cairo, Ga.

How much more exciting can it be? As bad as things are in
this world (and getting worse) for the Christian believer our
hearts should be leaping with joy Jesus said, "When you
see these things beginning to come to pass, look up, for
your redemption (deliverance) draws very near."
While I am of the opinion that things will probably get
much worse before they get better I can see the love, mercy,

Rock Sink Baptist Church
was pleasantly surprised
last Sunday morning as the
entire morning service was
brought to us from our
youth group.
Bill-and Anna Allen are do-
ing an excellent job as lead-
ers of our youth, which are
6th grade and up.
Claire Curry and Ashlyn '
Huffman were music direc-
tor and led the congregation
and the all-youth choir in
singing.
We had special music from
the young quartet version of
the Rock Bottom Singers.
I'm sure we will hear more
from the "Little Rocks" as
they had a standing ovation!
They have already been
asked to perform at out 5th
Sunday Night Sing, coming
up on March 29th at 7:00
PM.

Burial at sea is a gener-
ally less sought-after
mode of disposition. It is,
however, legally accept-
able. There are special
rules and regulations re-
garding the disposition of
a persons mortal remains
by means of the ocean.
As with anything, check
local laws. The EPA states
.that on the west coast of
Florida, the area that a
body is interred must be
at least 3 nautical miles
from land, and at a depth
of at least 1800 feet. The
EPA requires notice of
said burial at sea within
30 days, and forms can be
found at:

A "Green" memorial park
called Ramsey Creek Pre-
serve is located near
Westminster, South Car-
olina, and is attracting
people looking for alter-
natives to traditional
burials. This "ecosys-
tem" accepts bodies in
:their natural state and
then returns them to the
earth, with trees planted
at the site to "draw the
last benefit of life from
the process of death."
So, there you have a
good outline of the legal
aspects of caring for your
loved ones after they de-
part. How about the eco-
friendly part? I'm sure
we're all familiar with
the 'Ashes to ashes. Dust
to dust" verse. The Bible,
in it's infinite wisdom,
pointed out that when
you die, your body is sup-
posed to return to the cy-
cle, becoming as nutri-
ents for plants. In most
modern funerals, graves
are lined with concrete,
vinyl, or other non-per-
meable material. The cas-
ket is manufactured var-
nished wood, metal, per-
haps some plastic, and
sealed tight. The body is
pumped full of toxic
chemicals to prevent de-
composition. How's a
body supposed to return
to the soil with all of
these barriers to natural
composting in place? It.
takes a while. A home fu-
neral, with a simple
wooden casket, will en-
sure that nature gets the
full benefit of the nutri-
ents that the dearly de-
parted no longer have a
use for. Planting a tree or
flowers over the grave
site is a beautiful way of
seeing immortality at its
best.
