When it rains, it pours.
Especially if you're a mem-
ber of the John and Chris-.
tine Lubin family Their
son Jacob was badly
burned in an bonfire acci-
dent in December. Jacob
suffered second and third
degree burns all over his
body, from his collarbone to
his ankles. Jacob is a
friendly thirteen-year-old
with a great sense of hu-
mor, even when he's in pain.
He's a student at Ruth Rains
Middle School. The Lubins
also have a sixteen year old
son John, who plays for the
DCHS J.V Basketball team.
Jacob was burned after
spilling gasoline on himself
and then getting too close to
a fire. He ran into the
house aflame, and his father
wrapped a comforter
around him to douse the
flames. Christine said that
the ambulance came and
quickly loaded Jacob. He
was in so much pain. "I
didn't know what to do but I
looked into his eyes and I
just kept saying 'Say the
name of Jesus' over and
over and over and he did.
But then I looked down and
saw his poor body; the skin
was just coming off of his
arms...and I just lost the
ability to speak. The para-
medic, I don't remember his
name, he saw that I couldn't
talk, and bless him, he just
took my place and kept
telling Jacob to keep saying
'Jesus" and I think that's the
only thing that kept him
from going into shock."
Jaey he& spent months re-
covering from the fire and
the :eight surgeries that have
been required. Just this
week, he was moved to
Shands at Vista Rehabilita-
tion. He's much happier
there: he has his own room,
and he's able to sleep more
soundly at night without all
of the hospital chaos. He
misses his pet chihuahua
horribly, and really wants to
go home. His parents hope
he'll be able to get out of
Vista in two or three weeks.
Jacob's parents are required
to be there with him for al-
most 12 hours each day, in
order to learn the skills they
will need so that he can fi-
nally come home. They've
learned to change his dress-
ings "in the dark," and
they're eager for him to be
discharged and return to
Dixie. They've been staying
at Ronald MacDonald House
in Gainesville, and driving
across town to North
Gainesville where Shands at
Vista is located every day.
The Lubins are of, modest
means, and drive a 20 year
old car that served their
needs, until Thursday On
Thursday, Mr. Lubin was on
his, way to see Jacob and
through no fault of his own,
was in a car accident and
their only transportation
was totalled. Now they have
no way to get back and forth
to complete the care that Ja-
cob requires. Shands at
Vista was very clear that if
the Lubins are not present
every day, that it could delay
Jacob's release significantly.
The insurance on the to-
talled car may net the Lu-
bins a couple of hundred
dollars; not nearly enough to
purchase a car. The family
is trying to find a car to bor-
row to get them through t h is
crisis, but haven't had much
luck yet.. The medical bills
are going to. reach astronom-
ical heights. Just having to
be in Gainesville all the
time causes serious finan-
cial strain for the family.
Even when Jacob gets to
come home to Old Town,
long his ordeal will not be
over. He will have to wear a
"pressure suit" for at least a
year, and he won't be able to
be out in the sunshine.
The Lubins are optimistic,
and are determined to do
the best they can for their
son. :'Never in my wildest
dreams, did- I think some,
thing like this could hap-
pen," Christine Lubin said,
"I just don't know what
we're going to do. We can
take care of him, we just
want him to be able to come
home." When asked if she'd
be happy to get her life back
to some sort of normal, Mrs.
Lubin replied with her head
high and a small quaver in
her voice, "This is our new
normal."

Houghton, the children will
still not be allowed to show
their animals because of
that technicality

the President. Comhmission-
er Johnson said, "I am a di-
rector on that board, and
what she says is true."
Commissioner Hunt agreed,
saying that "I'm not for tak-
ing anything away from the
kids."

Cross City
hiring new
officer
Monday evening's Cross
City Council meeting was
fairly uneventful. Council-
men Hurst and Gantt were
not present at the meeting,
and most serious business
was postponed until their
return.
Some discussion was made
of garbage issues within
the city limits, Communi-
com and it's refusalto pro-
vide High Definition chan-
nels to Cross City resi-
dents, and updates from
City Manager Mike Cas-
sidy on progress in water
testing.

Jones asked for permission
to advertise for a new Po-
lice Officer after the resig-
nation of Danny Forehand,
who is moving over to the
Dixie County Sheriff's Of-
fice. The next meeting is
February 23.

teams here in Dixie County for the last three years.
This year, in addition to sponsoring teams, he also do-
nated a pitching machine to help the kids
practice.
"Practicing with a pitching machine is one
of the best times in a kid's life, said Dr.
Martin, "It is the only time they'll ever get
consistent pitching."
We're sure the kids are looking forward to
to practicing with the new equipment.
The Varsity game started
shortly after the JV Game
on Saturday, and had a dif-
ferent feel to it, as it was Se-
nior Night in Dixie. Just be-
fore Tip-Off in the Varsity

score was all tied up at 4
apiece. The action picked up,
and the scoring stayed close
as Interlachen took a 31-26
lead into halftime. With 4:45
left in the 3rd, the Bears
quarter, they had closed the
gap, and the Rams' lead was
cut, and they only led by 3,
50-47 going into the final
quarter.
The 4th quarter was some of
the best 8 minutes of a game
I've seen played in a while.
With 6:17 left, the Rams led
52-50, and at the 3:25 mark,
they were winning 60-59 but
that soon changed. With 3
minutes left to go in the
game, the play went just
right, and Senior Tevin Hen-
derson raised everyone out
of their seats with a thun-
derous dunk, and the Bears
take the lead 61-60!
The scoring still stayed
close, as with 35.8 seconds
left in the game, the Rams
tied it up at 65. Oh My! The
crowd stayed on their feet
and continued to cheer on
the Bears. The game was re-
ally good, and well played.

CEO's in poverty and other things absurd
I was watching Glen Beck on the tube the other day, and he
had a printer barfing out the entire text of President Oba-
ma's bail-out bill. It took most of the program, and he
wound up with a stack of paper every bit as thick as. an
unabridged dictionary, or maybe even Harry Reid.
Like Mr. Beck and no doubt also all 535 members of Con-
gress and the President, I have not read the "stimulus pack-
age" in its entirety However, I have read enough to find so
many things wrong with it that I could not possibly deal
with even the most egregious of these in this limited space.
So instead, I will mention a couple of points that I actually
*liked.,
There was the part about specifying that recipients of this
taxpayer largess "Buy American." I thought that actually
made a bit of sense, at least to the extent that an occasional
rose growing in a compost heap could smell sweet.
Personally, I've always been a "Buy American" sort of guy,
but with the qualifier that buying American is best if you
can get what you'want and get it without paying a lot more
than its worth. Let's face it, if you refuse to buy foreign-
made goods these days, there are a lot of things you'll find
yourself doing without.
And yet, a lot of conservatives are complaining that we're
inviting an economically-crippling return to the isolation-
ism of the 1930s if we prioritize buying from American
manufacturers. That's nonsense. There's just too much im-
portant "stuff" that doesn't get made here anymore. Be-
sides, the economy is already crippled, and-it's not because
we've reinstated tariffs on imported goods, so maybe we
ought to be bringing more industry back into this country,
or at least hanging on to what we still have.
But not to worry, President. Obama has,already waffled on
the "Buy American" part. Sort of like what happened with
not wanting any lobbyists in his administration.
The other part of the package that I liked was the specifica-
tion that CEOs of corporations getting bailout handouts
couldn't be paid more than $500,000 a year. Not retroactive,'
mind you, just on new applicants, but it sounded like it was
at least moving in the right direction for a change.
A lot of working Americans resent the fact tha' CiOs often
get multi-million dollar salaries while they lay off workers
and then get huge bonuses when they are replaced after
running their companies into the red. And q lot of working-
class taxpayers would resent it even more ifi these'bozos
were gaining such largess at the expense of people who ac-
tually work for a living.
Fortunately for the President, he won't have to waffle on
this one. If someone is incompetent enough to run a major
corporation into the red, but was shrewd enough to get a.
job as its CEO in the first place, then he's not going to settle
for a measly half-mil a year just because a bunch of politi-
cians in Washington say he has to.
Look at it this way: A corporation can allow its top brass to
put no end of perks on the, old expense account. Hey, CEOs
deal with a lot of stress, don't they? So what's wrong with a
month or two, all expense, at a five star hotel in the Islands?
And the corporation certainly wouldn't want him driving a
98 Toyota; he needs a new Mercedes, and even the chauffeur
shouldn't have to pump the gas. Also, plenty of time to play
golf with board members from other corporations that
might want to give him his next job.
Just a couple of not too bad ideas that unfortunately don't
amount to much. Otherwise, I couldn't find anything that
was stimulating about the President's stimulus package,
but I'll keep looking....
Wait a minute; Obama says if we don't pass it right away, it
will be too late. No time to read all of it, or even most of it,
and that's a shame because there's a lot of money at stake.
After all, a trillion here and a trillion there, and pretty soon
you're talking about serious money

Obligatory Valntine's Day Essay

Valentine's Day is Saturday As you've probably already
guessed, I'm not a big fan. I prefer cheese to chocolate, I
hate love songs and poetry, and I'm probably the most un-ro-
mantic person in the universe. Lots of people (O.K., let's
'fess up here)....lots of women like it. But for me, it's one of
those holidays where you just have to sort of accept the in-
evitability of it and go with the flow. Besides, presents are
always good, right? Who I am to turn down presents?
If you ignore the day and don't do something, people look at
you funny, and lord help you if you're a man and you don't
buy.her something nice. You'd be better off not going home,
buddy. Doug and I will probably go catch a movie and
maybe have lunch. Then I'll ditch him and go do something
I really want to do, like spend two hours in Barnes and No-
ble and Hank's yarn store. Poor guy, he'd go and pretend to
have fun looking at yarn, because he's cool
that way, but I wouldn't do that to him. (Prob-
ably why we're still friends!) I don't und
I can't be the only one who thinks that Valen-
tine's Day is a silly exercise. I suspect that se-
cretly, most men agree with me that the whole
thing was a plot cooked up'by Hallmark. Here
they are, with months and months until Moth-
er's Day, and Christmas revenue come and
gone...they needed a money-maker to keep
them going until May. So we get stuck with
Valentine's Day on the 14th of every February.
#8 Regarding Henry. Harrison Ford stars as a go-getter guy
who takes a bullet in the head and loses his lifestyle and arm-
bition, but who gets his family back. This is good stuff. ,
#7. In Good Company. Great movie with Dennis Quaid as
40-something guy who finds out his wife is pregnant and
that his new boss is like 20 years old. His boss asks him how
he's stayed married so long, and he answers with what may
be the best line ever, explaining that what is important is to
pick a great person to be in the foxhole with, and then when
you're out of the foxhole, to keep your pants on. (He says it
in more colorful language, but this is a family publication.)
#6. Casablanca. Of course. Play it again, Sam.
#5. Always. This is an 80's movie with Richard Dryfuss,
who I really don't like, and Holly Hunter, who is just as cutp
as a button, and who, unlike most Hollywood actresses, has

After all, what does chocolate and flowers have
to do with love? You want to prove your undy-
ing love? Forget dropping $2.75 on a piece of cardboard that
sings and says I love you. Vaccuum the living room without
my having to.ask. Fold a load of clothes and put them away.
Put some danged toilet paper on the roll thingy for once. Am
I wrong, here, ladies? I think not.
One thing I do like is Valentine's Day movies. Seems like
TMC and TBS have the best ones, or maybe I'm just showing
my age. If you don't want to'go to Gainesville to the movies,
here are my recommendations for the best Valentine's Day
movies ever. (By the way, I haven't seen "Fireproof" yet, but
from what I hear, it should be on the list, too.)
#10 Jerry McGuire. I love this movie. Tom Cruise before he
went totally insane, and of course the "show me the money"
guy I like this movie because it's realistic romance, and be-
cause the cute little kid with the glasses who knows that
"the human head weighs eight pounds" looks exactly like
that smart little chicken kid that Foghorn Leghorn is always
hanging around witli '
#9 The Quiet Man. John Wayne. Maureen O'Hara. Ireland.
Need I say more? Really, any movie that claims to be a love
story and that ends with a brawl and the hero dragging the
heroine by her hair barefoot across a cow pasture has to be
great. I wanted to put McClintock on here, too, but I figured
if I had another movie that ended with a hair-dragging, tar-
and-feathering; dragging her through her underwear in
town and then spanking her butt in public scene, ya'll might
start to think that I'm a bit on the strange side. I just like
John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. And John Wayne and.
Katherine Hepburn. And John Wayne and...oh, heck, I just
love the Duke. -So sue me.

#4 Like Water for Chocolate. OK, it's al-
ort, chubby toddler most entirely in Spanish, which I know;

seem to be equally common.) It has gre t
food scenes, really bad knitting, and is
worth the subtitles. Es verdad.
#3 Heaven Knows, Mr Allison. Not exactly a typical ro-,
mance movie, but Robert Mitchum is just the most mascu-
line, manly man ever min the history of the universe and Deb-
orah Kerr plays a sweetly pretty nun. They're stuck on an
island together during WWII. Lots of romantic tension, but
not so much as a smooch. (She is a nun!! What did you
expect!?!)
#2 The Story of Us. Bruce Willis (you knew I was going to.
work him in here somewhere, didn't you?) and Michelle
Pfeiffer star in this too-real-for-comfort romantic movie.
They're married. They have kids. They think they hate
each other. They're miserable. They break up. They're mis-
erable. They get back together. They eat Chinese food. Hal -
py ending.
#1 Murphy's Romance. Quite possibly, my favorite movie of
all time. Cranky old James Garner and worn-out single -
mbm Sally Field finally get together in'this small-town flick.
He's an opinionated small-town widower and she has a
trashy, loser ex. I love, love, love this movie.
I'm sure I've missed more than a few. I wanted to include
Bed of Roses, The Lion in Winter, One Fine Day, A Walk in'
the Clouds, Camelot and The Princess Bride. All great
movies, but not as good as the first ten. If you think of
some better ones, let me know.
So after the chocolate's all gone, ditch your significant othor,
kick back on the couch and enjoy some real romance with a
great movie, and celebrate Valentine's Day however you
darned well please.. (But I'm serious about the toilet paper
thing, guys. Just put it on there! It's not that hard!)

Florida Mandatory Spay/Neuter Bill Introduced by Orlando Democrat

Legislation that seeks to,
prohibit persons from own-
ing or maintaining an intact
dog or cat older than four
months old has been filed in
the Florida House by Scott
Randolph, a democratic at-
,torriey from Orlando. If
adopted, Florida House Bill
451 would have a profound
negative impact not only on
responsible dog breeders in
Florida, but also on all cur-
rent and prospective dog
owners. It is vital that all
breeders and concerned dog
owners in Florida contact
their elected state legisla-
tors and voice their strong
opposition to this unreason-
able and unenforceable mea-
sure.
The American Kennel Club
opposes the concept of
breeding permits, breeding
bans, or the mandatory
spay/neuter of purebred
dogs. Instead, we support
reasonable and enforceable
laws that protect the welfare
and health of purebred dogs
and do not restrict the rights
of breeders and owners who
take their responsibilities
seriously. Additionally, we
strongly support and active-
ly promote a wide range of
programs to educate the
public about responsible
breeding practices and the
responsibilities of dog own-
ership.
As currently written, HB 451
would:
Require owners of every
dog or cat in Florida to have
each animal sterilized with-
in 30 days of the animal
reaching four months of.
age, or within 30 days of the
owner receiving the animal.
Provide ambiguous ex-
emptions, including dogs
with veterinary certification
showing that sterilization
would endanger the ani-
mal's health, until such is-
sues no longer exist; Grey-
hounds currently used for
racing, until retirement;
show animals registered
with an established breed
registration organization to
be approved by the Depart-
ment of Agriculture and
Consumer Services; dogs or
cats that have earned, or are
in the process of earning, a
competitive sports title; ani-
mals trained, or in training,
.for use in law enforcement,
military or rescue; and ani-
mals for which an owner
holds a valid breeding per-
mit issued in accordance
with an ordinance of a
county or municipality.
AKC believes that any at-
tempt at restricting the
rights and liberties of re-
sponsible breeders-espe-
cially via mandatory
spay/neuter laws-must be
defeated.
The Florida Legislature will
convene its session in early
March. As a recently filed
bill, HB 451 has not yet been
referred to a committee
within the Florida House of
Representatives. However, it
is important that all respon-
sible dog breeding and own-
ing Floridians write their
elected officials in Tallahas-
see now, respectfully ex-
pressing their strong opposi-
tion to HB 451, and asking
them to oppose the bill. This
will help ensure that the bill
will not be considered when
the legislature comes into
session.
The AKC Government Rela-
tions Department will con-
tinue to monitor the consid-
eration of HB 451 and will
notify the purebred dog
community when the bill is
assigned to a committee.
Contact information for
committee members will be
provided and purebred dog
owners should express their
opposition to HB 451 to com-
mittee members at that
time.
This bill will affect hunt-
ing dogs, purebred dogs
and cats, and mixed-
breed petsl
This is not an "animal wel-
fare" bill, but one intended
to profit a few exclusive dog-
breeders and to drive the
cost of family pets beyond
the reach of most families,
It would practically stop all
dog hunting.

Blast Hits Florida
TALLAHASSEE As agricultural producers begin as-
sessing freeze damage from the overnight Arctic blast
that impacted the state, Florida Agriculture and Con-
sumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson an-
nounced today that an executive order relaxing weight
limits on trucks transporting vulnerable crops has
been extended until February 25.
The order extending the waiver was signed last
evening by Governor Charlie Crist at Bronson's request
and enables growers to harvest more of their products
to prevent or reduce crop losses. The previous order
was schedule to expire February 11,
"We're thankful to Governor Crist for his effort in as-
sisting the agricultural community m quickly getting
their crops out of the ground," Bronson said. "Flori-
da's growers produce nearly all of our nation's domes-
tically produced fresh fruits and vegetables during the
winter months, and consumers throughout the country
rely on our crops."
Florida is at the peak of the harvest season for many
commodities, including citrus, strawberries, blueber-
ries, tomatoes, snap beans, celery, sweet corn, cucum-
bers, eggplant, peppers, radishes, squash, tropical fish
and nursery plants."
The emergency order signed by the Governor relaxes
the weight, height, length and width restrictions for
commercial vehicles transporting vulnerable crops.

About Jury Duty Scam
TALLAHASSEE Florida Agriculture and Consumer
Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson today
alerted consumers to a growing identity theft scam in
which con artists posing as courthouse workers claim
that the person being called has failed to report for jury
duty
The scam has been reported in 11 states, although it is
unclear whether it has surfaced in Florida, officials
say.
"If you get such a call, hang up and avoid providing
any personal or financial information over the phone,"
Bronson said. "Court workers don't call on the phone
to inform you that you've missed a jury duty sum-
mons."
The scam typically involves a call from a person claim-
ing to be a jury coordinator who informs the person be-
ing called that a warrant has been issued for his or her
arrest as a result of the person's failure to appear for
jury duty When the intended victim. protests and re-
ports thathe or she never received a summons to re-
port for jury duty, they are asked for a social security
number, a date of birth and sometimes even a bank ac-
count number.
Providing the information enables the scam artist to
clean out the consumer's bank account and open up
other accounts, obtain credit cards and establish other
lines of credit in the victim's name, Bronson warned.
"This is a particularly insidious fraud because most
people take jury duty seriously and naturally would
want to clear up any misunderstanding about whether
they failed to show up for it as quickly as possible,"
Bronson said. "Such a call would understandably upset
most people, especially with the threat of arrest, and
catch them off guard."
The scam has reportedly surfaced in New York, Min-
nesota, Illinois, Colorado, Oklahoma and other states
in recent years, and authorities are fearful that it may
be spreading.
It is yet another example of how con artists try to rip
off consumers.
"People need to always remember to avoid giving any
personal or financial information over the telephone to
anyone whose identity they have not verified," Bronson
said.

JV Bears lose heartbreaker
On February 6th, the JV and
Varsity .teams played host to
the Bulldogs of Taylor Coun-
ty The JV Bears took to the
court, and got the night
started. With 2:45 to go in the
1st quarter, the Bears held
on to a small lead, 7-4 over
the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs
played hard and came back
to tie it up at 9 at the end of
the 1st. the Bears continued
to play hard, and at halftime,
the Bulldogs had the lead 19-
16. the Bulldogs continued to
hold their lead, but the
Bears refused to give up eas-
ily, Playing hard, the Bears
ran out of time and were de-
feated by the Bulldogs 56-34.
The Varsity Boys took to the
floor shortly after the JV
game, and played host to the
Bulldogs as well. The game
was a close one right up 'til
the end. At the end of the ist
quarter, the Bears were hold-
ing a 3 point lead over the
Bulldogs, 16-13. The Bulldogs
kept it close, as the Bears
still held on to a 3 point lead,
29-26 going into halftime.
The 3rd quarter showed just
what the previous 2 quarters
showed us, a really close
hard fought game as the.
Bears led 44-43 at the end of
the 3rd. the 4th looked just
as good, and the score got
closer between the 2 teams,
as the Bulldogs tied it all up
at 49 with 5:10 remaining.
With just 3 minutes to go in
the game,/the Bears man-
aged to pull back ahead of
the Bulldogs, by 5 points,
leading 56-51.
The Bulldogs didn't go away
quietly, as with 51.9 seconds
left in the game, the Bull-
dogs pulled to within one
point, and Dixie still led 58-
57. The Bears never looked
back from there, and
brought home a well earned,
hard fought Victory, defeat-
ing the Bulldogs 66-57.

dinator reported that
garbage was down 200 tons
in January "If this trend
continues, there could be
some issues." He explained
that although it was good for
Dixie County because we
won't have to pay for that
additional garbage, that it
could cause issues with the
Aucilla Landfill.
He also reported that he was
"real worried about our bud-
get." The county is going to
be required to put in a
$350,000 cap at the Transfer

ing is a primary source of
work injury for EMS staff.

2009 Tri-County Land Judging Contest
The 2009 Tri-County Land Judging Contest was held January 31, 2009. There were approxi-
mately 54 Middle and High Schpol FFA students participating from Dixie, Levy and
Gilchrist Counties. Dixie Soil and Water
Conservation District hosted this year's
event.
The students met up at the 1st Dis-
trict Conimunity Center in Old ToWn. They
then raveled to the land judging site which
this year was held on the Oak Grove Dairy.
At this location there were 4 pits awaiting: -
the student's expertise, the first thing they ,
had to consider Was what is called the Con- e
dition Board. This gives infOrmation on sev- .-
eralkey items the students need to assess
the soils characteristics, such as: surface
texture, organic matter, rooting zones, per-
meability of the soil, percent of erosion,
drainage, slope and determine the soil order
at the various. depths. i
The students had to ascertain what
the best agricultural use for the land was.
They also looked at the soil conservation
and what would be the Best Management
Practice (BMP) to keep the soil in production of crops.
The following teams were in attendance and placed accordingly:

QUILTER'S NEWS
Springhouse Quilters will be
celebrating.their seven-
teenth year this month.
Springhouse Quilters was
formed in February 1992, by
a very small group of ladies
who. started meeting at the
Lodge (Springhouse) Build-
ing at Otter Springs. The
membership has grown
from approximately 4-10
members into a membership
of over 100 members. These
are ladies who are dedicated
to quilting and in continu-
ing to teach quilting to oth-
ers. Each year, as new mem-
bers join, they are offered
the opportunity as a benefit
of being a Springhouse
member, to attend 8-10 be-
ginning quilting classes..
This year, there are approxi-
nately 12 new members who
are attending beginning
quilting classes. The mem-
bership of Springhouse en-
courage the membership to
share their knowledge and
teach others to preserve the
art of quilting. Many quilts
made over the years have
been made out of necessity
for warmth. Today, al-
though warmth is still a
must, the form of quilting
has evolved into an art form
and many quilts are made
. and preserved as a piece of
art. -/
Springhouse has two groups
of members; a day group,
and a night group. The day
group meets on the second
Tuesday each month to take
care of the business that
must be 'attended to. On the
fourth Tuesday each month
the day memb's re offered
a workshoppt9 1,arn new
quilting techniques or pat-

The night group meets each
Tuesday night and they too
have a class of beginners
and take care of business
and have interesting work-
shops throughout each
month.
Springhouse Quilters have
used several other locations
over the years for their
meetings from Fanning
Springs City Hall, Woodman
of the World, Don Martin In-
surance, Shrine Club,
Donnnie Precinct Building
and finally located perma-
nently to their present home
west of Trenton. The prop-
erty where their house is lo-
cated was donated to. Spring-
house by Luther and Juani-
ta White of Chiefland. The
mobile home on the proper-
ty was donated by Fanning
Springs City Commission.

WCJB-TV 20 will stop broadcasting'
in analog on February 17th at
11:59pm. This is the original dead-
line mandated by the FCC. Al-
though the FCC has extended the
deadline until June 12, 2009, TV20
will stay with the original deadline
and make the switch on February
17th, 2009.
The majority of stations in the
Gainesville market already broad-
cast in the digital only format. Also
waiting until June would mean a
transition for viewers at the begin-
ning of hurricane season when
viewers depend of WCJB TV20 for
critical information.
Viewers who receive WCJB TV20

construction of a wooden nature-ob-
servation boardwalk, an aluminum
floating fishing pier, and aluminum

the construction drawings, specifica-

2.0 RECEIPT OF BIDS

To ensure that Bidders receive all
addenda and or clarifications to the
Bidding Documents in a timely man-

Rains Middle School.
Hunt Brothers Pizza is lo-

Jiffy Foods Chevron conve-
nience store and students
were encouraged to partici-
pate by purchasing Hunt
Brothers Pizza and turn-
ing in the proof of purchase
label from the pizza box. In
turn, the convenience store
would donate money to the
school.
"We were hoping to earn
enough money to support
the school's book fund and
to purchase additional sup-
plies to get us through the
end of the school year," said
Beverly Baumer, Principal
of Ruth Rains Middle
School. "With the generous

MRS. BETTY JO OLSEN of Old Town passed away Thurs-
day, February 5, 2009 at her home. She was 70. Mrs. Olsen
was born in Atlanta, GA. She moved to Old Town in 1989
from St. Petersburg, FL. A homemaker and a mother, she
was a member of the Recovery Ministries in Old Town.
She is survived by her sons, Richard Howard Johnson of
Old.Town and Kenneth Charles Johnson of Clearwater,
PL; daughters, Stella Louise Hathcox of Cedar Key, FL,
Susie Shirley Niper, Barbara Jo Olsen, Felicia Olsen,
Samantha Jo Olsen, Adrianna Suzette Olsen and An-
ntonette T. Olsen, all of Old Town; brothers, Jerry Jacobs
of Old Town and Jeffrey Jacobs of St. Petersburg; 10
grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were placed under the care of the Rick

Dorothy J. Benson, 55 of Old Town, passed away Feb. 4,
2009 at Shands in Gainesville. Born in Oswego, NY she
moved here from Parish, NY 5 years ago.
She and her husband, Victor Benson owned and operated
an automotive sales lot in Old Town. She was a loving
wife, caring mother and a wonderful grandmother.
She is survived by her husband, Victor P. Benson of Old
Town; sons Victor D. Benson of Old Town and James Ben-
son of Altmar, NY; granddaughters Abby and Gabby Ben-
son of Altmar, NY and Brittney Rainey of Ocala; sister
Patricia Brown and brother Danny Mason, both of Mexi-
co, NY.
Memorial Services will be Tuesday at 12 noon at Hiers-
Baxley Funeral Services in Chiefland with Rev. Kent Zim-
mermann officiating.

Mrs. Georgia D. Lewis, 65, of Thomasville, Georgia (for-
merly of Pelham, GA) passed away on Tuesday, February
3, 2009 at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville,
Georgia.
Born on April 28, 1943 to the late James Randall and Ella
Mae Futch Keen, she was married to Johnny Lewis of
Thomasville, GA (formerly of Pelham, GA). Mrs. Lewis
was a cafe cook and a Morman by faith. She is survived
by her husband, Johnny Lewis of Thomasville, Georgia,
sister Deloris Decker of Cross City, FL, brothers Ray-
mond Keen of Whigham, GA, James Wesley Keen and
John Lawton Keen, both of Old Town, FL, and Tony Free-
man Keen of Vero Beach, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents James Randall
and Ella Mae Futch Keen, brother James Jacob Keen and
sister Hazel Mae Woodham.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2009 from
1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Jamerson-Braswell Funeral
Home in Pelham, Georgia. Funeral services will be held
graveside on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Inter-
ment'will take place at Pelham City Cemetery

NEW PROSPECT BAPTIST NEWS
It is always good to be in God's house, and Sunday
was no exception as we gathered to honor and wor-
ship His Holy Name. After our choir did its usual
fine job, we were blessed with a couple of beautiful
songs by the Waldron family, who also did a fantastic
job.,,..welcome back; anytime! It was also a blessing to
have Bro. Billy back with us, who preached for the
first time since his medical procedure. Although still
a little weak, he delivered a strong message, choosing
his text from Ephesians 3:20. We were also glad to
have Bro. Gene and Sis. Karen with us once again, as
always.
We look forward to our monthly Fellowship Supper
next Wednesday, Feb. 18th, always a time of good
Christian fellowship and fine food. And don't forget
Valentine's Day this coming Saturday!
We were most pleased to have visitors again Sunday;
welcome back anytime, and bring others with you.
The need for prayer is as urgent as ever, so we en-
courage you to pray for all those on the church prayer
lists, our military personnel, and all our political
leaders. Please be in prayer also for Bro. Robert and
Sis. Tracey and group as they begin a mission trip to
Honduras next Thursday, Feb. 19th. Have a good
week, and may God bless and keep you safe.

was crammed fullof

carved the pathway for a
two-team showdown for
the right to be called
world champions.
Summer's preseason
doldrums were height-
ened by the soap opera-
like twists and turns of
former Green Bay Pack-
ers quarterback Brett
Favre's decision to unre-
tire. After getting the
door slammed in his face
by his previous employer,
Favre brought his throw-
it-up passing game to
New York and had his
Jets flying high through
Week 12. But Favre's air-
liner crashed and burned
over the last five weeks of
the season behind misdi-
rected aerials, losing its
once-firm grip on the
-playoffs.
In opening week action,
the odds-on league fa-.
vorite to win the Super
Bowl, New England, saw
its worst nightmare come
true: Tom Brady going
rer the Ball
down in the first quarter
against Kansas City, nev-
er to return. With him
went the Pats playoff
hopes despite satisfactory
quarterback play from
backup Matt Cassel..
The surprise story of
the year unfolded early
behind a retread offen-
sive formation in Miami
called the Wildcat, the su-
perior execution of
which stunned the reign-
ing AFC champion Pafri-
ots in Week 3. The Dol-
phins also benefited from
resurgent QB Chad Pen-
nington to eventually
claim the AFC East
crown. The polar oppo-
site of Miami's rise was
Cleveland's inexplicable
downfall. The Browns,
near-playoff material in
2007, failed miserably
against a sea of high ex-
pectations. Things were
eerie along Lake Erie.
