Sheep Dog Trials Return to Old Town
On January 27, 2009 a sin-
gle-vhicle accident occurred
on Highway 19, just south of
Cross City The vehicle was
travelling southbound on 19
and towing a pickup truck
on a trailer when, for un-
known reasons, the trailer
began to sway violently from
side to side. The trailer be-
came detached from the
truck that was towing it as a
result and overturned onto
its side on the shoulder of
the highway
No injuries were reported,
but, the driver was cited for
not having insurance, lack of
registration, and having an
improper chain while towing.

The Terminator goes to Washington
(for a favor)
When California voters elected Arnold Schwarzenegger
governor. Republicans hailed this as a major victory All
right, he was an actor, but so was Ronald Re~agan, who went
on to become President and who remains a GOP icon.
;In Ial fairness to Schwarzenegger, things'.in the Golden
State had gotten a lot worse since the Gipper left office.
Arnold got elected following the 2003 recall election that
tossed Gray Davis out of office, but Arnold's gubernatorial
honeymoon was short-lived. In the movies, he played the
Terminator, virtually invincible science-fiction character;
but he couldn't subdue the free-for-all that is California pol-
itics.
Since 1900, California has had 15 Republican governors, one
of whom turned "Progressive" while in office, while only 4
Democrats were elected, and none for more than a single
term. These statistics might leave a visitor from another
planet thinking California was part of America's conserva-
tive heartland, but that's not how it is in the Golden State
today
While I won't accuse California's Republican governor of
voting for a Democrat in the most recent presidential elec-
tion, it is a fact that, after declaring his state's need for a
big bucks bailout of the sort we read about daily, he con-
tacted President Obama requesting permission for
California to set its own standards for automotive tailpipe
emissions.
Now, I'm no mechanic, but I can tell you that this would in-
volve a lot more than putting a different kind of tailpipe on
cars sold in California. It actually has to do with what the
vehicle's motor generates in the way of exhaust fumes, and
that gets heavily into things like engine design and the
efficiency of the entire exhaust system after these vapors
depart the power plant. But Obama appears ready to go
along with the Terminator's request, and if that happens,
similar requests by several other states would have to
be honored, and we could eventually wind up with all 50
states setting their own standards for engine exhausts. (Un-
der existing law, these standards are uniform for the entire
country) ,
Not that this would result in any significant difference in
auto engine pollution. States like Florida--and California--
play host to a great many out-of-state vehicles, none of
which would have exhaust systems precisely ,
conforming to the standards of the host state.
Consider also that, if you moved to California with a car
purchased in another state, chances are you would eventu-
ally be required to have your engine and/or exhaust system
modified to conform with California standards. I know
that's not been proposed thus far, but regulations lead to
more regulations.
In case you hadn't noticed, when you put gasoline in your
tank, some fumes escape into the atmosphere. Can't be
helped? Don't tell that to an environmentalist! In sunny Cal-
ifornia, those committed to saving the planet have come up
with a device that will lessen the amount of gaseous gaso-
line that escapes into the air while you're filling up. The de-
vice ain't cheap; it costs more than ten grand, and one has
to be installed on each pump. Comes to a pretty expensive
retro-fit for a Mom and Pop store with gas pumps out front.
With California's economic woes so severe that they're issu-
ing IOU's in lieu of tax refunds, and the rest of the country
not much (if any) better off, one might think this would not
be the best time to create costly regulations that would pose
a further burden on businesses, resulting in added costs to
consumers.
But then, what do I know? I'm just a Reagan Democrat who
voted for McCain because I thought his vice-presidential
candidate was cute.

small family service, mourning our dear departed friend
and faithful servant (no gifts or flowers, please), followed by
a general outcry of "What are we going to do for dishes?"
See, my kids are of that new generation who didn't know
that you can actually wash dishes without a machine. Since
it was right at.Christmas, and money was, well, nonexistent,
I explained to them that we would just have to make do until
I could get it fixed after the holidays.
A funny thing happened .on the way to the Maytag Repair-
man: we decided that that we like washing dishes by hand.
So here it is, February, and I have money in the checking ac-
count, yet we're still getting prunes on our fingers and
scrubbing frying pans in the kitchen sink. Why?
It works better, for one thing. Nothing made
me more insane than pulling a "clean" glass
out of the dishwasher that was dirtier than
when.I put it in. The hard well water out here
near Governor Hill Lake, where I live, does a
serious number on glassware. Even though I,
have a water system, I still find calcium
buildup on dishes that have been machine
washed. I know Jet-Dry promises no spots on
glasses, but the Cascade people have obviously
never lived in Old Town. When we wash dish-
es by hand, the glasses are always sparkling,
and the dishes are always spotless. I don't
have to wash the same glass three times to get
it clean.

The first few days I washed dishes solo, with my iPod in my
pocket and earbuds in my ears, doing that horrible off-key
singing thing that people do when they have headphones on
and can't hear themselves. And yes, I admit, sometimes I
bust out in random dance moves. Apparently, standing in
the kitchen elbow-deep in Palmolive caterwauling with
Metallica, The Flogging Mollys or Pavarotti (OK, I have
weird musical tastes, I know) looked like fun to the kids, and
they wanted a go. "Sure!" I said, and handed them a scrub-
ber.
They loved it. Georgia washed and Mitchell rinsed and
dried, and they worked as a team and had a great time. Of
course, the kitchen floor got soaked, but a quick runaround
with a towel and poof! Clean-looking floor!! Now, when I'm
washing, more often than not, one or the other of them will
ask "Can I dry?" Sometimes they fight over who gets to as-
sist. Yes, really I'm not making this up. They want to help.
So we wash and talk,l and,spend some of.,that family "quality
time" that all of theexperts are always going on about.
It's easier on my dishes, too., I have this beautiful set of
wood salad bowls from Holland Bowl Factory that Doug
bought for me. He saw them on "How it's made" or one of
those DiscoVery Channel shows he's always watching and
just had to buy some. Remind me to tell you about the time
he saw a show on French-press ice cream and FedExed us
all of their flavors, packed in dry ice. (Oh, wait, I just did.)
Somebody needs to get that boy away from the internet.
Anyway, the bowls are wonderful, but you can't put them in
the dishwasher, so I've avoided using them. Now, though, we
use them for everything.
The wood is warm and natural and is a simple pleasure to
use; and to wash and wax. Yes, you have to wax them every
oice in a while. It makes them smell sort of like honey and
gives them a pretty glow. They're pretty "zen" themselves;

more productive growth, is a
necessary requirement for
some fruit trees to produce
and sweetens some citrus (if
the tree is not exposed too
long to freezing temps). As
far as us humans go, just
watch the national weather
channel and see how thank-
ful we are here in north
Florida compared to the rest
of the country
February is a month to
exercise caution when it
comes to planting sensitive
crops and annuals too early
in the month. "I know, 75 and
80 degrees gives you a sense
of Spring Fever!" However,
hard frosts are not uncom-
mon in March. One of my
yearly appeals to our readers
is not to fertilize too early in
February If you promote
growth too early, the frost
will kill all of the highly
'sensitive new leaves and
buds, making your efforts in
vain.
Use your garden time wisely
Take advantage of the beau-
tiful days to trim off the
winter's deadfall, clean out
your planting beds to pre-
pare for fresh plants, add
soil to the beds and don't for-
get to give the ole lawnmow-
er a tune-up n' lube. The last
step is to find your rocking
chair, sit back and watch the
colorful camellias and aza-
leas show off their spring
display of colors.
No matter how you look at
it, be of good cheer, keep a
positive spirit and be thahk-
ful for the freedoms we have
to ENJOY your very own
garden.

I've been leaving the iPod on my desk and doing dishes in ;
the quiet time after the kids have gone to bed. It's serene, re-
ally, with no sounds except the swishing of water around tlie
dishes, the clicking of the ceiling fan and the bubbling of r
the fish tank in the background. The quiet gives me time tp
think. It's much like knitting; I'm busy with my hands, I'm
getting something done, and the simple, repetitiveaction
frees my mind to wander.

body, nourishment and refreshment." This world we live in-,
with all of its 24-hour news cycle, and constant beeping and
buzzing and text-messaging, email notifications and phone
ringing, etc. drowns out everything else. It's no wonder so
many of our kids are taking medicine designed to slow
down over-active minds...they never have the opportunity
just to listen to themselves think! Most of them claim they,
can't even do their homework without music on in the back-
grounc They've become addicted to the constant clamor
and their minds don't know how to deal without continuous
stimulation.
We adults are no better. We drive around in cars with
thumping speakers, work at desks with muzak droning at
us, and are forced to listen to whatever pop songs are on the
playlist at every.grocery store, bank, and mall we enter. ,
When we get home, we turn on the "tube" and zone out until
bedtime, where many of us turn on the bedroom television,
that blares at us the whole time we're sleepmig. Is it any
wonder that we don't sleep well, and that we're cranky andy
irritable? It's time-to turn off the racket, don't you think?
I've discovered that when I wash dishes, I listen to the si- -
lence, and more importantly, t listen to myself. I have to ad-
mit, that more often than not, I doi't have anything intereSt-
ing to say, just the normal mental chatter of a busy mom
with a neverending to-do list. I replay the good parts of the-
day, and try to re-arrange the bad bits to make them more
bearable. The quiet allows me time to absorb all of the ;
things I've stored in my brain that day, and time to think
about and plan what I need to do next. It encourages me
poke around the weird little corners and under the dusty .
cobweb covered furniture of my admittedly bizarre imagi-
nation. Scraping gunk off of pots and pan's may not look
like a form of zen meditation to most people, but it's close ,
enough for me.

Encourages Residents to
"Quit Smoking Now"
Cross City- The Dixie County
Health Department is pleased to
announce it's partnership with
The Suwannee River Area
Health Education Center in pre-
senting "Quit Smoking Now" a
six weeks series of workshops
to encourage residents to quit
smoking.
The program is designed to help
smokers and users of dip tobac-
co "kick the habit". The pro-
gram will be conducted by
Manette Cheshareck, a special-
ist in the topic of smoking ces-
sation. The program is struc-
tured to function as a support
group for individuals who are
interested in laying aside the

national education study as
students still fail to meet key
testing measures
WASHINGTON, DC -A majori-
ty of students in Florida public
schools failed to meet proficien-
cy levels in fourth- and eighth- ,
grade mathematics and reading,
and SAT and ACT scores stagnat-
ed, despite increases in expendi-
tures for public elementary and
secondary education, according
to a new report by the American
Legislative Exchange Council
(ALEC).
Using nationally recognized test
results, the ALEC Report Card
on American Education ranked
the 50 states and the District of
Columbia accordingly, one being
the best and 51 the worst. Min-
nesota placed first in the unique
ranking, Washington, D.C. last,
and Florida 36.
"The Report Card on American
Education clearly shows there is
no correlation between educa-
tional dollars spent and student
achievement in our traditional
smoking and nicotine habit.
Some topics covered are Manag-
ing Your Addiction, Relapse Pre-
vention and Plan Development.
The program is free to the pub-
lic and no registration is re-
quired. The meetings will be
held at the Dixie County Healih
Department in the conference
room for 6 consecutive sessions
on Tuesday night from 6-8 p.m.

10 and continue until March 1k7.

The Dixie County Color Guard (DCCG) is a group of former
JROTC members and others who came together in mid-No-
vember 2008, at the request of a local American Legion post
(291) to provide Color Guard, Honor Guard, Rifle Team ser-
vices to the local/regional community: (The county high
school chose to discontinue the school JROTC program.)
We currently have seven members, six who were part of the
competition teams that.went to JROTC National cpmpeti-
tion in 2008. We also have three advisors. One was the for-
mer JROTC Senior Instructor at the high school and one
who was a Color Guard commander in the military
The DCCG is a non-profit that is not affiliated with the local
high school or JROTC. We are self-supported and depend
on sponsorship for our parade/memorial/fiuneral services.
We are also appreciative of any donations.
We are currently limited to the five ACU uniforms that
have been purchased with sponsor funds and by one of the
advisors. We look forward to having class B dress uniforms
and Civil War vintage dress for use at the Confederate
Memorial Day services.
We look forward to an opportunity to serve your communi-
ty or organization.

A body was found in Old
Town near the old Army
Surplus store: on CR 349
North on Tuesday after-
noon. A concerned
neighbor called into the
Dixie County Sheriff's
Office, asking for a wel-
fare check on the neigh-
bor, who she hadn't seen
since November, and be-
cause buzzards were pre-
sent around the home.
Investigating deputies
confirmed that there
was indeed a body In the
home and the funeral
home was summoned.
Details on the identity
and cause of death of
the person were not
available at press time.

Taxes
Well, it is that time of year again.
No, I'm not talking about
Valentine's day.. I'm referring to
tax time. Traditionally this is the
time for everyone to get stressed
out, buy large bottles of, um, as-
prin, and try to sort out all of the
lines on those IRS forms again. Do
avoid aspirin overdoses, many
(smart) people will commonly take
their important tax documents to a
tax professional and allow them to
sweat it out. Today, more and more
people are leaning towards elec-
tronic filing of their taxes.
Electronic filing (or e-filing) al-
lows you to use your computer to
accurately calculate your taxes.
Most programs do all of the actual
calculations and figuring for you,
asking you to input various infor-
mation from your collection of tax
documents.
One such program, which is avail-
able for free online, has come high-
ly recommended by our presti-
gious editor. Tax Act is the name of,
the software, and is available at
(you guessed it) taxact.com.
I took the liberty of having a look
at som-of the features and reviews
that were'floating around on the in-
ternet. While, as with anything,
there were some negative com-
ments, most of the feedback I found
was positive. So positive, as a mat-
ter of fact, that many of the re-
viewers had actually paid for the
full-featured version of the pro-
gram. I would reccommend trying
the free version first, of course.
While many of you will certainly
have misgivings about putting your
tax information on the internet, it
is actually more secure than mail-
ing the forms in. It at least takes a
relatively skilled person to decrypt
all of that encoded data, even once
they've got it. Intercepting the data
would be a difficult task as well.
Whereas your common sneak-thief
can easily steal, open, and subse-
quently read the contents of, an en-
velope.
Not saying that the USPS is not se-
cure or anything... but envelopes
have, as yet, no encryption. When
you think about it that way, maybe
all of this internet payment/tax-
es/shopping isn't so insecure as
you might think.

F Helen Louise Butsch
Mrs. Helen Louise Butsch of Old Town, Florida, passed
away January 27, 2009 at the age of 74. Mrs. Butsch was
born in Osprey, Florida, to Allie and Lessie Taylor on
April 27, 1934.
After retiring, Mrs. Butsch moved to Old Town where she
lived for the past 13 years. She passed away at Cross City
Rehab after a lengthy illness.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Walker,
and a grandson, Crockett Keen. She is survived by her
daughter, Chi Chi (David) Keen, Old Town; son, Terry
(Annie) Swinehart, Old Town; and daughter, Kelley
Sunglieng, Fountain, Colorado; seven grandchildren,
Shannon, B. J., Kevin, Kris, Callie, Dylan, & Elizabeth;
and five great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. .

CarolJean (Ward) Borcheller
Carol Jean (Ward) Borcheller passed away peacefully at
her home in Cross City, FLorida, on January 23, 2009 at
the age of 70.
Carol was born in Pahokee, FL and attended West Palm
Beach High School, later returning to Cross City where
she lived for more than 30 years. She loved to read, spend
time outdoors and was an avid NASCAR fan. She will be
remembered as a wonderful mother, devoted wife, and lov-
ing grandmother. She will be missed deeply by her family
and everyone who had the pleasure to know her.
She is survived by her sons Conrad Borcheller of Cross
City, FL; Ralph Borcheller of West Palm Beach, FL; Chuck
Borcheller of Cross City, FL; her daughters Jeannie My-
ers of Royal Palm Beach, FL and Sherry Borcheller of
Old Town, FL; her grandchildren Nicole Borcheller of La-
canto, and Ann Marie Borcheller, stationed in Norfolk,
VA and her sister, Beverly Fox of Alexandria, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and
Claris Ward; her brothers Kenneth and Jerry Ward and
her husband Michael John.
The Borcheller family would like to thank the nurses and
staff of Haven Hospice of Chiefland fo the care and sup-
port they provided to us and our mother during her ill-
ness.

it's the life in your years."
We love you mom and will miss you deeply, you will be
forever in our hearts.
Her ashes were interred with her beloved husband Mike
in Memorial Gardens of Lacanto, FL. Arrangements
were under the care of Rick Gooding Funeral home,
Cross City
The United Methodist Churches of Dixie, Lafayette and
Taylor Counties will host a revival February 1st through
February 7th starting at 7:00 PM. each evening.

UMC, Rev. J.T. Taylor of Perry UMC; February 3rd, Hendry

UMC, Rev..Lerbie Alligood, retired; and February 7th, Lake
Bird UMC, Rev. Antonio Fernandez, District Superinten-
dent of the North West District. There will be fellowship
following the Sunday and Saturday nights' services. The
public from all three counties are invited to attend.

What a beautiful day God gave
us today Finally we had some
warm weather and sunshine.
Everyone seemed to be moti-
vated to get out of the house
and attend services today We
thank God for all of His bless-
ings and especially the fantas-
tic day He gave us today.
Our special music was very
special as always. Debra
Phillips sang in the morning
service and the Brittons and
Crehshaws sang in the evening
service. Bro. Jackie did his
usual good job in the pulpit de-
livering the messages that God
had laid on his heart.
Our Seniors group is plan-
ning a Valentine social on
Tuesday night February 17th
at 6:30 PM. This is a covered
dish social, so all of our se-
niors are requested to bring
their favorite dish and let's all
put our food together and en-
joy a great evening of good
food and wonderful fellowship.
There is a sign-up sheet on the
bulletin board in the hallway
behind the pulpit. Just sign
your name and out to the side
jot down what you plan to
bring. We will be looking for-
ward to seeing you there. If
you have any questions, see Al-
ice Bryan or Anne Crenshaw.
We had several visitors to-
day and we want them to know
they are very special to us. We
pray that our church family

William Donald Welch
W Don Welch was born June 24, 1930, in Jacksonville,
Florida. His parents were William Hampton and Verde
Welch.
Don enjoyed a long and productive career as a port man-
agement and transportation system expert. But the focus
of Don's life was his family He is survived by his wife of
47 years, Lillemor, his daughter, Pia Garvin and husband
Merrell of McCormick, SC., daughter, Ingrid Welch of
Charleston, SC, his son, Donald C. Welch and wife San-
dra of Charleston, grandchildren, Stina Garvin, Cody
Garvin, Donald A. Welch, Carrie K. Welch and William
Welch Mount, great-grand daughter, Hanna Garvin, and
his aunt, Ruby Welch of Cross City, Fl.
He always considered himself "the boy from Dixie Coun-
ty", who grew up understanding and appreciating the
values and ethics of work and education. He was an avid
outdoorsman and an accomplished bass fisherman. He es-
pecially enjoyed regaling his children and grandchildren
with his boyhood tales of hunting, fishing, and the gener-
al mischief attending life growing up in rural central
Florida. Don retired as South Carolina's port director in
1997. He and Lillemor then moved to Florida where they
spent time at Vero Beach and at the Welch family home in
Dixie County
Funeral services will be private. The family requests that
in lieu of flowers donations be made in honor and memo-
ry of Don Welch to VNA Hospice of Indian River County,
1110 35th lane Vero Beach Florida 32960. Cox-Gifford- Sea-
winds Funeral Home of Vero Beach is handling arrange-

We thank God for the good services in His house again Sun-
day, as our choir and musicians did a beautiful job with the
songs of old. Bro. Gene was anointed from on High as he:
delivered God's Spirit-filled message from 1st Corinthians
3:9-15. It was good to have Bro. Billy and Sis. Penny with us
again, as the former announced that, barring any difficul-
ties, he would most likely be back in the Pulpit next Sundcay.
We really appreciate Bro. Gene and Sis. Karen caring for ;
the "flock" during Bro. Billy's recovery, and welcome them
back anytime!
Sis. Tracey Groom is scheduled to leave Feb. 19th on a mis-
sion trip to Honduras with a group who will aid in the mod-
ical needs of the local people and, we might remind those:
who wish to contribute medical supplies to put them in the
box in the back of the church sanctuary We also encourage
you to be in prayer for Sis. Tracey and the group as they
participate in this caring and very worthwhile effort to
help people in need.
We were most pleased to have visitors again Sunday, and in-
vite you back...we welcome all visitors, always. Have a good

the prayer lists, our military personnel, and all our political

Holmes' heroics bring
Pittsburgh sixth title

Charley Trippi, Chet Bulger,
and any'other remaining liv-
ing Chicago Cardinals play-
-ers from the 1947 NFL cham-
pionship team can relax.
'They're still the only team
in the 111 years of the Cardi-
nals' franchise to win a title
,game. But these 2008 birds
have nothing to hang their
beaks about. The Arizonans
came within two minutes
and 37 seconds of recording
their first-ever Super Bowl
win, behind a sterling 16-
point comeback that pro-
pelled the NFC champions
into a three-point lead. But.
,then Pittsburgh put on a
,dramatic Cinderella drive of
its own, lighting its victory
lamp while snuffing out the
Cards' candle to come away
with a 27-23 win in Super
Bowl XLIII Sunday in Tam-
pa.
The Super Bowl MVP, Pitts-
burgh Wideout Santonio
Holmes, had plenty of prac-
tice on his toe-tipping, end
zone-corner, winning-touch-
-lown grab. It was a similar,
'.and highly controversial,;
toe-tapper on the front end
-bf the goal line against the .
Baltimore Ravens that
brought a crucial late-sea-
son AFC North win for the
-_-Steelers and prepared
Holmes for his Super Bowl-
twinning moment. His gut-
check four-catch final-drive

performance provided the
ultimate difference in the
Steelers' winning a record
sixth Super Bowl.
In retrospect, with the game
on the line, two players
stepped forward to produce
.godly moments. Holmes was
one. The other was the
equally magnificent Larry
Fitzgerald. Pittsburgh
checked the Cardinals' pre-,
mier wide receiver early on,
but no team can totally shut
down Fitzgerald, who led a
stirring Cardinals comeback
from a 20-7 deficit, scoring
two fourth-quarter touch-
downs, the final one to put
Arizona up 23-20 with just
2:37 to play.
But give the 2008 titlists
credit. Ben Roethlisberger,
Holmes, and the rest of the
world champion Pittsburgh
Steelers have a right to their
swagger in the wake of the
win. Holmes' great play
notwithstanding, though,
the game was won at the end
of the first half.
That's when the most aston-
ishing first-half ending ever
to take place on a football
field occurred. Onlookers
babbled incoherently en
route to complete speech-
lessness. It will be duly reg-
istered as one of the top
plays in Super Bowl history:
. With just 18 seconds till.half-
time and the Cardinals on
the Pittsburgh 1, down by
three but ready to take the
lead, quarterback Kurt
Warner threw a quick slant-,

in intended for Anquan
Boldin that was snapped up
instead by Steelers outside
linebacker James Harrison.
The NFL Defensive Player of
the Year rambled 100 yards
through much of the Cardi-
nals team to fall, tackled,
into the end zone for the
longest score of any kind in
Super Bowl annals.
The play was massive. In-
stead of Arizona heading
into the half possibly lead-
ing by three and at least tied
at 10, it was the Steelers who
rang up the TD-a 14-point
turnaround. Take away Kurt
Warner's big interception
there, and it doesn't matter
what Holmes does with his
tippy toes in the final sec-
onds.
And for those breathless to
know whether Kurt Warner
had to win the Super Bowl
to gain a slot in the Hall of
Fame, the answer turns out
to be no, he didn't have to
win it. He.earned it regard-
less. His excellent 31-of-43
passing for 377 yards and
three touchdowns led his
team to the lead before Pitts-
burgh's final drive. But
events proved there was just
no defense for Holmes.
