Ha is charged %kith aggra-

murder. A date for his first
court appearance on these
charges were not available as

The victim was identified
as Kayla Pham, 28, of
Orlando, who has suffered
multiple gunshot wounds and
was transported by Life Flight
to Sacred Heart Hospital.
As of Tuesday afternoon
.Pham was in critical condition
with at least seven gunshot

Ha originally reported that
he and Pham were traveling on
Interstate 10 headed to Orlando
after visiting Pham's family in
New Orleans.
Pham reportedly asked
him to pull over due to a need
to exit the vehicle when anoth-

them, at which time an
unknown male approached her.
Ha said he heard numer-

Pham screaming for help and
that she had been robbed.
Pham was reportedly

Fires heat up the
holiday weekend
NArea departments battle five blazes
By RYAN ARVAY
rarvay@srpressgazette.com
Several of the area's fire
departments responded to an
outbreak of fires during the
days leading up to the
Christmas holiday, with Santa
Rosa County reporting five
fires between December 21
and Christmas Day.
In one instance a trailer
located on the 9400 block of
Nichols Lake Road in East
Milton was completely lost
due to a fire caused by an
overloaded electrical circuit,
displacing two families who
had. been sharing the resi-
dence.
Chief Bill Thompson of
the East Milton Fire
Department, who responded
to the call, says this is a com-
mon cause of household fires
during this time of year when
residents often plug too many
appliances, along with
Christmas lights, into one out-
let.
In the case of this particu-
lar fire, Thompson says a
freezer, space heater, and
stereo were all running off the
same circuit-pulling too
many amps-and simply
overheated. "A space heater
should be on its own circuit, it
pulls too much energy," he
says.
A Ground .Fault
Interupting Circuit, more
commonly known as a surge
protector, offers Thompson, is
a safe (but not fool proof) way
to plug multiple items into one

The Santa Rosa County Recycling Drop Off Center at Five Points shows how big of a recycling issue the county actually has. County
workers put in extra hours on Wednesday to make sure situations like the one pictured above did not become worse and scatter
beyond the center's site.

Improving county recycling
O County hopes to simplify its current process
By JOSHUA WILKS
jwilks@srpressgazette.com
If all goes as planned,
recycling in Santa Rosa
County will get a bit easier by
gradually changing the habits
of recyclers. But only veter-
an recyclers may notice the
adjustment.
In an effort to decrease
program expenses by reducing
fuel usage, labor, and equip-
ment wear and tear, Santa
Rosa County is experimenting
with a modified recycling pro-
cedure at two of its 25 recycle
locations.
The trial locations include
the Five Flags Shopping
Center in Milton, and the Five
Points Recycle Drop Off
Center in Pace. The trial
process is introducing users to
recycle containers that are
dedicated only to one recycla-
ble material each. Currently,
each container has sections
where four types of recyclable
materials are deposited in one
bin, including newspapers and
cardboard, plastic, glass and
aluminium.
'Bs designating individ-
ual containers, we don't have
to empty them as much as we
do now," said Floyd Rentz, the
county's recycling manager.
"Most of the time one section
will fill up before the others do
and we have to take the whole
container."
The problem the county
faces with the current proce-
dure is that one of the four
sections in the multi-material
bins will fill up before the
other sections in the container.
This requires the whole con-
trainer to be unloaded when
sometimes the other sections
are nearly empty. The new
containers will be emptied
when completely full.
The recycling department
is monitoring the two test sites
to see how the public responds
to the new system. Currently,
only the county-owned Five
Points site has signs specify-
ing differences between bins.
"It seems to be working
pretty good," Rentz said. "It
helps us eliminate time spent

south of Lewis Road in her

Burchfield over corrected

Tankersley was pro-

The Bagdad Village Perservation Association is trying to identify the individuals in the last photo taken of the Bagdad Land and Lumber

N Bagdad Village Perservation Association is looking for names
By JOSHUA WILKS
jwilks@srpressgazette.coin
Almost 70 years after the
last photo was taken of the
Bagdad Land & Lumber Co.'s
employees in 1939, the
Bagdad Village Preservation
Association is attempting to
put names to those faces.
"This photograph has
been in area homes since
1939," said Elaine Willis,
Bagdad Museum committee
member. "Every employee
received a copy.
Unfortunately, we haven't
found a photograph that lists
or identifies each person."
Blown up several times its
original size, the "last take"
photograph is on display at the
Bagdad Village Museum
where visitors have been iden-
tifying those photographed,
that includes company own-
ers, employees and their chil-
dren.
"Descendants have been
most helpful identifying par-
ents, grandparents, or other
relatives," Willis said. "There
are some in the photograph
who are still living, but not
many."
One of those who is still
living and has helped identify
people in the photograph is
former lumber mill employee
Vernon Cobb,
97, of "The mill operated more
Pensacola. Cobb was bom in
Bagdad in 1910 and began
working at the mill in 1926.
He continued until it closed on
April 18, 1939. Cobb is one of
the last known surviving mill
employees.
Taken at a time when the
U.S. was recovering from the
greatest economic depression
it ever encountered, and two
years before the U.S. entered
World War II, Willis hopes the
museum group will learn and
be able to teach others from
what cultural and historical
implications can be interpreted
from the snapshot.
than 110 years and it was peo-
ple like those in the photo-
graph that made it happen,"
Willis said. "The founder,
Joseph Forsyth, and other mill
owners throughout the years,
provided capital and ideas for
operation, but it was the every-
day worker who toiled and
labored to produce success."
Willis said a study of the
photograph helps identify how
times have changed since the
mill closed 69 years ago. For
instance, she points out, white
and black workers were seg-
regated at that time even in

tion checkpoints during the
month of January, 2008 at the
below listed locations in Santa
Rosa County.
Recognizing the danger
presented to the public by
defective vehicle equipment,
troopers will concentrate their
efforts on vehicles being oper-

Hello this is Tim. Some
people have forgotten the
meaning of giving. Some peo-
ple only want to receive, but
they need to give. You feel a
lot better when you give.
Monday, 1:23 p.m.
This is Joanne. Last
Friday afternoon, December
21, a gentleman brought bags
of food and wrapped gifts into
the Manna Food Bank. He left
before we had time to appro-
priately thank him. I would
like him to know the gifts
were taken to Family Promise
that same afternoon where
they really needed them and
were greatly appreciated.
Thank you sir, for both your
food and your gifts.
Sunday, 2:55 p.m.
Yes, this is David. I was
glad to see in your Saturday,
December 22 paper that you
recognized the Milton High
robotics team when they went
to the Auburn finals and
placed up there. But I noticed
you have not said anything
about the fact that the Hobbs
Middle School team, which is
in their first year going, placed
2nd at UJWF and then went to
Auburn also and placed 15 out
of 46 schools, most of which
are high schools.
This is very disappoint-
ing, my daughter was involved
in that and was looking for-
ward to seeing it in the paper.
I would hope you would
check in on this and report on
it too. Thank you.
Editor's Note: The Press
Gazette covered the Hobbs
robotics team in September
and again in the November 17
edition The most recent men-
tion of Milton High appeared
on the Milton Panther Page,
which is submitted to us by
the High School.
Saturday, 4:07 p.m.
Yes this is T. Fred. As of
today, Saturday, December
22, the citizens of Santa Rosa
County are paying between 12
and 18 cents more for a gallon
of gasoline than the residents
of Escambia County. State
Taxes are the same. Are coun-
ty tax differences that great
that cause Santa Rosa County
residents to be ripped off to
that extent? Why don't you do
an investigative piece on the
discrepancy. Eighteen cents is
an obscene amount.
You may Speak Out

sorting and hauling the contain-

The recycling program is
funded by the sale of the recycla-
ble materials and landfill tipping
fees. If the trial is successful,
the new bins will be phased in at
other sites. The new procedure
will cut back mileage and wear
, and tear on county vehicles used
to haul the containers.
"We're trying to find out
how the public will respond,"
Rentz said. "We'll see how this
goes before we implement it
other places"
Joy Simmons, a Pace resi-
dent, uses the Five Points recy-
cling site at least once a week.
"I haven't really noticed a
difference, but I can see how it
would help save county
resources," Simmons said. "It's.
nice to know the county is think-
ing of ways to save money
instead of cutting the recycling
program back. One day I'd like
to see curbside recycling."
Department of Transportation.
The signs were installed with-
in seven months of the request
at no cost to Santa Rosa
County.
"People pull off the inter-'
state all the time when travel-
ing to either get something to
eat or to just drive through a
community," said Kate
Wilkes, executive director for
the county's Tourist
Development Council. "We
have a lot to offer and it's fan-
tastic to have anything that lets
people know we're here."
Wilkes said the Tourist
Development Council is in the
beginning stages developing a
countywide signage program
that will provide consistent
signs to county .attractions
such as the two histdoic dis`
tricts, the rivers and farm-
lands, as well as the beaches.
"People are so interested
in historical districts," Wilkes
said. "Well done, minimal sig-
nage will help get them to
slow down and perhaps visit.
These news signs are a fantas-
tic way to start that."
Throughout August and -
September, Santa Rosa
County replaced all the green
street name signs throughout
the Bagdad historic district
with brown signs. The new -
signs add to the historical
draw to the area, Wilkes said.
The Tourist Development -
Council has also discussed
requesting signage off
Interstate 65, she said.
"I requested a sign for the
West Florida Railroad
Museum as a citizen about 10
years ago, but was told we had
to have something like 30,000
visitors a year in order to get'
it. The historic districts at least
get that." Cole said. "This just
adds another reason to pro-
mote our historic districts."
MARKET
RECAP
A look at the

Futures Markets Weekly Recap
- New Energy Bill gives boost to
deferred Crop Futures
Recently, President Bush signed
the Energy Independence and Security
Act of 2007. The law lays out the
nation's agenda for decreasing its use
of foreign fossil fuels. Not unexpect-
edly, the new law gives a big boost tot
the amount of renewable fuels that
must be used in the coming years. The
previous energy bill, passed in 2005,
put minimum usage for renewable
fuels at 7.5 billion gallons by the year
2012. The new law boosts that mini-
mum usage to 36 billion gallons by
2022. The law's passage has given a
lot of support to ethanol prices in
recent weeks because the new mini-
mum usage for renewable fuels in
2008 will now rise from 5.4 billion
gallons to 9 billion gallons, most of
which will come from ethanol.
Because ethanol producers are already
making far in excess of the 5.4 billion
gallons previously required, prices had
been driven down over the summer
and fall. The new 9 billion gallon min-
imum should absorb the excess
ethanol ahead being produced.
The new law is certainly impor--
tant for crop prices, notably fIr corn,
soybeans and soybean oil, as they are
the primary components of renewable

Santa Rosa farmers will find a lot of interest in this week's
fuels production in the U.S. What was perhaps unexpected was the huge
jump in prices for the deferred contracts for these crops. The nearby com
contract, in this case March, rose less than three cents per bushel on
Wednesday and is still below the contract's highest price. However the
December 2008 and December 2009 contracts jumped by 3.75 and 4.75
cents respectively on Wednesday to both set new contract highs.
Soybeans were similar. The nearby January contracts rose 10.75 cents
while the November 2008 and November 2009 contracts rose 17.5 and
11 cents respectively and also set new highs. Because they represent
crops that are not yet planted, these defended contracts are often used to
signal farmers to plant more of a certain crop in upcoming years, it
appears that the market is trying to signal farmers to plant more of both
corn and soybeans. Because these two typically compete for acreage, it
is impossible to dramatically increase plantings of both. This may cause
more price support in the coming months until farmers decide next spring
which crops will give them the best return on their land. It could also have
cany-over support to other food and textile crops as some of their acres
may be cut to plant more fuel-producing crops.
As one might expect from the increased need for com and soybeans
in coming years, some crops will see lower production. Traders seem to
think that one of the biggest cuts will come in Cotton production.
Currently, the March 2008 Cotton Contract trades fro 66.22 cents per
pound, but the December 2008 Contract is trading at 73.81 cents. This is
a large premium to the current contract and in fact, the December 2009
contract is trading still higher at 80 cents per pound. Because much of the
nation's cotton acreages are in areas that are also suitable to growing both
corn and soybeans, it is possible that traders are pricing in a big produc-
tion cut in coming years for cotton. This seemed to be bome out to some
extent on Wednesday when, similar to com and soybeans, the deferred
cotton contract rose much more than the nearby contract. With the
increased need for fuel-producing crops, prices deferred contracts of
wheat, cotton, and rice could see some support as traders continue to
dchate how many acres will be sacrificed to grow more corn and soy-
bcans.
The morning after Christmas
W wednesday was probably the second busiest shaping day as area resists were busy looking to

outlet. Still, it is advised con-
sumers check their appliance
user manuals for safe use.
The other fires in the area
were as follows:
December 21, on the 2100
block of Colonial Avenue in
Navarre. Initial reports indi-
cate a burning candle caused a
mobile home to catch fire. The
home was deemed a total loss,
displacing two adults. There
were no injuries.
December 21, on West
Gate Drive near Whiting
Field. A kitchen fire broke
out in a mobile home. Fire
crews were able to contain the
fire to the one room, though
the dwelling did suffer smoke
and water damage. The occu-
pants were a single adult
female and a child. The
female was transported to the
Santa Rosa Medical Center,
the child was not harmed.
December 24, a detached
garage and the vehicle inside
were destroyed by a fire on
the 5600 block of Columbia
Drive. There was no damage
to the home. The cause of the
fire is still under investigation.
December 25, a fire
caused by the electrical junc-
tion box did minimal damage
to a home on the 5800 block
of Peach Street in Milton.

Santa Rosa County has
continued with its "Keep Your
Holidays Bright" Fire Safety
Campaign throughout the
month of December.
A Christmas tree adorned
with candles was placed in the
lobby of the County
Administrative Building at the
beginning of the month. For
each fire that was exstin-
guished in the county during
this holiday season one of the
candles was put out.
The County has also been
releasing fire safety facts each
day of the month. These help-
ful tips can be found at the

Santa Rosa Commissioner
Bob Cole has been waiting
nearly a decade to see brown
signs along 1-10 identifying
the Bagdad and Milton his-
toric districts. Last week, his
long awaited wish came true.
The Florida Department
of Transportation last week
installed historic district signs
along I-10 at the Garcon Point
Road exits underneath the
NAS Whiting Field signs.
"The thousands of people
who travel down 1-10 each day
have no idea what's here,"
Cole said. "The acknowledge-
ment will hopefully draw peo-
ple off the interstate."
The Santa Rosa County
Commission requested the
signs be installed earlier this
year, Cole said. When
requested, the signs had to be
approved by the Florida

OUR VIEW
Time to try
people control
What is happening to society today?
More and more, you hear of people settling
their differences with guns.
Have the days of the Wild West returned?
The Second Amendment guarantees all but
those who have run afoul of the law the right to
bear arms, but anyone can take that right a little
too far.
What happened to talking out our differences?
As children, our differences were often settled
via a good fight or an argument that lasted a short
time until we ended up playing some game again
in our neighborhood.
You can get hurt in a fight, but in most cases,
you will heal without any recognizable signs of
your "settlement."
However, when a gun is involved, much more
than a simple scar is often left behind.
Usually, it is a lost loved one who is remem-
bered as family and friends visit the grave marker.
Today, there are things like drive-by shootings
or, worse yet, arguments settled at the end of a
barrel/
Gun control doesn't seem to be the issue here.
For those looking to champion a cause, why
not try "people control?"
A gun is a mindless hunk of metal that is
forged into a weapon and weapons have been used
by society as long as hunter-gathers have existed.
Unfortunately, not everyone has the mental
wherewithal to use these instruments wisely.
Does everyone with a gun have a problem? No.
The issue is created by those who feel death is
the only way to settle a momentary difference of
opinion.
It has gotten so bad that those who supposedly
love one another often cross this line, shooting
the person they reportedly love.
It is understandable to love someone and not
be able to live with them, which is probably the
reason the divorce rate has grown to its present
point, but divorce is a long way from murder.
These people often end up being a blight on
society.
We end up paying for the trial and, if convict-
ed, it becomes everyone's responsibility to pay for
the offender's upkeep in a penal facility of the
state.
Parts of our society can glamorize the gangster
or "gangsta" mentality through film and song, but
having street cred like this is not impressive. It is
repulsive.
Several American's want our military home
saying we do not need to be fighting wars and
uprisings in other parts of the globe, yet these
same people are often far too silent when it comes
to the wars and battles on our streets here at
home.
Go figure.

Time for another
Gooberhead Award present-
ed periodically to people in
the news who have their
tongues running 100 miles an
hour, but forgot to put their
brains in gear.
Today's Goober is no one
you've heard of, but he's
messing with your consumer
rights. Dennis Wolff is his
name, Pennsylvania's secre-
tary of agriculture. He's sid-
ing with Monsanto
Corporation against his own
state's organic dairy farmers
who don't add BGH to their
milk.
What's BGH? Essentially,
it's an artificial sex hormone
made by Monsanto to force
cows to give more milk.
Since consumers naturally
prefer not to have hormone
additives in their families'
milk, organ-
ic producers
and others
who don't
add them to
their prod-
ucts have
been label-
ing their
milk as free
of
HIGMOWER Monsanto's
hormone,
thus giving consumers a clear
choice.
This honest marketing tac-
tic has PO'd Monsanto, which
has sent its lobbyists scurry-
ing around the country to
demand that state officials
ban such labeling. You'd think
that this would be laughed off
as absurd but not in
Pennsylvania. Secretary Wolff
recently rose up on his hind
legs and howled at the organ-
ic producers, decreeing that
they can't use "absence label-
ing," which informs shoppers
what is not in their products.
This Gooberhead is cracking
down on labels that say such
things as "no artificial hor-
mones," "pesticide free," and
"antibiotic free," even
though the labels are true.
Why? Because, he says,
absence labeling "confuses"
consumers. Indeed, Wolff
claimed he has received many
calls from confused con-
sumers. But, alas, when asked
who, specifically, had com-
plained, he could not produce:
a single name.
Still, Wolff's ban has set a
precedent, and Monsanto's
lobbyists are moving into
other states. To fight back,
call the Organic Consumers
Association: 218-226-4164.

East beats West
N Defense holds for 14-10 win
By BILL GAMBLING
.,portoii' srp? e aite l.cont
Some area seniors played
their final football game on
Dec. 21 at the Pensacola
Sports Association's All-Star
Game, but those on the East
Squad enjoyed a sweet 14-10
win over the West.
Both teams displayed a
strong defense as neither team
could cross the goal line in the
second half, but the West,
which was made up of players
from Escambia County,
threatened a couple of time.
The biggest threat came
with just under six minutes
remaining in the game as the
West was trailing 14-10.
Pensacola Catholic's
David Kooi faked a pass and
then handed the ball off to
Northvie\'s Nakita Myles.
Myles ran for 46 yards
until Jay's Brandt Hendricks
tackled him from behind.
SA motion penalty and
Myles being tackled for a five-
yard loss pretty much killed
the dri\ e as the West ended up
giving the ball over on downs
it the East 30.
But the game wasn't over
just yet.
With just, under two min-
utes to play the East were
forcedd to punt the ball after
reaching the West 48.
Milton's Matt Shouppe
stood back waiting g for the.
snap that eventually% sailed
over his head.
Shouppe, who also plays
soccer for the Panthers, ran
back and retrieved the ball at
the East 20 and let loose with
a punt that pinned the West
back on their own 17 yard
line.
From there the East
defense went to work with
William Beasley, an NC State
commitment, recovering a
Kooi fumble at the West 1'
with 54-seconds remaining to
preserve the win.
"This was a fun experi-
ence for everybody," said East
Head Coach Mile McMillion.
"This was an awesome night
for the kids and the coaching
staff.
"Everyone showed up to
practice ready to work, and
gave a maximum effort all
week for a common cause. I
am very proud to be associat-
ed with this group of young
people.
It looked as it was going
to be a long night for the East,
which was made up of players
from Santa Rosa and
Okaloosa County, as Kooi led
the West on a drive to take a 3-=
0 lead on a Blake Ericson 40

walked on at FSU as a sopho-

Tallahassee are real good.
"No one has been down
about the situation at prac-
tice," said Compton.
"Everyone has been real posi-
tive.
"Our backs are against the
wall and it seems to be playing
out a little like a Disney
movie, so we can only do what
we can do."
Compton is a little disap-
pointed about the problems
that have come to light, but he
has a bigger goal.
Former Milton Panther Sean Compton is looking to make a little music of his own to finish out his
football career as the Florida State Seminoles face the Kentucky Wildcats this Monday in the Music
City Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee.

"I would like to have
everyone at the game, but that
is not my concern,' said
Compton. "I want to win my

last game and I am in a situa-
tion where I can possibly have
some influence on that."
As a walk-on Compton
has had to pay a big price, but
cashed in this year with a
scholarship as a senior.
"I fell into a good situa-
tion as I got to play on the punt
team in my first spring game,
which is unheard of around
here," said
Compton.
"There are
only one
or two
walk-ons
still with
the team
since I
joined.
"They

how it
really is, Smiley
while I
kept working with my nose to
the grindstone."
Compton remembers
going to Nashville as a young-
ster going to Opryland, which
has been closed for over 10
years, but he is excited about
going back.
"There should be several
interesting places to go," said
Compton. "I remember last
year going to San Francisco
and our team visiting Alcatraz
with the players from UCLA."
While Compton is looking
to see some minutes, Smiley is
hoping to get on the field for
the South Florida Bulls.
Smiley has the rare honor
of being the back up to the
Bulls George Selvie.
"Right now I am practic-
ing hard and working on my
grades," said Smiley. "I am
not seeing much time since I
am the back up to Selvie, who
is doing his thing this season."
As the Bulls, who were
ranked as high as No. 2
nationally, started practice
Smiley saw a great deal of
time.
"The starters do a few reps
and then the rest of the prac-
tice has been for the back-
ups," said Smiley. "I am using
this time to get better and
work on my technique."
Most of the time Smiley is
intently watching Selvie, who
has sort of become a mentor to
the former Panther.
"During practice I watch
how he handles certain situa-
tions and
try to do
those same
things .
when it is r
my turn to .
line up," --
s a i d
Smiley.
"He teach-
es me
without
actually
teaching Kutch
me, but he
is also a good guy who will
pick me up when I am down.
"He knows I am use to
playing, but he reminds me
that I can't give up because
you never know when you
will get an opportunity to play
and you have to be ready."
Smiley admitted he is
thinking about talking to the
coaches about moving to the
other side of the line, where he
would be challenging a junior
or senior for the starting job
next season.
But his biggest adjustment
was the speed of the game.
"At first it was a shock,"

Bowl
Continued From Page One
said Smiley. "That first play
I felt like my head was on a
turn table; it was so fast."
Smiley, who took a
medical redshirt his first
year due to a foot injury, is
getting the last laugh on
those who questioned his
choice of colleges.
"I knew I made the right
choice when I signed," said
Smiley. "Now everyone at
my mom's job, the friends I
have on MySpace, and
everyone one else are
amazed like we came out of
nowhere.
"The main reason I was
happy with my choice is
because this place is more
like family and I saw the
success. But they really
make you feel at home."
Another Panther who
the bowl games are becom-
ing old hat to is Zach
Kutch.
The junior kicker is not
only getting ready for his
third bowl game since high
school, but to graduate in
2008 with his bachelors
degree in human resources
and has already been
accepted into Auburn's
Master's Degree program.
"I have been trying to
work hard and use my time
wisely," said Kutch, who has
seen some action this season
in kickoffs and extra points.
"I have set my goals high
and feel like I can achieve
them, but the think is to take
things one step at a time."
After a rough start at
Auburn, Kutch's attitude
has really paid off.
"Things here are going
real well," said Kutch. "At
first I struggled through a
lot, but I have kept the faith
and have gotten an opportu-
nity to play.
"I am happy with I have
been able to do so far, but
you never know what the
future holds."
One thing the Milton
native has learned is how
big the other bowl game the
Tigers play in each year
actually is.
"Here in Alabama you
are either born an Auburn
or Bama fan," said Kutch.
"It is good that we still have
those bragging rights.
But the ultimate goal is
going to the bowl game.
"Coming from a pro-
grain like Auburn, it is pret-
ty much expected to go to a
big bowl game," said
Kutch. "But we work hard
and train year round.
"Here it is school and
football 24-7 and the bowl
game is a way to repaid for
all the hard work we have
done the past six months."
There is much more to
kicking that most think and
Kutch knows he could be
one play away.
"I always try to be
ready because there is a lot
more to kicking that meets
the eye," said Kutch.
"There is a lot to it when
you look at the snap, the
hold, and the guys up front
blocking.
"It is definitely not a
one man thing."
Game
Continued From Page One
yard field goal.
It remained 3-0 until just
before the end of the first quar-
ter when Milton's Dustin Land
decided to keep the ball 'on an
option play and went 57 yards
for the touchdown with just 27
seconds remaining in the quar-
ter.
Land finished the game
with 90 yards passing and 77
yards. rushing to earn the
Offensive MVP Award for the
East Squad.
"This is awesome," said
Land, who has verbally com-
mitted to play football next sea-
son at Iowa State. "I have
played on this field many times
and it is nice to leave here this
time as a winner.
"You always want to win
your last football game and I got
to win my last game as a quar-
terback'."
But Myles, the West
Offensive MVP, wasn't done as
he helped lead his team back
into the lead on a 7 yard run
with over eight minutes left in
the half. Myles finished the
night with 69 yards on 10 car-
ries.
Kooi got the West into a
threatening position until he
coughed up the football on a
sack that was recovered by
Pace's Andy Dagleish.
Dagleish is.one of the many
talented players in the area who
are still looking for an opportu-
nity at the next lev6l.
"If the opportunity comes it
comes," said Dagleish. "It was
fun to come out and play with
everyone in this game.
"We all definitely bonded
over the week."
That turnover proved to be
costly as Land and the East
needed only four plays to find
the end zone.
The two big plays on the
drive was a 33 yard completion
from Land to Crestview's James
Peacock, which set up Pace's
Airi Johnson's seven yard run
for the final touchdown of the
game with 5:17 remaining.
Johnson finished the game
with 20 yards on 10 carries to be
the second leading rusher for
the East.
In the second half Kooi and
the West tried a flea flicker
which failed as Hendricks, the
East Defensive MVP, played
his position perfectly in the sec-
ondary to knock down Kooi's
pass.
"I had no idea I would be
getting an award like this," said
Hendricks, who has signed to
pitch next year for the
University of Alabama. "I only
know one way to play the game
and this is a great way to go out
and finish my football career on
a winning note.
"I am definitely glad I got
the opportunity to play in this
game; it was a blast."
Hendricks had a particular-
ly long week before the holi-
days as he not only practiced
each day for the football game,
but also saw a great deal of
action on the Jay basketball
team during their holiday tour-
nament.
The West Defensive MVP
was Pensacola High's Jasper
Heard.
Kooi finished the game
with 102 yards passing to lead
all quarterbacks, but was minus
11 yards on the ground.
Peacock was the top receiv-
er for the East with 45 yards on
three catches, as the West
defense seemed focused on
shutting down Pace's Riley
Hawkins, who registered over
200 yards against Nease in the
Class 4A Semi-Finals.
