Another bridge between Pace, Pensacola?

Residents gather to create 'vision, plan' of community's wants and desires

By PAMELA HOLT
Press Gazette Staff Writer
A new bridge connecting
Pace and Pensacola, more infra-
structure, a Post Office, a shop-
ping mall, and spreading com-
mercial business to Berryhill
Road...these issues were dis-

cussed, at the Pace Area Plan
Kick-off meeting held Monday
night at Pace High's Freedom
Hall. The room was filled with
more than 100 residents con-
cerned :for the future of the
community.
Beckie Faulkenberry, Santa
Rosa County Planning Director,

says the purpose of the meeting
was to find "common threads"
among the residents and bring
them together:
District. 1 Santa Rosa
County Commissioner Tom
Stewart ai-s the most important
thing about the gathering is to.
discover' what's most essential

to Pace residents-what their
goals are and what actions \% Ill
best lead to those goals.
Stewart says he and fellow
commissioner Don Salter have
watched the rapid growth of
Pace and both agree the meet-
ing provides an opportunity to.
develop a plan for the future of

the community.
Randy Jorgenson, Planning
and Development contractor for
Santa Rosa County asked the
grdupp-"Stand if you were
born and reared in Pace com-
inunti." Seven stood.
"Thi.; is one '.,..d\ to demon-
strate change-everyone else

(seated) decided to move
here... change is going to hap-
pen," says Jorgenson, "we must
manage change."
Jorgenson says there will be
more Pace town meetings-a'
way to gauge where to go in the
next five, 10, and 20 years.

SMARTCOP?

Sheriff says new concept bears

little resemblance to old program

By LYNNE HOUGH
(P3 ., 1i.:-, ,f L h,,,
Rumors say it is the return
of SMARTCOP, but Sheriff
Wendell Hall says it isn't so.
Productivity was the key-
word with the SMARTCOP
piogra.ii, originally operated
under the admiinistiation of pre-
vious Santa Rosa County
Sheriff Jerry Brown: Some lay
the blame for Brown's reelec-
lion defeat at the feet of the
SMARTCOP program-highly
unpopular with many citizen.;
\ ho called the program little
more than a "quota system."
Proactive sharing of infor-
mation, according to .Hall, is
what his supervisors are doing
.now.
"No," hlie. says. "this is
absolutely not SMARTCOP."

Pace area gets a taste

The Milton Panthers won their first district football title since 2003 when they defeated Pace (10-7) in the second quarter of a three-team
shootout Monday night. Milton's Matt Shouppe kicked the winning field goal with two seconds remaining. Pace, which defeated Escambia
(17-14) Friday, is the district runner-up and will also advance to the regional quarterfinals on Nov. 10. For more on Monday's shootout, see

teachers-this amount included
the State's "matching" funds.
Kyle Holley, Santa Rosa
County Education Foundation
board member, says the. new

goal for the Foundation's 2007-
2008 school year is $30.10i0 In
meeting this goal locally, allot-
ments can be changed from the
current amount of $500 to
$1,000-the original amount
just a few years ago.
Stressing the need to raise
money for the grants, Purdon
remembers when .the grant
money was given in $1,000
allotments--and, when the
Foundation cut' the money in
half to "spread the wealth."
She says, "This shows how
many teachers need money for
the creative and innovative

ideas of teaching. We want to
fund these projects and get the
money into their hands."
Currently, teachers can only
apply for grant money every
other year, according to Purdon,
but the Foundation wants that to
change-and it will, according
to Holley...when the goal is
met,'.
"Hard working teachers
with creative and industrious
ideas shouldn't have to wait
every other year to receive help
for their classrooms," says
Holley.

Official refuses to let LifeFlight helicopter land

By LYNNE HOUGH
Press Gazette Staff Writer
A Santa Rosa County fire
department paramedic and fire
chief refused to allow
LifeFlight to land despite
requests from Rural Metro
Ambulance paramedics. The
incident involved a critically ill
10-week-old child.
According to communica-
tion records from the Santa
Rosa County E911 Center, the
Sunday night situation is on
tape. A Midway firefighter-
paramedic, on the scene at the
time, can be heard refusing to
land LifeFlight over the E911
radio, telling the dispatch center
the child can go by ground
ambulance.
Rural Metro paramedics on
the scene used a cell phone to
call the dispatch center and
arrange privately to meet
LifeFlight at the Gulf Breeze
Hospital.
The incident began, accord-
ing to E911 reports, when a call
came into the center of an infant
having difficulty breathing.
That was at 9:42 p.m., accord-
ing to radio records.
At 9:52 p.m., a Midway
Fire Department truck with cer-
tified medical personnel arrived
at the child's location. Ten sec-
onds later, Chief Steve
Dementer arrived. Four minutes
later, Rural Metro Ambulance
pulled onto the scene.
At 10 p.m., a radio trans-
mission was recorded of the
Midway Chief canceling
LifeFlight and refusing to grant
the helicopter a place to land.
At 10 p.m., in a recorded radio
transmission, a Rural Metro
paramedic is heard asking for
LifeFlight to continue to the
scene.
At 10:01, the Midway chief
comes back on the radio stating
"per protocol, I am canceling
LifeFlight." That's when Rural
Metro paramedics went to their
cell phone and called the dis-
patch center, bypassing the
radio the Midway Fire
Department personnel altogeth-

more about what's causing it,
whose district lines is it cross-
ing. It's a communication
between staff and myself.
"It's not about putting quo-
tas on patrol."
Ever since Hurricane Ivan
struck more than two years ago,
the crime stats have been slow-
ly climbing. Hall blames some
of it on growth, and some of it
on an increase in population.
Overcrowding was an issue
when SMARTCOP was creat-
ed, along with long hours for
Clerk's Office employees. The
workload, which many specu-
late was created by demands on
deputies to perform, diminished
as the program was changed
under the new administration.
SMARTCOP was touted as
community policing program,
and encouraged productivity in
deputies. It offered a measure-
ment system by which deputies
lbgged their work. While allow-
iog administrators an opportu-
nity to track the activities of
patrol officers, some claimed
the program encouraged offi-
4ers to write tickets and focus
c}n traffic because those activi-
ties offered 'easy' proof of pro-
ductivity.
i

At 10:24 p.m., LifeFlight
advised the dispatch center they
were on-scene at Gulf Breeze
Hospital. At 10:35 p.m., the
ambulance met LifeFlight at the
helicopter pad at Gulf Breeze
Hospital and transferred the
patient for transport to Sacred
Heart.
Midway Fire Chief Steve
Dementer says he was on scene,
but was not in contact with the
patient. He says his decisions
were made based on what his
paramedic, treating the child at
the scene, told him.
The Midway Fire
Department is an ALS
(Advanced Life Support) sta-
tion and has certified para-
medics on every shift, accord-
ing to Dementer. Most fire
departments in Santa Rosa
County are not ALS.
He says, at one time, his
district was "looking at" pro-
viding its own ambulance serv-
ice. He says that's not the case
now.
Dementer says he believes
the incident is being blown out
of proportion, saying the family
of the child was consulted and
did not want LifeFlight.
He notes, "We never got
any decision to land."
However, tapes of the radio
transmissions during the inci-
dent tell a different story. At one
point, Dementer can be heard
telling the dispatcher, "You can
cancel the helicopter."

The dispatcher comes back
a minute or two later and says,
"The EMS supervisor...is
requesting to know if you are
refusing to land LifeFlight."
Dementer answers, "That's
affirmative. The child can go by
ground unit. The child is sta-
ble."
Rural Metro Operations
spokesman Ken Daughtery says
the initial decision to use
LifeFlight or not is up to the
paid provider of emergency
services in Santa Rosa
County-Rural Metro.
"It should be our call, not
someone else's," Daughtery
notes.
Dementer says he is having
the incident "looked at closely"
because it involves one of his
paramedics. He says, "We're
reviewing with Medical
Director Dr. James Leker to
make sure all policies were fol-
lowed."
He says the request for
LifeFlight'to continue after he
had originally cancelled the
unit, was made by a Rural
Metro paramedic who was not
on the scene. He says, accord-
ing to the paramedic with the
patient at the time, LifeFlight
was not needed.
Dementer says when he
asked the Rural Metro para-
medic after she arrived on the
scene if she wanted to fly the
patient, she said "no"! But offi-
cials with Rural Metro's main
office say their paramedic made
the call that LifeFlight was
needed after arriving on the
scene, "...that the patient was
going to need quicker transport
than we can provide."
When asked if there was a
power struggle between
Midway Fire Department and
Rural Metro, Dementer said,
"no comment".
To the same question, Rural
Metro spokesperson Nikki
"Ghast said, "Obviously, we
want to make sure we are all on
the same page to provide the
best services to the communi-
ty."
Dementer says he's made
contact with the family of .-the

child and "They're not upset at
all."
Candy McGuyre, public
relations manager for
LifeFlight says, "(It is the)
paramedic with the ground
ambulance (who) decides
whether the patient is best
served by being airlifted to the
destination hospital."

PAGE 4A

It seems reasonable
Challenging the constitutionality of GPS mon-
itoring and pre-trial release, and assuming such
legal "tracking" of defendants is a violation of
their civil rights is, in our opinion, absurd.
Judge Paul A. Rasmussen ruled correctly and
in the best interest of the safety of all Santa Rosans
recently by rejecting such a claim after Public
Defender Tony Henderson filed a frivolous motion
resulting in the hearing.
Henderson claimed Santa Rosa County Sheriff
Wendell Hall's GPS monitoring program violated
the civil rights of those ordered by the courts to be
closely monitored pending their trial date.
We believe, as do many others, that Sheriff
Hall's acceptance of the responsibility for elec-
tronic monitoring of defendants on GPS and
House Arrest was an absolutely necessary tool that
seriously addresses public safety concerns.
As we're all fully aware, there have been cases
where pre-trial defendants have committed serious
crimes while awaiting trial for previous criminal
activities.
It is impossible to incarcerate every person
who has been charged with a crime while they
await their day in court. And we firmly believe our
Sheriff's Office is the best agency to monitor this
necessary GPS tracking system.
The three-point argument the public defender
posed to Judge Rasmussen include the fact that
Sheriff Hall's GPS monitoring system had no stan-
dard fee and, instead, used a sliding scale based on
a defendant's income.
The second objection surrounded the ability of
the Sheriff and/or pre-trial release officer to moni-
tor "movement of the defendant while on GPS."
The Sheriff was given the authority to reject a
person from GPS based on specific criteria. This
third objection was based on the fact the placement
is court-ordered by a judge, yet can be turned
away.
Judge Rasmussen did issue a recommendation
for Hall to "renegotiate the fee structure for the
GPS Program" consistent with prior representa-
tions made by the monitoring, provider or imple-
ment a flat fee for monitoring services.
What adjustments Sheriff Hall does make to
his GPS monitoring program should not jeopard-
ize the effectiveness of the system, and we do con-
cur with Hall's belief that not all defendants should
be eligible for the program-based on criteria that
we know includes previous criminal records and
the severity of the alleged offense.
We also believe those defendants who choose
to participate should bare the cost of monitoring.
Taxpayers should not be expected to cover those
operating costs.
There is no fail-safe procedure to absolutely
insure some defendants won't find a way around
the GPS system, but we are confident the Sheriff's
Office can-and does-the best job it can in keep-
ing up with the activities of those awaiting trial for
the charges they face.
Remember, GPS monitoring was devised, in
the first place, to allow those who might otherwise
be considered too risky to release, to have a way to
be outside the confines of the jail until their trial. If
it were not for GPS, many of these folks would
have to choice but to wait for trial.
We would think they would gladly accept
whatever restrictions are necessary if it means they
don't have to sit in a jail cell.
Are we missing the point? Let us know what
you think.

How to improve our farms

FM: CYNTHIA CLEMENTS
Dear Editor:

"Res ipsa loquitur, sed quid in infernos dicet?"
"The devil made me do it," should be Marka,
Foley's excuse, according to Rick Scarborough. How
unoriginal of Scarborough, president of Vision
America, a 'Christian activist organization based in
Lufkin, Texas, to raise the "devil" defense for Foley,
the page-poaching panderer.
Foley is the recently resigned-in-disgrace
Republican congressman from Florida, exchanger of
sexually explicit communications with underage male
congressional pages, and current resident of rehab, the
American hideout du jour for wimps and whiners.
Scarborough is just one of too many self-appointed
prophets of the higher being of his choice (Does God
really need another spokesman?) leading the faithful
to the polls to vote Republican, the blind leading the
stupid.
A little sushi, a little sun, a pedicure or two, a mea
culpa and more, and Foley will emerge a redeemed
soul-saved by his power divine. Foley will be sprung
from rehab when this brouhaha settles down and the
November elections are a distant, but hopefully not a
futile, memory for his party.
Republicans find atonement in the public spot-
light for their sexual sins. After all, conservatives have
a monopoly on morality (said tongue in cheek) but
Democrats are doomed to political purgatory for their
indiscretions. "I did not have sexual relations with that
woman, Ms. Lewinsky," our former president said.
It's Bill Clinton's most memorable quip of his presi-
dency, but at least she was a consenting adult, as the
vernacular goes.
Since time began in a garden, or whatever evolu-
tionary theory to which you subscribe, human beings
have been blaming the next-in-line guy, or gal. Eve
accused the serpent for enticing her to eat of the tree
of good and evil. Adam impugned Eve--"it's that
woman you gave me, Lord"-for leading him astray
with her cunning. She said, he said--and at that point,
Adam and Eve were without options of where to point
fingers--but not, so for Foley. Foley has a list of con-
venient scapegoats, including a former clergyman
who allegedly molested him as a youth and yes, the
all-encompassing but entirely trite boogey man, the
political left.
It's me; it's me, 0, Lord; standing in the need of
somewhere to pass the buck. For Foley, we need look
no further than liberals, according to Scarborough. In
a recent email to ministry supporters, Scarborough
said, "Liberals have created the climate in which such
sickness flourishes," referring to Foley's conduct.
Whew, I was Worried there for a moment that
Scarborough was going to start sermonizing about
personal responsibility and calling Foley down from
the pulpit, demanding an accounting before a political
excommunication. It's the three-step program for
Republicans to find forgiveness: Repent, confess your
sins, and ye shall be saved--or in this case, returned to
the conservative fold.
Scarborough has had a divine revelation from the
holy one himself, or herself: "It's not just about Mark
Foley, my friends, but the atmosphere in which such
creatures thrive." Line up the Boy Scouts, gay mar-
riage advocates, and reproductive rights supporters,

.44a

and brand them with the scarlet "L," for all things lib-
eral, and bum them at the stake.
Without that insidious tolerance and accept-
ance-far better hypocrisy, presumably-preached
by the left, Foley would still be in the closet and that
would be OK, according to Scarborough. After all,
doesn't the Bible say that sins done in private will
never be revealed? (It's a rhetorical question, in case
you are wondering about the answer). '
"It's that culture that must be challenged and that
ethos that must be exposed and opposed,"
Scarborough warns. That's right, now is the time,
when "pastors must encourage people of faith to take
their Biblical convictions into the polling places, vot-
ing the rascals out," urges Scarborough. This nation
needs, Scarborough suggests, "God-fearing, Christ-
honoring, values candidates," and he calls for "a
national moral revival."
The way to combat child sexual predators, obvi-
ously, is to elect more Republicans to office to protect
our national standards of "Christian" morality. But
isn't Foley a Republican?
Maybe someone should teach Scarborough how
to read Latin. The thing speaks for itself, and we
know what the bleep it is saying.

Just a note of thanks...

FM: JO COBB
Dear Editor:

This letter is written simply to thank you for run-
ning an article on my parents' 70th wedding anniver-
sary on October 4.
It was a special day for Archie and Bessie Smith,
not only because they have been married for 70 years,
but also because the publicity caused them so much
joy.
So many people they had not heard from in years
came or called and some people called that they had
never known...just to say 'congratulations.'
What a wonderful day they had and your publica-
tion was an integral part of their enjoyment.
Thank you so much for publishing their celebra-
tion. Youdid a good job and are appreciated.

Are you losing your rights?

FM: PATRICIA SWANSON
Dear Editor:

What is happening in our country?
How is it that a Secretary of State, now running
for Governor, is able to disenfranchise 1.2 million
voters-all Democrats?
It was done in a very sneaky way so these voters
who have just lost their right to vote won't even know
it until they get to the voter registration table.
This is happening in Ohio (surprise), Tennessee,
Missouri and one other state.
If those in power need to cheat to keep that power,
do they deserve positive election results?
Many of us have now lost one of our most essen-
tial freedoms-the right to vote.
Shame on those perpetrating this crime.

You Spoke Out,,

Santa Rosa...
Saturday, 11:03 p.m.
Hi, this is Kimberly. So
Elaine thinks Santa Rosa teachers
don't, deserve a pay raise. Elaine,
you are invited to go through my
day, then go home and do several
more hours. To say we only world,
nine months of the week is just
plain laughable. Are the majority
of your weekends spent grading
papers? Mine our. Believe it ohi
not, we don't have summers off a4
you imply. We spend our sum,
mers attending classes and
preparing for the upcoming
school year. So, Elaine, what day
can I put you down for?

Saturday, 6:26 p.m.
I just have a question about
the "recent births." Why do yq9d
separate the twins...twin A and
twin B? If they are twins, thq
should be together. I just don.
understand that.

Saturday, 3:52 p.m.
My name is Jim. This is fot
Elaine and her complaints about
teachers' raises. True, some may
not deserve it, but most doi'
Teachers have to instruct while, a
the same time, deal with the tem-
perament and attitude the children
bring from home. By the way, I
am not a teacher.

Friday, 11:15 a.m.
I think, if we look at the air
traffic control incident that just
happened in Pensacola, the major
accident that just happened in
Lexington, Ky. and the things not
reported, you can see the FAA has
big problems. I think we can see
an increase in fuel prices after the
election and a continued increase
in the insurance premiums. I think
w6 need to get rid of the incum-
bents.

Via email
October 28
This is a response to Elaine's
comments in Saturday's paper
about the teachers' eight percent
raise. Elaine, you are obviously
a very ignorant person. If you
spent any time keeping up with
education you would know that
teachers are grossly uflderpaid.
What you fail to take into account
is that, although our contract is
for ten months, many teachers
have to take a summer job in
order to make ends meet. You
also fail to take into account that,
even though our pay stops at 3
p.m., all teachers work outside of
the eight, hour work day and are
not compensated for it. My wife
and I are both teachers with two
small children and we struggle
each month to pay the bills.
Many sacrifices are made and
there are no luxuries like most
other college-educated. profes-
sionals enjoy. Elaine, you seem
to be blinded to the fact that
teachers have the most important
job in the world and yet we have
to fight for every tiny bit that we
get. We should have gotten more
than eight percent.

Topaz -Many Colors For
November
The birthstone for November is
Topaz. The most important color
of genuine topaz is Sherry Topaz,
so called because of its resem-
blance to the color of Sherry wine.
In this same color family are the
orange, orange-red, yellow,
orange-yellow and golden yellow
varieties of gem topaz. Most topaz
sold in stores today are of the
above colors. However, light blue
and very light blue topaz stones
often rival the finest aquamarines.
Much rarer but equally beautiful is
the color of topaz known as the
pink topaz. This includes all the
light-red to light violetish-red
stones. Any of the colors of topaz
are considered to be the birthstone
for November, so that the
Novemberite is indeed fortunate in
being able to match her birthstone
to her complexion or the color of
her hair or eyes.
Topaz fanciers have collected
huge and very lovely stones for us
to see. Blues, reds and yellows are
on display at the Smithsonian
Institute in Washington, D.C. as
well as the American Museum of
Natural History in New York.

Dear Pastor Gallups, "What is the age of accountability in the
Bible? At what age is .one considered an adult? At what age
should a man or young man not be "taught" by a woman? L.S.,
Milton
Dear L.S., You have actually asked three different questions
here. I will answer them in the same order that you asked them.
If by accountability you mean at what age is someone personal-
ly accountable to God for their own salvation.. .then, the answer
in the Bible seems to be at the age that they're fully capable of
understanding sin, the Gospel and the need for salvation. This is
a bit different for different people.
Even though the scripture is clear that ALL (even babies) have
a sin nature and are "guilty" before a completely Holy
God... there also seems to be the clear understanding that God
does not hold accountable those who are incapable of believ-
ing and understanding (i.e., babies, small children, mentally
handicapped, etc.) (Read I John 2:2 and 2 Samuel 12:21ff.) The
Jewish custom for the age of accountability is the age of 13.
However there is no Biblical command for all times to this end.
At what age is one considered an adult Biblically? This also is
not stated in the form of a commandment. We find some pas-
sages that allowed only those who were 18 and older to fight in
the armies of God's people. We also know that a person was not
considered "adult" enough to teach in the Synagogues until the
age of 30. This is why Jesus did not begin His ministry until He
was 30.. The third question that you ask usually is asked as a
result of Paul's statement in 1 Timothy 2:12, which states, "I do
not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man..."
(NIV) The context of this passage certainly is not that women
are incapable of "teaching" or even "forbidden" from teaching
in any form. In.fact'it is the Biblical responsibility of women to
assist in the teaching of children and south, especially. The con-
text of "teaching" here is the LEADING or PASTORING of a
church in spiritual main ers and direction. This responsibility was
given to the man If a person is able to comprehend their need
for salvation and the clear gospel message then they are old
enough to be saved.

17 Jay looks to win the 'War on Highway 4'Friday

By BILL GAMBLING
PG Sports Editor
They call it the 'War on
Highway 4', but to some it
means a lot more.
"This is a big game for a
couple of reasons," said Jay
head coach Elijah Bell. "One is
the fact Baker and Jay are big
rival and another is this is a
chance for our seniors to go out
on a winning note."
Last season the Royals'
seniors went out on a winning
note as Jay won easily 32-10.
This year Jay (3-6) has been
in every game this season
except for two Crestview and
defending 1-A Champion Port

St. Joe while Baker (6-3) has
rebounded from a 0-9 mark last
season. ,
"This is a game for pride,"
said Bell. "It would also be
great to send the seniors out
with a win and end the year on
that note."
But despite his reluctance
to admit it, the game could
mean a little more personally
for Bell that he is letting on as
the 7 p.m. kickoff approaches..
"It is not that big of a deal,"
said Bell, who graduated fromi
Baker in 1971. "Most people
weren't even around back when
I played at Baker and graduat-
ed."
But what about seeing the

crimson and gold he wore when
he was younger.
'"I have looked across a
football field and seen so many
different colors it doesn't really
matter," said Bell. "You just

kind of get that way after 30
years of coaching."
During the preseason kick-
off games across the state Jay
defeated Baker o34-26 as they
took advantage of five Gator
turnovers.
"That game was 12 weeks
ago," said Bell. "So that doesn't
make any difference going into
Friday.
"They didn't play three of
their best players and we stayed
in the same defense the entire
night."

Patriots get three-peat over Panthers

Page 2-B

7Pace is victorious

in must-win situation

By BILL GAMBLING
PG Sports Editor
Pace did what they had to
do Friday, win..
And they did so in their
typical dramatic fashion by
driving the length of the field in
just over. seven minutes as they
won 21-14, to win the Battle of
the'Bronze for the third consec-
utive year.
The Patriots (6-3) went up
14-0 early in the first half, but
Milton took control of the
-momentum.
Some would have thought
it was a replay of the Gulf
Breeze game when the Patriots
punted as .Friday's win caught
the ball and :pushed it out of
bounds four yards from the
original line of scrimmage.
Milton (7-3) took over first
and 10 at the Pace 21.'
After losing a yard on the
first play from scrimmage,
Jeremy Tolbert found Ledre
Bender for a .22 yard touch-
down with. 7:23 remaining as
the game was tied at 14-14 fol-
lowing Matt Shouppe's point
after.
.Pace then launched the
drive with sophomore quarter-
back Aaron Munoz at the helm.
Despite a holding penalty
midway through the drive Pace
chewed up the yardage and got
in position to score.
Sealing the success of the
drive was an 11-yard pass from
Munoz to. senior Chris Cooke
setting up first and goal for the
Pats at the Milton 4.
On second and goal from
the one Munoz kept the ball
and plunged in with just 17.5
seconds remaining in the game.

Martinez added the point
after and Pace was up 21-14 as
the air left Haywood Hanna
Panther Stadium.
"I knew they could do it,"
said Pace head coach Mickey
Lindsey. "I am very proud of
how this team came together
and managed the long drive.
"We lost the momentum in
the third quarter, but found it
by the end of the fourth." .
Most of the momentum
Lindsey and the Patriots had at
the start of the game was
behind the running of former
Panther Tre' Daniels.
Daniels accounted for 38 of
his team high 96 yards in the
Patriots first drive of the game.
"It felt good to come out
and run the ball like this
tonight," said Daniels, who
also had a five-yard reception
from Munoz for a touchdown.
"The offensive line was open-
ing up some great holes."
After Daniels' dramatic
five yard touchdown reception
to make it 14-0 in favor of
Pace, Milton appeared to wake
up from their offensive slum-
ber.
Christian Woods sparked
the.drive with a 27-yard carry
into Pace territory to start the
drive.
Then Tolbert went to work
through the air hitting Marco
Dixon on an 11-yard comple-
tion and capping the successful
drive with a 22-yard strike to
Anthony Loomis.
"We just started slow," said
Milton head coach Mike
McMillion. "I, don't know the
cause for it, but we played pret-
ty well during the middle of the

Pace's Chris Cooke makes a huge over-the-shoulder-catch of a pass from Aaron Munoz on third down as the Patriots went 74 yards in just
over seven minutes to answer an earlier Milton score. Munoz would punch the ball in two plays later giving Pace a 21-14 lead and their third
consecutive win for the first time in this 24 year rivalry. The win also forced a three-team playoff between Escambia, Pace, and Milton on
Monday.

game.
"Then at the end we kind of
faded again."
The key for the Patriots
was the play calling along ithi
the play of Munoz.
"I have never heard any-
thing that loud in my entire
life," said the sophomore quar-
terback. "The offensitme line

blocked real well and on that
first drive the coaches call the
pli' s to help me get comfort-
able and calm down.
"I was really surprised by
the crowd and the loudness."

his field goal, but Pace wanted to
ice the kicker who just returned
from a non-football knee injury.
"I knew they would call a
timeout to ice me," said Shouppe,
who last year kicked a 50-plus
yard field goal to give Milton a
win over Pine Forest.
As Shouppe approached the
ball Haywood Hanna Panther
Stadium was quite for the first
time, even if for just a second, as
they watched the kick split the
uprights with two seconds
remaining.
From the very start of the
first quarter Milton seemed more
determined than they did Friday
when they lost to Pace 21-14,
which setup this three-team
shootout.
"The kids wanted this one,"
said McMillion. "Pace and
Escambia are both good teams.
"But after Pace scored all I
was hoping for was field position
,so we could get Shouppe as close
as we could."
Field position is what led to
Milton first score as the Panthers
were force to punt on their open-
ing drive after Jeremy Tolbert

was sacked by Chris Cooke for
an 11 yard loss on third down.
But Bear Comer could not
find the handle on Shouppe's
punt and the Panthers William
Beasley recovered the ball on the,
Pace nine.
Three plays later Woods
punched the ball in with 6:31
remaining as Milton went up 7-0.
Pace advanced to the second
quarter by defeating Escambia
17-14 in four overtimes after
both teams went scoreless in the
12-minute quarter.
In the third overtime Pace
was stopped at the one on fourth
and goal from the two.
Escambia on their possession
trotted out kicker Matt Carstens,
who was going for a 27-yard field
goal for the win.
But Pace and Drew
Cumberland, who flew in from
the left side, had other ideas.
Cumberland got a hand on
the kick, which kept Pace alive.
Riding that momentum
Pace's defense held and forced
the Gators to attempt a 20-yard
field goal in the fourth overtime.
But this time Eric Lane
blocked it.

Pace's Riley Hawkins is seen making a big catch during the first quar-
ter of the shootout against Escambia County on third down, but the
.Patriots would need four overtimes to beat the Gators 17-14.
Press Gazette photo by Bill Gamblin

Pace needed a field goal to
win and after gaining five yards
on the first two downs, they sent
in Martinez who split the
uprights on a 22-yard field goal
for the win.
In the first two overtimes
Pace and Escambia matched each
other score for score as Louie
Wise punched the ball in from the

one and Munoz found Hawkins
on a 13-yard pass.
The Patriots threatened to
score, but would fumble on the
Gators' four, with 1:10 remain-
ing.

Continued From Page One
But what does make a dif-
ference for Jay is the loss of
Tyler DeGraaf.
"Losing Tyler for the game
hurts us bad," said Bell. "Last
week we were working and
held out a little hope he would
be back with us.
"On Saturday we learned
differently and we are going to
go to work on converting some-
one to running back."
DeGraaf, who bruised his
knee against Port St. Joe, is the
third back to go down to injury
as J.D. Diamond (broken leg)
and Rush Hendricks (knee)
went down while DeGraaf was
out with an earlier injury.
"With Tyler out we are now
needing to replace three differ-
ent players basically," said Bell.
"He was not only a running
back but also started defense
and handled the kicking for us.
"We are definitely going to
go for two every time; no doubt
about it."
This could be very critical
as Baker won back in 2004 and
2005 by no more than three
points, while Jay's recent wins

as been by large margins, which'
include a 38-0 win back in
2002.
Bell realizes there are
things he can and cannot con-
trol.
"During a game you want a
good effort and our kids have
done that all season long by
never quitting," said Bell. "We
have been in every game this
season but two and the chips
fell our way some times when
they didn't others."
For Bell in such a big game
he has to keep things balanced.
"You have to have a good'
week of practice and let them
know you can't win or lose a:
game in the first quarter," said:
Bell. "The game has to be bal-
anced, which is why we play
four quarters.
"The key is trying to exe-
cute your game plan among the
emotions and all the other fac-
tors these young people face
and play on an even keel."

Halloween special as most
players had a nightmare miss-
ing the two high school games,
but when the dust settled it was
Carol Daughtery who won with
a week of 8-2.
The games she missed were
the two high school games,
which put her ahead of the other
56 players this week.
Most players this past week
thought that Milton .would
defeat Pace and the Crestview
would maul Navarre, but as you
can tell they got fooled in more
ways than one.
Martha Chavers, Douglas
Filbert, Neil McDonald, Jake

McDonald, Joseph McDonald,
Barbara Moravek, Wade Miller,
Michael Jaquish, Mike Boddy,
Mick Tate, and Rusty Jones all
finished at 7-3.
The pack at 6-4 over the
weekend were Donna Miller,
Keith Kirchharr, Glenn
Chavers, Anthony- Jobe, David
Bohannon, Larry Culpepper,
Mark Hodges, Jeremy Brown,
Wayne Davis, Bryan Hathaway,
Dawn Young, F.C. Brake Jr.,
Henry L. Swift, Dewayne
Queen, and Letha McCaskill.
Don Musgrave, Frank
Mason, Harold Henderson,
Ronald Taylor, Michelle Jobe,
Jill Hood, Jimmie Hood,
LynRae Johnson, Jerry Miller,
,Gary Upshaw, Austin Worley,
Rulan McWaters, Murray
Rutledge, Paul C. Tate,
Burdette Miller, Troy Jobe, and
Paul Hinson went 5-5.
In the next group at 4-6
were R.D. Williams, Martin

Brake, Shawn Hill, William
Griffin, J. Scott Terry, Ashley
McWaters, Becky Jones, and
Gray Weaver.
Rounding out the players at
3-7 were Gloria Mason, Larry
Gibson, Bema Faust, Mayhew
Brake, and Walter M. States.
Despite going 5-5
Musgrave still remains atop the
leader board, but is just two
percentage points or two games
ahead of Mike Boddy.
Boddy is currently in sec-
ond at 71.1 percentage points
while Gary Upshaw is third at
71 percent and Keith Kirchharr
and Glenn Chavers are tied for
fourth at 70 percent.
Shawn Hill, Henry L.
Swift, and Dewayne Queen are
tied in sixth place at 69 percent.
This week could get very
interesting as well with the
'War on Highway 4' highlight-
ing the high school side, while
the college games include LSU

at Tennessee, Maryland at
Clemson, Boston College at
Wake Forest, Oklahoma at
Texas A&M, Missouri at
Nebraska, Virginia at Florida
State, Virginia Tech at Miami,
and Georgia at Kentucky.
With as tight as some of the
weeks have been please be
reminded to put down the total
combined score you feel it will
be when Mississippi State visits
Alabama.
It should get very interest- -
ing as the football contest
winds down, but we are not
done just yet and you still have
a chance to win.
Remember the deadline to
enter is 5 p.m. on Friday or
postmarked no later than Nov.

Pace and Milton brave .

brisk Saturday morning

N Cross country season ends on positives

By BILL GAMBLING
PG Sports Editor
There was a lot of running
Saturday at the Escambia
Equestrian Center as teams
were looking for the opportuni-
ty to advance to Saturday's
regional meet to be held at the
Miccosukee Greenway in
Tallahassee.
Sweeping Saturday's meet
was Tallahassee Chiles, while
Pace and Milton made very
strong showings.
Chiles took the girls title
with 37 points followed by Ft.
Walton Beach (68), Leon
County (106), Washington
(107) and Tallahasse Lincoln
(114) to round out the top five.
Pace finished eighth overall
with 190 points, while Milton
finished 12th with 322.
Leading the way for the
Lady Patriots was Alex Guenter
in 29th with a time of 22:15.31,
while Ariane Carr led Milton by
posting a time of 22:28.79 for a
35th place finish.
"All of my girls ran well,
but I didn't have anyone
advance to regionals," said
Pace girls' coach Clint Martin.
"Most of my girls posted their
fastest times of the season, but
it was not enough.
"We are in a very strong
district; maybe the strongest in
the state."
In the boys competition
Chiles dominated scoring 41
points to win followed by Leon
County (73), Choctaw (75),
Washington (111) and Navarre
(137) to complete the top five.
Milton finished the meet in
llth with 329 points, while
Pace was 14th with 383 points.
The Panthers Jackson
Moore posted a time of
17:56.98 to finish 29th overall,
while Pace's Tim Keebler led
the Patriots finishing 71st in a
time of 19:53.78.
Moore didn't qualify, but
Milton boys' coach Joe
Moberly was very pleased with
the effort.
"We felt like we had an out-
side shot at qualifying," said
Moberly. "We just didn't run
well enough to advance."
Next season the Panthers
will be without Moore, Ray
Wells, and John Quireroz.
"Graduation will be a big
hit for us losing these three sen-
iors," said Moberly. "Ray ran
an personal best on Saturday,
but these three seniors did a lot
for the team."

The Jay girls' cross country team celebrates its runner-up finish in District 1-A following Thursday's race
in Tallahassee.

Milton runners Jackson Moore and Ray Wells are seen competing for

they ran even though it wasn't
quite fast enough," said Denny.
"All of our runners will be
returning except for Kemp who
is a senior.
"Each of my guys
improved their times from last
season even though Saturday's
run wasn't their best times."

There was a lot more than just bicycles built for two Saturday at the Blackwater Heritage Trail Visitors Center as the first ever Blackwater
Bike Fest was held. There were bikes on display and being ridden of all styles, shapes and sizes. There were even a couple of spills as some
bikers tried their hand at some tricks and stunts during the day.

Sinclair Broadcasting, owner of WEAR is demanding
millions of dollars from Mediacom and our customers
in order to continue carrying this and their other
stations.

We have successfully negotiated retransmission
agreements for virtually all of the other commercial
broadcast stations in the area. Sinclair is demanding
much more than what any of Ihe other broadcast
stations have requested, even stations wilh ratings
much higher than WEAR.

Because Mediacom's largest expense is program-
mirng fees, we re always working to keep program-
rming--and our rates--in line Negotiations with
Sinclair have not gone well and as required, we are
giving our customers 30 days notice that Sinclair
may pull WEAR from our line up on December 1,
2006.

We are actively trying to resolve This dispute fairly to
keep WEAR available to you on Mediacom
