departments to raise awareness of the 2010 Census and the impor-
tance to count everyone. The next meeting is scheduled for 11:00
AM on Monday, February 8, at the Courthouse Annex in the County
Commission Meeting Room
At their bi-weekly meeting, the Madison County Complete
Count Census Committee reviewed the status of eight projects
aimed at assisting the citizens of Madison County in responding to
the 2010 Census questionnaires that will be mailed sometime in
March of this year.
"When the questionnaires are not returned, there is a potential
loss of an enormous amount of federal dollars this community
needs." said Patrick Lightcap, who is co-chair of the committee.
"Our objective is to have an accurate and complete count of every
one living in Madison County on April 1, which is Census Day"
The committee is made up of unpaid appointees by the Board
of County Commissioners and volunteers who understand the val-
ue of the census to the local people. They identified a ninth project
that will help educate and encourage participation in the 2010 Cen-
sus, as required by the U.S. Constitution.

Arrested For
Conspiracy To
Commit Murder
Sheriff Ben Stewart reported
that Leroy Dennett Cruce was ar-
rested on Wednesday, January 27,
for the charge of Criminal Solici-
tation to Commit Murder.
According to sources outside
the sheriff's office, the intended
victim was Cruce's wife. Cruce
was a former pastor, deputy and /
school bus driver.
Also arrested was Jeanette
Elaine Thompkins for the charge
of Principal to Solicit Murder.
The case began when Investiga- Leroy Dennett Cruce
tors from the Madison County
Sheriff's Office received informa-
tion from informants regarding
someone in Madison County so-
liciting Hispanics to commit a
murder.
Further investigation re-
vealed that Dennett Cruce, along
with Jeanette Thompkins, were *
the subjects who were trying to
hire someone to commit the mur-
der. Investigators from the Madi-
son County Sheriff's Office then
requested assistance from the

After
Accident

One driver was
charged with careless
driving and having no
proof of insurance after
hitting a parked car in
the Denny's parking lot
on State Road 53 South.
According to a Flori-
da Highway Patrol re-
port, Long C. Chieu, 52,
of Lake Worth, was
southbound in a 2005 In-
ternational truck, in the
parking lot when he
failed to see an unoccu-
pied car, belonging to
Roydon P. James, 71, of
Live Oak.
As Chieu pulled into
the parking space next
to James' vehicle, he
struck James' 2005 Jeep.

Enthusiasm
I went to a motivational seminar on Monday. I
was enthusiastic about attending and when I left, al-
though I was very tired, I was enthusiastic about
having attended.
My memory is a little fuzzy but I believe that it
might have been Coach Bobby Bowden who ex-
plained that the word "enthusiasm" comes from the
Greek words en theos, which means inspired by God
or God-breathed.
Enthusiasm means to be inspired by God; to be
full of the breath of God. Isn't it a fantastic word?
Today, I encourage all of my readers to get en-
thusiastic about their relationship with God, who
gives us the inspiration to be enthused.
I want to encourage everyone to read the Bible,
which tells us to hide its words in our hearts so that
we will not sin against God. (Psalm 119:11)
I want to encourage everyone to pray. The Bible
tells us to pray without ceasing. If you say you don't
have anything to pray about, then pray for me. (I
Thessalonians 5:17, Ephesians 6:18)
I want to encourage everyone to do good deeds
for each other. The Bible tells us that faith without
works is dead. (James 2:20)
Get enthusiastic about reading the Bible, pray-
ing, doing good deeds and about your relationship
with God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy
Ghost. Where do you think true enthusiasm comes
from in the first place?

What Is Going
On In Madison?
What is going on in Madison? I
went to the MCHS Football Banquet
Monday January 18, 2010. The banquet
was very nice and the food was really
good. The quest speaker talked about
growing up with Coach Carroll and
the man he has become. Everything he
said made you think, boy are we
blessed to have a coach like that coach-
ing our boys. Next Ms. Miller gave a
very moving speech singing Coach
Carroll's praises, telling all his accom-
plishments that started back at the
Greenville Middle School leading up
to MCHS Jr. Varsity where he took a
loosing program and turned it into a
winning program. He went on to help
Coach Randy with the Varsity team
until Randy left and Coach Carroll be-
came the Head Football Coach. She
told about how he went beyond coach-
ing to help make them as she put it
"better men, fathers and sons not only
football players". Then I learned
Coach Carroll was not coming back
next year to coach. Why, I asked would
a school let such a man leave a job he
loves and was so good at?? I talked to
some people and was told that the
principal along with two school board
members and two of the coaches of
the football team had teamed up to
make Coach Carroll leave. What a
shame! All the players and parents
that I talked to about him leaving all
agree that they want Coach Carroll to
stay. I know Coach Carroll must be
devastated that all five of the men he
thought were his friends would do this
to him. Hold on to your faith Coach
Carroll; God will see you through this
and he will take cre of you and the
people who did you so wrong.

tend to think we might use
them more in our every-

roots.

en's to Betsy", but unlike
Betsy's heaven, "Land o'
Goshen" was a very real
place).

new home for his father
and his brothers (brothers
who had earlier, sold him
into slavery owing to their
jealousy of him).
Two years into
Egypt's seven year famine
(the famine first predicted
in Pharoah's dream of fat
and skinny cows),
Joseph's family is offered
the "Land of Goshen" as it
was conveniently nestled
between Canaan and
Egypt.
Specifically we're told:
'And thou shalt dwell
in the Land of Goshen,
and thou shalt be near
unto me, thou, and thy
children, and they chil-
dren's children, and thy
flocks, and thy herds, and
all thou hast..."
With five more years
of famine still on the hori-
zon, Joseph implores his
brothers to bring his fa-
ther (Jacob) and move to
the "Land of Goshen"...a
windfall of a gift in light of
the cruel manner in which
his brothers had treated
him earlier. The scriptural
reference is to one of the
Bible's first land grants of-
fered by a once hated
brother, who takes forgive-
ness to a whole new level.
Today's expression is
an exclamation similar to
"Well, for goodness sakes!"
It indicates a good out-
come, coming from the last
thing (or person) you'd ex-
pect.

(Part 3 in a series of Small
Steps to Health and Wealth)
One of the most powerful motivational strate-
gies to improve health and increase wealth is visu-
alization. Many successful people, athletes for
example, report "seeing" what they want to achieve
long before they actually accomplish it. People can
alter their lives just by altering their mindset. Visu-
alization involved getting a picture in your mind of
where you want to be; it is a powerful step in the
process of setting and achieving goals. Unfortu-
nately, it is often ignored.
Dr. Barbara O'Neil, Rutgers Extension Special-
ist in Financial Resource Management says, 'All too
often, people want to do something immediately or
they are focused solely on current problems instead
of picturing where they want to be in the future.
Many people have a fear of the unknown and it
blocks their way to visualizing where they would
like to be in the future.
So, how do you get started visualizing improve-
ments to your health and finances? Start by making
a mental picture of your preferred future. If you
have a weight loss goal, picture yourself fitting into
clothes that you haven't worn for years. Visualize
yourself as active and walking 30 minutes a day. If
you plan to reduce debt, imagine yourself receiving
a credit card statement that shows a zero balance.
Experts also advise visualizing how you will deal
with obstacles to your goals, for example enjoying a
party without overeating.
Emotions are another important component of
the behavior change process. Visualize, and then
verbalize to others, how you think improved
health and increased wealth will make you feel.
Positive and long-term feelings can be powerful
motivators.
It will help to write specific goals on a paper
and then draw or attach a picture of it and post it
somewhere where you are reminded of it daily-
perhaps the refrigerator or dresser mirror. Once
you see it, you can name it describe it and take
small steps over time to achieve it.
Use powerful words to describe your goal, ex-
perts call this using the "language of change."
Phrases like "I will", or "I am going to.." will help
create a positive mindset.
Examples of this idea would be I will auto-
matically deposit $100 a month into a savings" or "I
will eat fruit for dessert at dinner."
If you are working to change habits, another
strategy is to speak of negative behaviors and re-
lapses in the past tense. When you use phrases like
"I was", "I no longer" and "I used to" help train
your unconscious mind to believe that change is oc-
curring and is possible.
When it comes to improving health and in-
creasing wealth, it is mind over matter. When peo-
ple expect a lot, they generally achieve a lot. The
same is true for underachievement, it you expect
little that will happen too. Using visualization to
create picture in your mind you will be more com-
mitted to a goal. For a free copy of a worksheet to

A Lovely
Work Of Art
Sunday was a red-letter day for the Town of
Lee, echoes of which could be heard as far as
Tallahassee.
Quite a large assemblage gathered for the
grand opening of the new library, "the lovely
work of art," which proudly welcomes all visi-
tors from its prominent location on US 90.
Though storm clouds threatened, conviviali-
ty reigned within as people entered the foyer
where many stopped to look for names listed on
the plaques of honor, then stopped to greet
friends in the lovely conference room while
choosing from the tempting display on a long
table of goodies provided by the Junior Auxil-
iary. Thank you so very much, ladies!
Many expressions of admiration were over-
heard as all moved into the main rooms of the li-
brary. Though we were told that more
furnishings would soon arrive, everything
looked perfect as it was. Even though we're sure
that Danny and his elves were practically ex-
hausted from moving an entire library, they
were still perfect hosts.
Roy Ellis and I were given the honor of cut-
ting the pretty white satin ribbon. Those were
the biggest scissors in which to place two sets of
hands that I ever saw.
Just in case I was asked to say a few words
(which, thankfully I wasn't), I had written the
following:
"This is indeed an honor for which I thank
Danny Hales, the county commissioners and
Mayor Kinsey. Isn't our library a lovely work of
art? And so many people can say, 'Well, I helped!'
From the smallest worker ant to the queen of
the colony, each can be proud of the finished
product for one cannot do it alone; it takes a
team pulling together in harness to deliver a
load safely. There can
be no discord.
'Though I planted a
seed and nourished the
resultant plant careful-
ly, many others are re-
sponsible for the
beautiful plant, which
now stands before you.
My last column con-
sisted of thanks to

was pianist at May Fetes on
the Court House Square in
Madison for many years. In
later years Mrs. Coody was a

The new Lee Library held its Grand Opening on
Jan. 24, as the community and a few local notables
joined the celebration. Regional Librarian Danny
Hales conducted the ceremony, praising the effort as
an example of the community commitment
throughout Madison County
The regional administrator introduced the vari-
ous parties who were responsible for bringing the
project in on time and under budget, although he
did note that more resources would be needed to re-
alize the library's full potential.
The Friends of the Lee Library, headed up by
Frank Mercer, raised over $40,000 for furnishings
and equipment. In the end, between contributions,
waived fees, donated land, and key collaborations,
the project came in almost $20,000 under budget.
The annual costs will naturally be higher in the new
5000-square-foot facility, however, but these increas-
es were anticipated.
The educational and community benefits of the
new library are numerous. Practical services con-
cerning employment and education, as well as local
health services, are central to the libraries mission.
There are also meeting facilities and activity rooms,
including the Thelma Thompson Conference Room.
Of course, the support and expansion of required
and leisure reading throughout the county remains
priority one.
Hales was very pleased to recognize Thelma
Thompson as the ribbon-cutter for the grand open-
ing. Thompson has been a community crusader for
the library for years, starting as a one-woman army,
and then ultimately organizing a facility that was
later picked up by the Suwannee Regional Library
system that Hales oversees. In recognition of her
years of devotion and sacrifice, the Conference
Room was named in her honor.
Libraries are an essential community resource.
From classic reading to modern Internet services,
the new Lee Library already stands as a monument
to community commitment, not to mention its ar-
chitectural excellence.
The new library is located next to Lee Elemen-
tary School. Determinations regarding hours of op-
eration and the official grand opening will be
forthcoming. In the meantime, the current library,
which is located on County Road 255 just south of
US 90, remains open. The phone number is (850) 971-

Our Youth Pastor Jerry Meeks and our ALIVE youth group are working on
skits for our annual Valentine's banquet. Jerry says he can always use more tal-
ent and invites any interested youth to join him.
Pastor Redditt is continuing his series on how God takes ordinary people
like you and I and accomplishes extraordinary things through them. In addi-
tion, we are continuing our series on Revelation on Sunday and Wednesday
nights.

On Saturday, Jan. 30, the Gibbs
Family will appear at the Fifth Satur-
day Farmers and Friends Festival.
Concert times are scheduled for 10:30
a.m. and 2 p.m.
The Fifth Saturday Farmers and
Friends Festival is held in downtown
Madison. Singing takes place in the
beautiful Four Freedoms Park.
The next morning, the Gibbs
Family will appear at Sirmans Bap-
tist Church during the 11 a.m. ser-
vice.
Sirmans Baptist Church is locat-
ed south of the Greenville Interstate
10 exit at 168 SW Sirmans Church
Way, just off 1st Federal Road.

Carson Stout., president and owner of four fur-
niture factories, with headquarters in High Point,
N.C., told members of the Madison County Industri-
al Development Corporation Tuesday that he had
chosen Madison for the site of his new factory.
A polio benefit party, sponsored by the Woman's
Club, was held Wednesday afternoon at the Club
House.
Mr. and Mrs. Leon Mason and daughter, Mar-
garet, of Tampa were weekend guests of Mrs. Ma-
son's mother, Mrs. R.L. Millinor.
Johnny Milton Blount, 22, of Greenville, a line-
man with the Southeastern Telephone Company
was electrocuted Friday while stringing a telephone
wire on a plantation north of Lake Jackson.

Largemouth bass are amazing fish

When a male largemouth bass prepares
a spawning bed and the female lays her
eggs, the pair typically produces 5,000
- 10,000 fertilized eggs, and it may hap-
pen multiple times during the breeding
season that starts in the springtime.
The male protects the eggs until they
hatch two to four days later, then the
young fish or fry live off yolk sac for a
couple of weeks, after which they start
feeding on microscopic animals. The
male continues protecting the fry until
they reach about an inch long, and they
start eating other fish including their
own brothers and sisters. They can eat
fish half as large as their own bodies, but
they also eat insects, frogs, crayfish and
shrimp among other things.
Over a spawning season, a big female
largemouth bass can produce 100,000
eggs, but only two of them have to sur-
vive long enough to become adults and
to breed to keep the population stable.
That takes two to four years in the wild.
Bass survive by taking advantage of
their keen senses of sight, smell, taste,
hearing and touch, plus a lateral line that
enables them to detect motion in the wa-
ter around them. That helps them catch
food, even when they can't see well.
They can see colors and contrasts.
They seem to like reds and whites in
shallow water, and anglers know to use
those colors on the lures used to catch
them.
About 822,000 anglers target large-
mouths and other black bass in Florida
every year. If you take the number of
bass fishermen and multiply it by the
number of days they spend fishing for
them, the total is 15 million fishing days.
That compares to 6 million fishing days
for red drum, the most popular saltwater
fish in Florida.

genes, which don't grow as fast. Nearly
all the top 25 bass reported anywhere
have some Florida bass genes.
The largest bass ever caught was a
22.25-pounder, certified in 1932. The
largest ever caught in Florida weighed
a little more than 20 pounds, but fish-
eries biologists believe there are larger
ones swimming in Florida's waters
right now.

When the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Com-
mission (FWC) dedicated the
new Florida Bass Conserva-
tion Center in February, the
FWC began harnessing cut-
ting-edge technology to sup-
port the freshwater fishing
industry. Gov. Charlie Crist,
in a letter to FWC Chairman
Rodney Barreto, said the cer-
emony ushered in a new era.
"This state-of-the-art facil-
ity, combined with new re-
search and production meth-
ods, will help ensure safe
and sustainable use of these
resources for generations to
come," Crist said.
Recreational fishing pours
$2 billion a year into the
state's economy and sup-
ports 23,500 jobs. The new
facility includes a I.,II,.1,. ,
lab and will use genetic tech-
nology to enable scientists to
preserve the unique Florida
largemouth bass that is na-
tive only to peninsular Flor-
ida and ensure only healthy
fish leave the lab for stocking
projects.
Plans call for a compre-
hensive library and Internet
data center and facilities to
host scientists from the high-
est levels of research.
A visitor center, with a
$6-million price tag, is part
of the vision. Most of the
funding for the visitor center
will come from private sec-
tor partners and matching
federal funds
Ed Moyer, then-director of
the FWC's Division of Fresh-
water Fisheries, initially pro-
posed construction of the new
conservation center about six
years ago when he and other
experts recognized the old
hatchery was too antiquated
and inefficient to match the
state's needs. He envisioned
a climate-controlled rearing
facility to give biologists an
opportunity to spawn bass
and other freshwater species
at the most favorable time
for stocking projects.
The new facility will en-
able scientists to produce
more fish than ever before
for stocking and to release
them when they can contrib-
ute most to healthy fisheries.
Combined with the FWC's
extensive efforts to enhance
aquatic habitats and to regu-
late the fisheries based on the
best scientific data available,
the possibilities can boggle
the mind.
"Think about it," Moyer
said. "We're already on top,
and we have no intention of
going anywhere but up."

The EM Director shall possess a minimum of four (4) years

plement a Local Mitigation Strategy for Madison County;
Develop and plan training exercises which utilize all emer-

implement response and recovery plans, and develop and im-
plement public notification programs. The Director will also
serve as a liaison to appropriate local, state, and federal disas-
ter-related agencies.
