Mixed emotions surround the predicament
involving the grand century oak tree located on the north-
west corner of Range Avenue and US 90 in downtown
Madison. The great tree's growth has recently gotten the .h
attention of the Florida Department of Transportation,
specifically regarding its roots. The huge tree's roots have
pushed up the handicap sidewalk access significantly over
the years, rendering it too steep to maneuver.
Handicap cut-ins at the corners of sidewalks are com-
monplace, and no one has suggested that appropriate ac-
cess should not be allowed. Many

Shortly after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, a
structure fire at 509 SW Horry Street was called in
to Madison Fire and Rescue.
According to MFR Fire Inspector Archie Strick-
land, no one was injured in the fire. The owner of
the home is Shannon Douglas, who was not home at

Humbled
By Love
How many of you remember those moments in your
life when you have been humbled? Right when you think
you're the smartest, prettiest or handsomest person on
Earth someone will blurt out "You have a banana nose"
or "I work in the guidance counselor's office; I know what
you made on your SAT back in 1982." It's humiliating and
it works to humble you.
Have you ever been humbled by love? You may have
decided that you don't need the rest of the world; they
don't care for you. Then someone does something nice
for you and you realize that there is someone who cares.
Although it's been a long time since I've been in any
one of the situations I mentioned above, I really felt a
load of love over Christmas and it truly humbled me.
People are so good to me, when I don't deserve it.
I won't mention names in this article but I do want
to thank quite a few people for things they did for me at
Christmas and all through the last year.
I want to thank the man who loaned me his gas card
when my brother was in the hospital and again when my
father was in the hospital.
I want to thank a friend who showed up at Christmas
and brought my family and I Christmas gifts, including
coats, gloves and money
I want to thank the person who gave my family a
new couch for Christmas.
I want to thank the lady who made supper for my
family one evening during the holidays.
I want to thank the person who gave me a microwave
oven for Christmas.
I want to thank the lady who left the DVD and the
backpack for me at work.
I want to thank everyone for the wonderful gifts they
gave my family and myself.
I want to thank the people who showed up during the
surgeries that my father and brother had this past year.
Most of all, I want to thank everyone for the won-
derful prayers that have gone up for my family and my-
self.
These things have all shown Christ's love to me more
and more. They have humbled me. I am humbled by the
love these people have shown.
Father, help me to be giving like so many of my
friends and family have been to me. In Jesus' name,
Amen.

(Why We Say The Things We Say)
Lo And Behold!
It's one of those phrases that makes you feel like
you're quoting scripture. And perhaps that's the
comfort when we utter it, as it sounds a little holier
than our everyday speech (even when referencing
the most worldly of things --like finding that Wii
game right there on the shelf just in time for Christ-
mas).
Such was my case last week while lamenting
mall traffic and my own poor timing. I was about to
give up when "lo and behold" there was a space,
right near the door!
As if Gabriel himself had come down to direct
traffic, I found myself saying (to no one there) "Well,
lo and behold, there's a spot right there!"
For the record, the words "lo" and "behold" do
appear in scripture, 16 times to be exact, but inter-
estingly enough, the two words are never once
shown together in the way that we reference them
today
From Genesis 15:3 to Matthew 28:7, the combi-
nation of "lo" and "behold" are used to exclaim
something extraordinary (like when Abraham
learns he will father a nation or when Jesus' disci-
ples discover he has risen). It's not that the words
aren't IN the text. It's just that they aren't spoken in
the order in which we say them today. (In scriptural
context, you'll find beholdss" always precede the
lo'ss" and most often with several words in be-
tween.)
By definition, "lo" (which came to us through
the Middle English) translates "Look!" (as in an ex-
pression of utter surprise.) Adding "behold" lends
more emphasis.
Why we turned them around, I cannot say, but it
is safe to say the phrase often credited to the Bible,
is in fact, quite secular. And while yes, it has a
scriptural flair, "lo and behold" is otherwise just a
polished up version of "Well would you take a look
at that?"

This Is Not
Florida Weather
Brr-brr-brr! When did Florida decide to vacation
in Alaska and take me along? I'm sure I protested
strongly for I've never cared for cold weather, now es-
pecially since osteoporosis has settled in my bones
permanently and cold makes them ache.
But as I sit near the glass door to the front deck,
the sun streaming through feels and looks like real
Florida sunshine, so perhaps the state is still in the
sunny south after all. But the weather reports 15 de-
grees and possible snow this weekend. The last time
snow fell on Florida soil was, I believe, in 1989 and
that was quite a surprise.
My new puppy Bandit loves it though. Yesterday,
Arlo r55 :aue ran wild most of the day, barking and growling. I
Providers envied her energy, but she put on quite a show. Also,
my birds returned and the ground was covered with
doves, a flock of blackbirds, robins, dozens of tiny
wrens and even my beautiful cardinals. One male al-
ways perches on the edge of the deck and looks in at
me as if to say, "I'm back. Where's the food?" I don't
Know why they all left for a while. The jaybirds, who
are always around, still haven't reappeared. And, for
some reason, I don't see as many squirrels.
Grandson Don, who spent a holiday week with
me, returned to Atlanta yesterday He was quite a
help, cooking and keeping the house clean. He
cooked a traditional New Year's dinner blackeyed
peas, hog jowl and rice after we sat on the deck the
night before and watched the fireworks in "down-
town Lee." Don says he really likes it here and enjoys
our conversations but, of course, as a chef, maitre'd
and caterer, Atlanta is where his work is. He is
daughter Joan's youngest son.
The holidays haven't been kind to some families
in the area, I'm sorry to say, and right now, I'm wait-
ing to hear the latest on Jimmy Askew of Lake City,
who is in Shands of Gainesville on life support. Jim-
my is like a son to me and always said I was the only
real mother he ever had. He and daughter Mona have
a son, Troy, who is in his early forties now. Troy, Vic-
ki, Mona and her husband, Charlie, are at the hospi-
tal now.
On that sad note, I would like to say that I hope
most of you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season and
can look forward to a year of prosperity and happi-
Sness. So long for now.

Two Arrested In
Domestic Dispute
Two men were arrested in a domestic dispute
that led to a physical confrontation.
According to a Madison Police Department re-
port, on January 1 at 1:47 a.m., Ptl. Ruth Parks was
dispatched to 473 S.W Jeanette Circle in reference to
a physical altercation.
On arrival, Parks spoke with the victim. The
victim advised Parks that her husband, Wallace
Montina, had dragged her out of the residence by
her shirt collar.
At this time, Josh Arnold came outside and con-
fronted Montina, causing a physical altercation be-
tween the two.
After conducting a preliminary investigation,
Ptl. Parks placed Wallace Montina and Josh Arnold
under arrest.
Montina was charged with domestic violence
battery and Battery Arnold was charged with ag-
gravated battery
Both Montina and Arnold were transported to
the Madison County Jail.

jects that directly benefit others, giving customers
the option to purchase cookies to donate to an iden-
tified organization."
The Gifts of Caring program especially assists
the Military Troops overseas.
This year's cookie line includes the all-time fa-
vorites: Thin Mints, Samoas, and Tagalongs; Do-Si-
Dos, Trefoils, and Lemon Chalet Cremes are also
available.
New to the cookie lineup this year is the "Thank
U Berry Munch" cookie. This new cookie has pre-

"It started from a wood burning stove," Strick-
land said. "Apparently, embers got inside the wall
from the flue and it caught fire. Our department
wants to express how important it is to get the stoves
checked out before using them."
No one was injured in the fire.
Strickland said that the family is being helped
out by the American Red Cross.

Zipperer
Frank A. "Butch" Zipper-
er, age 63, died Tuesday Decem-
ber 29, 2009, at North Florida
Regional Medical Center.
Butch was born in Madison,
FL. and his family moved to
Gainesville in 1947. He is a
graduate of Gainesville High
School and Santa Fe Commu-
nity College.
Butch worked for the
Crom Corporation for 30 years.
His interests were teaching
hunting safety courses, Nascar,
and Gator football. Butch
served in the U.S. Navy Subma-
rine Corps.
Butch was preceded in
death by his father, Pennywell
Zipperer, his brother,"Buddy"
Zipperer and three sisters,
Ginia Zipperer, Helen Zipperer,
and Snookie Zipperer He is
survived by his mother Rosa V
Green Zipperer of Gainesville,
FL., daughter, Lisa Lanelle
Paulson, son, Samual Alex Zip-
perer, six grandchildren, Bran-
don Tate, Virginia, twins
Aaron & Andrew Zipperer, and
Jolie & Lana Paulson.
Funeral Services were
held Saturday at 11 a.m.. with a
visitation from 10 -11 a.m. in
the Milam Funeral Home
Chapel. Burial was in Ever-
green Cemetery Gainesville,
FL.

Fred Noonan is a
good example of both be-
ing in the wrong place at
the wrong time, and of be-
ing only a footnote in his-
tory
Most people have
never heard of Fred Noo-
nan. He was born near
Chicago in 1893 to Joseph
and Catherine Noonan.
His father died when
Fred was just four, and at
age 17 he began working
on boats.
He worked on mer-
chant ships during the
Great War as it was
known before World War
II came along. He worked
on three separate boats
that were sunk from un-
derneath him by U-boats,
but it was not his career
as a merchant mariner
that was Fred Noonan's
claim to fame.
It was in aviation
where Fred Noonan
made his mark. In 1930,
he earned his pilot's li-
cense, and over the next
seven years, he earned a
reputation as an expert
navigator as he mapped
flights for Pan Am Air-
lines throughout the Pa-
cific Ocean. It is believed
to be somewhere in the
Pacific Ocean where he
lost his life in an
around-the-world flight
attempt, although there
were only two people
who know for sure what
happened on that flight,
including Fred.
One of his colleagues
flew solo across the At-
lantic Ocean in 1932, and
then wrote a best-selling
book about the experi-
ence. That same col-
league chose
Fred to be
the naviga-
tor on an
around-the-
world flight
in 1937. Fred
was the pi-
lot's second
choice; the
first choice
was Captain
Harry Man-
ning.
Fred's
marine ex-
perience,
combined
with his ex-
perience in flying over
the Pacific, made him the
ideal choice as navigator.
He and his pilot first at-
tempted their worldwide
trip on St. Patrick's Day

ended in failure when
they had a problem with
one of the tires. The flight
also included Harry Man-
ning and a stunt pilot
named Paul Mantz
Neither Manning nor
Mantz were
on the second
attempt, and
this time
Noonan and
his pilot flew
eastward.
They flew
over South
America and
Africa, then
India and
southeast
Asia. They
made it as far
as New
Guinea and
attempted to
land at How-
land Island. The had al-
ready covered 22,000
miles, and had just 7,000
more miles to go to be-
come the first people to
circumnavigate the globe
in an airplane.
On their way to How-
land Island, something
went wrong, and their
plane went down some-
where in the Pacific
Ocean. There are several
conspiracy theories sur-
rounding the death of
Fred and his pilot, al-
though the real reason
why their plane went
down will probably never
be known.
Were they captured
by the Japanese? Did
their plane run out of fuel
somewhere over the Pa-
cific? Did it crash on an is-
land?
There is only one per-
son besides Fred Noonan
who knew what happened
to cause his plane to go
down on that fateful day
on July 2, 1937, and that
would be his pilot. And
just who was his pilot?
Amelia Earhart. Be-
cause she was flying the
plane that Fred was navi-
gating.

Cook-off Coming
To Fifth Saturday
Madison County Chamber Chili Challenge
expected to bring sizzling surprises

The Fifth Saturday festivals launched last year by Madison Rotary Club
continues to add and attract great new activities. The next event is scheduled
for Jan. 30, where the Inaugural Madison County Chamber Chili Challenge will
be featured, among other vendors and entertainment.
Chili chefs from throughout the region are expected to attend, firing up old
and new recipes that are sure to bring smiles and perhaps a little sweat to
visitors and judges. Of course, there are no admission charges for visitors and
$5 will buy them an all-you-can-eat chili ticket.
The entry fee for the cook-off is only $20. Contestants will set up their own
booths, although the chili may be prepared onsite or prior to the competition.
Among popular prizes, which include cash awards, the winners will qualify for
the Tri County Chili Cook-off that will be held in Taylor County later in the
year. There is even a prize for the best booth and winners will be announced in
time for lunch.
Entry forms and details regarding booths, rules and regulations, may be ob-
tained from the Greater Madison County Chamber of Commerce, which is lo-
cated at 248 SW Range Avenue in downtown Madison. The phone number is

The Chamber, along with numerous local businesses, agencies and vendors
are committed to making the Fifth Saturday programs entertaining, as they are
always looking for new crowd pleasers. The Chili Cook-off should be a sizzling
addition to that commitment.

Sunday morning
service was a blessing to
the Lord in multiple
ways. We began service
with David Fries singing
a beautiful message
through song; the piece
was called "Glory, Glory,
Hallelujah". This was
followed by Pastor Fer-
rell saying the offertory
prayer. The Worship
choir then sang a piece
called "Jerusalem the
Holy City."
Pastor Ferrell's
message came from
Matthew 28:18, John 16,
and Acts 1:8. He spoke
on The Holy Spirit at
work in a lost person
and also the Holy Spirit
at work in the yielded
Christian's witness. In a
lost person, the Holy
Spirit reveals the truth
of God's power and ex-
istence, the Holy Spirit
convicts of sin and en-
ables the lost person to
see the Savior and it
also brings the lost per-
son from death to life.

January 10-16, Madison
County will be hosting
the "Madison County
Prays" prayer rally. This
is going to be a time of
prayer throughout the
county Christians are
asked to pray for our
churches, community,

In Sunday schools all
across the world, the story
of "Jacob's Ladder" is
recited to children of
all ages from Gene-
sis 28:10-22. In the
story, the patri-
arch Jacob lies
down at a place
called Luz and
dreams of a
ladder that
was set up on
the earth. Its
top reached
to heaven
and the an-
gels of God
were ascend-
ing and de- '
scending on -
it. The Lord ,
stood above
the ladder and
said, "I am the
Lord God of
Abraham your
father and the
God of Isaac; the
land on which you
lie I will give you
and your descen-
dants. Also your de-
scendants shall be as the
dust of the earth; you shall
spread abroad to the west and the
east, to the north and the south; and
in you and in your seed all the fami-
lies of the earth shall be blessed. Be-
hold, I am with you and will keep
you wherever you go, and will bring
you back to this land; for I will not
leave you until I have done what I
have spoken to you."
The story goes on to say in verse
16 that Jacob awoke from his sleep
and said, "Surely the LORD is in the
place, and I did not know it." And he
was afraid and said, "How awesome
is this place! This is none other than
the house of God, and this is the gate
of heaven!"
Jesus referenced this story when
he encountered the disciple
Nathanael in John 1:51: "And He said
to him,' Most assuredly, I say to you,
hereafter, you shall "see" heaven open
and the angels of God ascending and
descending upon the Son of Man."
These two accounts in Scripture
are a call for the people of God who
comprise the Church to rise up and
"see" that our Lord is calling our
name in this hour and that He
wants to bless His people with in-
sight into His will and purpose for
the Church and for this county,
state and nation.

GED Classes Celebrate Progress
Daytime and evening classes now available!

The Madison Coun-
ty School District is
now sponsoring the
GED program for the
county. Strategic collab-
orations with Work-
force and North Florida
Community College
have created a great op-
portunity to back into
education and more
importantly a career.
Davtime and
evening classes are
available in Madison,
with a customized cur-
riculum to fit all cir-
cumstances. Simply
put, potential students
need only show up and
commit. Instructors
understand that some
are just looking for a
quick refresher, while
others need to start
from the basics. The
bottom line is the pro-
gram is structured to
allow everyone to suc-
cessfully complete the
course and either gets
into college or a voca-
tion they choose.
Currently, there are
several students en-
rolled with corrections
and law enforcement
employment as a goal,
and others for nursing.
Many look forward to
attending NFCC and
having option to go into
a variety of careers. Be-
cause let's face it, of all
the consequences of
dropping out, having
few or no choices and
being stuck in a life of
poverty is tops among
them.
On Dec. 16 and 17,
the daytime and
evening classes held
their respective holiday
parties, where students
and staff celebrated the
achievements of the
class. Students were
presented certificates
recognizing these
achievements, and even
though Santa wasn't
available to join the cel-
ebration, the next best
jolly and lovely elf was
in attendance District
Schools Superintendent
Lou Miller.
Miller also joined
instructors in remind-
ing each student that
his or her commitment
was notable and de-
serving of the greatest
praise. For information

Panthers Lose A Close One To Maclay

Basketball Coach
The first game after the holiday break Madi-
son Academy lost a hard fought game to the
Maclay Marauders.
The score was tied 11-11 at the half and the
Panthers held Maclay to no points in the second
period by playing good fundamental defense.
As the Panthers took the court in the second
half, the Marauders chipped away at the score.
With the leading scorer for the Panthers,
Zack Money, in foul trouble, Tyler Zimmerly
stepped up and played big for the Panthers.
The final score was 30-23 in Maclay's favor.

Big Win at Steinhatchee

Panthers Boys Basketball Coach
On December 17, 2009, Madison
Academy traveled to Steinhatchee to
take on the Stingrays.
The Panthers had come ready to
play and won the game 41-10.
At halftime, the score was 19-2 but
the Panthers wouldn't let up in the sec-
ond half of play
The Academy came out and scored
17 points in the third period, which is
the most they have scored all year in
one period of play
The leading scorer was Zack
Money, with a season high of 37
points.
Austin Bass and Tyler Zimmerly
both had two points to assist in the

Colin P Kelly, Jr. was recognized as the first hero
of World War II. A West Point Graduate, on December
10, 1941, Kelly's plane lifted off from Clark Field in
the Philippines. During its bombing run, Kelly's
bomber hit the Japanese cruiser Natori On its return
flight the bomber came under attack by Zeros from
the Tainan Air Group. Kelly stayed at the controls of
the badly damaged aircraft so that the surviving
crewmembers could bail out. Just as he and his co-
pilot attempted to escape the plane exploded, eject-
ing both men. Kelly's co-pilot, Lt. Donald Robins was
able to open his parachute in time. Kelly hit the
ground, parachute unopened. Some of Kelly's family
members, including his sister, Emy Howerton, re-
main in Madison County today.

Lt. Dale Leslie was a Navy pilot who helped res-
cue a group of Gen. Chesty Puller's men at Guadal-
canal. He passed over and saw the men had formed
the word "HELP" with their undershirts. He radioed
to another pilot and both men strafe the area, clear-
ing it of Japanese soldiers. Later, Leslie spent a
month stranded on the island after his Dauntless
dive bomber was shot down.

(NAPSI)-The way you maintain your car should take into
account the conditions in which you drive. That's the word from
AAA, which says too many drivers underestimate the severity
of their driving habits. As a result, they follow the wrong
maintenance schedule.
When polled recently by AAA, only 6 percent of motorists felt
they did most of their driving under severe driving conditions.
But when asked about the actual driving behaviors that create
severe operating conditions, 62 percent of motorists admitted
they drive their vehicle that way all or most of the time.
Some of the conditions and behaviors that are considered
severe include:
* Driving on short trips of less than five miles in normal temperatures or
less than 10 miles in freezing temperatures.
* Driving in hot-weather stop-and-go traffic.
* Driving at low speeds of less than 50 miles per hour for long distances.
* Driving on roads that are dusty or muddy or have salt, sand or gravel
spread on the surface.

Florida's FWC Is Looking To The Future

The new year is a good time to start anew. This
is certainly true for the Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission (FWC) as it begins an era
of new leadership in 2010. Ken Haddad, FWC's exec-
utive director since 2002, retired in December after a
proud career with the agency
When he became executive director, the agency
was in a state of flux as a result of a constitutional
amendment, combining the old Game and Fresh Wa-
ter Fish Commission, the Marine Fisheries Com-
mission and parts of the Department of
Environmental Protection into the new FWC. He
said he wanted "to see FWC no less than the premier
fish and wildlife agency in the country a progres-
sive and cutting-edge resource management, sci-
ence and enforcement agency"
"I want the FWC to be visionary ... and to be
proactive rather than reactive to resource issues. I
want to see a focused, well-managed, and well-fund-
ed agency that is a model of efficiency and business
for other agencies in the state and nation," Haddad
said.
His diligence and vision helped guide the FWC
as it surged forward under Haddad's leadership.
Now it is widely recognized as one of the most pro-
gressive agencies in the country Customer service,
continual improvement and staff empowerment
were hallmarks of his tenure. He also emphasized
stakeholder input and involvement, and helped
launch Get Outdoors Florida!
(www. GetOutdoorsFlorida.org). Similarly, he was in-
strumental in bringing about a summit titled "Flori-
da's Wildlife: On the front line of climate change,"
which put the FWC in the forefront among conser-
vation agencies by developing a comprehensive plan
of action for Florida to address climate change is-
sues as they relate to the state's fish and wildlife.
As he moves on, he has left the agency in great
hands. Nick Wiley, the former assistant executive di-
rector, was appointed by the FWC commissioners as
the third executive director of the agency, pending
Florida Senate confirmation.
Wiley is passionately dedicated to the conserva-
tion of fish and wildlife resources and an energetic
advocate for getting youth outdoors and preserving
our American heritage as anglers and hunters who
live with and understand nature. As a researcher
and field biologist, his work was primarily with ter-
restrial wildlife, but his personal interests include
angling. The fishing community will be well-served
by his enthusiastic leadership.
The new executive director also clearly under-
stands the importance of the human-dimensions as-
pects of wildlife management. He has promoted
hunting summits to bring in various stakeholders to
discuss the future of hunting and incorporated sol-
id research and marketing approaches to meet
hunters' needs. These same issues have been of con-
cern in the fishing arena.
In keeping with the theme of stakeholder input,
similar efforts have been ongoing and involve indi-
vidual freshwater anglers and diverse Florida busi-
nesses that derive their livelihood from ensuring
that top-quality, safe and sustainable fishing oppor-
tunities are available throughout Florida. A series
of regional summits led to development of an initial
planning document in 2008 titled "The Future of
Freshwater Fishing A Vision for Florida's Fresh-
water Resources." From there, an independent
Florida Freshwater Fishing Coalition spun off,
which is becoming a more vocal advocate for the
conservation needs of our freshwater resources.
So, as we change those calendars and start the
new year, the Division of Freshwater Fisheries
Management feels the FWC is well-positioned to
continue to ensure that Florida is the Fishing Cap-
ital of the World. We thank Ken Haddad for his
past leadership and look forward to embracing the
enthusiasm Nick Wiley has for our fish and
wildlife, engaging youth in active nature-based
recreation and ensuring that your voice as an an-
gler is heard.
With that in mind, don't forget we are looking
for your ideas pertaining to a Long-Term Manage-

Northern Cardinal's Color Brightens Winter
Happy New Year!
Most gardens and
woods look faded and
empty in winter. We
don't see as many ani-
mals as we do in sum-
mertime. The cold air
makes animals seek
warmth under leaves,
logs or low-lying branch-
es. However, one animal
keeps busy and bright-
ens nature during win-
ter. The Northern
cardinal is hard to miss
flittering and flying
around. He is bright red,
so he stands out when
perched on bare tree
branches.
Cardinals do not mi-
grate like other birds.
They don't seem to mind
the cold, so they stay
put. That may be one
reason the cardinal is
considered a Christmas
bird. Images of the bird
can be seen on orna-
ments, cards and many
other winter decora-
tions.
The male cardinal is
bright ruby red. Its face
and throat are black, and
he has a bright orange
beak. The female cardi-
nal is very different in
color. She is mostly
brown, but the same
ruby red colors of the
male dust her wings and
tail. Her beak is not as
bright as the male's and
looks almost pink. Both
have a telltale crest or
pointed tuft of head
feathers.
Northern cardinals
are one of many birds
that have learned to live
in cities. They especial-
ly like parks and garden
areas. They also live in
the country, in wooded
areas or areas with lots

Ask your mom or
dad if you can go outside
and lay down in the
grass so you can look up
into the trees. Don't be
disappointed if you
don't see one right away.
You may need to ask
your mom or dad to put
out some sunflower
seeds. They love them!

watching birds, ask if
you can borrow some
binoculars. Binoculars
are a neat way to see
birds up close. Start
keeping a journal of the
birds you see. If you
write down their colors
and other things about
them, you will be able
to look them up. You
