lafayette FFA shows swine at State Fair
Submitted
The Lafayette FFA Chapter
participated in the 2009 Florida
State Fair Swine Show last
month in Tampa. Trevor Swaf-
lord (Chapter Pig), Cecelia Koon,
Jackson Koon, and Garrett Hart
exhibited swine. The Florida
Ptate Fair livestock program is
considered unique and progres-
'ive compared to other programs
.across the nation.
All livestock exhibitors that ex-
hibit livestock compete for "pre-
mium" points, which, in turn,
equals money earned. The four
chapter participants attended an
education seminar in September,
attended the tag-in in November,
attended an ethics seminar and
became certified in livestock
ethics, completed the Pork Quali- -
ty Assurance Program, gave a 2-
minute education speech', before
the public at the fair, completed
an educational poster, completed
a written exam, competed in
showmanship, "and of course ex-
hibited their pigs in the show.
All of these events count for a
certain number of points, and
money earned will be based on
their performance in each area.
The chapter would like to thank
Lyons' Show Pigs for donating
the chapter its barrow for the
show.
Jackson Koon, son of Sydney and Julie Koon and Terry and Dana Fillyaw, speaking to the judge about
his barrow. Jackson received a blue ribbon in showmanship and placed 1st in his class and was Divi-
sion Reserve Champion.

., ,,, ....-
There is a story of a'
couple that approached
their 50th wedding an-
niversary. To celebrate,
the wife prepared her
husband's favorite meal
and wore her new dress
to look-just right. With
all the preparations in
place, over dinner she
asked her husband for a
special gift in return:
"Honey, since it is our
anniversary, I would
like to hear you say that
you love me." To which
her husband replied, "I
told you fifty years ago
that I loved you, if I
change my mind, I'll let
you know."
Do you ever feel taken.
for granted? Unappreci-
ated? On the flip side,
are you intentional
about letting others
know that you appreci-
ate them? Why are we
so quick to praise sports
heroes or celebrities for
their accomplishments,
while assuming that
those most important to
us know that we are .
grateful for all they add
to our lives?
The dictionary defines
"assumption" as a fact
or statement taken for
granted; an assuming
that something is true.'
In our relationships, as-
suming that others
know they are loved
ahd appreciated can do
some real damage:
The Bible is clear re-
garding this matter of
taking others for grant-
ed. In Romans 12:10,
the apostle Paul writes,
"Honor one another
above yourselves."
The word "honor," in-
dicates one whose worth
brings respect or fame; a
person of superior
standing. Who takes the
time to honor a mother
or wife for the daily re-
sponsibilities she fulfills
. day after day? How
about that husband who
shows up each day for a
job he doesn't really en-
jdy or spends time with
the kids, or the child
who studies hard to'
make a good grade o0

outlined below describe
improvements in more
detail.
Property crimes:
Property crimes on
campus decreased 37
percent in 2006-07 .and 22
percent in 2007-2008
from the Fall 2004 base-

on campus have de-
creased 59 percent com-
pared to Fall 2004. This
represents a 59 percent
decrease from the Fall
2004 baseline of 27, ex-
ceeding the target of a 10
percent decrease.
Violence: The number
of students involved in
incidents of fighting and
harassment on campus
increased 2 percent in
200.6-07 and decreased 42
percent in 2007-08 from
the 2005-06 baseline of 43
students. The number of'
students involved repre-,

crease over the 2005-06
baseline of 43 students,.
To date in Year '3, the
number of students in-

NFCC promotes programs to local Hispanic families
MADISON, FL North Florida Community College Math Instructor and Advisor Efrain Bonilla recently visited Lafayette High School, in Mayo, to promote NFCC's many successful pro-.
.grams. While there he had the chance to meet with several local Hispanic families to discuss with parents, in Spanish, how NFCC could enhance future possibilities for their children.,
Pocket Gophers
Chris Vann
One of the speakers, a
life-long farmer from'
the panhandle, at a re-
cent Lafayette county
peanut meeting asked
*what caused the sandy
mounds he was seeing
in the Suwannee Valley
area. I told him the
mounds were formed by
pocket gophers or sala-
manders. I also as-
sumed-that they were
common in the panhan-
dle; but, evidently not.
The only reason I can
think of is maybe they
prefer the lighter sands
here as compared to the
heavier soils located
there.
I have had several
people comment on the
amount of pocket go-
pher activity this year.
And I have no good an-
swer to the increase oth-
er than I am sure it is
environmentally related.
In other words, maybe it
is just a good season for
them.
The southeastern
pocket gopher is also
known as the sandy-
mounder or salamander.
It is a rodent that is well
adapted to life under-
ground. It has very
small eyes and ears and
large claws on powerful
front legs. The term
"pocket" refers to the
fur-lined cheek pouches
that the gopher uses to
carry food. The pocket
gopher is tan to gray-
brown in cblor. The
feet and' naked tail are
light colored. The aver-
age total length of an
adult gopher is 9-12
inches. It is most abun-
dant in longleaf
pine / turkey oak sand-
hills and upland ham-
mock habitats. Mounds
are very noticable in
burned bahia or coastal
fields in the spring.
The pocket gopher feeds
on roots, rhizomes, bulb
and tubers of a variety
of plants. Bahia grass
tubers appear to be a
preferred food as well as
sweet potatoes, peanuts,
sugarcane and peas. In
fact, pocket gophers
hold our peanut re-
search plots at the Ex-
periment Station in
Suwannee County in
high regard.
Trapping is the most
effective method of con-
trol once a pocket go-
pher invades a sensitive
area; although it can be
very time consuming
and have mixed results,
Chemical repellents, vi-
brating devices and
home remedies like
chewing gum have
proven largely ineffec-
tive.
If you have problems
with pocket gophers, we,
can provide details on
trap-setting. For more -
information, contact
Chris Vann at the
UF/IFAS Lafayette
County Extension Of-
fice, 386-294-1279.

The School
I
0. A. Winburn, Jr.
ScrubHammock@aol.com
I lived within walking
distance of school and so
I only rode the school
bus on certain occasions.
My first experience rid-
ing on the bus came
about when hog killing
or cane grinding was go-
ing on at Scrub Ham-
mock and I was instruct-
ed.to get on the bus with
those whom I knew to
live there. My parents
both took part in the du-
ties associated with
those events, that often
carried on into the night
time.
Those first buses were
quite different from
those in use, today. The
bodies were made of'.
wood and the seats were
wooden benches that
ran the length of the. bus
on either side. They
were useful enough and
the slight inconvenience
of sitting on the wooden
seats was no concern,
About the only thing
carried over to the new
modern buses in use to-
day is the color, and
many, improvements
and safety features have
been made in the last 70
years or so in the way.
that school buses are
constructed and main-
tained. As I understand
it, no bus which has
passed it's 20th birthday
is allowed on the road. I
don't know when that
was put into effect but I
know of some interest-
ing events that occurred
during the 1940s when I
was a student at Mayo
school. That safety rule
may have been in effect
then but if it was, it was
probably suspended
during the war years so
that our industrial might
was directed at winning
the .war. This would
have -been the reason
that some .of the .buses at
LHS had been kept, in
service past their desig-
nated useful life..
The roads that those
buses normally traveled
daily were another story.
The only paved road in
the county at that time
was US 27 which ran
east and west through
Mayo. The state toads
connecting with Live
Oak and Madison had
been established, proba-
bly with an eye to
.paving at some later
date when funds were
available which meant
that they had been'
straightened and a. road
bed was built and main-
tained. Each county had
the responsibility of see-
ing that those roads
were maintained. Some-
times you could tell
when you crossed a
county line by the.sud-
den appearance of'
garbage or trash visible
along the road.
Especially during dry
times those sand roads
could .become quite a
problem. Sometimes the
driver would create an-
other road while trying
to avoid a sand bed or
tree limb.
All the paved roads
you see in Lafayette
County and many of
those found else where
about the state were all
constructed after the end
of WW II.
By the time I got in ju-
nior high school, I be-
came more aware that in
addition to'hauling stu-
dents to school and
back, the buses were
also used for special ac-
tivities such as class out-
ings and sports events,
basketball being that one
event. A mechanic often
drove those buses for
such events and it was
sound reasoning that if a
bus were to break down
that mechanic would
more likely possess the
necessary skills and
tools to see it through.
Howard Hamlin is the
bus mechanic that I have
the most vivid recollec-
tion 'of as driving those
buses. The, trips to bas-
ketball games were
mostly at night so if
there was a breakdown
the situation became
more onerous.
One night Howard
was hauling the teams to
do battle with Greenville
and somewhere between
Madison and Greenville
on US 90, the old bus
gave out. Mr. Hamlin
immediately made an ef-
fort to breathe more life
into that yellow behe-
moth but to no avail.
Not to be stymied to our
effort to appear for 'the
game as scheduled, we
passengers standing be-
side the road began
making signs to passing
Bus Saga
motorist that we would
appreciate a ride,
"thumbing a ride" as it
was called. Sure enough,
those good hearted folks
around there, many who
were also on the way to
the ballgame, managed
to transport the entire
load to the gym in
Greenville. Somehow or
another Mr. Hamlin was
there to take us back to
Mayo afterwards.
One trip that is etched
in my memory started
out as the annual trip of
our FFA boys to Ocala to
the livestock show and
judging where some
members of our club had
steers entered in the
competition. We assem-
bled at the school a little
before daybreak and af-
ter it was determined
that all who were going
were present, we em-
barked with Mr. Hamlin
again in the 'drivers seat.
It must have been'
about 8 o'clock that
morning as we were
passing through the lit-
tle hamlet of Hague in
'Alachua County when
that old bus had to be
steered.to the side of the
road as it gasped it's last.
Try as he would Mr.
Hamlin was not able to
revive it. We split up
into small groups and
started "thumbing"
rides again. I'm sure that
.this day and time such
practice would not even
be considered. That was
in a time before drugs,
poisoned candy and cra-'
zies molesting children
and 'a plethora of
lawyers looking for
somebody to sue.
Again we made it to
our destination on
schedule and again Mr.
Hamlin had a bus there
to make the return trip
when the day's activities
were over.
The school buses were
used to take our FFA
chapter to the state fair
in Tampa each year also.
Mr. Rumph, our advisor
was from somewhere
around -that part of the
state and he made,
arrangements for us to
stay overnight at McDill
Air Force Base where
there were empty bar-
racks.
At the fair grounds we
spent a good part of the
day at the agriculture ex-
hibits where we judged
such things as beef cattle
and forage crops. Once
that was done we had
some leisure time and
we took in what the fair
had to offer which was
quite a lot. Rides and,
side shows were every-
where and there was a
race track there where
the dare devil stunt dri-
vers of Joey Chitwoods'
team performed their
death defying feats.
Another seemingly
death defying act was
the flag pole perfor-
mance where an acrobat
would ascend to the top
of the flag pole that I
guess was .at least 100
feet from the ground
where he would cause
that pole to begin sway-
ing back and forth until
it was practically touch-
ing the ground as it went
to and fro. At some point
this dare devil would
place his foot ,in a sling
attached to the top of the
pole and allow his body
to swing as the pole did
it's oscillating moves.
Well, all that was seen
for the first time by
many of us and was in-'
delibly etched in our
memory, at least'in mine.
A humorous incident oc-
curred when a few of us
were directed to enter an
exhibit laid out like a
long tunnel where we
viewed many different
things of interest and
there was no fee. When
we neared the exit there
was a gentleman there
apparently collecting a
fee for taking that tour. I
would classify that as re-
sembling a sort of scam
in today's terminology.
One of the boys in our
little group suggested
that perhaps we hadn't
seen all that was offered
and we took the reverse
tour back to the en-
trance.
Mr. Rump had been
granted permission for
us to visit the citrus
grove of an acquaintance
of his and Mr. Hamlin
drove us there as we
started back home. We
left there with a lot of or-
anges and tangerines in
bags provided by Mr.
Rump. Sadly, some one
tossed the pulp from an
orange and it started a
very insidious reaction.
It was in fact so disturb-
ing that Mr. Hamlin
pulled the bus off the
road and Mr. Rumph
proceeded down the
aisle,towards the rear of
the bus, his ominous
glare fully engaged.
Everything got eerily
quite and without say-
ing a word, he returned
to. his seat and advised
the driver thusly, "Mr.
Hamlin, I think we can
proceed now." That inci-
dent caused a pall to
hang over our little
group for the remainder
of the trip back to. Mayo
but nothing further was
ever' heard. Everyone
aboard helped with
-putting that bus back in
order after we returned
and, we learned the true
meaning of patience and
forbearance as evi-

' fen it comes to the health of their children and even
arerits, many moms feel it's their responsibility to be as
educatedd as possible about health and medicine. With the
iany different medicines out there, it is hard to keep track
who in the family is taking what and the dangers of drug
actions, interactions and side effects.
'- ^
:fact, the. incidence of serious drug reactions is
h4reasing,, according to a recent analysis of adverse drug
yents reported to the Food and Drug Administration

Now there is a free online tool to help the "family health
Officer" stay informed about the family's medicines:
OedNotes (www.Drugs.com/mednotes). MedNotes is an
Oard-winning, easy-to-use, personalized medication
nagement program that can be used to track the whole
ily's medications. Developed by Drugs.com, the most

'omrns are gatekeepers of their family's health, from their
children to their elderly parents, so it's critical for them to

track your medication safety
medical information in a simple, easy to read personalized
format.
Gain immediate access to in-depth consumer information,
drug comparisons, historical news, FDA alerts, drug
interactions, plus food, allergy and medical. condition
interactions.
Choose to be notified when new FDA alerts are issued
and when any new drugs become available for any of your
existing medical conditions.
Print health and medication records, including physician
and emergency contacts, allergies and medical conditions.
Use MedNotes to manage medications profiles for
yourself and your family. I
MedNotes gives mothers the chance to create profiles for
different family members, enter the names of all
medications being-taken and register to receive -- all in one
easy-to-access place -- drug safety or interaction alerts,
new drug and specific condition news that is released by
the FDA or drug makers. Moms can also print portable
personal health and medication histories, including
physician and emergency contact information.
Feedback from early users recognizes MedNotes as a
valuable aid to their everyday health management, and in
some cases as a potentially life-saving information source.
One consumer shared his printed MedNotes medication
profile with paramedics in the ambulance and credits
MedNotes with saving critical time and, potentially, his life,
on the way to the hospital.

profiles or for more information, please visit:
