" .: The tax preparer for a Live Oak
building contractor convicted of
tax fraud has been fined $2,500
for her involvement in the case,
court records show. Barbara E.
Coulthurst, of Mayo, could have
faced up to six months in federal
prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
Coulthurst, 64, pleaded guilty
in December 2008 as an accessory
after the fact to the filing of false
federal tax returns. Coulthurst
admitted to knowingly submit-
ting the false returns of Live Oak
building contractor Barney Wain-
wright for 2000 and 2001.
She was sentenced March 5 in a

the cancellation of local chicken
growers' contracts.
Adalberto Brito took' the stand on
the second day of a hearing in feder-
al court in Fort Worth, Texas. North
Florida poultry producers are asking
a bankruptcy judge to reinstate their
contracts with the nation's largest
chicken company.
Brito testified through a translator
that a Pilgrim's field manager treat-
ed him poorly because he is of
Cuban descent. Further, Brito
claimed he lost his contract to pro-
duce eggs for Pilgrim's after his
name surfaced in media reports on a
meeting of North Florida chicken
growers in January. The meeting
was in part a strategy session to ad-
dress the cancellation of some poul-
try producers' contracts.
Brito testified that a Pilgrim's rep-
resentative had earlier told him egg
producers' contracts were not being
canceled. However, he was notified
soon after the meeting that his con-
tract had been cut. In addition, de-
spite his having spent upwards of
$10,000 preparing chicken houses for
a flock he had been promised, he
was denied a poultry production

Crash sends two to hospital
By Barbara Gill
A near head-on collision on US 27 last Sunday sent two
persons to the hospital.
Tim Cintron of Tampa was eastbound in a 1998 Nissan au-
tomobile shortly after 5 p.m. when for unknown reasons he
traveled into the westbound lane, said the Florida Highway
Patrol. That caused Alicen McLane of Tallahassee to swerve
left in an attempt to avoid a collision, according to FHP.
McLane's 2002 Volvo was struck on the front and right
side, causing the vehicle to overturn several times on the
south shoulder, accident reports indicate.
Lafayette EMS transported Cintron and McLane's passen-
ger, Mark Wallinga, to Shands of Live Oak.
Neither is currently listed as a patient there.
The crash occurred on March 8 about 10 miles west of the
Suwannee River.

An Evening With The Legendary
Dixie Echoes Quartet
"I promise to honor
and cherish you, in sick-
ness and in:health, for
richer or for poorer, in
the good times arid the
bad times, forsaking all
others, till death. do us
part." Sound familiar?
Of course. These words
(or something similar)
make up our marriage
vows, and on the day of
our wedding, we mean
every single word, the
question is, do We still
mean every word?
A vow is defined as a
solemn promise; one by
which a person is bound
to an act, service or con-
dition.: Beingbound or
tiede" to what we
promise' is one clue
these are not words to
say or take lightly.
In Ecclesiastes 5:4-5,
the Bible has much to
say about the serious-
ness of making a vow:
"When you make a
vow to God, do not de-
lay in fulfilling it. He
has no pleasure in 'fools;
fulfill, your vow. It is
better not to vow than to.
make a vow and not ful-
fill it." -
In our modern cul-
ture, it seems the words
of our wedding vows
have become part of the
"tradition" of getting
married. This ."tradi-
tion" makes it common
for couples to profess:
their lose "till death do,
us part," while holding
thewild card of divorce
as:a possibility if things
don't Work out. This is:
in direct opposition to'
our definition of a vow
making us "bound" to
what we promise. The
instruction to not make
a vow rather than make
one, and not keep it,
only applies to those
who haven't already
said "I do." (Ecclesiastes
5:4-5) Vows are volun-
tary, but once wve make
them, our remaining op-
tion is to get busy fulfill-
ing them.
One ,last thought
about fulfilling our
vows: it is tempting to
base our commitment
onhow well our spouse
is doing in this area, but
I have yet to witness a
ceremony that included.

The Dixie Echoes Quartet
An' unforgettable
evening of old-time
southern .gospel music
will be .presented featur-
ing The Dixie Echoes at
Bible Deliverance Church
in Madison on Thursday.
evening, March 26, 2009
at 7 p.m. A $7 donation is
requested at the door
plus a free-will offering
will be received during
the concert.
The Pixie Echoes pre-
sent the gospel in what
would seem to be a
unique style of gospel
music. In early days of'
gospel music (1930s to
the late 1960s), quartets
would gather around two.
microphones and would
sing four-part harmony,.
with just a, piano player.
Many would call this
style of gospel music the
"old-fashion way," many
would call it the "stan-
dard way," but it's today.
the "Dixie Echoes wa\" of
presenting the. gospel.
Making up the quartet
is owner and lead singer,
RaAdy Shelnut. Randy
has been with the group
since 1969 and is the son
of Dale Shelnut, one of
the Dixie Echoes' found-
ing members. Stepping
up as the baritone vocal-
ist, is Randy (Scoot) Shel-
nut, Jr. Randy also joins
the band playing bass
guitar on selected sohgs.
Stewart Varnadojoins the
quartet as their pianist
and adds the umque
sound that many have
come to love. Hitting the
low notes for the quartet
is Pat Barker, who comes
in as their bass vocalist.
The newest member of
the quartet is Wesley
Smith as .their tenor
singer.
Around the two micro-
phones, the Dixie Echoes
presents the gospel with
tight harmony and a two-
piece band that ministers
to all ages. They sing
songs that have minis-
tered down through the
years such as '"I Won't
Have To Worry," "Little Is
Much," "If We Never
Meet Again," "How Great
Thou Art" and many
more.

By David Palomino Ph.D.
A young girl asked me
recently if I had experi-
enced being bullied by
children while I was go-
ing to school. I thought
about this for a moment
because the core of the
discipline I learned at
home was respect for my-"
self, respect for others,
and respect for property.
I am sure that at some
point in my life someone
tried to bully me, but
somehow the situation
resolved harmlessly. I re-
alize, however, that this is
not the case in other in-
stances. I- thought she
was probably asking be-
cause' something was go-
ing on in her life, so I
asked this girl, "Is some-
one bullying you?" She
dropped her head,
shrugged her shoulders,
and replied, "Well...
some times, but I am
used to it. It doesn't af-
fect me any more."
The fact that bullying is
not affecting us directly
today as adults does not
mean that this is not a
real problem across the
country's school campus-
es. What seems to have
started as a simple push-
ing around or exchanges
of words has escalated to
harmful practices that are
proven to have lasting ef-
fects.
Statistics showthat al-
most 30% of youth in the
United States (or over 5.7
million) are estimated to
be involved in bullying as
either a bully, a target of
bullying, or both. In a re-
cent national survey of
students in grades 6-10,
.13% reported bullying
others, 11% reported be-
ing the target of billies,
and another 6% said that
'they bullied others and
.were bullied themselves.
Statistics like this invite
us to put the problem into
perspective if we are to
do something to reduce
such problems on our lo-

and called names. Girls,
on the other hand, report
being the target of ru-
mors and sexual com-
ments. Studies on bully-
ing show that female
youth most often bully
other girls using more
subtle and indirect forms
of aggression than boys.
For example, instead of
physically harming oth-
ers, they are more likely
to spread or encourage
others to reject or exclude
another girl.
It is believed that bul-
lies are often children
who act tough in order to
hide their feelings of in-
adequacy and insecurity.
Contrary to this belief, re-
search shows that bullies
tend to I be confident,
some of them with high
self-esteem, and general-
ly physically aggressive
with pro-violence atti-
tudes. These children are
known for being hot tem-
pered, easily angered,.im-
pulsive, and with low tol-
erance for frustration.
Bullies have a strong
need to be in control and
to dominate others; they
often have little or no em-
pathy for their victims.
Bullies have a tendency
to get in trouble very of-
ten, and they dislike and
do poorly in school; they
are likely to get into
fights, drink alcohol, and
smoke as opposed to chil-
dren who do not bully
others.
We may ask, "What
causes a child to want to
bully another child?"
There can be many rea-
sons. One reason is that
children and teenagers
may come from homes
where parents provide
little emotional support
for their children, fail to
monitor their activities,
or have little involvement
in their lives. These chil-
dren are at greater risk for
enfigaging in bullying be-
haviors. Another cause
can be the type of disci-
There is a very. strong
correlation between bul-
lying other students and
experiencing later legal
and criminal problems as
an adult. A study showed
that 60% of those children
identified as bullies in
grades 6th-9th had at
least one criminal convic-
tion by age 24. Chronic
bullies seem to maintain
their behaviors into
adulthood, negatively in-
fluencing their ability to
develop and maintain
positive relationships.
Programs providing
education aiming to raise
awareness about bully-
ing, increasing teacher,
and parent involvement
and supervision, estab-
lishing clear rules and
strong social norms
against bullying, and pro-
viding support and pro-
tection for all students
have been shown to im-
prove the quality of life of
children and teens on
school campuses. These
programs involve a team
approach between teach-
ers, principals, students,
and everyone associated
with the school, includ-
ing resource officers jani-
tors, and cafeteria work-
ers. Adults become aware
of the extent of bullying
at the school, and they in-
volve themselves in
changing the situation.
Students pledge not to
bully other students, to
help students -who are
bullied, and to make a
point to include students
who are left out.

WILDFIRE DANGER INCREASING
Bronson asks for public's
-help in fire prevention
Florida is experienc-
ing twice the wildfire
activity of a year ago
and the danger is in-
creasing every day,
Florida Agriculture
and Consumer Services
Commissioner Charles
"H.' Bronson said.
Bronson is urging
residents to do their
part to prevent wild-
fires by avoiding any
unnecessary outdoor
,burning. They should
"also check with their
lb'cal Division of
Forestry office or coun-
ty government to, de-
termine if there is a' lo-
cal burn ban in effect.,
"Prevention is the
key," Bronson said.
"We're asking residents
and visitors alike to ex-
Srcise extreme caution
; 'when,you use anything
. ft involves fire or
high heat. Before con-
ducting aniy outdoor
burning, check with of-
ficials to see if it is a'
dangerous burning day
and if there is a local'

Florida's vegetation
ripe for wildfires.
Wildfires can start eas-

cause of the current
conditions.
Statewide, the

Index (KBDI) currently
stands at 520, well
above normal for this
time of the year.
Moreover, the index
shows that nearly half
of Florida is well above

Since January 1,
Florida has had 1,024
wildfires that have'
burned 24,730 acres',
compared with 508
fires impacting 11,292
acres at the same time
last year. Because the

Additional tips for
residents to help pre-
vent wildfires include:
-- Never leave a
campfire unattended.
-- Don't throw ciga-
rettes or other lighted
material out of car
windows.
-- Clear gutters of
leaves and other de-
bris, and remove vege-
tation from around
homes, creating a 30-
foot defensible space.
-- Do not park motor
vehicles or equipment
in areas where the hot
catalytic converter
could ignite grass,
leaves or debris.

set up a portable printing press on
campus and gave a presentation on
the contemporary practice of print-
making. NFCC art instructor Lisa ,

artists Greg Nanney and Nick Alley
into her classroom for an educational
and cultural presentation and then
the two set up shop on the NFCC
campus giving students an opportu-
nity to see the printing process in ac-
tion.
"This was really "an amazing expe-
rience for our art students to see how
the process of printmaking, which
has been around for centuries, can' be
contemporary," said Barden. "Prior
to the Drive By Press presentation, I
.don't think many of the students re-
ally gave' much thought to how t-
shirts were made."
Drive By Press travels to universi-
ties, colleges and public schools
across the United States sharing their
knowledge, techniques, stories and
enthusiasm for printmaking and art.
During their travels, they collect
prints from local artists and have
amassed one of the largest collections
of contemporary prints from across
the country. Self-funded, Drive By
Press charged NFCC no fee for their
educational presentation, but raised
funds for their travels and education-
al endeavors by selling their custom
printed t-shirts on campus while
showcasing how their portable print-
ing press works.

'Parenting the Picky Eater
if kids had their druthers, most would love to eat candy for
breakfast, candy for lunch and pizza for dinner, with candy for
dessert. Fortunately, parents typically don't leave it up to the
kids to choose the menu.
But just because Mom and Dad choose the menu, that
doesn't mean son or daughter have to like it. In fact, as any
parent can attest, kids are often picky about what they eat,
and that can be problematic for parents. Getting kids to eat
healthily is not only beneficial for kids' growth and present
health, but good for their futures as well. Studies have shown
that kids who eat healthy foods as children are likely to carry
those positive eating habits with them into adulthood. While
turning a picky eater into less of a problem isn't always easy,
the following tips should ease the transition from a picky eater
into a more cooperative one.
Provide healthy snacks. Parents can often control what their
, kids eat at breakfast and dinner, and even lunch to a lesser
extent. However, it's when children snack that they develop
some of their worst eating habits. Rather than sugar-heavy
.snacks such as candy, cookies and spoda, keep healthy snacks
I around the house. Fruits and vegetables, low- or non-fat
yogurt and even some low-fat cheeses are far healthier
alternatives than traditional snacks that are heavy in sugar.
Instead of sodas, keep fresh fruit juices stocked in the
., refrigerator. Snacks-and juices should be easily accessible to
' kids,
Incorporate exercise into your family's routine. It's, no secret
adults and children alike should make time each day for
exercise. Parents concerned about their child's picky or
..4inhealthy eating habits might be able to combat those habits
by incorporating daily exercise into the family routine. For
-,,example, a nightly post-dinner walk around the neighborhood
Swil discourage anyone from overeating. And once kids grow
Accustomed to exercising each day, they're more likely to
; tralize they feel better when that exercise is coupled with a
healthy diet.
*Parents can set the best example. Kids, particularly younger
children, learn most of their behaviors from Mom and Dad.
When it comes to diet, parents must practice what they
preach.,Kids won't be inclined to drink a healthy fruit drink if
.they see:-Mom or Dad reach for a soda when they're thirsty.
Slo*6ever,:if Mom or Dad reaches for a healthy choice when
-they're, thirsty kids will likely follow suit. The same goes for
foodo.A child is not going to embrace eating vegetables if Mom
;r .adc never eat any veggies themselves. When it comes to

s;.$*; ~
When choosing healthy meals or snacks for kids, parents can forego traditional foods
that are heavy in sugar for healthier snacks and choices that are still delicious.
kids and healthy eating habits, the best example a kid can
have is seeing Mom or Dad making healthy choices.
* Don't be too strict. Kids aren't going to eat the best foods all
the time, and the occasional soda or candy bar isn't going to
be too harmful. Choose when and where to allow kids the
occasional treat they wouldn't otherwise get to eat. If you're too
strict, you run the risk of kids going overboard on unhealthy
foods and beverages once you're out of sight, be it at the -
school cafeteria or when the babysitter.comes over. :
