"FARM TO SCHOOL" PROGRAM
WILL HELP SCHOOLS BUY MORE
FRESH LOCAL PRODUCE,
BRONSON ANNOUNCES
Florida Agriculture
Commissioner Charles
H. Bronson unveiled a
new program to increase
the amount of,locally
grown produce available
to Florida schools. The
"Farm to School" pro-
gram is designed to help
Florida school district
food service officials lo-
cate local farmers who
want to sell fresh pro-
duce directly to schools.
"Every year, Florida
schools spend millions
of dollars for fresh pro-,
duce," Bronson said.
"The Florida 'Farm to
School' program is in-
tended to keep more of'
those dollars within the
state. It alsopromotes
.healthy eating habits
among students and as-
sists small local farm-,
ers."
A new web site -
http:/ /www.Florida-
Agriculture.com/ Farm-
ToSchool helps, inter-
ested Florida schools
and farmers find each
other so they can do
business. The web site
provides a list of schools
with contact information
and the items.they are
interested in purchasing,
along with a list of farm-
ers and the food-prod-
ucts they can provide;
"Incorporating locally
grown products into
school meals supports
local economies, reduces
transportation costs, and
helps to preserve farms
and farmland," Bronson
said. "We hope this pro-
gram helps facilitate
more commerce between
Our schools and farms."
School district food
service officials and
farmers can visit the web
site and submit their in-
formation to be posted
online.

Registry of Persons
with Special Needs
According to Chapter 252.355 Florida Statutes, "in order to meet
the special needs of persons who would, need assistance during
evacuations and sheltering because of physical, mental or sensory
disabilities, each local emergency management agency in the state
shall maintain a registry of persons with special needs 'located
within the jurisdiction of the local agency."
This registration helps the local Emergency Management Agency
to identify those persons in need of assistance and to plan for
resource allocation to meet those needs. This program gives
persons with special needs the option of preauthorizing emergency
response personnel to enter their homes during search and rescue
operations if necessary to assure their safety and welfare following
disasters.
If you or someone you know has a special condition affecting
eyesight, hearing, speech, walking, breathing or has an emotional
condition and would need assistance during evacuations and
sheltering, please contact your local emergency management
agency. The level of care given in special needs shelters goes
above the basic first aid care available to shelters open to the
general population.
All information given will be kept strictly confidential.

Spring Weather Forecast
Chris Vann,
Extension Agent II
La Nina conditions
have quickly returned to
the Pacific Ocean. As
late as December, condi-
tions were neutral and
were expected to remain
through this spring. La
Nina conditions usually
bring a warmer and dri-
er spring season to Flori-
da, central and lower Al-
abama and central and
southern Georgia. La
Nina event years can see
,rainfall of 30-50% less in
the winter and spring.
La Nina events in 1999,
2000 and early 2006 were
associated with an in-
crease in forest fires
across Florida and Geor-
gia. La Nina is also
known to be associated
with an active tropical
hurricanes season.
As with all weather
forecasts or climate pre-
dictions, there is much
uncertainty and variabil-
ity. But, looking at
trends over time indi-
cates that La Nina events
tend to be drier and,
warmer than normal; al-
though this year's win-
ter has seemed colder to
me than usual!
Locally, rainfall for the
last 12 months in the
Suwannee Valley area is
running about a two
inch deficit. But over the
last two years, the deficit
in the region is from 15-
20 inches. Tropical
Storm Fay in August and
more seasonable rains
helped to reduce a siz-
able rainfall deficit.

Bureau joins nine other Farm Bureaus in donating to Ronald McDonald
S'Submitted
Farm Bureau joined
with nine other County
Farm Bureaus in north
central Florida and cel-
ebrated Food Check Out Week by do-
nating, over $1,000 in fresh Florida-
produced meats, vegetables and.
fruitsto;.the Ronald McDonald House
* in Tallahassee. In addition to these
items, the group also donated over
$250 worth of gift certificates from
< Publix to purchase milk and other
dairy products during the coming
.year.
The Lafayette County Farm Bureau
has been involved with this project
for going on 10 years. During that
time frame, nearly $10,000 in food
has been donated to this worthy
charity, which.does great things for
families with children having med-
ical problems and their need to be lo-
cated near hospitals, such as in Talla-
hassee.
Rod and Brenda Land, along with
District Farm Bureau Women's Chair-
man, Kelly. Lyons, also assisted in
preparing a.noQo_ LegiSi.ti e lun-
cheon for nearly 60 guests at the facd-
ity this year. Representative Michelle
Rehwinkle-Vasalinda and Represen-
tative Leonard Bembry also attended
the Celebration of Food Check Out
Week.
. In case you are wondering exactly,
what is Food Check Out Week: very
simply put, it is the number of days it
takes the average American Family to
earn enough money to pay for the
entire YEAR'S grocery bill. .Accord-
ing to USDA statistics, it takes about
40 days for the average family to
work to pay this annual grocery bill.
Tax Freedom Day is celebrated dur-
ing May of each year. This is the day
when this same American Family has
to work until, in order to earn
enough money to pay for the family
taxes, at the local, state and national
levels. To put it plain and simple,
food is still a bargain in America.
"We have the safest, most abundant
and the most affordable food supply
of any nation on the earth." said Rod
Land, Lafayette County Farm Bureau
President.
"We are indeed proud to work with
Ronald McDonald House Charities in
Tallahassee," added Land. This orga-
nization is trulywhat the American
Spirit is all about helping people.
and we appreciate what they do.

Marie McMillan O'S-
teen, wife of Wyatte O'S-
teen, Sr. of Mayo, was in-
ducted into the Educators
Hall of Fame recently in
recognition of contribu-
tions to the school system
during her years of ser-
vice. It was noted that she
went beyond mere teach-
ing to. help students de-
velop the values and
qualities that would en-
able them to make a dif-
ference in their world.
This is evidenced by stu-
dents who went on to be-
come leaders as profes-
sionals and public ser-
vants in the community
at large.
Ms. O'Steen earned
her Bachelors .Degree in
English Education, a
Masters, and Education
Specialist Degree in Edu-
cational Leadership from
Florida State University
and Nova University,
graduating with honors.
She began her teaching
career in 1969 in Taylor

tired from the system as
an Assistant Principal at
Taylor County Middle
School in 1995. During
that time she taught Eng-
lish and foreign lan-
guages, elementary,
physical education, adult
education, and special-
ized in drop out preven-
tion. Her activities out-
side the classroom in-
cluded sponsorship of
many student organiza-
tions,- ranging from Stu-
dent Covernment to

time to serve as a literacy

tutor, and helped coach
many adults to earn their
high school diplomas.
She received a state
award for a business

Warden Martha Humphries,
I serve the Lafayette District Schools in the home-
less, migrant and English Language Learner pro-
grams. One of my responsibilities is to assist fami-
lies in accessing a variety of services designed to
enable students to be more successful in school.
The primary directive is that children in the pro-
grams will have the opportunity to meet the same
challenging state content and performance stan-
dards that all children are expected to meet; There
are currently 96 homeless, 25 migrant and 54 Eng-
lish Language Learners in the school district. Most
of these families exist at barely subsistence levels
without heat and in substandard conditions.
I want to thank you for facilitating the generous
donation of new or gently used coats and shoes
from your employees. Your leadership in this and
other altruistic projects have distinguished you as
an active participant in community affairs. I am
grateful for those who invest in the lives of the chil-
dren of our community. On their behalf, I thank
you.

State Representative
Debbie Boyd spoke on
the complexity of bills
that come before legisla-
tors and the difficulty of
answering the question,
"is it pork?"
State Representative
Leonard-Bembry told
the crowd, "We cannot
do without your input.
As we control more nat-
ural resources that an)'y

this presents many chal-
lenges. There are all
kinds of things in the.
budget." ,
Bembry touched on,
the state's purchase of
US Sugar.
"If you can't pay your
bills, then it is not the
time to buy land,"e 'e
said. He noted that 53.
percent of Florida is,
owned by federal, state
or local governments.
He also raised the ques-
tion of taxing bottled
water and the possibili-
ty of higher taxes on
cigarettes.
Harold Mikell of Con-
gressman Allen Boyd's
office said that at 83
years of age, with 14
years serving at the
state level and 16 at the
federal level, he is "in
Harold Mikell praised envi-
ronmental successes in

opposition to some
things." He stated that'
Swe are not in a depres-
sion because he rememr .
bers those times. He re-
peated Boyd's campaign
'objectives of a "bal-
anced budget and re-
ducing the debt." Boyd
is one of 42 "Blue Dog"
Democrats attempting
to control spending in
Washington.
Boyd voted no on the
auto bailout and yes on
:'the revised stimulus bill,
convinced that our fi-.
nancial system would
be "trashed" if not giv-
en help. Boyd also vot-
ed for PAGO, pay as
you go, for spending
bills..Mikell praised the
cooperative efforts of
producers, government
agencies and industry
for their successes over
the past five years on ,
environmental issues,
especially the local dairy
industry.
Adele Griffin of Sen.
Mel Martinez's office
highlighted agricultural
components of the stim-

help producers. Mar-
tinez voted.for the bank
bailout but has voted no
'on all other stimulus
bills.
Ben Parks, Florida
'Farm Bureau lobbyist,
urged small acreage
farmers to contact their
property appraisers if
they have been denied
green belt exemption.
According to Parks, no
matter your acreage,
you cannot be denied.
He agreed withlthe oth-
er speakers that the
stimulus bill is huge and
confusing and urged
everyone to stay in close
contact with their state
agencies and legislators.
Rod Land thanked our
state legislators and rep-
resentatives from our
senator and congress-

Take control of your health and enjoy a
full life
'It's not every day we wake up and say, "Hey, I really haven't been paying
attention to my bladder health, I wonder how it's doing?" It tends to be
human nature that generally what is out of sight is out of mind. As we age,
we may notice a new wrinkle when looking in the mirror, or realize when
stepping on the scale that we have gained a couple of pounds from a slower
metabolism. But we tend to forget about the less visible health effects of
aging until something doesn't feel quite right.
Aging brings with it a host of positive changes. We are wiser, more
experienced, and generally more financially secure in our places in life. But
there are some downsides of aging as well. Systems of the body may show
a little wear and tear after many years of reliable service. We slowly notice
an ache here, a pain there. Perhaps we're not as limber or fast as we once
were. Maybe things that worked well before aren't working just right
anymore. Wouldn't it be nice to drive ourselves to the mechanic and get a
"tune up"?
The Cost and Emotional Impact of Bladder Control Problems
One area that individuals seldom consider as they age until something goes
awry is bladder health. It can be one part of the body that shows some
deterioration over time -- although bladder conditions are not exclusive to
seniors. Certain symptoms may be indicative of bladder dysfunctions,
Including increased urgency to use the bathroom, urine leakage, and
multiple trips at night to the bathroom. Bladder problems can cause a person
to feel older beyond his or her real years, partly because of the assumed
lack of control a person has over the situation. But that doesn't have to be
o the case any longer. With bladder health, fast action can mean faster relief
and cost savings.
It is estimated that billions of dollars are spent each year in the United States
to dignose, treat and rehabilitate patients with urinary incontinence (UI) and
othqr effects of bladder conditions. Medicines are often a first line of defense,
but .any of the popular overactive bladder and UI drugs can cause side
effects from constipation and dry mouth, to more troublesome ones like
cognitive trouble and memory loss. Frequent trips to the doctor or pharmacy
arTrdthe purchase of hygiene pads can quickly add up to a Iot of money, not
to mention added stress. Bladder conditions that aren't remedied can lead to
a loss of sleep from frequent trips to the bathroom, irritability,
embarrassment, and a feeling of hopelessness.
New Natural Solutions for Bladder Control
At the-onset of any symptoms you should develop a plan to improve your
health and wellbeing. Don't feel you are alone about the situation. Millions of
people in this country suffer from incontinence or have experienced a
bladder condition at one point in their lives. Many women have already taken
action to use a natural remedy -- BetterWOMAN -- to improve bladder
control as well as aging related health and wellbeing.
BetterWOMAN is the first clinically tested all natural Chinese herbal
supplement proven to improve bladder control. Reduced urinary leakage and
urgency, as well as reduced urination, have been documented. The
supplement Is also appropriate for women of all ages, boosting overall health
as well as addressing urinary incontinence. In addition to Improved bladder
health, some women taking the supplements have reported increased
energy and vitality, as well as improved sexual desire.
"I used to spend $80 a month on incontinence medications plus pads. The
side effects of, the medications caused such a bad dry mouth that my dentist
told me my dental decay would become worse and worse due to dry mouth.
A secret of remaining active and young: take control of your bladder.
I found BetterWOMAN much less expensive and more effective for my
bladder control, with no side effects," says Debora, F in Florida.
BetterWOMAN is doctor and pharmacist recommended. It works well even for
women with multiple sclerosis (MS) for their bladder control. Best of all, it is
all natural with no side effects, and much less costly than medications.
Other Options for Better Bladder Control
While you're on the road to feeling better ... and younger, try these other
strategies for improved bladder health:
' Smoking has been linked to bladder cancer. If you're a smoker, pne of the
healthiest things you can do for yourself is begin a smoking cessation
program today.
" Kegel exercises work the muscles of your bladder. When urinating, stop and
start the flow of urine -- those are the muscles you want to focus upon. During
the day do several repetitions of Kegels to strengthen your pelvic floor.
' Use the bathroom regularly; do not hold in urine excessively. A full,
distended bladder for long periods of time could cause a stretching of the
bladder muscle, thus leading to a more floppy bladder, which cannot contract
as well as before being stretched.
* Eat healthy foods and drink plenty of water. The best way to look and feel
good is to nourish the body from the inside out.
Take Action Today
You may find It difficult to talk about bladder control. But the knowledgeable
consultants at BetterWOMAN are ready to listen and help you. Call 1-888-
686-2698 or visit www.BetterWOMANnow.com to learn more. BetterMAN is
also available for men with bladder control problems. Visit
www.BetterMANnow.com or call the number above. You have nothing to lose,
but freedom to gain.
Our staff is dedicated to providing you the ,
best eye care with the attention you deserve
