Adjacent

The Lafayette County
Volunteer Fire Depart-
ment, assisted by the
Mayo Volunteer Fire De-
partment, was dispatched
to a structure fire at 141
NE Violet Road at -8:50
p.m. on Jan. 23.
Upon arrival, the struc-
ture was fully engulfed in
flames, but the blaze was
brought under control
within the hour. The mo-
bile home was vacant and
no one was injured.
Both departments
working together were
able to save the adjacent
structure, which sus-
tained minimal damage.
No one was home at the
time of the fire and there
were no reports of in-
juries.
The scene has been
turned over to the State
Fire Marshall's Office for
investigation. The state
Fire Marshall's office stat-
ed in their report that the
cause of the fire could not
be determined, but that
there was no sign of crim-
inal mischief.

Children are a bless-
ing, and a challenge.
Ask any parent what
matters to their hearts,
and no matter what else
is going on in their lives,
their children will quick-
ly become the main fo-
cus. The lives of our
children are closely tied
to ours, for they are a
part of us. In fact, some-
one once described hav-
ing children as realizing
that your heart, formerly
safe and protected, is
now living on the out-
side of your body, ex-
posed and in harm's
way. I will soon cele-
brate 19 years of being a
mom I can relate!
The Bible says in
Psalm 127:3 that "Sons
(and daughters) are a
heritage from the Lord,
children a reward from
him." Who doesn't
agree with this verse
while holding a sweet
newborn in their arms?
But as they grow up and
begin to struggle against
their parents, it can be
difficult to see them as a
reward! Responding to a
child's disobedience is
frustrating and often
leaves us wanting an-
swers answers that the
Bible clearly gives. He-
brews 12:11 states: "No
discipline seems pleasant
at the time, but painful.
Later on, however, it
produces a harvest of
righteousness and peace
for those who have been
trained by it."
The most obvious
point in this verse is that '
discipline will not be
fun. Not for the giver or
the receiver but it is nec-
essary for training. This
training marks the differ-
ence between discipline


and punishment. Punish-
ment focuses on what
the child did wrong and
making them pay for
disobedience, while dis- I
cipline focuses on train-
ing and teaching the
child to choose what is
right next time. The har-
vest that discipline pro-
duces is desirable in the
life of every child: right-
eousness and peace.,
Righteousness is the abil-
ity to make wise choices
that while difficult, keep
us in right standing with
God and others. Teach-
ing a child to do what is
right at a young age
makes it easier for them
to choose right as they
grow into adulthood.
Even in the midst of dif-
ficult circumstances, they
will then experience the
peace that comes from a
clear conscious.
"Discipline your son,
for in that there is hope;
do not be a willing party
to his death" Proverbs
19:18; "Discipline your
son and he will give you
peace; he will bring de-
light to your soul."
Proverbs 29:17 As par-
ents we can grow weary
in trying to discipline
our children, especially
living in a culture that
condemns this practice.
It is easier at the time to
give in, but in failing to
correct a child, we allow
disobedience. We may
avoid a temporary battle,
but we lose the war in
building self-control and
responsibility within the
child. This allows them
to travel a path that
leads to destruction of
their relationships, repu-
tations, health and possi-
bly their lives. Our de-
sire to be friends with


our chil-
dren can
be real-
ized after -
they are
adults and

spect
gained though the hard
work of being their par-
ent when they are young.
Consistent, loving dis-
cipline ultimately teaches
our children how to dis-
cipline themselves and
guard their hearts from
the consequences of bad'
choices. After all, their
hearts are what matters

People spend their
money on a variety of
"stuff." Have you ever
noticed the amount of
space in the local grocery
store dedicated to selling
pet food? The reason for
this is those in marketing
know that people in this
country "spend big"
when it comes to their
pets! How many vari-
eties of cereal were avail-
able when you were a
child? Today there is .a
cereal for each child's
whim. Look at the toys
on the shelves at your fa-
vorite store.
Today you can see such
things as bubble gum fla-
vored toothpaste that
shoppers "can't live with-
out!" The old generic
toothpaste just will not
do even though it has the
same ingredients and is
less expensive. Every-
body thinks they must
have the best. Somehow,
the most expensive is
equated with the best.
Many families max out
credit cards during the
Christmas Holidays
thinking, "we have to
have the most and the
best." It is said that
sharks have feeding fren-
zies. It looks like humans
have spending frenzies!
It appears that it has been
going on for some time
and there seems to be no
end in sight. The mis-
management of funds has

caused the destruction of
many families. When the
money gets short tension
increases and tempers
flare, marriages break up
leaving the children as
broken pieces strewn all
about.
Then your pastor men-
tions giving; you say, "I
don't have enough mon-
ey left over after all the
bills are paid and get
angry at the preacher. II
Chronicles 24:10 says,
...and all the .people re-
joiced (...God loveth a'
cheerful giver I
Corinthians 9:7), and
brought in, and cast into
the chest. There is more
to life than getting. Some
in an attempt to get rich
have nothing while oth-
ers give and give and
give and have great rich-
es (Proverbs 13:7). Some-
one has said, "God shov-
els it in faster than you
can shovel it out; after all
God uses a bigger shov-
el!" You don't need to be
a doctor of theology to
understand that God
blesses cheerful giving
(Luke 6:38). When you
give God's way it has
benefits!
Going on to II Chroni-
cles 24:10 you can see
that ...all the people re-
joiced and gave and in
verse 11 the Bible says,
they set the house of God
in his state, and strength-
ened it. And it goes on to
say that they had more
then enough, so much so

moved to Branford, in
1974 from Lakeland. She
was a homemaker and a
member of Midway Bap-
tist Church.

by her husband: Walter C.

Ken and Ann Dayton of Belleair, Florida are

their daughter Huldah Caroline to Hamilton David
Mathis, III.
The bride-to-be is a University of Florida gradu-

A great big thank you!
Thanks to everyone in the community, the Manna
House Angel Tree was a success. We really appreciate
everyone working together to help the children in our
community have a better Christmas. A special thanks
goes to all the area churches who donate all year round
to the Manna House and to the churches who donated
especially for this cause.
Sherry Robinson was an "angel" who was especially
helpful to get everything together. We couldn't have
done this project without the employees at Mayo
Thriftway. They helped us collect the presents and Mr.
Chuck let us store them at the store until we could get
them. Thanks, again, Mr. Chuck for letting us have the
tree at the store.

Dear Editor
Thanks to the generosity of our neighbors in Live
Oak, many children around the world have something
to smile about. Operation Christmas Child, the world's
largest Christmas project, collected 15,998 gift-filled
shoe boxes from local residents during last year's col-
lection season. These gifts from right here in our com-
munity are now on their way to hurting children
around the world.
With the donations of shoe box gifts from churches,
individuals, businesses, and community groups, Oper-
ation Christmas Child will be able to hand-deliver over
7.6 million gifts to children in more than 100 countries.
Many of these distributions are taking place right now.
On behalf of our community, I would like to thank all
the local collection sites for providing locations for col-
lecting the gifts and all the volunteers who served with
this amazing project for children.
To everyone in the Live Oak area who packed a shoe
box gift, please be encouraged by the fact that these sim-
ple gifts will serve as powerful messages of joy and
hope to needy children around the world. Thank you
for joining our community in this amazing outreach,
and for giving to others at Christmas.
Though the Live Oak drop-off locations are closed
until November 2008, it is not too late to send gifts to
children overseas. Gifts are received year-round at
Samaritan's Purse, 801 Bamboo Road, Boone, N.C.,

Lafayette County
Toxic Roundup Feb. 16
Bring household hazardous wastes such as paint,
insecticides, used oil, solvents, fluorescent lamps,
used batteries, old fertilizer, cleaning chemicals and
stale gasoline to the 2008 Lafayette County Toxic
Roundup. The Toxic Roundup will be at the Mayo
Community Center on Saturday, February 16, from 9
a.m. 3 p.m. These items are some of the many
household hazardous wastes that the Toxic Roundup'
will safely dispose of for you. Proper disposal of
these products will help prevent contamination of
our water supply and keep our environment safe.
Simply bring your household hazardous wastes to
the collection center and the trained attendants will
unload and handle all your hazardous wastes; there
is no need to even get out of your car! The process is
quick. easy, and free of charge for Lafayette County
residents and fee based for businesses.
To transport these hazardous materials, carefully
pack the hazardous waste containers in boxes with
dividers. If a container leaks, pack it in a larger con-
tainer with an absorbent material such as cat litter or
oil absorbent. Do not mix different or unknown ma-
terials together. All containers must be labeled. If you
cannot identify the contents label it "unknown."
Do not bring explosives such as ammunition, dy-
namite and blasting agents; reactives such as crystal-
lized ethers, picric acd and sodium and phosphorus
metals; infectious wastes; or pressurized cylinders
such compressed gases.

U. S. 27 roadway improvements scheduled in Lafayette County


The resurfacing of an
8.8 mile section of U. S. 27
between Buckville and
Mayo in Lafayette County
is scheduled to begin Feb.
4, announced the Florida
Department of Trans-
portation (FDOT).
Motorists will en-
counter weekday lane clo-
sures between 8 a.m. and
8 p.m. The existing speed
limit will be maintained,
however speeding fines
will be doubled when
workers are present. On
street parking in Mayo


will be temporarily re-
moved while road and
driveway work is under-
way. Access will be main-
tained to all residence and
businesses throughout
construction.
The $3.9 million project
will include:
Removing and replac-
ing the existing pave-
ment.
Replacing and extend-
ing existing drainage
pipes to -meet current
standards.
Paving entrances to


side streets.
Expanding roadway
entrances to County
Roads 292, 320, 350 and
534.
Replacing some of the
driveways.
Repairing damaged
sidewalk and curb in
Mayo, as well as, adding
wheelchair accessible
ramps at the intersections.

Between 3,200 and 5,900
vehicles a day traveled
this portion of roadway in
2006. This segment of U.
S. 27 was last resurfaced

Boyd to speak at annual
Farm Bureau meeting
On Monday, February 11, 2008,

out to a quick lead
in a semi-final game
of the girls district
tournament at
Lafayette last week.
Led by Natalie
Land's 20 points,
Lafayette rolled to a
71-24 win to ad-
vance to the cham-
pionship game.
The Lady Hornets
never looked back
after establishing a
large first quarter
lead that saw
Lafayette lead 27-4
at the first stop.
Coach Jimmy
Blankenship said his
team came out fo-
cused on the task
before them and re-
sponded early. "We
tried to force the
game upon them,"
said the Lady Hor-
net mentor. "They
never could handle
the pressure and we
just did what we
needed to do." -
It was a 42-11
game at the half
with only the final
score to be settled.
Land led the Lady
Hornets in the
opening period with
13 of her game high
20 points in the first
period. Coach
Blankenship went to
the bench early in
the second half with
the clock running.

The Trenton Lady Tigers came into the champi-
onship game of the girls district tournament in hopes
of pulling off an even bigger upset than they had in a
semi-final game against heavily favored Oak Hall.
However, this time they were facing the district's
number one team and third ranked in the state rank-
ings the Lafayette Lady Hornets. Behind the play of
senior Natalie Land and Sharonda Cherry, the Hor-
nets picked up the 64-30 win.
The Hornets came into the contest sporting a 23-2

It was no place for the faint
hearted when the Lafayette
Lady Hornets entertained
Buchholz in their final regular
season game last week. Just
before the start of the district
tournament, Lafayette had to
go to overtime before pulling
out a thrilling 70-67 win.
Coach Jimmy Blankenship la-
beled it well when he said it
was "big win" for his ball-
club. "It was a big win for us,"
he said, "although we had
control of the game most of
the time." The Lady Hornets
finished their regular season
22-2 heading into tournament
play.

the fourth quarter. Sopho-
more Sunshine Reid tied the
game with a basket to send it
into the extra period. In the
overtime, Natalie Land, who
finished with 20 points, hit
five of six free throws in giv-
ing the Lady Hornets the win.
Lafayette jumped out early
in the game building a 17-5
first quarter margin. Not able
to stand prosperity, the Lady
Hornets allowed Buchholz
back in the game, cutting the
margin to two, 17-15 at the
first stop. "We went a little
cold from the floor," said
Coach Blankenship, "and that
allowed them to get back in
the game. Buchholz played


mark but that did not intimidate Trenton in the early
going. However, when the final horn had sounded, it
was Lafayette coming away with a fifth consecutive
district tournament championship and their seventh
in the past eight tries.
Lafayette, who had blown out Branford in their
semi-final game the night before, found Trenton a
gamed team at the onset. The Lady Hornets, accus-
tomed to routing a district early, found Trenton a lit-
tle more formidable foe. A 12-3 run late in the period
netted the host team a 18-11 lead.
Trenton had taken an 8-6 lead on a basket by
Kanece Richardson. The lead was short-
lived when the Lady Hornets went on the
12-3 spurt. Lafayette opened the game
cold and turnovers were uncharacteristic
of the Jimmy Blankenship coached team.
"Trenton came in and gave us a good bat-
tle," said the Lady Hornet coach. "We did
not shoot the ball well and we did not take
care of the ball like we should have.
Maybe that will open our eyes. We have to
be ready to come every night ready to
play."
Like all good teams, Lafayette overcame
poor shooting from the floor with a strong
defensive effort led by sophomore Sun-
shine Reid. Reid had five block shots in the
win and pulled in (unofficial) 10 rebounds
in scoring only seven points, below her
season average. Reid was whistled for a
technical foul with over two minutes to
play in the third period.
Coach Blankenship removed her from
the .game and she never returned to the
floor.
With Land struggling offensively and
two players saddled with three personal
fouls, Lafayette got a needed lift from
Sharonda Cherry and Cartesha Macklin in
the early going. Both drilled early three-
point baskets in the second in staking the
Lady Hornets to a 28-11 lead. Land scored

; helping her team to a 37-15 half time lead.
Coach Blankenship said his team did not
1 play well but credited Trenton dictating

The Lady Hornets held a
slim 31-28 lead at the inter-
mission and went into the
fourth quarter nursing a four
point advantage, 42-38.
Lafayette opened the fourth
with a 6-0 run that netted
them a 10 point lead, 48-38.
But again, Buchholz refused
to go down. A dry, spell en-

Blankenship. "We started
making our plays and
built the lead."
The Lafayette coach
said his team has be ready
to play four quarters. "We
have had some girls sick
but that is no excuse," he
said. "We have a long
bench now and we just
have to be ready to play. I
thought our bench played
well tonight. Kelsey
(Land) came off the bench
and did a great job for
us."
Land led the Lady Hor-
nets with her 18 points.
Cartesha Macklin fin-
ished with 18 points and
Cherry added 15. Reid
had seven and Kelsey
Land netted six points.

The IRS has issued a
warning to all taxpayers
about a new scam used by
'identity thieves that
promises to give them a
tax rebate from the IRS di-
rectly into their bank ac-
count, provided they sub-
mit the personal informa-
tion to gain access. "Al-
though the government
has not. enacted an eco-
nomic stimulus package
in which the IRS would
provide advance pay-
ments, known informally
as rebates to many Amer-
icans, a scam which uses
the proposed rebates as
bait has already cropped
up," the IRS stated in a
: press release dated Jan.
: 30.
At this time, according
to the IRS, identity thieves
are using telephone calls
and emails to approach
taxpayers with this scam.
According to the IRS, the
caller, pretending to be a
representative of the IRS,
advises the victim that he
is eligible to receive a re-
bate if he files his taxes
early. But, if he refuses to
provide the necessary in-
formation, the caller says
he will not receive the re-
bate unless he does so.
Charles Bronson, Flori-
da Agriculture and Con-
sumer Services Commis-
sioner, issued a similar
warning to Floridians in a
press release dated Feb. 5.
Since the scam surfaced,
Bronson's office stated
several Florida consumers
,, have called with com-
' plaints.
The IRS continually re-
minds everyone they do
not contact taxpayers,
businesses, etc. by phone
or email. Any phone call
or email received that pur-
portedly comes from the
IRS, should be immediate-
ly reported to the IRS.

Spalding said the pages
have aged considerably
since then, but he still
keeps it as a reminder of
his first trips in the United
States. His wife, Gillian,
accompanied him on that
trip. "She is a high level
nursing sister and is one of
my best friends," Spalding
said.
Although this is the first
time Spalding has visited
Mayo, he was very im-
pressed with what he ob-
served. "I like the scenery
with all the dairy farms
and black and white cows.
The small homesteads are
beautifully kept and the
roadsides are all clean and
freshly mowed. The
Suwannee River is so nat-
ural and large," Spalding
said with a smile.
Spalding, who turned 61
last year, lives in Queens-
land near the coast. He re-
tired from being a radio
technologist after 22 years
at a telephone company
called Telstra in Queens-
land. His only son current-
ly works, at Perth Edith
Cowan University located
on the west side of Aus-
tralia. The university has

Born and reared in Aus-
tralia, Spalding's love for
the countryside was in-
stilled in him while grow-
ing up on his parents'
farm. His father, Frank,
and mother, Jean, were
also born and raised in


Spalding shared some
words and phrases that
are spoken in the Aus-
tralian language. Accord-
ing to Spalding, Aus-
tralians say "G'day" for
hello, "Ow ya goin mate,"
for how are you, and
"mum" for mom.

Eating properly is not only good for your overall
health; it's also good for your eyes, especially as you
age. You can consume certain vitamins and nutrients
that researchers have found to nourish and protect the
health of your eyes. Following is a breakdown of
some of those firidings.

Fruits reduce your risk of AMD. A study from the
Channing Laboratory at Harvard Medical School and
Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) indicates
that people who eat a daily diet that includes several
servings of fruit can reduce their risk of developing
macular degeneration (AMD) as seniors. The study
compared seniors' intake of antioxidant vitamins and
carotenoids (like beta carotene) as well as fruits and
vegetables, and how these elements relate to the
development of macular degeneration. Researchers
discovered that people who consumed three or more
servings of fruit per day over a period of 12 to 18
years reduced their risk of developing macular
degeneration by more than 30 percent, compared to
people who ate 1.5 servings per day or fewer.

Vitamin A reduces night blindness. A diet lacking in
vitamin A can cause night blindness, a deterioration
of light sensitive cells (rods) essential for vision in
low lighting. This deficiency also can extensively
damage the eye's cornea to create total blindness.

Sommer, M.D., linked a vitamin A (retinol) deficiency
to the very high prevalence of night blindness in
children of developing countries such as India and
Bangladesh. Sommer found that night blindness
decreased by one-third in children who received
vitamin A. Sources of vitamin A include: cod liver oil,
liver, carrots, sweet potatoes, and butternut squash.
Note: while vitamin A supplementation can be
beneficial, it can also be toxic if taken at abnormally
high dosages. Consult with a doctor before using.

Vitamins E and C slow cataract growth. Results from
the Nurses' Health Study conducted at the Tufts,
University USDA Human Nutrition Research Center
on Aging, demonstrate that supplementation with
vitamins E and C may offer significant protection
against the development of cataracts. Vitamin E
sources include: sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts,
hazelnuts, pistachio nuts, avocados, peanuts, and nut
products such as oils and butters, eggs (one egg can
provide almost 6 percent of the recommended daily
amounts of vitamin E), greens, tomatoes, asparagus,
and sweet potatoes. Sources of vitamin C include:
fruits such as guava, oranges, grapefruit, melons,
grapes, berries, and fruit juices; vegetables such as
peppers, brussel sprouts, potatoes, broccoli, beans,
onions, tomatoes, and squash; meat such as liver and
organ meats; and some seafood and fish.

THE AWESOME LOVE OF GOD

7 he month of February is when
many people celebrate
Valentine s Day. Valentine's
Day is a day when people give
each other flowers, cards, candy and other
presents to let them know that they love
them. When I think of Valentine's Day, I
think of a special day to show love to people
that I care about, but most of all I think
about the greatest gift of love there
has ever been, the awesome love of
God. God gave us the greatest
Valentine of ALL TIME!


The awesome love that God
has for us is the ultimate gift of
love. I am sure that you have
seen pictures of Jesus with
his arms spread out with
the words "I asked
Jesus how much he
loved me and he held
out his arms and said
this much and died."
He loves you so much he -
gave his life for you.


Truly his love is the
greatest love there has ever
been or ever will be. God knew that we
would all need a savior and he gave his only
son to die on the cross for our sins. Jesus did
not have to go to the cross, he did not have
to die, but he willingly gave his life on the
cross that all may be saved. Jesus bore all of
our pain, all sickness, disease, injuries,
sadness, depression, every illness that has
ever existed on his body all at the same time.
He endured what no one else has ever
endured, he endured All of the pain that
exists. He did it so that we can believe and
receive healing in our bodies. We read in 1
Peter 2:24 "Who his own self bare our sins
in his own body on the tree, that we, being
dead to sins, should live unto righteousness:
by whose stripes ye were healed."
He did not have to stay on that cross,
he could have called for the angels to take
him down, he could have said it is too much,
but he never did. Jesus stayed on that cross
with huge nails in his hands and his feet, a
crown of thorns pushed down on his head,
beat beyond recognition, he endured it all
and then he died, he bore ALL of our sins.
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that
he gave his only begotten son, that whosever
believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life." Jesus, the son of God, died
such a cruel death for you and I, now that is
awesome love. God watched as his only son
suffered and died in such pain and agony.
How do you think he really felt watching his
son on that cross? I am sure that the love he
has for all of us is very great, only the
strongest love could watch Jesus die the way
that he did. He knew as Jesus knew that this
was the only way to pay for the salvation of
all mankind. The love is so great, so
amazing, so awesome, the Love of God.
In Ephesians 3:17-18 we read "So that
Christ may dwell in your hearts through
faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and
established in love, may have power,
together with all the saints, to grasp how
wide and long and high and deep is the love
of Christ,"
We serve such an awesome God, he is
our shepherd. He takes care of his sheep, he
knows each one of us by name. God is our
refuge, the place to run to when there is
trouble or if we are in danger. We can always

count on him to protect us. Our God is like a
rock, he is strong and he will never leave us,
we can trust in God, our rock. God protects
us just like an eagle protects her young. God
is our potter, he molds us to be what he wants
us to be, we can follow him and he will direct
our paths in what is the very best for our
lives. Just think, God who is the creator of
everything is also our father! Jesus is not
only our savior but our healer, our best
friend, our helper, he is the King of Kings

with in your life. It is a great time for you to
take something special by to brighten up the
day for patients in a hospital or nursing
home, who may otherwise be forgotten. You
don't have to buy expensive gifts or cards,
handmade cards, and small little gifts, or
something baked or made by you will show
them much love.
The greatest gift you can give
Jesus is to show him how much you
love him by giving him your heart.

We serve such an awesome God,
he is our shepherd. He takes care of
his sheep, he knows each one of us
by name. God is our refuge, the
place to run to when there is trouble
or if we are in danger. We can always
count on him to protect us. Our God
is like a rock, he is strong and he will
never leave us, we can trust in God,
our rock. God protects us just like an
eagle protects her babies. God is our
potter, he molds us to be what he
wants us to be, we can follow him
and he will direct our paths in what
is the very best for our lives.
It is a wonderful idea to give
Valentine's to your family and
friends to remind them that you love
them, just always remember the most
important thing is to let God know
how much you appreciate his
awesome love. This special holiday
is a wonderful opportunity for you to
share the love of God with other
people such as neighbors,
classmates, the postman, a teacher,
anyone you know. You don't have to
buy expensive gifts or cards,
handmade cards, or something you
make will show them much love.
Tell Jesus how much you love him as
your gift to him.

30th Annual Olustee Battle Festival
The 30th Annual Olustee Battle Festival/32nd Olustee
Battle Re-enactment will be held Friday-Sunday, Feb. 15-
17 with the two-day festival in downtown Lake City on
Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15-16. Activities: live entertain-
ment both days, arts and craft booths (more than 150), a
wide array of food booths, children's entertainment,
demonstrations and much more. Parade: 10:30 a.m., Satur-
day, Feb. 16. There is no charge downtown. The battle-
field is located 12 miles east of Lake City on US 90 with
authentic camp sites, re-enactors and a sutler's village at
Olustee. Friday, Feb. 15 is education day with no admis-
sion charge.. A mini battle is held on Saturday at 3:30
p.m., there are also medical demonstrations and a period
music contest at 2:30 p.m. Admission: $5 adults; $2 stu-
dents; and children 5 and under free on both Friday and
Saturday at the battlefield. The 32nd re-enactment of the
Battle of Olustee will be held on Sunday, Feb. 17, begin-
ning at 1:30 p.m. and lasting approximately 90 minutes.
