CFO resigns; AirMedic to stay


While many questions remain
surrounding the current status of
Doctors' Memorial Hospital,
several new details have come to
light, including control of
AirMedic services and a high-level
resignation.
Perry Newspapers, Inc.,
confirmed Tuesday that the
hospital has reached an agreement
with Air Methods Corporation to
take over AirMedic services.

A 2001 Ford truck involved in a
roll-over came within just a few
feet of crashing into a home along
Highway 19 South on Monday
morning.
The truck rolled across the
northbound lanes of Highway 19
around 8:20 a.m., struck an
embankment and continued to roll
two more times before landing
upright--literally at the front door
of the brick home.
The driver of the vehicle, Trevor
B. Kamm, 22, was not wearing a
seatbelt and was ejected from the
vehicle. However, by the time
rescue workers arrived on scene,
he had managed to crawl back
inside the truck to assist Olivia
,Kamm,_1-8, who was pinned in by
the passenger door.
Taylor County Fire-Rescue
(TCFR) firefighters used the
"Jaws of Life" to removed the
damaged door and pull Kamm
from the truck.

In October, Air Methods
Corporation, the largest air
medical transportation company in
the world, purchased FSS
Airholdings, Inc., parent company
of CJ Systems Aviation Group,
Inc., which operated DMH's
AirMedic program.
DMH has been negotiating with
AirMethods since the purchase,
and the terms of the new deal go
into effect Friday, Feb. 1.


Under the agreement, AirMedic
personnel will become employees
of Air Methods, sources said.
Residents should not experience
any disruption in service during the
change-over and the aircraft will
remain stationed at the hospital.
With 27 years of experience, Air
Methods transports some 84,000
patients annually with a fleet of
more than. 340 helicopters and
fixed-wing aircraft in 42 states.


During an impassioned request
for all to assist the hospital, Chief
Financial Officer Terri Parsons told
Perry Rotary Club members
Tuesday that she has resigned from
the hospital, effective in February.
Parsons also outlined a number
of ways people could help the
hospital. She asked business
owners to request that their health
insurance carriers include DMH as
a referrable hospital. A number of


insurance plans do not include
DMH, she said.
She made the same plea to
employees, asking them to request
their employers use insurance
carriers that include DMH.
As for Taylor County residents,
she said they can help DMH by
using the hospital.

Ratliff announces bid for property appraiser


Local businessman Bruce Ratliff
has announced his candidacy for
the Taylor County property
appraiser's office.
Ratliff, a native of Taylor
County, is the son of M.H.
"Buster" Ratliff and the late
Shirley Ratliff, and stepson of
Delores Walker Ratliff. He has two
sons, Blake, 18, and Taylor, 15. His
wife, Vicki Taylor Ratliff, has a
daughter, Hillari O'Quinn, 18.
Ratliff, currently the general
manager of M.H. Ratliff Land
Surveying, serves as chairman of
the Taylor County Planning Board
and is a member of the City of
Perry Planning and Zoning Board.
He also currently serves as vice
chairman of the City of Perry
Board of Adjustments and
Appeals, and sits on the City of


Perry Code Enforcement Board.
Ratliff graduated from Taylor
County High School in 1981,
lettering in varsity football and
baseball for three years. He then
attended South Georgia College on
a baseball scholarship for two
years before transferring to North
Florida Junior College, where he
earned his AA degree in 1984. He
also 'attended Florida State
University.
After college, Ratliff worked
with Brunswick Group (Bayliner
Marine) and served as plant
manager of Omega Chemicals in
Wildwood.
He is a longtime supporter of
youth athletics and a volunteer
coach. He currently serves as
president of the Taylor County
Baseball Booster Club. Ratliff has


served as a volunteer football,
baseball and soccer coach for 10
years in Perry and'Ocala, and
coached 'the Taylor County High
School varsity (2004) and junior
varsity (2005) baseball teams.
He is the commentator for 1400
WPRY's Taylor County Bulldog
Baseball radio broadcast team.
"My experience serving on the
city and county planning boards,
along with the various volunteer
service positions I have held, fully
demonstrates my commitment to
serving the people of Taylor
County. My extensive background
in land surveying and my level of
understanding concerning real
estate, property valuation and ad
valorem tax assessments--and how
they affect both governmental
agencies and the ordinary property

position of circuit court judge
(group 4), currently held by the
retiring circuit judge, the
Honorable John W. Peach.
Craun said he "will bring

Taylor County's beauty



comes from her people


Dear Editor:
Okay, first and foremost Happy
New Year Perry.
I would like to address an issue
that has concerned me for years.
How sad is it when monies are
being used for. improving roads
and building sports complexes
(which by the way is hardly used
and let's not talk about our new
hospital), when there are poor
unfortunate souls that don't even
have the opportunity to have a
:.warm place to stay.
It is sad that I saw a homeless
man sleeping on the bench at the
intersection of U.S. 19 and
Jefferson Street for at least a week
in the rain, the cold and whatever
other conditions the weather
brought about. Don't get me
wrong, I support Taylor County as
much as the next person, but what
about the people who can't support
themselves?
I work at a local truckstop and I
have seen numerous law
enforcement officers bring
stranded people there and drop
them off. I watched them pass by
this man and not even hit the
brakes, and this is a county you
want people to take pride in. Okay!
I'm sure the citizens would take
pride in a county where there aren't


people sleeping on a bench in the
dead of winter or families living in
run-down shacks where the ceiling
leaks and the floors creak only
because their credit scores' aren't
high enough and their jobs don't
pay enough.
You want to talk about pride.
Let's take stock in our children so
they can grow up and be proud of
where they come from. The point
is that Perry needs a shelter and
affordable housing. A place where
rent is not based on your credit
score but the fact that you work
hard and can pay the tent. A shelter
for people whether they live here
or are just passing through. Having
been a citizen of Perry for the last
16 years, I know from experience
what I'm talking about.
I'm a mother of four beautiful
children and server at a local
restaurant. I lived in one of these
broken down houses for four years.
When we looked up, we saw the
sky; when we looked down, we
saw the ground and that was on the
inside of the house. Thank God
two and a half years later I finally
got my HUD certificate. Some
people may not be so lucky. All I
am saying is whether they are here
for 15 years or five minutes when
they come to Perry they are our


citizens and should be treated as
such. There should at least be a
place for them. Whether it be
women, children, men from
whatever walks of life so they can
be safe and warm.
Consider this, what if it was your
family member--be it your mother,
father, son, daughter, wife or
husband or anyone you care about.
How would you feel if it were one
of them or even you sleeping on
the bench in front of KFC? Do
something to help those less
fortunate than ourselves. Don't
ignore this problem because you
never know when the next person
sleeping on the bench might be
you or someone you love. Never
say never. So let's truly keep
Taylor County Beautiful. The
beauty is not in the roads, the
sports complex, and the other
useless ways we have found to
waste money. The beauty is in the
people. Because without the
people living, working, spending
and loving here... there would be
no Taylor County.
My only regret is I let time and
other things get in the way of this
being written sooner. This is in
tribute to the Man on the Bench.

we're in the midst of the longest
drought on record. I'm happy to see
that we have people in government
who have learned that trick about
using "reverse psychology" on
Mother Nature.
If there is a sure way to break the
drought and get some good rain for
a change, it.is to raise rates on
flood insurance. Mother Nature
won't be. able to resist that
temptation.

The hospital has asked the
county to "bail" them out of their
financial hole. I have many
concerns with this issue, and as I
have asked around about it, I have
found that my concerns are shared '
by many of my Taylor county.
residents. I have lived in Taylor
County for three years now. And
being a single mom with two kids,
I have had many encounters with
DMH. Most of which I have been
none too impressed with.
When I was in the process of
moving to Florida, one of the
things that drew me here was the
so-called "state of the art" medical
facilities and hospital. The hospital
was pretty much brand new, in
good working order, and was
supposed to be fully staffed.
A more recent encounter with
DMH involved four trips to the ER
for the same thing. All of these
trips were within a week. It
involved severe abdominal pain,
fever, chills, etc. They put me in a
room, took a urine sample, blood
sample and left. The doctor on
duty came in the room, felt on my
stomach, told me he was sending
me home with antibiotics, but
could not tell me what was wrong
with me.
I started the antibiotics, went
back to the ER two days later with
a fever of 105 that would not go
down. They again took urine and
blood samples, told me I had a UTI
and sent me home. The next visit
went pretty much the same. During
the. fourth visit, my mom called a
doctor that she had worked with at
Premier Medical Center and asked
her to see me in the ER. She
ordered some tests, and told me
that I had a kidney stone that had
blocked off my kidney, and my
kidney was infected. And that the
infection was moving throughout
my body. She admitted me, and I
had to stay in the hospital for four
days. It seems to me that.this was
something that should have been
found during one of my previous
three visits, but it wasn't. The

Wash your hands;

just do it


Our office doesn't make for exciting
drama, but ever so, there are days when I
wish my reactions were captured on film.
I answered a routine telephone call last
week, just to be faced with the question:
"Can you do an article on how people should
wash their hands?"
I tilted my head to the left, furrowed my
brow, wondered if it was a full moon and
tried to be professional.
"Well, I agree that everyone needs to wash
their hands--more than they think--but I
don't really know how we would approach
this topic for a newspaper article," I said
with appropriate interest.
"I'm sick of it," the caller said. "My
daughter started with this virus, and 24
hours later, I had it. Then we gave it to her
babysitter and it ran through her entire
family.
"Yesterday, my husband was having
breakfast with a friend and the friend told
him he'wasn't feeling so good...like he might
be sick or something. Next thing we know,
the friend's sick.
"And what do you think happened at my
house? My husband was up all night, sick."
I grieved for this woman. Having a sick
baby is horrible. Getting it yourself is bad,
too. Passing it on to friends is not a fine way
to maintain relationships. Having it stalk
you is scary indeed.
Sometimes my role, it seems, is to be a
bartender without liquor. I just listened,
allowed the woman to vent and
acknowledged that cleanliness is next to
godliness.
I also shared a story from our former
family doctor. One day when I was venting
similarly, he said matter-of-factly, "What we
need is a good, hard freeze. It will eradicate
the mosquitoes--some of them, anyway--and
it will kill some of these virus strains which
like to live in Florida because the weather's
nice."
So I told the woman, "We need a good,
hard freeze."
"Well, I don't like cold weather," she said.
I told her of its benefits.
"So instead of complaining about the cold
weather, I should hope for it?" she asked.
"And open the windows and the doors," I
said. "Let some good, fresh, cold air into

"You know what they do on cruise ships?!'
she asked me with all seriousness.
My countenance was lifted, and I admit, '!
was curious. :
"No," I said. "What do they do?" I askedi

"When a virus runs rampant on a cruise
ship, they quarantine the ship. They bleach
the whole thing; they air it out. They put jt
out of service until they are confident the~

"Are you suggesting some yellow 'crin
scene' tape outlining the perimeter of Taylor
County with a viral warning?" .
"Yeah," she said jovially. "Something lik
that. I'm tired of this virus..."
I thought the conversation was over, b .t
she had a different idea. "When I go to thli
grocery store and grab a buggy, I just cringe

they have?"
I wanted to suggest that she might be
going over the edge a bit, but you should
never suggest that to someone who might
actually be going over the edge--firs,
because it's impolite, and secondly, because
they might take you with them. :
"Have you tried the anti-bacterial haial
cleaner?" I suggested, remembering thit
tactic from my own travels. I take it whei
I'm fleeting new and unfamiliar germs. ;
"Yes, Lord, I've gone through gallons i.(f
that," she said. "If people would just wash
their hands," she repeated, with a hint if
defeat in her voice.
"Listen," I told her as my mother migtii,
"this too shall pass, There will be o0hgr

"And most importantly, wash your hatidi.
"I promise that I'll tell everybody else to db
the same thing too."
Since I always keep my promises, hetejs

the state of Florida.

College since the mid-1990s and,

College in Madison.
He is the past president of the
Columbia County Bar association
and has served on committees for

Hugh Bradford Molden died Jan.
25, 2008, at UAB Hospital in

a former member of the National
Guard and West Florida Sports Car
Club. Mr. Molden had been

grandson, Rick Fiegel, her parents,
four brothers and three sisters.

Gainesville; a daughter, Trisha

celebrating more than 98 years of
service since their founding.
Again this year, local area Cub and
Boy Scouts will be collecting food
as part of Scouting's annual Good
Turn.


A number of local
neighborhoods will have bags
placed on the doors of residences
this Saturday, Feb. 2. Those homes


will be revisited on Saturday, Feb.
9, beginning at 10 a.m.
"For those homes where bags
are distributed, please leave food
items on the porch where they are
visible from the road," organizers
request.
All items collected stay in Perry
and are distributed throughout the
year by local area churches. For

To commemorate Black History
Month, North'Florida Community
College and the African-American
Student Union are seeking
nominations from the public for
the fifth annual Jenyethel Merritt
Award for Civic Service.
The award will go to a local
African-American woman who has
made significant contributions to
her community. Nominations are
accepted through 5 p.m., Feb. 15.
A committee of AASU students,


faculty and staff will make the
selection. The recipient and
nominees will be honored at a
reception at NFCC on Feb. 27.
The late Jenyethel Merritt was
president of Suwannee River
Junior College, an African-
American community college
established by the' Florida
legislature in 1958 and located in
Madison. SRJC operated from
1959 until 1966 when it merged
with North Florida Junior College.


Merritt was Florida's first
woman president of a public
community college.

J.R. Blue, the son of Randy Blue
of Perry and Shelia Erwin of
Crawfordville, received his
Master's degree in public
administration on Dec. 14, 2007,
from North Georgia College and
State University. He previously
earned his Bachelor's degree from
the same school in August of
2005.
Blue also received his
commission as a second lieutenant
in the U.S. Army. In February, he
will begin a seven-week
leadership course at Ft. Sill, Okla.
Then he is scheduled to complete a
12-week course for Officer Branch
Qualification in the field of
transportation at Ft. Eustis, Va.
Upon completion of these
courses, Blue will be assigned to a
transportation unit with the U.S.
Army Reserve in Tallahassee.

selected for focus group
STaylor County students and their families were selected to take part in a
focus group reviewing a new Web site developed to help students with
disabilities "successfully transition from high school to adult life."
S Project Director Lewis Persons came to Perry Jan. 23 to have Taylor
County students, teachers and families evaluate the accessibility, ease of
navigation and usefulness of the Web site, as well as to seek
improvements. Three focus groups were held in the high school computer
lab, with eight students, seven teachers and two parents participating
throughout the day.
The Web site development project is sponsored by the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services, Administration on Developmental
-. -Disabilities, the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council, Inc. and the
University of South Florida. The site can be accessed at:

:Covenant Hospice will celebrate "25 years of Keeping the Promise"
ith a year-long series of events.
i ':."Public participation, including our patients, families and volunteers, in
iS verything we do to celebrate this milestone will be a big part of this year-
lobng celebration," said Dale 0. Knee, Covenan't president and CEO. "We
want to get as many people involved as possible."
As part of the celebration, Covenant Hospice recently held an
anniversary banquet in downtown Pensacola, where Covenant's corporate
office is located, to commemorate the occasion with the public.
Covenant Hospice has grown into one of the largest not-for-profit
hospice systems in the nation. Today, Covenant has two inpatient units in
the Pensacola area and an average daily census of more than 1,300 patients
in 35 counties of Alabama and Florida, including eight counties of the Big
Bend. The Tallahassee branch office and Perry outreach service center
have been serving the Big Bend for nearly five years.
