Commissioner Joyce Valentino
voted with Phillips and Bartell, but
for a different reason. Valentino was
elected after the previous board com-
missioned a fire study that recom-
mended hiring firefighters to reduce
response times. She said she was not
sure paid firefighters are needed.
"I'm not convinced we need to move
forward with paid firefighters," she
said. "I think we need to revisit that.
I'm not sure there's a need."

t's a lot of bruises and a lot of
sweat, but 13-year-old Lydia
Greiner would rather spend a
Saturday racing along a dirt track
than shopping at the mall or going
to the movies with friends.
"It's just the adrenaline rush,"
Lydia said. "You have all the con-
trol I think that's really cool and
kind of empowering."
SLydia is one of a handful of girls
in Citrus County that competitively
races dirt bikes in motocross.
Motocross is basically a motorcy-
cle race across rough terrain.
An eighth-grader at Inverness
Middle School, Lydia divides her
time between studying, working
out and racing maintaining a
high grade-point average and
impressive trophy collection.
While Lydia has only been racing
for a little more than a year and a
'half, she has won numerous racing
awards including the girls' junior
championship at the Dade City
Motocross at the Pasco County
Fairgrounds in 2004.
S "It's not a sport a lot of people
are interested in," Lydia said, "but
I love it."
Lydia's mom, Barbara Greiner,
said at times, it can be difficult to
watch her daughter because it is
not uncommon for riders to break
arms and legs.
"It's a little nerve-wracking,"
Greiner said. "We always pray, but
we just trust that she'll do her
best."
A few" days ago, Lydia landed a
jump wrong, and while she's unin-
jured, her dirt bike needs some
repairs.
"I fell and it wasn't very pretty.
Now, I have to re-upholster the
seat," Lydia said.
She and her dad usually work on
the bike together, changing the
transmission fluid, air filters and
tightening spokes.
One of the more difficult parts of
racing for Lydia is the start,

because as many as 40 riders can
begin at once.
"You're all going for the same
spot on the track," Lydia explained.
"I've been run over three times."
The pain is .worth it thltough
because Lydia just likes to ride
fast.


While she isn't old enough for a
driver's license, she can ride as fast
as 60,mph when racing.
"It's something I look forward to
doing every time," Lydia said.
Lydia is currently training for the
2005 Loretta Lynn race, the largest
amateur race in the United States.
Lydia said she is simply hooked
on riding, and plans to compete the
rest of her life. One thing .she is
grateful for is the support of her
mom and dad.
Lydia said, "I'm very lucky to
have parents who back me up all
the way."

Hernando. She said her hard work is
worth the effort because
she loves motocross.

District: County's growth has profound impact on schools

Citrus County School District officials plead-
ed their case Tuesday for higher impact fees
they say are necessary to keep pace with furious
student growth.
During a County Commission workshop,
board attorney Richard "Spike" Fitzpatrick and
board Chairwoman Pat Deutschman said


schools already are crammed with students and
growth is not expected to subside.
"Go into a high school or middle school, go
into the hallway and wait for the bell to ring,"
Fitzpatrick said. "Then decide if we have a
growth problem."

shop to discuss a consultant's
recommendation that impact
fees on a single-family home
jump from $3,131 to $6,644. Of
that, the biggest increase is for
schools, from $636 to $2,040.
With that increase, the district Pat
could raise $25 million during Deutschman
five years to pay for new school notes climbing
construction, 'consultant Bob enrollment.
Wallace said.
Impact fees are one-time charges on con-


struction to pay for the impacts growth brings in
such areas as education, roads, libraries and
parks. The commission is expected to make a
final decision at the end of March.
Both Fitzpatrick and Deutschman said enroll-
ment continues upward, despite Department of
Education projections that enrollment will level
off.
Wallace, who estimated enrollment growth of
300 or 400 students annually, said he doesn't
understand how the state could project other-
wise.

Currently, 21 of the district's
schools begin at 15 different
times. The new plan will
change that to three. The times

Right now, the sun rises at
about 7 a.m.,.but some elemen-
tary school students are being
picked up as early as 6:40 a.m.,
Farmer said.
'And it will get worse once
the time changes," she said.
Condensing the times will
also give drivers more time in
between routes, which means
drivers will not have to rush as
much. If a bus is running late,
a driver might have as few as
20 minutes in between routes.
The new times ensure bus
drivers have at least an hour,
Farmer said.
"It's our responsibility to
make sure we maintain safety
in our schools," said Board
Chairwoman Pat Deutsch-
man.
Himmel and school board
members have received
numerous concerns and com-
plaints regarding the new
times, mostly from-elementary
school parents who rely on the
current times to see children
get to school before going to
work, Himmel said.
Deutschman said she real-
izes the new times are an
inconvenience to parents and
hopes people with concerns
will contact the district

on the district's 2005-06 school

p.m. Tuesday, March 8,
Deutschman said.
Also at Tuesday's meeting,
school board attorney Richard
"Spike" Fitzpatrick discussed
the importance of impact fees
to the school district, before
later attending a county com-
mission hearing on the issue.
Impact fees are one of four
ways the state allows school
districts to generate money for
schools.


Young, 56, still poses a threat to the
community and should be involuntari-
ly committed to a secure mental health
facility to receive additional treat-
ment.
He finished serving a 10-year sen-
tence Feb. 1 after pleading guilty in
1995 to raping or molesting seven
women who were recovering from sur-
gery. Before he was to be released from
prison, the state attorney's office peti-
tioned to have a team of psychologists
evaluate him to determine if he posed a
high risk of reoffending if released into
the community. The panel agreed he
was still a threat
The petition falls under the '"Jimmy
Ryce Act," which allows for the com-
mitment of violent sexual predators

1999 law is named after a 9-year-old
South Florida boy who was kidnapped,
raped and murdered Sept. 11, 1995, by a
sex offender.
If jurors reach deliberations in
Young's case, it would be the second
trial in the Fifth Judicial Circuit to
make it that far since the law was
enacted. In the first case, a jury agreed
on Feb. 11 that convicted sexual pred-
ator Donald Lee Campbell of
Inverness was still a danger to re-
offend. He had finished serving a
three-year sentence for the 2001
attempted kidnapping of an Inverness
teen at the boy's home.
The state is expected to call dozens of
witnesses to the stand, including


experts in psychology, who will testify
Young suffers from several sexually
deviant behaviors that make him more
likely to commit future crimes.
More than 100 women came forward
after the first rape allegations were
made against Young. Many of those are
likely to testify this week.
After a probable cause hearing Feb.
11 to determine if a trial was necessary,
defense attorney Elizabeth Osmond
indicated she would, be seeking a
change of venue because of the high
publicity the previous case received.
Young will remain in the Florida
Civil Commitment Facility in Arcadia
until the civil trial concludes.
The trial is expected to last the
remainder of the week

authorities said. But the joke
was on him when he jumped
into the wrong car and was
arrested.
Albert Tasker, who works for
the Monroe County State
Attorney's Office, told authori-
ties he had been drinking with
friends and thought it would be
funny to shed his clothes and
run to a friend's car in the
parking lot of a Key West motel,
according to a police report
, But Tasker apparently got in
the back seat of a car occupied
by a woman waiting for her
boyfriend. The woman
screamed and her boyfriend
appeared. After the woman
called 911, a Key West police
officer found Tasker in the
middle of the parking lot
Tasker, 28, was arrested
Monday morning and faces
charges of disorderly intoxica-
tion and indecent exposure,
both misdemeanors. Officials
with the State Attorney's Office
said a request has been sent to
Gov. Jeb Bush's office to
appoint a special prosecutor to
handle the complaints to avoid
any appearance of a conflict of
interest
Tasker has been placed on

lifelong Michigan resident

Mr. Reding was a cattle truck
driver and general farmer who
was known as the man who
could make or fix anything.
He was preceded in death by
an infant son; a sister,
Katherine Gamm; and a broth-
er, John Reding.

J. Reding and wife Sarah, of

from septicemia, a type of
blood infection. He was 75.
Cabrera died in a London
hospital, said Carmen Pinilla, a
spokeswoman for his literary
agents, the Balcells agency in
Barcelona, Spain.

George W. Morley, a retired
doctor who helped found a sub-
specialty that focuses on can-
cers of the female reproductive
system, died Sunday. He was
81.
Morley died at the University
of Michigan Medical Center
after a brief illness, the univer-
sity said.
Morley helped found the
subspecialty of gynecologic
oncology, and had a career at
the health system that spanned
more than 50 years. He is the
namesake for the George W
Morley Society, a society for
gynecologic oncologists.
Morley, who retired in 1998,
was known in part for his work
as a surgeon for benign and
malignant gynecologic disease.

world, died Monday after suf-
fering a stroke, a family
spokesman said. He was 75.
' The longtime pastor of Los
Angeles University Cathedral
began hosting a nightly televi-
sion broadcast of Bible teach-
ing in the mid-1970s. His
University Network eventually
aired a nightly talk show and
Sunday morning church servic-
es on radio and television sta-
tions in about 180 countries.

Noise ordinance
Just want to take the opportunity
to thank the Citrus County commis-
sioners for helping consider making
waterways more pleasurable for the
people who live along the wateways.
I think it's a very nice thing they've
done to try and get a noise ordi-
nance here. It certainly would be
nice and tranquil along the rivers
again. Again, thank you county
commissioners. You've done a won-
derful job. And thank you, Chronicle,
for publishing the information on
this.
Beat to poodles
The public should have the oppor-
tunity to adopt an animal on the
first day it is available without hav-
ing to compete with the
Humanitarians during the first 20
minutes, or 24 hours. We were at
the shelter that first day the tw9 lit-
tle poodles were going to be avail-
able. We arrived at 10:20 a.m., but

Keep to schedule


Too often, cute, small dogs at the
Citrus County Animal Shelter are
only seen on the Internet, not in the
public's viewing area of the kennel
after a pet's fifth day of required
stray hold. Do they care if someone
wastes their time trying to adopt
that particular pet or a specific kind
of animal? According to their own
Internet site, when the animal is
said to be "available" on a particu-
lar date and time at the county ani-
'"rnal shelter, then it should be aiftt
able. With a large middle-aged and
retired population, all dogs should
be out where they might have a
chance to get adopted by the public
on their scheduled day. Part of the
front row of kennels is occupied by
bite dogs. Move them to the inac-
cessible back row and all the avail-
able dogs to the front row.Why
shouldn't we be able to pick the one
we like? Is the only thing that mat-
ters (is) that you save any animal?
No. We plan to be living with that
dog for its lifetime, and we should
be able to exercise our taste in addi-
tion to saving a pet in need.
Organize firefighters
The editorial in today's Chronicle,
Thursday, Feb. 3, is a bunch of
baloney. We had come from Long
Island and moved here three years
ago. We had volunteer firemen out
on Long Island for (more than) 100
years ... more than 130,000 people
that live there, maybe more ... and
we have firehouses for every town
that is on Long Island. This is a
bunch of baloney. We don't need
paid firefighters. All we need is a
more organized volunteer fire
department with more volunteers to
help our people,

Is North Korea next?
Now that North Korea has told the
world that it has nuclear weapons
and it is not a democratic country,
does President Bush plan on invading
them and making them change their
way of living?
Iraq didn't have weapons of mass
destruction, but Mr. Bush thought
they did, so he invaded their country.
When he found no weapons of mass
destruction, he changed his tune and
said we'll make them a democratic
country even though many of their
countrymen don't want us in their
country or messing with their way of
living.
What has it really got us? Many of
our young men and women killed or*
maimed and billions and billions of
dollars that could have been spent for
our country's welfare wasted on a
country that doesn't want us there.
Mr. Bush, it's about time you start
taking care of the residents of the
United States. Help our homeless,
elderly and poor live better lives.
After all, when have other countries
helped the United States when we've
had major disasters? I can't think of
one.

any amount of time in Aroostook
County, Maine. Nor has he spent any
time in upstate New York, the UP of
Michigan, rural Wyoming, Colorado,

He also would know that to be a
true "redneck" it doesn't necessarily
mean that one is from the South. I
know a number of rednecks from
Massachusetts, some from North
Carolina and a few from Montana.
JeffFoxworthy defines a redneck as
someone with an exquisite lack of
sophistication, of which, Mr. Reese,
you have an abundance. So, no matter
where one comes from, there is
always the chance that he or she
could be a redneck
A redneck is a stereotypical
Southern United States socially con-
servative, rural, working-class white
person with light skin and of northern


European ancestry. The stereotypical
redneck has a beer belly, consumes
cheap American beer such as Bud
Light by the case and holds deeply
conservative Dixiecrat political views
bordering on overtly white suprema-
cist. The redneck lives in a trailer,
drives a large pickup truck with a
Rebel flag decal and a gun rack in the
rear window, has a trucker cap or
baseball cap and a mullet haircut
with long sideburns. Their favorite
activities include hunting, profession-
al wrestling, NASCAR and monster
truck rallies.
So Mr. Reese, although you have it
in your head that rednecks are only
Southerners and that the South may
have a hard time "rising again" or
surviving "as a distinct region and
culture," you should try to get out a
little more. They do have a NASCAR
track in Loudon, N.H.
As Jeff Foxworthy might say, "It
takes a redneck to know one, and I
are one." And you are one, too, Mr.
Reese.

Where do impact fees go?
Why have impact fees at all?
Every new home and business that
is constructed adds about $3,000 or
more a year to the county tax base.
Where does all that money go, or to
whom? Don't developers often pay
most of the infrastructure before
home building begins? My property
taxes are more than $4,000 a year.
