stars' at banquet

There just weren't enough words to
describe the admiration and respect co-
workers and friends had for their honored
guests.
The Citrus County School District recog-


nized its outstanding teachers and school-
related employees Friday night at its annu-
al Galaxy of Stars banquet
"It's because of what you do every day in
the classroom, on the school bus, in the
lunchrooms, in our schools that our schools
are such a success," Superintendent
Sandra "Sam" Himmel said.
Twenty. teachers and 28 school-related
employees were honored for their achieve-
ments and commitment to the school dis-
trict and education.
Throughout the evening, the crowd wait-
ed with anticipation for the announcement


of the 2006 teacher and 2005 school-related
employee of the year.
After each teacher had been.individually
recognized and cheered by the crowd, it
was time for the final announcement.,
Jane Nelson, a .10th-grade Citrus High
School social studies teacher and Patricia
Mitchell, the parent facilitator at Promise
Village, received standing ovations as they
approached the stage.
Nelson was named the 2006 Teacher of
the Year and Mitchell, the 2005 School-
Related Employee of the Year.

A longtime Citrus County school
district employee was killed Friday in
an early morning accident in Citrus
Springs.
James "Manzy" Miley, 51, of Oxford,
was killed after a school district pick-
up truck he was driving was struck
head-on by another pickup truck at.
about 9:11 a.m. on N. Elkcam Blvd.,
near the intersection of.W Redgate,


Drive. Miley, a maintenance worker
for the school district, was transport-'
ed to Seven Rivers Community
Hospital where he was pronounced
dead.
The driver of the other truck, iden-
tified as Matthew Wilber, 39, of
Homosassa, was transported by med-
ical helicopter to Shands Hospital in
Gainesville, where he was listed in
critical but stable condition Friday
afternoon.
Officers from the Citrus County
Sheriff's Office had to close down the


road near the accident for more than
five hours while the crash was inves-
tigated.
Several school district members
came out to the scene when word of
the crash reached them..
Superintendent of Schools Sandra
"Sam" Himmel went to Seven Rivers
to be with Miley's two brothers and
girlfriend.
Florida Highway Patrol spokesman
Trooper Larry Coggins said the inves-
tigation was in its preliminary stages
Friday, but because the accident was


fatal, the crash was being handled as
a potential vehicular homicide.
He said from evidence gathered at
the scene and witness statements, it
appears Miley was driving south
down Elkcam when Wilber, traveling
in the opposite direction, crossed
over the centerline.
'According to witnesses, he (Wilber)
was passing other northbound traffic
in a non passing lane," he said.

recent 3-2 vote to fire the city man-
ager just the last of a series of philo-
sophical clashes between Crystal
River City Council members on
issues, those elected officials have


wrung their hands on occasion and
wished out loud that even urged
- what they call "the silent majori-
ty" to speak up.
Torn by opposing ideologies on
issues that determine what the city
will look like as mandated in city
codes, from business signs to park-
ing boats in front of homes, the
council members have said they
need to know how the people feel.

River woman Thursday has become a

There weren't too many things Sperry
Rademaker didn't do and do well.
When the former Kayak Olympian
moved to Floral City with her husband,
Jack, in 1970, she brought fellow aquat-
ic athletes with her to Citrus County.
"Sperry and Jack were instrumental
in getting national canoe and kayak and
Canadian teams to train during the win-
ter months," said David Arthurs, who
met Sperry in the 1960s through canoe
race organizing.
Rademaker trained Arthurs' chil-
dren in kayaking and canoeing for
years, he said.
Rademaker succumbed to cancer
Monday. She was 65.
Good friend Jan Streib met
Rademaker in 1973. That same year, they
raced together and won at nationals.
Streib said Rademaker trained many
promising kids through the years,
-including eight or 10 who went on to
compete in the nationals.
"Sperry made it possible for these
kids," Streib said. "It took a really, real-
ly gifted person like Sperry."
Rademaker first got her feet wet in
,the sport at a young age and later com-
peted on the 1968 and 1972 Olympic
Kayak teams.
In 1976,,Rademaker coached the U.S.
Kayak Olympic team.
"She was phenomenal," Streib said.
"Once you're on the Olympics, you want
to do more."
And more she did.
From table tennis to race-walking to
watercolor, Rademaker never stayed
put. The walls of the Rademaker's
waterfront home are lined with plaques
and trophies.
Last week, Rademaker received a
Lifetime Achievement award.
Along with her love of sports,
Rademaker is remembered for her wis-
dom and influence.
"She taught me it's my experiences
that matters, not what others think,"
Streib said. "If she believed in you, she
told you."
Survivors include her husband of 38
years, Jack Rademaker of Floral City;
son, Paul M. Rademaker of Fountain,
Colo.; sister, Marcia Smoke of
Buchanan, Mich.; and two grandchil-
dren, Joshua and Hannah Rademaker
of Fountain, Colo.

An empty county sewer line
on the floor of the Homosassa
River might never see the light
of day
The Florida Department of
Environmental Protection
gave the county preliminary
approval this week to fill the
pipe with concrete rather than
remove it from the river.
Earlier this year, the pipe
was taken out of service when
the county extended central
sewer to Old Homosassa.
Taken off the submerged sewer
line was Riverside Resort on
the south side of the river.
The pipe had once connect-
ed Riverside Resort to
rRiverhaven sewage treatment

would have been
astronomical to
remove the
pipe.

out of service when Riverhaven
was connected to the Ho-
mosassa regional sewer system.
With the sewer pipe out of
service, DEP wanted the coun-
ty to remove it from the river


But the county said removing
the pipe would have been cost-
ly and might have disturbed
the river bottom.
A Feb. 10 meeting had been
set to discuss the pipe with
DEP, but Debra Getzoff, who
administers the agency's
Tampa office, canceled when
she learned the issue had been
resolved by her staff, according
to a Friday memo from County
Engineer Ken Cheek
Cheek's memo said the coun-
ty should receive a final order
from DEP to confirm removal
isn't necessary
Commissioner Gary Bartell,
who has headed the drive to
provide central sewer to
Homosassa, Chassahowitzka
and Halls River Road, said
DEP's decision will save the
county money.
"The cost would have been
astronomical to remove the
pipe," he said.

student expulsions
The Citrus County School
Board expelled the following
students Thursday:
A seventh-grade girl from
Inverness Middle School for the
rest of the school year. She was
expelled for possession and dis-
tribution of a controlled sub-
stance.
* An eighth-grade boy from
Crystal River Middle School for
the rest of the school year. He
was expelled for possession of
a dangerous instrument.
N A seventh-grade boy from
the Renaissance Center for the
rest of the school year as well
as the 2005-06 year. He was
expelled for unprovoked battery.
Three 11th-grade girls were
expelled from Lecanto High
School, one for just the third
quarter and the other two for the
rest of the school year. They
were expelled for possession of
a controlled substance.
An 11th-grade boy and a
tenth-grade girl were expelled
from Lecanto High School for
the rest of the school year for
possession and distribution of a
controlled substance.

particular hardship, i.e., boat
repair or just a couple of days
out of the water, or in special
cases where one cannot fit the
boat on the side or back of their
property.
"But would not want to see
boats parked in front of homes
as a normal practice."
J. Holland sent in an idea on
the boat parking issues, saying
that maybe the solution would

ting run over by the left front of
the van.
Investigators say trees and
other obstacles prevented
streetlights from lighting the
yard. Burch said Bartlett was
handling things the smart way
by trying to avoid confrontation,
and the only mistake he made
was getting behind the wheel
after drinking.
Burch said police conducted a
thorough investigation into the
accident and everything was
done to ensure Bartlett was
taken care of. He said the lead
investigator who talked with
Bartlett was upset about his
death.
Burch said he sat down with
the investigator, and the two
looked to see if anything was
missed, or if something could
have been done differently.
They both agreed they did all
they could.
"This is a very tragic set of cir-
cumstances. Two lives are now
over," he said. "Family members
are distraught, we are dis-
traught"

Friday in his Davis
hotel room in
Miami Beach, according to
officials there. He was making
a film called "Retirement,"
said Arminda Thomas, who
works in his office in suburban
New Rochelle and confirmed
the death.

said Davis' grandson called
shortly before 7 a.m. when
Davis would not open the door
to his room at the Shore Club
Hotel. Davis was found dead

A dedicated group of volun-
teers are doing their part
to save one of Citrus
County's precious waterways.
The Homosassa River Alliance
received a $5,000 Community
Education Grant from
Southwest Florida Water
Management District and plans
to use the money to test water
quality along the
Homosassa River
and its tributaries. THE l

In a perfect world, every major
spring or river would have an

which looks out for its best inter-

rivers will be healthy enough for
people to enjoy, unless more res-
idents take an active role in
preservation.
An even better idea would be
for the county to take a more

Citrus County's Evaluation

that money before you can use it.
Impact fees
I'd like to comment about the .
impact fees. I agree it should be
raised for residential slightly, but not
the full increase. But I'd also like to
see the Chronicle check into the
impact fees on the commercial. I
think it's exorbitant what fees they're
trying to charge. And I think it will
stop a lot of mom-and-pop commer-
cial enterprises from starting up and
adding to the community. So would
you please check that out?

like them to contact the board of
county commissioners in Citrus

efforts. It's time the county
became a more active partner
and help lead future efforts to
preserve Citrus County's water-
ways.

Stolen ashtrays
This is to whomever stole the two
marble ashtrays I left on my patio
at the end of my garage sale in
Citrus Hills last Sunday. They were
going to be donated to Habitat for
Humanity with the rest of my left-
overs, but I guess you needed them
more. You know, theft is a crime
and smoking causes cancer. You
have some big problems.
Check your egos
Once more Crystal River city offi-
cials have held a meeting that
resembled a grammar school play-
ground fight. The citizens elected
these people to serve the needs of
the city, not their individual egos.
The pompous behavior of some
members of the council are laugh-
able given their past belligerent
behavior. If you can't check your
egos at the door and work for the
good of Crystal River, then please
resign. The citizens are sick and
tired of your childish behavior,
which makes Crystal River the
laughing stock of Citrus County.

During the past 12 years, the rail-
road has undergone numerous revi-
sions and additions. However, it has
also suffered severe wear and tear
through changes in climactic condi-
tions, a difficult environment and just
plain old age.
It has become necessary for 2005 to
be recognized as the year of refur-
bishing, and we will be conducting a
major overhaul of many of our rail-
road's components. The club feels it
would be too difficult to try to offer
our clients a smooth-running opera-
tion during this time, therefore, we
will not be operating an Ad Train this
year. We hope, however, that the
beginning of 2006 will show a
refreshed and dependable railroad,
and it is possible that we will be con-
tacting our many friends for renewed
support

What has happened to those won-
derful articles in Sunday's paper writ-
ten by Andrew Wood? I have been
remiss in not asking sooner, but also
remiss in not writing to say how much
information and guidance they pro-
vided when he was writing. Maybe if
we had told Mr. Wood how much his
writing meant to us, he would still be
providing us with free counseling.
His byline, "Maximizing Your
Potential," was one of the first that I
used to read in Sunday's paper. I
believe that I have clipped all of them
in the past three years that he wrote
for the Chronicle. Yes, the advice was
geared to businesses, but I found that
almost every article contained some
information that could be used by a
non-profit organization and that is
where my interest lies. His success in
marketing a business can be applied
to marketing our non-profit organiza-
tions. Did anyone else pick up on
this?
Let's encourage Andrew Wood to
continue sharing his vast knowledge
with readers of the Chronicle.

Learn rules of road
Recently, while traveling to the
Lakes Region Library of Inverness, I
drove from State Road 41 via
Montgomery Street south to the traffic
light at State Road 44.
At this intersection, which is con-
sidered a two-lane road, there is no
left-turn lane. While waiting for the
red light to change, a horn was
tapped, then again, but I did not know
where it was coming from until I
looked into the mirror. The woman
continued to blow her horn for me to.
move. Therefore, I showed her by
pointing that I was proceeding
straight ahead. Her response to me
was I should be in the left-turn lane. -
Do you not agree with me that there
are people who need to learn the lay-.
outs of roads before they honk the
horn at the person who is within their
right at this intersection? I am sorry if
the driver did not leave early enough,
to reach her destination.

The sheriff's office and
DCF began investigating the
case Jan. 21, when the Dollars'
16-year-old son was taken to
Seven Rivers Regional
Medical Center by ambulance.
The teenager was treated by
emergency room doctors for
suspicious injuries to his neck
and head, but doctors were
alarmed by the boys' low
weight and malnourished
state, a news release read.
DCF contacted the sheriff's
office with its concerns that
other children at the house
might also be malnourished.
Five of the seven children -
a 16-year-old boy, 14-year-old
twin boys and girls ages 12 and
13 said they were punished
for stealing food, telling lies
and messing things up, the
news release read.
The twin boys weighed just
36 and 38 pounds each -
about 80 pounds below normal
weight for their age.

The other two children, a
17-year-old girl and 14-year-
old boy, told detectives they
were not abused, Tierney
said.
The abused children told
detectives the couple forced
them to sleep in a closet in the
master bedroom so their par-
ents could keep an eye on
them, according to the sher-
iff's office news release. The
Dollars hung wind chimes on
the door so they would know if
the children tried to escape,
Tierney said.
The children said they sur-
vived on about a cup of rice
each day their favorite food.
"I don't know how many kids
would tell you rice was their
favorite food," Tierney said.
The children told detectives
they would go as long as two
days with no food at all.
"That just begs the question,
how many times did that hap-
pen over the years?" Tierney
said.
The family lived a life virtu-
ally secluded from society,
since the children were home
schooled, Tierney said.
The children are believed to
have been adopted by the
Dollars. There are no reports
of abuse related to the Dollar
family reported in Florida,
according to a DCF news
release.

interviewed, but detectives do
not consider her a suspect in

When all else fails, blame
the floor.
After watching host Citrus
close the third quarter with a
9-2 run to open a 14-point lead,
Central coach John Sedlack
walked to midcourt to com-
plain to the officials about the
court condition.
"I don't know if maybe there
was some dust on it," Citrus
coach Tom
Densmore
said. "It I
wasn't wet, W

thing it could have been was
dirty, so we swept it."
So play was halted while
school officials scrambled to
sweep the court, but the dust-
free surface offered little in
the way of relief for the Bears.
Citrus responded with an 8-0
run that took all the drama out
of an eventual 63-38 blowout
"We thought it was hilari-
ous," Citrus center Walter
Howard said of the custodial
delay. "We had never seen any-
thing like that before. It was
nice because we got a little
breather, but we thought it was

defense that dominated, lead-
ing the Yellow
Jackets to a 54-45

snapped the
Panthers four-
game winning
streak
Leesburg (16-6, 10-2) blan-
keted Lecanto star Drew
Zimbro all game, holding him
to two points on 1-for-13 shoot-
ing.
"He just was off," Leesburg
coach Brandon Scott said.
"He's a better player than two
points. We didn't hold him to
two points, he just had an off
