Patrol car hits horse on State Road 44

A sheriff's patrol car struck and
killed a horse running loose just
before dawn Monday on State Road
44 West.
The horse crossed the median into
the westbound lane and was struck by
the patrol car.
After impact, the patrol car crossed
the median and the two eastbound
lanes smashing into the rear of a car
driven by Bonnie Mae Coman of
Crystal River.
The patrol car continued off the
roadway and slammed head-on into a
pinie tree on the verges of the


Withlacoochee State Forest.
Although his patrol car was totally
destroyed, Citrus County sheriff's
deputy Curt Clendenny suffered only
minor injuries.
Coman was not injured, according
to the accident report.
Clendenny, said later that as he
topped the hill he saw a truck had
stopped and was blocking a lane. The
truck driver had seen the horse and
was trying to chase it from the medi-
an when the horse appeared in front
of the deputy's car.
The car's air bag activated as his
car veered left across the median and
the other lanes and then, he was told,
flew through the air before crashing
into a dead tree.


"That's why the brakes didn't work
then, because I was -on them," he
said.
The horse was struck by two other
westbound vehicles following the col-
lision.
Twenty-year-old Andre Budnick
said his vehicle was the third to hit
the horse in the roadway.
He was on his way to work in
Crystal River when he said his pickup
truck hit a heavy object in the road-
way about a half-mile from the State
Road 44 intersection at County Road
491 at Ponder Avenue.
He said the impact tipped his truck
onto the two wheels on the driver's
side and nearly sent his vehicle
across the median of State Road 44.


He said he maintained control and
forced his vehicle down the median
where the truck ploughed the passen-
ger side front wheel into the soft
earth.
"I had to keep it from going over
there into the other lane and I did,"
he said.
'After that for about 10 minutes I
was shaking. My legs were wobbly," he
said.
He said another motorist in anoth-
er truck had already hit the horse and
almost went down the culvert on the
north side of the highway.
"He left because he had to get to
work," he said.
Sheriff's deputies are seeking the
owner of the horse.

County Commissioner Gary
Bartell on Monday said he is
trying to figure out why
$250,000 of tourism bed tax
revenue was left in an internal
bank account that he and the
Tourism Development Council
knew nothing about until
recently.
Bartell, the new TDC chair-
man, said on Monday that the
money was not included in the
county's 2004-05 budget and he
wants to know if county staff
has stored other revenue in
bank accounts the county com-
mission and public know noth-
ing about.
I The commissioner said he is
making no allegations, but he
believes there should be more
accountability for county tax
dollars.
'"Apparently, no one knew
anything about it except the
financial people," Bartell said.
The money was generated
by the county's tourism tax
money in previous years, but
never spent and was not
included in the 2004-05 budget,
said Cathy Taylor, director of
the office of management and
budget. However, she said the
money shows up on county
financial reports.
County Administrator
Richard Wesch said the prac-
tice of not spending 100 per-
cent of the county's funds is
nothing new, nor is the prac-
tice of not including those
funds in the budget, but he
said would be willing to talk to
Taylor about changing the pol-
icy if commissioners think it's
a problem.

money as reserve funds in the

Voices echoed Monday from
the Old Courthouse steps into
a serene crowd of about 100
right-to-life supporters, mark-
ing the 1973 Supreme Court
decision upholding abortion
rights.
Together. they sang, pro-
claimed and prayed for an end
to abortion.
"For 32 years, we have set
aside this day to remember
Roe vs. Wade," said Emily
Lytle. "But what are we doing
the other 364 days of the
year?"
The 18-year-old won the
Right to Life Citrus County
2004 Oratory Contest and sang
"Who is on the Lord's Side"
with her family.
"We are killing our future,"
Lytle said in a separate speech
prepared for the rally. "How
long will it last?"
Mary Lou Hendry, director,
Life Choice Center of
Inverness, pointed to a white
scroll filled will tiny black foot-
prints, symbolizing the 89,000
plus abortions last year in
Florida.
"For every footprint, there's
a mother walking in guilt,"
Hendry said.
Both Hendry and Marilyn
Chisholm, board president of
the Pregnancy & Family Life
Center of Inverness, said their


centers offer post-abortion
counseling and want to reach
out to those hurting.
"We have seen many women
who have had abortions,"
Chisholm said. "We see what
abortions have done to fami-
lies."
Chisholm said the center is
always in need of volunteers,
donations of baby items and
financial aid for items not
donated.
"This would be a concrete
way for you to help others
choose life," Chisholm said.
Keynote speaker and author
Viki Holland told her story of
how and why she adopted her
daughter into her family.
A silent prayer march
around the Old Courthouse
followed the presentation.
Chapter Chairman E.
Jerome Bombly said he was
impressed with and inspired
by the rally's speakers and
performances.
"I think it was probably one
of the best presentations over
the years," Bombly said.
Bombly said the public's
dedication behind pro-life
causes comes from the coun-
ty's strong Christian beliefs.
He said he's thankful Citrus
County does not have an abor-
tion clinic, but he's concerned
about reaching those getting
abortions in nearby counties.
Still, he's hopeful and knows
the message is "getting out
slowly, but surely."

new cafeteria. The cafeteria Is one of two buildings at the school where
flaws were discovered last summer, delaying its completion. The walls of
the building were missing grout and steel. The school district appointed a
blue ribbon committee to Investigate the failed processes that allowed the
building to be nearly completed before the flaws were discovered.

named Lu is set to celebrate his

bridge would cost about
$11,000, Simpson said. He said
the high cost to .the state was
why Bradshaw was charged
with felony criminal mischief.
"We're going out Friday
morning to view the area,"
Simpson said. "If it gives them


some idea of the magnitude of
what happened, I don't see
anything wrong with that"
Bradshaw said the dirt he
removed had been placed
there illegally more than 60
years ago to dry out cattle graz-
ing areas. He said he removed
the illegal fill, but left the
state's bottomland alone.
"Chester did not take out fill
from the bottom of the lake,"
Bradshaw said Monday. "He
took out illegal fill."
Bradshaw is represented by
attorney Michael Blackstone,
who arranged the boat ride to
Otter Slide, the area of Potts
Preserve where the berm was
removed by Bradshaw.
Blackstone will provide the
airboats.
Howard has agreed to
Blackstone's request to have a
judge's trial instead of a jury
trial. Howard will decide
Bradshaw's fate.

Crystal River, at 9:15 p.m. Sunday
on a charge of domestic battery.
Police responded to a Seven
Rivers Hospital in reference to a bat-
tery that occurred at a residence. A
woman said she was playing video
games on a couch at a house when
Young put his hand over her mouth
and nose, according to reports.
The woman said she was able to
get his hand off her mouth, but the
man forced his hand into her mouth
and down her throat, according to
reports. The woman said she
escaped and locked herself into a
bathroom. Neighbors heard her calls
for help and detained Young so the
woman could flee with her 7-year-
old son.
No bond was set.

DUI arrest
Michael Garrett Tindale, 25,
13890 S.E. 51st Summerfield Court,
at 1:28 a.m. Sunday on a charge of
driving under the influence.
His bond was set at $500.

on a charge of domestic battery.
A deputy responded to a Crystal,
River home in reference to a battery.


Hile told the deputy a man threw her
on the ground, causing her to hurt
her hand, according to the arrest
report. Hile's hand appeared red
and purple in a bruised area on the
top of her right hand. The injury
appeared to be caused prior to the
incident, according to the report.
The man told the deputy Hile
scratched and pinched him in his
chest and stomach area. The man's
stomach and chest area had small
marks on it.
No bond was set.
John Thomas Crossley, 27,
Inverness, at 4:43 a.m. Sunday on a
charge of domestic battery.
A deputy responded to an
Inverness apartment in reference to
a battery. A witness told him all par-
ties were out drinking, according to
the arrest report. Crossley got into
and argument and left the witness
and a woman at a bar.
Later that night, Crossley burst
into a house yelling and threatening
a woman who was lying in bed,
according to the report. The witness
told the deputy Crossley hit the
woman on her left leg above the
knee, according to the report. The
woman's story matched the witness-
es. No marks on the woman's leg
were visible, according to the report.

Kirk that there would be no
catharsis that day and they
should skip talking about their
polarized relationships.

"We had the money sitting
there to do the entire thing and
didn't know it," he said.
The TDC learned about the
money when Taylor was invit-
ed' to explain an unrelated
financial question late last
year. In the process of answer-
ing, Lyons said Taylor men-
tioned $250,000 of bed tax
money
"It's disturbing to me that we
had that money sitting there
and didn't know about," he
said. "There ought to be full
disclosure by the county of all
the tax dollars. It's the people's
money."

respect for each other during
that process, she said, their
meetings and dealing would
continue to be laced with ani-
mosity as they locked each
other into a continual, non-pro-
ductive back and forth. She
said no one was blameless in
such a situation: "It's like a


ping pong match."
She told them they had to set
aside any personal differences
and personal agendas and
work together. They must focus
on keeping it on an adult level
- even when the other person
did not, she said.
Though she told them, "The
council shouldn't necessarily be
in lockstep," she added, "It's got
to be collegial decision-mak-
ing."
She told them though con-
sensus building isn't easy, they
were doomed to the continuing
cycle of infighting if they didn't
all rise above the personal dif-
ferences.

to get better as the meeting
went on Saturday, but it would
be up to each one of them to
change the way they related to
each other if the situation were
to change. "I'd charge each one
of them to monitor their own
participation in the group deci-

She said they had allowed
differences to put up barriers
between them, making it
almost impossible to find com-
monalities and to look for
agreement rather than discord.
Aside from making meetings
miserable, she said, it also
affects both citizens and city
employees. "The impact on
staff has to be horrendous," she
said, warning it's hard to keep
good people under such an
atmosphere.
"There's, great potential
there," she said, pointing to the
goals the group created once
they got down to working
together Saturday.
All were very intelligent peo-
ple, she said, and each proba-
bly felt he or she had the city at
heart, but if they continued in
the pattern they had fallen
into, then rather than elevating
the image of what government
can be, they would, unfortu-
nately, continue to diminish it.

(Michelle), with all' the dogs & horses, are running through life's
big obstacle courses.

Thursday evening at the sher-
iff's office annual awards cer-
emony.
Sheriff Jeff Dawsy awarded
the agency's second-highest
honor the Medal of
Distinction to Corporal
Matt Taylor and Deputy Dan
Slingerland.
"Presented in recognition.
of your exceptional courage
and determination in the pur-
suit and capture of a danger-
ous suspect," Dawsy said. "On
the morning of April 24, 2004,
you joined a vehicle pursuit
of a suspect believed to be
responsible for the death of
Florida Highway. Patrol
troopers."
Dawsy said the men put
their personal safety on the
line when they pursued the
suspect and detained the sus-
pect's female passenger.
Deputies Dave Gater and
Kurt Lynn each were hon-
ored with the Ribbon of
Distinction at the Citrus
Springs Community Center.
Gater's perseverance and
diligence in resolving an
extremely complex case and
Lynn's swift and decisive
action to transform a tragic
incident into a meaningful
learning experience earned
the honors.
"In September 2003, you
received a request from the
FBI to investigate the"alleged
victimization of an Indian
national living in Citrus
County," Dawsy said.
"Despite a lack of clear and
convincing evidence, you fol-
lowed your own instincts that
told you this woman was
indeed a hostage."
, Dawsy said Gater broke
communication barriers and
determined that the victim
was being held against her
will. He went beyond the call
of duty to see that the victim
was returned to her native
India.
Lynn's efforts helped heal
and educate the community
during the aftermath of a
tragic shooting.
"On Oct. 3, 2004, you
responded to a residential
shooting involving two of your
students, one of whom died,"
Dawy said. "In response to
the shock and horror felt by
the community, you organized
and taught numerous gun
safety classes."

Authors share kaleidoscope of local stories


S eeth Miko-Trimpert,
local author of "Bear
Crossing," set on the
Withlacoochee River, and "The
Monastery," was the guest
speaker at the January meet-
ing of the Crystal River
Woman's Club. A registered
nurse and president of the
local Pen Women's group, she
told us "You are just you and
whenever we have taken care
of the you that we are, then we
have effectively taken care of
others family and friends
that depend upon us."
She spoke of writing as a
craft, the courage to let things
just happen when we are writ-
ing, the determination to be
alone and let the characters
roam around in our head and
talk to each other. Writing is
also not knowing what will hap-
pen in what we write, until it
happens in our stories. She
writes of mature, strong
women in her stories.
Her next book, "Dremieter"
will be an Irish manor house
story.

Passionately, Adkins spoke
of the erosion of the American
way of life by modern technolo-
gy. He believes the nobler, gen-
tler times are gone, but the
memories remain in his collec-
tion of stories from the front
porch of his grandfather's
Homosassa home, that he built
along with the old Homosassa
post office out of cabbage palm
trees. As a teenager, he was a


soda jerk at the soda fountain
near the post office where,
sometimes, when his grandfa-
ther wasn't looking, he'd give
free Cokes to the pretty girls
who stopped by after school.
His book "River of Many
Fishes," the original name for
Homosassa, is a spellbinding
tale of the main character, John
Hansen, whose moral lessons
we can all take to heart.

C itrus County is comprised
of thousands of caring
people who understand
the personal commitment that is
needed to provide for those who
are less fortunate. In this com-
munity, the United Way has been
the most successful way for
neighbors to help neighbors as
g'illions of dollars have been
raised by this organization for
nearly two decades..

Certainly trends, methodology,
tactics and processes will be
studied by those who work close-
ly with this organization, by staff,
directors and volunteers. But
nothing will be able to change
the simple fact that charitable
dollars are being tugged at from
more directions than ever
before.
The world keeps getting bigger
and there's just not a whole lot
we can do about that.
Outstretched hands have
crossed the oceans and crossed
the homelands. The cries for
help are as heartfelt from across

Middle School will have an
11-week gun-safety aware-
ness'program following the
shooting death of a stu-
dent. Several years ago,
the Citrus County Shooting
Club tried repeatedly to cALL
promote the Eddie Eagle 563
Program to our schools. 053"
This is-a gun-safety pro-
gram for children devel-
oped by the NRA. The schools
weren't interested.
Noon or midnight
This is in response to the "Hourly
gauge," the person that called in
and said that noon and 12 midnight
is neither p.m. or a.m. You're right;
12 o'clock straight up is either 12
o'clock a.m. at midnight or 12
o'clock p.m. at noon. Now 12:01 at
noon becomes p.m., you know. But
if this is all you have to worry about
in life, you need to get a life.
Blown away
I have no oak trees or anything

send the messages and ignite the
compassion of those who can
help. This is admirable but
only when we can be reassured
that those smaller agencies, the
ones that the United Way's
umbrella promises
to cover, are not left

agencies that depend on its sup-
port will die.
The United Way works and
must continue to work. The
strength of a community is rec-
ognized when people come
together to solve problems.
It will be as the strength of our
benevolence is continuously
tested.

Motel tipping
I was just wondering how come
you haven't written anything about
tipping at motels. Motel workers
work real hard, too. They deserve a
decent wage, too, and I think they
need to have a response to this.
County airports
FYI to the Inverness Airport caller:
The city of Inverness has nothing to
do with the Inverness Airport. Both
the Crystal River Airport and the
Inverness Airport are owned and op-
erated by the county. The Crystal
River Airport is a wonderful asset to
the city of Crystal River. The
Inverness Airport is a liability and
an eyesore and an embarrassment
to the city of Inverness.-
Health care cost
I would like to know why the pres-
ident is spending billions and bil.

Iraq when attention needs to be
directed toward our health care
industry, where our normal working
folks who put in 40 hours a week
can't go home and go see a doctor

Electoral votes matter
Why do we have an Electoral
College? Why do we need one? What
was necessary when it was thought up
may be out of touch in this day and
age. Right? Wrong.
It is more necessary today than it
was 200 or so years ago. Why? The
object of the Electoral College was to
make sure one group could not domi-
nate another group and run away
with the ball game.
However, when one party gets
cranky with the other party, they
resort to a filibuster instead of work-
ing things out One president wanted
to pack the federal court with people
he knew would back his ideas. So, it
goes, on and on.
Now, one sorry man didn't get elect-
ed because he won the popular vote,
but not the electoral vote and cried
that he should have been elected.
Poor baby, he still is sucking his
thumb and dragging his "blankie"
around with him wherever he goes.
Let's say that we eliminate the
Electoral College. Let's say it's one
man, one vote, winner takes all. Let's
say that California, Texas,
Massachusetts and New York join
together and get their voters to vote
as a bloc for things that will benefit
them, but not Montana or Rhode
Island or any other smaller state.
Would you like that if you lived in a
state with a small population?
Let's say that all the Christians in
this country decided to vote for a par-
ticular politician. They get together
and elect a fundamentalist Christian
by sheer weight of numbers. Do you
think the Jewish minority, or other
minority that isn't Christian, would
like that
What if we change the Christians
for Muslims and they get the votes -
would you like that?

Bob Wardrop, in his Jan. 19 letter,
has finally accomplished something I
have been unable to do get through
the Chronicle's protective screen,

month taking exception to Marilyn
Day's "selective info" letters pub-
lished in early January. In my letter, I
believe the first one published, I
again tried to point out that Day, as an

Party, was spreading party propagan-
da under cover of personal opinion,

edited out this information. But,

getting it in print Day and Ruth
Anderson, also with the committee,
are the party's one-two punch of
Democratic dogma. They should be
compelled by the Chronicle to reveal
their affiliation with the Democratic
Party, as should any member of any
political party or political action
group opining as ordinary citizens.
Freedom of speech and opinion are
an American right But deception by
omission is not
The response to Day's letters clear-
ly shows she has no credibility here.

President Bush is endangering my
retirement and the retirements of
millions of Americans by taking the
first step in his plan to dismantle
Social Security.
Millions of Americans each week
give money to Social Security. We look
forward to and count on the same
type of benefits when we retire.
Recently, White House sources
revealed their plan to cut promised
benefits to retirees by nearly a third.
And these cuts are guaranteed -
whether you opt in to the Bush plan
or not
For those entering the workforce
today, that means more than a 25-per-
cent cut in the retirement benefits
they're counting on; for their chil-
dren, it guarantees a 46-percent cut
We can't stand by and let George W
Bush and the Republicans cut our
promised guaranteed retirement ben-
efits especially when so many of us
are counting on Social Security to
help us lead a happy, healthy life
when we retire.
