If growth stalls, the economy
will start to die.
That was part of the message

mit results, the five most
important things the commu-
nity needs to do to improve the
local economy during the next
five years are:

Two brothers linked to a
string of crimes last year
avoided possible life prison
sentences Thursday by agree-
ing to plea deals.
William Cavaco Jr., 30, and
Steven Eric Cavaco, 26, of
Hernando, pleaded no contest
to numerous charges that were
either reduced or dropped as
part of their agreements.
Steven Cavaco received an
eight-year prison sentence
because prosecutors consid-
ered him the mastermind
behind the crimes. Last
January they broke into an,
Inverness man's home armed.
Last February they planned a
murder plot of an acquain-
tance.
William Cavaco received a
two-year prison sentence after
several charges were reduced,
including conspiracy to com-
mit murder. Both men
received credit for time
served in jail after their
arrests last March,
The Cavacos' first troubles
started after the burglary of an
Inverness home owned by
John Heatley, who reported
the theft of a safe containing
$50,000 in cash, $10,000 in jew-
elry and three firearms.
In February, police arrested
Steven Cavaco after he was
pulled over during a traffic
stop. Police found a safe with
several of the stolen items.
Heatley said he owned the
items.
William Cavaco was arrest-
ed after a witness told a
Sheriff's detective he had
come to have a lot of money
after the burglary.
According to court records,
he had gone on a shopping
spree, which included a $6,000
car. Cavaco used $50 bills,
which were consistent with
the money taken from the safe.
While in jail, he was
charged with evidence tam-
pering. According to his arrest
report, he was recorded on a
jail telephone trying to contact
associates to retrieve buried
guns from the burglary.
The most serious charges
were levied against the broth-
ers in March, when authorities
accused them of conspiring to
murder for money.
According to investigators,
Steven told William to kill an
Inverness woman because she
hadn't returned $1,000 he
loaned her.'
Records say William Cavaco
met with the 21-year-old
woman Feb. 19 and told her he
was supposed to kill her if she
didn't pay the money back
The brothers also were
charged in April with dealing
in stolen property after
Sheriff's deputies say the pair
tried selling stereo equipment
from a car they had broken
into.
The state attorney's office
* asked that restitution be paid
back to the victims, including
S$50,000 to Heatley and $3,000.
to the stereo equipment's
owner.

(HMA) will soon acquire. Brancato has
been the hospital's chief operating offi-
cer for the last 10 years.
Her promotion takes effect Feb. 1.
Brancato began working at Seven
Rivers 20 years ago as a critical care
registered nurse in the Intensive
Care/Critical Care Unit. Two years later,
she became quality assurance coordi-
nator. She also served three times as
the interim CEO.
A statement from Chairman of the


Board Hari V lIyer, M.D., says of.
Brancato: "Her long-standing dedica-
tion to this facility and the community it
serves, combined with her proven skills
will guide the hospital as it continues to
expand its services and provide excel-
lence in health care to our community."
Iyer said Brancato is a "personable
and highly energetic executive" who is
expected to improve performance at all
levels of the organization.
She is a board member on the
American Cancer Society, the Seven
Rivers Medical and Educational


Foundation, and she belongs to the
Crystal River Women's Club and"Tampa
Bay Domestic Security Task Force.
In a statement, Brancato said she is
looking forward to assuming the new
position.
"I came to the area over 20 years ago
and I have made it my home," she said.
"My husband works in the community
and my daughter attends school locally.
I am committed to Seven
Rivers Regional and plan to be a part of
its growth for years to come."

Pirates swarmed Beth
Cornelius's classrooms last
week wearing bandanas, eye
patches and hooks for hands.
Rather than plunder for gold
or treasure, the pint-sized
pirates taught family and
friends about famous sea dogs.
Cornelius teaches gifted
classes at Lecanto Primary and
Pleasant Grove Elementary
schools. She didn't intend for
the children to become so fas-
cinated with pirates, but decid-
ed to use their interest to cre-


ate a semester-long project.
At the start of the school year
the class was learning about
shipwrecks and reading
"Robinson Crusoe." As they
learned, children drilled their
teacher on the pirates behind
the stories.
"When they get interested in
something that's the route I
take," Cornelius said.
That's part of the gifted pro-
gram letting students pick
the subjects they are interested
in with Cornelius guiding their
studies.
'At first, I thought it would be
boring because it was some-
thing more to learn, but it was
really neat learning about the
pirate stuff," Lecanto fifth-
grader Sandi Boyington said.

lines, mapping and, of course,
imagination.
Sandi's two favorite aspects
of her project on pirate Anne
Bonny were building a small-
scale ship out of odds and ends,
and writing a story on what she


would do if deserted on an
island.
"An idea popped into my
head, and then I couldn't stop
writing," Sandi said.

project wearing a bandana,
nose ring and other pirate
garb, as if standing guard. Joel
said his favorite part was com-
ing up with his own idea for a
ship, named the Crab Two
Billion.
"I liked making the ship out
of junk," Joel said. "We didn't
have any directions; we could
make it however we wanted."
Like Joel, Sandi said she
liked building her boat.
"I got to plan how I'd use
stuff," Sandi said. "I got to do it
my way."

Relaying personal medical information
to emergency workers isn't always possi-
ble when a crisis arises. .
File of Life kits, devices intended to pro-
vide life-saving information, are now
offered through a partnership between
Citrus County Sheriff's Office and
Hospice of Citrus County.
"Hospice came to us and said we'd like
to do this program, but we can't afford it,"
Sheriff's spokeswoman Ronda
Hemminger Evan said.
Evan said the trademark kits have not
been widely distributed in several years.
She hopes to find other organizations
interested in distributing them.
Hospice spokesman LeRoy Rooks Jr.
said the partnership project is a good
effort by both agencies to better serve
county residents.

"With something like this, partnering
with the Sheriff's office gives that much
more of a focal point to people," Rooks
said.
Rooks said the program targets the
county's elderly population.
"We see a lot of single, older people in
their homes alone," Rooks said.
The bright-red, magnet is a sleeve with a
white information sheet people can fill out
and is easily accessible to emergency med-
ical workers.
Evan said Sheriff's deputies and emer-
gency-medical teams are trained to look
for the kit on refrigerators. It's important
to use pencil when filling out the form and
to keep all information updated.
Nature Coast EMS Battalion Chief
Wayne Martin said the kits are extremely


useful and he hopes they become more
widespread.
"When I find one, a lot of the informa-
tion is fantastic," Martin said. "It allows
me to spend less time on the scene and
more time dealing with what's going on."
Martin said sometimes family members'
emotions run high in an emergency situa-
tion and they have difficulty remembering
patient information.
"If the kit is there, even if it's not updat-
ed, at least it gives you the ballpark of what
you need."
The pre-printed card allows people to
record a brief medical history, medical
problems, known allergies, insurance
information and emergency contacts.
Evan said 10,000 kits are available on a
first-come, first-serve basis.

"I shook his hand at a rally in Orlando
and got his autograph," Mitchell said.
As- excited as Mitchell was about
attending the event, his father Garrick
Case said that wasn't the highlight of the
trip.
"Mitchell played in snow for the first

according to arrest reports.
On Jan. 3, a woman told police
that Stonerock approached her
and grabbed her purse from
inside her cart when the woman

replaced the woman's purse
with a shopping basket, accord-
ing to reports.
She was charged with robbery
by sudden snatch.
Her bond was set at $5,000, not
including previous charges in
separate incidents.
On Jan. 5, police arrested

Chronicle
A 24-year-old Crystal River
man was arrested Wednesday
on charges of stealing items that
he later sold to a pawnshop.
John David Crites, of 453 N.
Sams Point, was charged with
armed burglary, grand theft,
providing false information to a
pawn broker, dealing in stolen
property and possession of a
firearm/concealed weapon by a
convicted felon.
A man reported that someone
stole three handguns and
ammunition from his Crystal
River home between Dec. 22
and Jan. 3, according to- an
arrest report. He identified

Crites as a suspect,
When detectives checked a
local pawnshop they learned
Crites had sold a Rossi .38-cal-
iber revolver to the shop.
Crites said he did pawn the
gun, but could not give detec-
tives details about how he got
the weapon, according to the
report
Detectives later learned
Crites is a convicted felon and
on parole in Wyoming.
Crites was also charged with
selling two rings, a grinder and
paint sprayer to a Crystal River
pawnshop, according to
reports.
Crites total bond was set at
$59,000.

will costs residents, she said
she understands what being on
a strict budget means. Raising
children by herself, she said,
she has to be careful of every

business experience, she said,
"I'm good at budgets."

Dunnellon Garden club to host show

The Dunnellon Garden Club will host
its annual fashion show, luncheon and
card party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday,
Feb. 4, at the Holy Faith Episcopal Hall
on Blue Cove Drive in Dunnellon.
Club members will model fashions
from "Denise's Boutique on Wheels."
Many styles and sizes from her collec-


tion will be available for purchase.
Lunch will consist of chicken salad,
various other salads and desserts. Door
prizes will be awarded.
Dunnellon and local-area ladies are
invited to this annual gala and fun-
filled event.
This is the club's only event that rais-
es money for the club's scholarship
fund. In past years, the club has award-


ed $1,000 to a deserving senior of the
Dunnellon High School's FFA Program.
The deserving student must plan to go
to college and study agriculture, horti-
culture or a related field.

Double standard

deposit a check from one banking
institution to another, it takes five
business days to clear. Why the dou-
ble standard?
Stingy to poor
I'm calling about the Hot Corner
topic, "Exemption," of Jan. 10. I
cannot believe some people are so
outraged about helping the poor
and less-fortunate seniors of this
county. Most counties in Florida
already give the extra exemption.
Citrus is one of the few that does
not. The official of the U.N., who
said America is stingy when it
comes to helping the poor and less
fortunate, was right. They won't
even help their own poor; never
mind the world's. ...

M y sister Debbie in
Wisconsin sent me
a card the other
day in which she observed
something that shocked
me.
It's one thing to sprout
white whiskers and see
wrinkles around my squint-
ing eyes and to have my
kids call me old, but I was
genuinely taken back when Steve A
my sister noted from the FABI
card that since the death of & FOEl
my Uncle Bill in California,
I am the oldest surviving
male in the clan.
How can that be?
In my mind at least, I am still just
one of the kids in the throng of
cousins, brothers and sisters playing
around at my grandmother's house,
but, now, after a series of deaths of
family members in the past several.
years, I am sitting alone at the head of
the council of elders, where grandpar-
ents used to sit, wondering how in the
heck this could have happened.
This is, I am sure, something many
of you have already experienced but
for me, it's something that makes me
feel like maybe I really am getting old.-
To drive this home, we had a little
family get-together in Sun City Center
the day after Christmas.
When we got there we learned that
my younger brother Jim had earlier
spent several hours in an emergency
room because he had experienced
what he thought was a heart attack
He has been abusing his body with
beer and cigarettes for years, but still
that reminder of his mortality shook
him up. It wasn't his heart; it was
another organ.
For me it's like I'm next in line

Look, I know we are all
destined to die sooner or
r later. The impermanence of
all things except mathemat-
ics and music is one of the
basic facts of life. But when
the demon stares you in the
)rthur face and grins, it's a little

recognition is morbid but it
is not morbid; it's the one
big incontrovertible fact about life. A
fact. A truth. Death.
Shoot, all you have to do is work and
live around Central Florida for awhile
and before long you are logging con-
siderable time spent at funerals, say-
ing the Big Goodbye. There are plenty
of reminders that time is passing all
too quickly.
Lately I've gotten to check the ages
of people who get written up on the
obituary page. More and more are
younger than I am now.
For me, this being the oldest male in
a family created by my paternal
grandparents shortly after World War
I is just another reminder that after a
glorious ascent through the 60s, 70s,
80s and 90s, my body's life is now on its
downward trajectory; it might be a
long shallow dive that I hope will be
healthy, but with every passing year
the speed increases.
This increasing velocity, this pass-
ing of years all too rapidly, is well
known among those who have picked
up speed and have come to the real-
ization that that there are no brakes or
parachute to slow the descent
This was in part why I planned a

sons and I to fly out to Las Vegas. Not ,
to gamble but to ramble across some
of my old stomping grounds out West .
We rented a fancy Cadillac and
cruised in comfort to the Grand
Canyon and Death Valley ahh,
there's that word again.
It was a wonderful trip. It was cold
and clear and the light was magic. The
kids got to play in snow for the first 0
time.
They got to see one of the world's
biggest examples of erosion. It was
great to be out West again where
mountains and land spread out under
a really big sky, a vast expanse of
rolling land where no-see-ums and
skeeters didn't exist
The Grand Canyon, I see now, is a
touchstone in my life. At periods of
change, like after graduation from 4
high, school, after a divorce, after my,
new wife and I left Florida for Oregon
and a few other times too, I have made 4
the pilgrimage to the Grand Canyon. j
Now as an older guy, I was back with 4
my family, to show our kids this great i
wonder of America; to seek a kind of
comfort.
The Grand Canyon is an old, old
friend and being there once again was
a very big treat for me, a personal i
reunion.
Through the perspective of geologi-,
cal time that the Grand Canyon pro-
vides, the recognition that this. little 1
speck of humanity' is getting older just.

Meeting deserves praise
I would like to commend the
Crystal River City Council for the way
it conducted the meeting Jan. 10.
The agenda was quite full, two
pages, with more than 15 items to be
considered; plus a considerable
amount of discussion from the public.
This was accomplished in about two
and a half hours in a professional and
intelligent manner, much to the relief
and pleasure of the large audience.
Goufincilwoman Susan Kirk, chair-
woman, conducted the meeting with-
out Mayor Kitchen. Kirk's leadership
abilities were evident-- she kept the
meeting moving forward at a steady
pace, making sure everyone was given
the opportunity to "discuss" all the
items. She consistently asked each
couticil member if he or she would
speak to the issues, thus creating a
feeling of comradeship.
It was self-evident that the other
council members were comfortable
with the decorum. There were no
harsh words, just good government at
work
As a resident and voter in Crystal
River, I want to see this teamwork
continue. I want to see this decorum
continue. I want to see the council
continue to perform in the outstand-
ing manner that it did at this meeting.

Warriors struggle late

For a half, the Seven
Rivers basketball team
played Trinity Catholic to a
tie.
But the Warriors only man-
aged 10 second-half points
and lost 46-37 to the Celtics.
Junior guard Lacey Lyons
scored 10 first-quarter points,
helping the Warriors (12-6) to
an early 10-4 lead. But after
the first quarter. Trinity
Catholic (12-8) changed from
its man-to-man defense to
concentrate on Lyons.
From that point, she failed
to score again in the face of
constant double and triple
teams, and Seven Rivers'
offense sputtered.
"We don't have a big
enough guard to cover her
but after the first quarter, I
don't think she scored again,"
Trinity Catholic coach Mike
Bowe said. "We just decided
to stop her because, fortu-
nate for us, no one else looks
to shoot"
The Warriors stayed with
Trinity Catholic in the sec-
ond quarter behind strong
free-throw shooting, going 9-
for-10 in the quarter and 11-
for-12 in the half.
In the second half, the
Celtics defense took over,
allowing only two points in
the fourth quarter. Trinity
Catholic shot 19-for-53 over-
all and grabbed 16 offensive
rebounds.
"In the second half, we had
to limit them to one shot and,
fortunate for us, they don't go
deep on the bench so they
were tired," Mike Bowe said.
"We could run what we want-
ed to and get a lay-up wheh
we needed to."

DUNNELLON It was
raining bricks in Marion
County on Thursday.
Host Dunnellon connected:
on just 15-of-38 field goal
attempts, but that was enough
to outlast the Hurricanes, who
shot a woeful 10-for-39 in a 34-
31 loss.
The two teams combined to
shoot 32 percent from the field
on a night when it was hard to:
tell if the fans in the stands
outnumbered the players in
uniform.
"We're talking about a team
that is going through a lot of,
growing pains," Tigers coach:
Val Bazarde said. "We lost:
three seniors and 30 points of:
scoring, so we've had a hard,
time this year putting the ball:
in the basket"
It was the junior trio of
Krystal Earnest, Shea McNeal,
and K.K. Bateman that was the'
difference down the stretch for:
the Tigers (3-10). While Citrus:
stayed on the perimeter for
much of the game, Earnest,
McNeal and Bateman attacked:
the basket and combined to:
score all 14 of the Tigers'
fourth-quarter points.
Earnest rallied Dunnellon:
early in the final frame by hit-:
ting her team's first three field'
goals to turn a 23-20 deficit into:
a 28-26 lead.
From there, McNeal took:
over. The Tiger point guard
repeatedly penetrated down,
the stretch and capped off her:
night by nailing a running'
bank shot with a minute to play
that proved to be the game-'
winner.

but took the loss in stride.
"The kids played real hard,"
Mayer said. "We're learning
our lessons. We're going
to get better.
Everything we do ,- ...-
this year is going -
to be to our ben-
efit. It's better to
come out here than
stay at home and not play
anybody. If we pay attention to
good team like Citrus, then.
we'll see what we have to do to
be competitive."
The Hurricanes got going
early. Twenty-five seconds in,

kick a minute later and scored
his second goal of the evening


to give the Hurricanes the 4-0
lead.
Led by Chris Redfield, Matt
Gronau and Vicky Kennedy,
Bishop McLaughlin tried to
mount a counter attack, but the
more experienced Citrus
squad was unforgiving and
rarely let the visitors past
midfield.
"We tell our kids to play one
way," Citrus coach Andrew
Castorina said. "We don't- do
anything different regardless
of who we're playing. We don't
come into any games expecting
to win or lose, we just want the
kids to come out and play the
way they're taught in practice."


Bishop McLaughlin's best'
chance to score came in the,
27th minute when Gronau:
came barreling into Citrus' end;
on a breakaway. Steelfox, who:
came in relief for starting goal-:
keeper Ricky Mitchell in the:
20th minute, preserved the:
clean sheet by charging from
his net and cutting down'
Gronau's shot just as the fresh-
man let it go. It was one of two
saves Steelfox would make ofi
