When Linda Alcorns moved from Cleveland
to Florida, life was supposed to get better.
Leaving two failed marriages and a lifetime
of unhappiness, she set out to make a new life.
Instead, her life fell apart
On Saturday, as friends gathered at the ded-
ication of her new home, Habitat For
Humanity's 22nd home in Citrus County,
Alcorns thanked God for all the hardships she
had gone through to get her to this. place of
blessing.
"I don't for a moment regret the rough
times," she said. "It's because of those rough
times that I'm here and I'm so grateful."
Just 10 years ago, she arrived in Citrus Hills
"footloose and fancy free." She had built her
dream home and wanted for nothing. At the


time she worked as an LPN. Then her health
started to go bad and she fell, hurting her
shoulder and later her back Unable to work,
and unable to get workmen's compensation
benefits, she fell behind in her bills.
She met a man who offered to take care of
her financially, and out of a sense of obliga-
tion, married him. They stayed together for six
years, continuously struggling financially.
Someone had suggested she get a divorce so
she could be eligible for medical insurance or
government aid, so she did. However, the
advice she received was incorrect
She was left without income, without med-
ical insurance and without a spouse.
"I lost everything," she said. "My house that
was supposed to be my home forever, it was
gone. I felt like a failure. I was 50 years old -
where was I going to live? Would my kids have

The council tries to keep a number of
desired categories on the board (such
as an architect and a contractor) filled,
although filling the board according to
the categories is not mandatory. The
basic requirements for membership
were understood by the city to be that
the member either lives in the CRA dis-
trict or runs a business there.
When city officials checked to see
that Thomas' contractor's license was
valid so he could fill the category, they
said they found his license had expired
- which wouldn't have necessarily
spurred his removal, according to City

chance to get a flu shot in Citrus
County.
The health department will
sponsor a flu vaccination clinic
at St Benedict Catholic Church
near Crystal River. The vaccine
is available to people in high-
risk categories.
The vaccine is part of a ship-
ment of more than 200,000
doses purchased by the state
last week from .California. The
vaccine was distributed
statewide.

beginning at 11:30 a.m. The vac-
cine will be administered on a
first-come, first-served basis.

section of U.S. 19 and Ozello
Trail south of Crystal River
The state's prediction of a
light flu season this year
appears to be accurate,
although it is early. Citrus
County has only one confirmed
case of the flu this season.
However, Davis said, the
county has had several cases of
people exhibiting flu-like
symptoms, and she said the flu
season generally peaks around
the last part of February.
She said interest among sen-
ior citizens remains high, but
overall interest in flu shots
apparently has waned, if the
most recent clinic is any indica-
tion. -
At the Citrus Springs flu shot
clinic, 600 doses of vaccine
were available, but only 300
people showed up to receive
shots, Davis said.

CodeRED Emergency Notifi-
cation System to alert residents
about an emergency.
The ultra-high-speed tele-
phone communication system is-"
Internet-based, dials 50,000

delivers a recorded message to
either a live person, voice mail
or answering machine.
The system is used for fires,
missing persons, bomb threats,
hostage situations and other
emergencies.
Residents with unpublished

has filed his response to the ,
county in its lawsuit against the ,.
city about the annexation of
property into the city last year. *,
La Croix said it is now up to .
the judge to decide the case. He,
said there was no time limit for
the judge, Richard Weinberg, to
make his decision.
The county charges the city
illegally annexed about 520
acres at the south end of the
city, which contains property on
which RealtiCorp wants to build
a Wal-Mart and other commer-
cial and residential develop-
ments.
La Groix,-after filing acom-
plaint about the judge's'handling-
of the case, had tried unsuc-.
cessfully to have the judge
remove himself, saying in light
of the complaint, the city did not
feel it could get a fair trial.
A citizens' group also has filed
suit about the annexation. La
Croix said that case had not
been consolidated with the
county suit and would be han-
dled separately.
Schoolhouse starts
spring sign-ups
Sign-ups are beginning for
the 2005 spring session of the
Citrus County School District's
Little Red Schoolhouse
Academy.
The academy is a four-week
interactive, hands-on, education
series in which participants will
learn about district operations.
Topics to be covered include:
budget, safety, student services, -
testing and special programs.
There also will be tours of the
Instructional Resource Center,
Withlacoochee Technical
Institute and the Marine Science
Station.
The training will be from 6:30
to 9 p.m. April 4, 11, 18 and 25 ,

term representing Hernando
County, said the selection
process probably took longer
than it did in Citrus because he

Terry Wayne Freeman, 31,
Crystal River, at 1:52 a.m. Saturday
on a charge of domestic battery.
A police officer responded to a
Crystal River house in reference to a
domestic battery. A woman told
police Freeman became angry
when she refused to give him any-
more medication, according to the
arrest report.
She said she attempted to call
911, but Freeman pushed her away
while she was holding a young child,
which caused her to bump into an
older child. The woman had no
injuries, according to the report.
Freeman told police he pushed
the woman because he was angry.
No bond was set.

Domestic
battery arrest

Homosassa, at 1:25 p.m. Sunday on
charges of domestic battery and
child neglect.
A deputy responded to an unlisted
location in reference to a domestic
battery involving a child. A woman
told the deputy she and Bullington
got into an argument and he choked
her while she was holding a 1-year.,
old girl, according to the arrest
report.
She said Burlington pushed her
through a doorway, causing her to
fall and the baby's forehead strike
the door, according to the report.
The deputy saw a purple bump on
the, baby's forehead.
Bullington told the deputy hbe
grabbed,the woman, by- her throat
.and. choked her because she
choked him. The deputy saw a small

idea of the restoration council,
said the Senate president
approved her appointees from
Citrus County some time ago.
The 12-member restoration
council is composed of a six-
member Citrus County Task
Force to work on issues here
and a six-member Hernando
County Task Force to examine
issues in that county. Generally,
the two task forces won't have
to meet as a full council unless
they have common water
issues facing both counties.
But Dean and Argenziano
said they believe the restoration
council can be effective in
obtaining special projects
money from the Legislature.

Real Estate broker in Florida
and Maine.
He was a building contractor
of homes, apartments and
office buildings. He developed
several properties, including
Serendipity Mobile Home Park
in Pinellas County. Later he
developed properties in Citrus
County, including Crystal River
Village, a manufactured-home
community in Crystal River.
Survivors include his wife of
46 years, Jean Viano
Whitehurst, of Clearwater; two
sons, Don E. Whitehurst of
Redondo Beach, Calif. and
Michael R.' Whitehurst, of
Clearwater; a grandson,
Tanner Whitehurst, of Clear-
water; a brother, Robert J.
Whitehurst; and many nieces
and nephews.

linrlinary meeting.


By working together, Citrus County
has benefited from this Council's devel-
opment of community-led programs
that were effective in addressing the
health care needs of Citrus County res-
idents.
In order to continue providing suc-
cessful programs, community input and
assistance is important and needed to
ensure that next year's projects are just
as effective.

Wildlife park event going to the birds


Homosassa Springs

Experienced and novice birdwatch-
ers are invited to participate in the next
monthly bird walk scheduled for
Saturday, on the Pepper Creek Trail at
Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park
An experienced birder will lead the


walk on this trail, one of 19 new birding
trails in Citrus County that are part of
the newly opened West Section of the
Great Florida Birding Trail.
Participants will meet at 7:45 a.m. at the
entrance to the park's Visitor Center,


and thie bird walk will begin at 8. If you
have binoculars and a field guide, plan
to bring these with you.
Pepper Creek Trail is approximately
three- fourths mile long, and follows
along the park's tram road connecting


the Visitor Center on U.S. 19 and the
west entrance on Fish Bowl Drive. You
can either walk back or wait and take
the boat back after the park opens.
There is no charge to use the Pepper
Creek trail, or for the return boat trip.
Monthly bird walks will be scheduled
throughout the year, except the months
* of June through August and December.

REGULATION AFFECTING THE USE OF LAND


An Application for Amendment to the Land Development Code Text has been reviewed by
the Citrus County Planning and Development Review Board (PDRB) and is being
forwarded with recommendations to the Board, of County Commissioners to adopt or
change a regulation affecting the use of land of the area shown in the map in this
advertisement. The Application was submitted by the Department of Development
Services, Community Development Division.

The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) will hold a public workshop on the proposed
regulation, affecting the use of land will be held on January 25, 2005 at 2:00 PM and a
public hearing on February 08, 2005 at 2:00 PM at the Citrus County Courthouse, 110 N.

accessory structures; By providing for codification, severability, and an effective date.

Development Services, 3600 West Sovereign Path, Lecanto, Florida 34461. For more

In 1997, shortsighted Citrus
County voters defeated a
half-cent sales tax increase
proposed by the Board of County
Commissioners (BOCC) to fund
the construction of an urgently
needed countywide
water and sewer
system. THE I
Since then, coun-
ty government has Water a

its hand as it sought OUR O0
state grants for its Hooking

infrastructure. As a
consequence, pro-
gress has been incremental,
painfully slow, and at the
expense of our future water
quality.
Now, even this unpredictable
funding source is drying up.
With Gov. Bush holding firm to
his policy that state grants must
be matching grants, the
Legislature, not wanting to
invite a veto, has indicated it will
no longer submit a water and
sewer bill to the governor with-
out local matching funds.
Facing reality, Commissioner
Gary Bartell, who has spear-
headed a regional water and
sewer system for the county's
coastal areas, presented a bold
funding proposal at the last
BOCC meeting. The proposal
called for the marshalling of $3.3
million in local matching monies


by redirecting county budget
funds earmarked for other proj-
ects.
Thanks to Bartell's bold pro-
posal and a refreshing spirit of
compromise that placed the

no longer take the cheap route of
passing the financial buck to the
state for our water and sewer
infrastructure needs, the mar-
shalling of local matching grant
dollars is a necessary invest-
ment for our future water quali-
ty.
Nonetheless, while the fund-
ing plan is a necessary invest-
ment to assure our future water
quality, it is only the first of many
more steps that must be taken in
the face of burgeoning growth.
Thus, it is imperative that the
BOCC continues to muster the
political courage and embrace
the spirit of compromise.

In that comment of "smoking ver-
sus non-smoking," what the caller
doesn't realize is that when people
smoke, they are already killing
themselves, So whether they die for
our country is just irrelevant. What
they're doing when they smoke is,

secondhand smoke is killing inno-
cent people around them.


Clean it up
This is for the BOCC. This is for
Commissioner Joyce Valentino:
Since she took Josh Wooten's job,
maybe she should start taking care
of business on the roads, like clean-
ing up the highways and the county
roads and everything .... At least
Josh Wooten cleaned up the place
and was doing it all the time. Let's
get on the ball.

enough prisoners in jail; put them

for both Lecanto and Citrus, the senior
knocked down both of his foul shots to secure
a 71-67 victory and a season sweep for the
Hurricanes.
After sitting out the first quarter for disci-
plinary reasons, Ross made his eight second-
half points count
"I've got a new respect for people that
come off the bench because it's hard to get
into the game," Ross said. "(The free throws)
are the most important part in a game like
this. I missed one earlier, but I made them
both at the end."
Citrus (11-4, 6-2) scored the game's first
seven points, going on a 9-2 run later in the
opening quarter and kept the lead the entire.

"We've had some classic battles here
throughout the years," Citrus coach Tom
Densmore said. "I just know that if Donnie
hadn't hit those two free throws somebody

we'd still be playing."
The Panthers (8-7, 2-5), trailing by as many
as 13 in the beginning of the final period,
fought back into the game late behind strong
offensive rebounding from Drew Zimbro and
Richard Chaney. They came within two
points after a Chaney offensive rebound and
made shot, but couldn't get any closer.
"Early in the game we dug ourselves a
whole and the rest of the night we spent
climbing out," Lecanto coach Chris Nichols
said. "We got a great game from Richard
Chaney, during the second half he took over
for a while."
Chaney finished with 17 points while
Zimbro had 14, and the pair combined for 11
offensive rebounds inhe game. Lecanto had
19 offensive rebounds-in the game, meaning
its 23-for-77 shooting performance-was good
enough to keep the game close.
Howard scored 16 points and grabbed 11
rebounds as the Hurricanes won the
rebounding battle 43-34.
"It's been real sweet to sweep them in foot-
ball and basketball," Citrus junior center
Walter Howard said. "It's been real sweet for
the seniors, and I'm looking forward to com-
ing back and doing it again next year."
The Hurricanes received a strong per-
formance from Brad Green, who started in
place of Ross and scored eight points with
seven rebounds.
