The tip of the target arrow pressed
into the hollow of Charles Lambert's
neck. He was crouched, cross-eyed
with concentration. Perspiration
glistened on his brow.
The other end of the arrow was
pressed hard against a thick pine
board held by a reluctant reporter.
"There's only three things you
have to remember if this goes
wrong," Lambert said. "Nine. One.
One."
He leaned forward and like a fin-
ger pushed into an inflated balloon,
the soft skin of his windpipe
stretched over the pointed metal
arrow tip.
With a sudden surge, Lambert
pushed hard and rocked the reporter
back on his heels; something
snapped and the pressure vanished.
Instead of piercing his neck, the
arrow broke in the middle. A dime-
sized ring in Lambert's neck
remained reddish blue.
He smiled and swallowed. He said
the physics of the demonstration
combined with his martial arts con-
centration made the exercise less
dangerous than it seemed, though he
cautioned the untrained not to
attempt such a stunt at home.
Lambert is an accomplished magi-.
cian, a martial arts instructor and a
licensed mental health counselor
who was making his point that with
visualization, positive self-talk and
attention control, people can accom-
plish their goals.
With a master's degree in psychol-
ogy and a doctorate in education, he
advertises himself to businesses as a
sales-oriented behavioral scientist
He mixes humor, outrageous illusion
and dramatic demonstrations to get
people to recognize that they have all
it takes to get all they want
His book, "Your Inner Edge,"
which he will be signing in a couple
of weeks at Poe House Books in
Crystal River, outlines his method

He says he has come up with sim-
ple but powerful ways that people
can use to do more with their lives.
Self-talk, uttering positive affirma-
tions to that bio-computer that he
says is our subconscious, is one step
to self-control.
'"ust like a computer, you have to
know how to talk to your bio-comput-
er. If you tell it you can, then you can.
If you tell it that you can't, guess
what?"
-Another way is to take control, he
says, is to set goals and then create a
life plan to accomplish those goals.
"Most people are amazed at how
easy it is to take charge of their
lives," he says. "Fifteen minutes a

up and running."
One personal goal he visualizes is
to become a corporate trainer in
addition to becoming a personal
coach and a motivational speaker,
offering inner fulfillment and help-
ing people to reach peak perform-
ance.
The only problem, he says, is that
it's difficult to convince business


people how beneficial his eclectic
methodology can be.
Claudia Nieto, a recent graduate in
a Masters in Business Administration
program at the University of South
Florida, is one business-oriented
person who sings his praises.
She said she watched Lambert
give a lively demonstration to her
MBA group and afterward, she and
some others got in touch. The Tampa
resident said she told Lambert, that
since her graduation her student
visa was expiring, she needed to find
a job in the U.S. or she would be obli-
gated to return to her native
Venezuela. The problem was she

Sheriff's deputies arrested a
Dunnellon woman early Monday
after she reportedly stole a credit
card from a co-worker's purse ...
that had been left in their break
room, and then used it to rack up
a $525.16 bill at three Inverness
businesses.
Natalie Nicole Rodriguez, 18,
8876 N. Travis Drive, admitted to
deputies that she took a credit
card from a co-worker's purse.
The co-worker, a 17-year-old
Beverly Hills girl, worked with
Rodriguez at Publix in Hernando.
Rodriguez said she made pur-
chases at a Texaco gas station,
Bealls department store and Wal-
Mart Supercenter in Inverness.
The items purchased included
gas, clothing from Bealls and
expensive perfume, and hair care
products and makeup from Wal-
Mart. The purchases were all
made Sunday evening within an
hour of each other.
According to the arrest report,
this is what happened:
The victim became suspicious
Sunday night after her father
received a phone call from his
credit card company asking if he
had just made large purchases in
Inverness. The woman told her
father she did not buy anything
and when she checked her purse,
she found her credit card miss-
ing.
The victim's father called
Bealls and the manager gave him
a description of the person who
used the credit card. The victim

The corner of Apopka
Avenue and U.S. 41 in
Inverness spelled double trou-
ble for drivers Monday after-
noon when four cars collided
minutes apart in two separate
accidents.
None of the drivers or pas-
sengers involved was seriously
injured, sheriff's officials said.
Mildred Walker Moss of
Hernando, traveling east on
U.S. 41 in a gray Isuzu,
attempted to make a left onto
Apopka Avenue and collided
with a maroon Ford Windstar
van traveling west on U.S. 41.
Kimberly Russell of Rome,
Ga., drove the van. Her hus-
band, Donald, rode in the pas-
senger seat
Sheriff's public service offi-
cer Bob Strongarone arrived at
the scene soon after the 2:05
p.m. crash. Both vehicles
drove into the Chevron auto
service center on the corner to
complete a crash report.
About 10 minutes later, Ruth
Bega of Floral City, traveling
east on U.S. 41 in a light blue
Ford Escort, attempted to
make a left onto Apopka
Avenue and collided with a
black Buick Rainier traveling
west on U.S. 41.
Joe and Rose Vega were rid-
ing in the SUV It is unknown
where they live.
Sheriff deputy Justin
Ferrara responded to the sec-
ond crash at 2:15 p.m.
All cars suffered damage to
either their front or back
bumper.
Strongarone said he didn't
see the second accident
because his back was turned.
He said he doesn't see too
many accidents at the busy
intersection.
"It's been a long time since
I've seen a double header like
this," Strongarone said.
"Fortunately, no one was hurt."


New Year's holiday crime, traffic activity down

The numbers don't lie.
Officials from Citrus County Sheriff's
Office, Crystal River Police
Department and Florida Highway
Patrol reported a 38 percent drop in
total arrests made in Citrus County dur-
ing the 48-hour New Year's holiday
period.
Sheriff spokeswoman Gail Tierney
said 23 arrests were made between
Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 this year, down from
the 38 arrests made between Dec. 31
and Jan. 1 last year.
"That's probably pretty good for a
very public holiday, especially when
you are talking about three law enforce-
ment agencies," she said. "The num-
bers speak well for people's overall
behavior."

last year's New Year's holiday period

were driving under the influence
arrests, she said. Only one DUI arrest
was made this year,
Tierney said CCSO received 1,242
calls for service this year during the
holiday period, compared with 838 calls
for service during last year's holiday
period.
Last year, Inverness calls for service
were received by Inverness Police
Department and were not included in
the 838 tally, she said. CCSO has cov-
ered the Inverness area since IPD's dis-
solution earlier in 2004.
"That's not to say 400 calls were from
Inverness this year," Tierney said.
"There were significantly more calls for
service, but as we said, Inverness
wouldn't have been on our beat."
Tierney said two community
resource deputies teamed up with four
traffic deputies to perform a special
operation, known as saturated
patrolling, between 7 p.m. Dec. 31 and 3
a.m. Jan. 1.


During the 8-hour period, the team
issued 42 warnings and 11 citations, she
said.
She said community resource deputy
Ken Wear said "people appeared to be
obeying speed limits" during the "pret-
ty quiet evening."
Areas of State Road 44, U.S. 41 South,
South Apopka Avenue, U.S. 19 and
Grover Cleveland Boulevard were tar-
geted during the operation, she said.
"He described it as an unusually
quiet evening," Tierney said. "He also
mentioned that having more wrecked
cars maybe made an impact, too."
Crystal River Police officials
responded to two DUI cases, two
domestic battery cases, two trespassing,
one disturbance case and one aggravat-
ed battery case during the 48-hour holi-
day period, according to the police
chief's daily log report.
It's unknown whether the CRPD
cases were actual arrests or calls for
service. No one at the department was


available Monday to comment about
New Year's weekend activity.
Florida Highway Patrol spokesman
Larry Coggins said traffic from the
Gator, Outback and Citrus bowls caused
heavy traffic on roadways throughout
the state this year.
"We had an awful lot of traffic as a
result of the bowl games," he said,
Final state fatality figures were
unavailable Monday, Coggins said.
Locally, FHP reported eight fatalities
in Tampa Bay-area counties during the
New Year's weekend one in Citrus,
one in Sumter, two in Polk, two in Pasco
and two in Hillsborough.
Only the Sumter County fatal crash
happened on an interstate highway,
Coggins said.
In Citrus County, Gregory M.
Benefield, 22, Homosassa, died early
Friday morning when a Plymouth van
struck him as he walked in the inside
lane of U.S. 19 in Homosassa. Benefield
was pronounced dead at the scene.

Citrus County the best school

Himmel's talk had the
intended impact on some vet-
eran teachers.
Vince Treacy, a 17-year
teaching veteran and past
CCEA president, said Himmel
is off to a good start.
"It was upbeat, positive and
honest," he said. "I'm sold on
her as a people person. She has

of this district"
Flaherty agreed, saying he
believes Himmel has the abili-
ty to remove differences that
have long existed between the
teachers and the administra-
tors.
"I appreciate her honesty,"
he said. "We've got to get this
district back together. We've
been apart too long."

on a charge of driving under the

Dominic Joseph DiCola, 55,
1732 Druid Road, Invemess, at 3:06
a.m. Monday on charges of battery
and criminal mischief.
Deputies responded to Griff's Bar
in Invemess in reference to a distur-
bance. Deputies saw DiCola try to
gain entry into the bar through the
front door, according to the arrest
report. A bouncer at the bar told
deputies the business had been
closed for 40 minutes. He said when
he opened the front door to escort a
bartender and another witness out,
DiCola hit him in the face with his
fist. The bouncer said he choked
DiCola to the ground to subdue him.
The bouncer said DiCola was


drinking at the bar earlier in the night
when he threw a drink on a bar-.
tender, according to the arrest
report. The bouncer escorted DiCola
out of the bar. The bouncer said
DiCola was unsteady and tripped
over a concrete parking stop and
lost a tooth. The bouncer showed
deputies damage caused to the front
door when DiCola pulled on it.

N Kerry Eugene Tate, 39, 960
N.E. Eighth Ave., Crystal River, at
3:28 a.m. Monday on a charge of
fleeing/attempting to elude a police
officer.
A deputy saw Tate fail to use his
turn signal when turning onto Eden
Gardens Avenue from State Road
44. The deputy attempted to stop


Tate by activating his emergency
lights, but Tate didn't stop. Tate got
out of the his vehicle and fled to the
front yard of a Wildwood house.
Sumter County Sheriffs deputies
later located Tate.
His bond was set at $5,000.
Burglaries
A burglary was reported at
11:32 p.m. Thursday, between 7:30

Spearing and Wilma Michelle
Benefield he was a lifelong res-
ident of this area.
He was a pipefitter under-
ground with Counts Con-
struction of Ocala. At the age of
16, he was the first to be certi-
fied as a gas fusion welder for
natural gases in the state of
Florida.
He was preceded in death by
his great-grandmother, Wilma
Charlene Buck, and his great
aunt, Dawn Yvonne Adams.
Survivors include his par-
ents, Henry Eugene and Wilma
Michelle Spearing of Homo-
sassa; two brothers, Henry

capped children and many
other charities. She enjoyed
crocheting, especially lap blan-
kets for disabled veterans, and
donated dolls and animals that
she made to children in area
hospitals. She resided at
Surrey Place for the past four
years, where she assisted in
instructing the residents in cro-
cheting and other crafts and
was the president of the Surrey
Place Residents' Council for
the past year.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, Walter C.
Elling, Jan. 23, 2001, and her
brothers, Joseph Pavia,
Romelo Pavia and Roland
Pavia.

Whole story not told
Ms. Day, your most recent letter
published on Dec. 28 in the
Chronicle, asks the question, "where
is the outrage, where is the shame?"
The answer is your continuing
effort to enflame and defame through
misinformation.
The fact that you are a liberal has
not escaped anyone who follows the
editorial pages-of any of the regional
newspapers.
Your chosen attack points this time
to unarmored Humvees, which fol-
lows the equally liberal national
media's attempt to create sensational-
istic commentary with little regard
for the whole story. That is the out-
rage.
Humvees were not designed to be
armored personnel carriers. The
onset of roadside booby-traps not pre-
viously encountered, created the
need for protected vehicles. Due the
nature of their design, the Humvee
could not be fitted with traditional
heavy armor plating. So technology
set about development of an accept-
able alternative armor made of light-
weight ceramics.
Production limitations of a new
technology has been the primary
cause for the slower (than anyone
would have liked) conversion of exist-
ing vehicles. It is just that simple.
If you are so intent on finding fault
with the cause of the military's lack of
readiness and preparedness, why
aren't you raging about the disembow-
elment of the military during the
prior eight years of Democratic occu-
pancy of the White House?
Stop beating the party drum, you
have no credibility here.

Christmas defended
I will fight this attempt to take
Christ out of Christmas. I will fight
the attempt to take Christmas out of
the schools and other places in every-
day life. I will boycott any store or
business that refuse to allow the
Salvation Army to let the bell-ringers

allow the word Christmas to be used.

debate, George Bush commented on ,
moral values. "What distinguishes us
from the terrorists," he said, "is that
we believe that every life is pre-
cious." What he left out was only if f

Cracker Quilters help Hospice

The Cracker Quilters Guild of Citrus
County celebrated the holiday season
with a buffet and. party Dec. 1 at the
Withlacoochee Technical Institute. The
challenge quilt winners were Lori
Wichers and Jessie McLean. Fay
Davison was in charge of the challenge,
which featured a piece of fabric that
had to be used in a pieced or appliqued
quilt form.
Bonnie Saylor, development director
of Hospice of Citrus County Inc., and
Judy Knowlton, manager, were present
to receive 48 lap quilts and 56 bedside
bags for patients. Arleen Koif was the
chairman for this community outreach
project. Millie Mott and Lorraine
Franzmann were also instrumental in
helping with the quilts and bags.
Members of the guild worked on these
quilts and bedside bags during the sum-
mer months.
The drawing for the 2004 raffle quilt
was also held at the holiday party.
Melanie Gray of Crystal River won the
quilt, which was machine pieced and
appliqued by guild members.
The new officers for 2005 are Barbara

committees in the guild. Lois Weighall is

"Cracker Crumbs" newspaper editor.
She takes notes at the business meetings
and then puts the information into a
newsletter that the members can pick up
at the next month's meeting. Durr also
makes a cookbook, featuring recipes
from guild members. The members have
two potluck luncheons each year, and
the recipes from the dishes are then sub-

Cardio rehab patients, staff give back to community

Terri Adams is amazed every
year at the generosity of her
patients in the Cardio-
pulmonary Rehab unit at
Citrus Memorial Hospital.
"Our patients have consistently
donated money to sponsor
Christmas gifts for children
listed with the Family
Resource Center in Citrus
County," she said. "This year
we collected $720, and even
after the deadline for dona-
tions we still had patients try-
ing to give," said Adams,


Clinical Coordinator of Car-
diopulmonary Rehab.
When this time of-year gets
close, Adams said, "patients
begin inquiring if we are going
to keep our 'tradition' and start
collecting for the children. It is
a way for our patients and staff
to help someone who is less
fortunate enjoy the holidays.
"Staff members enjoy shop-
ping for the kids with the
money collected. The Cardio-
pulmonary Rehab unit 'adopt-
ed' five of our own this year,
then helped the Respiratory
Department with their two


children in buying warm
clothes. We were able to buy
everything on these children's
lists and then some," she said.
Why are CMH's Cardiopul-
monary Rehab patients so
loyal to this project? They give
for different reasons. "Most say
it's because their families are
not near, or their grandkids are
grown and this helps them cel-
ebrate Christmas," said Adams.
"They don't want to be named,
but we really want to give them
special recognition, because
they are special and we thank
them."

paper pieced and appliqued with a
Florida theme.
Bobbi McPharlin is serving her sec-
ond year as secretary. She has also
served in other offices and is currently
working as the program chairman for
the Applique Society of Crystal River.
The Cracker Quilters meet from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. the first and third
Wednesday of each month at the First
Baptist Church of Crystal River, 700
Citrus Ave., Crystal River. There is only
one meeting during December for the
holiday party.
All levels of quilters are invited to
attend the meetings. The first meeting
of the month is the business meeting,
and the second meeting of the month is
for workshops, demonstrations and
classes. You may also bring your lunch
and work on your own projects.'
The meeting Wednesday will feature
an installation of officers. On Jan. 19,
Pat Phillips will teach paper piecing
basics to members.
The January meetings are also the
time when membership dues need to
be paid, so that Dianna Hensley, the
membership chairman, can publish
membership lists.

Enjoying two highlights of the holiday season

memories of this holiday
season are the Art
League Cultural Center's
Victorian Tea and the Crystal
River United Methodist
Church's children's Christmas
musical, "Noelle, the First."
For several years, the Art
League's Victorian Tea has
been a highlight of the league's
Christmas Season. It was never
more elegant than this year.
The Chorus of Citrus Hills
entertained. Soloists were Bob
O'Donnell, Carol Franz, Linda
Klosowski, June Nash and
Shirley Perregaux. O'Donnell
sang the perennial favorite
"White Christmas," and the
ensemble set the mood for the
afternoon with "Deck the
Halls." Franz sang "Beautiful
Infant Child" and "It Came
Upon the Midnight Clear."
Nash stirred memories of past
holidays with "What Are You
Doin' New Year's Eve?" Perre-
gaux sang "I Wonder As I
Wander." Vee Balemian was


the group's accompanist on
keyboard.
Gales of laughter were heard
throughout the hall as John
and Linda Klosowski per-
formed "Santa Baby," made
famous by Eartha Kitt
Tea delights included tod-
dies, savory sandwiches, scone
jams, jellies, confections and
teas by Jody Fallabel, a profes-
sional chef of Josephine's
Cuisine. She can be reached at
564-8167.
In addition to the hot rum
and nutmeg eggnog, we en-
joyed high tea sandwiches,
including avocado salad with
sprouts and dates, shaved ham
with cheese ball garnish,
cream cheese and olive, mixed
greens confetti and garnish,
salmon, and egg salad.
Also available were hot hors
d'oeuvres with rosemary gar-
nish.
I especially enjoyed the
scones and crumpets. There
were apricot, strawberry, black
cherry, currant and


Devonshire.
There was a selec-
tion of sugar-free
desserts, as well as
pound cake, pump-
kin cake, mint fruit-
cake, petite cheese
cake, Christmas
cookies, red velvet
cake, marble cake
and the all-American Ruth
favorite, chocolate AROUI

The members
brought gifts for
Citrus United Basket, and it
was announced that Randy
Cunningham had won the
People's Choice Award for his
painting of "Yellow Roses."
Door prizes were awarded
and Anna Sandoval announced
that on Feb. 12 and 13 a profes-
sional opera singer from Italy
will be performing at the
