FEMA says 92 UC residences now in flood zone area
BY TERESA STONE-IRWIN
Times Staff .Writer
At the Jan. 22 Union County
commissioners meeting, board
members discussed the new
new flood insurance rate map,
or FIRM, as produced by
FEMA through the Suwannee
River Water Management
District.
Emergency management
director Doug York notified
board members of a list of 92
Union County residences that
are affected by the new map.
York is in the process of
working with the board to draft
letters to all those affected.
FEMA and the SRWMD have
stated that any resident
affected by the new flood
zones will have the
opportunity to have their
voices heard by their
organizations in a public
meeting. Meetings dates for
concerned citizens are to be
publicized within the next 90
days.
Commissioner Melanie
Clyatt explained that if a
mortgaged structure is located
within the FIRM map,
homeowners will be required
to purchase flood insurance to

Teachers, School-Related Employees of the Year announced
BY TERESA STONE-IRWIN
Times Staff-Writer
The Union County school
district has announced the
names of the winners of the
Teacher of the Year award.
Those teachers are Mandeep
Sharma, math teacher at Union
County ..High School, Brenda
Smithey, language arts teacher
at Lake Butler Middle School
and Celeste Saunders, second-
grade teacher at Lake Butler
Elementary School.
The winner of the district
Teacher of the Year award will
be announced later this week.
Mandeep Sharma
-:UCHS
Mandeep Sharma received
her bachelor's degree in
mathematics and physics as
well as her bachelor's of
education in India. She also
taught math-and science in
India for two years before
coming to Union County High
School as a ninth-12 -grade
math teacher and after-school
tutor.
Former high school principal
Gale Lappalainen saw a video
interview of Sharma and gave
her a call.
"We had a long telephone-
interview and she told.me how
there were math teachers
coming and going at the time
and there was a real need for a
teacher that would provide
stability in the department,"
Sharma said.
Although she's had
opportunities to make more
money teaching in other
districts, Sharma said she is
rather happy where she is and
doesn't want to leave the high
school students
"I can teach all branches of
mathematics without a
problem. I continue to learn
the subject by reading different
Mandeep Sharma
books and doing a lot of
research," Sharma said.
A big collector of quotes,
with over 4,000 in her
collection, Sharma has her
students keep a daily journal in
which they write their opinions
about the chosen quote of the
day.
"This encourages them to
think critically and expand
their horizons," she said.
At the start of each new
school year, Sharma has her
students take home a syllabus
and discipline plan to be
signed by parents. She often
calls on parents to let them
know about their child's
progress in her class and
responds to every message she
receives from parents wanting
to talk to her.
The relaxed atmosphere in
her classroom allows students
to feel comfortable in asking
questions when they need help.
Sharma also makes herself
available to any high school
student who needs extra help
with math.
"I can tutor any student who
needs help each school
morning between 7 and 7:45
a.m.," she said. "They do not
have to be in my class to seek
tutoring."
Brenda Smithey -
LBMS
Lake Butler Middle School's
teacher of the year is Brenda
Smithey. Smithey has been
teaching eighth-grade English
at LBMS for 19 years.
Smithey received her
Bachelor's degree in mass
communications in 1975 and
went on to complete course
work for teacher certification
at the University of Florida in
1989. She is certified to teach
middle school English in
grades 5-9 with an English to
speakers of another language,
or ESOL, endorsement.
. In order to be successful
with her students, Smithey
feels it is imperative that she
have a thorough knowledge of
English, demonstrating
advanced reading and writing
skills.
Smithey keeps herself up-to-
date on young adult literature
and is constantly researching
new strategies to help connect
students to learning.
Her language art students
receive 20 30 minutes of
reading time each school day,
something she said has created
the joy of reading for many.
Smithey finds great reward
in helping reluctant readers to
find a book, a series or an
author that piques their
interest.
An area of study Smithey
has found to create enthusiasm
among students is in the
reading of "The Diary of Anne
Frank" because today's
students can connect with the
story's characters.

Submitted by Clay Abraham,

LBMS
In the Lake Butler Middle
School girl's basketball game
against the Chiefland Braves
earlier this season, the Lady
Tigers took a home court win
with a score of 25-23.
At the end of the first period,
only the Braves had scored,
taking a 6-0 lead over the
Tigers. At the beginning of the
second period, Shakeylia
Griffin scored the first 2 points
basket for the Tigers.
Chiefland answered with
another score of their own,
followed by the Tigers making
the basket, not once, not twice;
but three times in a row, to tie
the score, 10 10 at the half.
In the third, the Tigers
scored a 3-pointer to break the
tie, answered by the Braves
with a 3-pointer of their own,
again tying up the game, 13-
13.
In the fourth period, the
Braves and the Tigers fought
up and down the court. It was
anybody's game up to the end,
but the Tigers ended the game
with a 25-23 win over the
Braves.
Next, the LBMS boys faced
the Braves and gained a 42-24
win.
Kendall Wright scored the
first basket of the game,
followed by Dalton
Southerland and others to
bring the Tigers to a 13-5 lead
over the Braves.
There was an impressive
steal by the Braves in the third,
but the basket was missed.
LBMS scored big, ending the
period 42-12.
At the start of the final
period, the Braves scored three
baskets in a row bringing them
to 18 points.
There was a foul against the
Braves on Jordan Green, but
Green missed both free throws.

two more baskets, their force

Middle School planted a tree
in the school's courtyard.
Many people think that to
plant a tree all you have to do
is dig a hole, stick the tree in
the ground, water it and leave
the rest to nature. Our class
found out that was not actually
the whole story.
When planting a tree, there
is a correct way- a more
scientific way- using
procedures that will greatly
enhance the life expectancy,
survival and general health of

thrives.

Helping each other through
BY TERESA STONE-IRWIN
Times Staff Writer
Even though the weather
was cool, a baseball
tournament was under way at
the high school and a
basketball SMAC
championship game was
taking place at the middle
school, a large crowd showed
up for the second annual
memorial walk for the victims
of the 2006 bus and tractor
trailer accident.
'A number of survivors from
the accident, still showing
signs of emotional wounds that
have not healed, were in the
crowd along with members of
the Mann and Scott families
who lost seven children in the
accident.
As family and friends
waled the path from the Lake
Butlr Elementary School past
Lake Butler Middle School
and ending at Union County
High School, there was
singing, laughter and tears as
those gathered shared happy
memories of Nikki Mann,
Elizabeth Mann, Johnny
Mann, Heaven Mann, Anthony
Lamb, Ashley Keen and
Miranda Finn.
Terry and Barbara Mann
would like to thank everyone
in the community for their
support and a special thank
you to Brian Griffis, youth
director at Fellowship Baptist
Church in Raiford.
"The words he spoke at the
memorial walk touched
everybody's heart and I could
not of said it better," Barbara
said.
Earlier in the day, the Mann
and Scott family members
were able to hold a private
the pain
ceremony at the crash site on
S.R. 121 where they released
balloons into air for each one
of their children who have
been tragically taken from
them.
On the afternoon of Jan. 25,
2006, Alvin Wilkerson, a
semi-truck driver with Crete
Corporation, hit a car occupied
by the seven family members
who were killed, forcing it into
a stopped school bus. Nine
children on the bus including
the bus driver were injured.
Wilkerson's pre-trial court
date is scheduled for April 23.
Mother asks for
road dedication in
her daughter's
memory
Jerri Raymond, the mother
of 5-year-old Brittany Carney
who was struck and killed by
her school bus on Feb. 27,
2007, asked the county
commissioners for their help in
placing a dedication memorial
at the site of the accident in
Raiford.
It was stated that the council
of Raiford must approve such
an action, however, a motion
was made for the county to
give their endorsement of the
memorial marker, which
received unanimous approval.
Commissioner Dobbs said the
county would see what they
could do to help expedite the
process and bring it before the
members of the board in
Raiford.
As of last Friday, Raymond
said she had hoped that this
could be done in time for the
one-year anniversary of the
accident, but she isn't sure
what she can do because the
town of Raiford does not meet
again until after the one-year
anniversary of the accident.

"This continues to be very
exciting for the children,"
Saunders said.
In the field of elementary
education, teachers can remain
professional as they interact
daily with students doing such
things as having a character
dress-up day or walking
backwards on the sidewalk for
everything is backwards day.
Saunders said that when her
peers see the excitement these
small, but significant activities
brings to those involved, it
becomes contagious.
"Sharing ideas that engage
students in the learning process
is what makes the elementary
workplace so enjoyable,"
Saunders said.
Since becoming an educator
more than 20 years ago,
Saunders said she has seen
many changes in the public
school system, such as the
issue of accountability and
rewarding achievements will
continue to produce positive
results.
"Students will push harder if
they know something good is
waiting for them at the end,"
Saunders said.

hole that was 12 inches across
and 24 inches deep. We took
our tree out of the pot and
placed part of the original soil
from the potted tree in the
hole, then placed our tree in
the hole and added back the
soil we displaced by digging
the hole.
Once this was complete, we
made sure there was a small
trench around the diameter of
the tree about four inches from
the trunk. The trench was
soaked with water, thereby
setting -the tree and insuring
that all air bubbles from
digging the hole were released.
If soaking is not done
appropriately, the roots wvil
dry out, thereby increasing tI
chances that a newly planted
tree will die.
This class project was made
possible by cooperation with
the Union County 4-H and
program assistant Colan
Coody, Florida Projedc
Learning Tree and all the
students in Kimberly Shaw's
third period class. This project
although accomplished during
a language arts period, was
especially important to this
class because it integrated
multi-discipline lesson which
incorporated language arts.

commissioner Morris Dobbs.
York said he questioned
FEMA representatives as to
whether they would entertain
historical data if an area never
flooded.
"They said it is not based
upon whether or not you know
it has ever flooded, but based
upon scientific hydrology
studies," York said. In order to
protest FEMA's decision, it
would require proof sound

,was not enough for a victory
over the Tigers, who ended the
Game with a 42-24 win.
Union County triumphs
over Ft. White
On Jan. 15, the Lake Butler
Middle School boys and girls
basketball teams played the Ft.
White Indians on home court.
Both Tigers teams were
victorious with the boy's team
taking a 56-47 lead over the
Indians and the Lady Tigers
winning 19-10.
At the Lady Tigers' game,
both Ft White and Union
County provided excellent
defense during the second
period, only allowing one
score by Lake Butler's
Quaneshia Edwards. The Lady
Tigers had an 8-1 lead at the
half followed by Sarah Gillan
and,-Teyona Jenkirns making
some 'points- for the-Tigers in
the fourth, ending the game in
Lake Butler's favor, 19-10.
Tigers vs. Hurricanes
brings win and loss
In the Lake Butler boys'
basketball game against Ft.
White, Kaleb Green, Antonio
Henderson, Dustin Hersey and
Kendall Wright scored giving
the Tigers an impressive 29-14
lead at the half.
In the third period, the
Tigers went from a lead of 37-
22 to 53-24. The Indians tried
to come back in the fourth by
getting their score up to 33.
The Indians moved the ball,
but they beat by the Tigers'
defense. The final score of the
game left the Tigers victorious
over the Indians, 56-47.
On Jan. 17, the teams faced
Williston. In the girls'
basketball game, the Lady
Tigers were leading at the half
by a score of 14-4. During the
third period, the Hurricanes
tried to get back in the game.
They were able to score, but
the Lady Tigers countered it
by scoring 6 more points. The
fourth period did not bring
much luck for the Hurricanes,
but it did for the Lady Tigers.
Baskets were scored by Sarah
Gillen and Quaneshia Edwards
that would give the Lady
Tigers a huge advantage at 30-
10. The Lady Tigers win
qualified them for the SMAC
Championship game.
The Tigers did not fair so
well in the boys' basketball
game, as the Tigers lost 47-40.
At the end of the first period,
Hurricanes had a 9-7 lead over
the Tigers. During the second,
it was anybody's game as the
scoreboard showed the game
tied at the half, 22-22.
In the third, Kendall Wright
briefly broke the tie for the
Tigers, but by the end of the
third, it was once again tied at
32-32. In the end, the Tigers
were defeated by the
Hurricanes 47-40, thereby
keeping them.pressing on fdt

mortgage on their property.
Commission Ricky Jenkins-
asked how exactly FEMA
came up with their formula.
"I am in the flood zone,"
Jenkins said. "I've lived in the
same area since 1992. In that
same year, we got 11 inches of
rain in 24 hours and it did not
flood, nor did anyone else in
my area, so how can they say
I'm in a flood zone?"
Jenkins said he had intended
to build a home on his property
next to where his mobile hbme
currently sits, and will more
than likely have to mortgage
the home.
"But now I'm looking at not
building a home because I
probably won't be able to get
flood insurance as I think I'm
in one of the high risk areas,"
he said.
"If we do not approve [and
enforcel FEMA's mapping,.
then when the next disaster
comes along, no one in the
county will be eligible for
federal aid," Clyatt said.
Worse than that, York 'said,
was that the mortgage holder
has the right to call the note
due if the mortgagee refuses to
purchase the insurance after
they have been notified to do
so.
Once the notification letters
have been mailed, FEMA will
notify the county of public
meeting dates to be held in
Raiford, Worthington Springs,
Providence and Lake Butler.
This is to take place within the
next 90 days.
If you would like to see
FEMA's flood inurance rate
map, it is posted in the county
building department office.
Citizens may view the map
weekdays between the hours of
8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The building
department is located behind
the O.J. Phillips recreation
park on S.R. 121. They can be

His shows contain.songs from
the 50s and 60s and include
country, folk and ballads,
popular music and new music
he has composed himself. ,
Roger's first appearance in
the spotlight came when he
was five years old and in the
first grade. He was chosen to
represent his class in a talent
show. This humble beginning
sparked the flame of musical
creativity. He received his first
guitar at Christmas when he
was 11 years old-and the rest,
as they say, is entertainment
history.
He won the 1983 National
Music Festival, sponsored by
Dollywood's forerunner, Silver
Dollar City and WIVK in
Knoxville.
Rogers received' a perfect
score in that contest and was
selected for top honors from
more than 2,000 entrants.
He then became a regular
performer at the entertainment
park and is the best-known and
most-loved entertainer at
Dollywood.
Rogers has had a long list of
musical accomplishments
since he first started his career
in 1972. He appeared on the
Grand Ole Opry with country
legends like Hank Snow, Bill
Anderson and Bill Monroe. He
has worked with entertainers
like Alabama, Suzy Bogguss,
Roy Clark, Steve Martin,
Dolly Parton and Ricky
Skaggs..
The concert here will benefit
the Food Pantry, which was
started in 1989 and has helped
many local families through
hard times. There is no public
money for this purpose, the
only source of funding is
through donations from
businesses, .churches,
individuals, an annual "Walk
for Hunger," and this concert
held annually and coming up
in February.

Say no to gas tax hike
The price of gasoline has gone
through the roof, and four of the five
county commissioners are advancing
plans to raise taxes another 6 cents per
gallon? It would be difficult to find a
more inappropriate time to increase
the cost of living over and above
current levels.
The cost of basic food, shelter
and clothing has escalated in recent
months, requiring wage earners and
retirees to forego some essentials and
all luxuries to meet the rising costs
of heating oil, groceries, medicines,
r, ansportation, rent, taxes and
insurance. There are those among us
c having to set priorities, such as buying
food as opposed to buying.medicines,
and the number will increase as the
cost of living continues to rise.
SWhen people can't afford health
'Iinsurance ($900 per month for a
i.yamily), county commissioners should
",just say no" to raising taxes and
p. paving roads.
SThere is a precedent for postponing
'oad, building. In the 1930s Florida
discontinued construction of
-highways because other expenditures
took priority for the limited tax
dollars available. The state had
funded extensive road building in
'the.-1920s and the lime rock industry
:flourished. But the stock market crash
in 1929 heralded the approach of the
devastating Depression that burned
the decade of the 30s into the hearts
and minds of those who lived in or
through those dreary days. The lime
rock industry closed down, putting
hundreds of people out of work in
Marion and adjoining counties.
In a prior Telegraph article it was

We should
take global
warming
seriously
Dear Editor:
Bucking, Gov. Charlie
Crist's environmental
initiatives, global warming,
and the hazards associated
with coal-fired energy, Bill
Phillips,.chief executive officer
of Clay Electric,_ has--fired-
another shot from the January
issue of Clay Electric's
"Kilowatt" newsletter.
Obscuring the science and
affects of global warming,
Phillips, touts studies claiming
coal enables us to "live longer,
more secure and healthier
lives."
Citing a cartoon in which a
caveman, existing with clean
air, water and free-ranging
food, fails to live past 30, he
presumably hopes his amused
readers will conclude that
clean air, water and toxic
pollution don't matter.
Quoting Michael Crichton,
author of "Jurassic Park" and
increase in county revenues,somewhat
higher than the cost of living.
The article supported the county in
recommending that voters not support
the proposed amendment to increase
homestead exemption another $25,000,
but support for commissioners in this
area does not give them license to
continue raising taxes.
It's now time for commissioners to
begin looking at county expenditures
for places to economize, and
postponing the paving of roads is an
excellent place to begin.

fails to see the irony in the fact
that his "expert witness" is a

Carbon dioxide from

walk
Dear Editor:
We would like to say thank
you to the community of
Union County for its support
and presence at this year's
memorial walk for the victims
of the 2006 accident. It is hard
to believe it's been two years
since that terrible day. Some
days are still very long and
others go by fast, but no matter
what, the day of Jan. 25, 2006,
will forever be with each of us.
As a crowd gathered for the
walk at the elementary school,
you could look across and see
the heartbreak that still
surrounds us all. Our children
are still fighting to understand
why or how this happened.
Surrounding them helps calm
the fear in our children each
and every time we come
together as one.
As we headed down the
sidewalk on S.R. 121, there
were tears, laughter and the
singingof "Amazing Grace" to
offer peace as we walked our
path from the elementary
school, past the middle school
to end at the high school. Once
again, our little town came
together, and we cannot ask for
more than that. Please
remember to keep praying for
all of the families who still
have heavy hearts, for I hope
with time, that peace will come
to all.
A special thanks to Sheriff
Jerry Whitehead and his office
for keeping us safe during the
walk. and to the state attorney's
office for providing the
supplies needed for the walk
and memorial service. To the
Mann, Scott, Finn and Keen
families, our prayers are with
you and we love you all.

3 charged
with beating
a man over
money
Three men were charged Jan.
25 after breaking into a
residence on Lakeview Street
in Keystone Heights and
beating up a man who
allegedly owed them money.
Corey Matthew Osborne, 26,
of Hawthorne, Jeramie David
Lowe, 32, of Orange Park and
Adam Anthony Hall, 25, of
' Keysfbne Heights were arrested
by Clay Deputy R.T. Dopp for
assault and battery during
burglary, simple battery and
criminal mischief.
The three were charged with
breaking into a residence at
5:15 a.m. and committing
battery on one of the
occupants. Property was
damaged during the incident,
Deputy Dopp said. After
leaving the residence, the three
returned and threw items at the
glass door and window,
causing the glass to break,
Deputy Dopp said.
A short time after the deputy
arrived, the three again returned
to the residence, but fled when
they saw the deputy. A pursuit
resulted in the apprehension of
Hall and Osborne. Lowe
jumped from the vehicle but
was caught, Deputy Dopp said.
Duval women
face drug
charges in
Union
Two Jacksonville women
were arrested Jan. 24 in Union
County for "one last high."
Deputies responded at 10:13
p.m. to a verbal argument
between two females at the
Kangaroo in Raiford. The
females were sitting in a Jeep
parked in front of the store.
During questioning, a pipe
commonly used to smoke
crack cocaine was seen in the
driver's lap, Deputy David
Shane said. A long tube and
empty bottles with holes in
them were found in the
vehicle. Several pieces of a
white, rock-like substance were
.on the floorboard and in the
center console. The rocks
tested positive for cocaine,
Deputy Shane said.
Valorie Wilson Morkin, 41,
and Angela Denise Clare, 37,
were arrested for possession of
crack cocaine and five counts
of possession of drug
paraphernalia.
Both individuals admitted the
crack and paraphernalia
belonged to them. They stated
they were going to rehab the
following day and just wanted
to get high one last time,
Deputy Shane said.
Morkin was released after a
$2,500 surety bond was
posted.
Clare remained in custody
under a $2,500 bond.
Car strikes
pedestrian,
two charged
Two men were charged last
week after one was struck by a
vehicle during an ongoing
dispute.
Maurice Jamar Strong, 28,
of Raiford was charged Jan. 22
by Patrolman Clint Lockhart
with striking Albert James
Simmons Jr. with his vehicle.
According to witnesses,
Simmons stopped his vehicle
at 10:30 a.m. on Old Lawtey
Road and attempted to block
the roadway for Strong.
Strong stated he saw
Simmons exit his vehicle with
a gun and feared for his life,
according to Patrolman
Lockhart. A long black pipe
was found at the scene,
Patrolman Lockhart said.
After striking Simmons,
Strong left the scene but was
later located.
Simmons was transported to
Shands Gainesville where he
was treated for possible
injuries, Patrolman Lockhart
said.
Earlier, police were called to
Delta Food where Strong and
Simmons were involved in a
verbal altercation. Simmons,
22, of Starke was charged with
criminal mischief after he
kicked the door of Strong's
, .. .
vehicle, leaving a dent,
Patrolman Lockhart said.
Strong was charged with
aggravated battery. He was
released on Jan. 23 on his own
recognizance.
Starke couple
charged with
battery
Thomas Jerome Green, 41,
and Karen Janelle Gant, 28,
both of Starke were arrested
Jan. 26. by Starke Patrolman
Clint Lockhart for domestic
battery. Gant was charged with
grabbing Green during an
altercation causing a minor
laceration, Patrolman Lockhart
said. Green was charged with
pushing Gant into a wall,
Patrolman Lockhart said. Bond
was set at $1,000.
Gant was released from
custody after a $1,000 surety
bond was posted.
Lawtey man
charged with
killing bear
A 52-year-old Lawtey man
was charged last week with
taking a threatened species, a
third-degree felony.
The investigation began Jan.
9 when Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation
Commission Investigator Lt.
David Lee received information
about a bear being shot on a
hunting lease outside of
SHawthorne. The next day, Lee
and Lt. Ben Allen went to the
hunting lease, which is in
Putnam County on C.R. 21.
No one was at the camp.
On Jan. 19, the suspect was
seen at the camp and the
officers returned to interview
him and two men with him.
One man admitted he knew,
the bear had been taken, buti
said he did not shoot the bear,
Lt. Lee said. The man also told
Lee he had some bear meat in
his freezer at his home in Lee
County.
Lee then spoke with Glen
Earl Wilkerson, who admitted
he shot the 400-pound male
bear. Wilkerson took Lee to
where he shot and butchered
the bear. The bear's rib cage
and other parts were still on
the ground, Lee said.
The investigator seized the
hide, skull, paws and some of
the meat form the suspect's
home in Lawtey. The rifle used
in the illegal take, a Ruger
.270, was seized.
"This case came together
because of the cooperation
among residents concerned
about poaching and the
concerted efforts of FWC
investigators and patrol
officers," Capt. Martin
Redmond, investigations
supervisor, said.
Anyone with information
about fish and wildlife law
violations is encouraged to call
the Wildlife Alert Reward
Program at (888)-404-3922 or
report the incident online at
MyFWC.com.
Callers reporting potential
violators may remain
anonymous and will not be
required to testify in court. If
their information leads to an
arrest, they can receive a reward
of up to $1,000.

stealing a purse from an
employee of the Blood Mobile.
Linnie Hartley Shepherd, 42,
removed the purse from the
unit. that was parked in the
Wal-Mart parking lot,
according to patrolmen Clint
Lockhart and Michelle Davis.
Shepherd then used a check
from the purse to purchase a
$350 gift card from Wal-Mart.
Using the gift card, she
purchased groceries valued at
$36.42, Patrolman Lockhart
said.
Shepherd was charged with
petit theft, felony uttering a
forged instrument and felony
forgery.
The purse was found in a
garbage can. Shepherd admitted
to the theft.

defective vehicle equipment,
troopers will concentrate their
efforts on vehicles being
operated with defects such as
bad brakes, worn tires and
defective lighting equipment.
In addition, attention will be
directed toward drivers who

New Bradford Co. Library
offers a wealth of materials
BY ARNIE HARRIS
Telegraph Staff Writer
The new Bradford County
Library, which opened on Oct.
29, offers a veritable
cornucopia of riches for
young, old and everybody in
between.
What impresses the visitor
initially upon entering the
modern facility is how airy and
spacious the high-ceilinged
building is. In daytime it is
well-lit, not only by electricity,
but by the daylight pouring
through 21 large windows that
ring the library at the junctiori
of the walls and ceiling.
Giving some idea of the new
library's size is the fact that the
children's section alone is
about the same size as the
entire old library on Jackson
Street (the old children's
section had only one table-
now it has seven with a pair of
computers on two of them).
The greatly increased room
has permitted the
establishment of a young adult
section, which the old library
simply lacked the space for.
Eight comfortable chairs
provide readers with places to
sit and quietly spend hours
reading an interesting book or
studying, if they so choose. In
addition, there are five large
tables with four chairs at each,
as well as a study carrel with
four chairs.

published books, then one

Books (up to a limit of 25)
cans be borrowed for a period
of three weeks; a maximum of
five DVD and 10 VHS tapes
can be taken out also for three
weeks.
Computers
Thanks to the enlarged
facility, the library is able to
accommodate an average of
109 computer users a day, as
compared to 34 at the old
library, according to statistics
provided by Library Director
Phalbe Henriksen.
If you want to use a
computer, you may get on one
for at least one hour (or more
if no one else is waiting for a
computer at the time).
There are eight computers
available for the use of adults
and young adults.
The procedure for getting a
computer to work on is to sign
a waiting sheet. Depending on
the number of people on the
computers at the time, there
may be no wait, a wait of
perhaps 10 minutes or a half-
hour. Everyone requesting a
computer must present a
picture ID.
Henriksen said the best time
to come to the library for a
computer and avoid a long
wait would be anytime before
the public schools let out.
For teenage students, there is
a separate section containing
six computers. For all but one
of them, the maximum time on
the computer is 30 minutes (or
more if no one else is waiting).
For youngsters, there are
four computers in the
children's section of the
library.
Both the teen and children's
sections are supervised by
library staff who help the
young people with any
difficulties they may be having
on the computers.
Henriksen said that
beginning in March, the library
will be offering free-of-charge
computer classes for all ages
and ability levels, from
beginner to intermediate to
advanced.
A special feature of the
children's section is the
dedicated story room, where
every Tuesday and Thursday
mornings at 10 a.m., stories are
read to young children by staff
members Ethel White and Lora.
Barger. The Tuesday morning
story session is for
preschoolers, while the
Thursday morning session is
tailored for even younger
toddlers.
Henriksen said the Bradford
County Library, like all
libraries is "a work in
progress."
"This library will look
different a month from now,
just as it will a year from now,
five years, 10 or 20 years from
now," Henriksen said.
As an example, she
mentioned a large Indian canoe
that was discovered in Crosby
Lake in 2000 and which in the
future will be mounted on a
wall high above patron's
heads.
"We also hope to have mural
paintings within a few months,
but that depends on the
revenue situation after the
property tax vote in a couple of
weeks," Henriksen said.
Henriksen also said a
butterfly and hummingbird
garden will be constructed
outside the library's south wall
sometime within the next few
months.
Another feature, said
Henriksen, are meeting rooms
thatcan be reserved by any
groups or organizations
interested in utilizing them.
One such group, the
Sunshine Quilters, which
welcomes all levels of quilters,
is currently meeting at the
library on the first Friday of
each month from 9 a.m. to
noon.
Henriken said her hope is
that those who become
proficient at the craft, will in
turn become instructors for
others.

The Keystone Heights boys' soccer team celebrates its upset victory over Pierson
Taylor for the District 5-3A championship. It was the fourth championship for
Keystone in the past five seasons. Keystone will host Umatilla in a regional
quarterfinal match tonight, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m.
Keystone boys knock off
top seed for championship
BY CLIFF SMELLEY
STelegraph Staff Writer
A young team that took its
lumps during the regular
season against district
competition grew up last week
when the Keystone Heights
boys' .soccer team won the
District 5-3A championship
with a 1-0 upset of top seed
Pierson, Taylor on Jan. 25 in
Keystone.
It was the sixth straight year
the Indians (11-11-2) played
for the district championship
and the second time in the past
three years they've won it. The
Indians will host Umatilla (13-
7-4) in a regional quarterfinal
match tonight, Jan. 31, at 7
p.m.
SIt was quite a feat for a team
that plays three freshmen and
six sophomores, yet now that
the Indians have accomplished
it, it will only lead to future
success, 'the team's head
coach, Trevor Waters, said.
"When you win a
championship, you know
success," Waters said. "It's
going to turn. their whole
careers around.
Two of the team's
sophomores set, up the only
goal of the match, which was
scored' by one of the team's
few seniors. Justin Hannah
sent a cross to Austin Groves,
who then touched the ball to
senior captain Ryan Miller.
Miller moved around the
outside right defender and sent
a shot into the left side of the
net two minutes into the
second half.
"It was a beautiful shot,"
Waters said. "(Jos6 Jiminez) is
a great keeper. He hasn't given
up but maybe 12 goals all
year." .
The rest of the match, like
the entire first half, centered on
both teams' defenses. Taylor
continuously pushed the ball
past midfield to just outside
the 18-yard mark in the last 15
minutes, only to be turned
away time and again by
Keystone.
Keystone changed up its
defensive lineup prior to the
Christmas break, with those
changes paying off. Waters
said two of the major changes
were moving senior. Brad
Gober back to sweeper. and
moving sophomore Darby
Johns up to the stopper
position.
Greg Oakley, who played
for the team in the past, but
who did not play last year,,
returned this season to'provide
some needed senior leadership,
Waters said.

Another key defensive
switch was moving the team's
only junior-Justin Hedding-
into the goal. Hedding has
played the position before, but
not at the high school level.
The move, though, has paid
off.
"He's just a natural," Waters
said. "He's awesome."
Keystone was the third seed
in the tournament, compiling
just a 2-4 district record. Two
of those losses came against
Taylor by scores of 3-0 and 4-
1.
Waters said he believed the
second half of the Indians'

Keystone, despite getting a
triple-double from Matt

the tournament's third seed.
The Indians held a five-point

Keystone's Russell to play for former coach at St. Johns
BY CLIFF SMELLEY

She didn't believe she had a
chance, but her former coach
did.
Therefore, when Keystone
Heights senior volleyball
player Kim Russell accepted a
scholarship offer from St.
Johns River Community
College in Palatka, that former
coach, who will now be her
collegiate coach, said, "I told
you so."
"Honestly, I didn't think I
would have a chance to play
volleyball in college," Russell
said.
Yet she said former
Keystone head coach Scott
Conkling kept telling her she
could. Now, she gets to play
for Conkling, who is now the
St. Johns head coach, again.
"Now that I'm going to play
for him again, it's exciting,"
Russell said. "I'm really
blessed to have this
opportunity."
Conkling, likewise, is
looking forward to having
Russell back on his team.

Tailor," Waters said.
STaylor (14-3-1) travels to
Ocala to play Trinity Catholic
(6-17-2) in a regional
quarterfinal match. If Keystone
defeats Umatilla, it will host
the winner of that match on
Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m.
The Indians' defeat of
Taylor was important in two
ways. One, it allowed the
Indians to stay home for a
quarterfinal match. Two, it
gave the team its 11t' win,
which serves as a tribute to
former teammate Maurice
Godau. Godau was an
exchange student who had to
return to his home in Germany.
Therefore, he did not get to
finish out the season with the
Indians, but the players have
not forgotten him.
"Maurice's number was 11,
so we wanted to get that 11lh
win for Maurice," Waters said.
Keystone advanced to the
district championship match
by defeating Crescent City 3-1
in the district semifinals on
Jan. 22. Godau played in that
match, recording an assist on a
goal by Miller.
Miller's goal came
approximately three minutes
into the second half, with
Keystone already leading 1-0.
Miller assisted on the team's
first goal, which was scored by
Gober in the 24th minute.
That' was the first of two
goals by Gober. The second
came off of a penalty kick in
the 65"h minute.

a 53-45 loss to Class 4A
Ridgcview on Jan. 24 in
Orange Park. Heather Martin
led the team with 16 points and
eight rebounds.
On Jan. 22, Keystone got 23
points from Poupard in a 55-22
win over visiting Newberry on
Jan. 22. Poupard was 10-of-11
from the field while also
grabbing six rebounds and
coming away with three steals.
Jordyn Davis and Kim
Russell each scored eight
points, with Davis also pulling
down a team-high eight
rebounds.
Smoak had five assists.
Keystone now heads into the
District 6-3A tournament off
of two straight losses, but the
Indians have won seven
straight games against district
opponents after opening
district play with a loss to
Union County on Nov. 30.
Union and Keystone each
finished with 7-1 district
records, but Union is the
tournament's number-one
seed, which was determined by
a coin flip.
The tournament, which is
being hosted by Interlachen
High School, began this past
Tuesday with a quarterfinal
game between fourth seed
Interlachen and fifth seed
Pierson Taylor. It resumes
Friday, Feb. 1, when second
seed Keystone plays third seed
Crescent City at 6 p.m. That
will be followed by Union
playing either Interlachen or
Taylor at 8 p.m.
The semifinal winners will
play for the championship on
Saturday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m.
So much to do, so little
done, such things to
be.
