Lottery scam
The holiday season is in full
swing, and the Washington
County Sheriff's Office is get-
ting a record number of reports
of advanced fee frauds or lottery
scams as they are commonly
referred to. Local residents have
recently lost thousands of dollars
in such scams and many more
have reported being approached
by these companies, according to
a news release.
Please keep in mind that
people who scam do not take a
break, especially in the case of
the elderly. It is \ery easy to fall
for these scams simply because
scammers are professionals at
making these lotteries look le-
gitimate. Please remember the
following when dealing with
advanced fee frauds:
*Any lottery requesting you to
pay them money should be cause
for suspicion.
*You will never pay any up-.
front costs if you win a lottery,
ever.
*There is no such thing as a
random email lottery.
*It is against the law for any-'
one to make use of your email
address without your permission
and no legitimate business will
ever do it.
*If you receive a suspicious
letter or check from any conm-.
pany asking for you to send,
them money you can contact the
Washington County Sheriff's Of-
fice at 1850) 638-6111.
Sheriff Bobby Haddock said,
'The best way to avoid the dev-
astation these scams is by being
suspicious of anyone promising
something that seems too good
to be true." If you feel you are a
victim of a. scam or have would
like to report suspicious activity.

Incentive pay for teachers has
been a hot topic throughout Flor-
ida education for the past sev-
eral years. At a called meeting
on November 21 following the
swearing in of new members and
the reorganization of the Wash-
ington County School Board, the
subject came up again locally.
At issue was a plan the school
district was required to produce.
Special Teachers Are Rewarded
(STAR) provides a formula
based on a combination of
improvement in academic per-
formance of special education
students, mostly measured by
FCAT (50 percent of the evalua-
tion) and an appraisal form done
by school principals (50 percent
of the grade) to reward teachers
and guidance counselors for im-
proved performance with a five
percent bonus.
The plan would affect special
education teachers at county
schools, Dozier I and II, and
Okochobee (which are adminis-
tered by the school district. Par-
ticipation is voluntary.
The performance appraisal to
be used by principals to measure
teachers has 72 elements, inc.lud-
ing everything from maintaining
a clean working environment
(No. 12), to developing "rou-
tines and efficient techniques for
minimizing time required for ad-
ministrative and organizational
activities" (No. 20), to using "a
variety of instructional strategies
appropriate for teaching students
from diverse backgrounds with
different learning styles and spe-
cial needs" (No. 38).
Board members and Super-
intendent Calvin Stevenson un-
derstood that it was necessary to
submit a plan to the state Depart-
ment of Education by December
12, with final approval due by
March 2007.
They also noted that such a
plan was very difficult to put
together, and that staff members
who designed the plan did the
best they could under the cir-
cumstances.
"Is it perfect? No way," said
Stevenson.
Members were clearly not
happy about having the problem
dumped on the district staff.
"It's a great idea from the
Legislature but the Legislature
is not willing to throw down a
form," said Board Chairman
Vann Brock.
Other concerns expressed in-
cluded the pressure it could put
on relationships between princi-
pals and the teachers they have
to evaluate.
The plan received "tentative
approval" from the teachers'
union, Stevenson said.
The Board approved sending
the plan to DOE.
The Board also approved pay
increase for Board members
based on the state formula. New
Board Member Susan Roberts
voted against the increase.

The impact drove Boston's vehicle through a chain-
link fence and up against a house across the street at
748 Orange Street. Boston and her passengers, Felisha
Cashay Massalinfe and Taquavion L. Keith, were taken to
Northwest Florida Community Hspital for treatment.

Here we are int 'De-
cember already. Country
|;, singer Willie Nelson's
-' statement in song is:, "Gee,
ain't it funny how time
slips away?" My question
is: How did the first eleven
months of this year slip by
so fast?
This time of the year
reminds me of some of
the stories contained in
the Heritage Book. Corn
shuck brooms, rolling
stores, picking cotton, re-
cycling sacks, sweeping
, yards, syrup making, pick-
. ing wild flowers, wash day,
dressing a chicken for Sun-
day dinner plus many oth-
Eh ers, were included in the
-, book. Whit Gainey. along,
with his sister, Linda Gain-
ey Smock, were among the
r; more prolific writers on
These topics.
One subject that did
I not get addressed is one
that has been on my mind
lately. I guess it is because
colder weather has set in
already. which truly is my.
S:favorite'time of the year.,
S The topic of breakfast
at our house w ith the large
family, and usually some
Sfarm hands, and visitors
: t every meal, has been
bearing deeply into 'the
recesses of my old brain.
Specifically, the, memory
of squirrel for breakfast
is predominately in my
thoughts today.
Breakfast surely must
have been the most entic-
ing meal that our mother
placed on the table. In
c the dead of winter, fresh
t squirrel at breakfast time
was something we knew
we would see periodically
'on our table. We did not
have the little animal of
the rodent family every
day but it was an item on
"the breakfast menu often
enough for me to relate it
to cold weather.,
Maybe it is brought to
my mind because of the
squirrels that presently run
freely in our yard. hogging
up the bird feed and being
a general nuisance.
Our squirrels seemingly
have no fear of man or
beast. Their dreaded eri-
emy. cats. are not present
at our house. No one in
the neighborhood seems
inclined to shoot squir-
rels just because they are
a pest.
In my younger days. it

.was a quarter of a mile
to the Cook Mill Pond
swamp from our home. I
don't recall ever having
seen a squirrel in our yard,.
even though we had 21
bearing pecan trees. They
stayed strictly in hiding
and obviously regarded
every human being as their
arch enemy.
Cats, dogs and other
animals and fowl ran ram-
pant on our farm and squir-
rels would not have had a
chance of surviixal.
Squirrel hunting was,
a common sport among,
the young and the adults.
A squirrel hunt required
being in the swamp or
han mmock just as the: sun
was rising which was the'
squirrel's feeding time.
A .22 caliber rifle was
the weapon used for. squir-
rel hunting. Careful aim
to the head in order not
;to '"tear up' the meat" was
the warning the grown-ups
gave to the younger set.
Squinels in Cook's Mill
Pond were instinctively
: wild 'and knew how, to
conceal themselves from'
the hunter. Total quietness
,,as required while the
person seeking the squilrlel
positioned himself behind
a tree, waiting for the
small animal to make the,
,first move. Eventually, he
would make their mistake
of sticking his head out
and the rifle would "crack"'
with the, "sharp shooter"
suially bageing his, first
"'catch of the day."
My dad made the trek'
to the hunting grounds
dressed in overalls anid-
an overall jumper with-
large pockets.- He had the
patience to \\ait for the
squirrel's movement and
he rarely missed his shot.
He enjo ed annoutncingl
that he expended five
rifle cartridges and brought
back five. OIHNS, tender-
squirrels. .'"" ''
As he arri ed home,.
he had his sharp pocket
knife out and immediately
started pulling the squirrels
from his jumper pockets.
skinning them hurriedly.
Manma alreadN had the
wood-burning stove fired
up and read\ for daddN to
bring the dressed squirrels
to the kitchen.
She had a skillet with
a small amount of 'lard
on the sto1e getting hot. I

A typical squirrel fattening himself for the kill as he

think the weight of four
or five squirrels could be
ineasured in ounces or'
ma be even in grams..
Mlama's method of
cooking was to salt. pepper"
and flour the small morsels
of meat and proceed to fry
it in the hot lard. When

they were browned, she
added more flour and water
to make a delightful gravy
after a few more minutes
of smotherr frying" the
delicacy. ;
While all this was hap-,
pening. homemade biscuits
were baking in the oven.

and enough rice to feed the
multitudes was fast getting
ready to receive a small
serving of squirrel with a
liberal supply of gravy.
A platter of eggs fried
to "well done" would be
waiting for the whetted
appetites. Fresh churned
butter was already on the
table along with home-
made cane syrup, plus
at least one or more jars
filled with pears,, peaches
or fig preserves. Hot coffee
with its wonderful aroma
was waiting for the adults
while the young 'uns were'
served fresh nilk.
Mama's breakfast table
also contained some "fried
meat",- ham and sausage
- for the finicky eaters,
In recent mornings, I
have observed the carefree
squirrels running play-
fully all around our home
and thought of days gone
by and what easy picking
they would be for a quick
kill and ending up on the

breakfast table for a de-
lightful winter breakfast. In
reality, I think our squirrels
feel a haven of safety, as
they must sense that fried
squirrel meat, southern
style, is not .Hester's idea
of breakfast. I imagine she
will stick with Raisin Bran
mixed with other cereal
and fortified with apple.
banana or blueberries.
Perry will insist upon his
eggs, grits and bacon, with
toast generously spread
with some of the jellies
and jams that have been
coming our way lately.
Honey is also in the
cupboard purchased from
Maphis Farms near Falling
Waters,State Park.
In the meantime, the
squirrels at our place are
still having a heyday. steal-
ing the birds' food, drink
ing from the birds' water
fountain, and cluttering the
driveway with the pulver
ized pine cones as they
eat the seeds, prematurely,.
from the cone.
The main threat to the
squirrel is the busy High
way 277 in front of our
home. It has a high carnage
rate as the animal kingdom
fails to heed the warning.
"look both ways before
crossing."
See you-all next week.

and can't\ do. When did we sell the Sunny Hills Fire Department and
its property to Glen Zanetic, and what authority has he to tell anyone
not to use anything that belongs to the people of this community. When
Glen Zanetic can showsa paid deed and a clear title to this property
then, and only then, I will not step foot on this property. And why is he
involving the county in a matter that is strictly a community matter, or
is it that Glen Zanetic is discriminating against me. What will he tell
the rest of the community when they can go out or they can't go out.
We, the people of this community, pay this man's salary. He works for
us, we don't work for him.
Sincerely,
Salvatore Zurica

Transit of Mercury
The sixth grade science classes at Vernon Middle
School were treated to something few of us have
ever seen, the transit of Mercury. Mercury passed
between Earth and the sun on Nov. 8, and was vis-
ible for about four hours. You had to know what you
were looking for because Mercury is so small, a little
larger than Earth's moon, that it appeared as a tiny
dot through the telescope. The image of the Sun was
projected on a piece of paper. One should never look
directly at the sun. Students also could see a sunspot
on the surface of the sun.

be on the lookout for a new
scam targeting gift cards.'
BBBs across the U.S.
are receiving reports that
scammers are writing
down the merchant name

card has been activated.
Once the thief confirms
a card has been acti\ ated.

recipient of the card at-
tempts to use it (after they

If possible, businesses
offering gift cards should

Blankets of Love
Blankets of Love is an outreach ministry to the chil-
dren of Bay, Holmes and Washington counties.
Blankets :of Love strives to provide each child that
has to be removed from their home, due to negligence
or abuse with a homemade (or very nice store bought)
blanket and a comforting stuffed animal friend. The time
of removal can be nothing but traumatic for a child, they
need security and to know someone cares. They need
hope.
Many children have already been provided with com-
forting blankets and stuffed animals over this past year.
Through an abundance of giving, they have also been
able to supply blankets to nursing homes and hospice
care. "We have "gotten the ball rolling" in the right
direction, but we still need the assistance of volunteers.
We must continue this effort as the children are still out
there and need to know they are loved," explained a
spokesperson. "In 2007 we are hoping to expand to reach
Jackson and Walton counties. Please consider helping us
in these efforts."
Volunteers who are willing to sew, crochet, knit, and
to help to supply a large demand for these blankets and
afghans are needed. Blankets of Love is not soliciting
funds, but donations of supplies such as yarn and fabric
are welcome. Blankets size should be at least 4' x 4', call
850-773-9364 for more information.
