Night of political changes in Washington County

JAY FELSBERG
Managing Editor
Political changes swept Wash-
ington County Tuesday night (or
to be precise, Wednesday morn-
ing) as two incumbent county
commissioners were unseated
and a'new School Board member
was elected.
Veteran Democratic Commis-
sioners Lynn Cope and Lenzy
Corbin lost their bids for re-
election. Cope was defeated in
District 2 by Republican Joel
Pate unofficialll) 3,902-3,221.
Corbin in District 4 was defeated
by Republican Eddy Holman
4,088 to 3,051.
Susan Roberts won the non-
partisan runoff for School Board
by defeating Margaret Gilm-
ore 4,000-3,005. Roberts was
top vote getter in September's
School Board election, but did
not have 50 percent plus one to
win the District 5 seat outright.

sults included:

Kiwanis Club hears
about Teen Court
Representatives of Teen Court
in Chipley spoke to the Kiwanis
Club Tuesday to explain what
Teen Court is all about, which is
an alternative to the court system
of Florida.
A teen in legal trouble who
has no previous record, if recom-

mended by the State Attorney's
office, can go through the Teen
Court process instead of legal
court procedures. About 75 teens
a year complete the required pro-
cess of interviews, meetings and
community service.
One of the main disciplines
learned during this process is
respect for authority. Teen Court
is funded by donations and the
Washington County Commis-
sioners and has a recent success
rate of about 85 percent.

As shown here, the robber
pulled out a black semi-auto-
matic handgun and forced the
teller to hand over an undis-
closed amount of cash.

Computer glitch

delays results

JAY FELSBERG
Managing Editor
Everyone dreads a computer
.glitch. A glitch can be anything
from the Internet dropping out
as you are trying to download
data, to a computer crash when
a harried reporter is just finish-
ing an 800-word article he forgot
to save. A glitch is particularly
dreaded because someone usu-
ally doesn't know what causes it
to happen.
A case in point came Tuesday
night as the staff of the Washing.
ton County Supervisor of Elec-
tions office. was downloading
data from memory packs from
voting machines used in the
Washington Count\ elections
beginning just after 7 p.m. when
the polls closed.
Supervisor Carol Finch Grif
fin said that.ever thing went fine

built two airplanes, one for
distance and one for flight

rocket from paper, using
different kinds and sizes
of wings. These rockets
would be launched using
straws and a lot of hot air.

Over 300 students long activities, throwing
participated in the day- airplanes. measuring the

distance thrown and how

I've been campaigning for this seat since early March and it
seems almost bitter sweet that the trail ends now. The real task
,ahead, however, is serving you from the District Five seat on the
Washingron Co. School Board. This is the most important goal
and my focus for the next four years.
To my campaign contributors, who gave of themselves in
various capacities, you made "wearingyour green" an amazing
experience. You did your part through campaign donations, wav-
ing signs on street corners (even in the rain), making calls, passing
out flyers, telling people about me, etc. Your efforts, from day one,
.helped to ensure this was a success.
To my friends, who were with me every step of the way, I
say thank you! You kept me going and optimistic when the days
seemed to never end.
To my family, I've never been more proud! You never stopped
supporting, encouraging and believing in me and I love you! I
thank o.u for the tireless hours spent on my behalf, bothjiear and
far, and in different ways. I share this win with you!

To Margaret and Dow Gilmore, I thank you Ibi a positive

"Our deputies as well as in-

With every drug dealer we re-

that much closer to eliminat-

Bobby Haddock. "There is
nothing more threatening to
our community than illegal
drugs and nothing higher
on our prio. ity list than its

Sisters, Cozetta Register, 12, and Katie Register, 11,
spend some time together at the KMS Fall Festival.

Face painting is popular at any fair or festival.

Enjoying their chicken dressing dinner in the KMS
cafeteria are Felicia O'Neal, Cierra Mack and Donna
''Neal.

Youngsters display the fruits of their festival shopping
- the big froggy eyeglasses and their pastel fedoras.

Mia Wright is happy to spend some time with her dad,
Billy Wright.

Sweet finger foods like cookies, brownies and little
muffins were available from an indoor booth.

The Toilet Bowl Toss seems to be a new game of skill. Customners were given three
rolls of toilet tissue to throw into the gaping hole for a prize. B.J. Alderman, left,
Alyson Brown and Julie Young handed out the rolls and prizes.

Pizza, hamburgers and
other festival foods were
enjoyed at tables on the
newly landscaped front
lawn at Kate M. Smith El-
ementary School Monday
night at the Fall Festival.
Chipley Fire and Rescue
personnel cooked the
'burgers :on a grill placed
in the side parking lot. Ev-
eryone from teachers and
parents, public servants to
political hopefuls pitched
in to make the annual event
successful.
The. school's famous
chicken dressing dinner
was served in the cafete-
ria for $5 per plate and a
long line of hungry people
stretched across the front
of the room onto the out-
door sidewalk. The meal,
also served as take out, in-
cluded dressing with dark
brown gravy, a vegetable,
cranberry sauce, sliced
peaches, and a big hot
yeast roll.
Tickets, four for a dollar,
were used to pay for the
finger foods sold outdoors,
games, contests and neon
jewelry. Kids could use a
couple of tickets for the
duck pond, bean bag toss
or face painting while a
necklace with a colorful
sparkling ball on the end
sold for $1.50, as did some
of the neon rings and toys.
Chris Ellis brought
a young alligator to the
festival. The animal had
its mouth taped for safety
and Ellis held it with both
hands, one at the head
the other at the tail, so
kids could pet and pat the
reptile's scaly hide. Pat
Salter sat at the table with
Ellis. She offered each
child a squirt of liquid
hand sanitizer after he/she
had touched the alligator
and gave each a little green
beanie tov shaped like the

over when Salter joined
her family for a walk
around the grounds.
Sanitary methods were
also carried out in the face
painting, with the painter
using a separate Q-tip for
each child. The pile of
used cotton-tipped sticks
rose pretty high as' the
night wore on.
At the Toilet Bowl toss,
kids were given three rolls
of toilet paper to toss into
a toilet bowl for a prize.
The bowl's opening is
pretty big and few missed
all three tries. However,
one youngster didn't un-
derstand the game and
kept throwing hard. He hit
the wall behind the bowl
a couple of times until
B.D. Alderman quietly ex-
plained what he was sup-
posed to do. Alyson Brown
and Julie Young helped
with this contest.
Over at the Go Fishing
game, a youngster tried
to use his long cane pole
like a fly fishing rod and
got it tangled with one of
the others. The teacher
distributing the poles had
to have the help of the one
behind the fence pinning
on the prizes to straighten
the lines.

Kids paid valuable tick-
ets to ride in a long metal
cart pulled by a tractor.
They lined the benches
on either side of the cart
and sat of the floor as they
waved goodbye to parents
and friends.
There was a Wheel of
Fortune, cake walks, three
moon walks, ring, toss,
buried treasurer and other
booths with prizes galore.
Some kids wore big
green-rimmed eye glasses,
that made them look some-
thing like a frog, with blue,
green, or pink fedoras.
The flashing neon jewelry
necklace just added to the
fun. Everyone playing the
games won prizes. Just
before 5 p.m. when the
parking lot was filling up a
few splatters of rain dotted
windshields but it didn't
last, and the expected cool
weather failed to material-
ize.

Chipley continues crackdown on 911 numbers

The Cit) of Chipley is
continuing to crackdown
on failure to have 911 ad-
dresses on display.
Codes Enforcement Of-
ficer Jim Lassiter said his
office received a number
of complaints from city
workers and emergency
personnel about not being
able to find locations due
to a lack of 911 addresses
on display. The City is act-
ing under Section 16-85 of
the City codes.
Firefighters. police, city
workers, EMTs, and others
are taking down locations
of buildings where 911
numbers are not on display,
either on curbs, mailboxes
or on the buildings. Num-
bers on a building must be
at least three inches high

and not be the same color
as the building.
Once it is established
that 911 numbers are not
properly displayed. Las-
siter will send a certified
letter giving the property
owner 14 days to comply.
Failure to comply will
result in a civil infraction
punished according to Sec-
tion .11-15 of City codes:
*First, infraction: Civil
penalty of $50.
*Second infraction: Civil
penalty of $150.
*Third infraction: Civil
penalty of $250.
Failure to pay the civil
penalty, to request a hear-
ing in the time allowed,
failure to appear iA court
to contest a citation when
a hearing has been re-

quested, or failure to ap-
pear in court as may be
required, means that the
defendant has waived their
right to contest the cita-
tion. A judgement may be
entered against the person
for $500.
.If a defendant is ordered
to appear before the court
to explain why action on
the citation has not been
cleared and does not ap-
pear, then the defendant
could be held in contempt
of court.
Anyone who willfully.
refuses to sign and accept
a citation issued by the
codes enforcement officer
shall be guilty of a second-
degree-misdemeanor.
For more information,
call Lassiter at 638-6318.
