Chipley gets

$412,000

state grant
Governor Jeb Bush recently
awarded the City of Chipley a
Rural Infrastructure Fund Grant
of $412,000 to help retain nearly
400 jobs and create 56 new jobs.
The grant will be used for
infrastructure and wastewa-
ter upgrades at the Highway
77 and 1-10 interchange lift
station. Supporting the retention
and expansion of several busi-
nesses, the upgrades will also
facilitate more than $5.6 million
in new capital improvements in
rural Washington County.
"I am pleased the State can
once again support Chipley in its
ongoing economic development
efforts through this rural infra-
structure grant," said Governor
Bush. "Through this strategic
fund, Chipley will make impor.
tant infrastructure improvements.
enabling job retention and future
economic growth."
The City of Chipley worked
with the Governor's Office of
Tourism, Trade, and Economic
Development and Enterprise
Florida to successfully secure
this grant.
Created in 1996 and over
seen by the Executive Office of
the Governor.'the Rural Infra
structure Fund Grant program
helps rural communities make
improvements necessary to in-
crease economic development in
their regions.
"I want to thank the Governor
and his Office for assisting us
with funding from the Rural
Infrastructure Fund for the in.
terchange lift station upgrades,'
stated Linda Cain, Mayor of
Chipley.
"These funds will provide the
wastewater improvements neces
sary to retain hundreds of jobs in
Chipley and create more than 55
additional ones. This area has
seen tremendous economic gains
in the past few years, and these
improvements will support our
current and future growth."
Since taking office in 1999,
Governor Bush has focused on
putting rural Florida on a more
competitive footing with the rest
of the state. Among many rural-
based initiatives, the Governor
created the "Rural Areas of Criti
cal Economic Concern," which
provides rural areas w ith priority
access to the state's economic
and tourism development incen-
tive programs.
To date, Governor Bush has
designated three Rural Areas of

Info on pilots may be at risk

A laptop computer used
by the Department of
Transportation was stolen
in Doral last month, put-
ting personal information
of Florida residents at risk
of the criminal activity the
agency was trying to guard
against, according to the
Orlando Sun-Sentinel.
Social Security num-
bers, birth dates and ad-
dresses were on the laptop
assigned to a special agent
in the Miami office when it
was stolen from a govern-

ment-owned vehicle on
July 27, acting Inspector
General Todd Zinser wrote
Gov. Bush in a letter on
Wednesday.
At risk are about 43,000
Florida residents who
hold pilot's licenses. The
personal information of li-
censed pilots and commer-
cial drivers was being used
by the Miami DOT office
as part of multi-agency
task forces focused on the
use of fraudulent informa-
tionto obtain such licenses,

according to the letter.
The theft was not report-
ed to Zinser for four days,
on July 31, and he didn't
know there were databases
on the laptop until Aug. 5.
The databases were not
lists of individuals under
investigation, but general
lists of license and pilot
certificate holders, the
DOT said. I
The DOT is offering
a reward of $10,000 for
information leading to the
