.-' r * Correction In the April 26 edition of the Washington County News the following item ran in the Arrest Reports: Russ, Allison Marie, b/f, 19; Chipley; possession of drugs with intent to sell; arrested 4/19. This was incorrect information provided to the paper. Russ was actually arrested for violation of probation (VOP) from Escambia County on the charge of posses- sion of controlled substances without a prescription. Scams reported Sheriff Bobby Haddock along with the Washington County Sheriff's Office would like resi- dents to be aware of an influx of new scams being reported to the Sheriff's Office recently. The scams are requesting residents send in various amount of money in return for cash prize win- nings. "Please be careful when responding to these requests even when the amount being re- quested in relati\ ely small", said Haddock. "Often people are less suspicious when it is a smaller amount of money, but residents should remember thieves often go after smaller amounts in an attempt to avoid tipping off the victim that they are being scammed." -For more information on-ocal scams.and fraud visit our w\ebsite at www.wcso.us., If you feel you are a victim of a scam or have would like to report suspicious activity please contact the Wash- ington County Sheriff's Office Investigation Division at (850) 638-6121. 'Buckle Up' A new safety program will be- gin in May. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Admin- istration (NHTSA), pickup truck drivers and their passengers are among the least likely American motorists to regularly wear their safety belts. In fact, 1,782 people were killed in pickup truck crashes in the southeastern states during 2004, including 343 fatalities just in Florida, and 71 percent of the pickup truck occupants killed in those crashes were not using their safety belts at the time of the crash. That is why the Chipley Police Department is joining forces with NHTSA, the Florida Department of Transportation, and other state and local law enforcement agencies across an eight-state region in the southeastern U.S. to launch a high visibility en- forcement initiative in early May called Buckle Up in Your Truck. "No more warnings. No more excuses. We're going to send the Buckle Up in Your Truck mes- sage out loud and clear," Chipley Police Chief, Kevin Crews said. 'Too many pickup truck drivers and their passengers are getting killed, so they need to buckle up * every trip, every time." The Buckle Up in Your Truck initiative immediately precedes the intensive Click It or Ticket national safety belt enforcement mobilization May 14 to June 4. Chief Wade Moon said he has changed his mind, but has not received a response to his call to Town Hall. Moon and Assistant Chief Carl Feely were at Thursday's Wash. ington County Board of County Commissioners meeting. Moon said that Town Council refused to fund firefighters to at- tend Gulf Coast Community Col- lege for firefighter training. He told the Board that Town Coun- cil \\as withholding fire fighting funding due to the advice of the -"to,\ n auditor," and that funds are needed for training and equip- ment. Moon also said that Council would not allow the department to spend money raised in fund- raisers versus money obtained from the county. Moon also said that Town Council would not approve re- imbursing firefighters for salaries lost due to attending training. Moon requested that the Board look: into contracting di- recil, \ iih the--fire- department for service versus a contract with the Town. Ebro received $18,545 for Fiscal Year 2005-06 as part of the formula used by the Board to distribute fire fighting funding throughout Washington County. Ebro Town Clerk Linda Marlow said Friday that after cost of in- surance was deducted there was about $16,000 left. She said the department has already spent about $9,000, and that about $6,700 is left in the budget for the remainder of the fiscal year, which ends .Septem- ber 30. There is about $15,000 in the fire department account, Marlow said, but not all of it is in the budget. She also said that all of the money currently in the ac- count came from the Town and the County. The fire department also re. quested $6,000 for scuba gear at the March 9 Town Council meeting. The request was put on hold pending a request to Sheriff Bobby Haddock to certify that a search and rescue dive team was an essential need. According to the unofficial minutes of the April 13 Town Council meeting. this certification was not pro. vided by Haddock. There is also a question about certification of firefighters. At the April 13 meeting Coun- cil Member Gina Persall said that according to state regular. tions volunteer firefighters are required to receive Firefighter 1 training (also known as 160 training) or the equivalent. Fire departments must show that they are making a good faith effort to get this training. When a firefighter asked if Council was going to reimbursed See COUNCIL, page 5 In Today's Paper... In May 1985, Dr. Klatt spent 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma for more than 83 miles. Throughout the night, friends paid $25 to run or walk 30 min- utes with him. He raised $27,000 to fight cancer. That first year, nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt's friends, fam- ily, and patients watched as he ran and walked the course. While he circled the track those 24 hours, he thought about how others could take part. He envisioned a 24-hour team relay event that could raise more money to fight can- cer. Months later he pulled together a small committee to plan the first team relay event known as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer. In 1986, 19 teams took part in the first team re- lay event on the track at the colorful, historical Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000. Haddock said that more than three million people participate in the Relay for Life all across the country, COUNCIL Continued from page 1 them for salaries lost if they attended the 160-hour training, council members said there was no way this could be done. Town Attorney Kerry Adkison advised Council that there was a question about what the contract with the fire department said, and to not contract have been raised to fight cancer. Haddock said there were over 98,000 new cases of cancer in 2006 in Florida and over 1.3 million new cases of cancer in the U.S. "We are all in the race to find a cure for every kind of cancer," Haddock said. The American Cancer Society was established in 1913 and is the largest pri- vate provider of cancer re- search in the U.S. It boasts 38 Nobel Prize winners.
