Kate M. Smith (KMS)
students, kindergarten
through fourth grade, re-
cently celebrated Earth
Day.
The Earth Day activities
were coordinated by Gina
Page, who teaches envi-
ronmental enrichment to
the students at KMS.
Page supplements the
science and social studies
curriculum at KMS with
lessons and activities that
enrich the skills being
taught by the teacher.
Earth Day was April 22,
students discussed planting
trees, recycling, pollution,
and how they affect the
Earth we live on.
Students decorated over
800. paper grocery' bags.
They made drawings on
the bags to encourage con-
sumers to recycle bottles,
cans and paper.
Some drew pictures of
how pollution can harm
the Earth and some drew
pictures about how to save
water and electricity, and
with Earth, Day slogans
and a message to help
bring about an awareness.
All of the bags were col-
lected from. the students
and will be used this week-
end by a local shopping
center. When shopping this
weekend, be sure to ask for

paper instead, of plastic and
enjoy, the artwork of KMS
students. But most impor
iantly, think about the mes-
sage on the bags and how
to contribute to the care of
the Earth.

Earth Day
celebrated nationwide
today, April 22
On the anniversary of
the first Earth Day in 1970,
the federal government is
cleaning the air, promoting
land conservation, and im-
proving water quality.
According to informa-
tion at www.earthday.gov.
The Bush Administration
is focused on achiev-
ing meaningful results
- cleaner air and water, and
healthier lands and wildlife
habitats.
*The nation's air is
much cleaner today than it
was in 1970 and progress
will continue.
*The trend of annual
loss of wetlands has been
reversed.
*Restoration and rede-
velopment of abandoned
industrial sites is accelerat-
ing.
*President Bush is meet-
ing his commitment to
reduce the National Park
Service maintenance back-
log.

County volunteer firefighters have had their hands full with wildfires in recent weeks.

Following the disastrous
wildfires of 1998, the gov-
ernor designated the second
week of April each year as
Wildfire Awareness Week.
Citizens are urged to be-
come more aware of ways
to protect themselves and
their homes. From March
until late May, Florida
typically experiences dry,
low humidity and windy
weather and sees a marked
increase in wildfire activity
throughout the state.
"Wildfire Awareness
Week, April 9-15, was
a time when Floridians
should remember the di-
sastrous wildfire season

of 1998 and be extremely
careful with all outdoor
fire activity," said Bob
Rhea, Wildfire Mitigation
Specialist with the Florida
Division of Forestry. The
Florida Division of For-
estry will promote Wildfire
Awareness Week as an op-
portunity to get the word
out to citizens about safe
outdoor burning practices.
"If you plan to burn your
yard debris, be sure do it
legally," said Rhea. "If you
must burn yard waste like
dry vegetation, leaves, and
pine needles, burn it in a
barrel or pit with a wire
mesh cover. Always have

simple tools like a rake or
shovel and a source of wa-
ter available. And, attend
the fire at all times."
There are a number of
things 'that homeowners
can do to keep their fire
from escaping and becom-
ing a wildfire:
*Clear at least 10 feet
around the fire area to keep
it from spreading.
*Keep a shovel or rake
and a water source nearby.
*Don't burn on windy
days.
*Make sure you attend
the fire at all times.
*Fire should be started
after 9 a.m. and put out

at least one hour before
sunset.
Make sure you meet the
following set-backs:
*Make sure the fire is
at least 25 feet from your
home and the forest or
wild land.
*The fire should be at
least 50 feet from a public
road.
*The fire should be at
least 150 feet from other
occupied buildings.
*Use alternatives to
burning like mulching or
curbside pick-up.
For information about
burn permits, call 547-
3677 or 547-7083.

Caryville Library
and Literacy
Center update
The following was
written by David Brun-
nle, volufiteer tutor with
"aryville Library and
Literacy Center.
'I guess most of you

were here for the flood of
1994; here today, gone to-
morrow. You're still in the
area, but have vacated the
city limits. There are only
about 300 people left resid-
ing in the city of Caryville.
The surrounding area has
continued to grow.
"I just want people to
know something about the
library that's just down the
street. First of all, hey it's
a library tons of books.
Secondly, there's all kinds
of help computer classes,
reading classes, and all
kinds of instruction.
"After school, there's
help with homework. In
case you want to get a
GED, they will help you
prepare and even set a date
to take the test.
S"Tutors are there and will
teach you to read; all the
literacy volunteers are at
your beck and call. "There
are citizenship classes if
your need dictates. There's
help with writing down
your qualifications in the
form of a resume.
"Man, there's all kinds
of arts and crafts for which
you can enroll. There's
something for everyone
even old disabled retirees
like me. When you stop
wanting to learn, go find
a shade, it's goodbye. God
bless!"
David Brunner is a Lau-
:'bach Certified Volunteer
Tutor, who helps keep the
library open on Mondays
for Caryville residents.
Anyone wishing to make
an appointment should call
