Crystal Thompson firi- ished 2-for-3 with two double, Sarah Durrance also went 2-for-4 with a double. Others with hits were Gavin, Belcher and Hodge. The final regular season game for the Lady Devils was in Cottondale. The game started as a pitch- ing battle as Cottondale held a 1-0 lead going into the fourth inning. In the fourth, the Devils' bats came alive and they scored 17 unanswered runs to take the 17-2 win. Thompson, Pippin and Gavin all pitched for the Devils. They combined .for nine strike outs and only three hits. Once again Thompson was the leading hitter going 4-for-5 with t\\o doubles. Gavin went 3-for-6 \\ith t\\ doubles and Strickland went 2-for-4 \\ ith a triple. Several others finished with hits including Ciera Jackon. Pippin. Hodge and Durrance. , The district tournament will be held in Nlarianna. .n Saturday afternoon the Yellow Jackets hosted the Marianna Bulldogs. With Tyre on the mound and limiting Marianna to four hits and one earned run, the Jackets gained a hard-fought. 5-2 victory. Waylon Miller paced Ver- non with three hits as the Jackets moved to 19-3 on the season. VHS clinched the top seed in the upcoming class 2A, District Two Tourna- ment by handing previously unbeaten and highly ranked Ponce de Leon back-to- back losses. The Jackets defeated the Pirates 10-2 in PDL and 5-1 in Vernon on consecutive Tuesdays. In Vernon's first win over the Pirates, the Jack- ets broke up a close game with seven unanswered runs over the final three in- nings to take the eight run victory. Jed Tyre pitched the first six innings to take the \ in. Tyre gave up four hits while striking out nine batters to bring his record even at 2-2. Tyre led the Vernon attack with three hits and two RBI. Buddy Brock had a double and three RBIs, Josh Crundwell was two for four, and Josh Boyett had a three-run double. One week later, on Tues- day (4/11), Ponce de Leon came to Vernon to avenge their only loss. Ranked seventh in the state poll (to Vernon's 10't-place ranking) the Pirates and their normal contingent of loyal fans came determined to knock off the Jackets. A Pirate win would like- ly give them the first seed (overall record decides a tie in the district) in the tournament. Coach Andy Sheldon sent senior Casey Brock to the mound for Vernon. Coach Jones of the Pirates countered with Cody Car- roll. The Pirates were with- out their ace Chris Peterson who had pitched in the team's first matchup. Brock proved too much for the Pirates, going the distance with a five hitter. Brock had six strikeouts. Jed Tyre led the Jacket attack with a 2-3 effort at the plate and two clutch RBIs. Josh Boyett had a key RBI single, Daniel Lee 2 for 3 with a double, and Buddy Brock scored from second PDL missed on a double play at first and Brock beat the throw home. Casey Brock improved his record to 8-1 for the season. The Jackets close out the regular season week at Bonifay (7 p.m.) Tuesday, April 18th, return to Vernon to host Baker's Gators on Thursday (4/20, 5 p.m.), and end up hosting South Walton, Friday (4/21, 6 p.m. Chiple3 will play Marianna in the opening round of the District 2-3A tournament to decide who plays Holmes County and earns a potjin the pla.offs. The new store opens in Chipley It seems that special an- niversary dates just keep popping into the ole' Prat- tler's memory! Today, I'm torn between two, so I'll have to choose one and go with it. On April 2, 1970, Perry and Hester Wells opened their Sears, Roe- buck and Company Mer- chant Store in Chipley...36 years ago. Many months had gone into the deliberations of whether we should make the job change and move from Panama City to Chipley. It was a seri- ous matter as it required leaving a state job with a livable salary and going into a venture with many unknowns. First, there was no set income as pay day was to be based on a percentage of sales. The Prattler was then 42 years old, with a wife and four sons looking to him for support. After much consterna- tion, hesitation and, hope- fully some sincere prayer, we decided to "go for it." After all, each of us had work experience with Sears in the Panama City store. My first piece of advice came from Pat Patterson of Panama City who told me to contact M.R. Coggin when I arrived in Chipley and he would find me a location' for the business. This suggestion was fol- lowed and Mr. Coggin fulfilled that part of the arrangement and came up with the building on East Highway 90 which 'we agreed to renovate to Sears' specifications. Among the first stops I made upon coming to Chipley in search of a "store front" was Ed Wood's service station, as I was told he was the Mayor of Chipley. I recall seeing Jack Campbell and Charles Curtis visiting with Mr. Wood as. they sat around the electric heater on that cold, blustery January day. David Vann Sr. and Jerry Foxworth were employed in the service station. All received me with open arms, encouraged me in the proposed Sears Catalog Store business and assured me of their help in any way possible. Later, all would became special friends and all of them stood by their promise to be of assistance. The first Sears execu- tive we talked to in Atlanta, Perry's Pr By Perry V who was to make the final decision in selecting the Wellses as Sears Mer- chants in Chipley, was P.R. (Phil) Morgan. Other Sears district managers soon be- gan arriving on the scene, assisting in the layout of the store. They included Ray Sullivan of Troy, Ala., who we learned was to be our district' manager. Ed Moore also had a function in the planning. We learned that he knew Bobby and Sybil Comp- ton of Chipley as he and Bobby met during their military service. Frances Whitsell came into the picture before the opening date and her assignment was training us to actually operate.the store according to Sears' policies. We had other Sears field men on the scene before and during our store opening. The one I viv- idly remember was Jakey Childress. He was the au- tomotive man especially knowledgeable in the area of automobile and truck tires. He was a fun person and Hester and I, for some reason, seem to remember his lighthearted approach in presenting anecdotes in his sales approach. In the beginning, our only employee, aside from the family, was Linda Pet- tis, wife of W.C. (Dub) Pet- tis. Both are now deceased. Their one child is a daugh- ter, Lisa. When the big day came on Thursday, April 2, 1970, it was well advertised. Crowds flocked to the small store all three days. We had a ribbon-cutting ceremony carried out by Mayor Ed Wood. We be- gan writing catalog orders the first day with Bob and. Eloise Jones being our first catalog customer. We, were selling ap- pliances far beyond the expectations of company officials. Shafer Johnson Jr. came to our rescue in in- stalling washers and dryers and later, Bob Turner and his son, Robert, assisted us in installing window air conditioners. The Ed Wood Service Station was our installer for tires and batteries and atfie Sells Grand opening of the Sears Merchant Store in Chipley, April 2, 1970. On the right are Ed Wood, mayor of Chipley, cutting the ribbon with an un- known Sears executive by his side. Linda Pettis, along with Perry and Hester Wells, are shown at left. Hiram Huckaby erected any chain link fence sold. We maintained our oun service department with Gene Majors and Eddie Smith, both trained in Sears' merchandise, doing the repairs of the full line of appliances. Our son, Tim, then age 15, was invaluable in mak- ing deliveries and install- ing televisions and stereos, which were both becoming popular items. Grant as- sisted in writing catalog orders and on deliveries when needed..Sales in the new business grew steadily each month. During our time of op- erating the store, we em- ployed Janet Canum Walls, Jean Johnson and Louise Hancock. My sister, Muri- el, also worked part-time. In February 1972, Hester was stricken with melanoma cancer, which required extensive surgery. Due to the business be- ing closely linked to her participation, a decision was made to sell what we could recover from our in- vestment in the operation. With the approval of Sears, Tommie and Dempsey Guy from Marianna purchased the Chipley store and con- tinued its operation in the same location. Their sales continued to grow month by-month. Ad- ditional employees were added to their store. They built and occupied a larger building and continued the Sears Merchant Catalog Store for several years before Sears made a corpo- rate decision to drop cata- log sales and close all the Merchant Store outlets. Down through the years, Hester and I, along with our entire family, have considered owning and. operating the Sears store as our own business was a great blessing to all of us. It allowed us to break away from what now seems like a "rut" in our lives. It gave us opportunity to meet new friends and renew acquaintances with those we already knew. It also allowed us to be near her parents, Herbert and Pauline Lucas in Hol- mes County, and my folks, Hugh and Marie Wells in Washington County, when both sets of parents were in their declining years. Recently, Judy Owens Sullivan told me of meet- ing up with Ray Sullivan in Troy, Ala., a she and her last husband were travel- ing to Birmingham. She told me that Ray inquired about the Wells family and told her of how he knew us. I must make contact with him. See you-all next week. %,;6 ;;Wl If so, and you're a member of Gulf Coast Electric Cooperative, simply attend our Annual Meeting for an automatic $10 credit on your electric bill. 10 lucky members will win an additional $100 credit! It's easy to ignore the minor ache or pain, just as it's easy for your chiropractor to treat the minor ache or pain. However, let the pain persist and worsen, and the healing process becomes more difficult. That increasing pain, is a signal that the condition is gradually degenerating into a severe ailment. If you are experiencing any discomfort now, get a chiropractic examination before the pain (and the expense) become more severe. 63i -7500 F I King's Furniture & Appliances 2821 Ross Clark Circle, S.W.
