New Mayor Installed in
Otter Creek

Otter Creek's town council meeting Monday resulted
in the installation of a new mayor and vice mayor, the
addition of one council member and the resignation of
another.
In order to fill the council's current vacancy, acting-
mayor Cleah Martin began the meeting with her
nomination of former council member Lila Mae Curry.
Curry was quickly voted in by the rest of the council.
Following Curry's'oath administered by town attorney
Brent Baris, the council officially installed both Martin
and Curry as Mayor and Vice Mayor, respectively.
Otter Creek's interim town clerk, Rose Severino,
reported to the council on the status of the fire
department merger option with'Bronson. The town
council agreed to continue moving forward. They await
the Town of Bronson's council discussion to be held
Mon., Feb. 4, before further action is taken.
The council of Otter Creek is in full support of the
merger and hopes that Bronson's council.will agree that
both districts can benefit each other. "One of the things
we have going for us," Severino said, is that Otter Creek
has better liability insurance than most fire departments
in the county, "including Bronson." The council hopes
this will aid the Town of Bronson-to bemore confident
in the merger.
Near the end of the meeting, council member Lois
Nygard resigned her position effective immediately. As
her final act, she motioned for the meeting to adjourn.
The next regular-scheddued Otter Creek town meeting
will be held on President's Day, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m.
Morriston Home
Invasion Leaves Man
in Critical Condition
On January 17, 2008 at 6:24 a.m. the Levy County
Sheriff's Office received a 9-1-1 call from 19650 SE 32
Place in Morriston in reference to a home invasion and
shooting.
The victims were asleep when the unknown person
forcibly entered the residence. Upon entry the male victim
confronted the intruder and he was shot with an unknown
type firearm. The victim was transported to University of
Florida Shands Hospital where he is listed in critical but
stable condition.
At this time the Department of Corrections from Cross
City, Florida is assisting in the investigation with their K-9
team.
Alien Arrested for
Lewd and Lascivious
Conduct in Chiefland
On Jan. 15, a Lake Worth man was arrested in Chiefland
for lewd and lascivious molestation on a child under twelve
years of age.
Earlier that day, the mother of the victim noticed that
her child was not eating supper and was visibly shaken
and distraught. The victim's mother inquired why the
victim was so upset. The victim wanted the defendant
to leave because the defendant touched the victim in an
inappropriate manner. The .

Bronson and Otter Creek Fire
Departments Consider Merger

The Bronson/Otter Creek Fire Department Merger
Committee held its first meeting on Jan. 15 to discuss
whether the two departments should become one.
Fire Chiefs Rick Lombardo of Bronson and Scott Bulson
of Otter Creek were joined by nine of their fellow residents
to discuss the options in detail.
Currently, Otter Creek cannot meet the statutory
requirements to be a recognized fire department. By joining
forces, the two fire chiefs would work together to meet
equipment and manpower regulations.
In addition to Otter Creek becoming a recognized
department, the union would benefit both departments
by creating a budget that will most likely allow for paid
daytime staff in each location by the end of this year.
Manned stations would mean that equipment was kept ready
and checked daily, as well as provide guaranteed response
to calls.
In order for these advantages to happen, however, the
two departments must combine their budgets into one.
"Keeping the money separate is not going to help you as
much as co-mingling will," said Lamar Stegall, Williston
Fire Chief. Stegall is also the chairman of the Levy
County Fire Advisory Board and attended the meeting to
offer his support of the merger. He cited better equipment
consolidation and a budget surplus as other positive results

if the monies are blended.
To ensure fairness, Stegall explained, a balanced steering
committee should be appointed to oversee the united
departments. It should consist of at least five community
members, one member from each fire department, one
member from each town council, and one unbiased area
resident, impartial and not directly affiliated with either
community.
The merger committee agreed that a steering committee
would be appropriate. They resolved that a long-range
plan is needed for both districts, including a set of detailed
procedures. "What you've got to look at is where you will
be in five years," Stegall told the two fire chiefs.
Lombardo and Bulson arranged to perform a
comprehensive inventory of Otter Creek's equipment.
Together, they will determine a plan of action for the district
to become recognized.
The Merger Committee unanimously agreed that the
merger should move forward.
Their next step is to make these recommendations to the
town councils, of each department. They will reconvene
Feb. 5 at 6:30 pm at the Bronson Fire Station to address any
additional concerns and discuss further action. The meeting
is open to public.
"No matter what happens," Chief Lombardo said of the
merger, "we're still going to be there for the people of Otter
Creek."
CFCC Plans New Campus
in Chiefland

The Chiefland Rotary Club welcomed representatives from
the Central Florida Community College to speak to the club
about the new campus being planned for Chiefland. Currently
the Levy Center of CFCC is in the shopping center at the corner
of US 129 and US 19. According to Dr. Rayanne Giddis,
director of the Levy Center, the campus has no room to grow in
their current 14,000-square foot facility.
Lisa Lombardo, Chair of Major Gifts for CFCC, presented
the plan for the new permanent campus.
The new facility will sit on a 15.5-acre parcel of land donated
by benefactors Jack and Loy Ann Mann of Chiefland. It is
located on U.S. 19 between Chiefland and Fanning Springs.
Lombardo outlined what is involved in building a new
community college campus community involvement and state
funding. She said there has been overwhelming community
support for this campus in terms of donations. The state matches
these donated funds dollar-for-dollar. She stated that many Levy
County citizens have stepped up and committed support for the
campus and that the dream will become a reality very soon.
The new campus will have 22,000 square feet of state-of-
the-art facilities, including technical, science and computer
labs, exhibit-style conference and reception facility, a
corporate training support suite and video and teleconferencing
technology.

such as St. Leo and University
of Florida to offer classes at
the center so many residents
may be able to finish their
bachelor's degrees here in

advanced construction and manufacturing skills, public safety
and security occupations and more.
The college's goal is to raise $1.5 million plus the matching
funds to help build the $9- million facility. When questioned
about "when," Lombardo stated that the best-case scenario would
be to begin construction in the summer of 2009.
Lombardo wrapped up by stating that on average each
community college graduate produces 2.6 jobs per year and tends
to remain in the community where they received their education,
which is beneficial to Levy County's economy.

Gala on Sat., Feb. 2. The
event, which includes dinner
and musical entertainment,
will take place at 6 p.m. in
the Williston Middle School
cafetorium.
The Gala is the premier
fund-raiser for the Levy
County Schools Foundation,
a not-for-profit organization
established in 1989 to support
Levy County schools. The
event has become a Levy
County tradition, providing an
opportunity for members of
the business community, civic
leaders, and local residents
to gather in support of local
education.
The past seven Galas have
raised over $80,000 to support
a variety of educational-
related initiatives and help the
foundation expand its mission.
"The Gala not only raises
funds for the foundation,"
said Superintendent Cliff
Norris, "but also showcases
the talent of our students, and
highlights the generous and
continuing support of so many
corporate partners, as well as
local residents who want to
ensure our students' academic
success." Norris will serve as
master of ceremonies for the
event as he has done since the
Gala's inception.
The theme for this year's
program is "Night on
Broadway" and the musical
program will reflect that with
students from Chiefland,
Bronson and Williston High
Schools performing awarding-
winning songs from Broadway
shows. Also, previous
scholarship recipients will be
sharing their experiences in
college.
Another Gala tradition
will be continued by students
of the Williston High School
Culinary Arts program, who
will cater the five-course -
dinner under the direction of
teacher Earleen Williams.
The foundation has
established three contribution
levels for the Gala. All donors
will be recognized at the event.
The levels are: Gold table
patrons for contributions of
$1,000 or more; silver table
patrons for contributions of
$500 to $1,000; and bronze
patrons for contributions of
$250 to $500.
Gold patrons received eight
complimentary gala tickets.
Silver patrons receive four gala
tickets. Bronze patrons receive
two gala tickets. A limited
number of individual tickets
are available at $50 each.

Log Cabin Quilters met Thurs., Jan.17 at the Levy
County Quilt Museum. Another busy day. One of the log
cabin quilts was taken out of the frame and Goldie will hem
it at home. B.J. put in a top to be quilted at home. Jannie
brought in a top that is simple to piece and can be made
in many ways. Rose brought in a wreath using wood to
decorate. Sherie has finished her first quilt and now she
learns to quilt. Dorothy brought in a big bag of scraps to be
given away and everyone had a great day.
Derick and six boys were out Wednesday and what a
day we had, four boys learned how to unroll, measure, cut,
fold and tie two 80-yard rolls of batting that we use for our
quilts. They did a great job, and it saved us many hours of
bending to get it all done. Thanks, Lancaster.
We are full for our bus trip, and if you find you can't go
please call us. We have a waiting list. It will be a great day
when we go down and see if anyone won any ribbons.

and rice, meat balls, rolls, salads, lots of desserts and

Let's Save "Old Folks at Home"
Because Governor Charlie Crist, no doubt pandering to South Florida influences, decides
that Stephen Foster's "Old Folks at Home" wasn't good enough for his inaugural ceremony,
Florida's official state-song may be floating way down upon the Suwannee River. Two
senators plan to sponsor legislation to scuttle the state song.
The popular song adopted as the official state song of Florida in 1935 was updated
in 1978 with the dedication of the new capitol building to remove potentially sensitive
language.
But, that's not good enough, according to Senator Tony Hill of Jacksonville and
Representative Ed Homan of Temple, who plan to sponsor the legislation to replace it. Hill
and Homan and members of the black caucus feel it's time to kill the song.
Last year, a Florida education association sponsored a song contest, selected three songs,
and put them to an online vote to succeed "Way Down Upon the Swanee." About 8,000
participated and the new song with the most online votes was "Florida Where the Sawgrass
Meets the Sky." That is the song the two politicians will introduce as the replacement for
"The Swanee River (Old Folks at Home)" during the 2008 legislative session, which begins
in March.
Trouble is, every other online poll since the announcement for the contest was made
overwhelmingly goes for keeping "Old Folks at Home." We around here agree.
It's not too late. Let's stop this excessive political correctness. Let's add our voices to
the chorus for keeping "Way Down Upon the Swanee River" as our state song. Patriotic
southerners should contract their state congressman and register your "vote."

Hello and welcome to Your Sheriff's Corner.
Last week a person entered a Morriston couple's
residence and the suspect shot the victim, leaving
him critically-wounded. I have had many phone calls
from homeowners in the Morriston area disturbed
and alarmed about this incident. I totally understand
why the residents are alarmed because this is a quiet
and peaceful neighborhood and usually there is little
to no crime in this rural community.
A burglary is committed everyten seconds in theUnited States. Someof'these burglaries
even occur in gated commotie,,quiet neighborhoods and;rural areas where.oftentimes
residents have become complacent about safety issues. A false sense of security dictates
that this will never happen to me, but nothing could be further from the truth. Usually
burglaries are committed when no one is home. They will use different type of ploys by
knocking on your door to see if you are home before breaking in. If you are home, the
person may ask for directions, ask if you need work done around the house or ask to borrow
money. If this occurs I would ask that you not allow the person in your residence and
immediately call the Sheriff's Office with a description of the person /vehicle and direction
of travel when leaving your residence.
Most burglars take the path of least resistance and look for an open window or unlocked
door. Burglars usually have a good working knowledge of different types of doors and
windows, how they work and their weak points. Sliding glass doors are defeated easily so
install a quality lock, place a wooden dowel in the bottom track and also have a steel pin on
the top of the sliding door. This will eliminate the potential intruder from lifting the sliding
glass door from the track and also prying the door open.
Other effective deterrents are having an alarm and monitored by a reputable alarm
company, installing motion detection lights that are activated if someone prowls near your
home, having your shrubbery and trees trimmed back and have a telephone near your bed
when you go to sleep, so if someone breaks in your residence you can immediately call
for help. Another recommendation I would offer is to have a safe room in your residence.
Usually bedroom and bathroom doors are hollow core doors that can be easily kicked in.
With minimum cost you can replace the hollow core door with and make your safe room
more fortified by replacing it with a solid core door with a dead bolt lock.
A frequent question I receive is, "do I need to have a gun permit to own a gun in my
residence?" The answer to this question is if you are not a convicted felon, been adjudged
mentally incompetent or declared addicted to the use of narcotics or habitual chronic
alcoholic, you can have a firearm inside your home. In Florida, you are required to have
a concealed firearm permit if you desire to have a firearm concealed on your person in a
public place. It is my recommendation that you receive qualified training from a certified
organization before owning any weapons.
If you go on vacation, have a trusted neighbor or friend pick up your mail, newspapers
and flyers. Have them park a car in the driveway and give them a key to do "pop in" checks
periodically. Make sure your lawn is cared for and consider having some lights that switch
on by timers, or even play a radio while you are gone.

As you can see with very little time and money, you can
improve your home security and decrease your chances
of becoming a victim. In order for Community Policing
to be effective, I need you to be involved and report any

Thomas "Tommy" Truitt Mills of Cross City passed away
Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at his home. He was 48.
Mr. Mills was born in Cross City and was a lifetime
resident of Dixie County, except for the time he served in
the U.S. Air Force. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his father, Roy Mills of Cross City;
a son, Thomas Matthew Mills of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a
daughter, Jessica Mills of Jacksonville; brother, Kenneth
(Penny) Mills of Cleveland, Tenn.; sisters, Helen (Davis)
Bennett of Mayo, Linda (Dalton) Howell of Cross City,
Carolyn Dutton of Danville, Ala., Eva (John) Malone of
Waynesboro, Miss., Annette (Henry) Wilson of Cross City,
and Diana (David) Harris of Branford.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 19, 2008
at the Rick Gooding Funeral Home, with Rev. Wayne Allen
and Bobby Lindsey officiating. Burial followed at the Cross
City Cemetery. A visitation was held on Friday, January 18,
2008 at the funeral home.
Arrangements were placed under the care of Rick
Gooding Funeral Home, Cross City.
PAUL D. QUIGLEY
Paul D. Quigley passed away at home surrounded by
family on December 26, 2007. He was 79.
He was born in Prattsburg, NY on January 16, 1928. In
1973, Paul moved his family to Gainesville and also lived
in Bronson and Newberry. Paul was a member of the
Moose Lodge in Chiefland. His hobbies included fishing
and spending time with his family, and enjoyed playing pool
with his friends
His wife Eleanor Quigley preceded him in death on
March 5, 2007. They were married for 52 years. He was
also preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Quigley and a
sister, Violet Quigley.
His daughter Valerie Moreau of Newberry and his son
Gary Quigley of Bronson, survive Paul. He has three
grandchildren Jason Moreau, Stefanie McMillian and
Danielle Moreau and two great-grandchildren Brayden
McMillian (Woodchuck), age 3 and Parker Moreau, age 10.
Paul had three siblings and is survived by a sister Sharon
Quigley, his nieces include Deborah Quigley of Lakeland
and Melissa Quigley of Prattsburg, NY.
JO ANN ST. JOHN
Jo Ann St. John of Williston passed away on Sunday,
January 20, 2008. She was 53.
Born in Meadville, Penn. she came to Williston four
years ago from Edinboro, Penn. She belonged to Trinity
United Methodist Church in Conneaut Lake, Penn. She
worked as a Farm Division Realtor with FoxFire Realty in
Ocala. She also enjoyed showing horses.
She is survived by her parents, Hayden and Lillian
Smalllenberger; her daughter, Jackie. St. John; two
grandchildren, Joelle and Josette Covarrubias; several aunts,
uncles and cousins.
Services will be held at Knauff Funeral Home
Wednesday, January 23 at 7 p.m. with visitation from 5-7
p.m.
Arrangements were under the care of Knauff Funeral
Home of Williston.

My grandpa pretty much paid cash for everything he ever
bought; except, of course, his house. I understand it took
him nearly a year and a half and two bumper crops to pay
that off.
If my Mimi needed a new Lincoln, Papa went and got a
Continental; cash money. If the farm needed a new cotton
picker, Papa went down to John Deere, with cash money..
When it came time to pay his workers, Papa would dig in
his britches and whip out a wad of bills thick enough to
befuddle Ben Bernanke.
No, he wasn't rich. In fact, his folks had been poor
immigrants from Italy. Papa was just smart enough to
embrace the American way of working hard and staying out
of debt. I never gave him much credit for it, at least not until
the day he drove up with a brand new yellow three-wheeler
in the back of his truck.
If he had intended it for 'Farm Use Only' he'd obviously
failed to consider the nerve pounding pressure produced by
the overwhelming whining wattageand pleading power of
two bored,towheaded boys visiting on a summer break.
Yes, within hours my little brother Heath and I had
not only talked him out of the keys, but run through his
inaugural tank of gas. Naturally we were miles from home
when it sputtered to a stop. Something told me we should've
listened to Papa's instructions before peeling out on his foot
and tearing off.
They were just shy of filing a missing persons report
when we finally made it back to the house that night. Papa
was hot. He yelled at us all the way back to the three-
wheeler. Then again, when he realized we'd left the lights
on and drained the battery. It was a good thing we didn't
understand Italian.
Over the next few months we stirred up so many turn
rows around town our dust clouds were starting to show
up on local weather forecast. The townsfolk took to calling
us the 'Dusty Duo.' Papa was even considering the police
chief's suggestion about getting us helmets.

It was great. We'd never experienced such freedom.
Other than the occasional bump or bruise suffered during
minor altercations over whose turn it was to drive, life
couldn't have been going any sweeter. Then the rains came.
For two days, big fat thunderheads sat upon us and
pelted the parched little town. Finally, on the third day, the
lightning abated somewhat and the rain slowed to a heavy
sprinkle. We headed back out for ole' Yeller. We'd been
cooped up in that house so long I'm not sure who was more
excited, us or Papa.
Our attention swung immediately to the low swag in the
side yard, which was now ankle deep. You could hardly tell
Papa's best stand of Bermuda was under there.
I suggested it would be a good place to carve out a nice
little figure eight track and start our own version of the mud
derbies. It turned out to be great fun, at least until Heath
alleged that I was cheating as the official time keeper. The
proceeding altercation caused tempers to flare, and greatly
fueled the fierceness of our competition. ..
Soon we'd whipped that mud up into a froth, and the
RPMs were revving right off the gauge. We were slipping
and sliding like barefoot bblweevils break-dancing in a
bowl of buttered boiled okra!
We were so wrapped up in winning we didn't even notice
how the water sizzled when splashed up on that overtaxed
little engine, or how the clouds we were now riding under
were not thunderheads at all. They had a much more oily
smell.
Yes, we were blissfully, and perhaps, willfully ignorant
of all the warning signs. We were still talking trash right
up to the point ole' Yeller backfired and locked up on us.
I don't recall a lot of our dialog after that, but I'm sure it
included the phrase, "Uh-oh!"
Isn't that just the way it is most times? A new generation
coming up doesn't take time to consider or appreciate the
sacrifices and the struggles their forefathers endured to
bring them the freedoms they now enjoy.
It sure happened with ole' Yeller that day. I just hope it
doesn't happen here, with
Old Glory. The Lord has
blessed us so because of our
forefathers' determination
to establish 'One Nation
under God.' I just hate to
see us drag it all through the
mud now. Yet they would
not listen to their judges but
prostituted themselves to
other gods and worshiped
them. Unlike their fathers,
they quickly turned from the
way in which their fathers
had walked, the way of
obedience to the LORD's

Neither Heath nor I knew much about praying, but we
suddenly felt compelled to learn. We called a truce and fell
to our muddy knees together. From there we did what came
natural. We begged. We pleaded with God to spare us from
the great wrath of Papa!
We found the Lord to be most merciful. In nothing short .
of a miracle, ole' Yeller sputtered back to life and ran long
enough for us to get her back to the barn. The rains revived
and flooded over the muddy mess we had made, at least until
we could call momma and have her come take us home!
But anyway I learned a lot about stewardship that day,
and how easy it can be to totally ruin an awesome blessing i
entrusted to you. I also learned the value of prayer and the
power of repentance. Boy, if we could just get a hold of these
things as a nation.

The Levy County Transportation Disadvantaged
Coordinating Board will conduct its business meeting
on Thurs., Jan. 24 at 10 a.m. The meeting will be held

The ESE Parent Advisory Committee is sponsoring
a "Make and Take" workshop Sat., Jan. 26 from 9 a.m.
to noon. The workshop will be held at the Levy County
Title 1 Teacher Resource Lab located behind the
School Board office in Bronson. Ms. Sherry Garnett,
Title 1 Resource Lab Specialist, will be available to
assist parents in making academic learning games for
all subject areas. The workshop will give parents the
opportunity to make great resource materials that will
assist them in helping their children at home in different
academic areas.
First Saturday Book Sale Feb. 2
Friends of the Williston Public Library will hold its
next First Saturday Book Sale on Sat., Feb.. 2 from
8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be at the City Hall Community
Center.
Volunteers to help with the sale are asked to come
to the center Thursday Night, 6 p.m. to unload books
and begin.setting up. On Friday at 9 a.m. volunteers
are needed to sort books for display. Workers are also
needed to help with the sale, Saturday from 8:30 a.m.
until 1:30 p.m.
The sales are one of the main sources of funding for
"Friends" to help provide needed items for the library
over and above those provided by the city and county.
Because books are donated for the sale the prices
are very cheap. Hardback books are $1.00; softbacks,
50 cents; paperbacks, 25 cents and children's books
and magazines are 10 cents. Puzzles, games and
miscellaneous items are priced at $1.00 and below.

Hartzog Earns Praise from Commissioners
and New Contract as City Manager

Chiefland City Manager Grady Hartzog got high marks
'for his job performance, another year contract and a raise
when commissioners evaluated him Jan. 14.
On a scale of 1 to 5, Hartzog got 4.1, the highest mark
since the grading system was initiated several years ago.
Along with good report card came praise for his work.
"This is the highest score we've had," said Mayor-
Commissioner Teal Pomeroy. Addressing other
commissioners, he said, "I've been happy with Mr. Hartzog
and by the evaluations, you have too."
Commissioners gave Hartzog another year contract with a
six-percent raise. His salary went from $65,000 to $68,900.
His position as city manager began about a year ago.
In awarding him a raise, commissioners noted that he was
not getting city health insurance, which costs the city about
$5,000 a year for each employee. They also noted that he
was the only city employee not to get a three-percent raise
during last year's budget increases.
Commissioner Rollin Hudson noted that Hartzog
maintained a management style that fostered an atmosphere
of good productivity from city workers.
Hartzog made few comments during the discussion but
after the vote thanked commissioners for their confidence.
He briefly described his view of serving the city. Every
problem has a solution, he said, and the residents of the
City of Chiefland must be foremost in the minds of city
employees.
"We want to make sure that our citizens are taken care
of," he said.
Hartzog's contract was extended for another year. When
Pomeroy joked that a five-year contract might be in order,
Hartzog replied, "I'd be glad to go along with it if nature
would allow me."
Commissioner Teresa Barron moved to approve the new
contract. Commissioner Frank Buie seconded the motion.
The contact was approved by a unanimous vote.

Enterprize Zone Project
Helps Williston Business
The Levy County Enterprise Zone Development
Agency (EZDA) of Levy County has yet another success
story. The Levy County EZDA assisted Royal Tanz, a new
tanning salon and retail store located in the new Williston
Business Plaza in the heart of Williston.
Royal Tanz owner Debra Addison worked with Pamela
Blair, Executive Director of the Levy County EZDA, who
provided all the necessary documentation for application
in November 2007. Ms. Addison spent $25,440.00 on
four tanning beds for the salon. The State of Florida sales
tax was $1,440.00. On January 17, 2008, Ms. Addison
received a refund of 97% of the state sales tax, equaling
$1,396.80.
The Levy County Enterprise Zone is becoming known
in the county and around the country. I am getting calls
and inquiries from everywhere. These incentives are
important for businesses and can really assist a new
small business in recovering start-up expenses. We
have numerous pending applications for businesses in
Chiefland, Bronson and Williston.

Red Devils Hold Off
Tigers for Win 66-58

The Williston Red Devils boys' basketball team
had to hold onto their early lead and hold off a
determined Trenton Tigers'team in a good basketball
game on Thursday evening.
With the warmer temperatures outside the gym,
the sweat poured off the players in a fast and furious
game.
The Williston Red Devils managed to pull away in
the last minute for the 66-58 win.
The Red Devils scored the first points and never
trailed the aggressive Tigers throughout the game.
Both teams started the-game strong, but the Red
Devils pushed a little harder with each possession of
the ball, staying ahead the whole game.
The Red Devils ran their way to a 40-23 lead
as the first half ended with both teams feeling the
effects of the warm temperatures inside the Williston
gymnasium.
As the third quarter began, Trenton was ready for
their comeback, making their first shot to start the
second half.
The Tigers were playing hard and the Red Devils
began to press alittle harder as the fouls began to help
the Tigers in their comeback effort.
The Tigers were able to cut the 17-point deficit
down to a five-point game behind the play of Cam
Cross and Henry Durell.
The Red Devils, however, seemed to have too
much strength at the end as they held off the surging
Tigers to take the win 66-58. They just wouldn't give
up as they held on for the win.
Cam Cross led all scorers with 19 points for the
Trenton Tigers and Henry Durell added 15 points.
Deonte Welch led the Red Devils in scoring with
18 points, CJ James had 14 points and Isaac Floyd
finished with 13 points.
In the junior varsity game played earlier, the Red
Devil junior varsity had little trouble as they downed'
the Trenton junior varsity Tigers 70-29.
Eagles Junior Varsity
Fall in Third Quarter to
Hornets

The Bronson junior varsity boys' basketball team gave a quick
lead to the Hawthorne junior varsity team as they committed eight
first quarter turnovers.
The Hornets took what they were given and took a 14-8 first
quarter lead over the junior varsity Eagles.
As the second quarter got underway, the Eagles missed several
opportunities at some wide open lay-ups that just would not fall in
the basket.

There was no quit in the Eagles however, and they came roaring
back to pull to within two points at 22-24 just before the first half
ended.
The Eagles had several more turnovers and missed shots and the
Hornets scored the last six points of the first half to take a 30-22
lead.
As the second half got started, the Hornets came out and stopped
the Eagles cold. It was a combination of good defense by the
Hornets and cold shooting and bad passes by the Eagles that allowed
the Hornets to outscore the Eagles 21-6 in the decisive third quarter.
The fourth and final quarter was played more evenly by both
teams as the Hornets and Eagles traded baskets most of the way.
The junior varsity Hornets went on to win the game 65-39.
Casey Jenkins led all scorers with 17 points for the Hornets and
James Brown added 13 points.
The Eagles were again led by Enrique Wiseman with 13 points
while Zack Hamilton had 7 points, and Dustin Crutchfield added 6
points.

If outright hustle and hard play won basketball games, the
Chiefland Lady Indians would be undefeated.
But, as we all know, it is points scored by having the ball
go in the basket.
The way this happens you have to maintain control of the
basketball and be able to take your shots at the basket.
In this evening's basketball game between the Chiefland
Lady Indians and the Newberry Lady Panthers, you would
never guess that the Lady Panthers led the game at the end of
each quarter by a wide margin as the game progressed.
The Lady Indians, from the opening tip until the very last
second ticked off the clock, hustled at both ends of the court
and played as hard as any coach could want.
On both offense and defense, the Lady Indians never quit.
Under the boards the Lady Indians went right after the ball
against the much taller Lady Panthers.
The only problem the Lady Indians were having was the
fact the ball would just not fall through the basket.
The last time these two teams met it was that same hard
play and hustle that brought the Lady Indians back from
a 12-point fourth quarter deficit to tie the game after four
quarters, and the Lady Indians went on to win the game in
overtime.
But this was not the case in tonight's game. The hustle
and hard play was there for the Lady Indians, but the points
never happened.
Turnovers instead of shots were a big problem for the
Lady Indians. After playing outstanding defense and usually
making a steal or coming down with a rebound, the Lady
Indians would turn the ball over. This was the game story,
time and time again.
The Newberry Lady

When you watch the Bronson Lady Eagles take the court
and execute their game, it is a simple offense. Pass the ball,
swinging it around the perimeter and keep looking inside to
the post. When there is an opening, pass the ball to Elizabeth
and watch the defense collapse around her, sometimes three
or four players.
Elizabeth of course is Elizabeth Gay, the outstanding
center for the Lady Eagles who is almost unstoppable
once she has the ball. There.are usually two or three
grabbing at hef arms as she goes up for a fay-up, and she
sometimes ends up at the foul line.
Elizabeth towers over most of the defenders and she is
a powerful and athletic player with a soft touch around the
basket.
The Hawthorne Lady Hornets found out just how
dominating Elizabeth can be on any given night.
The junior center for the Lady Eagles controlled the game
as she poured in 31 points for the Lady Eagles as they beat
the Lady Hornets 46-24.
In this game Elizabeth outscored the entire Lady Hornets
team, 31-24.
The Lady Hornets kept the game close and in doubt right'
up to the fourth quarter, with a balanced scoring attack of
their own.
The Lady Hornet's trailed by just seven points at the end
of the third quarter, 28-21.
The Lady Eagles had been playing 11 different players G"

Fall Short 29-25_

After trailing the middle school Bell Bulldogs 13-9at the halftime
break, the Bronson middle school boys came roaring back to start the
third quarter.
Middle school Eagle AJ Graham ade three straight steals and turned,
two of them into easy baskets as he pulled the Eagleto withiri two
points to start the third quarter ofplay at 13-15.
After a free throw by each team, and a 16-14 Bulldog lead, Graham
againhit a short fall away jump shot to tie the game at 16-16.
Again it was Graham on a steal anda basket to but the middle school
Eagles up 19-16 as the Bulldogs called time out.
The middle school Bulldogs then went back to their bread and butter
player in the post, Tyler Mehl who was the tallest player on the floor
by several inches: Mehl got a lay up as the third quarter ended with the
Bronson middle school held a 19-18 lead.
The teams exchanged several baskets in a fast moving fourth quarter.
The middle school Bulldogs continued to go to their big man Mehl in
the middle and the middle school Eagles could not stay with him.
The middle school Bulldogs took a four point lead and went on to win
the game 29-25.
AJ Graham finished the game with 15 points for the middle school
Eagles and Tavaris Thomas had 4 points.
Tyler Mehl led all players in scoring with 16 points for the Bell
Bulldogs and Brandon Stone added 7 points.

Oak Hall Plays Solid Second Half for Win

Bronson Lady Eagles in the second half with solid defense
and scoring off turnovers in varsity basketball action
Saturday evening.

pressure on the Bronson Eagles scoring
machine, Elizabeth Gay.
The Oak Hall Lady Eagles dominated the
entire second half and seemed unstoppable.
With 5:19 left to play in the fourth
quarter, team leader Coral Denton went out
of the game with a resprained ankle.
Unfortunately for the home team
Bronson Lady Eagles, Jenni Baxter stepped
in for the injured leader from Oak Hall and
poured in six points in the crucial fourth
quarter.
Breckley Neale led all scores with 28
points for Oak Hall. She had the uncanny
ability to intercept the ball on the dribble.
She did it over and over. She worked
with teammate Coral Denton to form the
backbone of the defense and offense for
Oak Hall.
Elizabeth Gay was the point leader
for the Bronson Lady Eagles. She scored
most of her points in the first half. She was
guarded more closely and surrounded by
defenders each time she got the ball and
was not a factor in the second half.
Oak Hall coaches stated that they talked
about playing harder during the halftime
break.
My guess is they decided to guard
Elizabeth Gay, too.

Lady Red Devils Play Strong Under
Pressure for Win

Jason Odom, head coach of the Lady Red Devil basketball team commented after the game, "I
jif t wanted to see how some of my players would react under pressure." When I asked him why he
didn't make some adjustments or call a time out when the St. Francis Lady Wolves made a tremendous
comeback effort inthe third quarter?
The Lady Red Devils were up by as many as 16
points starting the third quarter as they reeled off
ten straight points against the Lady Wolves midway
through the third quarter of a foul-plagued game.
There were a total of44 personal fouls whistled
by only two game officials.
My question for this night's game was, where
was the third official for the game?
There isusually not that much action going pi
in high school basketball on a Saturday night in
Levy County.
Maybe the third official was somewhere waiting
for the Gators and Wildcats to tip-off.
In some cases, for both teams, it appeared the
whistle would blow in anticipation, before contact
by the players.
There were 50 free throws taken by both teams
and there would have been more if the teams had
been more accurate on the front end of their one-
and-one free throws.

Bronson Boys Turn Over Game on Turnovers

The Bronson Eagles varsity boys basketball team jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead over the
Hawthorne Hornets at the Bronson gym.
The Hornets called a timeout and started over and this time they were ready to get down
to business. The Hornets had a lot of help from the Eagles on the way to their win over the
Eagles 62-40.
The Eagles are a team that plays team ball and they take care of the ball on offense while
playing excellent defense.
The first quarter became a fast and furious up and down the court game as the Hornets
made a seven-point run to take the lead 14-13 as the first quarter ended.
The teams played fairly
evenly in the second quarter,
exchanging baskets on
several occasions.
The Eagles were sparked
by a three-point basket by
Kelby Barber and a twisting
lay-up by Terrance Dukes to
put the Eagles in front 27-20.

began to have trouble getting

tightened the pressure and the Eagles began to turn the ball over again and again.
The Hornets took a 43-36 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Eagles could not get their turnover problem resolved as the Hornets continued to pull
away in the fourth quarter as they began to drop in several three-point baskets.
The Hawthorne Hornets went on to accept the gifts of turnovers by the Eagles to win the
game 62-49.
Terrance Dukes led the Eagles in scoring with 16 points, as William Harris had 11 points
and James Rivers added 10 points.
The Hornets had three players in double figures with a
well-rounded scoring effort. Jimmy Johnson and Rodrick
Goggins each had 11 points and Maurice Cook added 10
points for the Hornets.

options under Florida law.

Florida law allows a tenant
to send a "Rent Withholding
Letter" to the landlord. Our

applicant and to request that
the District withdraw these
credits from the bank's credit
ledger. In many cases, the
banker is not a single individual
but a partnership comprised
of multiple parties and it may
be desirable to require the
approval of all partners prior to
withdrawal of mitigation credits.
The specific rule revision will
accomplish this purpose by the
insertion of a single sentence in
Section 6 of Appendix 4 stating
"At the request of the banker, the
District shall require additional
signatures to authorize the
withdrawal of mitigation credits."
40D-4.331 Modification of
Permits.
Rule 40D-4.331, F.A.C., is
amended to require use of a
new Modification Short Form
application form to be used
instead of a letter to request
certain minor modifications
without completing a formal ERP
application form or submitting
an application fee. Amendments
also clarify that permits may
be extended in duration, as
opposed to being "renewed,"
and allow requests to extend
the duration of an ERP to be
made using the Modification
Short Form. Applications to
extend the duration of an ERP
will be granted if.the construction
proposed to take place during
the extended permit duration will
comply with the District's rules in
effect at the time the application
is filed.
40D-40.331 Modification of
Permits.
This rule amendment is one
of several rule amendments
proposed by the District to
implement a new Modification
Short Form for requesting certain
types of minor modifications
of an Environmental Resource
Permit (ERP). Rule 40D-40.331,
F.A.C., is amended to require
use of the newly adopted
Modification Short Form in lieu of
a letter when requesting certain
minor modifications of Standard

Students who hope to attend
college will be given a clear
path to federal cash assistance
during a free statewide event
known as Florida College Goal
Sunday on Feb. 24. Central
Florida Community College
will have financial experts
available to help college-bound
students and their families
complete the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid, or
FAFSA.
The event will be held from 2
to 5 p.m. at the Bryant Student
Union on the Ocala Campus,
3001 S.W. College Road.
Reservations are encouraged
and can be completed by

The School Board of Levy County reaffirmed unanimous
opposition to teaching evolution as a scientific fact, meeting
in regular session Tuesday.
Current state science standards avoid mentioning the
word evolution, although concepts of natural selection and
change over time are addressed. The proposed guidelines,
to be decided upon by the Florida Department of Education
this month, include the following additions:
Grade 7: "Recognize and describe that fossil evidence
is consistent with the idea that human beings evolved from
earlier species."
Grades 9-12: "Evolution is the fundamental concept
underlying all of biology and is supported by multiple forms
of scientific evidence."
Nearing the end of the sixty-day period in which
the public can comment on the proposed revisions,
Superintendent Cliff Norris drafted a letter stating SBLC's
strong opposition to the changes. He asked the board
members for their signatures so that it can be sent to the
deciding DOE committee, as well as area legislators.
"Unfortunately," said Norris, if the revisions pass, "the
teachers of this district will not have a choice but to teach
evolution as fact. It will even appear on the FCAT."
"Well then, I recommend we sign that letter quickly
and get it sent," responded Paige Brookins, board member
representing the Chiefland area.
Educational Facilities Assessment
Jeff Davis, Assistant Superintendent, presented a
comprehensive Facility Needs Assessment conducted
countywide, incorporating input from faculty, staff, and
School Advisory Councils. The facilities ists are a required
component of the Five-Year Educational Plant Survey to be
conducted by DOE the week of January 28, Davis said.
Each of the eleven Levy County schools has facility
needs. They range from basic, such as additional
classrooms -to accommodate future growth, to critical,
such as administrative space and cafeteria inadequacies in
Chiefland and a replacement high school in Williston. The
board agreed with the needs assessment and discussed the
possibility of assigning some of the more crucial needs as
upcoming summer projects.
