Fire assessments Back to School Blues

taking the heat

BY CAROLYN RISNER
MANAGING EDITOR
Commercial property owners can expect to pay higher fire
assessments with their next tax bill, after the Levy County
Board of County Commissioners approved a significant in-
crease Tuesday.
While residential costs will increase some, it is the assess-
ment levied on commercial-property that has commissioners
scratching their heads.
"Business rates are my concern," said Commissioner Sam-
my Yearty. "It's hard on a little business in the county."
"Are you suggesting we trim it .back?" Danny Stevens
asked.
"No," Yearty answered. "I was just saying it bothers me."
Stevens then said he would suggest the assessment be
pared.
But Chiefland Fire Chief David Burnett, who sits on the
county's Fire Advisory Board, explained that the rate was
formulated after a study on which groups received the most
services.
Additionally, the county anticipates building two new fire
stations to serve an ever-expanding population. Burnett said
one will be located in the Manatee Springs area and the other
will be north of Williston.
The county had two options: start with a lower assessment
and notify property owners that it could cap out at a higher
rate within the five year period, or it could have assessed the
maximum now and not increase the fees later.
The commissioners were advised that whatever they decid-
ed, it had to be across the board, meaning all the assessments
would be one way or the other.
Residential rates would start out at $47 and cap out at $54.
It is the businesses that will pay though--as much as $495,
with all the assessments. based on the square footage of a
building.
Most buildings fall into the 2,000-3,500 square foot range,
Burnett said, and the ceiling on that size would be in the
neighborhood of $553. Business owners are currently paying Journal photo by Miriam Bltch
about a fifth of that amount. DUSTIN PATTERSON is so happy at home that he sees no reason to start
.Additionally, the county- has added industrial/warehouse kindergarten at Chiefland Elementary. He took comfort with Lana Thornton
and institution to its assessment structure. Institution will en- who assured him it wasn't as bad as it seemed. Dustin, like hundreds of other
Levy County children, headed back to the school room Tuesday. More pictures

With an excellent sense of
humor, a knack for solving
crimes and an attitude of
fairness for all, Chiefland's
J.C.- Corbin quickly became
the kind of law enforcement
officer that was well liked
and well respected.
Corbin, 84, died Aug. 2 and
was remembered fondly this
week by those closest to him.
Sammy Cason, a long-time
friend and colleague, said
Corbin, the city's former chief
of police, enjoyed having

someone sit with him in his

Bell Harrison who ran the
hardware store was also
Chiefland's mayor. Corbin
would make a case and often

take the perpetrator down
to the hardware store where
he would plead his case and
wait for a fine to be levied. "It
was a lot like Andy Griffith
and Mayberry," Cason said
Monday.
Corbin was also a man with
a love for a prank. Both Cason
and Corbin were deputies
under Sheriff Turner. When it
came time for new uniforms,
the sheriff ordered bill-caps
for the men. One night after
Cason sat with Corbin in his
car, he noticed his cap was
missing. He searched high

and low for it and it wasn't
until three days later that he
found it.
Stepping to the back of his
car, Corbin asked his friend
if he'd ever found his cap.
When Cason replied he had
not, Corbin popped the trunk
and there it lay. Corbin had
found the cap in the seat of
the car after Cason had left
but never told him he had
found it, letting the younger
man spend a rough three
days looking for the part that
would complete his uniform.

was when Cason was giving
chase to some folks who had
escaped from the county jail.
Following them onto Eight-
Mile Hill, one of the men
managed to get a round off
and into Cason who was near
a palmetto stand.
Not knowing how bad he
was injured, Cason told his
partner who was running the
dogs to come back to town
for help.
When he returned, J.C.
Corbin was with him.

CASSIE Nelson admires the t-shirt given to her by Jim Kraus, interim Refuge
manager.

Refuge bids YCC farewell--for now

BY PAM DARTY
LSNWR
Each summer, the Lower Suwannee &
Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuges, part
of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, employ
four high school students as the Youth
Conservation Corps (YCC). The students
learn the every day workings of the wildlife
and land management agency from the inside
out rather than as mere observers.
After a full summer of learning about refuge,
work, this week they return to Chiefland
High School. During the many projects
they completed for the betterment of the
refuge, the YCC gained understanding of the
ecological, political and financial concerns
with'which refuge management must deal.
They also observed refuge staff working like
a well-oiled machine during emergencies like
wildfires and storms.
For a job well done, staff took the hard-
working YCC for an end-of-the-summer
luncheon. Afet'eran awards ceremony with
certificates of success presented by their
supervisor, Jason Coates, and closing words

of encouragement by Lower Suwannee's
interim Manager Jim Kraus, the group was
surprised by an announcement.
Restaurant owner Jimmy "Frog" visited the
table applauding the youth who performed
such intense work over the long hot summer.
He announced that Frog's Restaurant would
be providing a complimentary lunch for the
YCC who worked so diligently for the Lower
Suwannee during their summer break.
Kraus, having seen the YCC's work for the
three weeks he has been managing the refuge,
was so impressed that he presented them with
wildlife t-shirts and a gift bag from his refuge
friends group at the Chassahowitzka National
Wildlife Refuge.
"The refuge exposed the YCC to vast career
opportunities, how to be competitive when
applyingfor jobs, and through the work each
performed, they learned whatthey, as a team and
individually, are capable of accomplishing,"
said program coordinator, Pam Qarty .. For
more information about the summer YCC
program or volunteer opportunities, call the
refuge at 493-0238, extension 223.

Bronson doesn't want overcrowding

Votes to limit floor time on some speakers

BY ASHLEY SHEWEY
CONTRIBUTING WRITER
A decision on the property line setback for Steve Smith
Construction, Inc., was postponed Monday at the town
of Bronson council meeting until compromises can be
discussed.
The property owner is requesting a variance from 20 feet
on each side of property to 7 V2 feet on both sides of property
for both lots owned.
Councilwoman Edith Brown expressed concern over the
possible passing of this ordinance, which would allow a 12 V2
foot reduction on the sides of both lots. She said this will put
neighboring lots on top of each other.
"You.can spit out your window and into someone else's,"
Brown said. "I don't want that for Bronson."
She added that if they adopted the ordinance for this
property, then they would have to do it for each similar lot.

Town Clerk Donna Conquest remarked that there are many
lots similar to the mentioned ones.
In other business, a motion was passed to update the town's
code of ordinances. According to Conquest, the code has not
been updated for 24 years the last time was in 1982.
Municipal Code Corporation out of Tallahassee will be
providing the republication material.
Conquest said the town has the option of including a feature
where the code can be viewed online. She said it will be free
for the first year and $400 each following year.
In other business:
Frank Schupp from Ameris Health Systems spoke to the
council abgut the proposed Tri-County Hospital and a motion
was passed to provide a letter of support from the town of
Bronson.
David Reinstra of the Bronson Volunteer Fire Department

in operations and business

explained to the council about the need for an upgrade in.
their radio system. The new proposed system will be 800
megahertz. He said this will help in the time of a disaster
and will allow them to communicate in a wider range. Each
mobile radio will cost $3,500 while each portable radio will
cost $1,500. Reinstra said they anticipate including five radios
in the trucks and 11 portable radios. He said the usage fee will
be approximately $85 per month.
The council decided that an ordinance needed to be adopted
about late fees for town water service. Mayor Beatrice Mongo
said they should adopt a policy similar to that of Williston
and Chiefland; five days after the late payment, the services
will be shut off. The town now allows two months before the
aforementioned action is taken. If the ordinance is adopted,
letters will be sent out notifying residents of the changes.

Mayor Mongo notified the council that the estimated water
revenue loss is the lowest it has been in three years.
A policy was adopted to limit the amount of time guests
have to speak. Guests will now have between three to five
minutes to speak and must be on the agenda. This applies
only to items requiring council action. The public comment
allotted time will not be affected.
The first reading of the ordinance pertaining to the minor
replat for Patricia Stone was passed.
The second reading of the'ordinance pertaining to the
Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Regulations
was passed.
The second reading of the ordinance pertaining to the
annexation of school board property where the new high
school is located was passed.
The tentative budget hearing for the town of Bronson will
be held Sept. 12. The final hearing will be Sept. 26. Both will
begin at 6 p.m. at Bronson Town Hall.

Quilters multi-task with projects, gazebo

BY WINNELLE HORNE
'CORRESPONDENT'
The Log Cabin Quilters
met Thursday, Aug. 3 at the
Levy County Quilt Museum.
The third quilt was put in
and quilting goes on. It is an
appliqued flower pattern and
will get lots of quilting on it.
Shirley Murphy has
finished a Double Irish Chain
andAutumn Leaves'.She does
beautiful work on everything
she does: B.J. has finished
two baby quilts and Peggy
Williams has hemmed several
tablecloths. There is always
so much to do and everyone
enjoys what they do.

Jarrod and 10 boys were
out Tuesday and once when
we looked, several of them
were enjoying the gazebo
we built. We are hanging
pictures inside and have put
posts around the front of it to
keep drivers from getting too
close.
It was an enjoyable time
for Pat, her husband, Al, and
me when we went to Camp
Caruth and gave the quilt to
Mike, the director. It will be
taken to Live Oak later to
be signed by sheriffs from
all around Florida as well as
others connected with the
youth camps.

. I think we will all be glad
to see cooler weather but we
all keep going and feel sorry
for some of the plants and
flowers. They will be glad for
cool weather.
Lunch was so good
with cabbage, fried okra,
macaroni salad, corn bread,

biscuits, spaghetti casserole,
green beans, potato salad,
cucumbers, deviled eggs,
cake and peaches. We had 13
members and two guests in
attendance.
Winnelle Home is the
director of the Levy County
Quilt Museum.

The desire to help others found her happiness

BY ASHLEY SHEWEY
CONTRIBUTING WRITER
It is in Sue Cicala's
nature to help people.
Throughout her life,
she has dedicated her time
and effort to improving the
lives of others.
Cicala, 81, loves to share
stories of her fulfilled life.'
She said she really cared
for each and every person
she ever helped. With her
variety ofjobs spanning
from waitressing, nursing
and eventually property
management, Cicala
remembers many moments
which made her work
worthwhile.
Growing up on her
family's farm in Fulton,
Tenn., proved hard for
Cicala to find her first job.
"I wanted to go to work
and I wasn't trained for
nothing except the farm,"
she said.
She decided to use the
skills she did have to her
advantage. She was used to
serving meals to her family,
so she decided a job in
waitressing might work.
By this time, at age 21,
Cicala had.been married and
had a son, Dwayne. When
she left her husband, she
was excited to find her first
job opportunity at a small,
family owned restaurant.
The owner did not mind
that Cicala had no experience
in serving and hired her on
the spot. She trained hard
and soon was getting offers
for employment from the
high class steak house down
the street.
After two months of
working with the restaurant,
Cicala left to work for
Smith's Steakhouse. She
said she ended up making
a lot more money at the.
steakhouse.
"That's one of the best
things I've ever did in my
life," she said.
Once her two older
brothers joined the service,
her father had to sell the
farm. Her parents moved to
Illinois and Cicala, along
with her son, followed.
She worked at a
department store when
she first arrived, but soon
realized that nursing was the
profession she wanted. She
went to nursing school and
graduated, getting a job at a
local hospital.
Cicala continued in
Illinois until she came down
with pneumonia in her mid-
30s. Her doctor ordered
her to take a vacation to a
warmer climate. He pointed
her in the direction of
Florida, setting her up in
an apartment complex in
Hollywood.
"He said, 'I want you to
take a vacation, go down
there and stay!'" Cicala said.

Shortly after arriving, the
manager of the complex she
was staying at was involved
in a car accident and needed
home care. Always one to
help, Cicala took the job and
decided to make Florida her
permanent residence.
Deciding to put her
nursing and people skills
to the test, Cicala became a
nurse at Community South
Broward Hospital. She.
continued there for 10 years,
touching many people's lives
throughout that time.
She recalls one of her
first patients at the hospital
was an elderly woman who
had been comatose for four
months due to a stroke.
"I made sure she ate, I
took care of her, "Cicala
said. "I had her complete
care the whole time she was
there."
One morning as Cicala
came into work, the night
shift nurse exclaimed that
she had great news.
"She said, 'That patient of
yours that's been comatose
all these months she came-
out of it! She can talk!'"
Cicala said.
The first thing that the
patient asked for was the
nurse that had been taking
care of her. That happened to
be Cicala.
"She recognized my
voice," Cicala said. "I'went
over and she had to hug me."
Cicala said the staff
thought the woman did not
remember anything, but the
real problem was she just
couldn't communicate.
SCicala said the patient
thanked her for being so
good to her.
"It was so heartwarming,'
she said. "It was so unreal
to have gone through all of
that."* .. -. ,.
Cicala was so dedicated to
helping people, she met her
second husband while on the
job.
She recalls that the day
they met, it was under
extraordinary circumstances.
She was called up to direct
the CCU unit on the fourth
floor, something she did not
usually do.
Her first patient was in
room 427, which she found
interesting since her birthday
was April 27 (4/27). She
said the patient was put on
bed rest. However, when she
entered the room, the bed
was empty.
She said she called for him
by his first name, Gabriel,
because she could not
pronounce his last name. He
quickly came out and told
her he was in the bathroom.
"I said, 'Your doctor said
you're on absolute bed rest
and you're not supposed to
be in the bathroom. Do you
understand that?'" Cicala
said.

SUE AND GABE CICALA remember fondly the cir-
cumstances of their first meeting.

Her patient said, "I had to
go to the bathroom, so I got
up and went. I'm going back
in there to shave later."
Cicala explained how she
was going to have to make
him stay in bed, or the doctor
would be highly upset. She
gave him some incentive
by telling him that if he' C
promised not to leave the
bed, she would come back
and shave him later. Cicala
said he promised, but is
unsure if he held up his end

of the bargain. The patient
asked for her telephone
number and before she left
the room, she gave it to him,
knowing that she would be
moving arid have a new one
in a few weeks time. She
figured he would never find

She was unable to return
back to his room that day,
due to being so busy. It

remember their conversation.
She asked him how in the
world he could have gotten
her new phone number. He
said he called the old one
and they gave him the new
one.
"I said, 'Oh, well they're
handing it out like pancakes,
huh?'" Cicala said.
That's when he came back
and said, "Well, I didn't call
you for pancakes. I would
like to take you out."
Four years later on Jan 23,
they were married.
"It was meant to be that I
was pulled up on that floor
that day," Cicala said.
The couple moved to
Savannah, Ga. where Cicala
worked at St. Joseph's
Hospital. She worked there
for four months until her
mother grew sick. Cicala and
her husband, Gabe, moved to
Illinois to take care of her.
"I told myself, as long as
she's alive, I'm going to be
with her," she said.
After her mother passed
away, they moved back to
Savannah, but she was not
happy. She was not even
happy with nursing any
longer.
"After I lost my mother,
every time I'd have an
elderly patient, it would get
to me," Cicala said. "I would
go into the restroom and
bawl."
So the couple moved
back to Florida to be close
to family. That is when
they first entered the Levy

County area. It was time for
a change, so Cicala and her
husband took on the task
of managing the Bronson
Villas, an apartment complex
in Bronson.
Her eagerness to help
people did not stop in the
nursing profession. She still
managed to find ways to
assist the families and lives
of her tenants.
"You'd be surprised at all I
did," Cicala said.
She would often help her
renters with money issues.
The company that owned the
complex would inflict a $10
fee on every late payment.
Cicala did not agree with
this method and helped the
tenants any way that she
could.
"The deadline would be
on a Monday," Cicala said,
"apd some of them wouldn't
get paid until Friday. You'd
be surprised at how many
checks I wrote myself for
those kids."
She said they would
always pay her back as well.
"I became grandma to all
of the kids and mama to all
of the tenants," she said..
Cicala and her husband
enjoyed 18 years of
management until they
decided to retire and move
to Chiefland,, where they
currently live. She enjoyed
every moment of her life and,
is glad that she got to help so
many people.
"I really cared for all of
them," she said.

Getting in the last laugh a

I M y partner
/I Derek let
S I loose on a
los o rant recently,
blabbing his big mouth about
what a great bass fishing
team he and I made. I just sat
there smiling, so agreeable;
until he started challenging
my dad and my brother
Heath to a contest! My face
went pale.
"Bragging rights will
hang in the balance," he
continued. I kicked him
under the table. Derek was
full of hot air and that wasn't
likely to tip the scales in our
favor.
I've never out-fished my
dad. I had no doubt he
could stop at a pothole
along the way and dangle
out a safety pin from an
old broom stick and win the
deal. I straightened up just in
time to meet my dad's gaze.
"Yeah," I heard something
say from inside of me,.
"You guys won't stand a
chance." It was my voice.
I wish somebody would
come up with a cure for this
testosterone stuff.
As 'if e needed another
witness to our pending
humiliation, Derek invited
our work buddy Keith to go
along. It only added to my
apprehension.
"I warned ya'll about
my boat, didn't I?" I asked.
"Yeah, about 10 times,"
Derek answered, "We'll be
all right. It got us most of the
way back last time."
We shoved off and to my
surprise it cranked right up
the first try. Yes! We'd be
getting a much needed head
start on my dad's fancy
new boat. I put the hammer
down, but it just gasped,
choked and sputtered off
lamely hitting on just one
cylinder.
"Did you change out the
gas from last year?" Derek
asked.
"Just shut up," I replied. I
had the cover off the motor
and was sweating profusely
by the time my dad and
Heath barreled past us.

BUT A

Guy E.

Thirty minutes later we
puttered up to find them
wrangling a big bass out
of my secret spot. I jutted
my jaw.out in protest and
refused to look. I kept
going. I knew another little
honey hole on down. Within
minutes we ran aground.
"The water level is down a
mite since my last trip," I
said sheepishly.
We managed to re-float
her and turned back around
and began fishing my dad's
leftovers. There weren't
many. By lunch we had
boated one little throw-back.
I finally suggested we try the
other end of the lake.
"What do we have to
lose?" Derek shrugged.
Heath had the net out
scooping another one of
my dad's big bass when
we puttered back by. I
didn't hear them laugh, but
sometimes you just know.
The wind was whipping
up pretty strong down on
that other end and I had more
than a little hesitation as
we passed back by the boat
ramp. I saw a promising little
spot and let down the trolling
motor. Apparently it had
other plans. It let me down
and gave up the ghost.
"Did you charge the
battery up," Derek asked.
"Just shut up," I said. As
the wind swept us on down
further from the boat ramp I
thought about crying, but I
held off.
"Let's see if we can get
the motor cranked with the
pull rope," I said, praying
silently. It cranked right up
the first try. Yes! "Let's go
on down a little further and
try to get out of this wind,"
I suggested. I had more
than a little hesitation as we
'p

LNYWAY puttered off.
We got to
the far end of
the lake. The
wind was a
little better,
but we ran
aground
Sheffield again.
"I guess
the water
level is down
a mite," I said sheepishly.
That's when Keith opened
his mouth for the first time
that trip, "Let's just get back
to the boat ramp while we
still' can." He must have
been saving all his wisdom
for that moment because it
sounded liked the best plan.
yet. I went to yank on that
pull rope and it just went
slack. Some little spring
popped out and hit Derek
in the back of the head.
The pull start had given up
the ghost. I thought about
crying again, but then I
saw the other two were
snickering and I just busted
out laughing. They followed
suit. There, a mile from the
boat ramp facing 30 mph
winds I finally got my cry;
but it was from chuckling
so hard. Thanks goodness
for cell phones. Daddy and
Heath said they'd come get
us once they had caught their
limit. Ten minutes later they
rolled up in that new boat
with a cooler full offish. I
didn't see them laughing, but
sometimes you just know.

I'm so glad the Lord is
teaching me to weather the
storms differently than I used
to. He said, In the world
ye shall have tribulation.
but be of good cheer; I
have overcome the world.
John 16:33. It's a good
thing Jesus doesn't fall off
the throne and go to biting
His fingernails every time
I go up the creek without a
paddle. In the big scheme
of things I can trust that my
light afflictions are but for
a moment. I can keep my
cheer.
Nehemiah knew the way
to.victory. Then he said unto
them, Go your way, eat the
fat, and drink the sweet, and
send portions unto them for
whom nothing is prepared:
for this day is holy unto our
LORD: neither be ye sorry;
for the jo of the LORD is
your strength. Nehemiah
8:10.
But anyway, whether
you're riding high in a fancy
new boat full of fish or
whether you're stranded in
an old boat full of goofballs,
trust in the Lord. He is the
one who can give you the
ultimate victory. Maybe now
I can't see God getting the
last laugh on my behalf, but
sometimes you.just know.

Buffing up while they're growing

Is your son obsessed with bodybuilding?

BY ASHLEY SHEWEY
CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Like any mother, Kathy
Lawson worries about her
son. She constantly reminds
him to do his homework. She
demands to meet the friends
he hangs out with. She
enforces chores, along with
weeknight curfews.
But lately, her son has
given Lawson something else
to.worry about: his obsession
with his muscles.
"I worry that he works out
too much," Lawson said of
her 15 year-old son, Brandon.
"I tell him so and he just says,
'Oh, mom!"'
Lawson settles her 5'3
frame into a large plastic
chair. Her size 7 black
Reeboks barely brush the
floor. She says her son began
working out because he felt
smaller than all of his friends.
She attributes his small
size to inheriting the family
trait. With her husband only
measuring to a "just average"
height of5'8, Lawson thought
Brandon never had a chance
for his peers to stand in his
shadow.
"I thought he was just
going to be tiny all the time,"
Lawson said, "but dang,
you should see his muscles
now!"
Lawson is surprised at how
much her "little" boy has
changed.
Several months ago
Brandon's 110 pound body
began frequenting the gym.
Now, after hours of pumping
iron and sipping on protein
shakes; he weighs "in at
approximately 150 pounds.
And Brandon is not alone.
Body image is a growing
concern for males in this
country. More and more,
younger boys are getting into
the workout scene, bulking
up and downing the body
enhancers for no other reason
than trying to fit the desirable
male image. Many families do
not realize the problems that
over-exercising and dietary
supplements can cause for
their sons.
The obsession with body'
image in America has begun
to infiltrate into the younger
crowd. According to- Dr.
Harrison Pope, Dr. Katherine
Phillips, and Dr. Roberto
Olivardia, the authors of the
book The Adonis Complex,
American boys are the
highest at risk when it comes
to body dissatisfaction. The
doctors' studies concluded
that boys of all ages, from 11
to 17, chose a body ideal that
possessed about 35 pounds
more muscle than they
actually have themselves.
This means that a majority of
boys chose a body ideal that
most men could attain only
with steroids.
The doctors' studies found
that the generation of boys
today are at a higher risk than
ever before.
"Many boys in this new
generation, unable to achieve
their unrealistic ideal body
through hard work and
healthy eating habits, may
turn to anabolic steroids or
other dangerous substances to
satisfy their aspirations," the
book stated. "Others...may
suffer devastating damage
to their self-esteem and their
physical and emotional well-
being."
The doctors found that
this practice of young men
over exercising and taking
performance enhancers has
become very common.
Lawson said Brandon
works out four to five times
a week. She is glad he is
keeping in shape but thinks
he should spend less time at

the gym.
,

Brandon doesn't
play any organized
sports. He works
out to maintain
a muscular
physique.
"Girls and
muscles are his
only motivations,"
Lawson said with
a laugh.
According to
Lawson, Brandon
is not alone in
this workout
regimen. All of
his friends take
part in the same
kind of strenuous
activities.
"I think all of
the mothers worry about their
boys and if they are over-
doing it," Lawson said.
On the other hand, Brandon
sees nothing wrong with his
routine.
"Exercising is very
important to me," Brandon
said. "It keeps me in good
health, but most of all, makes
me look good."
Brandon's body balloons
under 'his t-shirt. A few
months ago, his closet was
full of small shirts. Now he
must wear a large, due to his
bulging muscles under the
fabric.
His body is that of an older
man, while his face looks the
age it is supposed to. Brown
hair and bright blue. eyes
grace his childlike face while
everything below the neck
looks as though, it should,
belong o'n someone elise
Someone older.
Although Brandon has
gained approximately 40
pounds, he is striving to gain
more.
"I need to look bigger and
gain more weight than this,"
he said.
Aesthetical Aspirations
Karen Coley-Cannon,
membership and corporate
director of Gainesville Health
and Fitness Centers, said it
is becoming increasingly
popular for young men to
exercise for appearance
purposes rather than health
reasons.
Coley-Cannon attributed
underage boys striving for a
perfect body to hormones.
"At that age, they are just
getting interested in girls,"
she said. "If girls are involved,
which somewhere in there
hormones are happening,
then they're going to want the
aesthetically pleasing thing,
not just the healthy thing. All
they'want is a chest."
Supplements and Side
Effects
Bigger concern than over-
exercising for Lawson and
other mothers is the rising
popularity of supplement
usage in young males.
Brandon takes the
supplement known as
creatine. Lawson said he stirs
the white powder. in a fruit
punch drink every day during
his regimen.
Lawson said Brandon
noticed a bigger difference
in the amount of muscle
he gained than from just
exercising alone.
"It took about a month for
him to start seeing results,"
Lawson said.
Lawson said the results
were rapid muscle growth,
increased energy and weight
gain.
Lawson said that her
research on the supplement
has shown that creatine
pulls excess water out of the
muscle, allowing Brandon to
gain muscle mass in a shorter
period of time, making
his workouts fat more
dangerous.

Paul Doering, professor of:
pharmacy at the University of
Florida, has conducted studies
on creatine and researched
the effects it may cause.
He said creatine does not
have to be approved by the
FDA in order to be on the
market.
"Creatine is considered
to be a dietary supplement,
not a pharmaceutical drug,"
,Doeringsaid."Pharmaceutical
drugs have to be approved;
dietary supplements don't.
The only test is the test of
time."
Doering said that creatine
is a chemical found within
the human body, usually
concentrated in organs such
as the liver. He said it is a
storage form of energy.
"It's like a battery for extra
energy," he said.- "When-
talki "'s a supplehient, it
allows users to exercise more
strenuously and recover more
quickly."
Doering thinks the
supplement may work for
healthy athletes, but remains
cautious for long term use.
"I think it works but
many people heap too many
praises," he said. "I don't
think I'm ready to mortgage
my future on it."
He said although users will
see quick results, the quality
and quantity of creatine is
not equal to pharmaceutical
drugs.
Doering is especially
concerned when it comes
to young men using the
supplement.
"Their body is still growing
and evolving," he said. "There
is no evidence against it, but
the whole concept is bad."
Doering said the worst part
for young men is the mindset
that evolves from taking
performance enhancing
supplements.
"It is bad for a young
person's life," he said. "It
teaches them to take the easy
way out and that all you got
to do is augment it [body]
with a chemical."
Doering became so
involved in his research that
he even participated in an
experiment himself.
During a study on the
effects ofcreatine on the body
for athletes, Doering took the
supplement for two weeks
and gained eight pounds.
"I didn't even look at a
dumbbell or weight machine,"
he said.
With his lack of activity,
Doering concluded that the
weight he gained was water
weight, which he lost shortly
after he discontinued the
supplement.
"People who use creatine
spend money on it, knowing
that they have to combine
it with the gym," he said.
"It creates a placebo effect
because without it, they
may have gotten the same
gain. Young men go through
growth spurts anyhow."
Colin Forrestel, manager

of a General
Nutrition Center,
said that creatine
is among
the top three
supplements sold
in the store. He
said it contributes
to 70% of all
products sold.
"It is the only
one that is proven
to have an impact
on athletic
performance,"
Forrestel said.
I He said GNC
stores began
carrying the
supplement
when it was first
introduced on the market in
the 1970s. However, Forrestel
said 1923 is when researchers
began experimenting with
how the substance reacted
with the body.
He said when it was
originally introduced in the
70s, it wasn't as popular as
it has become. He said the
health craze of the late 80s
and early 90s is what got
people interested.
"There was a. huge
explosion of growth in
popularity," he said. "Now
practically everyone and their
grandma takes creatine."
When it comes to workout
supplements, Coley-Cannon
advises young men to stay
away from all of them.
Her niece's boyfriend
is a prime example: He
plays football, lifts weights,
and "stacks" to help his
performance.
Coley-Cannon said
stacking is a form of taking
performance enhancing
supplements on top of each
other.
"He goes through his

cabinet and goes, 'Karen,
what do you think about this
[supplements]'? And I go
through and say 'don't take
this, don't take this' and I just
throw everything out!'"
Supplements, or ergo-
genetic aids, as Coley-Cannon
calls them, are often too much
of a good thing and prevents
your body from breaking all
the supplements down.
With creatine in particular,
Coley-Cannon has noticed the
users often suffer hamstring
pulls, muscle cramps and
spasms.
"I'm amazed because if
you read all these muscle
books, they always push
their supplements," she said.
"That's how they make their
money."
Coley-Cannon said that
younger men who are just
starting to work out need
to steer away from the
supplements and naturally
gain strength.
"All ergo-genetic stuff
has high risks--they're very
costly and the results are
negligible," she said. "So
why spend all the money and
put it into your body?"
Coley-Cannon said that
girls are just as bad as boys
when it comes to taking
supplements, such as herbal
aids or Hydroxycut, to speed
up their weight loss, but they
try to hide it.
"Guys are more open
because they think those
certain things are cool to
take," she said.
According to The Adonis
Complex, the doctors found
that supplements taken in
small amounts or for a limited
period of time probably aren't
dangerous. However, their
studies show that most boys
do try and reach their fitness

goals in the shortest possible
amount of time, exposing
them to large dosages over
long periods. This may lead
to many dangers, although
most of the serious ones are
still unknown to the medical
community.
This makes supplements
such as creatine a risky choice
when health professionals are
unsure of the consequences.
"Judging from the amount
that some of these kids are
buying, they've got to be
taking a lot more than it says
on the label," the doctors
found.
Cautious Continuation
Brandon continues to push
himself further in the gym
every day. He sets goals just
like any teenager, although
his almost always deal with
his body.
"I want to be able to bench
210 [pounds] by the end ofmy
sophomore year," he said.
Lawson continues to
monitor her son's supplement
intake to make sure it does
not get out of hand. She
said she sees no harm from
the creatine right now but is
cautious about what it will
do in the future.
"What it's going to do later
and the side effects is what
worries me," Lawson said.
Lawson now insists that
Brandon use the supplemental
in less frequent intervals--30
days on, 30 days off.
This system helps ease
Lawson's mind a little.
However, .her research on;
creatine has enlightened her
to the way it functions in the

body and she still worries
about the health effects on
her son.
"It dries the water out of
his muscles--that's what
concerns me," she said.

Landscaping

the front entry
BY CHARLIE NARDOZZI
Whether it's ajob interview,
buying a car or going on a date,
first impressions mean a lot. :
When it comes to making a,
good first impression with your
home, the area to focus on is
the front entryway. A well-land-
scaped entryway sets a welcom-
ing tone and adds value to your
home.
Jonathan Bardzik, of the
American Nursery and Land-
scape Association, says effec-
tive landscaping adds 8 to 15
percent to the value of your
home. "A well-landscaped front
entryway beautifies your yard,
inspiring neighbors to do the
same," he says.
Landscaping doesn't have
to be elaborate or expensive to
be welcoming. Here are some
design ideas that can help you
create a beautiful entryway to
your home:
Create a walkway wide.
enough for two people to walk
side by side to your house.
There's comfort in numbers!
Evaluate the exposure
of your front entryway. Is it
windy,,open toithe rain, surnnv ,
or shady? These, environmental
factors can determine what you
can grow.
Instead of a direct path to
your front door, consider creat-
ing a winding path that adds
a sense of excitement and in-
trigue. Plant in layers along the
front entryway. Place the tallest
shrubs near the house, medium-
sized shrubs in the middle and
lower growing ground covers,
perennials and annuals in the
front.
Think about the structures
you have or want to have
around your front entryway.
These could include an arbor or
trellis for vines to climb.
Charlie Nardozzi, a nation-
ally recognized garden writer,
book author, speaker and ra-
dio and television personality
who has appeared on HGTV,
PBS and Discovery Channel.,

RECYCLE. IT'S YOUR FUTURE.

Water issues and property rights must be balanced and
acted on in ways that both respect our heritage, now and look
forward to a Levy County our children and their children will know
after us. I want to do more than know and talk about these issues -
I want to continue to work and lead to resolve them.

Welcome to Bronson High School

BY CAROLYN RISNER
MANAGING EDITOR
No one was happier to see
the new Bronson High School
than Valerie Boughanerit, its
principal.
"The Eagle certainly has
landed," Boughanem said
last week at the school's open
house.
Students will be able to
look forward to new curricu-
lum enhancements that will
complement the exterior, she
promised, and will be edu-
cated in a safe and secure en-
vironment. The school is also
beginning the accreditation
process, Boughanem added.
"You know that future
citizens of Levy County will
have the resources to get an
education," said Rep. Will
Kendrick. "This is a job well
done."
Community and county
leaders were praised for their
efforts that got the funding
that allowed the school's
doors to open to students this
week.

WANDA JOHNSON, the school's health aide,

Aug. 22 and Chairwoman
Nancy Bell said she wanted
them to be as explicit as pos-
sible so citizens will know
exactly what they are facing.
"Be clear," Bell said. "I
don't like the public not
knowing."
She also presented the ar-
gument that if the commis-
sioners were having a diffi-
cult time understanding the
technicalities, how would the
public understand it.
Burnett said the Fire Advi-
sory Committee wanted to do
a presentation for the public
so it could understand better.
A public hearing is sched-
uled for Sept., 12.
On the flip side, the EMS
assessment fee will remain
the same at $75 per building.

SCorbin
Continued from front
Cason said he was a bigger
man then, about 240 pounds,
and Corbin minced no words
after assessing the situation.
"I'm going to shoot you
myself if I tote you out of
here and there is nothing
wrong with you," he told his
friend.
"And in his crude,
unorthodox way," Cason said.
"he could solve a case quicker
than anyone else. It was a
gift he had. He operated off
memory and had an intuition
for investigations."
Cason said deputies
worked a typical 10 hour shift
most days, but Corbin was
' relentless in his investigations
and would often stake out
places long after his shift was
over.
Corbin was also known to
rule his own style of justice
where young people were
involved.
Carroll Lewis had a sweet
49 Chevy with dual exhausts
and cut-outs, Cason said.
Lewis liked to get into town,
shift into second gear and let
the exhausts make their own
music as he cruised down
Main Street.
The noise was a bit much
for Corbin, who pulled the
youngster aside and told him
if he didn't stop he was going
to take him home to his daddy.
The noisy cruising stopped.
With one traffic light in
town, Corbin liked to sit and
wait for people to run the
red light, Cason said. There
wasn't much traffic in those
days and a lot of people didn't
think it was a big deal to run
the light. Corbin thought
differently and Cason said
most of the revenue the city
received was from running
that light.
"J.C. knew everybody,"
Cason said. "He was a friend
to all."

Corbin is survived by
his wife, Myra, and three
children.
A complete obituary
appears on page 7.
