Principal Trey Hosford was watching local trapper Scott McCauley try to corner the gator on Wednesday afternoon when he realized he needed to go to the tennis courts to see the schools match at 4 p.m. As he got there, the team was finishing up its senior pictures. Then, he said, a few of the kids started yelling. He looked back over to see McCauley wrestling the six-foot alligator to the ground. Cameron McCauley, Scotts son who works with him as a trapper, said they have been busy the last few days because of warm temperatures, floodwater and the fact that it is currently breeding season. Theyre very active [right now], Cameron said. He also said people shouldnt be worried and should just call the FWC SNAP Alligator Hotline if they come across a gator at 1-866-392-4286 (1-866-FWC-GATOR). Hosford said he just wants students to know not to mess with alligators if they come across them. If we see one, well continue to call the hotline and have them come remove it, he said. I dont think anybodys at risk on this campus because of gators.Gator wrestled to the ground and caught on CHS campus Since the fractures were in different healing stages of healing, they could not have been caused by a sin gle event, according to the report. The case is still under investigation, Bujeda said. Nuam, who now lives in Jacksonville, was arrested in Lake City in October 2014 after investigators said her two-year-old son had been physically abused. Lake City Police Department officers saw bruises, abrasions and marks covering the boys body, according to an arrest report. Nuam claimed her son may have accidentally injured himself, but upon further investigation, the injuries were due to non acciden tal trauma. Nuams son was taken from her and she was sen tenced to a single years probation period for contributing to the depen dency of a minor, court records show. Her proba tion had been scheduled to end on April 3. Florida Department of Children and Families Communication Manager John Harrell said officials are currently looking into the familys past living con ditions in Lake City. No other children are in the home, he added. Nuam is currently being held at Duval County jail on $500,000 bond. where the shelter is. So she decided to plan a day full of activities to bring the community down Northwest Shelter Glen, where she and volunteers can educate them. Microchipping pets, spaying and neutering, vaccines and training are all important topics that can easily get overlooked, Miller said. The shelter will have informational stations set up so locals can learn about best practices and collect resources through information packets. Were trying to be as informative as we can, but have fun as well, Miller said. The day will kick off with an Easter egg hunt at 11 a.m. Then attendees can play games, win prizes, eat hot dogs, bid on raffle items, or get their face painted. The activities will continue until 6 p.m. The event entry is free, but proceeds from the activities and food fees all go back to the shelter. The nonprofit relies heavily on community support. Oftentimes Miller posts a list of needed items on the organizations Facebook page so people can help. Items they use every day like collars, leashes and cages can quickly add up. Our wish list is our life line, she said. Miller said she hopes the vent raises awareness for the local shelter and encourages local residents to get involved. CHARGESContinued From 1A EVENTContinued From 1Arestored within 40 minutes. FPL had to completely replace one pole, leaving 258 people without power until about 11 a.m. After that, Orlove said, everyone had their power restored. Cindy Elsenheimer, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, said despite the high winds and heavy rains around 2 a.m. Thursday, Lake City didnt see much rainfall overall. Measurements around town only indicated about a quarter-inch of rain during the latest storm. Columbia County Emergency Management Director Shayne Morgan said the county saw five to nine inches of rain earlier in the week. According to AccuWeather.com, Lake City should expect clear skies this weekend with highs in the 70s and 80s. POWERContinued From 1A deputies found a small bag of methamphetamine in a purse along with a used syringe and a plastic straw with residue. Hughes said that the purse, which was near where she was sitting, belonged to her along with the meth, according to the report. Hughes was arrested and taken to Columbia County Jail. She is currently being held on $11,000 bond. The passenger was given a verbal warn ing for not wearing a seatbelt. METHContinued From 1A Nursing homes, hospice dropped from con repealTALLAHASSEE In a victory for nursing-home and hospice groups, a House committee Thursday scaled back a bill aimed at repealing controversial regulations on building health-care facilities. A change approved by the House Health & Human Services Committee will ensure continuation of the certificate of need regulatory process for nursing homes and hospice programs. The bill (HB 7) still includes repealing certificates of need for hospitals long a priority of House Republican leaders and Gov. Rick Scott. Groups such the Florida Health Care Association, which represents nursing homes, and the Florida Hospice & Palliative Care Association have argued for weeks that the certificate-of-need, or CON, process is important for their industries and that they should be excluded from the repeal bill. For example, the nursing-home group contended that repealing the regulations on building new facilities would lead to more empty beds in long-established nursing homes, affecting the operations of those homes. Weve been saying all along that managed growth is important to making sure nursing centers are built in areas where they are most needed, Kristen Knapp, a spokeswoman for the Florida Health Care Association, said after the committee approved the change Thursday. The decades-old CON process requires hospitals, nursing homes and hospice providers to seek approval from the state Agency for Health Care Administration before they can add new facilities and, at least in some cases, new programs. The process often leads to litigation about whether new facilities should get approval. Scott and House Republican leaders have focused in recent years on repealing the process for hospitals and expanded the idea to nursing homes and hospice providers during this years legislative session. After making the change Thursday, the Health & Human Services Committee voted 12-5 to approve repealing certificates of need for hospitals. Bill sponsor Alex Miller, R-Sarasota, said the regulations on new facilities restrict competition and do not control costs. Hospital-industry groups have fought a repeal, though they did not speak during Thursdays meeting. In part, they argue that eliminating certificates of need could lead to more hospitals being built in affluent areas, drawing away insured patients from established hospitals, including safety-net hospitals that treat large numbers of uninsured and Medicaid-funded patients. The Senate has balked in past years at repealing the certificate-of-need process and has not taken up a repeal bill (SB 676) this session. After the Health & Human Services Committee scaled back the House bill Thursday, Chairman Travis Cummings, R-Orange Park, asked Florida Health Care Association chief lobbyist Bob Asztalos about the nursing-home groups view of the revised bill. We love the amendment, Asztalos responded, drawing laughs from lobbyists and other people in the committee room. The News Service of Florida Scott FIND WHAT YOU NEED IN TODAYS CLASSIFIEDS

The House Appropriations Committee voted overwhelmingly, 24-2, to pass that chambers (PCB APC 17-01) $81.2 billion proposal for the fiscal year that begins July 1. Six Democrats joined committee Republicans to approve the legislation, while two Democrats opposed it. The Senate Appropriations Committee unanimously backed that chambers legisla tion (SPB 2500), which officially weighs in at $83.2 billion. However, the Senate doesnt include almost $2 billion in higher-educa tion tuition in its plan, while the House does meaning the two chambers differences are about twice as large as the bottom line suggests. Both committees also approved a slate of budget-related bills, often but not always by lopsided margins. Some of the discussions and scuffles over the plan were about relatively small amounts of money in hot-button areas. Senators suggested they were looking for a compromise on a pro posed $1.3 million cut to the budget of State Attorney Aramis Ayala, who was elected last year as the top prosecutor in Orange and Osceola counties. Ayala recently announced she would not pursue the death penalty in capital punish ment cases, drawing criticism from state Republican leaders and prompting Scott to shift 22 cases away from her office. Lawmakers say the budget cut would account for the fact that Ayalas office wouldnt be handling those cases. But Kamilah Perry, Ayalas chief of staff, said her office is covering many of the costs of the transferred cases. And she said the cut would actually affect efforts to combat human trafficking. Less than 1 percent of all of our cases are death penalty, so the case load is not going to be (reduced) that much, Perry said. An amendment that would have restored the money proposed by Criminal Justice Chairman Randolph Bracy, D-Orlando was withdrawn after Senate Appropriations Chairman Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater, prom ised to look for a compromise. I think one thing thats clear is, none of us really know exactly how these costs are going to break down, and how we can cor rectly apportion them. ... I dont want to be responsible for lessening our enforcement in human trafficking, Latvala said. However, the chairman conceded later that he didnt yet have a firm idea on how to reach a compromise, saying he had been in the meeting all day and hadnt gotten time to work on it. In all, senators dealt with more than 100 amendments to the budget plan, most of which were approved with little discussion. There were fewer amendments in the House, though some Democrats com plained about the proposed level of spending on public education and cuts to funding for hospitals. Before a spending plan even gets to Gov. Rick Scott, though, lawmakers have to work out the differences between the two chambers versions. In addition to differences on spending for public education, higher education and health care, the two sides are far apart on state employee salary increases. Bracy US Senate goes nuclear, clears way for Trump court pick By ERICA WERNERAssociated PressWASHINGTON Republicans invoked the nuclear option in the Senate Thursday, unilaterally rewriting the chambers rules to allow President Donald Trumps nominee to ascend to the Supreme Court. Furious Democrats objected until the end, but their efforts to block Judge Neil Gorsuch failed as expected. Lawmakers of both parties bemoaned the long-term implications for the Senate, the court and the country. We will sadly point to today as a turning point in the history of the Senate and the Supreme Court, said Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York. The maneuvering played out in an atmosphere of tension in the Senate chamber with most senators in their seats, a rare and theatrical occurrence. First Democrats mounted a filibuster in an effort to block Gorsuch by denying him the 60 votes needed to advance to a final vote. Then Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky raised a point of order, suggesting that Supreme Court nominees should not be subjected to a 60-vote threshold but instead a simple majority in the 100-member Senate. McConnell was overruled, but appealed the ruling. And on that he prevailed on a 52-48 party line vote. The 60-vote filibuster requirement on Supreme Court nominees was effectively gone, and with it the last vestige of bipartisanship on presidential nominees in an increasingly polarized Senate. A final confirmation vote on Gorsuch is expected today and he could then be sworn in in time to take his seat on the court later this month and hear the final cases of the term. The maneuvering played out with much hand-wringing from all sides about the future of the Senate, as well as unusually bitter accusations and counter-accusations as each side blamed the other. The rules change is known as the nuclear option because of its far-reaching implications. McConnell accused Democrats of forcing his hand by trying to filibuster a highly qualified nominee in Gorsuch, 49, a 10-year veteran of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver with a consistently conservative record. McConnell vowed that the rules change would block the Gorsuch filibuster, and all future ones, a change many lawmakers lamented could lead to an even more polarized Senate, court and country. This will be the first, and last, partisan filibuster of a Supreme Court nominee, McConnell declared. This is the latest escalation in the lefts never-ending judicial war, the most audacious yet, and it cannot and will not stand. Supreme Court filibusters have been nearly unheard of in the Senate, but the confrontation is playing out amid an explosive political atmosphere with liberal Democrats furious over the Trump presidency and Republicans desperate to get a win after months of chaos from Trump. Democrats also remain livid over McConnells decision last year to deny consideration to then-President Barack Obamas Supreme Court nominee, Judge Merrick Garland, who was ignored for the better part of a year by Senate Republicans after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. Instead, McConnell kept Scalias seat open, a calculation that is now paying off hugely for Republicans and Trump, who will be able to claim the biggest victory of his presidency to date if Gorsuch is confirmed as expected. We believe that what Republicans did to Merrick Garland was worse than a filibuster, Schumer said. Emotions were running high ahead of the votes with raised voices on the floor where proceedings are normally sedate. All involved were keenly aware of the long-term implications of the proceedings, some of them hard to predict for the future of Trumps presidency and the 2018 midterm elections, when Republicans will be defending their slim 52-48 Senate majority and 10 vulnerable Democrats in states Trump won will be up for re-election. Senators on both sides of the aisle lamented the trajectory they were on, though they themselves were in position to prevent it from happening and failed to do so. Moderate Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine said roughly 10 senators of both parties worked over the weekend to come up with a deal to stave off the nuclear option, but couldnt come to agreement. In 2005, a bipartisan deal headed off GOP plans to remove the filibuster barrier for lower-court nominees, but in 2013 Democrats took the step, leaving the filibuster in place only for Supreme Court justices. Now it too is gone. For now the filibuster barrier on legislation will remain, though many fear it could be the next to go. I fear that someday we will regret what we are about to do. In fact, I am confident we will, said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. It is imperative we have a functioning Senate where the rights of the minority are protected regardless of which party is in power at the time. Nonetheless, McCain voted with McConnell on the rules change, saying he felt he had no choice. With the final vote set for today, Gorsuch counts 55 supporters in the Senate: the 52 Republicans, along with three moderate Democrats from states that Trump won last November Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Donnelly of Indiana. OLIVIER DOULIERY/Tribune News ServiceSupreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch speaks in the East Room of the of White House as President Donald Trump and Gorsuchs wife Marie Louise look on. Gorsuch may be confirmed today.

There I was, riding with some friends, ready to enjoy a nice dinner at our favorite restaurant. We always enjoy fun conversation at these get-togethers. But today, the discussion became political. For the most part, we contributed ideas or threw fuel on the fire representing one side, or along political party lines. We offered examples and stories about how good one party was, and ended up bashing the other party. I realized that our open discussion made us even more polarized than before. On TV recently I saw a story about a Bipartisan Car Pool. It turns out that two U.S. Representatives from Texas, Will Hurd (Republican) and D. ORourke (Democrat), couldnt get a flight to Washington, D.C. because of snowstorms in the East. So they chose to car pool it to Washington together. Since they had a couple of days stuck in the car together, they talked a lot, and developed a unique relationship, across political lines. Despite their differences, they found they could work together and discover ways of reaching agreements, and find some common, workable solutions. They called it Town Hall on Wheels, and invited phone calls and questions, and had good discussions with ordinary citizens as they crossed the country. Wont that be great, if they can take that attitude, and cooperation, to Congress with them? What an idea! Isnt that something we can all use, to help us find the good side of other peoples principles and beliefs? Do we all have a tendency to either avoid talking about politics, only talk about it with folks you agree with, or debate or argue, to change the others opinion? What can we each do? Try it out. When you find yourself in a political conversation with someone you know and like who has a different opinion from yours, how about approaching the situation with a respectful and appreciative attitude? Practice being respectful, tolerant, and understanding. Instead of putting forth so many of your own opinions, try listening and asking questions, to get them to talk openly of their position. Work to understand, and find the good part, of the other side. Can you find truths you can agree upon, and appreciate their point of view? Like they say, weve each got two ears and only one mouth. Maybe we were meant to listen, and try to understand, instead of just profess our own beliefs? This could be one way that you can make the world a little less divided or polarized, and promote some understanding, cooperation, and positive solutions, that our country could really use at this time. Make the world a little better because youre here. Courts in these jurisdictions have shown themselves to be sympathetic to the trolls, or as they call themselves, patent-assertion entities. Patent trolls, typically shell companies, buy the rights to dormant patents and use them to extort holders of similar patents by filing false patent-infringement claims. Defendants will often settle out of court just to make the case go away. Its cheaper than hiring expensive lawyers to fight claims without merit. The predatory patent-infringement threats and lawsuits drained an estimated $29 billion from the U.S. economy in 2011 alone, according to a Boston University study released in June 2012. That figure represents only direct legal costs, so the true economic toll is much higher since the true toll includes various indirect costs such as diversion of resources, delays in new products, and loss of market share. These abuses have been going on largely under the radar for years, but the problem is finally getting the scrutiny it deserves thanks to a high-profile patent-infringement lawsuit brought by Kraft Heinz against TC Heartland of Carmel, Ind. Kraft Heinz claims that TC Heartlands liquid water-enhancers infringe on Krafts MiO line, which are used to add fruit flavorings, along with caffeine, B vitamins and/ or electrolytes, to water. Last week the Supreme Court heard the case and the phenomenon was front and center. Kraft had sued in Delaware, even though Heartland sells a relatively small share of its product there. Heartlands lawyers say the case should be transferred to Indiana, so that the lawsuit may be brought in the judicial district where the defendant resides. While Kraft is clearly not a patent troll, it is taking advantage of a 1990 federal court ruling, VE Holding Corp. v. Johnson Gas Appliance, which held that patent lawsuits could be filed in any district where the district sells its products. That ruling has served the trolls well. Whether the high courts ruling derails the trolls gravy train remains with the future, but it might invite federal legislation to curb abuse of patent-infringement lawsuits and venue-shopping. The Innovation Act was offered in the 113th Congress, sponsored by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, Virginia Republican. It would halt destructive lawsuits. In December 2013, the House passed Mr. Goodlattes legislation bipartisan majority vote of 325-91, but it was killed in the upper chamber by Harry Reid at the behest of trial lawyers. Real reform of the patent system requires a shifting of the burden of proof, to the trolls, and away from inventors and innovators. Loser pays provisions of the Innovation Act would ensure that the trolls would have to pay the defendants legal fees if they bring a false lawsuit and lose. Bonding requirements would further stipulate that patent trolls put up some money at the outset of any litigation, reducing the likelihood that they could simply declare bankruptcy, dissolve their shell companies and disappear if they lose. With Mr. Reid now retired to Nevada and Republicans in control of the Senate, the Innovation Act should be resurrected and promptly enacted into law. Legislation is also needed to overturn the VE Holding ruling, which encourages the queues in East Texas and Delaware. A courtroom is no place for trolls. The bipartisan car pool A viral Facebook entry about child sex trafficking posted by a concerned Southern California mom, Diandra Toyos, has reached tens of thousands of people through shares, likes and comments. Unfortunately it is a misinformed and ultimately harmful depiction of what this crime is about and how it happens in the United States. In her post, Toyos relays the story of her familys recent outing to Ikea, which was interrupted when two men followed her, her mother and her children through the store, despite their efforts to elude their pursuers. This was a terrifying incident and it reminds all of us of the need to be cognizant of our surroundings. The problem is that Toyos framed herself and her family as targets of human traffickers. There are zero indicators of human trafficking in Toyos story. Zero. I wish I could say the post nonetheless will help make us all better safe and vigilant than sorry. In fact, I find that it so misrepresents the dangers, warning signs and risks associated with sex trafficking that its readers and likers may now try to protect kids by watching for the wrong things in the wrong places. They may miss real sex trafficking as it happens; they may miss the opportunity to extend a lifeline to a child who needs their help. What people dont understand about sex trafficking can prove lethal to kids. Im a professional in the anti-trafficking field, and I have encountered thousands of child sex-trafficking cases in the United States. I have never seen, read or heard about a real sex-trafficking situation in which a child was abducted by traffickers in broad daylight at a busy store under a mothers watchful eye. Its just not the way it works. Traffickers tend to coerce their victims because hauling them off is too risky. Their tactics generally arent the kind that leave physical bruises. Victims are recruited, manipulated, made dependent. The psychological and emotional ties they establish are highly effective. Trafficked children are unlikely to attempt escape. They often wont snitch on their traffickers even if law enforcement approaches them. And while child sex trafficking can happen to anyone, children of color, children with a past history of sex abuse, children who come from broken or unstable homes, children who face poverty, and children with disabilities are especially vulnerable. The most pernicious part of the viral Facebook post was its comments section. As sex-trafficking survivors and anti-trafficking advocates myself included tried to correct the misconceptions in it, and tried to alert the public to the harms caused by misunderstandings and sensationalism, weve been met with anger and outrage. Sound bite quotes and statistics were thrown back at me in an attempt to highlight my ignorance on the subject. Human trafficking happens everywhere, I was reminded. Its in our own backyards. These are the exact phrases my colleagues and the anti-trafficking movement publicized years ago to raise awareness. We never imagined theyd be used to challenge our own expertise and in defense of efforts that threaten victims. Worse, as the stalking story was being praised by commenters, narratives that were heart-breaking and accurate, offered by survivors, were hijacked and undermined. Attempts to inform were interpreted as attacks on protective parents. The public imagination too easily aligns with the kind of abduction fears portrayed in the Facebook post and in the comments that followed. Before you post such a tale, or like it or add a comment, do your homework. Think critically about what effect such narratives and responses may have on those most at-risk, on survivors and on real attempts to educate people and fight this terrible crime. If you want to protect your children, listen to the messages of those who know this crime best. Pay attention to statistical reports, seek out the interest groups who are working on this issue, look at the evidence presented by survivors. Dont let the sympathy engendered by a scary story blind you to what sex trafficking is really about. There are scores of people dedicated to keeping children safe, healthy and protected from the horrific reality of sex trafficking in our country. We care about victims and survivors. And we know what were talking about.Trafficking nonsense on Facebook Lara Powers has been working to eradicate child sex tracking for ve years. Each fruit tree bears the fruit that its suppose to. An apple tree bears apples, a lemon tree bears lemon. Each persons life bears fruit. And the fruit is the words we say as a result of the condition of our heart. The Pharisees words concerning Jesus showed the condition of their heart. His lesson is simple and true each tree is known by its fruit. Keep this in mind as you read Matthew 12:33-37. Jesus simply says make a tree good and its fruit will be good or a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is known by its fruit. In teaching this, he taught the people to be aware of false prophets and that they would be recognized by their fruits (Matthew 7:15-20). The fruit of a sinful heart is sin. Their problem and our problem is that we are born with a sinful heart and the fruit that we bear is sin. No matter what we do, we cannot make our sinful heart bear good fruit for God. Only God can take a sinful human heart and make it right before him. The good news for all humanity is that God is willing to make any persons heart new if they ask him in faith. This is made possible because of Jesus sinless sacrifice on the cross and of his bodily resurrection from the dead. Here is what God did in Jesus: He made him who knew no sin to become sin for us so that we can become the righteousness of God (2 Cor. 5:21). This is Gods love for you that through Jesus Christ, God is able to make your heart new, righteous before him so that the fruit of your heart is good fruit of the Spirit and not the bad fruit the flesh (Galatians 5:19-23). Proverbs 6:16-19 teach us just how sinful a human heart can be. Jesus Christ alone has the power to make a person heart new and in right standing with God the Father. When God makes a persons heart new and righteous, the good fruit of the Spirit will be produced through that persons life. This will be evident because there will be a change that others will notice. God the Father knows exactly what changes need to take place in your life. If your life is in a mess and you want to have a changed life, then call upon the Lord Jesus Christ and ask him to save you from your sins and to give you a new heart. You will experience a relationship with God that is real and personal. He will give you the gift of the Holy Spirit that will teach and guide you in the way that you should go. You get to know him as you spend time with him in his Word (the Holy Bible) and prayer as he reveals his plans and promises to you. Robert Bass is pastor of First Baptist Church of Lake City. Robert Bassrobertcbass@yahoo.com The death penalty establishes justiceAramis Ayala is the state attorney for Floridas Ninth Judicial Circuit. She made national news recently when she stated she would not be seeking the death penalty in the prosecution of Markeith Loyd, who is charged with killing his girlfriend and Orlando Police Lieutenant Debra Clayton. She also said she would seek the death penalty in any other capital case. She is ideologically opposed to the death penalty, believing capital punishment is costly and ineffective as a deterrent. There came a time in the history of man that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually, Genesis 6:5. This is an accurate description of a society completely corrupted by the absence of law and order. It was this cultural climate that precipitated the flood. Emerging from the ark, Noah and his family were tasked with repopulating the earth and restoring the civilization that had succumbed to anarchy. To do that, God gave mankind its first law, Whoever sheds mans blood, by man his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God He made man, Genesis 9:6. If mankind were to survive as a civilized society, it would only be possible if established on a sense of right and wrong founded on the principle of justice. So the Father took the most serious of human offenses, murder, to lay a foundation of justice from which all other lesser offenses could be patterned. Gods reasoning is when a man takes another mans life without justification, he is destroying the image of God in another person needlessly, and justly forfeits the right to continue bearing that image himself. And He tasked mankind with the prosecution of justice, by man his blood shall be shed. Aramis Ayalas blanket refusal to pursue the death penalty in capital offense cases not only displays a stubborn refusal to enforce the laws of the State of Florida and the Constitution of the United States she took an oath to uphold, but is just as lawless an act that CHRISTIAN CONCEPTS Gary Kinggarybkingcc@gmail.com... the Father took the most serious of human offenses, murder, to lay a foundation of justice from which all other lesser offenses could be patterned.Think about other peoples sufferingWhat if you opened the mailbox to find a letter that began like this: Dear Friend, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you, but rejoice As much as we all enjoy a letter addressed to us, right about now you would probably hope this one was delivered to the wrong address! Who in their right mind would rejoice about suffering? But then you read on: that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed for it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God: and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? (1 Peter 4:12-13,17). Under the influence of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle Peter penned this letter to help us understand how to rejoice in suffering: We make Gods glory our priority rather than our own comfort! As humans, we can get so engrossed in making our own nest comfortable we may grow immune to the suffering of the rest of the world. We become callous to the fact that many people (even our own friends and family) are walking through this life and into eternity without ever having met Christ. This time of division and hardship facing our country is a golden opportunity to realize that the luxury surrounding us will not satisfy, nor will it last. We may have the wrong idea of luxury. Luxury isnt just having all that you want, but rather having the resources to get what you need. For much of the world, this is not the case. Sadly, luxury typically serves to blind us to the reality that we need God. It is comforting to me that this passage tells us not to be surprised at the trials we are going through. This means our struggles never catch God not looking! In His love for us, He will allow us to suffer the consequences of our own choices, and at times the choices of others. This is punishment, but motivation for us to choose Him and grow our faith. As Christians, we have spent too many This time ofdivision and hardship facing our country is a golden opportunity to realize thatthe luxurysurrounding us will not satisfy, nor will it last. Covenant First Presbyterian Church to present A Service of DarknessThe Covenant First Presbyterian Church of Live Oak will present A Service of Darkness by Dale Wood at 7:30 p.m. on Good Friday (April 16). William Poplin will direct a choir of 20-plus voices in seven choral meditations on the last words of Christ. The Service of Darkness commemorates the suffering and death of Christ, and is based on the ancient Tenebrae. Dating from the eighth century, Tenebrae was originally celebrated on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Holy Week. It represented the darkness that fell over the earth as the Son of God was crucified. In Christmas services, candles symbolize the coming of Christ, the Light of the World. The use of candlelight in a darkened church on Good Friday portrays the fading light of the world as Christ was leaving it. Candles are extinguished following each choral meditation, but one candle will remain, indicating that death only seems to triumph over Christ. The community is invited to the free presentation.undermines the principle of justice that safeguards our society as the crime of murder itself. God instituted the death penalty to establish justice, not because it is cost effective or a deterrent. Aramis Ayala should be impeached and disbarred, but that will not happen. A society that believes it is permissible to sacrifice the unborn on the altar of convenience has already lost any sense of justice. Jesus said, And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all, Luke 17:26-27. The return of Christ and the reestablishment of justice in His millennial reign will be as big a surprise to some as the flood was in Noahs day. Gary B. King can be reached at garybkingcc@gmail.com. PENALTYContinued From 5Agenerations looking out for our own interests and growing callous to the pain of others around us. It is easy to shrug off problems when they belong to someone else. Now the result of that indifference is sitting squarely on our doorsteps. What will we do? According to this passage, the great news for all of us is first, as Christians, God is our Father and the discipline starts with His children. Hebrews 12:11 confirms what we know: No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest or righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Anyone who is or has been a parent understands this perfectly! Discipline is necessary to produce great kids! Secondly, if we respond to Gods discipline, the outcome for those who do not know God will be much brighter. We will step outside our isolated lives and grow concerned about the sufferings of others and show them by our example how able God is to meet our needs during times like these. May it be so, because every heart matters! Both Columbia tennis teams open up district tournament play next week. Both are defending champs. CHS TENNIS SENIORS HONORED THE MASTERSDustin Johnson withdraws from Masters with back injury JohnsonBy PAUL NEWBERRYAssociated PressAUGUSTA, Ga. Dustin Johnson arrived at Augusta National on quite a roll, having won his last three tournaments. He never even took a shot at the first major of the year. The worlds No. 1-ranked player was forced to withdraw from the Masters on Thursday because of a lower back injury suffered less than 24 hours earlier in a freak fall at the home he was renting for the week. I want to play, Johnson said. I just cant swing. He certainly tried, arriving at the club about two hours before he was scheduled to tee off in the final group of the opening round with twotime Masters champion Bubba Watson and PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker. Johnson took some easy swings on the practice range, headed back inside for additional treatment, and then broke out his longer irons and even the driver to see how the back reacted. He was clearly in pain, rubbing his back several times and letting his caddie tee up the ball so he didnt have bend over. After an extended conversation with his coach, Butch Harmon, Johnson started walking toward the first tee. His intention was to play. His back wouldnt let him. It sucks, Johnson said. Im playing the best golf of my career. This is one of my favorite tournaments of the year. Then a freak accident happened (Wednesday) when I got back from the course. It sucks. It sucks really bad. Johnson got as far as the putting green between the clubhouse and the first tee. After about a half-dozen putts, he pulled out an iron and took a few more half-hearted practice swings. Walker and Watson headed toward the tee. Johnson went the opposite way. I was doing everything I would to try to play, he said. Last night, it was ice, heat, ice. I was up pretty much all night trying to get it ready for today. I had it worked on all morning. Obviously, I can make some swings. But I cant make my normal swing. This Masters was over for Johnson before it even began, a stunning development that removed the favorite for the green jacket. The accident occurred Wednesday after Johnson returned to his rental home from a morning practice session at Augusta National. On his way outside to move his car, and wearing only socks, he slipped on a short staircase. It would have been better if it was full set of stairs. I would have slid all the way down, Johnson said. But there were only three steps. I landed on my left side. My left elbow is sore and bruised. My lower left back took the brunt of it. He doesnt think the injury is serious. In fact, if it had happened earlier in the week, he probably wouldve been able to play. I feel like in two days, Ill be fine, Johnson said. He had been scheduled to attend the Golf Writers Association of America annual dinner Wednesday night to accept its award as male player of the year. Johnson was coming off a season in which he won his first major at the U.S. Open, was voted PGA Tour player of the year for the first time, won the PGA Tour money title and captured the Vardon Trophy for the lowest adjusted scoring average.A somber tribute to Arnold Palmer as Masters begins COURTESYArnold Palmer was honored Thursday. By DOUG FERGUSONAssociated PressAUGUSTA, The Masters began Thursday with two ceremonial tee shots and one empty chair. In a somber tribute to Arnold Palmer, who died in September, Augusta National chairman Billy Payne escorted Palmers widow to the first tee for the honorary start. Payne also carried Palmers green jacket and draped it over a chair where Palmer had sat last April. This is the first Masters without the King since 1954. The almost unbearable sadness we feel at the passing of Arnold is surpassed only by the love and affection for him that will always reside in our heart, Payne said as thousands crammed around the first tee on a crisp morning full of sunshine and wind. Every fan through the gate received a button that said, I am a member of Arnies Army. Payne asked for a moment of silence so everyone could remember their own experience with Palmer did anyone in golf have more friends? and then turned it over to Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player for the ceremonial tee shots. Player, who jokingly asked for a mulligan at age 81, drilled one down the middle. Nicklaus got him by about 5 yards, though Player was quick to announce it as a tie. Thats how it was among the Big Three Palmer, Nicklaus and Player, whose 34 majors among them included one stretch in the 1960s in which they combined to win the Masters seven straight times. They were best of friends off the course and hated losing to one another on the course. Palmer had been part of the honorary start since 2007. He was so feeble a year ago that he did not hit a drive, though he still came out to the first tee and watched from a chair. Thats what stood out the most to Player. Arnold was a great stickler for manners, and Ill never forget, which really reminded me on the first tee this morning, Player said. Arnold could hardly walk to the first tee and he put his arms like this, and he stood up like this. To demonstrate, Player placed his hands on the side of his chair and lifted himself up. Because he had been taught to stand up, Player said. And he gave a little wave, and that was very touching to me, and I could see him doing it in that chair today. Brad Dalke, the U.S. Amateur runner-up, didnt tee off until 11:30 a.m.. Rickie Fowler and William McGirt were among the players who came out to watch. Only 2? Early low scorers finish under par at windy Masters By PETE IACOBELLIAssociated PressAUGUSTA, Georgia Russell Henley and Kevin Chappell could be a rarity on a blustery day at the Masters. Both were pretty pleased with themselves after their strong starts at Augusta National, considering the conditions. They shot 1-under 71s with the winds blowing heavily throughout the opening round Thursday. Patrons had a hard time holding onto their hats, flags atop the pins could be heard snapping in the wind and trees that line the course consistently waved as golfers walked past. Henley and Chappell were the early low scorers on a day when few could stay significantly below par due to the strong gusts that bent shots and played havoc with golfers trying to judge proper distance. There was a lot of thinking out there, said Chappell, who was at 2-under before a bogey on the 18th hole knocked him back. I hope conditions stay playable, Chappell said. Im sure thereve been some gusts where balls are moving on. But anytime you shoot under par around here under any condition, its a good score. It certainly was only 12 golfers were under par midway through the opening round. Henley was simply excited to be teeing off. His win last week at the Houston Open got him into the Masters and he had the first tee time right after the somber honorary start ceremony that was a tribute to the late Arnold Palmer. I still cant believe Im here and next thing you know Im behind the ceremonial tee shot, Henley said. It quickly got very real for Henley. He had to contend with the winds that went one way on one hole and a different direction the next. B1

Take a leadership position and follow through with your plans. Your enthusiasm and hands-on approach will separate you from any competition you face. Romance will improve your personal life. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Put reason and reliability first. Don't jump to conclusions, take on too much or expect too much from others. Keep your life simple and live within your means. Make changes that will stabilize your life, not disrupt it. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Creativity, innovation and enlightenment are heightened. Take whatever opportunity you get to explore the ideas and desires that excite you the most. Celebrate your discoveries and achievements with someone you love. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Know what you want and seize the moment. Confidence will play a determining role regarding what you accomplish and what you don't. Refuse to let anyone waste your time debating fruitless issues. Stay focused on what's most important to you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You can reinvent an old plan and make it work for you. Delve into situations that require thought, planning and physical action, and you will find a way to accomplish your goal. Discuss your financial, legal or contractual obligations. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Look for greater stability when it comes to important partnerships. Coming to terms with things and making agreements that will be beneficial to everyone involved should be your intent. Be the solution, not the problem. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): A steady pace forward will be your quickest route to success. Don't let what others do take priority over how you handle business and personal negotiations. Use your head and you will achieve greater security. DEAR ABBY: I was married for more than 20 years. My ex and I divorced five years ago. During that time I stayed busy focusing on my children and their needs. About seven months ago I met a nice guy. We saw each other for about five months, then out of nowhere, he broke things off. I was devastated. He said his reason for the breakup was he needed time to find himself. He was recently divorced and has sole custody of his kids. He has been under a great deal of stress and started seeing a therapist a couple of months ago. I understand why he needs this time, but I also wish he would let me help. He said he wants to remain friends. I avoided contact with him for several weeks, but now I am drawn back to him. My friends keep telling me to forget him, but I cant get him off my mind. We talk almost daily and have even gotten together again a couple of times. I keep telling myself all the reasons it wont work. Should I run away, stay friends only, or hope to work things out? HOPELESS ROMANTIC IN WISCONSIN DEAR HOPELESS ROMANTIC: When a man says he needs time to find himself and breaks things off, it usually means hes no longer interested or ready for the kind of relationship youre looking for. This man is newly divorced and parenting solo, so he has as much on his plate as he can handle right now. That hes seeing a therapist is a wise move, so give him credit for that. But the kind of problems he is trying to work through are not ones you can help him with. At a later date things may work out, but clearly not now. A friendship may be possible, but only if you are strong enough to disengage emotionally until he is ready. DEAR ABBY: I have noticed a trend at childrens birthday parties. The children arent opening their presents at the party. Instead, the parents collect the gifts and take them home for the child to open later. To me, this seems rude and inconsiderate to the children who are attending the party. Part of the enjoyment of giving a gift is seeing the recipients response. Please let me know the rule of etiquette in this matter. Am I correct in thinking that presents should be opened at childrens birthday parties in front of their guests? GIFT ETIQUETTE DEAR G.E.: No rule of etiquette decrees that gifts must be opened at the birthday party. Because this trend bothers you, ask the parent of the birthday child why she or he has chosen to have the gifts opened afterward, because there may be more than one reason for it. One that occurs to me might be that its a way of preventing embarrassment on the part of children who might not be able to afford a gift as expensive as some of the other childrens. DEAR ABBY: My wife and I have been married 11 years, but together for 15. Weve had our ups and downs as normal couples do, but lately it seems like everything she does, I try and find something to nitpick and argue over. In fact, I kind of enjoy it. There was a recent misunderstanding that led to an awakening of a jealous side to me that I never had, and now I cant seem to turn it off. When she goes to her chiropractor appointment, I call to make sure she has the appointment for the time she told me. She spent time visiting her dad and aunt, and even that made me jealous. I feel like if I keep this up, I may lose her. We had a baby five months ago, and hes very needy, much more than our older child was, so thats also putting a strain on our relationship. What can I do to be a better husband and not get angry? FRUSTRATED HUSBAND IN CALIFORNIA DEAR FRUSTRATED: You say this new behavior started because of a recent misunderstanding. I wish you had mentioned what it was, because it would have been helpful to know. Did the misunderstanding make you feel insecure, or just angry and punitive? Or is the fact that your wife needs to share her time caring for the new baby whats bothering you? If you havent already talked this through with your wife, you should. The arrival of a new baby can result in not only the arrival of a bundle of joy, but also bring with it postpartum depression, fatigue, physical aches and pains and lack of physical desire. If these are whats setting you off, you should both discuss whats happening with her doctor. DEAR ABBY: My 17-year-old son has always been very shy. I dont think it helps that hes now 6 feet 6 inches tall and obviously stands out. Recently at a sports event which his team won, there were celebrations that were caught on video, and I could see him milling around outside of the celebratory circle of his teammates. It seemed very sad that he didnt feel comfortable enough to jump into the huddle. When he was asked to join his teammates for lunch, he said he wasnt hungry. My husband thinks we should just let him find his own way in life. I desperately want to talk to him and see if I cant get him to be more sociable, but Im not sure how to achieve this. What would you suggest, Abby? Leave him alone or intervene, and if so, how? MOTHER OF A SHY GUY DEAR MOTHER: I would suggest a little of both. Because you are concerned that your son is isolating himself, talk to him about it and try to find out why. And if he appears to be happy with his life, let him live it and, as your husband says, find his own way. Write Dear Abby at www.DearAbby.com or P.O. Box 69440, Los Angeles, CA 90069.
