City Manager Scott Reynolds
is almost 100 percent in
agreement
The results of a small
survey of people in Columbia
County show that most of
the individuals polled see
former City Manager Scott
Reynolds' falsification of
academic credentials on his
employment application as
the wrong thing to do.
The random survey was
conducted at Columbia
County Public Library, Lake
City Mall and in downtown
Lake City'.
Reynolds noted in
2004 when he started
working as a customer
service representative for
* city government that he
had earned an Associate of
Arts degree from Brevard
Community College, Records
proved he attended the
college but never obtained
-any degree. A college degree
is a requirement for the
position of city manager
to which Reynolds was
promoted on an interim basis
in 2007. Reynolds signed a
contract formally accepting
the position in August 2008.
In the survey, one person
stood out frbm the other
seven by saying she felt it
did not matter that Reynolds
did not earn a degree

Katie Nicole Roberts.
Johnson, 22, of 2631 Shirley's
Way, Leesburg, was arrested
Jan. 23 by Leesburg Police
Departmentofficers and detained
in the Lake County Jail, accord-
ing to reports from the Lake
County Sheriff's Office. She


was arrested in her apart-
'ment when Leesburg Police
Department officers executed
a Columbia County warrant for
her on a first-degree murder
with a firearm charge. There
were no pending charges against.
Johnson in Lake County. ,.
Roberts, 27, was found dead
in a trash can at a home located
at 885 SW Jaguar Drive in the
Cypress Landing subdivision.

for local events.

Month subcommittee of the
Sesquicentennial Celebration
Committee's History and
Heritage subcommittee, is
very pleased with the success
of the Black History Month
events this year, she said.
The Lake City
Sesquicentennial Celebration
included many events in con-


junction .with National Black
History Month. Some of
these were an art contest, a
prayer breakfast, several days
of soul food being served at
Shands Lake Shore Hospital
and other highlights at vari-
ous churches.
"We had several fantastic
events, which were all well
attended by public officials as
well as members of the gen-
eral public, who represented
a diverse group," Washington
said. "All of our programs
were geared toward being
uplifting and inspiring for
people to learn about African-
American life."
Washington said one key


focal point was the role of the
church in black history.
"We got here on the wings
of prayer," she said. "We want
our whole community to soar
on the wings of prayer as we
reach to become a colorblind
community and society. Black
History Month is really every
day, 365 days a year, 24/7.
"I say this because black
history is really American
history every day. The only
, reason it is pulled out for
one month was because the
achievements of African-
Americans were ignored for
so long."

Job and Career Fair set for Saturday

Layoffs and high unemployment rates
are symptoms that often accompany an
economic downtown.
To help Columbia County residents wh6
are seeking new employment opportu-
nities in the latest economic downturn,
Lake City Mall operations and marketing
manager Janice Dorminey has scheduled
a local job and career fair.
The Lake City Mall Job and Career Fair
will take place 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at
the Lake City Mall, 2469 W. U.S. Highway
90.
"I'm doing this as a community service,"
Dorminey said. "In the past, local agencies
have been able to put on job fairs, but since
that hasn't happened, I felt now was a good
time for the Lake City Mall to step up and
do this."
Dorminey said 20 employers are signed
up to participate in the event.
Retailers as well as representatives
from a local radio station, Shands medi-
cal services, Southland .Waste, Florida
Department of Corrections, Suwannee
Medical Personnel, Sitel, Lowe's, LifeSouth
Community Blood Center and three mili-
tary recruiters will be at the event as well
as others.
"It's a very diverse group of employers,"
Dorminey said. "People should dressfor


success and bring their resume."
In addition Lake City Community
College will have representatives their
various departments on site.
"They will have information on all types
of career training and long and short term
courses," she said.
Representatives from the Florida
Department of Vocation and Rehabilitation
are also scheduled to be on site, as well as
representatives from St. Leo College.
Dorminey said Florida Crown Workforce
representatives are scheduled to present
information with their career coaches and
they'll also have information on jobs that
are available.
This is the first official job fair spon-
sored by the Lake City Mall.
"In the past we've had job service com-
panies that would present this,". Dorminey
said, noting the job and career fair is for
the North Florida area. "They didn't have
the funding to do that this year."
Dorminey said she was prompted to
host the job fair after hearing about all the
layoffs at the Perdue processing plant in
,Suwannee County and other smaller, local
layoffs.
"I thought this would be a good service
to hold the job fair for the community," she
said. "If there are any businesses that have
employment opportunities they can call
the mall as late as this afternoon to reserve
a space to participate in the job fair."

Owen K. Van Ness
Mr. Owen K., Van Ness, 90,
of Lake City, died Thursday,
February 19, 2009. He was bom
in Pequannock, New Jersey,
the son of the late Herbert and
Bertha Van Ness. He moved to
Lake City in 1994, coming from
Chiefland. In his spare time he
enjoyed golf, was a member of
Quail Heights Country Club, and
was a Master Craftsman. He was
a loving Father and Grandfather
who enjoyed spending time
with his family. Mr. Owen was
preceded in death by his wife
of fifty-one years Catherine Van
Ness. Mr.Van Ness is survived
by. his son, Jim Van Ness of
Davenport, FL. 4 grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren

Four people, three men and a 16-year-old
male juvenile from the Orlando area, were
arrested in connection with the incident.
Carrington Emanuel Ivory, 20,4564 Oliva
St., Orlando; Demondrick Williams, 18,
11488 Brickyard Road, Windemere; Jarelle
Williams, 17, 4022 Riley St., Orlando and
the 16-year-old have been charged with two
counts of robbery with guns, two counts of
armed kidnapping and two counts of using a
firearm in the commission of a felony. Jarelle
Williams and Demondrick Williams, as well
as Ivory, are being held at the Columbia
County Jail. The Williams suspects are
brothers. The 16-year-old remains at the
Gainesville Regional Juvenile Detention
Center, according to reports from the Live
Oak Police Department
"We recovered the gray get-away car
and now we are working to connect the
four suspects to the gray Toyota Camry
that was used in the robbery," Shaw said,
noting the suspects will probably face
additional charges before the investigation
is concluded.
Accordingto Live OakPolice Department
reports, officers responded to a report of
an armed robbery at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday
at Live Oak Jewelry, 106 Howard St.
Officers learned that three black male
suspects entered the store. The first sus-
pect to enter the store was brandishing a
handgun and ordered one employee to the
floor, while a second victim was taken to

the back of the store to the store's safe.
The two remaining suspects watched
the employee on the floor and the third
suspect broke a jewelry display case and
stole jewelry, according to reports.
Shaw said there were no customers in
the store during the robbery, only two
employees, who were not injured during
the incident.
'There were no injuries, they were just
shaken up," he said:
The store employees, however, were
able to give descriptions of the suspects,
their clothing and the guns used. Other
witnesses outside the business were key in
identifying the vehicle along with provid-
ing the tag number.
About 60-90 minutes into the investiga-
tion, Columbia County Sheriff's Office
deputies contacted the Suwannee County
Sheriff's Office and reported that Sgt.
Mike Sweat had a suspect vehicle stopped
on Interstate 75, about a mile south of
Interstate 10.
During. the traffic stop, property sto-
len fromthe jewelry store was recovered
in the suspect vehicle. Live Oak Police
Department detectives responded to the
scene and were able to determine that the
jewelry recovered in the vehicle did, in fact,
come from the Live Oak Jewelry Store.
Shaw said authorities have determined
Ivory's brother is the owner of the red
Monte Carlo the suspects were traveling'
in when arrested.

Class 2A has 117 schools
and Columbia competes
in Section 2, which has 14
schools.
Columbia track is in a
more manageable District
3-3A, which includes
Eastside, Fleming Island,
Gainesville, Middleburg,
Nease, Palatka and
Ridgeview high schools.

Forest High edged out
a district win in front of
the Columbia High Lady
Tigers faithful with a
3-0 victory.
Megan Hill pitched all 11
innings for the Lady Tigers,
holding Forest scoreless
before things got away in
the top of the 11th inning.
Hill allowed nine hits in
the game, and had a no-hit-
ter going through the first
five innings.
. Columbia had its chanc-
es to take the win with the
closest coming in the the


bottom of the 10th inning.
Jessica Keene led off the
inning with a double to cen-
ter field.
Janine Lopez reached
base to give the Lady Tigers
runners on the' corners
before Keene was thrown
out at home on a suicide
bunt.
Dana Cauthen scored the
winning run for Forest off
of a Brittany Wagner hit
