Local man arrested following manhunt


Suspect has active
warrants for assault,
attempted murder.

'City man with active war-
rants for aggravated assault
with a weapon and attempted
murder, was arrested in a
wooded area after he tried
to flee from a Florida
Highway Patrol trooper dur-
ing a traffic stop, according to


police reports.
The incident happened
at approximately 6:50 p.m.
Friday evening at the inter-
section of October Road and
County Road 238. Terry
Shernod Jonas, no age given,
of Lake City, was arrested in
connection with the incident.
According to informa-
tion from Florida Highway
Patrol trooper Sgt. Kevin/
Pace, trooper Jesse Stalnaker
attempted to make a traffic
stop on Interstate 75 north-
bound, when the driver, later
identified as Jonas, exited the


interstate on U.S. 441 north at
Ellisville and bailed out of his
car and fled on foot.
According to reports, Jonas
exited his car and ran into
a patch of woods east of the
Texaco gas station.
Stalnaker called for help
and a perimeter was set up as
law enforcement officers from
the Florida Highway Patrol,
Columbia County 'Sheriff's
Office, Baker County Sheriff's
Office, Union County Sheriff's
Office and Florida Fish and

Dave Clanton organized
himself Friday as he began
his first day as interim city
manager for Lake City.
When a new city man-
ager is hired, Clanton will
return to his post as execu-
tive director of Lake City
Regional Utilities.
The 50-year-old is married
to Peggy,
his wife of
19 years,
and they
have three
sons, one
daughter
and eight
grandchil- Clanton
dren, he said. His hobbide
are hunting and fishing.
Clanton remained in the
field of water and wastewa-
ter utilities ever .since he,
started with Lake City as a
shift operator at the Saint
Margarets .Wastewater
Treatment Plant in 1987.
He operated the facil-
ity,. collected samples and
performed hourly tests to
assure the plant was func-
tioning properly.

Sheriff's office works quickly
Columbia County Sheriff's Office detectives handcuff a suspect Friday afternoon at an
S&S Food Store on U.S. Highway 47 north of Interstate-75. At least three suspects have been
questioned and detained. No other report was available as press time as to possible charges
for the suspects.

including races, walking,
softball and tennis ball toss
contests, shot put throwing
contests and the standing
long jump.

contest and won a ribbon.
"It's a fun event and it's
the best sport," he said. "It
felt real good to have the
people clapping for me."
Brunell Friar was doing
double duty as a Special
Olympics volunteer Friday.
Not only did she help the
athletes, she also cheered


for her grand daughter,
Tessa Moss, during the
competitions.
"I enjoy helping the
children with Special
Olympics," she said. "I
enjoy the communication
and the hard work they put
into it. It pleases me and
makes my heart swell to
see the children compete."

School principal William
Murphy said students
from his school enjoyed
participating in Friday's
summer games.
"It's important that the
children get to participate
in events like this because
a lot of times they. don't
get to participate in the
regular sporting events,"
he said. 'This gives them
a way to get out and get
some praise and honor and
have some fun."

served as volunteer
coordinator for Friday's
event and noted there
were close to 150
volunteers, including
students, community
members, teachers and
law enforcement officers.
"I think a lot of the


children enjoyed helping
with Special Olympics,"
she said. "I think they
enjoyed it because it
makes them shine and
standout towards being
someone special."
Columbia High School
senior Tabitha Quarles
volunteered for the event
after classmates told her
it would be a fun event to
work as a volunteer.
"You try to make sure
you enjoy yourself and
make sure the kids enjoy
themselves," she said. "I
had a great time and I'm
pretty sure they had an
amazing time also."
Marquetta Anderson
was working her second
event as a Special
Olympics volunteer
after having a positive
experience the first time.
"It touched my heart
to see the kids cross the
finish line and I really
enjoyed coming out here,"
she said.

28, he will bring the experience
of that 30-year career to the
county's recreation department.
More importantly, Coppock will
offer his can-do attitude as the
county continues to expand its
reach into local recreation. '
We expect good things
to happen to local sporting
opportunities from this

Coppock has displayed a vested
interest in local recreation.

I feel sorry for the children


who can't remember when


That each generation
has its own kids is
obvious. What is also
true is a writer in
his 80s cannot find a
bridge to today's world. We had
good kids and bad ones in my'
day and time, just like you have
today. But, in a way, I still feel a
bit of regret and sorrow for kids
today who 'just can't remember
when.'
I remember when doctors
came to the house for anything
from a common' cold to measles.,
They always carried a bulky
black valise that had the answer
to our specific need. The letters
RX comes from Latin origin that
means "Take thou so much of."
So we would watch Doc as he
would take a bit of this and that
and the other and grind them
into a powder and then press
the stuff into a pill. Handmade,
homemade, and fit for individual
needs. That was our family
doctor.
I remember when families
were rather large. We had nine
in our house, three daughters,
three sons and then me. I was
the youngest and mother always
referred to me as "My baby."
How all seven of us made it
though our juvenile years is
still a mystery. To swim in our
favorite swimming pool (the
creek), on a hot summer day
and bare-butted is something
today's kids just "can't
remember when!"
. With a rope (treasured item)
hitched onto the middle pine,
with a gunny sack filled with
sawdust tied to the bottom of
the rope, we would climb to
the.heights of the neighboring
tree (some 30 feet), catch the
rope and bag between our
knees and yell, "Tarzan." That
fun, exercise and danger lasted
about two weeks before the
rope broke, and we turned our
attention elsewhere.
To get down in the Florida
dirt, draw a large ring, put your
bag of marbles by your bended
knee and shoot for the marble in
the middle. That was a joy that
so many today have just never
had. We played "for keeps" when
our parents weren't around. We
made up our own rules as the
game proceeded. "No Uppens,"
"No Aggies," no Bowlers (big
marbles), no Trenching, and
at least a half dozen more to

who starting crying (losing his
marbles), and threatened to go
home and tell his Mama.
Rubber gun season is a lost
art today. We built pistols, rifles,
and repeater 'Tommy-gins"
out of wooden crates from
Moore's Furniture Store. We
made an anti-aircraft gun that
took 34 rounds of a cut inter-
tube tied together, and took two
hearty souls to load it. It went
off accidentally and hit a little
neighbor boy in the belly and
knocked him down. We found
ready ammunition down at the
filling station and cut them in
narrow strips to hang them
about round our shoulders and
waist. We invented our own
games, built our own huts, held
drama plays in an old deserted
barn and produced our own
neighborhood newsletter,
which sold for a penny a copy.
I remember those early years
when I was six years old, and
that may have begun my desire
later in life to write books
and columns. I have been a
columnist now for 30 years.
I remember sitting around
the large oval table at supper
time. Supper means "The last


meal of the day." We could miss
breakfast or even lunch, but
EVERYONE WAS REQUIRED
TO BE THERE FOR SUPPER
TIME. Mother would always
be standing at the back door,
calling and checking us in just
before nightfall. We were always
"hungry as a bear" and mother
always had two things on the'
table: TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT!
If we said we were to full to
finish our plate, we didn't get
any dessert. There was always
an extra large bowl of beans
in the middle of the table. We
never went away hungry.
We gathered after supper
on the front lawn (mostly crab
grass) and played games. Tag
was a favorite, along with "As
I draw this magic circle on
your back." If we had enough
there we played "Bum, Bum,
Bum," or 'Mother said, may I."
When it was raining, we met
in the garage and one at a time
would run through puddles
and lightning to see which one
would get struck first I feel
somewhat sad for today's kids
who "feel bored" when they have
all the used electronics lying
around. We were never bored.
We skated, and when the straps
wore out we took the skates
apart and made skateboards.
One neighbor boy had a bicycle
and we made a two-foot ramp
and took turns to see who could
jump the farthest.
We cut palmettos, trimmed
the fan, notched the stem and
with a string rather than a
pocket on our slingshot, could
shoot those things nearly out of
sight. We had watermelon fights
(with the remains), tomato wars
with the rotten tomatoes left in
the garden.
Jesus said, "Love your
neighbor as yourself and that
will fulfill the law." We sure
loved ourselves a lot. We had
gangs, but not the kind that we
have today. The most damage
that was ever done was a
black eye or torn knee denim.
In some ways I liked the old
generation best, but time now is
only memories.
'Time doesn't go it stays.
It's we who go."

through countless meetings,
public hearings, community

have come to the defense of the
.crystal clear river and declared
their intent that another
bottling plant not be built on
this rare jewel.
Last week, Blue Springs
Properties withdrew its appeal
for a permit to take millions of
gallons from the Santa Fe River,
signifying the end to a multi-
year battle over the natural
resource.
Granted, national campaigns
against bottled water and the
lack of judicial support helped,
but it is very clear that the


hundreds of local residents who
turned out at pivotal meetings
(Gilchrist County Planning
and Zoning Board, Gilchrist
County Commission) made
their voices heard. It is also
very clear that the lawmakers
in Gilchrist County listened to
their constituents and voted
to protect this very precious
natural resource.
On behalf of the Our Santa
Fe River Board, and with great
pride, I congratulate the entire
community. With gratitude, I

When fourth- and fifth-graders at
Westside Elementary School were having
trouble with multiplication, school officials
called someone who could help Albert
Einstein.
Although the renowned German scien-
tists has been dead for more than 50 years,
that didn't stop him from dropping by dur-
ing the past couple of weeks to offer help-
ful facts that would help students remem-
ber their multiplication tables. Students
who were able to retain the knowledge
taught by Einstein were given a special
card that allowed them membership into
the Einstein Club.,
And on Friday, those students' hard
work paid off as they were treated to a


morning of activities based around math-
ematics. Students made geometric solids
using marshmallows and gumdrops, deco-
rated cakes using methods of symmetry,
and played a math game.
"We wanted it to be fun, we wanted
to be a celebration for the kids, but we
wanted it to reinforce the concepts that
they had learned as well," said Westside
Elementary Principal Cherie Hill.
The Einstein program was created
by curriculum resource teacher and
Westside's Teacher of the Year Carol
Stephens, who also portrayed the scientist
in the weeks leading up to the Friday event.
Stephens, dressed as Einstein, would go
on the morning television program and
drop by fourth and fifth grade classrooms
to discuss multiplication facts and figures
to help students readily remember.

selves an autobiography
of sorts or about a place
they had been, and feature
colorful art drawn by the
student.
Folsom said the stu-
dents' initial reaction was
surprise at the amount of
work they were required
to do, but said once the
students started, they
became consumed in the
project. She said students
performed research for
the project, consulted dic-
tionaries and thesauruses
for correct word usage and
checked and double
checked spelling.
"I saw tremendous
growth among the stu-
dents, especially in those
who struggle in reading
and writing," Folsom said.

crowded around the boxes
of books, hoping to get a
glimpse at their published
work.
"Students were able to
see what they could do
when they put their minds
to it, and now they know
that they can be authors,"
Folsom said. "It really
encourages them."
Dan Marsee, a Lake City-
based attorney, donated
money for the projects to
be completed and shipped.
Folsom said without him,
the project wouldn't have


been possible.
Marsee, whose grandson
is in Folsom's class, said all
three of his grandchildren
love to read.
"You can't read unless
someone writes something,
and I think it's a great idea
for kids to have books pub-
lished," he said.
He noted that each stu-
dent's book is creative and
colorful, and commended
them on their completed
work.
"It sure beats just having
to write an essay," he said.

BY THE CITY OF LAKE CITY, FLORIDA

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, pursuant to Section 171.044, Florida Statutes, that the
proposed Ordinance, the title of which hereinafter appears, will be considered for enactment
on the 2nd day of March, 2009, by the City Council of the City of Lake City, Florida, at 7:00
p.m., or as soon thereafter as the matters can be heard in the City Council Meeting Room,

Ordinance No. 2009-1179 provides for annexation of a parcel of land contiguous to the
north and west boundary" of the City of Lake City, as shown in a location map which forms
a part of this notice. The complete legal description of the affected lands, by metes and
bounds, as well as a copy of Ordinance No. 2009-1179 can be obtained from the office of
the City Clerk, City Hall, 205 North Marion Avenue, Lake City, Florida.

the win as the Columbia
High Lady Tigers got'
their second district win
of the season with a 17-8
win over Lake Weir on
Friday.
The Lady Tigers fell
behind in the top of the
second inning before com-
ing through for three runs
in the bottom half, and
never looked back.
Keene pitched four
innings allowing six
earned runs and struck
out four batters before giv-
ing way to Megan Hill,
who pitched three innings
for the save.
Hill allowed two runs in
three innings of work in
her first save appearance
of the season. i
The Lady Tigers were
led in hits by Holly
Crumpton with four in the
game. She also had two
RBIs and two runs.
Stephanie Pilkington
and Megan Hill each had
three hits, two runs and an
RBI for the Lady Tigers.
Three batters had two
hits including Michaela
Burton, Kaitlin Scott, and
Peyton Sund.
Burton had two sto-
len bases and scored two

in Birmingham, Ala. Huff
coached under Joe at
Florida A&M. Joe was 2-8
last year in his first season
at Miles.
"We were glad to have
him here for one year," CHS
head coach Craig Howard
said of his defensive coor-
dinator for the 2008 season.


"His aspirations are in col-
lege football and he was
able to get back in it with
his old coach at A&M.
"You can't tell coaches to
turn that kind of opportu-
nity down."

and may get a couple to
become Golden Bears.
The Lake City Saints
routed the Belleview Black
Knights, 46-0, at Annie
Mattox Park on Feb. 14.

race was stoRped that night after 87 of
the scheduled 250 laps and resumed the
next day.
Fast facts: Kenseth, winless in 2008,
won the February events at Fontana in
2006 and 2007 for Roush Fenway, which

into a round of green flag pit stops late in
the event and retook the lead for good on
lap 91 with a lead of almost 3.5 seconds
over Bodine.

the Owner for the construction of the
Project described as follows:
The work to be performed under this
contract will provide a new wastewa-
ter system for the SR-6/I-75 Plan-
ning Area. The Project area is locat-
ed along a portion of New Hope
Church Road and SR-6 east and west
of the exit 460 on 1-75 between the
City of Jasper and City of Jennings.
Key components of the wastewater
system include:
A new main wastewater lift station,
Near SR-6 and CR-146, complete
with three identical submersible-
pumps, piping, valves, electrical/con-
trol panel, electrical service, and an
emergency engine-generator all lo-
cated within a fenced site. The Lift
station shall be constructed to ac-
commodate larger pumps in the fu-
ture.
A new force main between the
wastewater lift station and the waste-
water treatment plant consisting of
approximately 2.5 miles of 8-inch
force main, with jack and bore under
SR-6 and 1-75;
Anew 10"and 16" gravity sewer col-
lection system approximately 1-mile
long that will require some road
bores-
And the associated site work, con-
crete work, miscellaneous metals
work, and electrical work.
