students on Wednesday
began making preparations
for William Shakespeare's
upcoming birthday, his 445th.
In what is becoming an annual
event for the school, students are
preparing to undertake a massive
birthday celebration on April 23 for
the playwright. The event will combine
a number of events taking place on-
campus throughout the day, culminating
with a '"Theater Under the Stars" for the
community that evening..

rent budget to add a crime
scene evidence technician
position and an Office of
Professional Standards ser-
geant position.
The OPS sergeant,
Glaxton said, answers
directly to the chief. He or
she handles issues such as
internal affairs, training,
personnel issues and takes'
care of maintaining records
related to those duties. The
added crime scene techni-
cian, Glaxton said, is needed
because there is currently
only one person to maintain
the evidence room.
To assure criminal cases
will succeed, proper evi-
dence handling is a must,
he said. Not only will the
addition of these two posi-
tions not impact the budget,
he said as he answered one
of Jefferson's questions, but
it will not reduce the force
of officers on the streets.
As for the LCFD, Tunsil


also scored 100 percent
with his requests.
If City Council agrees
with Jefferson's and Moses'
recommendations, the city
will buy a 2009 Ford F-350
diesel truck, fully outfitted
with lights, utility bays and
everything except painted
lettering to pull the edu-
cational "Safety Trailer"
- which is used at schools
- and the Hazmat trailer
unit. The state bid cost
for the Ford pickup truck
is, $43,092. Moses was
told it was a good price
for the vehicle when she
questioned its price.
Battalion Chief Hank
Rossell provided further
information about the truck.
Another piece of equip-
ment is needed in the
building. An ice machine
to replace the one that
broke in the Public Safety
Building is recommend-
ed for approval if there
are funds in the Fine and
Forfeiture Fund and the


bunker gear fund. The
cost of $3,861 will be split
between the police arid fire
departments.
This ice machine can
run by a generator, and the
Public Safety Building is
intended to be a backup for
the Emergency Operations
Center, the committee was
told.
The fire chief also updat-
ed the committee about
progress on a couple of
fronts.
Tunsil said there are now
four volunteers/reservists
in the new program. He
also predicts knowing on
March 1 or soon after, if the
city's ISO rating went from
4 to 3. If the ISO rating
goes down, it means fire
insurance policy rates in
the city can be reduced.
City Council is scheduled
to hear the recommenda-
tions of the advisory com-
mittee at the March 2 regu-
lar meeting, which begins
at 7 p.m. in City Hall.

establishing a marketing plan for the
Ellisville interchange as county officials
try to decide whether a water utility will be
built in the area in the near future. "
In other business, county commission-
ers are scheduled to:
Review a budget amendment from the
sheriff's office to purchase $18,000 worth
of equipment for the mechanic's shop,
purchase five fully-equipped vehicles to
replace aging units at $135,000, purchase
equipment to enhance sheriff's office
communication's software for $55,000 and
requested $32,000 be placed in the oper-
ating account to be used for labor, train-
ing ,and incidentals for networking the
communication software purchase;
Discuss the Richaidson/Anmiie Mattox.
Park line item budget and revise the job
description for the county's recreational
director position and establish a salary for
the position.

scholarships. The commit-
tee, though, amended that
clause to allow schools to
substitute private dona-
tions for all or part of the
need-based requirement,
freeingthose tuition dollars
for other purposes.

another amendment to pre-
vent schools from using
existing private donations
already earmarked for
,,need-based scholarships to,
supplant the tuition dollars.,

its tuition 9 percent for the

others raised their rates

county's science fair held
last month. Student proj-
ects, which encompassed
nearly a dozen categories
such as Biochemistry,
Botany, Earth Science and
Physics, were on display in
the LCCC gymnasium on
Tuesday as approximately
25 judges studied each
carefully.
Most of the 'projects
were creative one asked
if the type of material used
to create parachutes mat-
tered, another asked if
video games can improve
reflexes, while yet another
discussed the various types
of bacteria found in restau-
rant bathrooms.
The best of the best
will be announced today,
when 16 senior division
and 16 junior division win-
ners are announced. The


32 winners selected will be
eligible to compete in the
54th Annual State Science
and Engineering Fair of
Florida on April 15 through
17 in Lakeland. In addition,
first, second and third place
awards will be given out
today, as well as a number
of special awards in various
categories.'


Two students will be
selected to compete at the
2009 Intel International
Science and Engineering
Fair, hosted in Reno, Nev.,
from'May 10 to 15. Each
of those two selections will
. come with award money of
$1,000, courtesy of Florida
Power and Light and PCS
Phosphate.

Mr. Ronald L. "Ronnie" Harris,
59, a lifelong resident of Lake
City, died late Tuesday evening
in the North Florida Regional
Medical Center in Gainesville,
Florida, following a brief illness.
The son of the late Lonnie B. &
Inez Bumsed Harris, Ronnie was
a member of the 1967 graduating
class of Columbia High School.
He worked as a Motor Carrier
Compliance Officer with
the Florida Department of
Transportation until retiring in
2004. In his spare time, Ronnie
enjoyed racing and fishing. He
was a member of the Lake City
Masonic Lodge #27 and the Mt.
Carmel Baptist Church. He is,
survived by a son, Chris Harris
(Tasha) of Lake 'City, Florida;
two daughters, Kim Slanker
(Brian) of Lake City, Florida and
Hunter Harris of White Springs,
Florida; his grandchildren, Caleb
Harris, Seth Slanker and Lindsey
Slanker all of Lake City, Florida.
His best friend Gilbert Durrance.

2009 in the Haven Hospice of
the Suwannee Valley following
an extended illness. A native of
Racine, Wisconsin, she was bornm
on September 26, 1918 to the late
Elmer & Amanda Hoffman. Mrs.
Naidl had been a resident of Lake
City for sixteen years having
moved here from Robert Lee,
Texas. Mrs. Naidl was a retired
bookkeeper having worked for
several department stores in

of all kinds, including afghans,
for friends, family and different
charities. One of her happiest
times was the two years that
she and her husband traveled
around the country in their travel
trailer' Mrs. Naidl was preceded
in death by her husband, Charles
E. Naidl and her brother Robert
E. Hoffman. She is survived
by her children, Fay (Ralph)
Dossett of Lake City, Florida
and George (Martha) Naidl of
Garfield, Arkansas; a sister,
Carol J. Hoffman of Milwaukee,
Wisconsin; sisters-in-law, Joyce
Hoffman ofMerritt Island, Florida
and Kathryn Browne of Racine,
Wisconsin. Five grandchildren
and seven great-grandchildren

Methodist College

transferred to Florida

Jacksonville. He moved
on to Valdosta State and

in at 4-0, fresh off of a one-
hitter by pitcher Megan
Hill, but found trouble in
the top of the fifth inning
as Keystone Heights scored
three runs.
Columbia scored three
runs in the bottom of the
fourth, but it wasn't enough
for the Lady Tigers.
Hill pitched 5'13 innings for
the Lady Tigers;' allowing
nine hits' and three earned
runs. Keystone Heights
scored .two runs off of
