OLUSTEE -
Confederate forces broke
theUnionadvanceatOlustee
on Sunday. The decisive vic-
tory for the Confederacy
saved the state capital of
Tallahassee from certain
destruction and forced the
northern army's retreat
back to Jacksonville.
Under the command
of Brigadier Gen. Joseph
'Finegan, a Confederate
force consisting of 5,000
soldiers from Florida and
Georgia regiments encoun-
tered a Union army of
approximately 5,500 sol-
diers advancing westfwvard
from Jacksonville. The
Federal soldiers, under

Gen. Truman Seymour,
had intended on marching
on Lake City and toward
Tallahassee.
They had not expected to
meet such a firm resistance
near Ocean Pond, east of
Lake City. Confederate
skirmishers were able to
lure Union cavalry onto
the battlefield where they
were met by a much larg-
er Confederate contin-
gency. Confederate militia
exchanged fire with the
Union horsemen until Union
artillery broke the line,
sending the Confederates
falling back for reinforce-
ments. Both sides' artillery
exchanged volleys for a
short while before the full
Confederate force marched
onto the field.
The battle was fully joined
by 2 p.m. as Confederate
.and Federal armies began
to exchange volleys and
Union cavalry used hit-
and-run tactics against the
Confederate militiamen.,
Neither side showed any
hesitancy to continue the
battle however, even as can-
non blasts erupted around
them. The Union soldiers
briefly pushed back the
Confederate force as the

Festival, battle re-enactment well attended

Despite the ominous threat of rain ,. ,
during the weekend, the 31st Annual
Olustee Battle Festival and 33rd
Annual Olustee Battle Re-enactment.
was well attended, according to offi-
cials on Monday.
The three-day festival, which
takes place in February to honor
those who made sacrifices during
the Battle of Olustee in 1864, is Lake
City's largest annual event and a
huge draw for the area. The two-day
downtown Lake City festival and two-
day battlefield activities which take
place in Olustee draw in thousands
of visitors each year and millions of
dollars, to the local economy.
There was some concern expressed
this year because of the poor econo-
my and threat of rain that the event
,would.. dampen the attendance of the
event.
That didn't seem to be the case,
officials said.
The festival on Friday was highly.
attended and even the threat of rain
couldn't keep people away from the,
Saturday morning parade.
"We had a good crowd at the
parade," said Tom Coleman, com-
manding general of the Blue-Gray

Suwannee man killed, trooper

injured in separate wrecks

Suwannee County man was
killed Saturday night when
he lost control of his pickup
truck and it crashed into
a pecan tree, according to
police reports.
Michael Baker,, 48, of,
McAlpin, was killed in the
wreck which occurred
at 10:45 p.m. Saturday
in Suwannee County on
.County Road 252, west of
29th Road.
According to Florida
Highway Patrol reports,
Baker was traveling west
on County Road 252 in a
1997 GMC pickup truck.
His truck traveled across
the eastbound lane onto the
south shoulder of the road-
way, where its front end
struck a telephone box and
fence. The truck traveled
west before striking a pecan
tree with its fropt end and
. coming to rest facing west.
The FHP has launched an


investigation to determine
the cause of the wreck,
reports say.
Trooper injured in
Saturday morning wreck
Earlier Saturday, a Florida
Highway Patrol officer was
injured on Interstate 75
when he was struck by a
wayward trailer, according
to reports.
The trooper, Keith A.
Slanker, 40, of. Lake City,
was working on a traffic
stop. He suffered minor
injuries.
The wreck happened
at 11:59 a.m. Saturday on
1-75 'southbound, about 1.5
miles south of County Road
18.
According to FHP,
reports, a 1999 Freightliner
tractor-trailer driven by
Samuel Hannah, 62, of
Bishopville, S.C., was travel-
ing south on 1-75 in.the out-
side lane, as an unoccupied
2007 Chevrolet Tahoe was
parked on the southbound


outside emergency lane.

The trailer initially struck
the left rear view mirror'
of. the Tahoe. It continued
forward and struck the left
side rearview mirror on
Slanker's patrol car.
The trailer continued for-
ward and struck the left
side of Cobler's truck and.
Slanker.
Slanker was taken to
the Lake City Medical
Center where he was treat-
ed for minor injuries and
released.

The threat of rain
could do little to .
dampen the spirits
of visitors to the
31st Annual Olustee
Battle Festival and 33rd Annual
Battle Re-enactment during the
weekend.
Visitors crowded into
downtown Lake City on Friday
to browse the collection of arts,
crafts and foods that more than
150 vendors had brought with.
them, witnessed the annual
Olustee Parade on Saturday
ahead of the storm clouds,
and came together to cheer on
more than 1,800 Confederate
and Union re-enactors on
Sunday.
More than 22,000 people
visited the battlefield on Friday,
Saturday and Sunday, and many
more likely visited the
downtown area during the two-
day festival.
The event has come a long
way since its humble
beginnings at the Gator Bowl
in Jacksonville. And more than
30 years later, the Battle of
Olustee is still celebrated today.
The small Civil War re-enact-
ment has become Lake City's
largest annual event, and for
more than three decades, the
annual festival and
re-enactment have drawn men
and women together from
across the country and the
world, as past events have fea-
tured re-enactors from England,
Germany and Spain to honor
and remember the sacrifices
made by those whoserved in
our nation's bloodiest war.
And those sacrices again
were honored Sunday. Let us
continue to honor them for as
long as we live, because the
actions of every man on that
battlefield has shaped the Lake
City, the Florida and the United
States that we live in, today.

the Union ship USS Housatonic was
rammed and sunk in Charleston
Harbor, S.C., by the-Confederate

CCSO, ABT work to curb underage drinking

A weekend operation
by the Columbia County
Sheriff's Office and
the Florida Division of
Alcoholic Beverages and
Tobacco (ABT) to curb
underage drinking netted
one arrest as several local
business establishments
were checked for under-
age drinkers.
Friday night ABT
agents and eight Columbia
County School resource
deputies conducted spot
checks at several local
establishments. According
to reports, a 20-year-old
female was found in a local
bar and when questioned


by ABT agents, the woman
provided a false name.

viding false
informa-

law enforcement officer.
She was released on $500
bond.
Columbia County
Sheriff's Office public
information officer Sgt.
Ed Seifert said sheriff's
office officials did not want
to mention the names of
any of the establishments
involved in the investiga-


tion and .noted the opera-
tion will continue.
"We are working close-
ly with these businesses
to address the underage
drinking problem," he said.
"This particular investiga-
tion has been ongoing for
about two weeks. Based
on complaints from citi-
zens, we looked into the
matter."
Several local establish-
ments that sell alcohol were
given written notice by the
Columbia County Sheriff's
Office And ABT, advis-
ing them that they may
be in violation of County
Ordinance 2004-2637, sec-
tion 10-35, if persons under
the age of 21 were allowed
to enter their premises


and/or be allowed to con-
sume alcoholic beverages.
"We did follow-ups this
past weekend," Seifert
said, noting less than 10
local business establish-
ments, including bars or
restaurants which serve
alcohol, were included in
the operation.
Seifert said the establish-
ment where Wilson was
arrested will not face any
charges or fines from the
sheriff's office, but he was
uncertain whether the ABT
was going to charge or fine
the establishment.
"ABT is the enforce-
ment arm and I don't know
if they are going to take
further action against that
establishment," he said.

Michael Baker
Mr. Michael Baker, 48, of
McAlpin, FL died on Saturday,
February 14, 2009 from injuries
sustained in a motor vehicle
accident. He was born in Ft.
Lauderdale, FL and moved to
McAlpin in 1983. He was,
employed in the Service
Department at Hopkins Motor
Company for the past four years.
Mr. Baker enjoyed anything that
had to do with motors, motorcycle
racing, boating and hunting. He
was of the Baptist faith and was
preceded in death by his father,
Bill Baker, Sr.. Mr. Baker is
survived by his wife,. Wanda
Ann Baker, Lake City; son,
Christopher Michael Baker, Lake
City, daughters, Samantha Lynn

Q: What are mammograms for?


A: Mammograms are x-ray images of the breast. They are
used to detect subtle abnormalities within the breast tissue
in a effort to diagnose breast cancers when they are smaller and
more manageable. The actual procedure entails having the breast
pressed between the mammography plates, then the image is
taken, much like a regular x-ray. Other breast imaging studies

pound weight class and
led Columbia High's girls
weightlifting team to third
place in the FHSAA Finals
competition at River Ridge
High in New Port Richey
on Saturday.
Gomez's first-place fin-
ish was bolstered by Tara
Stephens, who placed sec-


ond in the 119-pound weight
class, and Alaina Timmons,
who was third in the
139-pound weight class.
The threesome com-
bined for 16 team points,
which put the Lady Tigers
close behind New Smyrna
Beach High's second-place
total of 19.
Spruce Creek High
scored 30 points to extend
its run of state titles to six
years. Port Charlotte High

Fort White High Indians
begin their season today
with a new 'look under
first-year head coach Chad
Bonds.
Bonds comes to Fort
White with an extensive
coaching background.
He previously coached at
Branford High, where his
team won a district title,
regional quarterfinal, and


lost in a regional semifinal
playoff game.
Fort White will get .to
test out its line-up today at
7 p.m. at Lafayette High.
Bonds' other coaching
experience includes junior
varsity stint at Wakulla High
and two years as the head
coach of Carrabelle High,
where his team reached the
district runner-up position
in his second year.
The Indians return
seven starters from last
years squad, including six


seniors. Alex Gilmer is the
only junior that's a return-
ing starter and will pitch
and play in the infield for
Fort White.
Other returning start-
ers include seniors' Dustin
Cason, Tyler Sherrod, Bo
Kirby, Andy Gonzalez, Chad
Evans and Matt Hatcher.
Cason plays outfield and
pitches for the Indians;
Sherrod plays outfield;
Bo. Kirby is 'an infielder;,
Gonzalez is an infielder/
pitcher combo; Evans plays


outfield and pitches; and,
Matt Hatcher plays first
base and pitches.
The Indians should get
some help from other play-
ers as well, and Bonds
expects first-year varsity
player Levi Hatcher to be
one of those players.
"Levi will probably han-
dle a lot of our catching
duties," Bonds said. "He's
also a guy that can hit in the
middle of our line-up. He's
an RBI guy."
Along with Levi Hatcher,


Bonds expects Matt
Hatcher, Gilmer and sopho-
more Justin Kortessis to be
the leaders of the Indians.
"They each bring some-
thing different to the table,"
Bonds said. "Alex has
logged several innings for
us. I expect good things
from him. Matt has been on
the team. He was a member
of the district championship
team, and he's been around

It was a crosstown shoot-
out between Gainesville
High and Eastside High
on Saturday night in the
District 4-5A championship
game from Lake City gym.
The Hurricanes, led by
T.J. Hall, came out hot and
led throughout in a 65-52
victory over the Rams.
Hall had 10 of his game-
high 22 points in the first
quarter as the Hurricanes
(24-3) pulled out to 20-6 lead
against the Rams (23-6).
Coach Herman Williams
pulled his team over early in
the second quarter, and the
Rams responded after the
pep talk with a 12-3 run.
"I told them we needed

to look to score," Williams
said. -"We were sleepy in
the first quarter, but we
have young guys."
The Rams pulled it back
within 27-23 to close the first
half behind Jerrod Owens'
eight first-half points.
Gainesville started the
third quarter on a run,
but the Rams were able to
close the gap back down
to five before the start of
the fourth quarter with the
Hurricanes on top 46-41.
However, Hall command-
ed an inside presence in
the second half and wore
down the Rams. Hall had
10 second-half points as the
Hurricanes pulled away in
the fourth quarter to cap-
ture the district champion-
ship.


Gainesville's Matt Huber
hit a couple of free throws
down the stretch to close
out the Rams and finished
with 12 points. Greg Gantt
had nine for the Hurricanes
and Thomas Laerke came
off the bench to score nine,
as well.
Eastside's Owens led
the Rams with 18 points.
He was followed in scor-
ing by Andrea Moore (11),
Epharion Bryant (9) and
Caesar Wright (6).
"We played a great game
on both ends of the floor,"
Gainesville coach Kelly
Beckham said. -"We did a
great job to get the ball
inside, and our big men did
a great job.
"I'm just real. proud of
this team."

Bill Sanders will be the
featured speaker during
today's Columbia County
School District Positive
Parenting Program.
Sanders, an author of
more than 15 parenting
and teen books and con-
tributor to the "Chicken
Soup for the Soul" series,
will present his program
"Building Successful
Families." The program
will have three presenta-
tions throughout the day
two presentations open
to the public will' take
place at' 1.0 a.m. and 6:30
p.m., and a 3 p.m. presen-
tation will be offered to
district teachers.
All programs will take
place at. the Columbia
County -School Board
Auditorium and admission
to the' event is free. The
program is sponsored by
the Title I District Parent
Involvement, Exceptional
Student Education, and
Early Learning Coalition
of Florida's Gateway, Inc.
This is the second Positive
'Parenting Program the
school district has hosted
during this school year.
During the 'event,
Sanders will discuss topics
such as understanding the
children of today, how to.
open communication chan-
nels and how to, develop
teamwork in the family.
Sanders, who has been
speaking since 1978 and
has appeared on-stage with
the likes of Paul Harvey,
Terry Bradshaw and presi-
dents Gerald Ford and
Ronald Reagan, will speak
on topics that are relevant
to parents of any-aged chil-
dren.

Throughout the five days of the week, students in all grade levels were asked tq bring in

today at 7 p.m. at the School Board
Administrative Complex, Room 227.'
The purpose of the meeting is to
discuss budget issues. No action will

Eastside Elementary School
Fifth grade students have been
studying economics at Eastside
Elementary School. They have
created their own business where
-they are selling decorated pencils
and notebooks in order to raise
money for special fifth grade
activities. The students really have.
enjoyed learning about supply and
demand, and are able to experi-
ence first-hand the different jobs
when creating and selling items to
consumers.
Kindergarten students celebrat-
ed the 100th day.of school recently.
Students were involved in many
activities throughout the day that
involved the number 100, including
stories and math activities.
Students in grades-3 through 5
have had the opportunity to receive
additional computer time. Mrs.
Natalie Ward, technology teacher,
has helped students with their read-
ing and math skills on programs
such as Practice Planet and FCAT
Explorer. The students really enjoy
using the computers to become
stronger in math, reading and
science.

There is a lot of reading going on
at Fort White Elementary School.

Lake City Community College
Three CHS students receive
scholarships from Take Stock in
Children
Three Columbia High School
students were signed to the Take
Stock in Children program on
February 5 at CHS. The Lake City
Community College Foundation's
Take Stock in Children has part-
nered with Columbia High School,
Florida Crown, and the Richardson
Community Center Board to provide
scholarships and mentors to
deserving children at Columbia High
School.
The CHS students are: John Rolle,
William Mills and Quanisha Wilson
and their respective CHS mentors
are Melinda.Moses, David Kraus,
and Linda Taylor.
The Take Stock in Children
program provides the opportunity
for students to EARN tuition
scholarships by agreeing to stay
drug and crime-free, abide by the
school's code. of conduct, maintain
at least a 2.0 GPA and meet with
'their mentor at least 30 minutes a
week. TSIC also gives local citizens
the opportunity to contribute to a
local child's scholarship fund and/or


serve as a mentor. If you would

Richardson Middle School
Visit the Columbia County
Public Library during the month of
February to see the student work of
sixth grade science teachers Jennifer
Conway and Kenny Johnson. In
honor of Black History Month,
students researched African
American scientists and inventors
and created informational posters
about these illustrious men and
women. Mrs. Conway's students
were zoo keepers at the RMS library
when they displayed and explained
the models of various kinds of
human and plant cells that they
created and researched. They
displayed their models and answered
questions from people who visited
the zoo to see these "animodels."
At the Columbia County Science
Fair, a number of RMS students took
home awards and will compete at
the Regional Science Fair. Courtney
Parker won the Bones Thomas
Award, and RJ. Adler, Hannah
Collins and Luke Minshew all won
first place. Jacob Wheeler placed
second, and Adrian Farmer and John
O'Neal placed third.
The Wolf Pride Band under Mr.
Keen had six musicians chosen to
perform with the North Florida
Honor Band. Congratulations to
Jennifer Hoang, Amanda Simmons,
Ikey Coker, Bryant Mitchell, Noah
Henderson, and Josh Williamson. The
Chorus, directed by Mrs. Robertson,
is working hard on a production of the
popular musical, "'The Music Man."
