Local man faces drug charges


Officials discovered
marijuana, cocaine
in man's house.

A Columbia County man was
arrested Wednesday evening
after law enforcement officials
allegedly found more than two
pounds of marijuana and a sig-
nificant amount of cocaine in
the man's home. according to


police reports.

was charged
with possession
:of marijuana
Parker with intent to
, sell and posses-
sion of cocaine in connection
with the incident.
Parker was arrested after the
Multi-Jurisdictional Task /Force
executed a search warrant at
his home, located in Southeast


Columbia County near County
Road 245. The task force is com-
posed of representatives from the
Columbia County Sheriff's Office,
Lake City Police Department,
the Florida Department of Law
Enforcement, and the Drug
Enforcement Administration. As
a result of the search warrant,
authorities were able to confiscate
more than two pounds of mari-
juana and five grams of cocaine.
"It's been a lengthy investi-
gation," said Columbia County
Sheriff's, Office public informa-


tion officer Sgt. Ed Seifert.
Seifert said Parket was
released from. the Columbia
County Jail after posting bond
Thursday. Parker's bond, amount
was not available at press time.
Authorities did not seize the
home after Parker was charged
and arrested.
. "The home has been released
the homeowner," Seifert said.
"I'm not sure if he (Parker) rent-
ed or was buying the house, but
the home has been turned over
to the rightful owner."

FALLING CREEK -
An afternoon brush fire
destroyed two structures
and damaged another before
it consumed close to four
acres of northern Columbia
County property Thursday.

County Fire Department and
Florida Division of Forestry
responded to the blaze on
Falling Creek Road in the
northern part of the county
and spent close to three hours
on site trying to douse the fire.
The Columbia County Fire
Department responded to the
blaze with three engines, two
tankers and four brush trucks
as well as a total of 16 firefight-
ers, including paid firefighters
and reservists. The Florida
Division of Forestry had an
engine and plow on scene

scene for about three hours,"
said Columbia County Fire

Crawford said the fire

Most of the recent Black
History Month programs
in Columbia County have
focused on pioneers and
people who lived through
the Civil Rights Movement.
This weekend a local
afterschool program has
decided to honor an area
high school students as
part of its Black History
Month observation.
The EXCEL Afterschool
Tutorial and Mentoring
program will have a youth
extravaganza honoring
Cordez King, a Columbia
High School 12-grader.
"He's an outstand-
ing youth dignitary," said
Bernice Presley, a Lake
City Middle School teacher,
who works with the EXCEL
Afterschool program.
The youth extravaganza
program has been sched-
uled for 3 p.m. Saturday
at Trinity United Methodist
Church, where the Rey.
John Beasley is the pastor,
248 NE Martin Luther King
St.
The keynote speaker is
Minister Jan Harrison, asso-
ciate minister at Old Day
Springs Baptist Church-of
Lake City.
"Everyone is invited to
attend the event," Presley
said. "Cordez was the only
Lake City youth to attend
the Democratic National
Convention in Denver,
Colorado. It's important
to hold this event because
anytime we can highligliht
the achievement of our
young people and make
them feel very special, we
should do that I feel thafs
most important at this time.

weekend

annual re-enactment
of the Battle of
Olustee is always a
larger-than-life event. Visitors
-have recognized this for more
than three decades, readers of
a noted Florida magazine have

available in our own backyard
from the 1989 film "Glory."

where he retired in 1988. He was
an active member of the Lake
City Church of God for 54 years,.

Trustee and Treasurer for' 47
years and "Young at Heart"
director. He loved his family
and friends, spending time with
- children and grandchildren. He
loved to garden and was always
helping others. He enjoyed

willing to do whatever he could.
He was preceded in death by

Olivera continues Community Concerts season

World-renowned organist
Hector Olivera will play
in concert at Lake City
Community College at 7:30
p.m.'Feb. 20. The concert
will take place at the
college's Levy Performing
Arts Center.
Olivera brings with him
a Roland Two-Manual
"Atelier" Orchestral
Organ and a custom built
Rodgers Four-Manual
Classical Touring Organ.
His musical selections
are performed from a


variety of genres. Using his
incredible music machines,
Olivera sound like a total
orchestra.
Inspired by his love for
the French pipe organ
Hector Olivera recently
designed an organfor
the purpose of touring.
The impressive four-
manual'Rodgers Trillium
Masterpiece,' complete
with two 1,000-pound
speakers, was custom built
by Rodgers Organs in
Hillsboro, Oregon.
Hector continues to
entertain audiences


with both solo classical
literature and his own
orchestral transcriptions,
now released on DVD and
more than 20 classical,
contemporary, and film
score CDs.
Although he is most
famous for his technical
proficiency, Hector's
effect on audiences

of Basketball
Coaches
recently
formed and one of its
first acts was to establish
a "Court of Legends."
The Court of Legends
will honor players,
coaches and teams
from high school, junior
college and colleges.
The initial class was
announced in November.
The Court of Legends
dinner ceremony is April
18 at the Rosen Plaza
Hotel in Orlando.
The inaugural class
includes 13 coaches, nine
players and three. teams
the Florida national
champions of 2005-06
and 2006-07, and the
Sarasota Booker FIAA
state champions in
1966-67, which went
35-0 and averaged 107.1'
points per game.
The FIAA was the
Florida Interscholastic
Athletic Association,
which governed
African-American high
school basketball.

The seeding has stood
up and will bring out the
best when the District 4-5A
basketball tournament con-
tinues today at Columbia
High.
,Columbia plays Eastside
/High at 7:45 p.m., pre-
ceded by, Gainesville High
vs. Forest High at 6 p.m.
Admission is $5, as set by
the FHSAA.
Columbia, the No. 3
seed, advanced with a 57-48
win over Lake Weir High
on Tuesday. No. 2 Eastside
held off a pumped-up
No. 7 Vanguard High, 55-49,
in the final game for legend-
ary coach Jim Haley.
Gainesville, which went
12-0 in district play to earn
the No. 1 seed, is ranked
third in the Class 5A state
poll. Eastside is No. 9.
Forest High. beat
Leesburg High, 60-42, for
the chance to take on the
Hurricanes.
It will be the third district
final or semifinal meeting
,between the Tigers and
Rams in the four years of
the seven-team league.
After Columbia swept
Eastside in the 2005-06
regular season, the Rams
won the tournament final

Mavin hit a 3-pointer for the
Rams at the buzzer to send
the game into overtime and
Eastside won, 57-52.
Dont'ae Davis scored
24 points in the second
Eastside game and poured
in 35 in the 'district tourna-
ment opener.
Hosford said it will take
more than that to make
Saturday's final.
"If we count on 35 from
Dont'ae against Eastside,
we are in trouble," Hosford
said. "We have to get more
guys active on offense and
defense to beat a very good
Eastside team.
"The kids are excited
about playing and I hoped it
is a packed house." :
Both games will. be

Columbia High girls
weightlifting has a contin-
gent of eight heading to the
FHSAA state finals to take
on the titanium ceiling that
is Spruce Creek High.
River Ridge High is the
host school for the com-
petition, which begins at


10:30 a.m. Saturday. The
early morning is reserved
for weigh-in and a coaches
meeting.
Columbia placed fifth at
state last year and the Lady
Tigers have set their sights
higher. The main stumbling
block is Spruce Creek,
which has won state all five
years since girls weightlift-
ing became a sanctioned
sport
"We feel good about
taking eight and the girls
are really proud of them-
selves," CHS head coach


Mitch Shoup said. 'The
girls have worked hard the
last two weeks and we look
for their weight to go up
from sectionals.
'To be on the platform
at the end of the day; that's
what they are all working
for."
Coming off a second-
place finish last year,
Celeste Gomez is far and
away the favorite to win the
183-pound class. Her 410
qualifying total (210 bench
press-200 clean and jerk)
is 35 pounds more than the


next lifter.
"It is still the same, you
have got to keep working
hard," Gomez said. "Some
girls could be faking their
totals. You don't try to be all
cocky about it, because you
could mess up a lift. I would
love to come in first I
worked so hard; if I don't, I
know I tried my best"
Tara Stephens also is
making her third trip to
state and expects to benefit
from the experience. She

Columbia High soft-
ball finished week one
with three wins, follow-
ing an 8-0 decision over
visiting Lafayette High on
Thursday.
It ,was a typical tight
game between the Lady
Tigers and the Hornets
for four innings, with CHS
leading 1-0.
Columbia added two
runs in the fifth inning
and added five more in the
sixth.
The one run would have
been enough for pitcher
Megan Hill, who fired a
five-hitter. After allowing
four singles in the first two


innings, Hill retired 14 bat-
ters in a row and 18 of the
last 19.
She struck out four,
'walked none and snared a
couple of line drives back
to the mound.
Hill reached on an error
to start the fourth inning.
Pinch-runner Colby Craig
stole second base, moved
to third on a wild pitch and
scored on a sacrifice fly by
Holly Crumpton.

scored 'in the fifth inning,

Columbia got the merry-

"We started putting the
ball in play," CHS head
coach Jimmy Williams
said. "Our run scoring has
been good and our defense
is finally catching up with
our offense."

Lady Indians fell 5-3 to
the Gainesville High Lady
Hurricanes on Thursday.
The Lady Indians fell
behind in the first inning
when Sydney Swanson
crossed the plate on a
Grace Rohan RBI, howev-
er, Fort White' tied things
up when Alexi Hodson bat-
ted in Alison Wrench in the
bottom of the" first.


The second inning would
be the kicker for the Lady
Hurricanes as they scored
three runs, including two
runs off. of another Rohan
at-bat.
Rohan finished with
three RBIs.
The Lady Indians gave
up a run off a walk in the
third inning to go down 5-1
before Hodson's first career
home run pulled Fort White
within three runs.'
The Lady Indians pulled
one run closer in the bot-


tom of the sixth as Hodson
picked up her third hit and
second RBI to help Kayla
Williams cross the plate,
but Fort White wasn't able
to close the gap in the final
inning. ,
Taylor Douglass pitched
a complete game allowing
six hits and five earned
runs. She struck out six
batter and walked four..
The Lady Indians fell to

Jessica Bullock dropped
15 pounds and qualified sec-
ond for state with 155-160-
315 in the 139-pound weight
class. Bullock placed ninth
last year.
"'The girl is in front of
me by 20 pounds, so it
depends on how the meet
goes," Bullock said. "I will
be happy to place at all this
year. That was my goal.
This is the biggest group
we have ever taken and we
all want to place."
Jennifer Kondrach and.
Alaina Timmons are both
high qualifiers and have
made state from different
approaches.
Kondrach,. a senior, is
tied for sixth qualifying at
119 pounds (140-130-270).
"This is my fourth year
and the past two years I
just barely missed out going
to state," Kondrach said.
"I was really scared and I
knew I would do anything
to get there."
Timmons (150-160-310) is
tied for third at 139 pounds,
as a junior.
"This is my first year of
weightlifting," Timmons
said.
"A lot of girls encour-
aged me to come out and I
wanted to get in shape. It is
very exciting' and I am look-
ing forward to it."
Phoebe Johnson (110-125-
235 at 110 pounds), Amber
Thomas (125-135-260 at 129
pounds) and Ashley Shaw
(115-135-250 at 129 pounds)
were solid qualifiers among
the 27 members in their
weight classes.
Gomez and Stephens
hope to pave the way to a
team trophy, one that all the
lifters can share.
"I hope we win it this
year," Stephens said. "We
have got a great chance to
finish second."
"It would-be nice to come
up first, but if we get a
medal as a team, I would
love that," Gomez said. "I
am proud of all the girls,
even the ones not going. We
all worked so hard."

On October 1, 1984, the City Coun-
cil of Lake City, Florida adopted Or-
dinance No. 84-532, which establish-
ed the policy of the City to promote
equal opportunity to obtain adequate
housing by all persons, regardless of
race, color, ancestry, national origin,
religion, sex, marital status or' age.
On January 4, 1988, the City Council
of Lake City, Florida adopted Ordi-
nance -No. 88-604 amending Ordi-
nance No. 84-532 to add physical
handicap as a protected class from
discrimination in the sale and rental
of housing. On February 18, 1991,
the City Council of Lake City, Flori-
da adopted Ordinance No. 91-690
amending Ordinance No. 84-532 to
amend the definition of handicap and
to add familial 'status as a protected
class from discrimination in the sale
and rental of housing.
