rich people were in the minority, she said.
They were the elite.
"Cracker Women" were "plain folk," or
the ordinary working class. They were
barely literate, "renowned to be ugly," but
also known for their lively spirit. The third
group were also vitally important in the
day, Revels said, but are often overlooked
in the annals of history. It was mostly the
elite who could afford the luxury of time
and other resources to write about their
lives, Revels said.
She said not everyone in Florida sup-
ported the Confederacy, although Florida
was the state with the highest percentage
of eligible men who enlisted in the war on
that side.
Many women who started out support-
ing the war became-disillusioned after a
time and even helped Confederate draft
dodgers to hide in the swamps. Some of
those women ended up being held in a
stockade when the men they supported
could not be rounded up, Revels said.
The war forced women into every pos-
sible duty in Florida, she said, including
burying the dead. She shared a story in that
regard from her hometown of Madison.
"After the Battle of Olustee," she said, "the
army was coming back through (Madison)
and the soldiers' bodies were being taken
off to be buried. And this old lady saw the
body of a young boy in a coffin.
"She went up to him and said, 'My son
gave his life for Virginia. This boy gave
his life for Florida. Let me kiss him for his
mother.' And she kissed him and covered
his face with a handkerchief before he was
buried."
Lake City women were known for being
hospitable to everyone, Revels said.

after the artist looked at the north and east
walls of City Hall.
"I think the north wall is the winner,"
Goodson said. "It is the' most ideal. It is
the best bet."
A "ballpark" cost of $28,000 is not cur-
rently funded completely, although the
Sesquicentennial Committee has dedicated
$5,000 toward it, said Harvey Campbell of
the Tourist Development Council. There is
a $1,000 cost for Goodson to create a ren-
dering and there is a $1,000 monthly fee
for the scissor-lift the artist will use for an
estimated three months as he paints.
Thatputs the tentative cost now at about
$31,000 to $32,000.
Goodson reminded the committee that
he recommends treating his murals every
two years with a protective clear-coat of
chemicals to prevent damage from ultra-
violet rays.
The History and Heritage group nar-


rowed the subjects for various vignettes,
which would be placed between win-
dows on the wall that measures about
91-feet wide by a range of 42- to 45-feet tall,
because the roof is staggered on top. It is
not one, flat level.
Agriculture,, transportation, natural
resources, faith and religion, places, events
and education are the main topics now.
Goodson asked for sketches and written
descriptions of what each committee mem-
ber envisions for the mural.
"He's not going to follow it anyway," said
James Montgomery, who funded the first
mural. "He didn't follow anything we put
down before, but his way was better (than
what was suggested.)"
Goodson will continue creating drafts,
until a rendering is selected.
The project may start as early as April
and it "is hoped to be" completed by the
Fourth of July.

The impact of immigration, in religious,
economic and governmental service terms,
were discussed by Worrell as he spoke of
how immigration in the country is also
affecting religion.
"America is still the place of choice for
people leaving their country and looking
for a better life," he said.
The theme of the program was "Quest
for' Black Citizenship in the Americas"
and Worrell quoted statistics verifying the
increase of people migrating to the Unites
States. '
Worrell, who noted he tends to see


things through the aspect of religion, also
referenced a list of seven benefits he com-
piled onr the benefits of being a U.S. citizen
- voting rights were listed as the first ben-
efit. He said the mass transfer of people
from country to country has prophetic sig-
nificance and quoted scripture from Dani'el
12: 4 of the Bible as his reference. ,
The program, which lasted nearlyl:ai
hour, was done in sessions listed as Caring
Through Fellowship, Caring Through
Worship and United We Stand. Those
program, features included musical selec-
tions and audience participation during

Tracy Revels, Ph.D., autographs a copy of
her award-winning book 'Grander in Her
Daughters' for Pat McAlhrty, director of
the Lake City-Columbia County Historical
Museum. Revels gave a lecture at Lake City
Community College on Wednesday about
Florida women in the Civil War, which is the
topic of her book.

"In Florida, you weren't often sure if the
soldier who stumbled up to your door was
a Confederate soldier or a Union soldier,"
she said. "After the Battle of Olustee,
Lake City women were praised for being
equally generous to the wounded Union
and Confederate soldiers."
One woman captured it by writing, "Just
to be fair, I fed them out of the same
spoon," Revels said.
The author shared many other moving
and entertaining stories with the aqdi-
ence, and she was thanked with a round of
applause at the end.

The Columbia County
Branch of the NAACP
will join 1,700 units of the
organization in celebrating
its 100th anniversary this
year, hosting celebrations
throughout the year. The
organization was founded
Feb. 12, 1909.
'The NAACP's concept
of diversity goes beyond
that. of race, creed, eth-
nicity and gender," said
John Mayo, president
of the Columbia County
National Association for the
Advancement of Colored
People. "Employees of the
NAACP have the unique
opportunity to pioneer into
the 21st Century to meet
the challenge of eliminating
racial prejudice and remov-
ing all barriers of racial dis-
crimination."

the first Columbia County
Branch of the NAACP in
the early 1930s.
"The NAACP has made
a tremendous difference to
Columbia County especially
in the minority community,"
Presley said. "At one time,
in the early 1960s, we only
have two paved streets and
a. lawsuit against the city
resulted in a court-order
:compliance agreement
which led to paved streets
and sidewalks, sewer lines
and street lights. It elimi-
nated the outdoor toilets
and it resulted in the first
African-American being
elected to the city council,
Samuel Thompson. That
was done because of the
work of the NAACP."
He said a class-action law-
suit against the Columbia
County School Board
and the Columbia County

Cowboy retired from the Navy
Seabees after 23 years of service
and was a member of the VFW.
.He loved horses, living on a

fullest. He was of the Methodist
'faith and was preceded 'in death
by one brother, Bill Bechler.
Cowboy is survived by his wife
of 18 years, Marian DelaRosa;
three sons, Chad Bechler, Canada;
Glen and Billy Stephens, New
Orleans; one daughter, Glenda

FBI investigating 530
corporate fraud cases
WASHINGTON The FBI
is conducting, more than 500
investigations of corporate
fraud amid the financial
meltdown, FBI Deputy
Director John Pistole told the
Senate Judiciary Committee
on Wednesday.
Investigators are tackling
an even bigger mountain
of mortgage fraud cases in
which hundreds of millions,
,of dollars may have been
swindled from the system, he
told lawmakers.
Pistole says there are
530 active corporate fraud
investigations, and 38 of
them involve some of the
biggest names in corporate
finance-in cases directly
related to the current
economic crisis.
Additionally, the FBI has
more than 1.800 mortgage
fraud investigations, more
than double the number of
such cases just two years
ago.
Mexico authorities hunt
gangs after killings

Terrace and Northeast Montana Street. According to Lake City Police Department preliminary
reports, Jones jumped off his motorcycle and slid on the pavement to avoid a collision with a
vehicle driven by Laura Richards, 51, of Lake City. Both drivers were charged in connection
with the incident. Jones was charged with having no motorcycle endorsement on his driver's
license, while Richards was charged with violation of right of way.

have been culled from 88
applicants, Reynolds said

commitment to Florida last
year.
Tillotson hit .313 last
year with 25 hits, 18 runs,
14 RBIs, seven doubles,
one triple and one home
run. Lawrence hit .318 with
28 hits, 21 runs, 22 RBIs,
10 doubles, one triple and
three home runs.
Against Madison,
Lawrence was 4-for-4 with
two RBIs and Tillotson was
2-for-3. Both scored runs.
Hook will be counted on
at second base when one
of the starters is on the

its first trip to the state play-
offs since 1999. The Lady
Tigers play at Bartram Trail
High at 7 p.m. today.
BartramTrail won District
3-5A, while Columbia was
runner-up in District 4.
Columbia (17-9) entered


the district tournament as
the No. 5 seed. The Lady
Tigers beat No. 4 Vanguard
High 58-54, then knocked
off No. 1 Leesburg High,
63-61. No. 2 Eastside High
won the championship
game, 53-43.
Columbia point guard
Sharmayne Edwards scored
71 points in the three games.
DaBrea Hill averaged just
under 10 points per game
and Shaniqua Henry aver-

runs. Scott hit .254 with a
couple of doubles and five
RBIs.

would add a left-handed bat

Sweat, who hit .337 last
year with 28 hits, 23 RBIs,

run, has moved from left to

Despite a Columbia win-
ning percentage of .694
in regular-season league
play, District 4-5A has been
owned by Gainesville High
and Forest High. The two
teams finished 1-2 the past
three years.
The Tigers split with
both last year, but lost in the
second round of the district
tournament to Gainesville.
Leesburg knocked CHS
out in the semifinals the
previous two seasons.
Eastside, Vanguard and
Lake Weir high schools


also are in the district
'"We put a lot of empha-
sis on that No. 1 or No. 2
seed," Bennett said. "With
No. 1 you get a first-round
bye and with No. 2 you
get to play the No. 7 seed.
There is not anybody we
can overlook."
Bennett said the 2009
Tigers have the most team
speed since he has been
coach.
"A lot of them run well
and we will be aggressive
on the bases," Bennett said.
"We want to apply as much
pressure on the defense as
possible."
With the starting infield
returning and the meat of
the line-up back, Columbia
could climb into the.playoff
picture.
"We are a little bit
more seasoned and so far
I have been really, really
pleased," Bennett said. 'We
had a good summer and a
decent fall with our weight
training. -
