rich people were in the minority, she said.
They were the elite.
"Cracker Women" were "plain folk," or
the ordinary working class. They were
barely literate, "renowned to be ugly," but
also known for their lively spirit. The third
group were also vitally important in the
day, Revels said, but are often overlooked
in the annals of history. It was mostly the
elite who could afford the luxury of time
and other resources to write about their
lives, Revels said.
She said not everyone in Florida sup-
ported the Confederacy, although Florida
was the state with the highest percentage
of eligible men who enlisted in the war on
that side.
Many women who started out support-
ing the war became-disillusioned after a
time and even helped Confederate draft
dodgers to hide in the swamps. Some of
those women ended up being held in a
stockade when the men they supported
could not be rounded up, Revels said.
The war forced women into every pos-
sible duty in Florida, she said, including
burying the dead. She shared a story in that
regard from her hometown of Madison.
"After the Battle of Olustee," she said, "the
army was coming back through (Madison)
and the soldiers' bodies were being taken
off to be buried. And this old lady saw the
body of a young boy in a coffin.
"She went up to him and said, 'My son
gave his life for Virginia. This boy gave
his life for Florida. Let me kiss him for his
mother.' And she kissed him and covered
his face with a handkerchief before he was
buried."
Lake City women were known for being
hospitable to everyone, Revels said.

after the artist looked at the north and east
walls of City Hall.
"I think the north wall is the winner,"
Goodson said. "It is the' most ideal. It is
the best bet."
A "ballpark" cost of $28,000 is not cur-
rently funded completely, although the
Sesquicentennial Committee has dedicated
$5,000 toward it, said Harvey Campbell of
the Tourist Development Council. There is
a $1,000 cost for Goodson to create a ren-
dering and there is a $1,000 monthly fee
for the scissor-lift the artist will use for an
estimated three months as he paints.
Thatputs the tentative cost now at about
$31,000 to $32,000.
Goodson reminded the committee that
he recommends treating his murals every
two years with a protective clear-coat of
chemicals to prevent damage from ultra-
violet rays.
The History and Heritage group nar-
rowed the subjects for various vignettes,
which would be placed between win-
dows on the wall that measures about
91-feet wide by a range of 42- to 45-feet tall,
because the roof is staggered on top. It is
not one, flat level.
Agriculture,, transportation, natural
resources, faith and religion, places, events
and education are the main topics now.
Goodson asked for sketches and written
descriptions of what each committee mem-
ber envisions for the mural.
"He's not going to follow it anyway," said
James Montgomery, who funded the first
mural. "He didn't follow anything we put
down before, but his way was better (than
what was suggested.)"
Goodson will continue creating drafts,
until a rendering is selected.
The project may start as early as April
and it "is hoped to be" completed by the
Fourth of July.

Interim

good call
by city
The city's decision
to suspend the
search for a new
police chief under
the direction of the
outgoing city manager was the
correct move. Hiring an interim
chief now and allowing Lake
City's new city manager to ,
hire his or her own permanent

sense.
It's the most logical business
decision to ensure a quality
Shire that meshes seamlessly
With the new administration. If
there's not a common ground,
.and the city manager and the
police chief don't click, this
S area of city government will
ever reach its full potential.
Also, it's unfair for a potential
candidate to interview for and
potentially be offered a position
When he or she does not know
who the boss would be.
The relationship between
the city manager and the
,-police chief must be airtight.
There can be no dissent; and
"teamwork, values and vision
must be in step for the situation
to thrive.
We now have the opportunity
Sfor this to occur.
Hiring the correct candidate

the early 1930s.
"The NAACP has made
a tremendous difference to
Columbia County especially
in the minority community,"
Presley said. "At one time,
in the early 1960s, we only
have two paved streets and

resulted in a court-order

which led to paved streets
and sidewalks, sewer lines
and street lights. It elimi-
nated the outdoor toilets
and it resulted in the first
African-American being
elected to the city council,
Samuel Thompson. That
was done because of the
work of the NAACP."

Senate panel gives
Panetta OK for CIA post
WASHINGTON A
congressional aide says
the Senate Intelligence
Committee has given Leon
Panetta the thumbs up to
head the CIA.
Intelligence Committee
spokesman Philip LaVelle
says approval came
Wednesday during a
closed meeting of the
committee. Panetta was
President Barack Obama's
surprise pick to head the
intelligence, but the Senate
panel approved him without
opposition.
Panetta has no direct
intelligence-gathering or
analysis experience. Obama
said he was selected
because of his managerial
skills and ability to repair
the agency's relationship
with Congress after the two
tumultuous terms of former
President George W. Bush.
Peanut company owner
refuses to testify
WASHINGTON The -
owfier of a peanut company
refused to testify to Congress
on Wednesday amid the-
disclosure that he urged his
workers to ship bacteria-
tainted products, pleading
with federal health officials
that he should be able: "turn
the raw peanuts on the floor
into money."
Stewart Parnell, owner of
Peanut Corp. of America,
repeatedly invoked his
right not to incriminate
himself before the House
subcommittee holding
a hearing on a national
salmonella outbreak blamed
on his company. The outbreak-
has sickened some 600
people, may be linked to nine
deaths the latest reported
in Ohio on Wednesday and
has resulted in one of the
largest product recalls of more
1,800 items.
FBI investigating 530
corporate fraud cases
WASHINGTON The FBI
is conducting, more than 500
investigations of corporate
fraud amid the financial
meltdown, FBI Deputy
Director John Pistole told the
Senate Judiciary Committee
on Wednesday.
Investigators are tackling
an even bigger mountain
of mortgage fraud cases in
which hundreds of millions,
,of dollars may have been
swindled from the system, he
told lawmakers.
Pistole says there are
530 active corporate fraud
investigations, and 38 of
them involve some of the
biggest names in corporate
finance-in cases directly
related to the current
economic crisis.
Additionally, the FBI has
more than 1.800 mortgage
fraud investigations, more
than double the number of
such cases just two years
ago.
Mexico authorities hunt
gangs after killings
MEXICO CITY -Mexican
authorities found five'
abandoned bullet-riddled
and bloodstained vehicles on
Wednesday, fueling their hunt
for drug gang killers following
a wave of border-region
slaying and clashes with ,
soldiers that left 21 people
dead, an official said.
The hours-long skirmishes
around the town of Villa
Ahumada on Tuesday were
part of a wave of drug
violence that has engulfed
parts of Mexico and
has even spilled across
the border as the army
confronts savage narcotics
cartels that are flush with
drug money and guns from
the U.S.
20 dead in Afghan
assaults, Taliban blamed
KABUL Taliban
militants killed 20 people
in a coordinated attack on
three government buildings
in Kabul Wednesday,-
launching the assault after
sending text messages to the
leader of their terror cell in
Pakistan, the head of Afghan
intelligence said.
The attacks struck the
heart of the heavily fortified '
capital on the eve of a visit
by Richard Holbrooke,
President Barack Obama's
special envoy to the region.
It underscored the reach
of the Taliban outside their
mountainous strongholds aqd
the challenges Obama faces
as he increases America's

Candelaria, who was driv-.
ing a 2004 Chevrolet, was
stopped on the shoulder
of the roadway and pulled'
into the path of a car
driven by a White Springs
resident.
FHP reports initially
indicated, the driver of
the Plymouth was Diana
L. Platt. On Wednesday,
however, FHP public infor-
.mation officer Lt. Patrick
Riordan: confirmed that the
driver was actually Patricia
J. Priest, .64, of White
Springs. According to a
FHP Driver Exchange of
Information report, Platt is
the car's owner.
According to the amend-
ed report, Priest was travel-
ing north on U.S. Highway
441 in the Plymouth with
Marvin Roberts, 54, also
of .White Springs, as her
passenger when "the
wreck occurred. She fol-,
lowed Candelaria until he
was arrested by Lake City
Police Department officers
later than morning.
Riordan said the trooper
at the scene inserted the
wrong name on the release
detailing the wreck, but
the trooper had the cor-
rect ,information on the
FHP Driver Exchange of
Information report
. According to Florida
State Statute 316.070,
exchange of information
at scene of crash, the law
enforcement officer, at the
scene of a crash which is
required to be reported,
shall' instruct the driver
of each vehicle involved
in the crash to report the
name and address of the
owner and the driver of.
the vehicle, the license
number of the vehicle and
the name 'of the liability
carrier for the vehicle.
The mistake was made
when the trooper was com-
pleting the report, Riordan
said. ..,

years, until he returned to
the LCPD in 1989, he .said.
Laxton is not in the run-
ning to be the permanent
police chief, City Manager
Scott Reynolds said.
-"axton is familiar with
the. LCPD staff and served
as its public information
officer before retiring, he
said. He-said feels confident
that things will work, "and
we'll have a good depart-
-mheht," while he serves as
interim chief.
. At a Feb. 5 City Council
workshop, council mem-
bers had told Reynolds
to continue searching for
a replacement for former
Police Chief Steven Burch.
Burch resigned as police
chief on July 31 after just
four months, having taken
office March'31; 2008.
The interim police chief
post, Reynolds said, is with-
in the city's budget.
Laxton starts at an annu-
al salary of $60,000. He
waived health insurance
and retirement options,
Reynolds said.
A ,selection committee.
decided to stop the process
of finding a new police chief
until a new city manager is
selected, Reynolds said. It
wanted to put in an inter-
im chief. Laxton is among
the members of that police
chief selection committee,
Reynolds said.
Reynolds' position as
city manager is now being
advertised. Reynolds
recently announced his res-
ignation, effective May 4,
to spend more time with
his family. The police chief
selection committee wants
to freeze the list of cur-
rent police chief applicants
until a new city manager
accepts his or her position,
Reynolds said in a memo to
City Council.
There are currently 16
police chief candidates who
have been culled from 88
applicants, Reynolds said
Wednesday.

scored 10 points in the
Leesburg game.
Columbia trailed
Vanguard by 10 points with
10 minutes to play and the
Lady Tigers beat Leesburg
on a late steal and good
defense in the closing sec-
onds. The Rams dominated
the boards against CHS..
"I told them you have to
jump for the ball and get it
off the glass," CHS head
coach Horace Jefferson
said. "It's anybody's ball
and rebounding is about
who wants it the most."
Bartram Trail (23-5) and
Wolfson High were both
7-1 in district play. The Ladyk
Bears beat the Wolfpack,
51-44, in the district final.
Bartram Trail, coached
by Ben Windle, has made
the playoffs five of the last
six years, missing only
in 2006. The Lady Bears
advanced, to the final four
in 2005 under coach Jenn
Miller.
Barbara Karlovich (12
points per game average)
scored 14 points in the dis-
trict final, while point guard
Mikalee Monachino scored
11 and Madeleine Roberts
(11.9 ppg.) added nine.
Kathryn Robinski averages
7.1 rebounds per game.
A depleted Columbia
team.' was beat up by
Bartram Trail in a sum-
mer meeting. Jefferson
said that could work to the
advantage of the real Lady
Tigers.
"They are a pretty good
team and have only lost one
game at home," Jefferson
said. "The crowd will be
very loud and into the
game. I am looking forward
to the challenge. If the girls
play smart and hard, we
will be in the game.
"I really believe we will
answer the bell."

up when Chris Martinez
was injured.
"Zach has a good arm
and did a good job last
year," Bennett said. "Julian
is a senior and works hard.
Both need to work on being
a better field general."
Blackwell started at third
base last year and Scott
is also getting time there.
Blackwell hit .233 last year
with 16 RBIs, six doubles,
one triple and two home
runs. Scott hit .254 with a
couple of doubles and five
RBIs.
Jameson Rossin, King
and Scott are' working at
first base. Rossin'or King
would add a left-handed bat
to the line-up.
Sweat, who hit .337 last
year with 28 hits, 23 RBIs,
three doubles and a home
run, has moved from left to
center field.
Guzman, .333 last year
with 11 RBIs, has right-
field experience.
Calvin Lee and Corey
Waller, both up from the
JV, are in the mix at left
field, along with Scott and
Espenship.
Guzman (RBI) and
Waller (run scored) had
hits in the Madison game
and Bonds had an RBI.
"Pretty much all of them
can play .any outfield posi-
tion," Bennett said. "Guys
will be moving around
quite a bit"
Despite a Columbia win-
ning percentage of .694
in regular-season league
play, District 4-5A has been
owned by Gainesville High
and Forest High. The two
teams finished 1-2 the past
three years.
The Tigers split with
both last year, but lost in the
second round of the district
tournament to Gainesville.
Leesburg knocked CHS
out in the semifinals the
previous two seasons.
Eastside, Vanguard and
Lake Weir high schools
also are in the district
'"We put a lot of empha-
sis on that No. 1 or No. 2
seed," Bennett said. "With
No. 1 you get a first-round
bye and with No. 2 you
get to play the No. 7 seed.
There is not anybody we
can overlook."
Bennett said the 2009
Tigers have the most team
speed since he has been
coach.
"A lot of them run well
and we will be aggressive
on the bases," Bennett said.
"We want to apply as much
pressure on the defense as
possible."
With the starting infield
returning and the meat of
the line-up back, Columbia
could climb into the.playoff
picture.
"We are a little bit
more seasoned and so far
I have been really, really
pleased," Bennett said. 'We
had a good summer and a
decent fall with our weight
training. -
