Arrest made early
Sunday morning
after brief chase.

arrested Sunday morning
after he allegedly struck
another car and fled the
scene, according to police
reports.
Erick Xavier Candelaria,
19, has been charged with
leaving the scene of a


crash with property dam-
age stemming from the
incident.
SThe wreck occurred
1 a.m. Sunday on U.S.
Highway 441 north of
Lake City..
According' to Florida
Highway. Patrol reports,.
Candelaria, who was 'driv-
ing a 2004 Chevrolet, was
stopped on the shoulder of
the roadway. ,
While he stopped on the
roadside, Diana L. Platt,
64, of White Springs was..
traveling north on U.S.


Highway 441 in a 1998
Plymouth with Marvin
Roberts, 54, also of White
Springs, as her passen-
get.
Candelaria allegedly
pulled into Platt's path as
she began to drive by his
car, striking the right side
of her car with the left side
of his vehicle.
Candelaria fled the
scene, traveling south
toward Lake City, but'Platt
followed him until a Lake'
City Police Department
officer "was able to stop


.his vehicle at the intersec-
tion of Marion Avenue and
Veterans Street.
. Candelaria was taken to
the Columbia County Jail.
Reports did not indicate
if he was injured in the
wreck, however, his car
,sustained an estimated
S3,000 worth of damage in
the crash.
Platt's car sustained an
estimated $2,000 worth on
damage in the wreck, but
reports say neither she
nor Roberts were injured
in the incident..

Feb. 20, 1864, is a historic
date for North Floridians.
marking the largest Civil
War battle in the state of
Florida, where thousands
of men risked their lives
for a cause in-which they
believed.
To commemorate that
day and remember the sacri-
fices of the men who fought
there, the 31st Annual
.Olustee Battle Festival and
33rd Battle Re-enactment
kicks off Thursday night in
Lake City with a weekend's.
worth of festivities to follow.
The event marks the 145th
anniversary of the Olustee
battle.
The Olustee festival and
re-enactmentannuallyvdraws
more than 40,000 visitors
from across the Southeast,
and re-enactors from all cor-
ners of the nation...
During' the week,
Abraham lincoln and Gen.
Robert E. Iee, portrayed by
Tad Allen and Jim Adams,
respectively, will go into
the schools and perform
living history programs
for.students. On Thursday,
the festival will official-
-- ly kickoff with. a special
American Music Festival
that will commemorate the
150th. anniversary of Lake
City. The event will begin
at 7 p.m. at the Columbia
County School District
Administration Auditorium
on U.S. Highway 90. Blue-

County, is scheduled to be
detoured from the busy
arterial roadway tonight
beginning at 9 p.m. The
detour will allow the
removal of a damaged.
beam on the Suwannee
Valley Road overpass.
. Southbound traffic will

136 Exit 439 west
for one mile, then directed
south on County Road 137
in Suwannee 'County for
two miles to the Interstate
10 interchange at Exit 292.
Traffic will then.be divert-
ed east onto .Interstate
10 for three miles before
being routed back .on
Interstate 75, The detour
is approximately six. miles
in length.
The closure is only
expected to be for a couple
of hours while crews with
Hal J.ones Contractor, Inc.,
of Jacksonville, remove
the damaged overpass
beam.
This work is to repair the
overpass from damage it
sustained during a vehicle
crash in January.

is trying to create a master
plan for the facility and the
facility ass-sement report
was one of the first steps to
help create master:, plan.
He said the workshop was
held to bring the board.up to
speed on what the problems
are at the hospital and what
the board's options are.
'"This board is at a place
in life where a critical deci-
sion is going to have to be
made," Berry said.
Board member Dr. Robin
Hall said the main driving
force behind the option
that is selected will be the
finances.
'"We need to find what's


in our checkbook, what our
generating power is and then
we can get down to some
solid choices," she said.
Although hospital author-
ity board members are try-
i"g.tq.dlevelop a master plan
to upgrade the hospital,
Lenhart assured them .the
current hospital is safe.
"There's a lot of equip-
ment that has reached the
point of no return," Lenhart
said. "There is nothing,
unsafe about this building.
We have a building that's
safe, but it's hard to main-
tain and keep standards
when you have a building
that's 35 years old. This is
a plan to get us up to where
we should be."


OLUSTEE: Festival begins Friday

County Historical Museum
will host a Civil War Living
History program on both
Friday and Saturday
aimed at children. The
museum's Pat McAlhany
said many of the activities
will take place outdoors
and feature a number of
Colonial and Civil War-era
games that children would
have played. On Saturday,
she said Jim and Joyce
Lillquist of Fort White will
perform music throughout
the day using handmade.

will bustle with activity on

battle festival is underway,
featuring more than 150
vendors selling Civil War
goods, handmade arts and
crafts and food. Harvey
Campbell, executive direc-
tor of the Columbia County
Tourist Development
Council, said the festival
will boast a number of new
food vendors this year -
including a seafood ven-
dor and also have an
ATM machine downtown.
Entertainment in Olustee
'Park, featuring a number
of area singers and bands,
will take place through-
out both days. The offi-
cial opening of the festival
takes place at noon at the
downtown Gazebo.
A small skirmish involv-
ing a few dozen Confederate
and Uniontroops takes place
at 5 p.m. as the Monitor and
the Merrimac duke it out
on Lake DeSoto.
Following a one-mile fun
run on Saturday morning,
the annual Olustee Parade
will take place at 10:30 a.m.
and feature both Union and
Confederate forces as well
as local schools and organi-
zations. The annual Blue/
Grey Square Dance is set to
take place Saturday night at
Rountree Moore Toyota at
7:45 p.m.
In neighboring Baker


County, the festivities
begin on Friday as re-
enactors and sutlers begin
setting up their camps at
Olustee Battlefield to pre-
pare for the Saturday and
Sunday festivities. Sutler's
Row offers those in atten-
dance a glimpse into the
way business was con-
ducted during 1864, and
authentic campsites near
the battlefield provides
a historic view into the
way of life of the soldiers
who fought at the Battle
of Olustee. A medical
demonstration at 1 p.m.
on Saturday will showcase
the primitive tools and
techniques used to help
injured soldiers, and a
Period Music Contest will
follow at 2:30 p.m.
There are two battle
re-enactments that will
take place at the Olustee
Battlefield. The first, a Mini
Battle, will take place at
3:30 p.m. on Saturday and
feature tactics used by sol-
diers during the Civil War
and feature cavalry, foot sol-
diers and artillery. The 33rd
Annual Olustee Battle Re-
enactment will take place
at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday and
feature several thousand
Civil War re-enactors take
the field to participate in
the re-enactment.
Admission to the bat-
tlefield .on Saturday and
Sunday is $7 for adults and
$3 for children. Children
under the age of 5 are
admitted free of charge.

Officials re-open
missing jogger case
GAINESVILLE Cold
case detectives are poring
over 3,000 leads in the case
of a University of Florida stu-
dent who disappeared while
.jogging in 1989.
The Alachua County
Sheriffs office updated
the case Monday, 20 years
after Tiffany Sessions disap-
peared. Since 2007, cold
case detectives have been
flying across .the country
following up leads and inter-
viewing possible witnesses.
Two leads involve suspicious
persons in the area the night
Sessions disappeared.
Lt Stephen Maynard
didn't want to give false
hope about the leads, saying.
authorities are still waiting
for a break in the case.

down after fire

down for several hours after
a fire broke out in a small
building near the prison's
hospital.

to be part of living
history is not one
to be missed is an
: Idea Lake City and
Columbia County will share
with tens of thousands of visi-
tors this week -.for the 31st
time. For more than three
decades, the Feb. 20, 1864,
Battle of Olustee has been
remembered in a festival that
draws on the honor of the men
who served in our nation's
bloodiest war.
And this is fitting. Nearly a
-century and a half ago, when
.the Battle of Olustee was
fought, almost 3,000 men from
both sides would be wounded
and hundreds would die on
fields of individual honor in the
largest Civil War battle to take
place in the state of Florida.
This is honor that deserves
remembrance.
Today we pay homage to
the sacrifices of these soldiers
with four days of historical
drama and one of the largest
re-enactments in our nation.
On Sunday, several thousand
nationwide and international re-
enactors will take to the battle-
field on foot, on horseback and
behind artillery and again the
Battle of Olustee will be waged.
And again the outcome will
find that Union casualties are
203 killed, 1,152 wounded
and 506 missing a total of
1,861 wounded or dead --and
SConfederate losses are .at 93
killed, 847 wounded and 6 miss-
ing --a total of 946 men.
This week, from the
American Music Festival .
Thursday night to the battle
;,Sunday, and the myriad events

Lake City, FL. passed away
Sunday, February 8, 2009 at
Lake City Medical Center. Mr.
Bryan was, bornm at Genoa, FL.
near White Springs 'to the late
Thomas Jefferson and Effie.
Rigsby Bryan. He was a resident
of Brooksville, -Florida before
moving back to the area six
years ago. Mr. Bryan was retired
from Florida Rock Industries.
He was -preceded in death by his
parents, a brother, Joe. Mallory
Bryan and three sisters, Oleta
Lindsey, Frances Hemrndp.n and
Lily Fish. Survivors include his'
son, John L. Bryan, Tampa, FL.;.
two daughters, Margaret Bryan,
Boston, FL. and Mary Lynn
Bryan of Arkansas; four sisters,
Mary Alice Sweat (Dorsey),
Evelyn B. Stormant (George)
and Alma B. Sweat (Tracy), all

Force and was retired from the
United States Postal Service. He
was, a member of the Amierican,
Legion Post #57 in Lake City
and was of the Catholic faith.
Mr. Terry is survived by his.
wife, Rose Terry; .his sons,
Michael Sweat (Susan) of Lake
City; Dan Rosenoff of North
Carolina; Margaret Boris (Mark)
of Lake City; and four brothers,
Ronnie Terry (Donna), Bobby
Terry (Dottie), Harold Terry
(Ann), Earl Terry' (Peggy) all
of Jacksonville, Florida. Five
grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Terry
will be conducted at 1:00 P.M.,

crowned the 2009 Miss
Olustee during the annual
Miss Olustee Pageant on
Saturday.
The 19-year-old Lake
City Community College
student was crowned
Miss Olustee during the
event that took place
Saturday afternoon and
evening at the Columbia
County School District
Administration Complex.
Register is the daughter'
of Ronnie and Shelley
Register. She will appear
during several Olustee
Battle Festival activities
throughout the week,
and be featured during
the Saturday morning
parade. .
The annual event crowns
a number of winners dur-
ing the event in. addition
to Miss Olustee. Sara Ellis
was named this year's
Junior Miss, *and Kelston
Sund was named Pre-Teen
Miss. The younger win-
ners were Katelyn Peyton,
Petite Miss; Kylie Thomas,

The basketball district
which prodticed a state
champion in 2006 and a final
four -team in 2008 begins
the process of determining
its plavo teams today.
Columbia High is
hosting the District 4-5A
tournament for the first
time since the district was
established four years ago.
It took some work by
coach Trey, Hosford, since
Columbia is the northern'
most school in the district
that goes all the way to
Leesburg.
"I got my point across
that ifs only fair,". Hosford
said. 'We have good facili-
ties and we will be able to
host a good tournament"
Columbia boosters con-
tributed to a major upgrade
of the boys and girls locker
rooms during'the offseason
and the visiting clubs will.

The school replaced its
multi-purpose floor with a
real wood basketball court
two years ago and has
painted and cleaned up the
gymnasium walls for this
season.
"It is exciting for the kids
-to host," Hosford said. "It is
a lot of extra work, but the
rewards are worth it; espe-,
cially when you can drive to
the game and not have to
get on a bus."

the Tigers on Jan. 6 was
the first in their district
history. Columbia beat the
Hurricanes, 65-43, in Lake
City on Jan. 23.
"We didn't play well down
there," Hosford said. "We
had 24 turnovers and were
five of 13 shooting free
throws. We had four play-
ers in double figures here*
and shot 44 percent on our
3s. We hit eight. After forc-
ing them to man-to-man, we


outscored them 42-25 in the
second half."
Tamarrio Riley (16
points), Joe Boothe (11
points) and Joe Walton (10
points) led Lake Weir at
home. Only Walton, with 12
points, hit .double figures in
Lake City.
"They will probably
show us zone, and if we
are not shooting well it will
be difficult," Hosford said.

wrestlers qualified for
region at the District 2-2A
tournament in Lake City on
Saturday.
Josh Hook, .in the 135-
pound weight class, and
Monterance Allen, at 189
pounds, placed third. Kody
Ross (103-pound weight
class) andMvlichael Roberts
(140 pounds) placed
fourth.
The four will wrestle in


the Region 1 tournament
at Crestview High, which
begins on Friday.
Ridgeview High wres-
tiers placed in the top three
in all 12 weight classes and
the Panthers won district
with 217 points.
Rounding out the field
were Lincoln High (175
points), Fleming Island
High (155.5), Chiles
(136.5), Middleburg High
(48), Columbia (35.5) and
Leon High (32).
Hook was 2-1 for the
tournament, while Allen
was 1-1, Roberts was 2-2
and Ross was 1-2.
