Local man faces drug charges


More than 130 grams
of crack cocaine
seized in man's home.,

A Lake City man was arrested
andfaces federal drug trafficking
charges after authorities alleg-
edly found crack cocaine in the
man's home when they execut-
ed a search warrant Thursday
afternoon, according to police

County officials agreed
Thursday night there is a
need to build a utility in
Ellisville to provide the area
with water and sewage ser-
vices. They also don't see
a way of finding $450,000
in the county's budget to
justify continuing the proj-
ect in the current economic
climate. '
The projected amount
needed annually from:the.
county to tund the project is
in the range of $400,000 to
$450.000. ,
During Thursday's
Columbia County
Commission meeting, coun-
ty commissioners spent.
nearly two hours discuss-
ing ways to pay for the proj-
ect, or possibly delaying it,
because of lack of funding.
Commissioners were
originally .scheduled to
select one of 11 scenarios
detailing the way the water
from the proposed system
would be distributed, how-
ever, the need to find a fund-
ing source threw them for a'
$450,000 loop.

budget and noted he doesn't

Authorities confiscated, more
than 130 grams of crack cocaine,
a 9mm handgun and a police scan-
ner as they executed the search
warrant.
Maxwell was transported


to a federal holding facility in
Jacksonville.
'The Multi-jurisdictional Task
Force continues to be aggressive
in their pursuit of illegal activity
in Columbia County," Columbia
County Sheriff Mark Hunter said
in, a prepared statement. 'This
house was in a residential, family
neighborhood. We are hoping that
with this arrest, the neighborhood
will be a safer place for ,those
families."

Brush fire
consumes

30 acres
Blaze in Suwannee
County was biggest
of 3 reported fires.

Local firefighters were
busy Thursday afternoon
fighting three brush fires
that reportedly consumed
more than 30 acres in the
area.
The largest brush fire
of the afternoon was in
Suwannee County and con-
sumed anywhere from 12
to 30 acres. The cause of
the .fire has not yet been
determined.
No estimated acreage
totals were available at
press time for brush fires
which occurred in southern
Columbia County near Elim
Church Road or in Lake City
near Voss and Washington
streets.
Firefighters from the
Florida Division of Forestry
and Columbia County Fire
Departments responded
to the afternoon blaze in
Suwannee County.
The Florida Division of
Forestry office :received a
,call about the fire at 12:43
p.m. and spent more' than
three hours at the scene
working on the blaze and

Considering that there
will be a new city manager
coming to work with a new
police chief, Reynolds asked
City Council if it wanted to
change the plan.
Mayor Stephen Witt said
he is against stopping now.
He wants to continue nar-
rowing the field and select
a chief.
The vice mayor con-
curred.
"I am satisfied with the
process," Vice Mayor
George Ward said. "If we
stopped, we would proba-
bly have a lot of candidates
drop out and say, 'They're
not serious' (referring to
City Council)."
By City Council consen-
sus, Reynolds was told to
continue the search for a,
new police chief.
Reynolds provided the
five city leaders with a laun-
dry list of other projects,
that are in the works.
The group then dis-
cussed the process to pick
a new city manager.
Reynolds said the Florida
City/County Manager's
Association works with the
Florida League of Cities
and has a free service to
help select a new city man-
ager. The group is known
as "Range Riders."
They put together a


package for advertising,
questions to ask and do
other things to help the
City Council through the
process.
"One of the first things
they would like you as a
City Council to do is write
down what you are look-
ing for in a city manager,"
Reynolds said. "And then
they will develop advertis-
ing around that"
Last time, City Council
members Eugene Jefferson
and Mike Lee took all of
the applicants and nar-
rowed the field to 10. From
that, the City Council as a
whole reduced it to three
candidates before making
the final choice.
Reynolds was told to
invite the. "Range Riders"
to the regular City Council
meeting that starts at 7
p.m. on Feb. 17. It is on
a. Tuesday, because that
Monday is a holiday -
Presidents Day.
He was also instructed to
begin advertising that the
city is looking for a new city
manager with the Florida
League of Cities and the
city manager association.
Minimum qualifications
that are tentatively list-
ed show the city is still
requiring a minimum of a
four-year college degree.
Reynolds had a two-year


degree.
In another matter
the group discussed at its
workshop, it tentatively
scheduled a joint County
Commission pnd City
Council meeting for 6 p.m.
on Feb. 25 in City Council
Chambers to discuss legis-
lative and budget issues.
County Commission
Chairman Stephen Bailey
told Reynolds the meeting
would be to discuss how
the two government bodies
might help each other in
light of the tough economic
scene.

an Eagle.

Soaring to the top of
any organization is
no easy task, and that
,only two percent of
the more than 100
million boys who have worn a
Boy Scouts of America uniform
can claim to be Eagle Scouts
testifies to the difficulty and
achievement of obtaining that
group's highest rank.
But soar they do, and in
. .Columbia County the proud
tradition of young men earning
this honor through service,
leadership and dedication is
almost nine decades old.
On Thursday, the county's
newest Eagles those who
have obtained the rank in
the past two years were
rightly honored in a special
recognition ceremony.
But they were not alone.
Joining them at the Lake City
Rotary Club function were
civic leaders, businessmen
and educators who themselves
are Eagle Scouts the rank
enjoys lifelong privileges and
many of whom who have been
instrumental in furthering a
new generation of scouting.
Today that generation joins.
the ranks of scouts from Troop
85, an organization that dates
back to 1923, and also from
groups that have disbanded
such as the Jaycees' Troop
522, the Elks' Troop 390,'First
Methodist Church's Troop
87, a troop organized by First
Baptist Church and Troop 187
from Lake City's Families for,
Scouting.
From each of these groups
has emerged young men
willing to make sacrifices, and
young men who have chosen to
rise above the masses to reach
the pinnacle of their goals.
That is, after all, what an
Eagle does.

created. Does anybody you

tractor plow that arrived on
the scene was never unload-
ed. One supervisor also
went the scene and directed
the other rangers as the
incident commander.
"I think most of it was
grasslands, but it did get
over into a wooded area,"
Davis said. "I'm unsure how
much of it got over into the
wooded area. No structures
were damaged and they are
showing an estimate of 30
acres damaged now."
Division of Forestry
crews remained on scene
working on a mop-up detail
to make -sure the fire did
not re-ignite.
"They've got it contained
and are in the process of
mopping it up," Davis said.
"They are securing it and
making sure we don't have
any smoke issues."

Washington street around
2:30 p.m.

a letter that Murphy had
written, detailing what
Murphy would do if
chosen teacher of the year.
"My first thought was
'that's my paragraph,'" she
said. "It's unbelievable.
All of these teachers
are well-deserving and
I'm just thankful for the
honor. I will do my best
to represent them and
Columbia County to the
best of my ability."
CHS Principal Terry
Huddleston said he was
thrilled when Murphy's
name was announced as
the 2010 teacher of the
year.
"She has done a fantastic
job with our Academy
of Entrepreneurship,"
Huddleston said. "She
has taken that vision
and has turned it into a
great program for our
students.. I know all the
faculty and staff join me in
congratulating Makeba."
Makeba was one of 13
teachers eligible for the
award this year. To be
eligible, a teacher had
to first win at the school
level. The other finalists

:hospital for the North Central Florida, South
Georgia and West Palm Beach areas.
Donations from 35 Florida counties
and eight South Georgia counties.Donors
help fund Shands' accepting any pediatric
patient, regardless' of his or her ability to
pay, Friend said.
The money pays for life-saving equipment,
research and patient education materials.
"Ifs the front line cashiers (at S&S Food
Stores) that really make our fundraising
successful," Friend said, "by encouraging
your customers to give. By doing this,
your fundraising effort has really inspired
everybody, and especially inspired every-,
body at Shands Children's Hospital."
Friend told stories about a few of the
children recently assisted. Among the
"miracle kids",is 9-year-old, girl who is
currently on a Berlin Heart The Berlin
Heart comes in various sizes for a range
of patients, including newborn babies. The
bulk of the device is outside the body.
The girl is awaiting a transplant. A 12-
year-old boy stayed on a Berlin Heartfor
five months while he waited for a trans-
plant, she said. Today, he is doing well.
An 11-year-old boy suffered from a brain
tumor last year and is healthy today as a
result of the Children's Miracle Network at
Shands Children's Hospital, Friend said.,
Beyond those examples, Friend listed
several other types of medical problems
where children were helped by research
or treatment.
The 84.2 million renovation of the Shands
neonatal intensive care unit is another point
of pride, for the hospital, she said. Friend
showed pic~pres of some of the ehildrfriend-


ly equipment and decorations at the hospital
geared to make children more comfortable
while being examined and treated.
The fundraising included stores meet-
ing or exceeding goals. Forty-two of the 47
stores raised $850 or.more.' Thirty stores
brought in more than $1,000.
Store number 38 was tops in fundraising.
It brought in $6,455 on its own, said S&S
Food Stores Vice President of Marketing
Keith Brown. The' top supervisor group
was led by Patrick Nolan, last year's S&S
Food Stores Employee of the Year. His
group raised $21,569.25.
Brown reminded everyone that they
want customers to "give willingly and hap-
pily" and to not feel pressured to donate.
The meeting also included the recogni-
tion of employees for their years of service
starting with the 3-year point and leading
up to 35.years. There was also a moment
of silence to honor retired and active
employees who died in 2008.

Employee of the Year

The 2008 S&S Food Store Employee of
the Year is Joyce Foley, a cashier at store
number 45 in Live Oak, at the corner of
U.S. Highway 90 and State Road 49.
Foley was Employee of the Month in April.
Other contenders for the title were Jo
Ayers, Shelby Thomas, MaftBonna, Pam
Edenfield, Michelle Bass, Lara "Denise"
Shephard, Deborah Malone, Steve Evans,
Beverly Bu.stryeki and Victoria Pring.
Lester and Anne Scaff, owners of S&S
Food Stores/Scaf f's Markets expressed
their appreciation for all of the employees
in their company. A buffet lunch concluded
the annual employee awards luncheon.

next week and it will be a
treat for fans who
appreciate coaches as
well as players.
Columbia's Trey .
Hosford entered the
100-win club this year, in
his sixth season as head
coach at his alma mater.
Hosford will be making
a run to the top of the
all-time CHS win list in a
couple of years.
Under Hosford, the
Tigers have made the
Playoffs in 2005-06 and
2008, all as district
runners-up
District 4-5A is packed
with veteran coaches,
some already high on
that "legendary" list.

state runners-up in 1989
and 2002.
Herman "Pop"
Williams, who took over
at Eastside High after
Randall Leath left, has'
had his team in the state
playoffs six times. The
Rams won it all in 2006,
representing the current
district, and were
runners-up in 2000.
Mike Surber is well
into his second decade at
Lake Weir High. Surber
led his Hurricanes to the
playoffs in 1999 and 2001.
Leesburg High's Colt
McDowell, and Steve
Powell from Forest High
also are building tenure.
The Jackets were district
runner-up in 2007.
'Columbia won a '
basketball state
championship in the
short-pants days of 1947
and the Tigers were
runners-up in 1962.
Leesburg also has
, a state title Class
3A in 1977 under Bill
Clendinen, andtthe
Jackets were runners-up
in 1929 and 1955.
Lake Weir won the
Class 2A state
championship in 1975
under Hugh Lindsley and
was runner-up in 1972.
Forest was a state
runner-up in 1972.
Six of these coaches
will be roaming
courtside at Columbia
when the tournament
begins on Tuesday. You
will have to wait until
Friday to see Beckham,
since the top-seeded
Purple Hurricanes enjoy

raced out to a 10-2 lead.
All but Thomas scored
points in the first quarter,
as Columbia took an 18-8
lead.
Thomas saved his surge
for the fourth quarter and
his eight points in the peri-
od ,helped the Tigers pull
away. ,
Columbia led 30-14 af
halftime and survived a
shaky third quarter, when
the Trojans pulled within
five points, 34-29.
Dexter Dye signaled an
end to the down time with a
3-pointer toopen the fourth
quarter. The Tigers went
on to score 22 points in the
quarter, including nine of
13 free throws.
"As disappointed as I
was Tuesday, I did a. 180
tonight," Hosford said.
"I was real proud they
answered the challenge.
