tion could be used at the board's
Feb. 17 budget workshop.
"We're looking at a number of
different options, including sal-
ary, reductions for administra-
tors, looking at retirement and


attrition for employees, and using
some construction dollars for
maintenance projects, which
would ;free up maintenance money
for the general fund," said school
superintendent Mike Millikin.

opening Pinemount Elementary
School which, located on the west
side of town on Birley Road, is near-
ing completion and would alleviate

Woman

to face

charges

Malnourished
horse put down
by local authorities.

FORT WHITE A Fort
White woman was arrested
and faces animal cruelty
charges after authorities
had to euthanize a malnour-
ished horse on the family's
property. Authorities have
issued another arrest war-
rant in the case, according
to police reports.
Christy Riederer, no age
given, 482 SW Gallberry
Court, Fort White, was
arrested Friday and charged
with felony animal cruel-
ty. She was arrested after
Columbia County Sheriff's
Office deputies arrested her
on a warrant stemming from
an animal cruelty investiga-
tion that began Jan. 7.
She was booked into the
Columbia County Jail and
is being held on a $5,000
bond.
An arrest warrant has
also been issued for John
Riederer.
According to Columbia
County Sheriff's. Office
reports, the sheriff's office
received complaints about
malnourished horses on the
Riederers' property.

Coppock will have 30 years vested with
the city for retirement purposes after
Feb. 28. Part of the proposed deal includes
giving the worker an increase in salary,
retroactive to April. This will increase his
pension from the city, in contrast with what
it would have been without the raise.
When Columbia County took over
management of the Annie Mattox
Recreation Center and the Richardson
Community. Center, it sought Coppock
because of his talent, experience and the
respect he has earned as a leader in the
recreation community.
City Manager Scott Reynolds said-
Commissioner Williams' vision for recre-
ation included having Coppock as project
manager.
"I am very impressed with what hap-
pened at Annie Mattox Park and with
what's happening at Richardson," Reynolds


said. "It's just amazing. It's night and
day (in regard to improvements since the
county took over those facilities)."
By working together for the betterment
of the community; Reynolds said, the city
and county have shown what can be done.
In regard to the county and city work-
ing together, City Councilwoman Melinda
Moses asked when there will be another
joint meeting.
Commissioner Williams said a meeting
will be scheduled to discuss a request from
the city in regard to the county helping pay
for the Girls Club. Other county-city rec-
reation issues will be discussed as well.
,The current plan is to have the meeting
before March, because both governments
are working on revising budgets related
to recreation, according to information
released at the Thursday night meeting.

government bodies should endorse the
CMC.
The center's leaders also shared a prog-
ress report on obtaining land.
ColumbiaAnderson Co. recently donated
2.7 acres of land on Northeast Jacksonville
Loop, just north of First Assembly of God.
The property is in the unincorporated part
of the county, Raburn said.
Before the development of a facility
goes any further, however, CMC leaders
must discover whether city sewer can be
connected by a few hundred feet of pipe,
Raburn said. -
The CMC is already working. On
Thursday night, there were 32 people.
sleeping in beds at First Assembly of
God and at Victory Christian Teaching
Ministry.
These homeless. people include men,
women, children and military veterans.
One of the women is a pregnant veteran,
Raburn and Merricks said.
Twenty-nine of these 32 people are
Columbia County residents, Raburn said,
because they must have lived in the county
for at least 90 'days to qualify for medi-
cal help. These are- the "select few" of
the homeless population in this county,
Raburn said.
A background check has been con-
ducted on every person. They are not
allowed to use alcohol or drugs. They
must participate in a 30- to 90-day pro-
gram, which includes obtaining employ-
ment and becoming a productive member
of society.
The CMC has bought eight apartments
on Southwest Arlington Boulevard and
Winter Way, down the street from Lake
City Middle School.


To ease concerns of neighbors there,
Raburn and Taylor noted that these apart-
ments will house only the people who have
become employed. They will be low-rent
apartments, where two people will share
the $400 monthly rent.
Those formerly homeless people will
remain in a program with the CMC for
another three to six months, Raburn
explained, and will continue to be moni-
tored in their progress.
The Community Mercy Center will "be
like a lighthouse in Columbia County for
the rest of Florida" to emulate as the best
method to help people who are homeless,
Raburn said.
Not all homeless people qualify for the
program. People who reject God are not
welcome. This is a faith-based program that
does not accept federal dollars, because of
the requirement to not practice religion-to
receive federal funds, Raburn said.
The CMC's monthly budget of $8,000
to $10,000 has been met the past few
months, Raburn said, because people have
donated.
"God is working a wonderful work," he
said. .
For instance, the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter Day Saints (LDS) donated a semi-
tractor trailer full of-goods, he said. Other
churches, businesses and individuals'have
graced the effort with their donations, he
said.
Raburn said the LDS has indicated that
it may help the CMC with construction
of the facility to help the homeless, if the
property can be developed.
DuPree indicated that he was pleased-to
hear about the program, and the answers
he was given allayed his concerns.

Super Bowl

out-during Super Bowl XLIII.
But that doesn't mean you
can't be otherwise directly
involved with the Big Game.
Youth groups from local
schools and churches have
participated in a national
fundraiser, the Souper Bowl of
Caring, since 1990. At many
churches throughout Lake City
and: Columbia County, youths
will be standing with soup pots
or other means of collection
before or after Sunday services.
This is a worthy charity drive
that deserves our support.
Di0ring the event's first year,
a handful of churches in
Columbia, S.C., collected
abioit $6,000 for nonprofit
organizations. Since that time,
thb*national total has eclipsed
$5. million money that stays
in the local community in which
it is raised.
The energy and anticipation
surrounding Super Bowl
Sunday is undeniable. But also
undeniable is the need in our
local food banks and other
nonprofit agencies.

Caring for our loved ones is the

highest level of communication


My next door
neighbor is
a widow. Her
out-of-state
daughter has
moved in to stay with her. She
said, 'This is the way we used
to do, just move in and take care
of our loved ones."
Ann is my wife of nearly 60
years. I am now her caregiver.
She is unable to walk without
a walker and cannot stand but
for just a' few minutes. After all ,
she was my caregiver for more
than 50 years. To say, "My
wife doesn't work, she's just
homemaker is a real laugh."
Just take off your shoes and
do what's required to keep the
house going for a week. Try a
month or a year. It would bless
us all to know that caring is the
highest level of communication.
I Eighty percent of Americans
live on less than 1 percent of
American soil. We live beside
each other, around each other,
beneath each other and above
each other but hardly know
each other. Can you name five
neighbors. on your block, or two
or even one? The politicians
all say the same, "We're going
to bring everyone together."
Big deal, but it's never going
to happen on the push of a
politician. "Unity is what we
need" is the sermon of the day.
We all see the need but doing
something, about it is altogether
different.
Do you remember the case
of Catherine (Kitty) Genivese,
who died from an assailant's
knife on a neighbor's doorstep?
Since then, 28 neighbors who
looked on but did nothing have
had difficulty in answering the
question, "Why?" "Why did it
happen," "Why didn't I help?"
"Why didn't I care enough to
do something?" "Why didn't I
call 911?"
Years later we watch the
eroding emotion: "That
helpless feeling." Those who
have the courage and ability
to care seem to be decreasing.
The very mark of a believer
is summed up in the words of
Jesus when he said, "By this
shall all men know that you

I have noticed for the past
six to eight months there are
typing errors in ... the Lake City
Reporter What caused me to
type this letter .is when I read
in the Lake City Reporter that a
Columbia High School teacher
was letting her students read
the Rep'orter for one of her
classes. Did the teacher or the
students catch any mistakes?
The obituaries have also had
some mistakes. This is embar-
rassing because some families
cut out the column and keep it
forever.
As they say, "This is positive
criticism" and no way am I say-
ing anything negative about
the Lake City Reporter that I

Doctrines may be perverted
and misunderstood, but those
who care seldom are. Folks
really don't care how much
we know until they learn how.,
much we care; Here are.some,
ideas that might help resolve
this spiritual energy shortage in
loving care one for the other.
Smile more, even to people
you do not know. Touch people
with your eyes reach out
to them. Let them know that
you are aware that they exist.
Be concerned about those you
work with. Listen when they
speak to you. If someone has
a problem, spend that extra
time with them. Never just
endure or ignore people. Care
about others.
Caring is the highest level
of communication. The time
of day, the weather, who will
win the Super Bowl, the rose
garden, the kids' school and
a thousand other subjects are
just good "topic talks." Even
more frivolous is the superficial
talk about others. Little minds
entertain people; average minds
discuss current events; great
minds discuss principles of life;
they get into the feeling area of
the heart.
Paul writes, 'Weep with those
who weep and rejoice with
those who rejoice" (Romans
12:15). Begin risking yourself
more. Plunge deep into your
feelings refuse trivia and
follow the words of Jesus when
he said, "Judge'not according
to the appearance but judge
righteous judgment" (John
7:24). Need some practice? Start
with your own family.

Obama's advice on
stimulus incorrect
To the Editor:
We have a new president. I
hate to be the first one to rain
on his parade, but his stimulus
package, crafted by either the
Democrats or Republicans,
is not going to work. Why?
Because the advice he's getting
from his economic team is
based on models that are years,
if not decades' old. They can't
account for an economy that is
changing from an "I want" to an
"I need," one.
They've tried the old methods


soul. It prevents the sweet
natural emotions of the heart
that springs from the purer
mind. Envy is a double curse.
It rejoices when evil comes and
is made sorrowful when good
fortune blesses others. It is
selfish, self-defeating and totally
destructive. It is evil gone to
seed.
Like the fly that landed on the
sweet gooey flypaper. The first
thought as he looks about for

paper in returns says, "My fly!"
The well-known speaker
started off the seminar by
holding up a $20 bill. "Who
would like this $20 bill?" he
asked. All hands went up.
He crumpled up the bill, he
dropped it on the floor and
started grinding the heel of his
shoe into it. Then he wadded it
up into a little ball and repeated
his question. "Who would still
like this $20 bill?" The same
hands reached for the ceiling.
"Why do you continue to
want it?" he asked. "It's been
crumpled, dirtied, stomped on,
and dishonored!" They said,
"but it hasn't loss it's value it
is still worth $20!"
Then the speaker drove home
his point. "No matter what has
happened or what will happen,
you will never lose your value.
Dirty or clean, crumpled or
finely creased, you are still
priceless to those who love you.
The worth of our lives come
not in what we do or who we
know, but in WHO WE ARE
AND WHOSE WE ARE. You are
special don't ever forget it
Count your blessings, not your
problems.

for that awkward movement,
that haunted look of the eyes, or
the very obvious-needs of food,

no joy here either!
People are bombarded with
layoffs and companies going out
of business. Is my job secure?
The, "I need," economy is now
cutting back and will only be
getting the necessities. Tax cuts
and thrown money won't help.

SCHOOL: Cutbacks could leave structure empty Ii

voiced his concern

Hunter said the new school would
require tentatively $500,000 to
$600,000 of money frqm the gen-
eral fund, money which he isn't sure
the district will have next year. The
school was built using money from
the district's construction funds,
which can only be used on construc-
tion projects throughout the district.
Those funds cannot be used to open
the school or pay salaries and most
must be used in an allotted time.
"The state has not been very accu-
rate with budget cuts and it has always
been on the worst side of it," Hunter
said. "Opening that elementary school

horse's ribs, backbone and

Jan. 10.

of declines in districts' general funds.
"We can only base it on what we've
seen in the past two-and-a-half years,
work smart and expect the worst," he
said. "We don't want to be at the end
of our rope and then (the state) tell
us we have some more cuts coming
our way."
While the structure is nearing com-
pletion, Hunter said the 28-classroom
building could remain vacant until
the 2010-2011 school year.
"We would police it and maintain it...
but (the maintenance cost) would not
be anywhere near the cost of opening
it," Hunter said. "These are things we

every facility that is standing.

Story of

Exodus is

news of

the world

," 'during the New
Kingdom era of
Ancient Egypt
was great.
Enormous structures were
being built by the Israelite
slaves. Kings were buried in
gold or silver coffins; money
was no object. However,
change was coming.
There arose a Pharaoh
who was unaware of the
wealth accumulated for
Egypt by Joseph, the
Israelite. Being fearful
of this group of captives,
this Pharaoh placed great
afflictions upon the sons of
Israel.
Giving heed to the cry of
the sons of Israel and after
seeing their afflictions, the
God of Abraham, Isaac and
Jacob commissioned Moses
to lead the Israelites out of
the land of Egypt. Moses
would bring them up to "a
land flowing with milk and
honey" (Exodus 3:8).
The rest of the world
heard about this "bringing
out of Egypt" by God. The
:Israelites were never able
,to forget this great act of.
;godly redemption.
Some 40 years later,
'Rahab the harlot, a citizen
,of Jericho, said to the
,Israelite spies; "For we
'have heard how the Lord
dried up the water of the
Red Sea before you when
you came out of Egypt"
'(Joshua 2:10). This story
helped Rahab to believe in
the God of the Israelites.
In an effort to motivate
the sons of Israel to be:
faithful to God, Joshua
'reminds them of this
gracious act of God in
bringing the people out of
Egypt (Joshua 24:6).
The prophet Samuel
(some 350 years after
the- event) mentions this
dcoring out of Egypt
-(1-Samuel,12:8). King
David mentioned this
coming out of Egypt (1.
Chronicles 17:21). Nearly
a millennium after the
event the prophets Hosea
and Haggai wrote about it.
The New Testament writer
Matthew (2:15) applied
Hosea's writings to the
-birth of Christ. The writer
of Hebrews (3:16) uses the
event as a warning against
forsaking God.
-f this, event happened
today, it would be world
news. Every news media
-(radio, TV, internet,
printed page) would be
covering the event. Video
images would mesmerize
everyone. Volumes of
written material would
be read with intensity.
Radio talk show hosts
would struggleto t ake a
"commercial break."
In the 15 chapters of
Exodus that it takes to
describe this event, we
see the awesome power
of God. Any time that
God wanted to impress
people with His power;
He mentions this Exodus
story. I hope that you
consider this Exodus story
not only awesome and the
showing of God's power,
but world news.

head man one more
season.
Though it shouldn't
matter with head-coach-
in-waiting Jimbo Fisher
being very involved
in recruiting. The
Seminoles need to keep
adding playmakers to the
offensive side of the ball.,
Willie Downs tops
the list of players who
should see action on the
offensive side of things.
Though it's not'certain
that Downs will play
on the offensive side
of the ball, he's got the
skill set to become the
next great Florida State
receiver. The problem is
he could step in to take
Myron Rolle's spot in the
secondary as a freshman.
Downs shined in the
All-American Bowl, and
that could be enough
to sway coaches from
using him on offense,
but if he plays, he'll be
very effective. Rivals.com
rates him as the third
best athlete in the 2009
class.
One player who will
definitely see the field
as a freshman on the
offensive side of the ball
is Rodney Smith from
Miami's Archbishop
Carroll.
Smith has the height
to come in and replace
Greg Carr from the start
with a huge 6-6 frame.
His 40 time is a bit slow,
but he should make up
for it with his height and
ball-hawking ability.
Clemson is making a
hard push towards Smith,
but expect him to remain
firm in his commitment
to FSU.
If the Seminoles
are looking to add a
speed receiver to their
offense next year,
Willie Haulstead out
of Titusville could
be that answer. His
route running needs
improvement, but he
makes up for his less-
than-clean routes with
blazing speed.
Florida State might use
him all over the field, and
with his sizehe has the
ability to take a bruising
at running back.
The Seminoles will hit
a big splash with Lonnie
Pryor. He's easily able
to come in and play as a
freshman, but his biggest
problem getting on the
field is the Seminoles'
young running core.
Jermaine Thomas will
become one of the ACC's
Best backs next season
behind an offensive line
that will be the core of
the offense. Just how
many carries Pryor
gets will depend on the
health and endurance of
SThomas.

Softball is in
Alexi Hodson's
blood. It should
be. She's been
playing
softball for the Fort
White High Lady Indians
since seventh grade.
Next year she will play
for a new team as she
signed with the
Lake-Sumter Community
College Lady Lakers to
be apart of their 2009
softball team.
Hodson has been
playing travel softball
since the age of eight, and
it's paid off for the Lady
Indians' star catcher. She
was named the team's
offensive MVP last season,
and that propelled her to
signing with Lake-Sumter.
It was a recruiting
process that led Hodson
around the state in search
of a school, but she found
a feeling of home in
Leesburg's Lake-Sumter.
"I've been to a lot of
places before I went to
.Lake-Sumter for the second
time," Hodson said. "I liked
the campus and the small
town feel like Fort White. I
was looking for that
small-town feeling, and it
felt very homely."
Hodson batted .414 last
season and only had one
error, but missed eight
games due to a dislocated
shoulder.

"It was hard to sit out,"
she said. "It's a big deal
to play, to me. I begged
coach Frank Howell to let
me play. I was told to be
quiet about it, and had lots
of therapy to be ready to
start this season."
This season, Hodson
will be one of the leaders
for the Lady Indians as
they try to win the District
5-3A championship.
Fort White has begun
practicing two hours a day
until the'season begins
with a district game
against Dixie County High
on Feb. 10.
Howell expects big
things from Hodson
during her senior season.
"This will be her fourth
season behind the plate for
me," Howell said. "She's
been the starter for four


years, and she's a very
hard worker. I couldn't be
prouder of her. She's been
a real delight for the past
three years, and I expect
her to have another great
season."
The Lady Indians will
look to improve on a 17-9
record from last season
where they lost to Keystone
Heights in extra innings in
the 3A state playoffs.
Though Hodson has
become a star on the
softball diamond, she still
remembers the people
who got her where she is.
"My parents and coaches
have been a great support
system," Hodson said.
"My coach Jimmy
Williams keeps me
straight. Gary Williams
pushes me and Randall
Edenfield gives me a hard


push during the season.
My parents, Carl Jr. and
"Lauri Hodson, have been
big supporters. My mom
has taken me to all my
games. She pushes me
hard to do good in school
and softball."
Lake-Sumter coach Kelly
Golden sees Hodson as a
player who could make an
immediate impact as well.
"She's great," Golden
said. "We need a catcher
after losing one, and we
look for kids with both
good academics and
athletic ability. We also
look for kids that come
from great families, and
she fits that mold."
For now, Hodson will fit
the mold of a Lady Indian.
Following the season,
she'll mold into a Lady
Laker.
