A 22-year-old Leesburg woman
was arrested Friday and charged
with murder in the Jan. 16 shoot-
ing death of Katie Nicole Roberts.

Leesburg Friday afternoon after
the Lake City Police Department
obtained an arrest warrant.
Authorities have not released any
details regarding Johnson's bond
or where she is being held. -I
"After conducting numerous
interviews and reviewing the evi-
dence collected, the Lake City
Police Department obtained an
arrest warrant for Johnson," said
Lake City Police Department Det.'

Roberts, 27; was found dead in a
trash can at a home located at 885
SW Jaguar Drive in the Cypress
Landing subdivision. Roberts was


found by the homeowner, who
called authorities. The homeown-
er was cleared of any wrongdoing
in the case.
The corpse was sent to the
medical examiner's office in
Jacksonville where it was deter-
mined Roberts died from a gun
shot wound. Authorities later
recovered a bullet from, the fatal
shooting.

Fugitive caught after high-speed chase

Sheriff's Office
deputies arrested a
man after he crashed
his car. through an
Annie Mattox Park fence during
a Friday morning high-speed
chase. The man was wanted for
his alleged role in a shooting,
according to police reports.
Gregory Alonzo McCaskill,
no age or address provided,
was arrested and charged in
connection with the incident.

"We booked him at noon into
the Columbia County Jail," said
Columbia County Sheriff Mark
Hunter.
According to a Columbia
County Sheriff's Office press
release, Deputy Josh Latimer was
assisting Deputy Winston Warner
as the two searched for a shooting
suspect. Latimer saw a man who
fit the description of the wanted
man who was driving the vehicle.
Latimer attempted to stop
the car so he could investigate
the car and driver. The driver,
however, who was later identified
as Gregory Alonzo McCaskill,

McCaskill led Latimer on
a chase through Lake City's
northside, which crossed the
railroad tracks at Washington
Street and Annie Mattox Park at
a high rate of speed.
There, McCaskill lost control
of his vehicle and crashed into
a fence at Annie Mattox Park,
according to reports.
After crashing into the fence,
McCaskill exited the car and
fled on foot, but a short time

still artwork to create an
entertaining program that
is projected onto a screen,
Henry Sheldon has formed a
means of sharing the history
of Lake City.
The 150th Anniversary
Committee for Lake City
is hosting the first of four
History Presentations for the
community at 6 p.m. on Jan.
26 in the Columbia County
School Board Administration
Building, 372 W. Duval St.
The program is Sheldon's
masterpiece. The program is
fast-paced and captivating.
There will be a discussion
period after the presentation
as well as exhibits for view-

State's jobless
number worsens
TALLAHASSEE -
Florida's unemployment
figures continue to worsen.
The state said Friday that
8.1 percent of eligible work-
ers in Florida were without
jobs in December, the highest
number of unemployed since
September 1992.
There were 752,000
people out of work in Florida,
where roughly one of every
14 eligible workers is without
a job. ,
Florida's unemployment
total is nearly a full percent-
age point above national
average of 7.2 percent.
Flagler County in northeast
Florida reported the highest
number of folks out of
work with an 11.7 percent
unemployment rate.

Deadline looms
for prepaid tuition


TALLAHASSEE Time
is running out for parents,
grandparents or perhaps
a rich uncle to buy one of
Florida's prepaid college .
tuition plans at today's prices.
The deadline for
purchasing one of the plans
is Jan. 31. There are choices
that include purchasing four
years at one of the state's *
universities, two years at a
Florida community college, or
a combination.
Officials with Florida's
Prepaid College Plan call it
a "secure and safe
investment" in today's
troubled economy and are
encouraging families to take
advantage of the program.
Buying a four-year plan.
for $14,359 for newborns
could save a family roughly
$25,000 in tuition by time
the child enrolls in college in
2027. Tuition for four years
at one of Florida's public uni-
versities is expected to cost
nearly $40,000 in 18 years.

Lab have been working
on the Roberts homicide
investigation for a week.
Late Friday afternoon they
released a list of names
that were' compiled from
documents found during
their investigation.
'The names were found
on documents related to the
crime scene," Blanchard
wrote. "We are wanting
to make sure all of these
people are well. All of these
names may not be limited to
the Lake City area."

Your business is bound to fail


When I retired I
had better than
.1.3 million miles
on that carrier
alone. My "three usual days"
carried me into all 50 states and
numerous foreign countries.
Some of my books have been
translated into Russian and
Indian languages.
On a flight out of Atlanta
to Los Angeles, I had been
bumped up to first class
through the frequent flyer point
system. My seat was 7A, and
as the huge aircraft reached
cruising altitude, I was relaxing
over the newspaper when the
well-dressed business man was
sitting beside me. "I'm in the
tool business" he said. Without
glancing toward him I replied in
a smooth voice, "Bound to fail!"
A few seconds passed and he
said in a rather irritating tone,
"Well, I'm the CEO."
You could tell in this part
of our brief conversation what
he was thinking. "Am I really
going to be stuck riding beside
this guy all the way to LA.?" I
said, "You'd better get a new
CEO because the course of your
business in bound to fail."
He sat for a moment without
talking and then said, "If we are
going to be sitting together on
this trip, you need to explain
why you think my business is
going to fail."
I said, "Anybody that's not in
the people business is going to
fail."
He laughed and slapped
me on the knee (without
permission) and said, "Boy, you
got me there. I have preached
that for years and had to sit next
to you to get back to it."
You're a business man. Are
you in the people business?
When the little man from
Texas was running for the
nomination to be president, I
read in the paper where he had
lost $456 million in one day on
the market. I sent him a copy
of my long play album entitled,
"Winning Over Worry."' He

.wrote me a note in return, and
said, "The loss you speak of was
just 'paper,' but should I lose it
all, have no fear. I would simply
find something in life that
everyone needs, make it, sell
it and make more millions." So
have a banner painted and put
it up where all can see, "WE'RE
IN THE PEOPLE BUSINESS."
Now watch the business grow.
In Chattanooga, Tenn., I
purchased four new tires that
cost more than $500. While this
was back 35 years ago, it was still,
a lot of money to me. The tires
-were excellent They had been
properly balanced and secured. I
paid the bill and, looking out the
. window, I was just a bit shocked.
I said, "Aren't you going to wash
the blue stuff off the tires?" He
replied, "We just sell tires, we
don't wash 'em."
That brought to mind another
banner that would help make
any business a success. "We
do what's right and then a little
more." That's not a bad saying
for everyone. The last car we
purchased was a Buick from the
local Buick dealer. Everyone
was gone and he was closing
up. I mentioned that my right
hubcap would not stay on.
His response was immediate.
"Just have a seat," he said and
disappeared. Knowing he was
the owner, I was rather shocked
when he came back after about
15 minutes with another hubcap,
the same kind I was having
trouble with. He knelt and it was
a perfect fit. '"That's better, now
and come see us again."
This began a long and
enduring friendship, for the
owner and CEO of the company


had time (after hours) to filter
through a bunch of automobiles
until he found the right fit for me.
He's on the wrong side of the city
for cars, but that don't matter,
"He's in the people business."
Grandpa was taking an
afternoon nap. The two little .
granddaughters wanted him to
come and play. ,One said to the
other, "I called him but he didn't
answer. You don't reckon he
died, do you, 'cause he's been
laying still a long time?"
They tiptoed into the den
where grandpa was. Little by
little he moved forward for their
test. The older one took the lead
and reached over and lifted one
eyelid. "Nope," she said, "He's
still here."
When the same two kids
were in church, the preacher
was speaking of the creation. As
he spoke, a leaf inhis old worn
bible fell to the floor. A hush ran
over the crowd and the younger
of the two, said it just loud
enough for everyone to hear, "I
think what fell is part of Adam's
underwear." Laugh in church?
The whole congregation did.
In our lifetime, we adopted
three daughters. One was
destined to drift away in a life
of crime and shame. We had
lost touch with her for many
years, and finally, there was a
long distance call from Dallas.,
It was a hospice worker,desire
before dying. She wanted to
come home. We met her plane
on that Sunday afternoon at
6:29. She was but a shell of her
former self. On Tuesday of that
week she died. During the time
she was home we all repeated
again and again the same thing.
"We love you, we love you, we
love you" and "I forgive you, I
forgive you, I forgive you."
It was a family success for
us only because "you're in the
people business."

Obama

gets it all

backward
Y you're listening to
Barack Obama's
inaugural,
and yes, it is a
splendid moment
in American history, the
adulation is very nearly
palpable and it is impossible
not to be affected. One thought
nevertheless keeps nagging
at you. On some of the most
pressing issues of the day, this
speech has things absolutely
backwards.
The new president tells
us quite correctly that
the market is a freedom-
spreading, enriching force,
quickly adding, however,
that it can spin out of control
if not closely watched. He
has just a moment earlier
pronounced arguments against
big government as stale and
inapplicable to the concerns of
the moment, explaining that
the real issue is what does or
does not work.
But, of course, the fear being
expressed by some of those
keeping their heads in this dire
hour is that ifs the government
in danger of spinning out of
control. Historian Paul Kennedy
of Yale University worries in a
Wall Street Journal piece about
how enormous indebtedness
,could further prompt our end
days as a great power, just as it
has done with other powers in
the past.
He wonders who will buy
the Treasury bonds to finance
the debt China? And if it
does, doesn't that bring about
a great swing in who is who in
the financial world?

Hassett doesn't see us
getting off this horse once we
start riding it, and predicts that
in the absence of a watchful
commission, we could be facing
either the collapse of the dollar
or a devastating tax hike.
Another way big
government could spin out of
control is trying too hard to
keep the market in tow. If the
federal government decides it
can somehow forever forestall
any future boom-and-bust
panics by minute, ironclad,
universally stringent regulation
far exceeding the hundreds
of thousands of pages of rules
already in existence, a number
of positive American attributes
praised by Obama in his
speech will in effect be bound
up in chains. Then forget
opportunity for all.
That idea, a great idea, was
also in his speech as he told us
that it is not just growing gross
domestic product that matters,
but whether any American
willing to work ought to have
a chance to partake in the
national prosperity. If you use
the correct analytical tools, you
find they pretty much do.
Obama preaches
pragmatism, and I like that
as long as it is a pragmatism
that looks to long-term
consequences and appreciates
the historically validated
value of certain basic
principles. If it doesn't, the
adulation of a special January
day may not last.

recruiting by looking at
some players who have
already committed to the
University of Florida.
We continue that look
with what players are still
out there.
The weekend will
be huge for Florida as
recruits make it into
Gainesville including four
players who are already
committed.
Quarterback Jordan
Reed, wide receiver
Nu'Keese Richardson,
athlete Andre Dubose
and defensive tackle
Gary Brown have already
given their commitment.
to Florida.
They will be joined in
Gainesville by Marlon
Brown, a receiver with
size and speed. He will be
joined by Joshua Evans,
a talented athlete who
threw and rushed for
more than 1,000 yards
during his senior season.
Look for Florida to
land one of these players
this weekend, with Evans
being the logical choice.
Brown may answer
the call to Gainesville
as well, but with a trip
scheduled to Tennessee
next weekend, it's more
likely hell wait to make a
decision.
Brown is probably
the most outstanding
of the recruits left
on the Gators' board
and although he has
committed, nothing is
sure with recruiting until
a high school athlete
signs a letter of intent.
Brown is a beast at
defensive tackle, but
probably needs to put on
a little size or switch to
defensive end to make
an immediate impact.
He has the speed to
play off the corner, but
at 275 pounds would be
eaten alive as a freshman
against SEC linemen.
Dubose is being
recruited as a wide
receiver, and it's easy to
see howhe could make
plays with 4.43 speed in
the 40.*
He could use some
weight added to his
frame, but Percy Harvin
also came in as a
lightweight. The thing
that gives Dubose an
advantage at seeing the
field early is his speed,
and that's one thing
the Gators will look to
replace in the receiving
department with the
loss of Harvin. He's got
that quick first step like
Harvin, which makes '
him equally as dangerous
once he catches the ball.
Dubose scored a
94-yard touchdown
reception in the Under
Armor All-American
game, and if that can
translate into Saturdays
fans will feel an ease in
pain from losing Harvin.

soccer team traveled to
Fort White High on Friday
to take on the Indians in a
battle of in-county foes with
the Tigers coming out on
top 5-1.
The Indians got on
the board first, as Josh
Barton scored at 20:30
to give the Indians the

Columbia High basket-
ball continued its district
payback spree with a 65-43
home win over Lake Weir
High on Friday.
Columbia improved to
9-12 overall and closed in
on the No. 3 District 4-5A
tournament seed with a 5-6
league record. Lake Weir
fell to 9-11 (3-8).
The Tigers added Lake
Weir to Vanguard High and
Forest High on the list of
teams they beat the second
time around. They came
close against Eastside High,
falling in overtime.


"The thing that makes
me proud is everybody
we lost to we either beat
them or played them dif-
ferently," CHS head coach
Trey Hosford said. "This
team has improved and that
is encouraging. When you
lose to somebody and .get
a chance to play them later,
you get to see which way
each team has gone."
The Tigers throttled the
Hurricanes early, leading
12-4 at the end of the first
quarter. Lake Weir cut into
the lead by three points at
halftime and trailed 23-18.
Columbia opened the
third quarter on a 12-1 roll
and that was it. The lead
stayed at 16 points at the
end of the quarter.
The Tigers scored inside
with 11 points from Jerry
Thomas and eight from


Julio Viens. They also
rained in treys with three
each from Dont'ae Davis
and Jordan Kirby and two
from Dexter Dye.
All finished in double fig-
ures 15 for Davis, 13 for
Kirby and 10 for Dye. Ricky
Jernigan and Dakota Smith
each scored three points
and Dewayne Edwards was
2-for-2 shooting free throws.
"Our goal has been to
hold the opponents under
50 points and find a way
to score 50," Hosford said.
"On offense at times we
didn't make good decisions;
we still had 19 turnovers.
We made some shots, but it
all starts on defense."
Columbia hosts
Gainesville High at 7:30 p.m.
on Tuesday. That group of
Hurricanes is ranked No. 4
in the state.

utive season in 2008, the
Fort White High Indians
will try to make that three
years.in a row during the
2009 season.
With the release of the
final district alignments on
Friday,' the Ifidians may
now be one of the favorites
to win District 2-2B.
Last season, Fort
White was in a district
with Madison County,
Dixie County, and Taylor
County with the Cowboys
of Madison taking home
the district title.
