Body found in trash can


Victim was found

An unidentified body
was found Friday after-
noon stuffed in a trash can
in the Cypress Landing
Subdivision.
The body, along with a
covering, was found in the
backyard at 885 SW Jaguar
Place.
According to Lake City
Police Department public
information officer Lt. Joe
Moody, authorities were
notified about the body
shortly after 5 p.m.
'We were called to scene
by the homeowner," Moody
said.

Shortly after the prop-
erty was cordoned off with
yellow police tape, includ-
ing a red pickup truck
and: white car, which were
parked in the driveway at
the house.
Despite findings made
during the preliminary
investigation, authorities
have not been able to iden-
tify the body.
'"The shape the body
was in, we don't know their
identification. It looks like
a person of Latin descent,"
Moody said. "It appears to
be a woman, but we are not
sure."

Vehicles

More than 20
vehicles struck at
hotels and motels.

More than 20 vehicles
parked in local hotel and
motel parking lots had their
windows busted and were
broken into earlier this week,
with thieves making off with
thousands of dollars in cash,
electronics, jewelry, tools
and two firearms, according
to police reports.
The Lake City Police
Department has launched
an investigation into the
vehicle burglaries which
took place on two occasions
over a three-day period. A
total of 25 vehicles were
burglarized during the
three-day period.
The first incidents
took place Monday, at
the Jameson Inn on SW
Commerce Boulevard,
when thieves broke into and
ransacked' three vehicles
stealing $1,335 of personal
items from the cars.

Single
copy price
of paper
to increase

Jump to 75 cents
is first daily price
hike in nine years.

The price of daily single
issues of the Lake City
Reporter will increase to
75 cents per copy on
Tuesday morning.
"The daily newspaper
has been 50 cents per copy
since 2000," said Reporter
Publisher Todd Wilson.
"We have done all we can
to maintain the price for
nine years, but now we
must increase the single-
copy price by a quarter.
The unprecedented rise
in the cost of newsprint
and energy during the
last two years was the decid-
ing factor in our reluctant
decision."

"They (FDLE) will pro-
cess the scene and look I lk


for any type of forensic
evidence," Moody said. He
said the process could take
up to six hours. 'They'll go
through everything with a
fine-tooth comb to try to
identify the victim and to
try to find a suspect."
After the initial inves-
tigation is completed,
authorities are sched-
uled to send the body to
the Jacksonville Medical
Examiner's Office for an
autopsy.
"The autopsy should be
done Saturday (today) and
I'm hoping they'll be able
to determine a cause of
death," Moody said. '"The
toxicology report could
take several weeks."

2 council members oppose hiking Girls Club fees

from the victims.
"They (thieves) basically
busted the windows out of
the vehicles, reached in and
grabbed the loose items
inside," Lake City Police
Department public infor-
mation officer Joe Moody
said. "We have no suspect
information whatsoever."
Then, late Tuesday
night or early Wednesday,
thieves struck again target-
ing cars, mini-vans, sports
utility vehicles and pickup
trucks in the parking lots
at Best Western, Ramada
Inn, Fairfield Inn, Comfort
Inn, Hampton Inn and the
Country Inn & Suites.
The thieves broke into 22
vehicles under the cover of
darkness by breaking their


windows. Five vehicles at
Best Western, nine vehicles
at Ramada Inn, one vehicle
at Fairfield Inn, four vehicles
at Comfort Inn, one vehicle
at Hampton Inn and two
vehicles at Country Inn &
Suites were broken into dur-
ing the Wednesday morning
string of burglaries.
"Once we saw one, we
started looking around
and found numerous
others," Moody said of the
burglaries.
According to Lake City
Police Department reports,
items the thieves stole
Wednesday morning were
valued at $20,544.
Stolen items included
laptop computers, fishing
equipment, a pistol and shot
gun, GPS units, CDs and
DVDs and. almost $10,000
worth of jewelry and tools.

fees for Girls Club partici-
pants.
Hill and Moses .are rec-
ommending to the three
other City Council members
to not increase the fees.
Wednesday night, Moses
seconded Hill's motion in
that regard when they were
meeting with other members

Steve Baltzley presented
results from a study that
showed the city subsidized
funding for the Girls Club
operations in 2007 for
almost $90,500 and in 2008
for more than $102,300.
City staff had been
asked by the previous City


Council to search for ways
to cut the deficit from the
Girls Club.
Baltzley's said the aver-
age number of participants
in 2007 and 2008 was 413
girls, with only 28 to 29
percent of them being Lake
City residents. The remain-
ing 71 to 72 percent live
in other parts of Columbia
County.
By increasing the month-
ly fee from $77.08 to $97.73,
Baltzley said, it will recap-
ture the debt. This would
be a 27 percent increase,
he said. Moses said that
$20 monthly increase is
mpre than some families
can handle now.

worker, said he does not
believe this program must
be self-sufficient While the
city imposed an edict where
adult recreation programs
must be completely funded

protective farm laborer. According to the
Columbia County Census of 1870, Parnell
owned real estate valued at $100 and

to be useless. Coppock said
previous attempts at sliding
scales or discounts engen-
dered discontent among
participants and families.
When one family paid
a certain fee and another

for the Parnells that will be planted in

live oak will be planted at the Southside

will be planted at Richardson Community

Florida Arbor Day celebration.
The event was attended by local city
and county officials. District 5 County
Commissioner Scarlet Frisina said the
event was a "great opportunity to look to
our future while remembering our past."

On a separate Moses-
Hill motion, the two City
Council members are going
to recommend to the coun-
cil as a 'whole that it con-
sider seeking an interlocal
agreement with the County
Commission to help fund
the Girls Club.
As members of an advi-
sory committee, Hill and
Moses can only recom-
mend to the City Council
as a whole. The next meet-
ing of City Council is set to
start at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

what Martin Luther
King Jr. achieved in his
39 years.
From his organization of
the Montgomery Bus Boycott
in 1955 and co-founding of
the Southern Leadership
Conference in 1957 to his
J1963 March on Washington
and acceptance of the Nobel
Peace Prize in 1964, King
laid the foundation for the
attainment of dreams that are
still being realized today.
On Monday, we will rightly
honor the work and legacy of
this leader, a man who believed
strongly in civil rights, but
more strongly in human rights.
Indeed, Martin Luther King
Jr. believed so passionately
Sin the inalienable rights of
humankind that he fulfilled
-the prophecy of his statement,
"A man who won't die for
something is not fit to live."
On April 4, 1968, this human
lights icon was assassinated on
a motel balcony in Memphis,
Tenn.
Let not the tragic death of
Martin Luther King Jr. be the
end of his legacy. Instead, as
our country marches even this
'.week toward '.'one nation under'
I God," let us instead turn to
another of King's statements,
1and one that is.most telling of,
his life's work: "I have decided
to stick with love. Hate is too
great a burden to bear."

Elementary School in Stockton,

We can alluse a belly laugh


A n unusual birth
occurred just
recently. The baby
was born with one
clenched fist. A
great smile was a constant on
the baby's face and an audible
giggle was almost continuous.'
They just couldn't get the fist
open and the more they tried
the more the baby giggled.
Finally, one of the attending
doctors used a smooth
instrument and one finger at a
time was released. When the
last finger was loosened and the
tiny fist opened there it was,
THE PILL.
The ancient teacher of
correct speech was interviewing
a prospective student. At
the early age of six, the boy
continued with constant talk,
telling the Master all about his
life. The tutor turned to the
mother and said, "Madam, I will
have to charge you twice the
normal tuition!" She exclaimed,-
"Why is that true?" To which he
replied, "Not only must I teach
your boy how to speak, I must
first teach him how to shut up!!"
Times were hard and in an
effort to save on the electric
bill, the aged couple turned the
electric clock off before retiring.
"Abe, you forgot to turn the
clock off tonight. Get up and
do it." When no response was
offered, she jammed him in the
ribs and repeated the demand.
He finally answered, "Libby, I've
been thinking. I believe there
would be more wear and tear on
the mattress getting in and out
of bed, than we could save on
the electric bill.
Two caterpillars rumbled..
along, with the front legs
stretching and the read legs
humping. The going was slow
but sure. Suddenly they caught
sight of a beautiful butterfly that
came dancing by. Zipping from
one flower to another and all at
once zoomed up into the blue.
They looked at each other and
declared, "I'd never get on one
of those things for nothing!"
The woman was complaining
before the circuit judge about

her husband. "Judge, he is
the laziest creature that ever
walked. He don't buy me
nuthin,' or take me no where,
and just lays about the house
leaving all the work to me."
The Judge, being a man of the
scriptures thought about the
statement that the apostle Paul
gave when he talked about
doing "good for evil" (Romans
12:20). "Have you ever tried
heaping coals of fire upon his
head?" She said, "Naw sir, but,
I's tried scalding water, and that
didn't move him much at all!"
The first-grader said,
'Teacher, I ain't got no pencil."
The teacher replied in a
corrective way. "Johnny, I have
no pencil, Susie has no pencil,
Sammy has no pencil" and.
waited on the reply: 'Teacher,
ain't none of us got no pencils".
A young boy kicking at a tin
can on the dirt road was cursing
out loud. The preacher standing
by heard it and said, "Sammy,
aren't you shamed cursing
like that? Don't you know
God hears it?" Sammy sent an
accusing look at the preacher
and replied, "I've heard you
cuss in your sermons?" The
Pastor replied, "You have never
heard me curse in one of my
sermons!" Sammy said "I'll bet
you an apple pie that you do."
The preacher agreed to the
wager with a smile, and next
Sunday was glad to see the boy
in church. In the midst of his
sermon, he bellowed, "We live
by God and by God we die," and
the boy jumped to his feet and
said, "And by God you owe me
an apple pie!"
Two young kids were talking.
"Why don't you go to church


with me Sunday?" The other
replied, "I can't, I'm a member
of a different abomination!"
The family was passing
through the wheat fields in the
Midwest The little girl in the
back seat yelled, "Look mama,
at all those men jumping on
their concubines!" The mother
smiled and said, "Darling, those
are combines."
The prospective juror went
to the judge and said, "Judge, I
can't serve on this jury, why one
look at that man and anyone
would know he's as guilty as
sin." The Judge put his fore
finger to his lips and whispered,
"Shhhh, that's the District
Attorney."
The old speaker had lost most
of his memory. Consequently,
he fell into the habit of writing
everything down. After one of
his lectures, a man approached
him with a serious look. Did
you ever live in Sequash, Iowa?"
Taking out his little black book
looked under the letter "s" and
said, "Yes, years ago." Did you
ever date a woman there by
the name of Tillie Bloomers?"
Finding the letterr"d" in his
private reference book he said,
"Yes, I did." "Did you ever kiss
Tillie?" He soon paged the "D"
and said, "Yes, I did." The man
said in an accusing way, "Well,
I married her and I don't like
it" The black book was opened
again and under "k", he replied,
"Yea, I know, I didn't like it
either."
I always enjoyed the poem
that spoke of love: "They walked
together down the lane, neathh
the shining stars. He lifted for
her the Iron Gate; he lifted for
her the bar. She looked up at
him with her big brown eyes,
there was love upon her brow;
but he was only the hired man
and she was a Jersey cow."
I wonder whatever happened
to the good old fashioned "belly

Duane E. Dopier
Mr. Duane E. Dopier, 88, of Lake
City, died Thursday- afternoon,
January 15, 2009, in the North
Florida Regional Hospital in
Gainesville,
following a
brief illness. -
A native of -
Rivers Junction,
Michigan, Mr. Dopier was raised
in Lake Wales, Florida and
moved to Columbia County in
1940. He was a member of the
Columbia High School Class of
1941 and was still active with his
class reunions. After graduation
he joined and served in the U.S.
Army during World War II. When
he returned from the war Mr.
Dopier farmed and worked for
Metal Products for many years.
After leaving Metal Products he
went to work with the Florida
Department of Transportation
and worked as a park ranger
until retiring in 1982. Mr. Dopier
was very active following his
retirement. He spent his time
attending auctions and visiting
yard sales purchasing old furniture
and tools that he ultimately
refinished and re-sold. He was
an avid fisherman, loved to work
in his garden and especially
enjoyed the work he did with his
church. He was a member of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints 3rd Ward. Mr. Dopier
was preceded in death in 2006
by his wife of sixty-five years,
Merlean Douberley Dopier. Mr.
Dopier is survived by his son,
Linden E. "Buddy" Dopier of
Lake City.Funeral services for
Mr. Dopier will be conducted
at Noon on Monday, January
19, 2009 in the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints
(Old Country Club Road) with
Bishop David Morse conducting.
Interment will follow in the
Ebenezer Cemetery. The family
will receive friends for one hour
prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Catherine "Cathie" Jones
Roberts, 78, lost a courageous
battle with cancer on Wednesday
(January 14, 2009). She was a
resident of Melbourne,FL. She
was a graduate of the Crane
School of Music at The State
University of New York at
Potsdam. She retired in 1990 after
many years of teaching music in
public schools. She is preceded
in death by her parents, Gordon
and Catherine Schubert Jones
and a son, Brian Roberts. She is
survived by her loving husband of
54 years, William "Bill" Roberts
of Melbourne,FL; two sons,
David Roberts of Valdosta,GA
and Craig Roberts (wife Mattie)
of Waycross,GA; Daughter-in-
law, Margaret Roberts of Lake
City,FL; nine grandchildren and
6 great grandchildren; brother,
brother and sister-in-law, Gordon
S. and Marty Jones of Papillion,
NE and a niece and nephew. A
private celebration of life will be
held Monday .evening (January

of Gulfport, FL, brother; Stanley
Robert Whitman, of Smithville
Flats, NY, step sister; April
(Lance) Studer, of Binghamton,
NY, step brother; Patrick

Forget,

and press

on in life
W while sitting
in a Roman
prison cell,
possibly
facing
execution, the apostle
Paul writes one of the
most optimistic, uplifting
and encouraging letters.
Addressed to "the saints
in Christ Jesus who are in
Philippi," (Philippians 1:1)
with whom he has had
fellowship for years, Paul
writes a personal letter
encouraging them to forget
and press on.
The third chapter of
Philippians records some
advice as to how they
can forget "what lies
behind" (3:13) and
'"press on toward the
goal for the prize of the
upward call of God in
Christ Jesus" (3:14).
His first piece of advice
is to "rejoice in the Lord"
(3:1). Paul wants them to
always be rejoicing about
the things which happened
to him as well as to them.
Paul considered his
imprisonment something
to rejoice about because
the gospel was preached
to "the whole praetorian
guard" (1:13). Paul
believed that everything
could be used for the
spreadinglof the gospel.
Secondly he wanted
them to "beware" of
certain people; whom
he labels as "dogs," "evil
workers," and "false
circumcision" (3:2). These
were people who were
teaching things which
placed confidence in
"fleshly" things like from
what Hebrew tribe one
was born, what "party"
within the Hebrew nation
one belonged, and whether
or not one's righteousness
was "in the Law" (3:4-6).
Paul tells them he has "far
more" but he "counted (all
these things) as loss for
the sake of Christ" (3:7).
Thirdly he wanted them
to think about the value of
"knowing Christ Jesus" as
compared to these "fleshly"
things. He counted these
things as "loss" and
"rubbish" (3:8). Being
found in Christ at the
resurrection day was very
important to Paul.
Finally, he wanted them
to follow his example
and others "who walk
according to the pattern
you have in us" (3:17).
Paul did not want the
Philippians to walk like
those who were "enemies
of the cross" who were
interested only in "earthly
things" (3:18, 19). Paul
wanted them to remember
that their "citizenship
(was) in heaven" where
one day Jesus would
"transform [their] body ...
into conformity with the
body of His glory" (3:21).
Living for Christ on this
earth and the anticipation
of living with his Lord in
Heaven was top priority
in the life of the apostle
Paul (1:21-23). How could
he do it? By forgetting the
past and pressing on to
the goal. We can too. Let's
forget and press on!

Gators

recruiting

success
F or the Florida
Gators signing
day just got a
little easier.
After
winning a championship
on Jan. 8, the Gators
knew that they would
return the majority
of their stars trying
to repeat as national
champions. However, the
lifeline of college football
is based on recruiting.
Though the Gators
have a list of stud
prospects committed to
their'2009 signing class,
the biggest recruits they
landed have been at UF
for three years.
Florida was locked in
a recruiting battle with
the NFL for stars Tim
Tebow, Percy Harvin,
and Brandon Spikes.,
They were able to win
two of those battles with
Tebow and Spikes set to
return to Florida for their
senior seasons.
What will it mean for
! Florida next season?
It means that besides
from a statistical vantage
point, the Gators will have
their biggest emotional
leaders returning for a
chance to repeat
You can't find the
kind of leadership these
two guys brought to the
Gators on the street.
Players that embody
the leadership of Tebow
only come along once
in a great while. You'd
be hard pressed to
find another player in
the nation that played
through all but one game
of last season with a
separated shoulder.
That alone is enough
to inspire the majority of
ones teammates when
a player is willing to put
his body on the line for
a win, but his biggest
leadership factor comes
from the passion he
shows on the field.
He doesn't do a lot of
talking, but you can see
the passion that he plays
with on every down. You
can see it when he lowers
his head for two yards,
instead of sliding like
most quarterbacks.
Spikes leads in much
of the same way. He's not
a player that you're going
to see in a lot of post-
game news conferences.
He's the kind of player
that you notice when the
defense is on the field.
Spikes is the kind of
guy that makes a big
play, and then jumps
around before high-
fyiving a teammate. He's
not the kind of guy that
needs to flex his muscles,
although he did punt a
ball into the stands after
returning an interception
for a touchdown.
So, make no mistake,
no matter where Florida
finishes in the recruiting
battle this season, they'll
already have their
biggest two recruits
returning for a senior
season.

The Tigers fought foul
trouble all night, but it was
one they didn't make that
proved costly.
Columbia High dropped
a 57-52 overtime decision
to visiting Eastside High yn
a District 4-5A basketball
game on Friday.
After trailing by 11 points
at the end of the first quar-
ter, the Tigers used a 12-0
run to take a 25-23 lead at

Tonight will mark the
final game for many foot-
ball players in the greater
Columbia area as they
take part in the second
annual East-West Senior
All Star Game at Memorial
Stadium in Lake City
at 6 p.m.
Coach Demetric
Jackson of Fort White
High will coach the East
squad while coach Joey
Pearson takes command
of the West squad.
Though the teams have
only been practicing for
a week, Jackson expects
some of his players to help
bring some continuity to
the East squad.
"It will help out our
offense having guys that
already know the system,"
Jackson said. "With three
offensive linemen, a wide
receiver, and a running
back, it will help some of
the players that haven't
been in our system. The
tackles can help out
the guards, and Joraan
Dewhirst can help out
the receivers. On defense
it's not as big of a deal,
because it's more of a
reaction thing."
While Dewhirst played
receiver at Fort White,
he'll be taking the snaps
under center at the All


Star game.
"Dewhirst has a little
better grasp with our ter-
minology, and we don't
want to put Kam Fasnacht
in a bad situation early,"
Jackson said. "He'll play,
but Jordan has a little bet-
ter grasp whit our terms."
The passing game will
most likely take a back
seat to what the East
squad tries to accomplish
on the ground, because
they feature a running
back that coach Jackson is
very familiar with.
"Obviously with Xavier
Blake at running back and
myself calling plays, we're
going to figure out what
he can do against guys
that are equal in talent,"
Jackson said. "I'd also like
to see what Marquis Davis
can do, because if he flies
around like he did in prac-
tice, we'll do pretty good."
Knowing whats going
to show up still remains
one of the chief concerns
heading into the game,
because the players have
only been practicing"
together for a week.
"One day we'll look pret-
ty good, but then others
we look like a team that's
only practiced for a week
together," Jackson said.
What the players will not
lack is enthusiasm as many
of them will be participat-
ing in their final game.
"The guys are show-
ing a lot of enthusiasm to
show what they can do in
this setting," Jackson said.
"Everyone's doing well."
