Lakes man was injured in a
Wednesday morning wreck
when he lost control of his
truck while towing a car
and plowed into a parked
semi and its trailer, accord-,
ing to police reports.
Michael Lopez, 26, Miami
Lakes, who was towing the
car, was slightly injured in
the mishap.


The wreck occurred
around 9 a.m. Wednesday
on Interstate 75 about
two miles south of U.S.
Highway 441.
According to Florida
Highway Patrol reports,
Lopez was traveling south-
bound on the roadway in a
2004 Dodge truck towing
a 1964 Chevrolet on a tow
dolly. The second vehicle
involved in the wreck, a
2007 Kenworth semi with
a trailer, was parked on the
west shoulder of the 1-75
southbound exit ramp from
the Ellisville rest area.


Lopez told authorities
the tow dolly began to sway
and he lost control of the
Chevrolet on the tow dolly.
Lopez' truck traveled to
the roadway's west shoul-
der, then across the exit
ramp, while beginning to
rotate counter-clockwise.
The Chevrolet collided
with the semi trailer and
the impact caused the
Chevrolet to rotate clock-
wise, as it collided with
the left side of the semi
trailer. Lopez' truck and

Heralding its 150th anni-
versary of changing its name
from "Alligator" to "Lake
City," this growing municipal-
ity kicks off a year of events
today and tonight to celebrate
its history.
A gathering is scheduled
to start at noon in Olustee
Park, which is on the cor-
ner of Marion, Avenue (U.S.
Highway 441) and Duval
Street (U.S. Highway 90). It is
free and open to the public.
Mayor Stephen Witt
is scheduled to welcome
everyone. Members of the
Columbia High School Army
Jr. Reserve Officer Training
Corps are slated to raise the
American flag and then hoist
the Sesquicentennial flag.
Audre' Washington is listed to
sing the national anthem.
The Rev. Sam Taylor of
First Assembly of God is
scheduled to give the invoca-
tion. The Rev. Nick Harwell of
Life Church is slated to read
Psalm 1 as 150 Days of Praise
begins,
The mayor is on the agenda

IDA may get custody of county properties

The Columbia County Industrial
Development Authority may soon get
the reins to several pieces of county
property which could be used to
entice potential businesses to settle
in the area.
During tonight's Columbia County
Commission meeting, County
Manager Dale Williams, is scheduled
to make a presentation to county offi-
cials to go forward with the idea.
The county commission meet-
ing will take place at 7 p.m. at the
Columbia County School Board
Administrative Complex Auditorium,
372 W. Duval St.
'The county owns certain parcels
of property which occasionally are
requested by businesses as part of an
industrial development project. We're
trying to make sure these properties
are best represented," Williams said.
The laws governing how the
Industrial Development Authority and
the Board of County Commissioners
holds and represents public prop-
erty are not the same and giving the


IDA authority to make deals with the
property become a county asset.
"We're suggesting we basically
allow these parcels be to held in
custody of the IDA and give them
permission to market it for indus-
trial development projects," Williams
said.
Though the county staff is making
the recommendation, county officials
will have an opportunity to vote in
favor or against the suggestion.
In addition, Gerald Hoyt, a grant
writer for Meridian Behavioral
Healthcare, is seeking permission
from the county to apply for a $350,000
Adult Drug Court grant.
"Hoyt and the court administrator,
Sandra Williams, met about a month
ago with the internal auditor and
they discussed the parameters of this
grant," Williams said.
Drug court is a specialty court
within the local court system, which
doesn't have a specific funding
source.
"They (Hoyt and Williams) are
looking for moneys to provide the
services that drug court provides,"
Williams said.


When an adult is convicted of a
drug charge, the court has the option,
as part of the sentencing process, to
send the adult to drug court. Drug
Court is designed to provide rehabili-
tative services for people convicted
of drug-usage related crimes and in
some cases, provide additional assis-
tance to the adult who was charged.
Columbia County also has as juve-
nile drug court. A portion of that
court's funding is provided from a fee
the county levies and a percentage
of the revenue from the fee is ear-
marked for juvenile drug court.

Happy birthday,
Lake City.
Exactly 150
years ago, on
Jan. 15, 1859, a
legislative bill to change the
name of Alligator, a small North
Florida town, was introduced
by Col. Robert Brown. The
new name, Lake City, better
reflected the natural beauty of
the area, settlers thought.
Today, much 'of the natural
beauty so prized by Lake City's
earliest residents has been
spared even while the city has
,grown around it. And a noon
event today in Olustee Park,
the first in a yearlong series of
free events commemorating
the city's sesquicentennial,
provides a good venue for
the city to showcase how the
nature and the nurture of a city
can be intertwined.
History runs deep through
North Florida, and that's
especially true in Lake City
with roots that trace to a
Seminole Indian, Halpatter
Tustennuggee Chief
Alligator.
We look forward to
celebrating the founding of our
historic city, and its roots, even
as we eye the future. After all,
that's what birthdays are for.

A Lake City worker on
loan to the county is uncer-
tain whether he will have a
job at the end of February,
according to information
released Wednesday night
at the Lake City Recreation
Advisory Committee meet-

Mario Coppock will have

poses after Feb. 28. When
Columbia County took

- Center and the Richardson
Community Center, it
) sought Coppock because of
his talent and experience.
A contract was negoti-
ated between the city and
the county, where Coppock
1 was a city worker on loan
- to the county. After Feb. 28,

Past 10 months, when this
process started, there had
been verbal discussion
showing Coppock would
receive a raise, according
to discussion at the meet-
ing Wednesday night. .
Coppock has received no
increase in salary.

budget time for the city,
Reynolds said, the city did
not fund Coppock's former
position. It is an unfunded
position.
Therefore, to take
Coppock back, there must
be funds appropriated.
City Attorney Herbert
Darby said a contract was
made between the city
and the county to assure
Coppock would have a
30-year vestment.

county. If Coppock became
a county employee before

he would lose the vesting
to be at 30 years, although
he is already vested for
retirement from the city.
The city pays Coppock
and the county reimburses
the city for every bit spent
for this employee, Darby
said.
"The discussion that
I was involved in," Darby
said, "was that when this
contract ended, on Feb. 28,
2009, that he (Coppock)
would be a permanent
employee of the county."
Darby answered City
Councilwoman Melissa
Moses's question regard-
ing verbal commitments.
Commitments made out-
side of this contract are not
binding on anyone, Darby,
said.
Reynolds said he would
contact Williams and seek
to discover the county's
intentions in regard to
Coppock. If the county
does not intend to make
Coppock a county worker,
the city would have'to make
new appropriations in the
budget, Reynolds said, if
Coppock was to continue as
a city employee.

about sales prospects in the,
months ahead, according to
the report based on infor-
mation collected between
late November and Jan. 5.
.The Fed report also
found economic activity
declined in a range of man-
ufacturing industries along

sales helped send stock pric-
es down. The Dow Jones
industrials lost nearly 250
points, or over 2.9 percent,
and the other major indexes
fell about 3 percent.
The December sales
drop was led by a huge 15.9
percent fall in sales at gaso-
line service stations, which
reflected in large part the
big decline in prices at the
pump during the month.
Retail gasoline prices
have rebounded some-
what, to about $1.79 nation-
ally. But that decline hasn't
managed to reverse falling
demand.

The Web site has' chronicled the shoot-
ing and gave a brief, personal glimpse into
Raulerson's life, with comments from her
husband, John, and also detailed her job.
Raulerson, 56, was murdered July 22
while she was working at the Joy America
Food Store on U.S. Highway 441 North, near
Interstate 10, during an armed robbery.
According to police reports, a man
entered the store, brandished a small hand-
gun and demanded money. The suspect
initially shot Raulerson in the arm, and
she complied with the robber's demands
and gave him the money. However, when
he turned to leave the store, he fatally shot
her.
The shooter is described as a black male,
approximately 6 feet tall, and was last seen
wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, white


sneakers and long shorts.
According to information from the
"America's Most Wanted" Web site, author-
ities are describing the suspect as being
25 to 35 years old, standing 5 feet 10 to 6
feet 2 inches tall, with an average build.
The updated description of the suspect
describes him as wearing a dark, hooded
sweatshirt with a baseball-style cap under
the hood, long jean shorts, bright white
sneakers, sunglasses,, and a shirt with
stripes.
Authorities also say they are looking for
a 1993-1995 four-door Buick Regal with
white paint and black trim as part of their
investigation.

professor of black popular
culture at Duke University.
It recalls the 1965 the-
atrical classic "Day of
Absence," a one-act sat-
ire by black playwright
Douglas Turner Ward that
ponders events in a ficti-,
tious Southern town when
all of the black people sud-
denly go missing.
"There's a symbolism
to this moment that would
allow that they stay home
and celebrate in their own
*ways," said Neal, who plans
to watch the ceremony
with his daughters at their
school.
Some businesses, par-
ticularly those with a large
number of black employees,
will accommodate workers,
realizing the significance of


the day.

be closed to give the staff
"an opportunity to partici-
pate in the experience" of
the inauguration, said its
chief executive officer

a local chapter of The 100
Black Men of America,
an organization of profes-
sional men who serve as
mentors and role models

Many from there will
spend at least part of their
day at a boys' charter
school in Atlanta, watching
the ceremony with about
175 sixth- and seventh-

few who will interrupt their
workdays to volunteer.
"We want to sit with these
young men and have a con-
versation with them about
the importance of what this
means to the nation, to the
world and the image for
young African-American
men to see (Obama) with
his wife and family and
what this can mean for

Lopez was treated for minor injuries at
the scene, but he was not taken to a hospi-
tal, reports say.
Authorities did not immediately release
the identity of the semi driver, who was
t sleeping in the truck's rear cab when the


wreck occurred. He was not injured in the
incident.
The semi was not damaged in the wreck,
but the trailer damage was estimated at
$1,000. The Chevrolet being towing had
about $500 worth of damage.
Lopez was charged with careless driving
in the incident.

the young athletes on both
teams may be meeting for
years to come.
Propelled by three for-
feits, Columbia carved out
a 50-23 win.
'The kids are doing
well," CHS head coach
Andrew Porter said. "We
are a very young team -
we only had two seniors out
there tonight and they
are learning. We are going
to Suwannee this weekend
and will get a real good
look at the schools in our
district."
The Indians won four
matches, with one forfeit.
"We are looking pretty


good," Fort White head
coach Jason Howard said.
"We have a couple of good
leaders, but we are still the
team that started out as
middle-schoolers, Once
they mature, we will be
where we need to be."

East squad gets geared

for football,
teams from
all across the region are
gearing to hit the gridiron
one last time.
It will be the first time
that many players from
Columbia High and Fort
White High will take the
field together as part
of the same unit for the
East-West Senior All Star
Football Game at 6 p.m.
on Saturday at Memorial
Stadium.
Not only will the local
teams take part, but also
players from Baker County,
Bradford, Hamilton
County, Newberry
High, and Union County
high schools will be
participating as part of the
East squad.
It's an opportunity for
seniors to show off their
talents one last time in an


effort to pick up one of the
few remaining scholarships
that colleges have left to
offer.
For some players, it's the
final time they'll be able to
put on shoulder pads.

of Fort \White was chosen
as this year's head coach
of the East squad after
his team completed a 9-1
regular season.
"Ifs a great opportunity
for kids in our area to go
out and compete against
other talented players
that are seniors," Jackson
said. "The Columbia Youth
Football Association does
a good job of putting this
together."
Jackson will be joined by
coaches from all over the
area including last year's
coach, Bobby Johns, of
Baker County.
"It doesn't bother me
being put with other
coaches," Jackson said.
"I'm not one to try to
dictate. I don't want to
sit back either. I'm a guy
that tries to coach at
every position, and all the
coaches should be able
to do that. We have good,
quality coaches."
Putting together a game


plan in under a week is one
of the challenges that both
sides will have to deal with,
but coach Jackson sees his
squad coming together .
"Our schemes are going
to be simple," Jackson
saidoThere will be lots of
running, and the defense
must base out of a 4-3. We
can only blitz inside the
10-yard line. We will use a
lot of Pro-I stuff, and there
won't be a lot of throwing."
Overall, it's an
opportunity for players to
interact, and build a bond
outside of the team they've
grown comfortable with.

Columbia High basket-
ball has district powerhouse
Eastside High coming in
Friday and the Tigers are
planning a post-game cel-
ebration that includes play-
ers and fans.
It will be Taco Bell Night
at CHS, as well as a triple-
header of hoops.
The 7:30 p.m. varsity
tipoff will be preceded by a
freshman game at 4:30 p.m.
and a junior varsity game
at 6 p.m.
'Taco Bell was a major
contributor to us getting
the locker room complet-
ed," CHS head coach Trey
Hosford said. "We want peo-
ple to come to the game and
support us. Immediately
after the game, the whole


team and coaching staff will
go to Taco Bell and we are
inviting people to join us."
Columbia has its work cut
out for the celebration to be
one of victory. Eastside is
6-1 in District 4-5A, second
only to Gainesville High's
6-0.
Coach Pop Williams'
Rams, who beat Columbia
60-38 in Gainesville, will
bring in Dennis Mavin and
also Jerrod Owen, who
torched the Tigers for 23
points.
Columbia is currently at
the bottom of the district
heap, tied with Vanguard
High at 2-5.
Saturday (7 p.m. at home)
opponent Leesburg High is
3-4, while Lake Weir High is
3-5 and Forest High is 2-4.
"Things are going to be
decided in the last week
and there will be a lot of
tiebreakers," Hosford said.
"When all is said and done,
Gainesville and Eastside
will be battling for the


No. 1 seed."
With five games remain-
ing, Columbia is looking for
that coveted No. 3 seed for
the district tournament.
"The good thing with our
remaining schedule is only
one game is on the road,"
Hosford said.


Columbia has settled into
a starting lineup of Dont'ae
Davis, Jerry Thomas,
Dexter Dye, Julio Viens
and Tiger Powell. The
Tigers lost lan Benjamin,
who had ACL surgery on
Wednesday.
Davis is averaging 11.5
points per game. Dye has
increased his scoring aver-
age to 7.4 with 15, 22 and
10 points in the last three
games.
Thomas is averaging 9.2
points and 7.4 rebounds,
while Viens' numbers are

The Columbia High
boys soccer team defeated
Eastside 5-0 on the road
Wednesday night.
Brad Carpenter had two
goals for the Tigers.
Geoff Beardsley also
scored two goals in the
game.
Carlos Ruiz added the
Tiges final goal.
Mike Smith collected
one assist.
Carpenter also had an
assist to go along with his
two goals. "


Chase Stamper had
an assist for .the Tigers,
and Jorge Carrillo had
Columbia's only other
assist.
"We came out and scored
two goals within the. first
four minutes of the game to
take the early advantage,"
coach Trevor Tyler said.
"We didn't score
another goal before the
end of the half, but played
well on the sloppy field due
to the weather this week.
We were able to score two
goals again before the end
of the second half."


The Tigers win moved
their record to 14-4-3 on the
season.
Columbia has a district
mark of 7-2-2 with the dis-
trict tournament approach-
ing on Tuesday.
Jordan Lehman scored
a goal on Tuesday night
against Forest High in the
Tigers 3-1 win.
The goal was original-

holiday break, Columbia
High's boys junior varsity
soccer team turned in a
three-win performance last
week.
The team now stands
at 10-2 after shutting out
Eastside, Gainesville and
Leesburg high schools.'
AgainstEastside, athome
on Jan. 5, the team con-
trolled play for 2-0 victory.
A first-half goal was scored
by Drew Waller on an assist
from Nick Tuttle (who
has since been moved to.
varsity), putting the Tigers
up 1-0 in the early going.
In the second half,
Alfredo Martinez scored
on a crossing shot,
placing the ball just over
the keeper's head in the top
of the goal with 6 minutes
left to play.
Against Gainesville at
Citizen's Field on Jan. 7,
the Tigers were good for
a 3-0 performance. Waller
scored in the first half on an
assist from Hunter Grow.
In the second half, Grow
added his own goal on an
assist from Kyle Katona.
Waller scored the final goal
on an assist from Grow.
On Friday, the Tigers
took down visiting
Leesburg, 4-0. Goals were
scored by Waller, with two,
Grow and Katona.
