Child dies in weekend wreck woman

24-year-old driver had three
children traveling with her.

O'BRIEN -An 11-year-old Suwannee County
girl was killed in a Saturday wreck when the
sports utility vehicle she was traveling in as a
passenger ran up an embankment, overturned
and tossed her from the vehicle, police reports
say.


Ayllisa Jones, 11, of O'Brien, was pronounced
dead at the scene, while the vehicle's driver,
Nicole Marie Sallas, 24, also of O'Brien, was
hospitalized with serious injuries.
Two other children were also traveling in
the vehicle: Elizabeth Jones, 11 months, and
Majorie Jones, 2. Reports say neither of the
children were properly restrained before the
crash and both were taken to the Shands Live
Oak with minor injuries.
The wreck happened 12:50 p.m. Saturday on
89th Road in Suwannee County, approximately


three miles north of O'Brien.
According to Florida Highway Patrol reports,
Sallas was traveling southbound on 89th Road in
a 2003 Pontiac, when for unknown reasons, she
lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle then trav-
eled onto the east shoulder of the roadway, up
an embankment and rolled over, tossing Jones
from the right, front seat.
The vehicle continued to travel in a southeast
direction until it struck a pine tree on its right

A Lake City woman
received minor injuries
Sunday when she lost
control of the vehicle as it


went into a curve, left the
roadway and overturned on
McFarlane Avenue, police
reports say.
Sarah. Jean, 39, of Lake
City suffered the injuries in,:
the 3 p.m. mishap.
According to Lake City
Police Department 'reports,
Jean was traveling north-
bound in a 1998 Kia sports


utility vehicle on McFarlane
Avenue and as her vehicle
entered the S-curve south
of Thornwood Terrace, she
lost control.
After Jean lost control of
the vehicle, it continued to
travel west, left the road-
way, overturned and came
to rest in a ditch about 5-


feet deep.

City Police Department,
Lake City Fire Department
and Columbia County
EmergencyMedicalService
responded to the scene,
where it was reported Jean
received cuts and scrapes
in the wreck. She refused


to be taken to the hospital
in an ambulance.
Reports say Jean claimed
the roadway was slippery
,from recent rains. The
investigating officer noted
she was at fault in the
wreck for traveling too fast
for conditions and careless
driving, but no citations
were issued.

A Columbia County
woman under investigation
for allegedly taking more
than $15,000 from a local
cheer leading program
was arrested last week in
Georgia on a grand theft
warrant from another Lake
City Police Department
investigation.
Yvette Denese
Stephenson, 40, was
arrested in Brunswick,
Ga., Thursday, Jan., 8, by
a Glynn County Sheriff's
Office deputy.
According to Glynn
County Sheriff's Office
undersheriff Ron Corbett,
Stephenson was arrested
by a Glynn County deputy
for being a fugitive from
justice.

Water Management District
is progressing, according to
information released from
the SRWMD.
MFLs are the minimum
water flows and/or levels
adopted by the SRWMD to
prevent significant harm to
water resources or ecology
of an area as a result of per-
mitted withdrawals, accord-
ing to SRWMD spokesper-

resource."
While people in North
Florida once thought water
here was an infinite natu-
ral resource, it does have
a limit. It can be used up,
he said. There was a time
when North Florida resi-
dents feared South Florida
was going to take its water.
South Florida managed
its water use and it is not


presenting a threat to this
area, he said.
People in this district
need to practice water
conservation now, he said.
Webster reminded listen-
ers that springs can dry
up. The SRWMD. is estab-
lishing MFLs as a tool to
keep this resource viable,
he said.
Some of the research is
complete and some MFLs
are established. MFLs are
completed in the Lower
Suwannee, Stalvey said,
which includes Manatee
Springs and Fanning
Springs.
MFLs are also complet-
ed in Waccasassa, which

ARREST: Youth group money missing

other details about her
arrest.
Stephenson's bond was
posted in Lake City and
she was released from the
Glynn County Jail. Corbett
said someone posted her
bond in Columbia County.
'That was the only rea-
son we were holding her,"
he said. "So they (Columbia
County Sheriff's Office)
sent us a teletype and she
was released."
According to Lake City
Police Dept. Lt. Joe Moody,
Stephenson had her bond
posted and she was released
Monday.
"She has to report in to
the bail bondsman here,"
Moody said.
The Lake City Police
Department has two ongo-
ing investigations involving
Stephenson. In one, she
possibly misappropriated
cheer leading club funds
and in another investigation
she allegedly committed
grand theft by ransacking
her apartment, causing an


estimated $32,000 worth of
damage before she fled the
area. A warrant was issued
for Stephenson's arrest for
the grand theft charges.
According to records from
the Third Judicial Circuit
State Attorney's Office,
Stephenson has been
charged with grand theft,
stemming from the incident
with her former apartment.
Lake City Police
Department is continuing
its investigation into the
missing cheer leading asso-
ciation funds.
According to Lake City
Police Department offense
reports dated Oct. 11,
Richardson Middle School
principal Keith Couey
reported that money had
been stolen from the
Lake City Cheer Leading
Association at Richardson
Middle School.
Couey's statement
said that for the past six
months there had been at
least $15,000 in cash that
was unaccounted for from


the school's cheer leading
booster club. Couey pre-
sented documentation to
LCPD which showed that
Stephens6n allegedly paid
at least four of her person-
al bills with booster club
funds.
"Stephenson has not been
seen since the money was
discovered missing from
the account," according to
the report.
Reports say that during
the 2008 cheer leading year,
140 cheerleaders joined the
Lake City cheer leading
Association at a cost of $40
each. The money was given
to Stephenson who was
in charge the program's
finances, paying liability
insurance, the homecoming
parade spots and T-shirts.
None of the listed items
were paid and provided to
the cheer leaders, reports
say. Thirty-seven receipts
were taken to the Lake City
Police Department from
parents with children on
the cheer leading squad.

Leila Lindsey, 54, initi-
ated a group in Fort White
to be part of this team. She
said she became inspired
to learn more about help-
ing people affected by
disasters after the 2004-05
school year, when she took
seven high school students
through a course to become
certified as large animal
rescuers.
Lindsey and her 55-year-
old husband, Ellis Lindsey,
also brought items to survi-
vors of the devastation from
Hurricane Katrina, she
said. Leila Lindsey noted
that although her husband


is disabled and not able to
serve on the mounted res-
cue part of the CERT, he
does work on the ground.
Shayne Morgan
of Columbia County
Emergency Management
said there are many places
where people can serve.
CERT, and he would not
expect someone to work
outside their area of com-
fort.
In CERT training, par-
ticipants learn to extinguish
small fires, open airways
of victims, control bleeding,
treat for shock, search for
and rescue victims and con-
duct other procedures to
help in emergencies.
The Lindsey couple is
part of a volunteer mounted
rescue.-team, tooj-she.- said.


Having, the ability to pro-
vide a mounted rescue is
not typical for a CERT.
'We're just a group of
normal people who, are
accustomed to riding the
trails in woods, over fallen
trees and through water,"
she said.
The training to be com-
pleted Jan. 31 is not the
end, Lindsey said. Some of
her Fort White area CERT
group plan to become
involved with amateur
(ham) radios.

Hospital complex will cost $1.2M

The Lake Shore Hospital
Authority Board expects
to have its administrative
complex completed by mid-
summer with a $1.2 million
price tag.
During Monday's Lake
Shore Hospital Authority
board meeting, Jody
Dupree, who the board
hired as its construction
manager for the project,
gave an update on project
construction work.
According to Dupree, the
project is expected to be
completed in seven months
and the total budget of the
project, excluding costs
associated with its park-
ing lot, has been listed at
$1,185,084.
Lake Shore Hospital
Authority Board Chairman,
Jack Berry said, when com-
pleted, the administrative
complex building will be
used by Shands' admin-
istrators and for Hospital
Authority offices.


"We're in the process now
of getting requests for pro-
posals for the master plan
for the entire complex," he
said.
The building will be
housed at the former site of
the Columbia County jail.
Construction on the admin-
istrative complex began in
November.
"There was a lot of demo-
lition that had to be done
and several other things,"
Berry said. "We've been
planning this for about a
year."
Berry said by build-
ing onto the former jail's
foundation, the Hospital
Authority was able to save
money.
"If we tried to build that
much space in today's mar-
ket, we would spend prob-
ably $3.5 to $4 million,"
he said. 'We're going to
accomplish the same thing
with $1 million. We'll have
10,000 square 'feet of the
best building in Columbia
County compared to a
building with 60 percent of


the strength if we build a
new building."
The administrative com-
plex building will be a state-
of-the-art, environmentally
friendly structure, he said.
The building will have an
energy efficient roof and
its heating, ventilating and
air conditioning system will
also be energy efficient.
Florida Power and Light
helped with the design and
the Hospital Authority will
get money back for install-
ing an energy efficient
roof.
'We researched this thing
pretty heavy and Florida
Power made a lot of grants
available to us in this to do
it their way," Berry said.
In other business, the
board:
Accepted the low bid of
$39,807 to have an elevator
installed in the administra-
tive complex;
Accepted the low bid
of $52,794 to Glenn I. Jones
install the HVAC in the
administrative complex.

late Irvin Bryant Sr. and Alice
Foy Singletary Bryant he was a
United States Army, Veteran of
WWII, serving in the European
theater and was decorated with
The Bronze Star. Mr. Bryant
was a co-owner of Bryant
Brothers Construction and was
a member of Pine Park Baptist
Church. He was preceded in
death by his wife of 68 years
Madge Catherine Pope Bryant
in 2008, and was also preceded
in death by three brothers, Ralph
Bryant, George Bryant, Cary
Bryant and one sister, Nell Home.

Keplinger, 73, passed
away January. 6, 2009 after
complications following cancer
treatment and stroke at Select
Specialty .in Gainesville, FL.
Lottie was born in Jacksonville,
FL and graduated from
Jacksonville's Landon High
School. She later moved to Winter
Haven and worked for Barnett
Bank in newcomer relations.
Her later years were spent in
Ellijay, GA working with the
Apple Festival for a time and then
moved to Lake City, FL and was
an active member of the Florida
Lighthouse Association. She
enjoyed the outdoors, spending
time with family and friends,
and traveling RV style. Lottie
was preceded in her death by her
daughter, Sheri Lynn (Keplinger)
Metz and her parents, John and
Nola Robertson. She is survived
by her brothers John Robertson,
Dan (Sarah) Robertson, and
sister Betty Robertson, sons
Keith (Kristina) Keplinger,
Roger (Jennifer) Keplinger, Jr.,
and Patrick (Rachelle) Keplinger

weightlifting team ended
the 24-meet winning streak
of Gainesville High by a
47-43 margin in a Friday
meet hosted by the
Hurricanes.
Including in that GHS
streak were a couple of
wins over Columbia.
"We have two team goals
every year," coach Mitch
Shoup said. "One is to go
undefeated, and the other
is to place in the top 2 in the
state. The last two years
Gainesville has been the
only team keeping us from
being undefeated."
The Lady Tigers won

classes: Katie Shaffer at 110
pounds, Jennifer Kondrach
at 119, Tara Stephens at

continues to get stronger
(270 total) and could push
to be a state qualifier."
Shaffer, with a 120-pound
lift, Williams, with a 140,
and Cecile Gomez, with a
130, set personal records in
the clean and jerk.
