the result of a lack of mois-

officials to issue wildfire
warnings for the area.

from the Florida Agriculture
and Consumer Services

the Centers for
Disease Control
and Prevention that
the teen birth rate
is escalating is bad news for
our nation, but worse news for
Columbia County.
Across the nation, the new
report indicates that the teen
birth rate in 2006 increased for
the first time in 15 years. At
that time, almost 42 of every
1,000 documented births were
to women between the ages of
15 and 19. .
Although the highest
percentages of teen births were
to women in Mississippi, New
Mexico and Texas, the state of
Florida didn't escape notice. In
line with the national trend, the
teen birth rate in the Sunshine
State increased 7 percent
or to 45.2 births per 1,000
documented birth certificates,.
from 2005 to 2006.
One way of understanding
this is by noting that states
like Florida and Texas also
claim the.largest segments
of the national population.
But the same cannot be said
of Columbia County. Here
the teen birth rate not only
increased, but more than
one-third of the county's 851
documented births were to
mothers aged 15 to 19. Sadly,
86 of those births were to
women younger than 17.
That's sad because
unplanned and unwanted
pregnancies severely limit
available opportunities for
young women, many of
whom are unprepared for,
motherhood and half of which,
or 48.8 percent in Columbia,
County, must make the trek
to parenthood unmarried to a
partner.
Where the CDC falls short
is in explaining the factors that
influence this rising trend. We
do know that culture, poverty
-and racial demographics play
a significant role. This we can
verify statistically.
But intuitively, it seems
that more significant is
education. Only by parents
and mentors talking, teaching
and communicating with our
children can we stem the,
increasing trend of our children
becoming parents.

Judgment day and a quilt full of holes


SAs I faced my Maker
at the last judgment, I
knelt before the Lord
along with many other
souls. Before each of
us was laid our lives, like the
squares of a quilt in separate
piles. An angel sat before each
of us, sewing our quilt squares
together in a tapestry of our
lives.
"As the angel took each piece
of cloth off my stack, I noticed
how ragged and empty each
of my squares was. They were
filled with giant holes. Each
square was labeled with a part
of my life that had been very
difficult, the challenge and
the temptations I had faced inr
everyday life. I saw hardships
that I endured which were the
largest holes of all.
"I glanced around me. Few
others had such squares other
than tiny holes here and there.
The other tapestries were filled
with rich color, bright hues of
worldly fortune. I gazed upon
my life and I was disheartened.
*My angel was sewing the
ragged pieces of cloth together
- like binding air. There was
little there to sew.
"Finally the time came when
each life was to be displayed,
held up to the light and the
scrutiny of truth. I had love in
my life and laughter, but there
had been times of trial and
wealth and false accusations
that took from me my world
as I knew it. I had to start
over time after time. I often
struggled with the temptation
to quit, only somehow to
muster the strength and pick
up life again. I spent many
nights on my knees in prayer,
asking for help and guidance in
my shattered life. -
."I had often been held up
to ridicule, which I endured
painfully., Each time I offered
up to the Father the hope that I
would not melt within my skin
beneath the judgment gaze of
those who unfairly judged me.
And now I had to face the truth
for what it was and accept it for

what it was. I rose and lifted the
combined squares to the light.
An awesome gasp filled the air.
I gazed around at the others
who stared at me, wild-eyed in
amazement.
"Then I looked at the tapestry
before me. Light flooded the
many holes, each creating an
image of the face of Christ.
Then the Lord stood before
me with warmth and. love in
*his eyes. He said, 'every time
you gave over your life to me, it
became my life, my hardships
and my struggles.
"'Each point of light in your
life is when you stepped aside
and let me shine through until
there Was more of me than
there was of you.
"'When there is nothing there
but God, that is when you find
out that God is all you need.
God determines who walks into
your life and it is up to you to
decide who you let walk away,
who you let stay and who you
refuse to let go.'"
Thanks to the author who
wrote this one day.
The richest man in town had
a dreamn no, a nightmare.
An angel appeared and spoke
these words, "The richest
man, in town will die tonight"
He took this to be reality and
immediately called his doctor
and lawyer and close friends.
He relayed to them the horrific
story and admitted to all who
knew that he was the richest
man in town. He begged them
all to stay with him and the
doctor repeatedly took his blood
pressure and pulse. "A little
high but nothing to be overly
concerned about," was the


ongoing report.
The night wore on and finally
he could see the grey fissures
of the coming dawn. About that
time-he heard a resounding
knock it the door. This scared
him half out bf his wits. He
sent a servant to answer. The
bedroom door opened and
standing with the servant was
a small black boy. He was from
the slave quarters and he stood
waiting for someone to give him
audience to speak. "Well, speak
up, boy; what-do you want?" The
boy hesitated, and with a tear
welling in his eye he said, "My
ma sent me to tell you, that old
Grandpa Sam just died." Who
was old Grandpa Sam? Why he
was the one who always served
willingly, gave his life to picking
cotton for his master and the
one who loved the Lord the
most-. "The'richest man in town
done died tonight."
The apostle Paul, who
admitted to be the "chief of
sinners," wrote:
"I have not yet reached my
goal and I am not yet perfect
But Christ has taken hold of
me. So I keep on running and
struggling to take hold of the
prize. I don't feel that I have
already arrived, but I forget
what is behind and I struggle
for what is ahead. I run toward
the goal so I can win the prize
of being called to heaven"
(Philippians 3:12-14).
I remember as just a little boy
singing with the congregation,
"Will there be any stars, any
stars in my crown?" I sang it
but I didn't understand it Then
we sang one of Fanny Crosby's
songs and the blind woman
wrote, "Then I shall see him
face to face and tell the story
saved by grace; then I shall see
him face to face, and tell the
story saved by grace." '
"Oh, for a quilt full of tloles."

scheduled to participate in
a variety of activities in the
upcoming months, includ-
ing the organization's sum-
mer games next month.
Events for 2009 will begin
Jan. 17, when a Columbia
County Special Olympics
basketball team competes
in the area championships
which will be hosted by
Hamilton County in Jasper.
Competing athletes
from Alachua, Columbia,
Hamilton and Marion
counties will participate in
the event.
Winners at the area
championships will contin-
ue to play in the sectional/ '
state competition.

with two other Florida
churches to provide aid
to villagers in Malawi, Africa.
The Mandarin to Malawi
Mission Task Force was
organized in 2002. The lead
church is Jacksonville's First
Baptist Church of Mandarin and
the partnering churches are
the Light of the World Christian
Church and Olivet Missionary
Baptist Church. The work is part
of the Outreach Ministries at
Olivet Missionary Baptist Church.
"We're partnering with the
First Baptist Church of Mandarin,
Pastor Dr. Gary Williams and
Light of the World Christian
Church, Pastor Earnest Berrian,
in an effort to bring to Malawi,
Africa, the gospel of Jesus
Christ as well as help build'the
infrastructure of the churches that
have been planted and minister
to the needs of the Malawian
people," said Olivet Missionary
Baptist Church Pastor Ronald V.
Walters.
Williams traveled to Malawi
in 1999 with one of his seminary
professors and was the only black
pastor to attend, out of a group of
19 people who wept there on an
evangelism mission to the capital
city of Lilongwe.
"It was after that, that I began
to talk to some of the native.
people and talk about some of the
churches in the rural country and
I discovered many of the Baptist
churches there had no roofs," he
said.
Williams returned the following
year with three staff members
from his church and formed the
task force.,
"The task force was designed
to deal with three things --the" -,
spiritual, economic and social
welfare of the people in Malawi,"
Williams said. "It was formed
in the mindset of trying to help
those local Baptist pastors roof
the churches."
As part of the mission work,
the Florida churches have been
providing clothing, food, shoes,
medicines, personal-aide items,
job training and English-speaking
classes for the Malawians.

Church joined the partnership
in 2006. During that time the
churches have sent honey to
purchase a case of Bibles in the
Malawian language and in 2008,
close to 400 care packages were
added to another case of Bibles.
"When you consider what we
just experienced in this country
with the election of the first
African-American president
and we celebrate Black History


Month year after )ear, Ithink
this (outreach ministry) does
wonders for our understanding of
what Black History is all about,"
Walters said. "I think this says
to our membership that we're
no longer a ministry that's just
community centered we're
an international ministry and as
a missionary Baptist church we
should be. We're grateful and
thankful for all the support our
members give."


Wednesday evening, Malawi
resident Anna Matwanje,
addressed Olivet members during
the church's Bible study and told
members how their donations
are benefiting the villages in the
Malawi region.
She said the churches'
donations helped many ways, both
physically and spiritually.
"With the contributions
through the money we are buying
materials for the teachers and the
students and we are doing adult
literacy for women who don't
know how to read and write," she
said. "Spiritually,,they are also
learning the bible because in the
classes the books we are using
are based on the Bible. So, they
are learning to read and write and
learning the word of God."
Eloise Mobley-Harrisoh said the
official task force is in Malawi, but
noted she serves as a member of
the Florida contingent. She said it
was importarit't6bstablish a task
force to help the people of Malawi.
."We were traveling back and
forth to Malawi and Pastor
Williams envisioned that in order
for us to make a greater impact
we needed to have consistent
contributions and someone in
place that could consistently
oversee the needs of the people
and relay those needs back to,
us so we could provide and act
accordingly."

It was Senior Night for
Columbia High's boys soc-
cer team on Friday and the
Tigers came out swinging.
Columbia shut out
Leesburg High, 6-0, in a
District 4-5A match.
The Tigers put the bum's
rush on the Yellow Jackets
(1-10-3), scoring three times
in the first 13 minutes..
"They came out and
played the way we should


play," CHS head coach
Trevor Tyler said. "This is a
great team, solid all the way
through. It is not a matter
of if they can win, but how
they play. When they play,
they have a chance to beat
anyone.
"It is a good feeling and
it was a great feeling for
Senior Night."
Seniors did their share of
shining, as Brad Carpenter
had a hat trick and Jorge
Carrillo scored one goal.
Fellow seniors Michael
Jordan and Michael Smith
each had a pair of assists
and Rob Jaeger had one
assist.
Geoff Beardsley got the


scoring started for the
Tigers with a goal from just
inside the 18 in the fourth
minute.
Chris Beardsley had the
assist.
In the seventh minute,
Geoff Beardsley put a mini-
bicycle kick on a throw-in
by Smith and scored his-
second goal. .
. Carpenter and Jordan
teamed up on the next two
goals, as Jordan sent cross-
ing passes from the left side
and Carpenter was deadly
with his shots, one at 27:00
and another 10 minutes
later.
Keeper Michael Ortiz
made a diving save in goal


on a free kick in the 36th
minute to keep Leesburg
off the board and preserve
the 4-0 halftime score..
With 10 minutes left in
the game, Smith sent a
throw-in over the leaping
keeper and Carrillo headed
it into the net.
Carpenter completed his
hat trick with three minutes
to play when he took a pass
from Jaeger and blasted' it
in on a bounce over the
keeper from 35 yards out.

The Fort White Lady
Indians defeated the
Hawthorne Lady Hornets
8-0 on Friday.
Freshman Rebecca
Onorati, who scored five
goals, led the Lady Indians
in the win.
* Meghan Binge scored
two goals for Fort White.
Shaina Perez also added
a goal.,
Fort White's Katelyn


Wilson had an assist for the
Lady Indians.
Amanda Weddle also had
an assist in the game.
"It was a good game,"
coach PerrySauls said. "They
had no shots on goal."
Sauls was pleased with
the way his team turned
around a tie earlier in the
week to come back and
win two games to end the
week.
"We didn't play well on
Tuesday," Sauls said. "We
just ran on Wednesday,
and then came back to win
the next day. To be able to
come back on Senior night,
and get two big wins this
,week was huge for us."


The Lady -Indians
improved to 10-7-3 on the
year. It's the first time that
Fort White's girls soccer
team has reached 10 wins
during a season.
Districts come up in two
weeks and the Lady Indians
host the event .as the
No. 2 seed.
Indians soccer

dominated the Hawthorne
Hornets 6-1, on Friday
night.
On Senior night, three
seniors came through with
goals starting with Joseph
Johnson's goal to begin the


scoring at 27 minutes in the
first half.
Dustin Cason scored the
Indians second goal to close
out the first half.
Matt Collins started the
second half, scoring only 26
seconds into the half with
a goal.
Seniors Angel Ovalle and
Chad Evans each added
goals to put away the.
Hornets in the second half.
The fourth senior was
Eric Greenwald in goal.
"We came in ready to
go tonight," coach Ashley
Griseck said. "We were
ready to play. We played
as a team and our intensity
was there."

on Jan. 3) and Forest High
(39-34, at home on Dec.
