Second vehicle
hits home within
eight-month span.

Eight months ago, a car
left Columbia County Road
245 about three miles from
State Road 100 and crashed
through a house at 2847 SE,
CR 245.
At about 6 on Sunday
morning, a neighbor two
doors down experienced a
similar event.


A 2006 Pontiac left the
roadway, traveled across
a small ridge, plowed
through support posts on
a front porch, went crash-
ing through a living room
wall and continued through
another wall into a bedroom,
where it came to rest in the
home at 2903 SE CR 245.
Misty Burgess, 34, of
Lake City was driving that
car, according to records.
She was not charged
because she reported to
the Florida Highway Patrol
that she swerved to miss a
dog in the road.


Jessica Durden said
she probably would have
been killed Sunday morn-
ing when Burgess crashed
through her home.
"It's unusual for me not
to' be .here," Durden said.
"I had spent the night with
a friend."
The 27-year-old Lake City
woman works for Hospice
of the. Nature Coast. Her
younger brother, Walter
Allen, 22, was not in the
house either. He had spent
the night in Gainesville.
"I'm thankful that me, my
brother, the lady who was


driving the car and the ani-
mals are all OK," Durden
said. "Definitely, God was
watching over me."
Four of her five Teactip
Yorkshire Terriers were in
the back yard at the time
of the crash. "Cricket," one
of the small terriers, was
inside, as was Durden's
Calico kitten "Ginger."
The crash awoke the.
neighborhood.
"Neighbors thought a
bomb went off when they
heard it," she said.

'Lake City man was
arrested Sunday
night following a
manhunt where he
tried to, flee the scene
of a wreck after he allegedly
caused a head-on collision while
driving under the influence of
alcohol, according to police
reports.
Joseph A Corrao, 37. was
apprehended after he fled the
scene of the wreck when his
van collided with a car. He was
later flown by helicopter to a
Gainestille hospital with serious
-injuries, as was Randall A. ,
Proffitt, a passenger in the other


car. The car's driver, Christopher
Cody Glenn,.22, of Lake City,
was also listed in serious
condition.
The wreck occurred at
approximately 8:42 p.m. Sunday
on County Road 238, just north
of October Road, in the Ellisyille
area.,
According to Florida Highway
Patrol reports, Corrao was
traveling eastbound on County
Road 238 (Providence Highway)
in a 2002 Ford van, just east of
SU.S. Highway U.S. 41/441.

of chickens bought, it is difficult
to provide a number of growers,
he said.
It is a cutback of less than 20
percent of the total amount of live
birds. This is a discontinuation of
19 contracts, Atkinson said. One
grower can have more than one
contract, he added.
The real measure of the reduced
number of live chickens being
purchased is 2 million square feet
of the 11 million total square feet
total.


Speaking from his office in
Pittsburg, Texas, Atkinson said
the company suffered "severe
financial difficulties" in 2008 and
this ultimately resulted in it filing
for Chapter 11 in federal court in
Texas.
This led to the projected layoffs
in the coming two months at the
Live Oak plant and the reduced
space used for chicken production
from this part of Florida.

Jones works for the com-
pany that created new flood
maps for Columbia County.
Jones said that before
2004, national flood insur-
ance companies relied sole-
ly on premiums for funding
research. With some help
from the Federal Emergency
Management Agency, a pro-
cess was started to update
flood maps across the
nation, Jones said.
In Florida, the map for
Columbia County was
among the first to be com-
pleted, Jones said. This map
goes into effect Feb. 4.

ers issued more than 60 citations dur-
ing a Comprehensive Roadside Sobriety
Checkpoint on New Year's Eve, according
to police reports.
The checkpoint was set up Wednesday
on U.S. Highway 90 near city limits.
Troopers issued 62a citations during the
enforcement exercise.

period, Branford Highway
motorists will see a yellow
flashing light but will not
have to stop, just as before.

Paul H. Bembry
Paul H. Bembry, age 41, of
Jasper, FL. passed away Saturday,
January 3, 2009 at South Georgia
Medical Center in Valdosta,
Georgia following an extended
illness. The Hamilton County
.native and lifelong resident
worked as a correctional officer
at Hamilton County Correctional
Institute as long as his health
permitted. Paul attended Bible
Baptist Church. Survivors
include two daughters, Macy
and Maranda Bembry, both of
Jasper; his parents, Donald and
Ann Bembry of Jasper; one
sister, Donna Turnier and three
nieces, Samantha Lucas, Demi
Turnier and Davie Ann Turnier
all of Pottsville, PA. Funeral
services will be held at 11:00
a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009 at
Bible Baptist Church near Jasper.

Bonyata,
Richard (Dick) Joseph Bonyata,
of Lake City, Florida, Dick
* Bonyata died Saturday, January 3,
2009, after 76 years of wonderful
life. Dick was born in Dysrt,
Iowa on January
28, 1932, to d
Alfred and
Wilma Bonyata.
He grew up in
Grinnell, Iowa,
along with his two brothers; John
of Tallahassee, Florida and Peter
of Genoa City, Wisconsin and his
two sisters; Ann (deceased) and
Jane Olson of Rockwall, Texas.
After graduating from Grinnell
High School where he lettered
in basketball, track, and football,
Dick attended Cornell College
on a basketball scholarship.
With the Korean War escalating,
Dick enlisted in the U. S. Army,
and following basic training he
wed Marilee Ahrens of Grinnell
on March 21, 1951. Shortly after
their wedding, he was, assigned
to the 21st Infantry Regiment,
24th Infantry Division in Korea.
While serving 'in Korea, Dick
was awarded the Purple Heart
Medal for injuries, sustained
during combat operations. Upon
receiving an honorable discharge,
from the U. S. Arm% he enrolled
at Iowa State Linikersii earning
a degree in Forestry. Following,
college,Dickalongwith'isTfailily
began a fulfilling, twenty-seven
year career with the U. S. Forest
Service, including, assignments
in Florida, Mississippi, Kentucky
and ending with retirement in
Lake City. Dick and Marilee are
members of Wesley Memorial

At one point, the house
had been on the market to
sell. Durden said she want-
ed to sell it to get away from'
the dangerous area. She has
lived there for seven years,
she said.
The crash eight months
ago and the one on Sunday
were not the only ones.
Durden witnessed a semi
tractor-trailer wreck on the
same curve, she said.
"Everyone on this curve
of CR 245 is scared," she
said. "All of the people want
to sell. You can't let your
children play in the front
yard. It's too dangerous.
People fly by here."
The speed limit is 55mph

gator estimated damage to
the Pontiac at $15,000 and
to the house at $20,000, but
Durden believes the dam-
age estimate to the house
is low.
Among the furniture that
was destroyed was a couch,
where Allen said he nor-

Bobby E. Stansel, 88 ofWellborn,
passed away Saturday, January 3,
2009 in the Lake City Medical,
Center, Lake City, F1 following
a short illness. Mr. Stansel was
born in Wellborn, Fl to John
Vincent & Kate Stevens Stansel
on November 24, 1920. Lived all
of his life in Wellborn and was a
farmer on his family farm for over
45 years, was an avid fisherman
and was an active member of
the Mt. Beulah Baptist church,
Wellborn. He is survived by two
daughters, Carol & Tim Stalvey
of Lake City and Paulette Floyd
of Wellborn; two sons, Dwight
& Glenda Stansel of Wellbornm

A Blood counts are an important tool in measuring response
Ito chemotherapy as well as a way to evaluate the side
effects on a patient. Blood is drawn from the patient and run
through a special machine that can count the number of different
types of blood cells present within the patient. Specifically, one
is looking for the numbers of white blood cells, red blood cells
and platelets.

The Columbia High girls
basketball team defeated
Suwannee High 50-42 on
Saturday in a game coach
Horace Jefferson said, "We
should have easily won,
but it was not as easy as
that."
The Lady Tigers led
in every quarter but the
fourth leading Jefferson to
feel that the girls had not
played their best saying,
"We let them get a lot of
layups over the final quar-
ter.
"I'll take half the respon-
sibility, but we have to


make those adjustments."
Shaniqua Henry contin-
ues to come into her own
as she dropped in 24 points
to lead the Lady Tigers.
"Henry is really step-
ping up with 39 points in
the last two games," said
Jefferson.
Sharmayne Edwards
had 10 points in the game
as the only other Columbia
player in double-figurs.
Moriah Harrington had
8 points and 12 rebounds.
Katrina Goodbread and
DaBrea Hill dropped in
three points each.
Simone Williamson had
two points.
'We've got to get used
to winning a big game, and
then coming back the next
night. They're only teenag-
ers, but we've got to make
sure that the same person-

The Lady Tigers have a
busy week starting tonight
when they host Hamilton
County High at 7:30 p.m.
Columbia will host Santa
Fe on Wednesday night at
7:30 marking the end of a
crucial two-game stretch.
"We've been a good road
team all year," Jefferson
said, "but we need to pick
up these two victories. All
four of our losses are at
home. Perhaps, being a
good road team, will help
us in the playoffs, if we
make the playoffs, but we
should be a better team
this year than we were last
year, at least."
The Lady Tigers will
round out their week on
Saturday against Lake Weir
High at 3 p.m.
