Orlando man
charged in deaths
ST. PETERSBURG -
Authorities have charged
an Orlando man with mur-
dering a St. Petersburg
woman and her infant son,
more than a year after they
were found slain in their
home.
Ralph Daniel Wright Jr.
was arrested Wednesday
morning in Palatka. He
was charged with two
counts of first-degree mur-
der in the deaths of Paula
O'Conner and her son,
Alijah.
O'Conner was reported
missing in July 2007 after
she failed to show up to
work.
Autopsies determined
O'Conner had been
strangled and her.son,
asphyxiated.
-olice say O'Conner
had filed a paternity suit
against Wright, a former
sergeant at MacDill Air
Force Base in Tampa,
before her death.
Florida's minimum,
wage increases
TALLAHASSEE -
Florida's minimum wage
increases to $7.21 an hour
on New Year's Day, a jump
of 42 cents for roughly
400,000 workers.
The increase, which
is based on an annual
consumer price adjust-
ment, translates to an
extra $16.80 for a 40-hour
week.
The state's minimum
wage went up to $6.15 an
hour in 2005 after voters
had approved a consti-
tutional amendment the
previous year. It has now
increased another $1.06
since.
Supporters say the .
increase is desperately
needed because Florida
has the highest rate of
job losses in the coun-
try and 10 percent of all

Man jumps from
burning condo
CLEARWATER
- Authorities say a
Clearwater man was hos-
pitalized after jumping
from the second or third-
floor balcony of his burn-
ing condo.
Rescuers arrived at the
condominium complex
late Tuesday night to find
smoke and flames billow-
ing out of the second and
third floors of the three-
story building. It took
firefighters about 30 min-
utes to put out the fire.
The man who jumped
from the building was
treated at the scene and
taken to a nearby hos-
pital. His injuries were
not life-threatening. His
identity has not been
released.
The cause of the fire is
under investigation.
Woman falls from
16th floor of hotel
ORLANDO -
Authorities say a woman
died after she fell 16
stories from her Orlando
hotel room.
Investigators say the
29-year-old woman fell just
after midnight from the 16th
floor of the Marriott World
Center hotel near Walt
Disney World. Deputies say
there was at least one other
person in her hotel room.
Authorities have not
named the victim but
say she was from Florida
and was a guest at the
hotel. It's unclear how
the woman fell the 160
feet to the ground below.

With no real explanation
other than investor specu-
lation on the value of oil,
and the impact of supply and
demand, gasoline and die-
sel fuel prices gave motor-
ists a roller-coaster ride in
Lake City, Columbia County,
Florida, the United States and
around the world in 2008.
Prices on Wednesday in
Lake City averaged $1.69 per
gallon, although Hurricane
Ike prices edged just over
$4 per gallon and brought
hundreds of complaints from
around Florida in September.
Price-gouging allegations
in Columbia County proved
unfounded, but the investiga-
tion continues, as a result of
possibly unjustified peak gas
prices in 2008.
Suspected serial
killer visited Lake City
The prime suspect in the
serial murders of hikers in
Tallahassee, Georgia and
North Carolina was in Lake
City in January of 2008. He
camped out in the Osceola
National Forest, according
to records.
Gary Michael Hilton was
arrested Jan. 4 in Georgia
in connection with the 2008
New Year's Day disappear-
ance and subsequent mur-
der of a 24-year-old Buford,
Ga., woman.
Hilton is also sus-
pected in the very similar
December death of a 46-
year-old woman, who was
beheaded, and found in the
Apalachicola National Forest
near Tallahassee. North
Carolina, police investigated
Hilton's potential involve-
meht in the disappearance
and deaths in October of
an older couple who were
hiking in mountains near
Brevard, N.C.

been arrested from a murder
that happened in Columbia
County in July of 2008.
Lake City resident Linda
Raulerson, 56, appears to
have bled to death from at
least one gunshot wound
to her upper chest during a
robbery. Three customers
found her body behind the
counter of a convenience
store near U.S. Highway
441 and Interstate 10, after
the perpetrator fled in what
was said to be a white, four-
door, 1993-95 Buick Regal,
with black trim.
E Election roundup for
2008
A number of new people
took and are taking offices
as a result of elections this
year. In Lake City, Stephen
Witt was re-elected as
mayor. Melirida Moses and
Jake Hill Jr. became City
Council members. Mark
Hunter becomes the new
sheriff in Columbia County
this week. Ron Williams
was re-elected, and Jody
DuPree and Scarlet Frisina
became new members of
the Columbia County Board
of County Commissioners.
Robert "Skip" Jarvis Jr. is the
new Third Judicial Circuit
State Attorney. State Rep.
Debbie Boyd (D-Newberry)
maintained her post after a
very close election.
Gun sales increase
While the election of
President Barack Obama
signaled change, some
people wanted to maintain
their right to. bear arms.
Gun sales skyrocketed after
the election and are said
to have done so because
a Democratic Congress
and a Democratic presi-
dency were the last time
gun regulations increased
in America.
Police chief and school
superintendent resign
Lake City Police Chief
Steven Burch resigned as
the leader of the Lake City
Police Department. After
several months with no
police chief, City Manager
Scott Reynolds has started
advertising to find one.
Reynolds saidtherewere 86
applicants as of Wednesday.
Columbia School District
Superintendent Grady
"Sam" Markham resigned
his position in mid-
September ending his 48-
year career in the Columbia
School District. He lost the
election, to Mike Millikin,
who took his office early as
a result of the premature
departure by Markham.
Mural in March
The first of what may
be a series of murals in
Lake City adorned a wall
in March. Twenty-two-loca-
tions have been designated
as potential mural sites in
downtown Lake City.
In March, artist Keith
Goodson completed the 86-
by 23-feet mural that deco-
rates the north wall of the
building on the west side
of Marion Avenue facing
Hernando Street.
Either the north or the'
east wall of City Hall is
scheduled for Goodson's
next masterpiece. The next
mural is to be reflective of
the 150th' anniversary of
Lake City, which was for-
merly named Alligator.
E Mosque constructed
The first mosque was
built in Lake City in 2008.
It is west of Interstate-75
on U.S. Highway. Three local
doctors Waseem Khan,
Mohammed Choudhury and
Mohammad Faisal are
behind its construction.
Choudhury said that in the
past, for most prayers, he,
Khan and Faisal would travel
to Gainesville, but because
they are busy professionals,
there, was a need for some-
thing local.
The new structure is too
big for the current small soci-
ety of Muslims, Faisal said,
but as the community grows,
he believes the mosque will
fill as well. And not only for
Muslims. The three said the
mosque was constructed as
a place for people to congre-
gate and learn about their
,own religion and' others
- as well as being a place
where those of other faiths
can learn about Islam.
E LCCC athletics closes
Lake City Community
College ended its sports pro-
grams in the spring of 2008.
Sports for the
Timberwolves goes back
45 years with the start of
a men's basketball program.
That sport ended in the
mid-1990s, along with a just-
started. women's basketball
program. Women's volleyball
and men's cross country also
came and went at LCCC. The
school was clinging to its
storied softball program and
a baseball program that had
gained prominence. A wom-
en's golf program also was
on the books. Now, there are
no competitive team sports
at this community college.

Goodbye
to year that
was, hello to
year that is
2008, the year that was
filled, for many, with
more downs than ups.
Throughout the year,
this was consistently
reflected in the news of the day.
In 2008, we watched a weak
economy become weaker and
we eventually learned what
many of us already knew
that our country had been
in a recession since December
2007.
Artificially high gas prices
didn't help the somber mood.
It's hard to feel positive at $4
bucks a gallon.
The tossing out of the
sports program at Lake City
Community College felt foul to
many, even as we understood it
was for the economic health pf
the institution.
And crime ... harsh times
call for harsh measures, and as
people became more economi-
cally desperate, reports of vio-
lent transgressions increasing
threaded their way into news
stories.
Still, a number of factors
bode well for a more optimistic
2009 in Columbia County.
N ew faces in county law
:enforcement and at the helm of
the school district mean fresh
ideas and approaches to these
public services.
In 2008, our county wit-
nessed the building of its first
.mosque and the ushering in
of the opportunity for religious
tolerance.
And how about that new
mural ... and the new mural
to come? If anything displays
pride throughout .downtown..
Lake City, it is this project
As we move into 2009, we
also step more deeply into his-
tory. This year denotes Lake
City's sesquicentennial. For 150
years the people of this city and
county have weathered histo-
ry's ups and downs, including
more than a few years like 2008
- the year that was.

The Columbia High
Lady Tigers can now
call themselves cham-
pions after taking home
the Christmas tourna-
ment title with a win over
Deltona on Wednesday,
53-45.
Deltona slowed the
pace of the game down
from the start forcing
the Tigers to play against
their strengths.
Trailing 12-5 at the end
of the first, coach Horace
Jefferson switched the
girls into a pressing man-
to-man defense, and that
forced Deltona to eight
turnovers on five second
penalties throughout the
rest of the game.
"I told the girls that
we were getting looks,
but just not making the
shots," Jefferson said. "I
told them to turn up the
intensity, and get in man-
to-man."
From that point for-
ward, the Lady Tigers
started i their comeback,
and Debrea Hill hit a
three-point shot to put
the Lady Tigers up 19-
18 in the second quarter.
The Tigers would lead
throughout from that
point.
"It was a milestone
win for me as a coach,
for the girls as players,
and for Columbia High,"
Jefferson said. "We need-
ed somebody to step up
and win a championship,
and we did it for every-
body."
Moriah Harrington
was named to the all-
tournament team, while
Sharmayne Edwards
took home MVP honors.
Edwards and
Harrington had nine
each along with Katrina
Goodbread.
The Lady Tigers were
led in scoring by DaBrea
Hill with 15 points and
Shaniqua Henry with 11
in the game.
"We played well being
three points away from
five players in double-fig-
ures," Jefferson said.

football's high-and-low year
was one of the top three Lake
City Reporter sports stories
in 2008.

A roller coaster never
reaches the height to
which its starts. That
held true for the ride
that was Columbia High
football in 2008.
Coach Craig Howard
was an unanimous
selection for the job
of Columbia head
football coach and
recommended for the
appointment by Principal
Terry Huddleston in the
second week of
January.
Howard was officially
introduced to fans at
the football banquet by
Heisman Trophy winner
Tim Tebow.
Tebow won a state
title while playing for
Howard at Nease High
and he promised more
of the same if players
would get behind their
new coach.
Howard assembled
his staff, but before
spring practice began
Columbia was hit with a
$2,500 fine and two-year
probation by the Florida
High School Activities
Association for breaking
the rule on
off-season workouts.
The Tigers regrouped
and spring saw the team
out in the community,
scrimmaging at the
Annie Mattox Park field
and revered Memorial
Stadium.
Columbia then put up
65 points in its spring
game win at Citrus
High.
A summer trip to
Hoover High's passing
camp in Alabama
brought the Tigers
home with a 1-7 record
at the competition.
Howard delivered
on his promise of a
televised game.
Camden County High
provided the competition
and hosted the "Border
Wars" event.
The Wildcats turned
out to be the best team
in Georgia and shut out
CHS.
Columbia rebounded
with an overtime win
over Buchholz High
in the Tigers' home
opener, but lost back-
to-back road games to
Fleming Island High and
Terry Parker High by a
total of six points.
The Tigers eased by
Oviedo High at home,
then mauled Middleburg
High for their only
district and road win of
the season.
A home loss followed
to Orange Park High,
which was coached by
Danny Green who was
let go in December,
2007, after 12 years as
head coach at CHS.
Despite falling to 3-4,
Columbia still had the
playoffs in sight.
Nease dented that
hope by beating the
visiting Tigers.
There remained a
homecoming chance to
make the postseason
field, but Columbia lost
to Ridgeview High'.
Columbia won back
the Old Oaken Bucket
trophy from Suwannee
High in the final game of
the year to finish 4-6.
It was the first losing
season at Columbia
since 1986 and the
second time the school
did not make the
playoffs in the last 16
years.
